Today's we will finish reading Paul's second letter to the 1 Thessalonians with Chapter 3. We will also complete Chapter 18 of Acts by reading vs 12-28 and Chapter 19, 1-22.

Today we will read about Paul's encouragement from God to continue speaking boldly because no one would hurt him and then see how God protected Paul, just like He said He would, when the local Roman ruler did not hear arguments against Paul when the worship house leaders took Paul and accused him of teaching against God. We will read about Paul's journeys and the many people who became followers of Jesus, as well as read about a Jewish man names Apollos, who being very educated in the scriptures, was able to effectively explain the scriptures to many people and show how Jesus was, in fact, the Messiah.

In our discussion for daily application we will be encouraged to be like Apollos- be educated in the scriptures so that we are also able to effectively explain to others how Jesus is, in fact, the Messiah that God told us He would bring!

Welcoming Arlene & Divine Connections

00:00:40
Speaker
I would like to extend an extra special warm welcome today to Arlene. Arlene is someone that I got to spend time with at work today, and I was just amazed that God brought us together today.
00:00:54
Speaker
You know, I had been feeling it for some time, and and God had been placing us next to one another, and and i just, i wasn't getting the memo. And then today we finally, we've talked, but today, ah God finally opened up our mouths together and ah where we realized that um we both have, ah we share faith in our God and in Jesus. And it was just wonderful.
00:01:23
Speaker
So Arlene, if you are joining me for this event and you hear this message, thank you so much for your time that you spent together with me. It was absolutely amazing how God orchestrated our time together.
00:01:36
Speaker
And thank you for joining us for our daily reading. We are spreading the word about reading God's word and I am always so excited to see how God is placing people in my day.
00:01:49
Speaker
And so I share this with you, my listeners or my viewers, because God does the same thing in your lives. Who is God placing in your life that you didn't even realize he was doing so, so that you could talk to them about God's word and be a source of encouragement to them.
00:02:07
Speaker
And so that you could realize that you have ah you share common unity in the spirit. I love having that recognition when we recognize and realize that we are one in God's spirit with somebody else.
00:02:23
Speaker
It's just so awesome. I feel just so much more connected with people when I realize that that is the case. Well, thank you very much for following along with our event.

Bible Reading: Acts and Thessalonians

00:02:35
Speaker
Today we are going to be picking up with the rest of chapter 18 in Acts, chapter 19 in Acts, and the last chapter of the letter to the Thessalonians, ah the second letter to the Thessalonians, chapter 3.
00:02:53
Speaker
So it sounds like a lot, but it's really just, ah you know, our story's in chronological order, and that's the ah sections that we will be covering today in our reading.
00:03:06
Speaker
So today would like for you to keep your ears open for how we should live and what good it does to know the Word of God.
00:03:18
Speaker
We are spending time learning God's big story for us this year. We have been reading the entire Bible, and we understand God's Word. We have seen the prophecies that were given about Jesus.
00:03:33
Speaker
We have read them in the Psalms. We read them way back in the beginning. We read them in the prophets, and then we saw Jesus express explaining different things to us.
00:03:45
Speaker
Even on the cross, Jesus was giving us explanation ah and citing where he was fulfilling the prophecies, such as Psalm 22, when he said, ah my Lord, why my lord ah my God, why have you forsaken me?
00:04:03
Speaker
That was evoking Psalm 22. And it was just amazing. So when we understand God's word, let's watch for what we can do with it today shall we so let's head into the second book of thessalonians the third chapter so as we left off yesterday paul has been traveling and so he is in antioch at this time and so he is completing his letter to the thessalonians here
00:04:44
Speaker
As Paul gets towards the end of his letter, he says to pray for them. Pray that God's message will go out fast. And pray that others will think that it's important like you did.
00:04:57
Speaker
And pray that God will save us from sinful, mean people. Not everybody believes, but God keeps his promises.
00:05:10
Speaker
Our Big Bible says that not everyone is trustworthy, but God is trustworthy. And he will make your faith stronger. He will keep you safe from Satan.
00:05:24
Speaker
And we are sure that you will keep doing what God wants. We are sure that he will lead you into his love. And you will stay with him in hard times.
00:05:38
Speaker
I'm going to insert verse five here. It says, may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Messiah.
00:05:51
Speaker
That's how it says it in our big Bible. I really liked that. So I wanted to read that specifically. Okay. Okay.

Paul's Teachings on Work and Faith

00:06:01
Speaker
Paul goes on to say,
00:06:04
Speaker
away from god's people who are lazy we not lazy when we were with you we paid for the we eight hard day and night and want to be any trouble to you and you yourselves know that you ought to imitate us been all right for you to help us but we to show you how to live we are but ourselves
00:06:34
Speaker
as an example for you to imitate. And we told you this rule. If a person won't work, then he should not eat.
00:06:47
Speaker
And we have heard that some of you are being lazy. You are not busy. Instead, you are busy bodies. You just think about what other people should be doing.
00:07:00
Speaker
Stop this and work for what you eat. Some of you are good followers of Jesus, so don't get tired of doing what is right.
00:07:13
Speaker
God is the God of shalom. I pray that he will always give you shalom at all times, in every way. The Lord be with you all.
00:07:28
Speaker
I, Paul, am writing this part with my own hand. This is the way I write, so you can always tell when you are getting a letter from me.

Challenges in Corinth and Ephesus

00:07:39
Speaker
From Paul, Silas, and Timothy.
00:07:47
Speaker
Now the Jews came against Paul, as we pick up in chapter 18. And I'm going to give us a little bit of remembrance as to what we read before this part of chapter 18
00:08:01
Speaker
God gave Paul a vision and he encouraged Paul not to give up, but to keep teaching the people who were there. And he encouraged Paul to speak boldly because he said that he had many people who were for him there in Antioch.
00:08:24
Speaker
I think I gave a pretty good paraphrasing of that. too The Lord said to Paul through a vision in the night in verse 9 of chapter 18, Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not be silent, for I am with you, and no one shall attack you to harm you.
00:08:44
Speaker
Many people in this city are for me. So this was encouragement to Paul as he stayed. And you might remember that it says that he stayed there for a year and a half.
00:08:58
Speaker
So this is still taking place within that year and a half that he wrote the letter to the Thessalonians. And now we're back to Paul and what's going on with him while he is still there for that year and a half.
00:09:11
Speaker
Now the Jews came against Paul and they brought him to Galio. Galio was the ruler in Corinth. Now the Jewish people spoke against Paul.
00:09:23
Speaker
This man teaches people to worship God in wrong ways. Now Paul was just about to talk, but Galio spoke instead. And this is what he said.
00:09:36
Speaker
would listen to you Jewish people if this were about some crime, but it's just about your words and names and laws. So take care of it yourself. And I won't judge things like this.
00:09:51
Speaker
And then Galileo threw them all out of the building. So we see here that God protected Paul just as he said that he would.
00:10:03
Speaker
Then the Jewish people beat the ruler of the town's worship house, the ruler of the synagogue. They beat him right in front of that judge's building.
00:10:14
Speaker
But Galileo did not seem to care at all. Now Paul stayed for a long time in Corinth, and then he and Aquila and Priscilla traveled to Syria.
00:10:28
Speaker
And when they were at Centuria, Paul had his hair cut off because he was keeping a Nazarite bow.
00:10:39
Speaker
Now Akela and Priscilla and Paul traveled to Ephesus. And when Paul went into the town's worship house at Ephesus, there he talked to the Jews.
00:10:52
Speaker
And they asked him to stay and talk some more, but he wouldn't. He said, will come back if God wants me to. Then Paul left Akela and Priscilla in Ephesus and he sailed on.
00:11:06
Speaker
And he ended his trip back in Antioch. Now sometime later, Paul traveled again and he went from town to town and he was cheering up Jesus' followers wherever he went.
00:11:19
Speaker
Now while Paul was traveling, there was a man named Apollos who went to Ephesus and he was Jewish. He was very smart.
00:11:30
Speaker
He knew God's word well. And Apollos told people about Jesus. But he only knew about baptizing like John did.
00:11:43
Speaker
Now, Apollos was talking in the town's worship house, and Aquila and Priscilla heard him. And they asked him to come home with them. And they taught him more about Jesus. Now, I want to talk a little bit about Apollos there and give us a little bit of a break.
00:12:01
Speaker
Because this was this was teaching by the Holy Spirit. This was absolutely amazing. So as Paul was talking to, as, ah as Apollos was traveling, he had gone into,
00:12:21
Speaker
um Ephesus. And it says in our big Bible that he was a learned man who was well versed in the scriptures and he had been instructed in the way of the Lord.
00:12:34
Speaker
And with a fervent spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the facts about Jesus while only having been acquainted with the immersion, the baptism of John.
00:12:48
Speaker
So he was accurately teaching about Jesus, despite the fact that he did not know everything about him because he hadn't heard everything yet.
00:13:00
Speaker
And he began speaking out boldly in the synagogue. And then when Priscilla and Nikila heard him, they took him aside and explained the way of God more accurately.
00:13:14
Speaker
thought that was wonderful.
00:13:19
Speaker
So now when Apollos was in Corinth, Paul went to Ephesus and he met 12 there. Oh, I skipped a line. Sorry about that. So Apollos wanted to go to Corinth and Jesus' followers said that that was a good idea. And they even wrote letters to Jesus' followers in Corinth.
00:13:39
Speaker
And the letter said that people should welcome Apollos. And then when Apollos got to Corinth, he helped Jesus' followers a lot. He was very good at talking with people.
00:13:52
Speaker
And he used God's word. He showed that Jesus could save people.
00:14:00
Speaker
Our big Bible puts it this way. When Apollos went to, let's see, Corinth, upon his arrival, he greatly helped those who by grace had believed.
00:14:16
Speaker
For he powerfully refuted the Jewish people in public, demonstrating through the scriptures, that Messiah was Yeshua.
00:14:28
Speaker
Did you catch what we were looking for today?
00:14:33
Speaker
Now, when Paul was there in Corinth and he met Apollos, he also met 12 other men there and they had been learning about Jesus.

Ephesus Miracles and Misuse of Jesus' Name

00:14:43
Speaker
And Paul asked these 12 men, did you get the Holy Spirit when you believed?
00:14:49
Speaker
And they said, no, we didn't even know there was a Holy Spirit. Well, then what were you immersed in? How were you baptized? Asked Paul.
00:15:01
Speaker
And they answered, We were baptized because of what John said, they answered. And so Paul explained to them that John's baptizing was for saying that you're sorry for your sins.
00:15:15
Speaker
But then John told people to believe in Jesus. So the men were baptized in Jesus' name. And then Paul laid his hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
00:15:29
Speaker
And at once they began talking in different languages, and they began prophesying, which is to tell about God's plans.
00:15:39
Speaker
Then Paul went into the town's worship house, and he taught there for three months. He told people about God's kingdom. Now some people would not believe, and they said bad things about Jesus' followers.
00:15:55
Speaker
So Paul left the town's worship house. Paul and Jesus' followers talked every day. They met in a large hall, and it was a special place for speaking.
00:16:09
Speaker
They met there for two years, and all the Jews and Greeks around there heard God's word.
00:16:18
Speaker
Now, God did surprising wonders through Paul. And people would get clothes, cloths that Paul had touched, and they would take them to sick people, and the sick people would get well.
00:16:32
Speaker
And bad spirits would leave people. Now, it happened that there were also some Jewish people who tried to get bad spirits out of people. And they were trying to use Jesus' name to do it.
00:16:45
Speaker
They would say, Jesus' name, the one Paul teaches about, come out. Now, one of the Jewish leaders had seven sons.
00:16:57
Speaker
And all of them tried to get bad spirits out of people. But one day, bad spirit talked back to them. This is what that bad spirit said when they tried to cast him out by saying, in the name of Jesus, whom Paul teaches about.
00:17:18
Speaker
The spirit said, I know Jesus. I know Paul. But who are you? and then the man with the bad spirit jumped on those seven brothers.
00:17:33
Speaker
And he was stronger than all of them. And he pulled their clothes off. and he beat them up. The seven sons ran out of the house with no clothes on and they were bleeding.
00:17:47
Speaker
And the people in Ephesus heard about this. Jewish and Greek people all heard about it and it made them very scared. And they wondered about Jesus's name.
00:18:01
Speaker
Lots of believers came and told what they had done wrong, confessing their sins. And many of them had done magic by the power of bad spirits. And so they brought their magic books and they burned them.
00:18:16
Speaker
They added up how much the books had cost and it was about 50,000 pieces of silver.
00:18:25
Speaker
God's word went out all over the place and its power grew. Then Paul made plans to go to Jerusalem.
00:18:37
Speaker
After that, I need to go to Rome, he said. Now Paul had two helpers named Timothy and Erastus. He sent them on to Macedonia and Paul stayed in Asia a little longer.
00:18:54
Speaker
that is the end of our long reading today.
00:18:59
Speaker
That was a lot of information, wasn't it?
00:19:04
Speaker
Let's look at the beginning of our story. In the beginning of the story that we started today. we were finishing with the letter that Paul had written to the Thessalonians.
00:19:17
Speaker
And he had asked for the people there in Thessalonica to pray for Paul and for the believers.

The Power of Prayer and God's Faithfulness

00:19:25
Speaker
Do you remember what he asked them to pray?
00:19:30
Speaker
He said, pray that God's message will go out fast and pray that others will think that it is important, like you did, and pray that God will save us from sinful, mean people.
00:19:45
Speaker
Not everybody believes in God, and not everyone is trustworthy, but God is trustworthy.
00:19:54
Speaker
The people, of course, would have prayed for Paul and the other believers, and they would have honored that request for prayer. And look what happened.
00:20:04
Speaker
God is so trustworthy. He granted their request. He made his word go out and grow. And many people thought that it was important, just like the Thessalonians did.
00:20:21
Speaker
So we see that in today's reading. And we see that even with Apollos. And we see that with the way that he was familiar with the scriptures.
00:20:33
Speaker
And God used the Holy Spirit to teach him and to connect him with Paul and the other believers. It looks like Aquila and Priscilla. So that they could make sure he understood everything about Jesus.
00:20:49
Speaker
And what's amazing is that the Holy Spirit had been teaching Apollos and he was using his knowledge of the scriptures because he was a learned man, it says. He was very smart and he was going into the synagogue and he was teaching them about how Jesus was the Messiah by the scriptures.
00:21:12
Speaker
So that is what we need to be sure that we are prepared to do, is that we learn God's word, that we understand God's word, so that we are able to explain to people thoroughly.
00:21:27
Speaker
why Jesus is indeed the Messiah. And that's why we spend so much time when we come to prophecy fulfillment about Jesus, that we talk about where that was located in the Bible, because we want to make sure that we have a great understanding of the word.
00:21:47
Speaker
We want to spread the word about reading God's word, not just to read it, but to have understanding of it so that we can help further God's kingdom by being able to explain to people why Jesus is the Messiah.
00:22:04
Speaker
Another way that we put this is to give a reason for the hope that is in us. And that hope that we have is in Jesus. because he has saved us.
00:22:15
Speaker
And so we know that we will be joining with him when he returns or ah if we get there before he returns. Isn't that amazing?
00:22:28
Speaker
So that's what we were looking for today in our examples ah for our daily application is to be encouraged, to be like Apollos today, to learn the word so that we may be useful in bringing other people and to know about Jesus and why he is the fulfillment of God's prophecy to bring us a Messiah so that we can be reconciled with God.
00:22:57
Speaker
We can be forgiven for all of our sins because Jesus paid for that atonement and has entered into the new covenant with us.
00:23:08
Speaker
So I hope that you are encouraged and that you feel like God has lit your light today and that you are definitely gaining a strong understanding of God's word this year so that you will be well equipped for the good works that God has planned for you.
00:23:24
Speaker
We have been talking this year about how God's word is so useful for teaching and correction. We understand how God wants us to live. We understand how we need to make God and Jesus the most important ones in our lives.
00:23:40
Speaker
We understand God's plan for our lives. Having faith and knowing that he ah knows the plans that he has for us. To give us plans for a hope and a future.
00:23:53
Speaker
And that he always is working good into everything, no matter how bad it looks, so that we can trust in him and know that he is trustworthy.
00:24:04
Speaker
And he definitely fulfilled his promises to us to bring us the Messiah so that we could be reconciled to him, so that God could place his spirit within us, so that we would be one with him the way Jesus and him are one in each other.
00:24:23
Speaker
And now we are also one in each other because we share that same spirit that God has placed in each one of us. Isn't that encouraging that we can explain that to people this year?
00:24:37
Speaker
i love that. So thank you so much for joining me again for today's October 28th daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.

Conclusion and Call to Action

00:24:49
Speaker
I hope that you are feeling encouraged to click that light button You know the one. The one that looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart. It looks like a share, subscribe, a follow.
00:25:00
Speaker
So that we can encourage others to check out the event, listen to God's word, and together we are spreading the word about reading God's word. Thank you for joining me today, and I hope you have a very blessed day, no matter what day you have gotten around to reading or or not reading, hearing or watching today's event.
00:25:21
Speaker
And I will be happy to join you again for tomorrow's daily reading. See you then.
