Today's reading will cover 2 Corinthian's Chapter 9:2-7, 11, and 15, Chapter 10:1-5, 8-13, 17-18, and Chapter 11:2-5, 13-15, and 21-33.

Today we will read more about giving. Paul reminds us that when we give it should be because we want to, not because we feel forced or that we have to. God loves it when we give cheerfully, not out of obligation. We will also read about what it means to "boast in the Lord," or to "brag about God." Paul reminds us today that although we live in the world we do not fight the way the world does because our power that we fight with comes from God. And what are we fighting against? Paul tells us that we fight against anything that comes against knowing God. We do so by catching every thought and making it obey Jesus.

In our discussion for daily application we will break down what it means to brag about God by reading Jeremiah 9:23, where God Himself tells us that if anyone wants to brag, it should be about knowing and understand God because God exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on the earth and He DELIGHTS IN THESE THINGS.  Paul told us that we fight against anything that comes against knowing God, which means we fight against anything that is the OPPOSITE of what God delights in. The opposite of what God delights in is hate, unfairness, sinful behaviors. The power we fight with comes from God. What have we received from God? HIS HOLY SPIRIT. This power FROM GOD, Paul tells us today, TEARS DOWN SATAN'S STRONGHOLDS (aka, sinful behaviors.) Jesus taught us that HE HAS SET US FREE FROM SIN, and that IF THE SON HAS SET US FREE (from sin) THEN WE ARE REALLY FREE!! This means that we, through GOD'S POWER, are able to catch every thought and make it obey Jesus, Paul tells us today. So let us catch our thoughts and make them obey Jesus, with lovingkindness, justice (fairness) and righteousness, and then we can brag about knowing and understanding God, something God tells us we CAN brag about.

00:01:34
Speaker
Today we are going to be picking up in the second book of Corinthians in chapters 9, 10, and 11, I believe it is today.
00:01:45
Speaker
Yes, 9, 10, and 11. And today we are going to be looking at what it means to boast in the Lord or to brag in God or to brag about God. However, it's easier for you to understand it.
00:02:00
Speaker
that's It's all the same thing. Paul is writing in his letter to the Corinthians, and he's talked a number of times about the fact that if we're going to brag, then we need to brag about God.
00:02:13
Speaker
And today we're going to get into what it means and why we would talk about bragging about God. It's not just simply bragging about God and how awesome he is.
00:02:25
Speaker
It is something else specifically, and I don't want to give it away yet. We're going to read about it, and then we will talk about it. and why. So thank you for following along.
00:02:38
Speaker
We are going to begin our reading today. Now, as we left off yesterday, Paul was talking to the Corinthians about their generosity and about their giving.
00:02:50
Speaker
So he is talking about a specific big big gift that all of the churches have been gathering together for what they call the saints, the other believers. And it looks like that they were supposed to give this gift to those who were in Jerusalem who were experiencing hardship.
00:03:10
Speaker
And so this was something that Paul is going to be talking about, that he has asked them in a previous day's reading to put aside some each week for this rather than wait until the time comes and then it would be burdensome.
00:03:28
Speaker
And so that's a good bit of financial advice in general, that it's easier if we have some kind of a fund that we are trying to fund or ah some kind of um a bill that we are trying to pay, that it can be easier to tackle. And I know personally I do this, i at least I try. I'm not always successful.
00:03:48
Speaker
But i take the whole amount of the bills and i divide it into my paychecks and then I calculate what I need to pay out of each paycheck for the bill.
00:04:00
Speaker
Now some bills you can pay weekly. So as I get paid, I can put money toward that bill and then ah I'm good for the week. And I try to do that on certain things that, um like if I buy something on promotional balance, like ah like when I bought my washer, ah they had like interest-free thing for x number of months, like a year or something.
00:04:22
Speaker
And so I take that amount and I divide it by the number of weeks. And then i pay that amount each week. And again, I say I try, I don't always succeed, but that's my general goal. So that's what Paul is talking about a little bit with the gifting And so we're going to be picking up ah in Paul with Paul talking about this big gift and their joyful giving.
00:04:48
Speaker
And then we will get into ah talking about what it means to boast in the Lord and why.
00:04:58
Speaker
You are ready to help. I have been bragging about it to the people in Macedonia. And I told them that you have been ready to give for a year.
00:05:10
Speaker
So they know you want to give and most of them are giving too. And I said you would be ready to give, but I am sending some men, so you really will be ready.
00:05:22
Speaker
Some people from Macedonia might come with me because what if you weren't ready? well then we would feel bad and you would feel bad too.
00:05:33
Speaker
So I think it's good to send these men. Remember this, if you plant little, you will grow a little. If you plant a lot, you will grow a lot.
00:05:49
Speaker
And people should give because they want to, not because they have to. God loves people who are happy to give. And God will make you rich in every way.
00:06:03
Speaker
And then you can give a lot anytime. And your big giving will bring thanks to God. And we thank God for his son because he is the best gift.
00:06:21
Speaker
Now you say that I am shy when I am face to face with you, but you say that I am bold when I am away. And I have to be bold with some people because they are people who think we live in the world's way. And we may live in the world, but we do not fight the way the world does.
00:06:44
Speaker
What we fight with has power from god and it tears down the enemy's strong places. Our Big Bible uses the word strongholds.
00:06:56
Speaker
The way we fight has power from God, and it tears down the enemy's strongholds. And we fight anything that comes against knowing God.
00:07:09
Speaker
We catch every thought, and we make those thoughts obey Jesus. Sometimes I tell about how God put us in charge, and that is to build you up, not to pull you down.
00:07:25
Speaker
So I won't feel bad about that. Now, I don't want to scare you with my letters. Some people say, oh he writes powerful letters.
00:07:36
Speaker
But when you see him, he is nothing. And that is not true because when we come, we will do what we have said in our letters.
00:07:48
Speaker
We do not dare act like some people. They say how good they are. But they are measuring themselves by themselves. And that is not wise.
00:08:01
Speaker
And we will not brag more than we should. We will brag only about what God has given us. Jeremiah said it this way.
00:08:16
Speaker
Jeremiah 9, 23 says, But let one who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me. For I am the Lord who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth.
00:08:34
Speaker
For in these things I delight. It is a declaration of the Lord.
00:08:42
Speaker
I gave us the full version. in in In 2 Corinthians, Paul just says, but let him who boasts, boast in the Lord. He is giving a small part of that quotation from Jeremiah, but we're going to be looking at that full quotation.
00:09:01
Speaker
Paul goes on to say, we can say that we are good, but that does not make us right with God. God will say who is good. And that is the person who is right with him.
00:09:15
Speaker
In the big Bible, it tells us it is not the one who praises himself or who commends himself, who is considered right with God, but the one whom the Lord commends, which means to consider right.
00:09:32
Speaker
I want to give you to Jesus. I want you to be clean from sin for him. But I am afraid. Maybe you believed a lie, like how Eve believed the snake's words.
00:09:47
Speaker
And maybe you went away from the true, clean love that you had for Jesus. What if somebody teaches you about a different Jesus? And what if you follow a different spirit?
00:10:01
Speaker
What if you look for a different kind of good news? Now, some people think they are greater than apostles. They must be super apostles.
00:10:12
Speaker
And I do not think that I am less important than they are. These people are not true apostles. They lie. They pretend that they are apostles of Jesus.
00:10:26
Speaker
And it's no wonder, because even Satan pretends that he is an angel of light. So I'm not surprised when his servants pretend that they are servants of what is right.
00:10:39
Speaker
They will end up getting what is coming to them.
00:10:43
Speaker
Now think about what others brag about. I will also dare to brag. Are they Jewish? So am I. Are they God's people?
00:10:56
Speaker
So am I. Are they from Abraham's family? So am I. Do they serve Jesus? I serve Jesus even more.
00:11:10
Speaker
I am silly to talk this way, but I have worked harder. i have been in jail more often. I have been beaten harder. i have been left for dead again and again.
00:11:23
Speaker
Five times the Jewish leaders beat me, and each time they beat me 39 times. This was the amount that was commanded by God that they should nobody should be beaten more than 40 lashes minus one.
00:11:38
Speaker
40 lashes. So instead of doing 40, they would do 40 minus one. So they hit him 39 times. And three times they beat me with rods.
00:11:49
Speaker
They threw rocks at me once. Three times I was in a ship that crashed. And for a night and a day, I was in the sea. I have moved around all the time.
00:12:01
Speaker
I have been in danger from rivers. I've been in danger from my own people, as well as from people who are not Jewish. I have been in danger in the city and in the country.
00:12:12
Speaker
ah have been in danger in sea. And I have been in danger from people who were not true believers. I have worked hard. And lots of times I've gone without sleep, I've been hungry and thirsty, and I have often had no food.
00:12:31
Speaker
I have been cold. And there were times when I did not have enough clothes. Every day, worry about Jesus' followers.
00:12:43
Speaker
When others are not strong, I don't feel strong. And when others sin, I get upset. In Damascus, the man in charge wanted to catch me, so he set guards up all around the city.
00:12:59
Speaker
But then my friends, they put me in a basket, and they let the basket down out of a window in the wall. So I got away. I may brag, but I will brag about things that show I am weak.
00:13:16
Speaker
God knows this is not a lie.
00:13:20
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:13:28
Speaker
What a great reading. Paul is so eloquent. I keep saying that. He has such good teaching. So today we're going to be talking about what it means for our daily application to boast in the Lord.
00:13:42
Speaker
What does it mean to brag about God? Jeremiah chapter 9 verse 23 is what explains what that means.
00:13:54
Speaker
When God spoke in Jeremiah, he said, if there is something that to understand and know so if something that we should be able to brag about it's to understand and know god because not everybody understands or knows God.
00:14:19
Speaker
For I am the Lord who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth. For in these things I delight, and it is a declaration of the Lord.
00:14:35
Speaker
So this is a declaration of the Lord. Now, if you've been around for a little while, then you may have heard us teach that what God desires is for us to know him.
00:14:46
Speaker
So God is telling us here in Jeremiah that if anybody is to brag about anything, it's to know him and to understand him. When we know and understand God, we know and understand that God has so much loving kindness.
00:15:04
Speaker
He is just and he is righteous and he rules the world with loving kindness, justice and righteousness. And these are the character traits that he wants us to share along with him.
00:15:21
Speaker
the The mark, the showing, or the mark of true power is an exercising correct power. It's not to be forceful and hurtful or mean over other people, to lord authority over other people.
00:15:41
Speaker
Our God has all power, and yet he does not treat us poorly. He does not treat us like we are nothing. God treats us with love, with fairness, with justice.
00:15:57
Speaker
And he wants us to treat other people the same way too. So when we know and understand God and who he is, then we understand that we are also to treat other people the same way that he treats us.
00:16:15
Speaker
With love, with kindness, with fairness, and to with righteousness, to be right, to treat people the right way. And Jesus taught us that we needed to love everybody.
00:16:30
Speaker
God loves everybody. As the Bible tells us, he makes the sun to shine and the rains to fall on the people who are sinful, as well as those who are not committing a lot of sins.
00:16:44
Speaker
I noticed I didn't say those without sin because none of us are without sin. So God says that if there is anything to brag about, it's that we know and understand that.
00:16:56
Speaker
So Paul tells us today, remember he was a Pharisee we spoke about, which means that he knows the law. He knows God's word. He understands it. So he is a capable teacher and he is teaching us what God has taught us from the very beginning.
00:17:16
Speaker
If that is what it means to brag about the Lord, not simply to brag about the things that he has given us, Yes, we can brag about the things that God has given us in our spiritual gifts.
00:17:29
Speaker
But we need to remember there that everybody has their individual spiritual gifts. And what we're talking about here is that when we brag in the Lord, that we are bragging about knowing and understanding him.
00:17:43
Speaker
That is what God says is boastworthy. Now, notice that Paul tells us before he explains all of that, that he says that He has to be bold with some people, the people who think that we live the world's way.
00:18:00
Speaker
We may live in the world, but we do not fight the way that the world does. We fight with power that comes from God, and it tears down the enemy's strongholds, the enemy's strong places.
00:18:15
Speaker
What are those strong places? They are areas that we struggle with in sin. They can be unforgiveness. It can be anger. And those are the things that we can fight against but with Jesus.
00:18:31
Speaker
That where we are weak, he is strong. Because Jesus has told us that he has set us free. And when we are free from him, and we are free because of him, the son.
00:18:43
Speaker
We are free for real. That is what Jesus means when he says we are free indeed. means we are free for real. We are not slaves to our sin.
00:18:56
Speaker
It says here that we catch every thought and we make those thoughts obey Jesus. That is what it means when we say that we fight anything that comes against knowing God.
00:19:11
Speaker
To brag about knowing God means that we understand those things we just said. So we are fighting against anything that comes against knowing God.
00:19:23
Speaker
Anything that is the opposite of love or kindness. Things that are the opposite of justice, which means injustice. things that are the opposite of righteousness, which is sinful behaviors.
00:19:39
Speaker
We fight against all of these things, and we fight those things with the power from God. Who is or what is that power from God?
00:19:50
Speaker
It is Jesus and the Holy Spirit that God has given us as his promise of our eternal life. Jesus has told us that he would send the helper, which he did.
00:20:05
Speaker
And the helper will speak to us those things which Jesus tells him. And Jesus says that he will only tell the Holy Spirit those things that he hears from God.
00:20:19
Speaker
So therefore, the power is from God. Does that make sense? And so we are fighting against anything.
00:20:30
Speaker
that is not brag worthy, which is to out know and understand God. So we will not brag more than we should. We will brag only about what God has given us.
00:20:46
Speaker
And we can say that we are good, but that does not make us right with God. God will say who is good. And that is the person who is right with him.
00:20:58
Speaker
So people who brag are saying how good they are. And the only thing that will make us brag worthy is if we know and understand God.
00:21:11
Speaker
And then we are, that means that we are full of love, kindness, justice, and righteousness, which God says in these things, I delight you.
00:21:25
Speaker
He's not just happy with them. He is delighted in them. So if we want God to delight in us, then we are to be loving, kind, and just, which means to be fair, loving, kind, fair, and not doing things that are sinful.
00:21:45
Speaker
Don't you love how Paul puts all of these together? That is what it means to boast in the Lord, to brag about God, Do you love it?
00:21:57
Speaker
I love it. God's teaching is so amazing. I never knew these things before today. And I love how God gives us these daily applications every day.
00:22:10
Speaker
That's one of the things that I've loved for so long and why i just had... God really put it on my heart to to do this event is because every time I read God's word, no matter what it is, I'm like, oh, man, that is amazing.
00:22:24
Speaker
That is awesome. That is so relevant. That is so applicable to today and whatever it is. And so I love that. And so that's why I have these daily readings from the day-by-day kids Bible is that it's already broken down like a devotional in 365 daily readings.
00:22:43
Speaker
And then it is just, God is so amazing and so good to give us daily application in every single day so that we can know and understand him so that he can draw us closer to him.
00:22:59
Speaker
It's so awesome, isn't it? I just love it. I don't know what I'm going to do next year. I've been talking about doing a second helping version and I'm not sure um that's what I'm going to be doing.
00:23:13
Speaker
i Sometimes when we have really hard readings, um And I guess what it comes down to is I just need to trust the Holy Spirit to give me understanding. But I just really feel like this year that I've been able to understand more than I would normally with the Holy Spirit's help because it's it's so much easier to understand.
00:23:32
Speaker
And so I guess in some ways I'm thinking the wrong way when i have when I feel discouraged against doing that. because I think, oh, i I won't be able to do it. I won't be able to understand. But it's not my understanding.
00:23:46
Speaker
It's the Holy Spirit who is giving me this. So if that is the um task that he wants for me to do next year, then that that he will make me capable of doing it. But I'm just still not sure if in general, if that's what he wants me to do, or if I'm just unwilling to let this project go.
00:24:04
Speaker
I don't transition well. So I don't know what I'm going to do next year. So that was just on my mind. And I'm just talking because this is kind of a podcast, too. So I just thought I would share that thought out loud.
00:24:16
Speaker
Well, thank you so much for your faithfulness to join me today, whatever time or day you got around to watching or listening to our November 8th daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:24:30
Speaker
I hope that today's reading has whetted your appetite. made you hungry for more of God's Word. And if you are looking to read all of the details for today's reading, then head up your Big Bible and check out 2 Corinthians chapters 9, 10, and 11, which will cover today's reading.
00:24:49
Speaker
Now, because this Bible is an abbreviated version, it does not have everything. As I mentioned, it doesn't have all of the details. So always in the daily description below, even if I don't have time, which 99% of the time I make time to give a description of what we read and then what our daily application was.
00:25:09
Speaker
Above that, I will always... um list the verses that our reading covered every day so that you will know exactly where our reading was taken from.
00:25:22
Speaker
It may not necessarily be the entire chapter. Sometimes it is, but a good bit of most of the time, it is what we would call the gist, the big story. It's not everything.
00:25:34
Speaker
It's just the the main parts of ah each chapter. And so I will always put that there. So if you're curious about just reading the parts that we covered in today's reading, I will have those verses listed for you down below in the description.
00:25:50
Speaker
But if you're hungry for even more, then that's when you would read the entire chapters or chapter of whichever one you were interested in. So specifically, this chapter dealing with boasting about God, ah that is from 2 Corinthians chapter 10, in case you are wondering about that.
00:26:10
Speaker
Well, I would like to encourage you to so check the or to click your light button. We are the light of the world, and we are meant to share God's word with other people.
00:26:23
Speaker
And so I am very passionate about that myself. So if you would kindly help me in that goal of spreading the word about reading God's word, you can help me do that by clicking your light button. but It looks like a thumbs up.
00:26:37
Speaker
It looks like a heart. It looks like a share. It looks like a follow or a subscribe. And I don't know if anybody's ever actually shared this on any kind of social media. I've never, and itt really don't keep up on a lot of the social media.
00:26:51
Speaker
I was for a while posting this on my Facebook page for In The Family Way Coaching, but I got to admit, i after posting it all day, every day, um it just, it was too much time for me. I had to cap it.
00:27:05
Speaker
I do post it on TikTok, but I don't get any shares there. ah But i I would love it if you have a way, if you do have a way, if you would feel motivated to click share when you feel that there is a particularly um applicable or useful daily reading.
00:27:23
Speaker
Because we are looking to help spread the word about reading God's word. We want people to hear these things so that they can understand what is going on in the big picture as we read through the entire Bible this year.
00:27:37
Speaker
So thank you for that. And again, thank you to Zakiya for being here. So shout out for you. Thank you for joining me for this event. I hope that you are enjoying it.
00:27:47
Speaker
and i just And I was just so taken with your thoughtful prayer and that you would pray for me. Thank you so much for that. That really made my day. I hope whoever else is watching or hearing this is having a fantastic, blessed day.
00:28:01
Speaker
And I hope that you are hungry enough to join me again for tomorrow. Daily reading out of our day by day kids Bible written by Karen Hedley. And I will see you next time.
