Today's we will continue reading Paul's first letter to the Corinthians with Chapter 3:1-7, 16-20, Chapter 4:6-14, 16-20, Chapter 5:1-3, 9-13, and Chapter 6: 1-7, 9-13, 15, 18-20

Today we will read about a list of many behaviors that Paul was concerned about occurring within the Corinthian community. Paul addressed the inappropriateness of bragging about spiritual gifts and explained why believers need to take disputes to other believers for resolution rather than to the courthouse where their dispute will be judged by a non believer. Paul explained that when we do this, nobody wins.

Paul spent a lot of time discussing sinning with the body and how this should be especially avoided because our bodies are the temple for God's Spirit; God's Spirit lives in each of us! God paid for our bodies with Jesus' blood, so our bodies do not belong to just us anymore! Therefore, we need to show God how great we think He is by the way we act with our bodies.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about Paul's request to imitate him and how important it is for us to mind our behavior, imitating Jesus and other mature believers, so that we can provide good examples for people and do our best not to lead other people astray by providing examples of bad behavior for others to follow.

i hope that you are doing well and that you are having a fabulous day today.

Paul's Message to Corinthians

00:00:41
Speaker
I really enjoyed today's reading and today we are going to be picking up with essentially a laundry list of things that Paul has that the Corinthians are doing.
00:00:52
Speaker
They are doing a lot of things that they should not be doing. And so Paul is going to spend some time today talking about the different sins that the people are committing and explaining to them that they've already been washed from these sins.
00:01:08
Speaker
So they need to not be continuing in this behavior. And there is a great deal of emphasis that is being placed on sexual immorality or what our version says, sinning with sex.
00:01:23
Speaker
So there were a lot of ah concerns that Paul had in this regard. And so Paul is going to be explaining a little bit more about what he talked about yesterday when he told us that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
00:01:40
Speaker
So it's not just simply that we house the Holy Spirit. It's that that comes with responsibility. It comes with responsibility to keep our bodies clean because our bodies are not just for us.
00:01:55
Speaker
They also belong to God. And God did not get those bodies cheaply. God paid for these bodies that we have. He paid for them with Jesus's very blood.
00:02:09
Speaker
So we have been bought and paid for. We belong to him and he has put our spirit. Sorry, excuse me. He has put his spirit within us.
00:02:20
Speaker
And so when we don't treat our bodies properly, such as ah behaving inappropriately with sex toward other people who are not our marriage partner, then we are not simply defiling our body.
00:02:36
Speaker
We are defiling the temple of the Holy Spirit. And so Paul is going to be talking with us about that today.

Gifts and Humility

00:02:45
Speaker
He's also going to remind us not to be ah bragging about our miscellaneous gifts that we may have.
00:02:54
Speaker
And to remember not to ah think that we are so wise. We talked yesterday about and that the wisdom of man is full foolishness to God.
00:03:07
Speaker
And today Paul is going to elaborate more on that because apparently the people there incur in Corinth, corinth were very proud of their different gifts.
00:03:18
Speaker
And so God is, ah Paul is going to explain to us today that everything we have comes from God. So we don't need to be bragging about it because we had nothing without that.
00:03:31
Speaker
So let's head into our reading and let's pick up. We are going to be reading out of the first letter to the Corinthians and it will cover chapters four, five, and six today.
00:03:50
Speaker
So Paul picks up and he says to us, I told you about Apollos and me for your good. Because you can learn from us. You can learn what this means.
00:04:02
Speaker
Do only what God says to do in his word. And then you won't brag about one person being greater than another. Who makes you different from other people?
00:04:16
Speaker
God does. And what do you have that you did not get from him? Nothing. If God gave it to you, then why brag about it?
00:04:30
Speaker
You have everything you want already. You are already rich, and you live like kings without us. I wish you really were kings, because then we could be kings with you.
00:04:44
Speaker
But the other apostles and i seem to be at the end of the parade. God shows us to everyone. We're something for everyone in the world to look at.
00:04:58
Speaker
And we're here even for the angels to look at.

Addressing Serious Sins

00:05:02
Speaker
We are fools for Jesus. But you think you are so wise in Jesus.
00:05:09
Speaker
We are not strong. but you think you are. people think that you are important, but they don't think that we are important.
00:05:22
Speaker
Even now, we go hungry. We get thirsty. We dress in rags. People are mean to us.
00:05:33
Speaker
We have no homes. We work hard. But... We pray for people who speak badly to us or of us, and some people are mean to us.
00:05:47
Speaker
We take it. We answer kindly when people say bad things about us, and we are like the dirt of the earth. We're like the trash of the world.
00:06:00
Speaker
And I'm not writing this to make you feel bad. I'm just telling you where the danger is. And I feel like you are my dear children. So I beg you, do what I do.
00:06:15
Speaker
This is why I am sending Timothy to you. I love him like a son. he will help you remember my way of living in Jesus. Because I what what i say
00:06:30
Speaker
Some of you brag and it's as if I were not coming to see you. But I will come to see you. I will come very soon if God lets me. And then I will find out what these proud braggers are saying.
00:06:45
Speaker
And I will see how strong they are. Because God's kingdom isn't talk, it's power.
00:06:55
Speaker
And now I hear that some people in your group sin with sex. Specifically, there is a man who is sleeping with his father's wife the only way that a husband should.
00:07:07
Speaker
People who don't believe in God don't even do that. And you're proud of yourselves for it? Shouldn't you be sad instead? Shouldn't you send this man away from your group?
00:07:20
Speaker
I may not be with you, but I have already judged the man who did this, and it's just as if I were there with you. I wrote a letter to you and it said not to be with people who sin with sex.
00:07:35
Speaker
I did not mean people of this world. They sin with sex and they want more and more things and they lie to get money. They worship things, not God. And if you weren't around them, then you would have to leave this world.
00:07:53
Speaker
Now, someone might say that he follows Jesus. But if he sins with sex, and he wants more and more things, and he worships things, not God, and he says bad things about other people, he gets drunk, he lies to get money, do not be friends with him.
00:08:14
Speaker
Don't even eat with him.
00:08:17
Speaker
Now, it's not my job to judge people who don't follow Jesus. God will judge people who don't follow him. But you are supposed to judge people who do follow Jesus.

Resolving Disputes within the Church

00:08:30
Speaker
God's word says to send the sinful person away from you.
00:08:39
Speaker
Let's say some of you fuss with each other. Do you dare talk about it with someone who does not follow Jesus? Do you dare to have that person say who is right?
00:08:53
Speaker
you should ask Jesus' followers for help. Jesus' followers will judge the world, so can't you judge smaller things? Don't you know that we will judge angels?
00:09:06
Speaker
Then I am sure we can judge things of this life. Take your problems to God's people and let them say who is right and who is wrong.
00:09:18
Speaker
You can even take problems to people who don't seem important. But can it be that nobody is wise enough? Can no one say what is right and what is wrong?
00:09:31
Speaker
Instead, one of Jesus' followers gets mad at another one and then they go to a judge who does not follow Jesus. When Jesus' followers take each other to a judge, nobody wins.
00:09:46
Speaker
Why not let the other person do wrong to you? Why not let him lie to you? Sinful people won't get into God's kingdom.
00:09:57
Speaker
Don't be fooled. People who sin with sex won't get into God's kingdom. People who worship idols won't get in. People who rob others won't get in.
00:10:09
Speaker
People who want more and more things won't get in. Drunks won't get in. People who say bad things about others won't get in. People who lie to get money.
00:10:22
Speaker
won't get in. Now some of you used to do those things, but your hearts were washed. Your hearts were made clean from sin, and it was as if you had never sinned.
00:10:36
Speaker
And it happened in Jesus' name. It came by God's Spirit.
00:10:45
Speaker
I might say, i'm allowed to do everything. But not everything is good for me.
00:10:55
Speaker
And I will not let anything control me.
00:11:00
Speaker
Our bodies were not made for using sex the wrong way. Our bodies were made for the Lord. The Lord cares about our bodies.
00:11:11
Speaker
They belong to Jesus. So should we use our bodies to sin with sex? Never. Run away from sinning with sex.
00:11:23
Speaker
Other kinds of sins happen outside of your body. But sinning with sex is sinning against your own body. And your body is the Holy Spirit's worship house.
00:11:35
Speaker
The Holy Spirit is in you. And God gave us, God gave him to you. You do not belong just to yourself.
00:11:47
Speaker
God bought you. He paid for you by giving his son, Jesus. And that was a big price to pay. So let God know how great you think he is and show it by the way you act with your body.
00:12:07
Speaker
And that it is the end of our reading today.
00:12:13
Speaker
There was quite a lot in today's reading, wasn't there? The overarching theme is that we need to be mindful of how we are treating each other and in staying in a sinful mindset.
00:12:28
Speaker
Everything is permissible for us, Paul says, but not everything is good for us. So we have to have good judgment as to what it is that is good for us and what is not.
00:12:41
Speaker
Paul it even explains that just taking people to court... is not good for anybody because the judge is not a follower of Jesus.
00:12:52
Speaker
Now it is possible nowadays that the judge may be a follower of Jesus, but there are strict laws about how the judges have to judge, and they're not allowed to take into consideration God's to laws or a person's religious standing, what they believe.
00:13:13
Speaker
So what Paul is explaining here is that when at all possible, we need to take our arguments, our disputes to a church elder or to another person who believes in Jesus and ask them to help us decide.
00:13:30
Speaker
He says, surely there must be somebody wise enough among you to be able to make decisions as to what is right and what is wrong. The problem can be is that if the other person does not want to ah go to this type of a hearing.
00:13:47
Speaker
We might call that an arbitration. An arbitration is where two people agree to go sit in front of somebody about a disagreement who is not a judge, and they will have somebody who is not a party to the disagreement listen to both sides of the disagreement and help them decide who it is that is right and who is not right.
00:14:11
Speaker
So that is what an arbitration is. And we have that even not for non-believers. It's very common. So what Paul is explaining is that we need to use this type of arbitration among believers whenever possible.
00:14:28
Speaker
And not to lie and cheat each other. but god ah but Paul reminds us that if somebody is lying or cheating to us, cheating us or lying to us about something,
00:14:42
Speaker
He says they're not going to be getting their way into heaven that way. That's not the way into God's kingdom. They are not showing that they are

Behavior Reflecting Faith

00:14:52
Speaker
being transformed. They are not living according to the Spirit.
00:14:55
Speaker
And we have a responsibility to live according to the Spirit. We cannot control other people. And so Paul is explaining to us that he says, can it be that nobody is wise enough?
00:15:11
Speaker
He says, sinful people, he says, why not let the other person do wrong to you? When Jesus's followers take each other to a judge, nobody wins.
00:15:24
Speaker
Let him, why not let the other person do wrong to you? Why not let him lie to you?
00:15:32
Speaker
So the reason why is because he says sinful people are not going to be getting into God's kingdom. And don't be fooled, because people who do these things are not going to be showing that they are followers of Jesus.
00:15:47
Speaker
And we know that Jesus said this too. He said, there will be many of you who come and when you see me and you say, look Lord, Lord, we ate with you and drank with you.
00:15:58
Speaker
And he will say, get away from me, you evildoers. I didn't know you. Who are you? So it's one thing to so to, we can claim anything we want. And Paul tells us here that, that people will say that they are following Jesus, but that doesn't mean that they really are.
00:16:19
Speaker
And God and ah Paul warns us that if there is somebody that is um doing a lot of sinful things that we are not supposed to associate with them, because remember, we have to be mindful of the company that we keep.
00:16:35
Speaker
Because bad habits can wear off on us just as easily as our bad habits can wear off on other people. So not only are we supposed to be mindful of how we are behaving, and Paul is ah begging, he says, for them to behave like he behaves, because he does what he says, and he says what he does.
00:16:59
Speaker
And he wants us to do that as well. Because people who can claim to say that they are followers of Jesus, but if they're not behaving like it, then they're going to be a bad example.
00:17:10
Speaker
And we can have that same effect. That's why we have to be careful in how we behave so that we do not lead others astray. We do not want to accidentally, or a big word would be inadvertently, lead somebody astray.
00:17:28
Speaker
We are to behave like Jesus. Paul explained or previously that we are to imitate mature believers. And so that is what we are meant to be doing and ah to be staying away from the sinful behaviors that are ah ah being used, that are being being acted out in the Corinthian church.
00:17:52
Speaker
And we can still be guilty of those sins today. So we want to be mindful of Paul's and warnings and his teachings as to how we need to be teaching ah treating each other.
00:18:06
Speaker
If we are finding that the company that we are keeping is providing nothing but bad examples, then we need to not be associating with those people.
00:18:17
Speaker
And we need to be mindful of our own behavior as well. So I hope that ah that you have understanding of our word today but for our daily application.
00:18:28
Speaker
It had a lot to today, didn't it? i it was ah I had to really pray about the ah the application because there were so many things. And rather than try to call each item out as an application, but we needed to look at the overall application.
00:18:45
Speaker
big story, which is what we're reading this year is the big story, not in all of the little details, ah because we could certainly make a sermon out of every single thing that he spoke about, couldn't we?
00:18:57
Speaker
But our overall theme is to be mindful of the company that we so that we are keeping and to treat each other properly and to ah keep the family problems within the family.
00:19:12
Speaker
That's a good way to put it. If we are having difficulty with someone in our spiritual family, then we need to be taking those spiritual problems with our spiritual brother or sister to other brothers and sisters in the body so that we are are being, so that we are judged fairly and with somebody who actually has knowledge and will be able to be in a position to to give us that advice.

Commitment to Daily Readings

00:19:42
Speaker
from the spirit So I hope you have, I hope you are feeling very enlightened today with our reading, that you are feeling very motivated and that God has lit your light with understanding that if we are ah experiencing these types of difficulties that we know how to, how we need to correct them.
