Today we will pick up in the Book of Acts with Chapter 19:6-12, 16-25, and 27-38.

Today we will read about Paul beginning his journey to Jerusalem. Paul stopped to give some final words to the leaders in Ephesus. His message, in part, was to make sure they remembered to take care of others, especially those who were not strong. Paul reminded the Ephesians that Jesus himself also taught that it was better to give than to receive.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about Jesus teaching us that even He did not come to be served, but to serve, just as Paul had served the Ephesians when he was with them.  We will talk about how Jesus sent the disciples out not only to tell people about the Good News but to heal people, drive out demons, raise the dead, and heal skin sicknesses because they had been freely given the ability to do these things and they needed to freely use that gift for the benefit of others. We will tie this together with what we have learned recently about everyone having received spiritual gifts. The gifts we have been given are meant to be used for the benefit of others, not something we just keep to ourselves. We have been given so many gifts from God. We need to freely share these gifts with others, especially those who NEED what we have been gifted with! God is so generous with us. We also need to be generous with others and share with them what God has given us.

As we close our reading session today I pray "that God will help you work together to follow Jesus so that it will seem like you have one heart and together you can show God's greatness. Amen!"

Introduction and Welcome

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome back everybody. Today is November 16th. My name is Robin. I'm with In The Family Way Coaching. And it is my pleasure this year to bring you our daily Bible reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:19
Speaker
I hope you are having a fantastic day, whatever day you get around to watching or listening to today's daily reading.

Commitment to Daily Reading

00:00:26
Speaker
And I hope you're hungry because we're going to have a great feast today.
00:00:32
Speaker
If you are crossing off your days, then go ahead and get your bookmark out, ah your bookmark, your bookmarking commitment calendar. There we go. That's what I meant to say. And get your crayon, your pencil, your pen, your stickers, whatever you are using to cross off those days.
00:00:51
Speaker
Because we are about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:56
Speaker
I cannot believe we are almost completely done with the entire Bible in the entire year.

Journey Through the Bible

00:01:03
Speaker
We have a little over a month and a half left of this entire event.
00:01:10
Speaker
We have gone all the way from Genesis and now we are back in Acts. roman are
00:01:17
Speaker
And it is, it has just been an amazing journey this year. I just, I cannot believe we're almost done. I feel like I'm getting tired. I've been at this late at night ah for the past couple of weeks. I have not been getting it done in the early part of the day.
00:01:32
Speaker
So I've been getting these out later and I just feel like, oh, maybe I'm getting tired and I need to keep pushing on for this race and and not to give up running.
00:01:44
Speaker
Don't worry, I'm not giving up. I haven't haven't given it up yet. I haven't missed any days yet. I technically didn't get them posted, but I have made sure to do them every day.
00:01:57
Speaker
So thank you for following along and for your faithfulness in keeping along with our daily reading. Whatever time you started this with me, I'm just so glad and very happy to know that you are being faithful and are watching or listening throughout this event for as long as you have been here.

Chronological Reading of Acts

00:02:15
Speaker
And I do want to encourage you that when January 1st rolls around again, you are welcome and free and encouraged to start back up again with Genesis 1-1.
00:02:26
Speaker
Because the event will be sitting right there, waiting for you to watch or listen. Well, today we are picking up in Acts chapter 6.
00:02:37
Speaker
We had previously read the first five verses of chapter 20, because remember, our Bible is chronological. And so those five verses occurred before we began the book of Romans.
00:02:51
Speaker
But now Paul has is leaving Greece, and he is... going to be getting to Rome in order to um see that community.
00:03:04
Speaker
But he's not there yet. Right now, we know from the letter that he wrote to the Romans that he is going to be picking up a gift, a financial gift, and he's going to be taking it to Jerusalem.
00:03:19
Speaker
And so we're going to be reading about his trip today.

Paul's Journey and Miracles

00:03:23
Speaker
and what was happening as he was leaving for his trip. This is an amazing accounting that we were are going to read about today.
00:03:35
Speaker
Now Paul and his friends traveled to the city of Troas, and they stayed there for seven days. And this was during the days of matzah. So that means that during this period of time, now they have just had Passover.
00:03:51
Speaker
And so they have celebrated Passover and then the seven days of matzah, which is the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And then on Sunday, which was the first day of the week, they met together for the Lord's Supper.
00:04:05
Speaker
Now, they were not meeting together because it was on Sunday. They were meeting together because the seven days of matzah had passed and Paul was getting ready to travel. I just wanted to make that clear. In our big Bible, it just tells us that this happened on the first day of the week.
00:04:23
Speaker
And on our version, it simplifies that by telling us that it happened to occur on a Sunday. Now Paul taught the people there when they were in Troas, and he planned to leave town the next day.
00:04:37
Speaker
So he kept talking until after midnight. They were in a room upstairs, and they were on the third floor. There were lots of lamps in the room, and one young man sat in a window.
00:04:53
Speaker
His name was Eutychus. Now Paul talked and talked and talked. And Eutychus eventually got tired and he fell asleep.
00:05:06
Speaker
And soon he was very sound asleep. He was so asleep that all of a sudden he fell out the window. And he fell all the way to the ground from that third story.
00:05:20
Speaker
And when the people ran down and they picked up Eutychus, they found that he was dead. But Paul hurried downstairs too, and he hugged the young man.
00:05:33
Speaker
He said, don't worry, he is alive. And then Paul went back upstairs.
00:05:43
Speaker
There, once he was back upstairs, he ate, and he just started teaching again. And he talked well until after the sun came up, and then he left.
00:05:57
Speaker
And then the people went home, and so did that young man Eutychus. He was alive, and all of the people were very glad.
00:06:08
Speaker
Now Paul

Farewell to Ephesian Leaders

00:06:09
Speaker
and his friends set sail, sailed to a place near Ephesus. Now Paul was in a hurry to get to Jerusalem, because he was trying, if possible, to arrive by the day of Shavuot.
00:06:24
Speaker
And we know that Shavuot is the counting up of 50 days. So that means that they had about 42 days or so in ah in in order to travel before they reached Jerusalem.
00:06:40
Speaker
And so he did not go into Ephesus while he was traveling. He just sent for the church leaders there while he was in Miletus. So the church leaders came out of this city to see Paul.
00:06:55
Speaker
Paul said to the leaders, you know how I lived when I was with you. I served the Lord and I was not proud. I was ah the Jewish people made plans against me, but I kept teaching.
00:07:13
Speaker
And I went from house to house, said Paul. I taught you things that would help you. I told both Jews and the Greeks to turn to God.
00:07:25
Speaker
And I told them to be sorry for the wrong that they had done. I told them to believe in Jesus. And now God's Spirit wants me to go to Jerusalem, said Paul.
00:07:37
Speaker
And I don't know what will happen there. But I do know this. Wherever I go, God's Holy Spirit tells me to watch out because hard times are coming.
00:07:49
Speaker
even time in jail. But my life does not mean anything to me, said Paul. I only want to finish the job that Jesus gave me to do, and that is the job of telling the good news about God's kind love.
00:08:07
Speaker
And I know that you won't see me again, said Paul. So I wanted to tell you this. I have told you all that God wants. So take care of yourselves and take care of God's people.
00:08:23
Speaker
Be shepherds of God's church. He bought the church with his very own blood. And after I leave, there are going to be other teachers who will come, said Paul.
00:08:38
Speaker
But they are going to be like wolves in a group of sheep. And even men who meet with you now are going to bend the truth because they will try to get people to follow them.
00:08:52
Speaker
So be careful. Now I give you to God in his kind love. God's words can build you up, said Paul. Now, I have not wanted anybody's silver or gold.
00:09:07
Speaker
I have not wanted anybody's clothes. I worked hard to get everything my friends and needed. And I have shown you with what our Big Bible calls an object lesson, which means to put a concrete example to a moral or a lesson.
00:09:31
Speaker
I have shown you how to work hard to help people who are not strong. And remember Jesus' words. It is better to give than to get or receive.
00:09:47
Speaker
Now, Paul is referring to teaching that is not specifically written down in our New Covenant writings. However, we're going to talk about that in just a little bit.
00:10:00
Speaker
Then Paul and the church leaders all bowed down and they prayed. And the people cried and they hugged Paul. And they were very sad because he had told them that he would never see them again. And then they went with Paul to his ship.
00:10:20
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:10:27
Speaker
I love how Paul rushed down and saved that young man, Eutychus, who had fallen asleep and fallen out the window. Before Paul is done with his work, he is performing miracles.
00:10:41
Speaker
He is on his final mission as he eventually is on his way to Rome. And Rome is where he will eventually be put under house arrest.
00:10:53
Speaker
And that is where Acts will end. Also, I mentioned yesterday that I always forget. i was I said I wasn't sure, but I thought we had said that Matthew had written the book of Acts, but it was not Matthew. It was Luke.
00:11:07
Speaker
I always get that one wrong. So I wanted to correct myself that it was Luke who wrote down that book of Acts that we are reading right now.

Teachings on Service and Generosity

00:11:16
Speaker
So let's talk about our daily application.
00:11:19
Speaker
Let's talk about Paul's examples. Paul is going to Jerusalem and we see that he has not gone to Ephesus but has stopped in Miletus and is close enough so that he's not going into the city at Ephesus but he has called for the leaders and he wants to leave them with a final bit of information before he goes. He wants to encourage them.
00:11:46
Speaker
This is not new information. This is information that he just wants to reiterate to them. before he is finally gone, because he has been told through people and by the Holy Spirit that his his service time is coming close to an end.
00:12:05
Speaker
And Paul has told us today that he doesn't know what's going to await him in Jerusalem, but he does know that the Spirit has been telling him that there is going to be trouble, even time in jail So we will start reading about that tomorrow, I believe, because that picks up in chapter 21 of Acts.
00:12:23
Speaker
But we don't want to get ahead of ourselves. I just wanted us to have understanding that this is what's going on. So as Paul is talking to the Ephesians, he is giving them a warning to be careful about the people who are going to step in behind him and try to be leaders and that they are going to bend the truth.
00:12:48
Speaker
Our big Bible uses a word that says pervert the truth. And so they are going to try to get people to follow them. It is prideful. They are like wolves in a sheep pen, and they want nothing but to have the people follow them so that they can be glorified.
00:13:08
Speaker
And Paul is warning them very sternly about that, saying that he has warned them for three years that this was going to be the case.
00:13:19
Speaker
Let's see. And Paul tells us,
00:13:25
Speaker
You yourselves know how I behaved among you all the time from the first day that I set foot in Asia. This starts at verse 18. Serving the Lord with all humility and tears and trials, which fell upon me through the plots of the Jewish leaders.
00:13:43
Speaker
I did not shrink back from proclaiming to you anything that was profitable, teaching you publicly as well as from house to house, testifying to both Jewish and Greek people, repentance to God and trust in our Lord Jesus.
00:14:04
Speaker
Let's see. We're going to skip down. He says in verse 26,
00:14:15
Speaker
ah not Not verse 26. I had this highlighted here.
00:14:21
Speaker
In verse 28. eight Take care of yourselves and all of the flock which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to shepherd the community of God which he obtained with the blood of his own.
00:14:36
Speaker
I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. And therefore, be alert. I'm skipping verse 30.
00:14:47
Speaker
Even from among yourselves, there will arise men speaking perversions to draw the disciples away after themselves. We have to be careful, even in today's time, that there will be people who try to draw us away from the truth because they are looking to glorify themselves.
00:15:07
Speaker
So that's a very valid lesson. I just wanted to ah mention that, but that's not our daily application. Paul goes on to say, to therefore be alert, remembering that night and day for three years, I did not stop warning you with tears.
00:15:26
Speaker
In verse 33, he says, I coveted no one's silver or gold or clothing. You yourselves know that these hands of mine have provided for my own needs as well as for those with me.
00:15:41
Speaker
And in all things, I have shown you an object lesson. Remember, we said an object lesson is a concrete example. It's an illustration of a moral or of a principle.
00:15:54
Speaker
So in all things, Paul has shown them how to behave. But especially that by hard work, one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said that it is more blessed to give than to re receive.
00:16:14
Speaker
So this is the verse that we... said that it's not exactly technically found in the in the New Covenant. It's not a quote that can be specifically found.
00:16:25
Speaker
But what we do know is that not every single thing that Jesus did and said were recorded. And we know that that is the case because we are told that not all of the things that Jesus did were written down. Or he says there wouldn't be enough books to fill. There would be more books than would fill the world with all of the things that Jesus did.
00:16:48
Speaker
But the things that were written down were written down so that we would believe and by believing have life. So this was an oral passage. Tradition we might call not a tradition, but an oral um teaching rather not a tradition, but a teaching that Jesus had had spoken.
00:17:08
Speaker
But even without that specific oral teaching, we know that Jesus taught this with his own object lessons. He illustrated, he worked out, he always showed us how to how to behave.
00:17:26
Speaker
And so Jesus tells us that he came not to be served, but to serve. So if Jesus himself, which we have spoken of in the past, came to serve and not to be served, Paul is telling us that in that same way, we also are to serve one another, as we have spoken about before, but to help others who are weaker than us, who have less than us, whether he is talking about by faith, that they have weaker faith, which we've been talking about for the last couple of days,
00:18:02
Speaker
but just in general to serve those who are weaker.

Inspiration from Spiritual Gifts

00:18:08
Speaker
And this is really showing the continuity of Paul's lesson, that he is not changing his directions from direction um community to another. He doesn't say one thing to one community and one thing to another.
00:18:25
Speaker
You can see that this is what he was talking about to the Romans when he was talking about that in his letter, which we read the other day. And so he is putting out the same message.
00:18:38
Speaker
And so he is teaching us that it is better that we give of ourselves, that we serve, rather than to expect others to serve us or to give to us.
00:18:50
Speaker
Now, in addition to Jesus telling us that he himself did not come to two be served, but rather to serve, we also have when he was sending the disciples out to ah to train, to go out and to heal people.
00:19:09
Speaker
In Matthew 10, verse 8, verse eight
00:19:15
Speaker
it's Well, we're going to start in verse 5, actually. When Jesus sent out the twelve, he ordered them, Do not go to the Gentiles and do not go into any Samaritan town, but go instead to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
00:19:28
Speaker
And as you go, proclaim, The kingdom of heaven has come near. Heal the sick. Raise the dead. Cleanse those with skin sicknesses, which would be leprosy.
00:19:43
Speaker
Drive out demons. Freely you received. Freely give. That is one of my favorite, favorite teachings from Jesus.
00:19:56
Speaker
Now, that was the very first time that he that Jesus had sent the disciples out. And so they were no longer, of course, now to go to only the Jewish people first. But that was just so that we could understand the time frame in which that that occurred. This was not the second time where he had sent them out, but this was the very first time So as Jesus was sending out his disciples to go practice and then to come back to him, he was teaching them.
00:20:24
Speaker
They have been given the ability, the gifts to do these things, to heal the sick, to drive out demons, to cure skin sicknesses.
00:20:35
Speaker
And first they were to proclaim the good news. And then they were also to help people. They were to help those who who needed help.
00:20:47
Speaker
In that same way, God has been very generous with us. He has now given each of us spiritual gifts, which we have learned about in the past week or so.
00:20:59
Speaker
And we have spiritual gifts that are beneficial. They are all different. Not everybody has been gifted to do all of the same things. But we whatever gifts we have...
00:21:12
Speaker
We have been given those gifts by God through the Holy Spirit freely. And in the same way that we have been given freely, so shall we give.
00:21:24
Speaker
So shall we share those gifts. They are not to be hoarded, kept to ourselves. They are to be shared. God gives us spiritual gifts so that we may help people.
00:21:38
Speaker
He wants us to go out into the world and help those who are in need of help. We have a lot of superhero stories that we read and watch on TV.
00:21:52
Speaker
Every children's program nowadays seems to be some form of superhero. But you know what? Jesus is the original superhero. He saved us.
00:22:05
Speaker
And while we cannot save other people, we can help other people with God working through us. It's not by our own power. It is by the Holy Spirit.
00:22:17
Speaker
Jesus is still saving people today. So if we're looking for a hero to worship, let's worship the hero we are meant to worship.
00:22:28
Speaker
The one who not only saved us, but gives us the ability to help others. to pro To first proclaim the good news that he is Lord of all.
00:22:41
Speaker
And then also to help other people. That's our daily application today. And Paul was very much an example of all of these principles.
00:22:53
Speaker
He brought back to life. And this is something that Jesus mentioned as well, that we are to bring people back to life. That is what Paul did. We saw that just today.
00:23:06
Speaker
He heals people. He healed people throughout. He worked hard. He did not take. He did not go to two so to be served anywhere he he traveled.
00:23:19
Speaker
But he was a servant of Jesus. We are also meant to serve others as we are serving Jesus and to freely give of the gifts that we have been given.
00:23:34
Speaker
What a beautiful lesson today, don't you think? I know I was encouraged. I absolutely enjoyed today's reading. There was so much good information and there were so many different things I wanted to talk about.
00:23:47
Speaker
And the Holy Spirit said, no, that's it. It's freely have we been given. Freely shall we give.
00:23:57
Speaker
Well, I hope that you are feeling generous after watching or listening. And I hope that you go out whatever day you have listened or watched this daily reading from the Day by Day Kids Bible.
00:24:10
Speaker
And I pray that God gives you plenty of opportunities to be generous today and every day with the gifts that he has given you.

Purpose of Bible Readings

00:24:20
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me for today's daily reading.
00:24:23
Speaker
I am looking forward to picking up with you again tomorrow as we go into Acts chapter 21 tomorrow. And let's see, just 21.
00:24:34
Speaker
There's a lot going on. So now we're just doing one chapter at a time for a little bit. And I would like to encourage you before you go to click that light button, if you don't mind.
00:24:46
Speaker
I see we've already grown a couple more subscribers to our YouTube in the past couple of days. So, wow, thank you so much for joining me. I know one of them is you, Kitty, but I don't know who the next one is.
00:24:58
Speaker
I was expecting to see a 51 when I looked yesterday, but there were 52. So congratulations for whoever that 52 is. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for helping us spread the word about reading God's word.
00:25:11
Speaker
That's the goal here. This has nothing to do with likes for me. This is not so I can ah be popular. I'm not trying to draw people to myself. My goal is that this is God's event that he put on my heart.
00:25:25
Speaker
And I am just wanting to be helpful and useful in being his witness as we talk about how God is using this in my daily life and how he can use it in your daily life as well.
00:25:38
Speaker
I love how every day God's word is useful for teaching us and correcting us and preparing us for the good works that he has for us to do.
00:25:49
Speaker
Those

Closing and Gratitude

00:25:50
Speaker
good works where we are able to use the gifts that he has given us to help those who need help.
00:25:57
Speaker
Ah, it's so hard for me to transition into a goodbye sometimes. Thank you for joining me. And I will see everybody again tomorrow. Have a very blessed day.
