Today's reading will continue reading the letter Paul wrote to the Romans. It will include Chapter 13:1,3-14 and Chapter 14:1-14, 17-19, and 22-23.

Today Paul will tell us about why we need to choose to do what is right- not because we are are afraid of getting in trouble for doing what is wrong, but because doing what is right is what God wants us to do and we will feel better when we do what is right. Paul let's us in on a helpful hint: that love helps us obey God's laws.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about a wonderful gift that God has given us- the gift of free will. God does not force us to do what is right. He allows us to choose. As we grow spiritually we need to make more decisions based on our understanding of what is right and wrong. Paul previously taught us about the battle that is going on inside us between God's Spirit and our body to do what is right. As we grow in our understanding of knowing God and knowing what He wants us to do we need to use our free will to choose to do what is right because it is the right thing to do, not because we feel we have to, like we did when we were less spiritually mature. (notice how these decisions have little to do with physical maturity (our age), but with spiritual maturity.)

Today's Reading from Romans

00:02:28
Speaker
So with that said, if you are following along on your bookmarking commitment calendar, it's time to get that sticker out.
00:02:36
Speaker
It's time to get your crayon, your marker, whatever you're using to cross off your days, because we're about to hear the Bible again today.
00:02:46
Speaker
We are presently reading in the book of Romans. This is a letter that Paul wrote to the community of believers and Jewish people also actually in Rome.
00:03:00
Speaker
And this takes place in about the year 56-57, winter ah after a d
00:03:10
Speaker
So we are going to be reading in chapters 13 and 14 today. And today we're going to be looking at why we do what is right.
00:03:24
Speaker
Why do we do it? There could be lots of reasons why we do what is right. We have lots of different motivations. But Paul is going to give us one today. And we're going to look at that as our whole big picture as Paul talks about doing right.
00:03:44
Speaker
So starting in chapter 13, Paul says, People should obey the leaders of their country. Leaders were put in charge by God.
00:03:56
Speaker
People who obey don't have to be a afraid. eight Leaders make sure that people obey the rules. But people who do wrong should be afraid.
00:04:09
Speaker
You don't want to be afraid of people in charge. So do what is right. Then they will tell you that you have done a good job.

Love Fulfills God's Rules

00:04:19
Speaker
And they are God's servants.
00:04:22
Speaker
They are supposed to do good for you. So obey the people in charge. And do it not just because you will get in trouble if you don't.
00:04:33
Speaker
Do it because this is what God wants. And you will feel better when you do what is right.
00:04:43
Speaker
And that's why people pay taxes, Paul tells us. It's because the people in charge are God's servants. And they make sure that everyone obeys the rules.
00:04:55
Speaker
So give them what you are supposed to give them. Are you supposed to pay them your taxes? Then pay them. Are you supposed to treat them as important people?
00:05:07
Speaker
Then treat them as important people. Pay back anything you owe to someone, but you will always owe people your love.
00:05:19
Speaker
And if you love people, then you have done what God wants. Remember God's rules? Rules such as have sex only with your wife or husband, or don't kill, or don't steal.
00:05:38
Speaker
there are other rules too. But one rule takes care of all the other ones. That rule says, love your neighbor the same way that you love yourself.
00:05:53
Speaker
Love doesn't hurt people. Love helps you obey God's laws.

Acceptance and Non-Judgment

00:06:02
Speaker
Now you need to understand what is happening now. It's time to wake up. It's time to watch. The time when we will be saved is near.
00:06:13
Speaker
And it's closer than it was when we first believed. It's as if the night is almost over. The day when we will be saved is almost here.
00:06:26
Speaker
So let's stop doing things that are bad. Bad people try to hide what is bad. But let's do what is right. We don't mind people seeing what is right.
00:06:40
Speaker
So let's not have wild parties. Let's not get drunk. Let's not have sex with anyone but the person we marry. And let's not work to get things that belong to other people.
00:06:56
Speaker
Instead, let's get close to Jesus. Let's not think about things that might make us sin.
00:07:08
Speaker
Now, some people don't have much faith, but don't judge them. Some people believe that they can eat everything and other people only eat vegetables.
00:07:20
Speaker
The person who eats everything should not think that people who don't are silly. And the person who does not eat everything should not blame people who do.
00:07:32
Speaker
They belong to God too. So how can you judge a follower of God? Because God will say if his follower is standing close to him.
00:07:43
Speaker
And God will say if the person has fallen away from him. But we know that the person will stand close because God can help him do it. Now some people think that one day is more important than another.
00:07:59
Speaker
And other people think that every day is alike. And both ways are fine. Each person needs to choose what he thinks is right.
00:08:11
Speaker
Somebody thinks one day is more special. So he thanks God for it. Somebody eats meat. And he thanks God for that. And somebody does not eat meat.
00:08:23
Speaker
And he thanks God too. And nobody lives by himself. Nobody dies by himself. If we live, we live for God.
00:08:36
Speaker
And if we die, we die for God. Both ways, we belong to God. And that is why Jesus died.
00:08:48
Speaker
That's why he came back to life again. He did it so that he could be the Lord. He is Lord of people who die and of people who live.

God's Ultimate Judgment

00:09:00
Speaker
So why do you judge others? Why do you treat them like they are not important? All of us will stand in front of God someday, he will judge all of us.
00:09:14
Speaker
Isaiah wrote down these words from God. You can be sure that everyone will bow down in front of me. Every mouth will tell that I am God.
00:09:29
Speaker
And then each person will have to tell God what he did. and he will have to tell why he did it. So let's stop blaming each other. don't make people do things that they think are wrong.
00:09:44
Speaker
I'm sure it's all right to eat any kind of food, but some people think it's a sin to eat some foods. So for them, those foods are not good to eat.
00:09:57
Speaker
Now God's kingdom is not made of eating and drinking. It's made of what is right. It is made of shalom, of peace.
00:10:09
Speaker
It's made of joy in God's Holy Spirit. And God is happy with people who serve Jesus this way. Other people are happy with them too.
00:10:22
Speaker
So let's try to do things that bring peace. Let's do things that are good for everybody. And be careful of the things you say yes to.
00:10:34
Speaker
Make sure that they are not things that you can be blamed for. And good things will come if you do what is right. But if you think that something is wrong, don't do it.
00:10:48
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:10:53
Speaker
Do you love how easy this reading is for us to understand God's word? I love it. Paul is is a wonderful teacher.
00:11:04
Speaker
And sometimes his readings, his writings can be ah very mature. They can be complicated to understand the way he explains things at times. Not always, but they can be complicated to newer believers or to people

Right Actions and Spiritual Maturity

00:11:20
Speaker
who are younger.
00:11:21
Speaker
and so I love this reading because this helps everybody understand without judging.
00:11:30
Speaker
So did you pick up on why we are supposed to do what is right? Why we are supposed to obey? Paul tells us today not to just obey because we'll get in trouble if we don't.
00:11:46
Speaker
Now he's speaking specifically about obeying our leaders. But you know what? All of these concepts can be applied elsewhere. So when somebody, whoever it is, tells us to do something, whether it's God, the Holy Spirit, Jesus, or boss, or a mom, a dad, a teacher,
00:12:09
Speaker
ah a mayor, a president, whoever is telling us what to do, we need to obey them. Why? Because we'll get in trouble if we don't.
00:12:22
Speaker
That's not a good reason. Now, when we are younger, We think and we act like we are younger. And so we will do things because we don't have the ability yet to make our own good decisions, to know everything that is right and wrong.
00:12:39
Speaker
So we have people like moms and dads and teachers and leaders and bosses to teach us how to do things, how we are expected to do them. We call that the right way, or at least how they think it is the right way.
00:12:54
Speaker
And so we can't know anything when we are born. My dad always told me, nobody knows anything when they are born. We all have to learn. And so teachers, whether it's a godly teacher, like a pastor or um your Sunday school teacher, or whether it's your parent or regular teacher at school, they teach us how to do what is right.
00:13:22
Speaker
And then we can be motivated to do what is right because we don't want to get in trouble for doing it wrong. But that's what we do when we are younger. When we decide, oh, I'll just, I'll do it anyways.
00:13:35
Speaker
And if nobody sees me, I won't get in trouble. I had an older brother and he used to tell me, it's only illegal if you get caught.
00:13:47
Speaker
Well, that's not true. if you may If you do something that is against the law, it's still against the law whether you got caught or not.
00:13:58
Speaker
If your mom or your dad or your teacher or anybody tells you, don't do that, and then you do it anyway when they're not looking, you are still sinning.
00:14:09
Speaker
Just because you didn't see, you didn't get caught by them, doesn't mean that God didn't see us do it. God sees everything. And so we are supposed to do and obey the things that are right out of an understanding that we are supposed to do what is right.
00:14:29
Speaker
Because that is what God wants us to do. We are learning how to do the right thing, not because we have to, but because we choose to.
00:14:40
Speaker
And Paul tells us here today that we will feel better if we do the right thing. God has given us a wonderful gift. And guess what? I'm not talking about the gift of Jesus' salvation for us.
00:14:57
Speaker
I'm talking about the gift of free will. God told Adam and Eve what was right and what was wrong when they were in the garden. And they had the choice to obey.
00:15:10
Speaker
He did not make it impossible for them to disobey. He told them what the rules were. and then he allowed them to be. They had to make their own choices.
00:15:23
Speaker
Their choices brought them consequences and they had to pay for those consequences with death. God told them that if you do this, if you eat of this particular fruit on the tree of knowledge of good and evil, he said, then you will surely die.
00:15:45
Speaker
But they had their free choice. God could have not placed that tree there. He could have prohibited them. He could have put the the the sword that was flam the flaming sword that he put in front of the Garden of Eden afterwards to keep them out of the garden.
00:16:05
Speaker
He could have put that in front of the tree. But he did not. He told them what not to do, and then he allowed them the choice to obey or disobey.
00:16:17
Speaker
God wants us to choose to obey because it's the right thing to do. And when we are younger, we may not understand that we are we are supposed to learn to do the right thing because it's the right thing to do.
00:16:33
Speaker
And you know what? Not even all grownups do it too. It's not even just about kids. We are still learning to do what is right and to do it not because we are afraid of punishment for it, but because we need to understand that it's the right thing to choose to do.
00:16:55
Speaker
That's what obeying God is about. That's what loving people is about. We have directions. We have Jesus that we've been reading about who told us to love one another, to forgive one another.
00:17:10
Speaker
So he is telling us the right things to do. We have this beautiful book, the Bible, that is written to teach us how to do the right things, what is right and what is wrong.
00:17:25
Speaker
And we don't always make the right choices, but we need to work on our motivation for why we are choosing to do them. God gives us free will.
00:17:36
Speaker
And for a while, we kind of, in our immaturity, we are scared. And we say, oh, I will do the right thing because I don't want God to punish me.
00:17:48
Speaker
and And even sometimes I will do that. I'm not perfect. Sometimes I really want to do something that I want to do. and And I'm afraid sometimes when I disobey and I know I have disobeyed and I say, oh, I hope God doesn't punish me for this.
00:18:05
Speaker
And sometimes like there is consequence for that. But we have to make the right choices as we go through life to become increasingly more responsible in our decision making.

Understanding Free Will

00:18:19
Speaker
to make the right choices because they are the right thing to do, not because we have to. God doesn't stand here all day, every day with his pen saying, when you do this, I'm going to mark it down and and there's going to be a consequence for that.
00:18:39
Speaker
God gave us free will. He doesn't want us to
00:18:45
Speaker
have to do things. He tells us what the right thing to do is, but we get to make those right and wrong decisions. And Isaiah said it today, read about it, that Paul tells us, that i that God tells us that, let's see, you can be sure that everyone will bow down in front of me and every mouth will tell that I am God.
00:19:13
Speaker
Someday all of us will have to stand before God and be judged. That's why his gift of salvation is a choice. It is free.
00:19:25
Speaker
We have to choose to acknowledge Jesus as Lord. We have to still make choosing decisions to make the right choices to then allow him to transform our mind so that we can do the right things and we will never be perfect.
00:19:42
Speaker
Thank goodness for grace. I'm so thankful that we have God's grace and his forgiveness that when we ask him to forgive us, he always is faithful. And that's why he tells us we also need to forgive.
00:19:56
Speaker
He says that as you are as you forgive others, that is how he forgives us. That the same measure we use is the measure that will be used against us.
00:20:07
Speaker
And that's why Paul also is telling us today not to judge other people. So there's lots of things that we can go on and on about what we should not do. But Paul tells us today that the one rule that covers all of them is to love everybody.
00:20:24
Speaker
To love one another. He says, love your neighbor the same way you love yourself. Love does not hurt people and love helps you obey God's rules.
00:20:41
Speaker
So I hope that as you grow in your spiritual maturity, not just in your age, but in your spiritual maturity, that you will think about the things when you make choices.
00:20:55
Speaker
And that you will have awareness that when we make our decisions to do the right thing, it's not supposed to be out of a sense of fear of consequence.
00:21:07
Speaker
It is supposed to be because this is what we know God wants us to do. That's that fight between the spirit and the flesh. And we need to remember that when we do choose to do the right thing, we will feel good about it.
00:21:24
Speaker
versus not feeling good about it.
00:21:29
Speaker
Well, hope that you feel that God has lit your light today. And I hope that you have enjoyed our daily reading and our daily application today. I know I did. ah it's that That was a big one. I thought that was really big.
00:21:42
Speaker
Why we choose to do the right things. Not just about obeying leaders and teachers, but in everything we do. So I hope that you feel that this was and a wonderful daily reading.
00:21:54
Speaker
I know I did. i really enjoyed it. There was so much. We could have talked about anything, but I really feel that that was the big picture. Remember, we're focusing on the big picture, not on every single detail.
00:22:06
Speaker
And all of what we read about today has to do with doing the right thing. And we choose to do the right thing because it's, it's what God wants us to do.
00:22:19
Speaker
We want to make God happy. We want to learn how to be more like God and love one another, not to be like people. We're not supposed to be like the world. So thank you for joining me today.
