Today's we will continue reading Paul's first letter to the Corinthians with Chapters 13 and 14.

Today we will read about what Paul calls, "The BEST way" to live out our spiritual gifts- IN LOVE, using our gifts FOR EACH OTHER!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how love should be the foundation for everything we do. Everything we do, we need to do it WITH LOVE. Every spiritual gift we have we need to be thinking of how we can use it to help one another, not for how we can spotlight ourselves. The goal is to spotlight Jesus and God! We will also talk about how these are not new ways to live; they are the very foundation of everything God has ever given us as rules for living. We have ALWAYS been taught that the greatest laws are to love the Lord our God with all of our hearts, minds, and souls, and to love one another as ourselves. This is not new teaching, it is just expanding our understanding so that we know how to behave and live with one another while using the tools that God has given us the correct way.

Introduction and Bible Reading

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome back, everybody. Today is November 3rd. My name is Robin. I'm within the Family Way Coaching. I will be your reader today, and it is my pleasure to bring us our daily Bible reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:19
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me again today. i hope that you are waiting for our cliffhanger of how to live the best way. Paul is going to be telling us about that today in 1 Corinthians chapters 13 and 14.

The Importance of Love in Spiritual Gifts

00:00:34
Speaker
If you are following along on your bookmarking commitment calendar, it's time to get that out. It's time to get out that sticker or your crayon or your pen, whatever you're using to mark off those days, because we're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:55
Speaker
Yesterday's reading was so awesome. It's one of my favorite readings about the fruits of the, not fruits of the spirit, rather gifts, spiritual gifts. And as Paul was telling us that we are all a very important part of the body.
00:01:09
Speaker
We all have something special to do. No matter what it is, though, we're supposed to do it with today's reading in mind. So let's head right into it. I'm going to give us a little reminder of the last thing that Paul says.
00:01:24
Speaker
He says in yesterday's reading, I hope you will want the greatest gifts, so I will show you the best way.
00:01:35
Speaker
Continuing today, Paul says, let's say I talk in different languages. It could be languages of people or angels. But what if I don't love people?
00:01:48
Speaker
Well, then I am only like a bell with a loud ring and it rings for no reason. Let's say i can tell you what God wants people to know, or i can understand all kinds of mysteries.
00:02:04
Speaker
Let's say i know everything. Let's say i have faith big enough to move mountains. But if I don't love people, then I am nothing.
00:02:18
Speaker
What if I give everything I have to give for poor people? And what if I give up my whole life for Jesus? But what if I don't love people? Well, then it doesn't do me any good.
00:02:32
Speaker
Love waits patiently. Love is kind. It doesn't want what others have. It doesn't brag.
00:02:43
Speaker
It isn't proud. It has good manners. Ooh, love has good manners. It does not think of itself ahead of others.
00:02:56
Speaker
It doesn't get angry very fast. It doesn't try to remember who was wrong. o Love is not happy with sin.
00:03:07
Speaker
Instead, love is happy to know the truth. And love always takes care of people. Love always trusts. It always hopes.
00:03:20
Speaker
It always keeps going. Love never fails.

Understanding and Growing in Faith

00:03:27
Speaker
Telling what God has to stay will stop someday. And talking in different languages will stop someday. And knowing things will stop someday.
00:03:38
Speaker
and right now, we only know part of what there is to know. And we can only tell part of what God has to say. But someday, someday we will know all about God.
00:03:54
Speaker
And what's good mean and and right will come. And then what's not good or clean or right will fade away.
00:04:06
Speaker
Once I was a little child. I talked like a child. I thought like a child. But then I grew up and so I wasn't like a child anymore.
00:04:19
Speaker
And what I see now seems dim and fuzzy. And that's because I only know a part. It's like being a child. But someday I will see God face to face.
00:04:35
Speaker
And that is like growing up. And then will know all about God. And just like God knows all about me.
00:04:48
Speaker
And there are three things that will always be with us. They are faith, hope, and love. But love is the best.
00:05:03
Speaker
So follow love's way. And I hope that you want gifts for your spirit. But I hope that you want one thing more than anything.

Using Spiritual Gifts for Others

00:05:13
Speaker
And that's to have the gift of telling what God has to say.
00:05:17
Speaker
The big word for that is prophecy. People who pray in different languages are talking to God, but they are not talking to other people. Nobody can understand them.
00:05:30
Speaker
They talk with their spirits, and so it's all a mystery. People who tell what God has to say do talk to other people. And God's words help other people to be strong and brave.
00:05:46
Speaker
It builds them up. His words help others feel better. And the person who prays in a different language helps himself. But the person who tells what God has to say helps Jesus' followers.
00:06:04
Speaker
And I wish everybody could pray in different languages, but more than that, i wish that everyone could tell what God has to say. People who can do that are greater.
00:06:18
Speaker
Let's say I come to you and I pray in another language. What good will that do for you unless I teach you something? Think about things that make music.
00:06:30
Speaker
There are flutes and pipes. There are harps with many strings. And these things are not alive, but they do make sounds.
00:06:41
Speaker
And what if the different notes are not played clearly? Well, then how are people going to know what the song is? And you see, it's the same way with you.
00:06:53
Speaker
What if we cannot understand your language? Then how will we know what you are saying? You will just be talking to the air.
00:07:04
Speaker
There are all kinds of languages in the world and the words all have meaning. But maybe I don't understand what somebody is saying and then I might as well be from another land. And it's the same way with you.
00:07:20
Speaker
You want gifts for your spirits. So try to get gifts that help God's people. People who talk in different languages need to pray.
00:07:32
Speaker
And they should pray that if they that they can tell what they are saying to other people. Because if I pray in a different language, it's my spirit that is praying. But my mind doesn't even understand.
00:07:46
Speaker
So what can I do? I will pray with my spirit. but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind too.
00:08:01
Speaker
So what if you praise God only with your spirit? Others may hear you, but they don't understand you. So how can they say, amen? Yes, when they don't know what you are saying.
00:08:14
Speaker
You may be doing a great job of giving thanks to God, but that doesn't help other people. I thank God that I can talk in different languages. But there are times that I meet with Jesus' followers and then I am just glad to say five words that people can understand.
00:08:32
Speaker
And that way, I can teach them. And that's better than 10,000 words that people can't understand. So what can we say? You get together and everybody has something to share.
00:08:46
Speaker
Someone might sing a song. Someone has something to teach and someone has something to say that God has shown him. And someone talks in a different language and someone tells the meaning of that language.
00:09:01
Speaker
It should all be done to help God's people. Now what if people talk in different languages? Well then two or three people should talk and they should take turns but also somebody should tell what they mean.
00:09:19
Speaker
An interpreter. What if there isn't anybody to tell what they mean? No interpreter. Then the person with the different language should just remain quiet.
00:09:32
Speaker
He should just talk to himself and to God. What if there are people who tell what God has to say? Then two or three people should talk and the others should think carefully about what they said.
00:09:45
Speaker
What if God shows something to somebody who is sitting down? Well, then the first person should stop talking and you can all take turns. That way everyone can learn things and be cheered up.
00:10:00
Speaker
God does not make things go out of order. He makes things happen in peace. So don't tell people that they cannot talk in different languages.
00:10:11
Speaker
Just do everything the right way.

Practical Aspects of Love

00:10:14
Speaker
Take turns and do it in order.
00:10:19
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:10:23
Speaker
There's also an additional verse that is not included in our reading today that I'm going to read us and It's in 1 Corinthians chapter 14, and it starts verse 22. It says,
00:10:37
Speaker
it says and different languages tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers but ah see however telling what god wants people to know is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers So if Messiah's whole community comes together and everyone is speaking in tongues and someone who is uninstructed or unbelieving comes in and they can't understand everything you are saying is what Paul is saying, won't they say that you are crazy?
00:11:11
Speaker
But if everybody is prophesying, telling what God's plans are, and some unbelieving or ungifted person comes then he is convicted by all.
00:11:23
Speaker
He is called to account by all. Because the secrets of his heart have become known. And so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring, God is really among you.
00:11:39
Speaker
Let all things be done for edification, for building one another up.
00:11:47
Speaker
So what Paul is saying is that he is continuing on with the spiritual gifts that he's talking about earlier in yesterday's reading. And apparently it was quite common in that they all wanted to just speak in tongues.
00:11:59
Speaker
And that's great, Paul is saying, but nobody can understand what you're saying. So there needs to be an interpreter. Otherwise, it's not doing anything to build one another up. And the most important gift is love.
00:12:14
Speaker
Jesus said that if we love one another, people will know that we are his followers. He says this was a new commandment that he gave us to love one another the way that he showed us that he loves us.
00:12:30
Speaker
So whatever gift we have, we need to be doing it with others in mind. Just like when we are considering not sinning or not doing something that somebody else might consider a sin, we are thinking of other people.
00:12:46
Speaker
So Paul is expanding on this idea of doing things for the sake of others. We are always to think of other people too, not just ourselves.
00:13:00
Speaker
I love that. We are no matter what we do, we can have a tendency to think of ourselves. We can be can we can think of ourselves as having wonderful gifts that we are so proud and that God has given us these gifts.
00:13:15
Speaker
But Paul explains today that love is not proud and it doesn't brag about what it has. Love is thinking about other people. So whatever gift we have, whether it's the gift of teaching, whether it's having a lot of faith in God, everything we do is not so we can say, look what I have, look what I can do, look what God has given me.
00:13:39
Speaker
But instead, it is to be used to benefit other people. And that is our daily application today. So I hope that you are encouraged that whatever your gift is, that it's not to be a bragging point, but it's to be something that we can ask God to show us.
00:13:59
Speaker
Lord, how can I use the gifts that you have given me today for other people? So that we are not thinking about ourselves and how awesome we are.
00:14:10
Speaker
Today I was thinking about, it made me think, ah be reminded about um somebody that I used to be in a Bible study with. And this person um was always upset and bothered by the fact that they felt that they had so much knowledge, which Paul says today, what if I know everything?
00:14:31
Speaker
And that they had gone to missionary school. And that they felt that that they should be looked to. They wanted everybody to look to them for their thoughts on what was what was ah being studied that week.
00:14:45
Speaker
Because they wanted to be lifted up. And Jesus tells us that we are not to lift ourselves up, but we are to let others do that. And so they were anticipating that other people should be looking to their great wisdom.
00:15:01
Speaker
for ah guidance in and instruction. And so they were always upset that nobody was asking them to lead. And they would say, well, um I know more than anybody here.
00:15:13
Speaker
I went to missionary school. I know all of these things, but they were never loving. They were not kind and thoughtful of one another.
00:15:24
Speaker
They were very focused on the fact that they wanted everybody to spotlight them. And that is not what love is about. So they had all this great knowledge, but they had it without love.
00:15:39
Speaker
And so it was very obvious. And so it was very off-putting so that nobody wanted to hear what this person had to say because they were more interested in looking at them and wanting attention to be brought to them.
00:15:53
Speaker
And then they would get very grumpy with everybody when that attention wasn't given to them. So we want to be sure that as we are looking to use the gifts that God has given us,
00:16:06
Speaker
that we are not looking to advance ourselves, that we are not looking to spotlight ourselves, but that we are looking to edify, and edify to educate, to help, to benefit others, to be thinking about others.
00:16:22
Speaker
Jesus told us a story. He said that when you go into ah like a wedding or any other important event, don't go sit down at the most important seat because the um the person who is throwing the event may come to you and say, I need you to move. I have somebody else that I want to sit here.
00:16:42
Speaker
And then you will be embarrassed that you have had to go take another seat. But if when you go in somewhere, take the lower seat so that then the host or hostess may come to you and say, come on over, I have a better seat for you.
00:16:57
Speaker
And then they will have lifted you up rather than us lifting ourselves up. So it can be very tempting sometimes because we can feel like we have these great gifts and we're excited to use them.
00:17:10
Speaker
But we have to be careful. We have to be careful that we are not trying to spotlight ourselves. Our goal is to spotlight Jesus, to spotlight God.
00:17:20
Speaker
We are to draw people to God.

Love's Endurance and Power

00:17:23
Speaker
We're not meant to draw people to ourselves. We are meant to draw people to God. And that is what we have to try to remember. And it can be hard sometimes. We can be prideful.
00:17:33
Speaker
And we want to be sure that we keep that in check as we use all of these wonderful spiritual gifts. And not to think, like we talked about yesterday, that our gift is more important than somebody else's gift.
00:17:47
Speaker
Paul talked a lot about that yesterday. And then just like parts of the body, no one gift is is more wonderful. Although Paul does say today that when we are telling other people what God wants us to know, that that is a greater gift.
00:18:03
Speaker
And that's because all of God's word is is excellent and useful for teaching, for correction, and for teaching us how to be prepared for all of the good works that God has for us to do.
00:18:18
Speaker
And so we when we use that and we are doing it for other people, that is the one exception where that is the greater gift Paul is explaining. but that we are all important.
00:18:29
Speaker
All of our gifts are important. And no matter how small your gift may seem, it is still important. you You are still a part of the body and we cannot be a whole body without all of God's gifts.
00:18:46
Speaker
So I hope that you are encouraged in today's daily application to do all to use all of your gifts with love, because Paul says that that is the greatest way. I hope that you are hungry for more of God's Word. Feel free to head up your Big Bible.
00:19:01
Speaker
I'm actually going to go ahead and read our our Big Bible version of... the description of love. We're often very familiar with this, but I love how ah our day-by-day kids Bible words are gifts of love, of the description of how love behaves.
00:19:20
Speaker
So before we go, let's look at that one more time to see how we've talked about how not to behave. Let's talk about how love looks when it's in action. Love in action.
00:19:31
Speaker
Spotlight. Let's spotlight love today. You know, God is all love. God is love. And he wants us to be like him. So these lessons in love are the most important lessons that we can take away aside from ah loving God with all of our heart, with all of our mind, and with all of our soul, it's still love.
00:19:54
Speaker
But we are also to love each other, love our neighbor as o ourselves. These are all the same rules that when Jesus was here and he was asked, teacher, what is the greatest, what are the greatest laws?
00:20:07
Speaker
And he said, those what we just said, to love the Lord, our God, with all our heart, all our mind and all our soul and to love one another. So this is all the same stuff.
00:20:19
Speaker
But Jesus showed us how to love. And now we are learning even more about how to love by what it does and what it does not look like. So in our day-by-day kids Bible, Karen Henley interprets it and gives us an easy way to understand it.
00:20:36
Speaker
She says, love waits quietly. Love is kind. It doesn't want what others have. That's coveting.
00:20:48
Speaker
It doesn't brag. It isn't proud. It has good manners. I love that one. Love has good manners. That's being thoughtful of others and being loving when we use our good manners with them.
00:21:03
Speaker
Don't you love that? It does not think of itself ahead of others. It doesn't get angry very fast. It doesn't try to remember who was wrong.
00:21:15
Speaker
Love is not happy with sin. Instead, love is happy to know the truth. And remember, Jesus told us that the truth will set us free.
00:21:26
Speaker
Love always takes care of people. Love always trusts. It always hopes. It always keeps going. Love never fails.
00:21:40
Speaker
if Remember, we are on the winning side. Jesus won over death and God, he is our great creator and he knows the end of the story. He has told us with our spoiler alert, he wins. He's already won.
00:21:56
Speaker
It may look like the world is winning with all of its hate and anger and distrust and encouragement to not trust one another and to just be solitary and to not come together in community.
00:22:09
Speaker
But we need to remember that that is not what love is about. And even if it looks like we're on the losing side sometimes, we are not. We are on the winning side. Love never fails.
00:22:20
Speaker
Never.
00:22:23
Speaker
Let's see. Love is patient in our big Bible, it says. Love is kind. It does not envy. it does not brag. It is not puffed up.
00:22:35
Speaker
It does not behave inappropriately. It does not seek its own way. It is not provoked. It keeps no account of wrong.
00:22:47
Speaker
It does not rejoice over injustice, but love rejoices in the truth. Love bears all things. It hopes all things.
00:22:58
Speaker
It endures all things. Paul told us recently when the believers in Corinth were having a difficult time with one another and they were taking one another to court.
00:23:09
Speaker
this is and This is consistent with what Paul told them when he said, Let the other person hurt you. Let them lie to you because God sees and judges. He knows all things.
00:23:21
Speaker
Love never fails.
00:23:26
Speaker
These three will always remain faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love.
00:23:39
Speaker
So I hope that you are encouraged today to love, even though it may seem like people are not responding or ah sometimes my husband gets frustrated. He says, he says, it doesn't do any good to do the right thing.
00:23:52
Speaker
And I said, well, yeah we're not doing it because we're expecting to receive a physical reward for it, for somebody around town to go congratulations and pat you on the back and say, wow, you did the right thing. We're supposed to do the right thing because it's the right thing to do.
00:24:07
Speaker
God sees and God will reward. And in heaven, we are building up treasures. So even if it seems like people are hurting you anyways, do the right thing and love because God sees our love. We are called to love, not only love so far as people love us.
00:24:25
Speaker
Jesus says that even the pagans do that if we they only love each other, but love those who persecute you. Pray for those who hurt you. It's not just an um a rule to just love each other.
00:24:38
Speaker
We are also supposed to love those who hurt us. We are supposed to pray for them. Jesus says that that is what will set us apart. And so i want to remind us of that today, that as we are loving people, remember, it's not just to love those in the body, but it's to love everybody.
00:24:57
Speaker
Because Jesus says that if we only love those who love us, how are we any different? from anyone else in the world. Even the pagans do that. But we are called to love everybody just as Jesus and God love everybody.

Spreading Love and Teachings

00:25:13
Speaker
And God does not desire anyone to perish, but he wants everybody to come to eternal life with him. So that means we need to love them, even if it doesn't seem like they're loving us back.
00:25:26
Speaker
Jesus loved everybody. And even as he was standing on the cross dying, he said, Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing. Jesus said no greater love has anybody than to lay down their life for a friend.
00:25:41
Speaker
And Jesus laid down his life for us in love. So I hope that you are encouraged. I would encourage you also to click your light button. We are the light of the world.
00:25:52
Speaker
Let's encourage others to hear God's word. Let's spread the word about reading God's word. We can do that by clicking that thumbs up button. It's really a light button. We can do it by clicking the heart.
00:26:05
Speaker
Also really a light button. We can share this event with other people. We can talk about it, even if we're just sharing it by our words. That is still sharing it to tell people what you read about or heard about today in our daily Bible reading.
00:26:19
Speaker
We can share this on social media. There is a share button I know on my website. I'm not sure if YouTube itself allows you to share it on social media. I'm not really sure about all that, but it is available on my website and i have the links down below.
00:26:36
Speaker
ah where you can find it at in the family way coaching.com. And it has individual share buttons for how you want to share it to like Instagram or, or um Facebook.
00:26:49
Speaker
And I do post this on TikTok as well. So if you ah find it on TikTok, you can always share it there as well. So I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you have gotten around to listening to or watching our November 3rd daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:27:06
Speaker
And I hope that you will join me for tomorrow. I hope that you are hungry for more of God's word for tomorrow as we go through and we read the entire Bible this year. So until we meet again, hope you have a fantastic day and see you next time.
