In today's reading we will read Nehemiah Chapters 2-3. Today we will see God put the task of rebuilding Jerusalem's walls back up on Nehemiah's heart and provide for Nehemiah to be able to carry out the task that He has put on his heart!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about God's faithfulness to complete the good works he has prepared for us to do. If God puts something on our hearts to do then He will also provide for it to be done, as He did in Nehemiah's case. Just as God placed Nehemiah RIGHT WHERE HE WAS, so are WE placed to be in positions to DO what God puts on our hearts to do! It is my prayer that we will all be encouraged to be bold and strong for whatever task God sets for us to do, knowing that if God puts it on our hearts to do, He will DO IT!

August 5 Daily Reading- Read the Bible in 1 Year

In today's reading we will complete the Book of Ezra with Chapters 9 and 10, then begin the Book of Nehemiah with Chapter 1. Today we will read about the sin of intermarrying with women of the countries around them who worshipped other gods. We will see Ezra very dismayed at this sin because it wasn't just the people, it was the leaders who were at the forefront of it, providing bad example by disobeying God's laws. Ezra shows us the right thing to do in any sinful situation- he prompts the people to confess their sins and take action to correct their behavior, which they did! 

In our discussion for daily application we will look at the importance of confessing our sins and changing our behavior as well as being mindful of the fact that our own behavior can negatively (or positively!) affect those around us when they see us sinning or refraining from sinning. We are so fortunate that our God is such a loving, forgiving God who is faithful to forgive us of our sins when we confess them to Him. There is nothing that separate us from His love, which is in Jesus, but God does discipline us because He loves us. We are His children. He is our Heavenly Father and He does not want to see us stray even further into our sin. Let us be encouraged today to confess any sins we may be engaging in and correct our behavior, as we read today in Ezra, reassured by the fact that Jesus has paid the price for our sins and we can approach Him to repent. He is so faithful and loving. God will always receive us and forgive us.

In today's reading we will read in the Book of Ezra, Chapters 7 and 8:15-36. Today we will read about the King of Babylon sending a letter to Ezra telling him that he and all who want to return to Jerusalem may do so, as well as charging Ezra with teaching everyone in the land the laws of God, which were to be obeyed by the people in addition to the king's laws. We will read about God's provision to provide for the beautification of His temple by putting this on the heart of the king to provide for it. In today's reading Ezra gives testimony about God strengthening him to be bold and gather people to go with him as wells as testimony about God's faithfulness to answer their prayers for protection as the people with their families, animals and a great quantity of riches traveled to Jerusalem in safety.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about walking the walk and living out faith in God every day, through situations that God brings our way to teach us to rely on Him and be strong in our faithfulness to Him as well as the importance of being God's witnesses to His provision in our lives so that we may strengthen our brothers and sisters around us, whom God will place in our path, which are part of the good works He has prepared for us to do "for such a time as this." May we have understanding as we build upon the lessons that we are learning this year to walk with God every day and be who He created us to be and have a positive impact in the world around us. Amen.

In today's reading we will read the Book of Malachi. In this book God sends a message to His post exilic population because already they are starting to backslide by not making God the most important one in their lives.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of always bringing our best to God. Everything we have comes from God. It isn't okay to give God leftovers of things we don't want. We want to be sure that whatever we are doing we do for the glory of God and bring God our very best every day. God is faithful to us and loves us every single day. He shows us how to love. He shows us how to be faithful by being faithful to us. We cannot out give God. When we are faithful and bring our best to God He responds by giving us EVEN MORE! Let us be faithful to do the good works that God has prepared ahead of time for us to do. Let us be faithful to do our best in everything we do, for the glory of God. And finally, let us remember to faithful to one another, the way God is faithful to us. He is faithful to forgive us every day. Let us remember to forgive one another and keep our promises to one another and love one another the way God loves us.

In today's reading we will complete the Book of Esther with Chapters 7, 8, and 9. Today we will read about Esther asking King Xerxes to save her and her people, the Jews, from Haman's evil plan to kill them all. The king elevated Mordecai to second in command of his kingdom, executed Haman on the pole that he had set up for Mordecai, and instructed Mordecai to write a law that would satisfy Esther's request to save the Jews. With the new law the Jews were allowed to assemble and fight back to anyone who tried to kill them. After the appointed time that Haman had set up to kill the Jews Mordecai declared that all the people should set up a yearly holiday in remembrance of the event and how God had taken care of them. The holiday is called Purim, named for the Hebrew word for "lot" because Haman cast the lot to determine the day that the Jews should be killed. Throughout the Book of Esther we can see that Mordecai had a heart for God. Even when declaring a remembrance day for the Jews he showed his heart for God and all people by declaring that the yearly holiday should be celebrated by giving gifts to others, including the poor. The story concludes stating that Mordecai was well liked by the people because he worked to treat them right and spoke up for them.

In our discussion for daily application we look at Mordecai's example of looking out for other people- to treat them right and speak up for those who could protect themselves. These are things that God has been teaching us throughout the year. God wants us to stand up for people who cannot stand up for themselves. God wants us to care for children who have lost their parents. God wants us to look out for women who have lost their husbands. We, too, need to be sure that in today's "look out for number one" society that we are not being selfish but are looking out for other people, looking for opportunities to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. God places us in positions to be able to do these things so we need to be mindful of them and remember that like Esther (and Mordecai!) God has placed us where we are, in places and positions to be able to help other people for such a time as this.

August 1 Daily Reading- Read the Bible in 1 Year

In today's reading we will continue reading the Book of Esther, chapters 4-6. We will read about Mordecai informing Esther about the law that had been passed to kill all the Jews and asking her to intercede on their behalf. When Esther replies that she cannot do this because of the rule that no one may see the king without his invitation, Mordecai replies that God will save them another way, but who knows? Maybe she was elevated to being queen for such a time as this- to save their people. When the king cannot sleep the night before attending a dinner with Queen Esther and Haman he asks for the royal chronicles to be read to him, bringing to light the fact that no reward was ever given to Mordecai for informing the king about a plot to kill him.  We will see Haman's pride getting the best of him when the king asks him for advice about how to honor someone. Haman assumes it is HE who will be honored and instead he has to honor Mordecai with his lavish suggestion, thwarting his intent to ask the king to let him kill Mordecai on the gallows he has set up at his house.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about God's intimate involvement in our lives. God sets up good works for us to do and we are placed right where we are, every day for such a time as to be able to make an impact in God's Kingdom every day! We will also talk about Jesus' teaching of not elevating ourselves but allowing God and others to elevate us. Lastly, we will talk about not seeking reward for everything that we do, but allowing God, in His perfect timing, to decide our rewards for us, allowing us to build up treasure in heaven, where moth and rust don't destroy. Jesus taught us that if we make our good deeds known to others that we have received our full reward here on Earth, and that it is better to do our good deeds in secret, not allowing our left hand to know what our right hand is doing, so that our Father in Heaven may see our good deeds and reward us with treasure in heaven.

July 31 Daily Reading- Read the Bible in 1 Year

In today's reading we will begin the Book of Esther, written by Mordecai, her Uncle. We will cover the first three chapters. Today we will read about and contrast disobedience with obedience. The Jewish people in Persia would have trouble with a man named Haman, who was an Amalekite. The Amalekites were supposed to be wiped out by King Saul but he didn't obey God. The prophet Samuel ended up killing king Agag himself, but Saul left other Amalekites alive. His disobedience would have long lasting consequences. The Jews were still considered to be the enemy of the Amalekites and Mordecai would now seek to kill all of the Jews with a royal decree from King Xerxes. Queen Vashti was also disobedient to king Xerxes when he commanded her to present herself and she disobeyed, causing her to lose her position as queen and be replaced. Contrasting Saul's and queen Vashti's disobedience is Esther's and Mordecai's obedience- Mordecai is obedient to God and will not bow down to worship Haman. Esther is obedient to her uncle Mordecai, who raised her, as well as to the man who was looking over her at the palace before she went to see King Xerxes and brought with her only what he advised her to bring. 

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of obedience to God and to those God places over us. Children are to obey their parents, we are to obey the leaders God places over us, wives are to obey their husbands, Jesus is the head of the church, we see that Jesus obeyed God, even to death in order to pay the price for our sins. Obedience is very important. God values obedience over sacrifice, as He tells us in 1 Samuel 15:22. The disobedience of king Saul had negative consequences hundreds of years later. Jesus' obedience has everlasting benefits! We never know how far our disobedience or obedience can reach. It is very important that we are careful to sow seeds of obedience. What we sow will  be reaped, even a long time from now!

In today's reading we will read complete the reading of the Book of Zechariah with Chapters 11-14. Today we will read prophesy about the coming Messiah, the rejection of the Messiah by the Israelite people, the 30 pieces of silver paid to Judas when he betrayed Jesus and the return of the money to the temple, used to buy the Potter's Field,  the scattering of the disciples when Jesus would be arrested, the blood of the Messiah cleansing sin from our hearts,  the wounds that Thomas would ask to see in Jesus' hands, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the deception of the antichrist who will hurt many people, the eventual belief in Jesus as the Messiah by the Israelite people and their regret about having not believed in Him, the return of Jesus (the day which only God knows), the eventual celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles by all nations and the consequence for not doing so, and the new Jerusalem when God will be the source of all light in the world, both day and night! WOW! WOW! WOW! 

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about God knowing the plans He has for us. Plans for hope and a future. God is in control of everything! God gave us these prophesies so that those who have ears to hear and eyes to see will know and understand the plans He has for us. God set these events in motion thousands of years ago. Some of the prophecies have already been fulfilled and some are yet to be fulfilled. We can trust in God's appointed times and know that when they arrive God will faithfully fulfill them as He always has. God can be trusted! He knows the plans He has for us: plans for a future and hope! God is still on the winning side! God has defeated sin; Jesus has defeated death! Whoever believes in Jesus will have springs of living water flowing from them when they receive the Holy Spirit and become One with the Living God, who is Three in One and also in us! Hallelujah! (Praise God!)

In today's reading we will read Zechariah Chapters 9:9-17, and 10:4-12. We will prophesy concerning the Messiah- that He will come from the tribe of Judah, that He is right. That He saves us. He is kind and good. He will ride on a colt. He will bring peace to the nations, over all the earth! God's promise of salvation will set us FREE! In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the fact that only Jesus fulfilled all of the prophesies given to us in the Old Covenant concerning the Messiah. Jesus saves us. What does He save us from? The consequence of sin- spiritual death, separation from God forever. Why did God do this? He tells us He did this because He cares for us! God loves us! God's love for us never ends! He loves us so much that He sent His Son to be the Savior of the whole world! Let us be witnesses of God's love for us and spread the word about God's Word- Jesus is our salvation! He is The Way, The Truth, and The Life! Jesus saves us!

In today's reading we will read Psalm 126, Psalm 128, Psalm 147, and Psalm 149:1-5, 9. In today's Psalms we will read about praising God for bringing them back to Jerusalem. We will see the people grateful for God's riches- things like wives who are fruitful, many children, living to see one's grandchildren, rather than the amassing of material wealth achieved by cheating and stealing from others.  We will see the restoration of God's people's hearts, not just their physical restoration to Jerusalem,  with a desire to look for and obey God's ways, blessing one another and praying for one another, singing and dancing with joy to praise God for his love that never ends. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how we can all identify with these feelings of restoration when God calls us back to Him and restores our relationship with Him after we have gone astray, like sheep. God's love is so warm and comforting and it is so reassuring to know that even though we have wandered, God loves us and wants to gather us to Him the way He gathered His people back from exile. Let us praise God for his lovingkindness that never ends!
