Today's we will  begin reading Paul's first letter to the Corinthians with Chapter 1:2, 5-7, 10-28, Chapter 2:1-2, 4-5, 7, 9-16, and Chapter 3:1-7, 16-20.

Today we will read about the Corinthians having difficulty getting along with one another because they were causing division among themselves by claiming they were followers of different teachers. Paul's letter explains that they (and we!) need to stay focused on unity with one another  because we all share the same Holy Spirit, are all followers of Jesus, have the mind of Jesus, and are the temple for God's Spirit because God lives in each of us!

In our discussion for daily application we will be encouraged to remember that we, like the Corinthians, need to remember not to get hung up on divisive names like being Catholic, Protestant, Presbyterian, Baptist, Lutheran, non denominational, etc. We need to remember that we all have the same foundation- Jesus! It is God who is important, not who we claim to follow, because we are all just servants for God!

We will also talk about how we have the mind of Jesus, which means our goals should be the same as Jesus' goals: make God the most important one in our lives, obey God, do the work God gave us to do to tell people about Jesus, and help people know how to follow Jesus.

Introduction and Bible Reading

00:00:03
Speaker
And here we are again. Today is October 29th. My name is Robin. I'm with In the Family Way Coaching. And it is my pleasure today to bring you today's Bible reading passage out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:19
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me again today.

Focus on Paul's Letters to the Corinthians

00:00:22
Speaker
We have a lot to go through with the letters that Paul wrote to the Corinthians today. We are going to be covering, i think it's three chapters, 1 Corinthians 1 through 3.
00:00:35
Speaker
And boy, is there a lot of meat, as we would say. So if you are following along on that bookmarking commitment calendar to check off your days for keeping track, it's time to get that out because we are going to read a lot of the Bible today.

Encouragement to Read the Big Bible for Context

00:00:54
Speaker
I want to encourage you, first of all, to head up your Big Bible after hearing today's reading. There is so much in there. I love the way Karen Henley puts it so that those have ah so that we can understand things easier.
00:01:10
Speaker
However, I really love reading the Big Bible after reading or hearing the Karen Henley Bible. simplified version because there is so much additional detail that Paul gives us in the letters that I just really want to encourage you. Some of it I may incorporate into our reading because I just can't let it go.
00:01:33
Speaker
It has to be part of our reading and I want to be sure that you hear it. But there is so much. We are going to be reading about Christ. the concerns that Paul has for those believers who are living in Corinth.

Unity in Spirit and Leaders

00:01:49
Speaker
Paul is writing this letter to the Corinthians while he is living or while he is staying in Ephesus, which is where he wrote the letter to the Ephesians. So while he is there, he is hearing reports about what we call disunity in the body over there.
00:02:08
Speaker
He is going to be telling us that people are claiming to follow different leaders. And you know what? We are still doing that today.
00:02:19
Speaker
We have a different name for it, whereas in Paul's letter to the Corinthians, some are claiming to follow Paul, some are following Apollos, some just claim to be following the Messiah.
00:02:32
Speaker
And what we are going to be learning today is that we are all unified in the same spirit. And we've talked a lot about that this year because God put that on my heart.
00:02:45
Speaker
very strongly to encourage and to show unity in his spirit. And Paul is going to be explaining to us that we are all built on that same foundation because God's spirit lives within us, which we may say, yeah, I know.
00:03:02
Speaker
But this is where Paul explains to make sure that we understand that we actually have the mind of Jesus. And we're going to be talking about what that means.
00:03:14
Speaker
after we get done because I don't want to give everything at the very beginning. I can have a tendency to get carried away. I get so excited. Man, I was just so excited when I was reading today's reading and that's because the spirit reveals to us truth.
00:03:30
Speaker
And that's what Paul is going to be talking about today as well. We are not of the world. We need to discern and which means to understand with our spirit.
00:03:42
Speaker
And if we are divided ah into different what we call factions or ah different sects, S-E-C-T-S, then we are encouraging disunity.
00:03:57
Speaker
And in today's society, I mentioned that we still have that trouble today. Some will claim, well, I'm Catholic. Well, I'm Lutheran. Well, I'm Protestant. I'm Presbyterian.
00:04:08
Speaker
I am non-denominational. I'm Baptist. I'm Southern Baptist. I am Messianic Jewish. I am you know, and fill in the blanks.
00:04:21
Speaker
And the thing is, is that we are claiming to follow a particular leader by doing that. And we need to remember that it is not the people that we are following.
00:04:35
Speaker
We are following God. And Paul is going to be speaking to us about that unity today. So without any further ado, let's head into our reading.

The Foolishness of Worldly Wisdom

00:04:52
Speaker
From Asia, Paul wrote this letter, meaning he was in Ephesus, which was in Asia at that time. That's the area that's considered to be in.
00:05:04
Speaker
To Jesus's followers in Corinth. Any way you look at it, God has made you rich. You are rich in everything you say.
00:05:16
Speaker
You are rich in everything you know. you have every gift God wanted to give you. Here is what I beg you to do in Jesus' name.
00:05:30
Speaker
Try to get along with each other. Then you are not working against each other and you can agree together. Somebody from Chloe's family told me what you are doing.
00:05:44
Speaker
One of you says, ah follow Paul. Another person says, follow Apollos. Somebody else says, i follow Peter. And someone else says, follow Jesus.
00:05:59
Speaker
Is Jesus broken into different parts? Was Paul killed on a cross for you? Were you dipped into water in Paul's name? I am glad that I baptized only a two of you, and that way people cannot say that they were baptized into my name.
00:06:17
Speaker
Oh, yes, I also baptized the family of Stephanas, and I don't remember if I baptized anybody else. But Jesus did not send me to dip you into water.
00:06:28
Speaker
He sent me to teach you his good news. Now, some people don't follow God, and what do they think?
00:06:39
Speaker
They think the news about the cross is just foolish. But we are being saved. So to us, the cross is power.
00:06:53
Speaker
Isaiah said it like this. Wise people won't think that they are so wise anymore. And smart people won't think that they are so smart anymore.
00:07:07
Speaker
Where is the wise person? Where is the thinker? makes the world's wise thinking look foolish. All of people's wise thinking did not show them God.
00:07:24
Speaker
God saved people who believed what they were taught about him. And these things that were taught seemed foolish, but that's the way God wanted to do it.
00:07:37
Speaker
The Jews want to see miracles and wonders. The Greeks want to see wise thinking. But we teach about how Jesus died.
00:07:49
Speaker
It doesn't make sense to Jewish people and it seems foolish to other people, but some Jews and some Greeks believe in Jesus. So to them, Jesus is the power of god He is God's wise thinking.
00:08:09
Speaker
Now, what if God could be foolish? He would still be wiser than wise people. And what if God were not strong? He would still be stronger than strong people.
00:08:23
Speaker
Think about what you were like when God chose you. Not many of you were wise. Not many of you were strong, and not many of you were from rich, important families.
00:08:40
Speaker
God chose things that look foolish to the world, and that way, wise people don't seem so important. God chose things that look weak to the world.
00:08:53
Speaker
He chose things that the world doesn't like, and that way, what the world thinks is important looks like nothing.
00:09:05
Speaker
I came to see you before and I told you about God, but I did not come with great wise thinking. I chose to talk about one thing. I chose to talk about Jesus.
00:09:19
Speaker
And I chose to talk about how he died for us. My message showed the Spirit's power. not my wise thinking.
00:09:31
Speaker
And you believed because of God's power. God planned to show his power in us but before time began. Isaiah said it this way, no eye has seen what God has planned and no ear has heard what God has planned and no mind has thought of God's plans.
00:09:55
Speaker
His plans are for people who love Him. God showed us His plans by His Spirit. And only a person's spirit knows that person's thoughts.
00:10:08
Speaker
And it's the same way with God. No one knows what God is thinking. Only God's Spirit knows His thoughts. But we did not get the spirit of the world.
00:10:24
Speaker
We got God's spirit and now we can understand what God freely gave us. We don't use words that wise people,
00:10:38
Speaker
ah pardon me, we don't use words
00:10:48
Speaker
We don't use words that wise thinking taught us. We use words that the Spirit taught us. We talk about truth with the Spirit's words.
00:11:03
Speaker
Some people don't have God's Spirit. And so they do not believe what comes from God's Spirit. And it seems like foolishness to them. They can't understand it You have to understand and it with your spirit.
00:11:22
Speaker
Isaiah said it this way. Who knows what's in God's mind? Whoever told him what he should do? But we have the same mind that Jesus has.
00:11:38
Speaker
And you have not been able to understand things about the spirit, and that's because you are thinking like people of the world. You are just babies in God's family.
00:11:50
Speaker
So the words that I have said to you have been like milk for a baby. You have not been ready for more. You still act and think like the world.
00:12:02
Speaker
You try to be like other people. You fuss with each other and one of you says, i

Spiritual Maturity and Denominational Unity

00:12:08
Speaker
follow Paul. I follow Apollos, the other says. and aren't you just acting like people of the world?
00:12:17
Speaker
After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? are just servants. We work for God. The good news about Jesus is like a planted seed.
00:12:30
Speaker
I planted the seed and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. The person who not important, important.
00:12:44
Speaker
It is God who is important. makes things grow. so you know that all of you are God's worship house?
00:12:56
Speaker
You are the temple of God. Did you know that God's Spirit lives in you? if someone tears down God's worship house? well, then God will tear that person down.
00:13:09
Speaker
And that's because God's worship house is special. That is you. So don't fool yourself. You may think you are wise, but to God, wise thinking, the world's wise thinking, is foolish.
00:13:29
Speaker
The Psalm says it this way. Wise people's thoughts are not good for anything.
00:13:37
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today. Wasn't that exciting? Didn't you just love that? my gosh, I thought it was amazing.
00:13:48
Speaker
ah Paul is so eloquent when he writes. He just, he really explains things well. He is doing what we saw Apollos doing yesterday, where we talked about the fact that he was very learned in the scriptures and he was able to use the scriptures, but he is also using God's spirit to talk to our spirit, to your spirit, to the Corinthian spirit.
00:14:12
Speaker
And he is explaining to them that we are one. We don't need to talk about who we're following. If you are Lutheran, then you are following the teachings of, I forget, something Luther.
00:14:25
Speaker
um And that is a division. And our big Bible puts it this way, that we are all laid with the same foundation.
00:14:36
Speaker
And Jesus is that foundation. That's not included in our reading here, um in our modified short version. But if we do get the gist of of what Paul is saying. But there is so much more detail that Paul gives us in those letters to the Corinthians.
00:14:54
Speaker
So I really do want to encourage you to head up your big Bible to check out the letters of the first Corinthians chapters one, two, and three. It won't take you very long to read them. They're not that long.
00:15:07
Speaker
but they are rich in meat. Paul tells the Corinthians today that they have not been ready for more mature teaching because they are still acting like the world.
00:15:20
Speaker
They only are ready for the milk. But you, you have been following along and God has pointed you toward this event and you are watching or listening.
00:15:30
Speaker
So we're going to put some more meat into our teaching today. Paul tells us today that we have the mind of Jesus. So what does that mean that we have the mind of Jesus?
00:15:44
Speaker
It means that we are on the same page as Jesus. We are going for the same goals as Jesus. We have the same mindset. We are thinking in the same type of way that Jesus is thinking.
00:15:58
Speaker
We are his disciples. That means we are his students. We are his followers. We are to imitate him. And so when we imitate him, we are transforming our mind.
00:16:11
Speaker
And our behavior starts with our mind so that we change how we do things. We stop thinking about things in terms of the world and putting teams against each other with who we are following or or what division we are part of.
00:16:27
Speaker
And instead we focus on the big picture and that's that we are meant to glorify God. We are all doing the same work. It doesn't matter whether we are planting seeds or whether we are watering seeds or whether we are feeding.
00:16:41
Speaker
We are all just servants of God. It is God who is important. And that's what we've been focusing on this year in our event, is learning how to make our focus like what Jesus taught us.
00:16:55
Speaker
And that's to make God the most important one. And we show that God is the most important one by obeying him. And by behaving and living our lives the way he wants us to live our lives, and he communicates these desires to us in our spirit.
00:17:14
Speaker
So we need to be listening for God with our spirit. And Paul explains that the ways of the spirit can seem weak. People of the world today can say, oh, religion is just a crutch.
00:17:27
Speaker
I don't need that crutch to lean on. I can do this myself. Well, to the world's ways, it looks like foolishness. But Paul explains to us today that in reality, God is power.

Expressing Joy in God Like David

00:17:42
Speaker
Jesus's cross freeing us from the bondage of sin is power. We are not slaves to the world's ways. We are now free, free to choose and not remain in our sinful behaviors of the world.
00:17:59
Speaker
And we have every right to look just as foolish to the world as we would like to, because it is God's ways who are not foolish. It reminds me, i am suddenly reminded of um David when he was dancing with joy and his wife told him that he looked foolish by dancing around with the great joy that he had.
00:18:21
Speaker
And he said, you know what? I will look even more foolish than this because his joy was great and he was dancing for God. And then actually in the Messianic Jewish tradition, and even I think in the Jewish tradition, they actually have dancing.
00:18:36
Speaker
During the worship service. Can you believe that? There is like a circle in our ah congregation. And you can join and it's called Davidic dancing.
00:18:51
Speaker
And that is the joy of your spirit.
00:18:56
Speaker
Dancing because you have so much joy. And so my goodness, my phone, I need to put that on silent. Forgive me. And that is the joy of our spirit.
00:19:10
Speaker
Let the world think we look foolish. You know, David's wife was actually given a consequence or insulting David and telling him that he looked foolish in his worship of God.
00:19:22
Speaker
And the Bible tells us that she was no longer permitted to have any more children. God closed her womb as a result of her behavior. So it is... not foolishness to God for us to follow him, to express our joy and to do things his way.
00:19:41
Speaker
We want to be sure that we are listening and obeying God with our spirit and not following the world's ways. The world's ways want to encourage individualism.
00:19:54
Speaker
And I love how our big Bible puts it. It's that we identify with Jesus. In today's world, we have a lot of a quote I identify as this. I identify as that Meaning like it could be as a man or as a woman.
00:20:12
Speaker
And we need to identify with Jesus. That is where we get our identity. We get our identity from God. We don't get it from the world.
00:20:24
Speaker
And that's just the same old tricks that our adversary wants to put into our path. the ways of the world. He is the prince of this world.
00:20:34
Speaker
So he wants us to do things his way. And that is separate from God. We want to be unified, one in spirit. And remember that we are all on the same team.
00:20:47
Speaker
We are all working for God. And we have the mind of God, meaning that we have now the same goals as God, which is what Jesus has. And that's to further God's kingdom, to worship and to glorify God, to make followers for Jesus.
00:21:05
Speaker
to teach others how to be followers of Jesus. We don't make anybody to do anything. God gives us free will. So that's not a very good word to choose. We are to show people how to be imitators of Jesus. And we do that by imitating Jesus ourselves.

Believers as the Temple of God

00:21:23
Speaker
One more important thing we learned today. We are the temple of God because God's spirit now resides within us rather than being solely at the temple where his presence was limited to the most holy of holies place, which was separated by a curtain.
00:21:43
Speaker
And the priest could only enter in there at certain time of the year to make atonement for sins. But when Jesus died, he made that atonement and God tore pour that veil from top to bottom.
00:21:59
Speaker
And then he poured out his spirit, just like he said he was going to do, so that he would write his law on our hearts. These are things that we understand with our spirit.
00:22:12
Speaker
We are the holy temple of God. So if people tear down our temple, God will tear them down, Paul tells us today. Because we are vessels. We are something which hold the Holy Spirit.
00:22:29
Speaker
We received God's Holy Spirit when we became believers. So I hope that you are encouraged today and that you understand God's word with God's spirit that he has within you and that you are just overjoyed.
00:22:44
Speaker
hope that you can't wait to share today's reading with somebody. We can help share that word about spreading the word about reading God's word.

Sharing and Being a Light in the World

00:22:52
Speaker
That's a lot of word.
00:22:55
Speaker
We can do that by clicking our light button. I am just so passionate about people knowing these amazing, wonderful, good news for us. And we can click that light button. It looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart. It looks like a share, follow, subscribe button.
00:23:12
Speaker
And you know what? Go out into the world. Be that light in the world. Even if you're not clicking like, or or the heart or whatever your light button is here on the social media of your choice, Pandora, Amazon Music, Apple Music, YouTube Music, iHeartRadio, Podbean, Podcast, Overcast, Cast Off.
00:23:35
Speaker
You are the light of the world. So as you go out into your day today, it is my prayer that you will ask God to show you who he has put into your path today to share this awesome news with you. It's not just good.
00:23:51
Speaker
This news is awesome. Awesome. God's spirit will connect you in your spirit to somebody else's spirit today. I love when he does that. He connected me with someone yesterday, and I'm anxious to see who he's going to connect me with today.
00:24:08
Speaker
It's so exciting. And share what you read about today, what you learned, so that you can be a source of encouragement and um learning for somebody. They may not know or understand that particular inheritance that we have.
00:24:25
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today on this October 29th for our daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible. And I hope that you are hungry for more of God's word and are motivated to join me again for tomorrow's reading.
00:24:38
Speaker
