Today's reading will continue reading the letter Paul wrote to the Romans. It will include Chapter 11:1-5, 7-8, 11-12, 17-26, 28-29, 33-34, 36 and Chapter 12:1-2, 4-21.

Today we will read more about God's divine plan to bring the good news to the Gentile nations through the rejection of  Jesus by the Jewish people. Paul will give us a beautiful picture of unity, telling us how we are all grafted into God's olive tree and reassuring us that the Jewish people are going to be rejoined to the tree when they believe in Jesus.

Paul will also encourage us to work together as a united body, using the spiritual gifts we have each been given to do the good works God has called us do. As an added bonus, we win over sin by doing good!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about unity- unity with God because He has put His Spirit within us, unity as one olive tree with many branches, unity with each other in spirit because we all share God's Holy Spirit within us, unity in mind because we have the mind of Jesus, unity in body, as we are all different parts of the same body of believers. We will talk about God's ministry of reconciliation and how it actually goes much deeper than just reconciling believers to Himself. Jesus taught us that a house divided cannot stand. We are meant to be ONE WITH EACH OTHER and part of God's ministry of reconciliation is to reconcile believers to one another, too! God has done this for us with His Holy Spirit, but we need to actively seek unity between one another, remembering all the ways in which we are truly ONE with each other.

Commitment to Daily Reading

00:00:42
Speaker
If you are using your bookmarking commitment calendar, it's time to get that out because we are going to cross off our day because we're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:56
Speaker
I think when I have spoken to people and we talk about the different books in the Bible, and when I tell people that we're reading through the book of Romans or Ephesians or Colossians, or we we're haven't actually gotten to Colossians yet, but um like Thessalonians, we haven't gotten there yet either.

Paul's Teachings and the Book of Romans

00:01:15
Speaker
But what do they have in common is Paul. And every time I tell somebody that we are reading about but something that Paul has written, they always say, oh, I love Paul.
00:01:27
Speaker
He's my favorite. Paul has some amazing writings. And gotta say, I think he might be my favorite too. Besides Jesus, of course. I do, of course, always love Jesus' teachings.
00:01:40
Speaker
But I really love how Paul is able to connect the dots for us. He is helping us have the big picture. He really keeps us in check with what's going on.
00:01:52
Speaker
And I really love that about him. So today we are going to be picking up with the book of Romans and covering chapters 11 and 12. Now yesterday we talked a little bit about how and the Jewish people did not accept Jesus for the most part as their savior.
00:02:12
Speaker
And we spoke a little bit about how even that God is using for good. So Paul is going to tell us about some more of that today. And he's going to make sure that we are aware of the fact that we need to be careful and not think that simply because we are Gentile believers, or as we might say, Christians, we might think that we are better than the Jewish people.
00:02:38
Speaker
I have to say that I've actually been to a church where ah they taught, or at least it was it was um believed by one of the senior, at least one of the senior pastors, that the Jewish people were no longer considered God's chosen people.
00:02:54
Speaker
They had forfeited that right. And that is not biblical. So I just want to make sure that we do not think that. We are called in today's writing, as we have been many other days, to unity.
00:03:09
Speaker
Unity as one body. And Paul is going to explain to us how we are connected. We've talked about how we are connected through God's Spirit. And now we're going to be talking about how we are connected through in our family line, how we are grafted in as wild olive branches into the olive tree that is Judaism.
00:03:33
Speaker
We are also going to be covering, ah as I mentioned, unity in and just in the whole body itself. Paul is going to elaborate for the Roman believers a little bit of how we spoke about how ah everybody has their own spiritual gifts.
00:03:52
Speaker
So we're going to be touching on the area of spiritual gifts today and the fact that we are all one body with just many parts. And everybody needs to do their part as the part of the body.
00:04:09
Speaker
And then we will wrap it up with talking about how to win over sin. All right, well, here we go, starting in chapter 11. Now, these chapters are so rich that I really, really want to encourage you that after you have listened or watched today's reading, that I hope that you are hungry for more details and just really want to dig into ah the more mature version of the Bible, our Big Bible.
00:04:41
Speaker
Because although this gives us a great understanding of chapters 11 and 12, Paul is a fantastic, fantastic writer, and he is definitely speaking out of the spirit.
00:04:56
Speaker
And i' really want to encourage you to read all that he has to say in Romans chapters 11 and 12, because they are very educational.
00:05:07
Speaker
They are very meaty.

Unity and Spiritual Gifts in Romans

00:05:11
Speaker
So Paul has been posing questions to the Roman believers. And he starts off chapter 11 as saying, next question. Did God turn his people away?
00:05:25
Speaker
oh am Jewish myself. I came from the family line of Abraham. i am from the family group of Benjamin. I must say, I never really read that and understood that.
00:05:38
Speaker
ah Paul was from the family group of Benjamin. God did not turn his people away. He knew them long ago. God's words tell us about Elijah.
00:05:52
Speaker
He cried to God about the Jewish people. He said, Lord, they killed your prophets. They tore your altars down.
00:06:03
Speaker
i am the only prophet left and they are trying to kill me too. Now, what did God tell Elijah? Have you been around for a while? Did you remember reading what God told Elijah when Elijah was being persecuted like this and was very sad that all of God's prophets were being killed by the leaders?
00:06:29
Speaker
God told Elijah, I still have 7,000 Jewish people who belong to me. They have not bowed their knee to Baal.
00:06:39
Speaker
They do not worship idols.
00:06:44
Speaker
Paul says it's the same way now. There are a few people God has chosen, and he chose them by his kind love.
00:06:57
Speaker
Now the Jews tried so hard. They tried to see how to be right with God, but they missed it. Some of them didn't care about God anymore.
00:07:10
Speaker
Isaiah said, God gave them foggy minds. He gave them eyes that could not see. He gave them ears that could not hear.
00:07:22
Speaker
And they are like that even now.
00:07:28
Speaker
Next question, Paul says, did Jewish people fall too far away from God? and What do you think? What did we learn yesterday about the possibility of being able to be separated from God's love?
00:07:46
Speaker
Is it possible? That's right. It's not possible. Paul says, no, they have sinned. And then God planned that other people would be saved.
00:08:01
Speaker
And these are the people who are not Jewish. God planned that this would make his people want what others have. Remember we talked about that yesterday?
00:08:12
Speaker
I had read ahead a little bit, so I was just super excited to put it all together. So I gave a little bit of that away yesterday.
00:08:21
Speaker
So the Jews sinned, and that means that other people can get God's great riches. Look how God can even turn their sin into good.
00:08:34
Speaker
So what will it mean when the Jews turn to God? The riches will be even greater. i love how positive Paul is, don't you? The Jews are like branches on God's olive tree.
00:08:51
Speaker
They were broken off of the tree. Now you are like a wild olive tree branch, and you were put onto the plant where the old branch used to be.
00:09:04
Speaker
And now you have to get sap from the olive root. But do not brag about being better than the first branches. Think about this.
00:09:16
Speaker
You do not hold up the root. The root holds you up. This means that we cannot have the new covenant without also understanding the old covenant.
00:09:33
Speaker
you will say, well, branches were broken off so I could be put back on. That is true. But they were broken off because they did not believe.
00:09:44
Speaker
And you were put on because you do believe. So do not brag. Be careful. God broke off those first branches so he can break you off too so if you turn away from him.
00:09:59
Speaker
Now let's say the Jews believe and turn to God again. then God will put them back on his tree. God can do it.
00:10:10
Speaker
You were a wild olive branch and God put you on the tree. it's easy for him to put them back on because it's their own tree.
00:10:23
Speaker
I want you to know about this mystery and then you won't think that you are better than the Jews. Here's part of the reason why the Jews turned away from God. It was so other people could come into God's kingdom.
00:10:39
Speaker
Then Jews will be saved. God loves the Jews. He doesn't change his mind about who he chooses. How great God's riches are.
00:10:52
Speaker
help wise he is. How much he knows. We don't know how he chooses. We can't tell which way he will go.
00:11:04
Speaker
Isaiah said, Who knows what is in God's mind? Whoever told God what he should do? Everything comes from God.
00:11:17
Speaker
Everything lives through him. Everything belongs to him. And God will be the greatest forever.
00:11:29
Speaker
Yes. Amen.
00:11:33
Speaker
That's such an exciting chapter. We're moving on to chapter two now. And this, ah Karen Henley has entitled, Stick With Each Other.

Using Gifts to Overcome Sin

00:11:44
Speaker
This is what I call unity. We need to not forget that we are together. So we need to stick together. We are all branches of the same tree. We are all part of the same family.
00:11:58
Speaker
Paul says, so think about God's kind love and then give yourself to him. Be living gift.
00:12:09
Speaker
Be special and clean. Make God happy. This is the way that your spirit worships him. And you may remember that Jesus told us that God is spirit and he must be worshiped in spirit and in truth.
00:12:28
Speaker
So the way that we worship him in spirit is to be special, which is to be holy and clean. That means don't be like people of the world.
00:12:39
Speaker
Be changed. Be changed by letting God make your mind new again. Then you will know what God wants. And then you will know what is good.
00:12:53
Speaker
And then you will know what makes God happy. b and you will know what is right.
00:13:02
Speaker
Now every person has one body, and each body has many parts. And all of the parts do different things. And it's like this with Jesus too.
00:13:15
Speaker
There are many of us who follow Jesus, and together we are like a body. We belong together. But each of us is made to be different.
00:13:30
Speaker
God made some people good at telling his words to others. So they should tell God's words. Our big Bible calls this prophecy. They should do it by using the faith that God gives them.
00:13:46
Speaker
Now, God made some people good at helping. So they should help. God made some people good at teaching. So they should teach. And God made some people good at making others feel better.
00:14:02
Speaker
And so that is what they should do. God made some people good at giving to others. And so they should give a lot. God made some people good leaders.
00:14:16
Speaker
So they should lead people as well as they can. God made some people to be kind and loving. Our big Bible calls this merciful.
00:14:28
Speaker
And so they should gladly be kind and loving or merciful. And your love, it should be real.
00:14:40
Speaker
Hate sinful things. Hang on to good things. And stick with each other. Love each other like brothers and sisters.
00:14:52
Speaker
And treat other people as if they are better than you. and ah always be in a hurry to do what is right. See that your spirit keeps wanting to serve the Lord.
00:15:05
Speaker
And be happy because of the hope that you have. Wait in peace when you have troubles. Keep on praying. Share with God's people who need things and welcome people into your home.
00:15:24
Speaker
Pray for good things to happen to people and pray for people even if they treat you badly. Be happy with people who are happy and be sad with people who are sad.
00:15:38
Speaker
Live at peace, at shalom with each other. So don't be proud. Be happy to be with people who don't seem important.
00:15:49
Speaker
And don't think that you are the best.
00:15:54
Speaker
Make sure you do what is right. Live at shalom, at peace with everybody if you can. And don't try to get back at people when they do bad things to you.
00:16:08
Speaker
Let God do it. In God's word, the Lord says, It is my job to pay people back. I will take care of it. And God's word also has this otherwise saying, What if your enemy is hungry?
00:16:26
Speaker
Feed him. What if your enemy is thirsty? Give him a drink. Do good to your enemy because it's like putting fire on his head.
00:16:38
Speaker
Our Big Bible says that it when you do that, you will be heaping hot coals on his head. And so do not let sin control you. Instead, win over sin by doing good.
00:16:56
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today. There is so much good in our reading. Oh my gosh, it was awesome.
00:17:07
Speaker
I loved it. Win over sin by doing good. So as we've been talking about struggling internally with our flesh self or our body self, arguing with our spirit self, with the spirit wanting to do what is right, but the body wanting to do what it wants to do, Paul explains to us that we win over that.
00:17:31
Speaker
struggle by doing the things that God has made us to do. He has given each of us gifts. He's created us to be in a certain way.
00:17:43
Speaker
And I would call these our natural inclinations. We have natural inclinations to do different things like teaching others or to be leaders, to be helpful, to be giving, whatever it is that God has called you to do and to be.
00:18:03
Speaker
We overcome sin with good by doing and using exactly who God made us to be, to do the good works that God has set up for us to do in advance.
00:18:18
Speaker
Isn't that amazing how God's plan just comes together and how he gives us the tools that we need? he he gives us who we are. And then he just wants us to do it, to be who he made us to be.
00:18:33
Speaker
And it's not hard to be who we are. It can be hard to do to be who we are the right way though. And we're gonna use Paul as that example again.
00:18:44
Speaker
So if you are new, you may have missed this example, or maybe you just missed that day of reading. But Paul, he was very, very what we call zealous for God. He really truly thought that he was doing and serving God and doing him a favor.
00:19:01
Speaker
by seeking out the followers of Jesus, whom he believed were what we would call heretical or um committing heresy, that they were going against God's word.
00:19:15
Speaker
Because up to that point, it was always taught, and we still know that there is only one God. And Jesus comes along and tells us that he is the son of God.
00:19:25
Speaker
And then we saw all of these different arguments from the leaders saying, well, prove it. And Jesus said, i have been proving it. So once he had finally been, ah had died for our sins and then had risen again, Paul, however, was seeking out the people who were followers of Jesus.
00:19:47
Speaker
And he was trying to kill them all, put them in jail. He hurt them. He was treating them badly. And he was doing it because he thought that he was doing a service to God.
00:19:59
Speaker
He was using himself improperly. He was doing the wrong thing. God, however, in his graciousness and in his wisdom, he took Paul and Jesus blinded him and said that he would serve him. He said, Paul, why are you persecuting me?
00:20:20
Speaker
And Paul said, well, who are you? he said, I am Jesus. So Paul believed because he could see. Jesus showed him his glory and it blinded him.
00:20:36
Speaker
And then his sight was restored to him and he was taught the good news. And then his zealousness for God went forth properly as he now was teaching the good news.
00:20:53
Speaker
So we can do things the wrong way. And sometimes our bad behaviors are simply us being who we are, but do it using it the wrong way.

Identity Transformation and God's View

00:21:05
Speaker
So part of the way that we can learn how to be who we are the correct way is by asking God who he says we are. God told Paul he was an apostle.
00:21:19
Speaker
he was so He was now also a witness. A witness is someone who experiences things with God and then tells other people about it. So ah part of this, ah we can call it identity exchange. And there's actually a website about that.
00:21:35
Speaker
And it's called identityexchange.com. And that's where we take the negative things that we would want to call ourselves. like useless or um hurtful, angry, stubborn.
00:21:53
Speaker
And we can take things like stubborn and ask God, who do you say I am? And he will take that name and replace it with who he made you to be.
00:22:05
Speaker
He will give you the proper name. You are simply not using yourself properly. So things of behaviors like stubbornness can be good when they are used properly.
00:22:19
Speaker
Stubbornness, I would say, is actually faith, just misdirected. Stubborn means that you have a tendency to not want to change your mind about something, and you just want to do that thing no matter what anybody tells you.
00:22:36
Speaker
Well, that's a strong faith if I ever heard of one. So if you know someone who is stubborn, Maybe they just need to be redirected like we would do a younger child.
00:22:49
Speaker
And you know what? It's valid for adults too. We all need a little redirection here and there. We just don't think of it that way. We only think of it in terms of redirecting a child.
00:23:01
Speaker
And instead of just simply thinking of it as redirecting a child, we need to remember that we are God's children. And we are not as smart as we think we are. So we need to be redirected.
00:23:13
Speaker
And God does this. And he does this by renewing our mind, Paul tells us. He says, replaces God. make your mind new again god replaces our bad patterns, when he teaches us with his spirit how to be good and do the things that he has made us able to do, whether it is to be a leader.
00:23:41
Speaker
are we Are we a boss at work? Are we a strong leader? Well, then use that leadership that God has given you to help lead people to Jesus. There are there iss is always a way to use who you are to further God's kingdom.
00:23:58
Speaker
And when we do that, when we use who we are for good, that is how we win over sin.

Harmony Among Believers

00:24:09
Speaker
How do you like that connection?
00:24:13
Speaker
And we need to remember too that as we come ah across other people and we are to remember that we are all brothers and sisters together in one body. We're not better than other people.
00:24:26
Speaker
One gift is not better than another. We need all of the gifts. It's like an orchestra and with a band playing. We're not soloists.
00:24:37
Speaker
We're not an army of ones. We are part of God's army and we are a part of an orchestra. We are part of a body. And just as an orchestra can make beautiful symphonies with many different instruments, each one has to play in tune according to the notes that it is meant to play.
00:25:01
Speaker
And if you take out one of the instruments, then the music would be lacking. Instead, we are all making beautiful music together. And we are singing with God's Holy Spirit.
00:25:16
Speaker
And we are singing about the good news with that joy. hope you like that illustration. The Holy Spirit just told me about it. i didn't think I don't think of these things ahead of time.
00:25:27
Speaker
I always pray and ask the Holy Spirit to open my mouth to say what it is he wants to say today. And sometimes I'm always amazed. ah And that it's not me. I'm not bragging. It's definitely not me.
00:25:38
Speaker
I can't take any credit for these Lovely symbolisms, but I'm really pleased with that one from the Holy Spirit. He he creates beautiful imagery.
00:25:49
Speaker
And it's it's another way of doing a parable. A parable is a comparison ah between two things so that you can understand one by understanding another. And in English literature or English grammar, rather, we would call that um a metaphor or a simile.
00:26:06
Speaker
A simile uses like or as to compare ah one thing to another. And it's like that.
00:26:15
Speaker
There's another simile. And so our our spiritual gifts, in addition to being like the body, they are also like a symphony, an orchestra, where we each have different instruments to play.
00:26:27
Speaker
And we don't want to just hear the trumpet. Soloists can sound beautiful. There's nothing wrong with a solo play. But the whole body of Christ is not made up of a soloist.
00:26:40
Speaker
It's made up of so many beautiful instruments. We each bring our beautiful music to tell and teach and and to assist and work together in God's kingdom.
00:26:55
Speaker
So I hope that you are encouraged and feel at peace when you think about that. I know when I think about that, i it always, it it first of all, it always um brings me so much joy. And I hope that it brings you that joy too, ah because I love, God has really given me a heart for teaching unity, for bringing unity to his body.

Promoting Unity and Reconciliation

00:27:18
Speaker
I don't have a name for it. But I guess that would be the ministry of reconciliation, because that means to bring together two things that were separated. And I feel like the body is separated.
00:27:32
Speaker
And he. has really put it on my heart to help the body be reconciled to one another. In this ministry of reconciliation, we think of it as just being reconciled to God.
00:27:45
Speaker
But because we have God's Spirit, and because we are one in spirit, I feel like it's a big movement. that God is has put me as part of, and that's to bring unity to the body, reconciliation to God's body with all of our many believers, all of our parts.
00:28:08
Speaker
it it It's really important to me. I'm very passionate about it. that we be reconciled to one another, that we feel and know and see our our connectedness that we have with one another.
00:28:23
Speaker
So whenever we have a scripture reading for the day that deals with anything that that connects unity, i love it. And i really um want to encourage us to feel unified in the body because Jesus teaches us that a house divided against itself cannot stand.
00:28:43
Speaker
And so that is what our adversary wants us to do, is he wants us to be at odds with one another. And we can beat that. we can could We can beat sin and we can beat...
00:28:55
Speaker
division by remembering that we are actually one with one another through God's Holy Spirit. We are part of the same olive tree. We are grafted in there is always room for more branches.
00:29:10
Speaker
We need to remember that as we, as we pray and wait for the full ah reconciliation of God's Jewish people to be reconciled to the tree.
00:29:22
Speaker
so that we can all be part of the same giant tree of life that is our Lord and Savior. Jesus is our big tree of life.
00:29:34
Speaker
Not only and in in spirit, but in in eternal life, he is our in our family tree.
00:29:45
Speaker
He is our tree of life. Literally, he gives us eternal life with our spirit that we are connected together with. So I just, I love all of all of the ah fullness, the shalom that that brings us when we really ponder and and spend time meditating on that, on that important concept.
00:30:12
Speaker
Well, thank you for listening to me today. You can see that it it really matters a great deal to me, this subject of unity and drawing one another together. and And I am so thankful every day God brings people into my path.
00:30:27
Speaker
Even though I was technically off of work today, i got to speak with a lovely lady ah when I was on the phone with MetLife. And forgive me, I want to say your name is Albany.
00:30:40
Speaker
Something like Albany. from MetLife. So if i've spellt if I've said your name incorrectly and you are listening, I'm sorry about that. But I wanted to tell you that that's part of what I love is that God brings unity in my life all the time by connecting me with you, with other believers, to draw you together so that we can feel our unity together.
00:31:05
Speaker
i know we use this as a symbol of prayer, but this is us coming together, all of us, together in spirit and in body. love that.
00:31:18
Speaker
And Paul teaches us to let us be of one mind. So there we are three in one again. We are to be of one mind. We are already of one spirit. We are already of one body.
00:31:29
Speaker
Our body, our spirit, our Our spiritual body is also three in one. We spoke about that the other day, how we are in our mind.
00:31:41
Speaker
We are also three in one, like our heavenly father. He is father, son, and spirit. And we have our mind, our spirit, and our body. We are also three in one.
00:31:52
Speaker
And then there is further dimension. with this with the believing body, the believer's body, where we are one in spirit. We are one in body.
