Today's we will continue reading Paul's first letter to the Corinthians with Chapter 9:1, 3-11, 13-27  and Chapter 10:1, 5-15, 23-28, and 31-33.

Today we will read about Paul's encouragement that God will always provide a way out of any sinful situation so that we do not have to commit the same sins that people have committed over and over throughout the years. We have the record of the Old Testament written down for us so that we can learn from the situations people have encountered and the sins they committed. Indeed, through our daily reading this year and our daily applications we have discussed these sins and talked about how we can avoid the same ones!

Once again, in today's reading, Paul will elaborate on WHY it is important for us to be careful and not allow our freedom to be a stumbling block to anyone else's faith.

In our discussion for daily application we will tie together the many things we have learned this year in our reading of the Bible: not repeating the sins we have learned about this year - they are not unique struggles only for us, the fact that God always gives us a way to say no to sinful choices/behavior, our being set free from the sinful nature by Jesus, using that freedom to be thoughtful of those who may see us doing things that they think may be sinful, and finally, I will share my testimony of an example how God tied ALL these applications into my own life recently!

Themes from 1 Corinthians: Consideration and Freedom

00:02:30
Speaker
Well, today we are picking up, we are still reading in the book of 1 Corinthians, which is the first letter that Paul wrote to the Corinthian communities while he was staying in Ephesus.
00:02:43
Speaker
We have been discussing ah different questions that the communities over there had. And the overarching theme in the first book of Corinthians is not leading other people astray.
00:02:57
Speaker
And we're going to see more of that in today's ah continued reading as we pick up in chapters nine and 10. Paul is stressing the fact that while we are free in Jesus, not everything we are free to do is good for us.
00:03:14
Speaker
And not only that, but everything that we are free to do is not necessarily good for those who see us, for those around us. And so today, Paul is going to be talking about the importance of living a life that is not just for you and not just for Jesus, but for those that may see you, for those around you.
00:03:37
Speaker
Because as we mentioned yesterday, sometimes we can be perfectly okay with doing something and it doesn't affect our strength in our faith and it doesn't cause us to sin.
00:03:48
Speaker
But because of other people who may perceive what we are doing as being wrong, We need to be careful, not for our own sake, but to be thoughtful of other people.
00:04:00
Speaker
And Paul is going to elaborate a little bit more on that concept today. Jesus told us that if you love one another, then people will know that you are my followers.
00:04:12
Speaker
So these are things that we are doing out of a sense of love for one another. Yesterday, Paul mentioned that it is not ah gifts that puff us up and make us um wonderful. It doesn't build us up.
00:04:28
Speaker
It's actually love. Love is what builds us up. So these choices that we make, to be thoughtful of other people and how they perceive sin is is an act of love.
00:04:44
Speaker
It's not an act of requirement or law or rule. It's an act of love. When we actively choose to be loving toward other people and be conscientious of how other people ah perceive correct behavior in Jesus.
00:05:02
Speaker
then we are ah being loving toward them.

Paul's Commitment and Preaching for Free

00:05:06
Speaker
So here we go. Let's pick up in chapter nine. And the first section is about um that God's work is, but God's workers are entitled to be paid for the work that they do.
00:05:22
Speaker
So that's what this first section is about. But Paul is explaining that although he could request or require payment, He chooses not to do so, not because he he wants to make them feel guilty about it, but because it is his pleasure to bring you, the good ah to bring us, to bring them the good news.
00:05:48
Speaker
So just to give us a recap of the last paragraph, so we have fluidity and continuity between chapters. Paul says, what if the food I eat makes someone sin?
00:05:58
Speaker
Well, then I will never eat that food again, and that way I won't make anyone lose his faith. Am I free? Starts today's reading. Yes. Am I an apostle?
00:06:11
Speaker
Yes. Have I seen our Lord? Yes. Now some people try to judge me, but here is what I tell them. Isn't it all right for us to eat and drink?
00:06:27
Speaker
Wouldn't it be all right for a wife to come with us? Our big Bible says a believing wife. Wives follow Jesus too. We know that to be true.
00:06:38
Speaker
I'm a wife and I follow Jesus. And I'm sure many of you are wives and you follow Jesus too. The other apostles take their wives. Jesus's brothers do.
00:06:49
Speaker
Peter does. Now, in our big Bible, it it names Peter as Cephas or Cephas, but it is those are just other names for Peter. So I love that our version tells us, plain and simple, we're referring to Peter.
00:07:05
Speaker
And I never knew that before today. I just thought that was an interesting little tidbit. I had never picked up on that, that Peter had eventually gotten married. I just thought that's that's cute to know.
00:07:19
Speaker
And are Barnabas and I the only ones who work for a living? If you plant grapes, you get to eat them. If you keep goats, you get to drink their goat milk.
00:07:31
Speaker
And the law that God gave Moses says it this way. Let the ox eat the wheat that it's working on. Now God wasn't just thinking about oxen.
00:07:44
Speaker
He was thinking about the farmer who works in the field. The farmer should get to have part of what he grows. And God was thinking about us too.
00:07:55
Speaker
We are planting God's seed. It is seed for the spirit. So shouldn't we get something for it? The priests who serve at the altar get a share of what's given.
00:08:08
Speaker
And it should be the same way for us. We teach God's good news and God says that everyone who does that should get paid for it. But I have not taken any pay and I am not writing this so that you will pay me.
00:08:23
Speaker
I teach the good news because I have to teach. How sad it would be for me if I didn't do it. What if I teach because that's what I want to do? then God has a gift for me.
00:08:36
Speaker
And what if I teach because I have to do it? Then I'm only doing what I know I should. So what is the gift that I get? Only this.
00:08:49
Speaker
I can teach the good news for free. No one has to pay me for doing it. I am free

Discipline and Spiritual Life Analogies

00:08:59
Speaker
and I don't belong to any person.
00:09:02
Speaker
But I serve everyone because I want to help a lot of people believe in Jesus. I became like a Jew to help Jews believe in Jesus.
00:09:13
Speaker
And I became like a person who follows the law, even though I am not under the law, only Messiah's law. did it to help law followers believe in Jesus. ah And I became like a person who does not follow a law.
00:09:29
Speaker
Although I am not without law, I am under Messiah's law. And that way I could help people who don't follow the law. And I could help them believe in Jesus.
00:09:40
Speaker
For those who are weak, I became weak. And I did it to help weak people believe in Jesus. I have become all things to all people.
00:09:53
Speaker
And that way I have the best chance to save some people. And I do it all for the good news about Jesus. I want to share the good things that it brings.
00:10:07
Speaker
Now all the runners in a race run, but only one of them will win. Run, run well so that you will win. all people who race have to practice hard before they run.
00:10:20
Speaker
And they do it to win something that won't even last. But we are like runners for God's kingdom. And we run to get something that will last forever.
00:10:39
Speaker
I don't run like a man running for no reason. I taught other people how to live. So I don't want to lose the race myself. Our Big Bible says verse 27 this way.
00:10:54
Speaker
Rather, I punish my body and bring it into submission so that after so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

Lessons from Israel's History

00:11:10
Speaker
Chapter 10, a way to say no. I want you to know something. God's people who lived in Moses' time followed God's cloud.
00:11:23
Speaker
But God was not happy with most of them, and most of them died in the desert. And this happened to teach us that we should not want to sin. That's what they did.
00:11:36
Speaker
Do not worship idols. Some of them did, and God's word tells us about it. The people ate and drank, and then they had a wild party. And we should not use sex in a wrong way.
00:11:49
Speaker
Some of them did. And what happened them? 23,000 of them died in one day. If you've been with us since the beginning, you may remember that that's how many people died when they would not follow God.
00:12:05
Speaker
When Moses had gone up to receive the law and ah the people were impatient and wanted to have an idol that they could see. a God that they could see rather than the God who was up there with Moses.
00:12:22
Speaker
Now we should not test God to see how much we can get away with. Some of them did this too. And what happened to them? Snakes killed them.
00:12:34
Speaker
And don't make a fuss about things. Some of them did. And what happened to them? God sent an angel to get rid of them. but And things happened to teach us.
00:12:46
Speaker
God had someone write about these things to tell us of danger. Now time is moving on and God's promises are coming true. So if you think that you are doing well, you better be careful because you might sin in one of these ways too.
00:13:05
Speaker
Now the only sins that come to your mind are sins that everyone has problems with. God won't let a sin come to your mind unless he knows you can say no to it.
00:13:18
Speaker
Let's say a sin comes to your mind, then God gives you a way to say no. And that way, you can win over sin.
00:13:31
Speaker
Run away from the worship of idols. you have a good mind, think about it and choose what is right. I might say that everything is all right for me to do, but not everything is good for me to do.
00:13:48
Speaker
And I might say everything is all right for me to do, but not everything makes me a better person. So nobody should look for what's good just for themselves.
00:14:02
Speaker
Look for what is good for other people too.
00:14:06
Speaker
Eat anything that the meat market sells and just don't ask questions about it. Don't ask questions about it being right or wrong. Because David said it this way in a psalm, the earth and everything in it belong to God.
00:14:24
Speaker
Now let's say you know someone who

Temptation and Shared Struggles

00:14:26
Speaker
does not follow Jesus and he asks you to eat with him. And you do. Just eat whatever he puts on your plate and don't ask if it's right or wrong.
00:14:35
Speaker
But let's say he talks about the food and he tells you about it and he says this food was a gift to an idol. Then don't eat it.
00:14:47
Speaker
Don't eat it for the sake of the conscience, for the one who told you that it was sacrificed to an idol.
00:14:56
Speaker
You may eat and you may drink, but whatever you do, Do it to show how great God is. Our Big Bible puts it this way. Do it for the glory of God.
00:15:09
Speaker
So don't make other people do anything that they think that they shouldn't do. I try to make everyone happy. I'm not looking for what's good just for me. I'm looking for what is good for many people.
00:15:23
Speaker
And that way, they can be saved from their sins.
00:15:29
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:15:35
Speaker
I love Paul's teaching, don't you? His teaching is so rich. It is so meaty. It is not just milk for new beginners, is it? So let's talk about our daily application.
00:15:50
Speaker
And we talked a little bit about it before we began so that we would have understanding of what we were going to be hearing and reading. And what Paul is telling us here is that it is not everything is good for us.
00:16:06
Speaker
And we talked about that yesterday. And we talked about that and things that we do, we have to be careful for other people. We need to be thoughtful of other people.
00:16:18
Speaker
But not only that, but...
00:16:24
Speaker
I love how Paul talks about the fact that our enemy gives us the same temptations over and over again. And we have these temptations recorded.
00:16:35
Speaker
And this is one of the reasons why we are taught to confess our sins to one another. We can have a tendency to feel inside like we are the only ones dealing with something. And that's one of the reasons why I share my daily applications that God is working in my life so that I am confessing to you what is going on so that you can see this is not a a unique situation just for me.

Applying Biblical Teachings to Life

00:17:01
Speaker
I know that. It may be that nobody listening here has any um similar problems, but somewhere other people do have the same difficulties.
00:17:12
Speaker
And I know that this is true because as I have struggled, for instance, with my daughter, and I talk about it with the other believers and my congregation, I am told over and over how they have had similar struggles with their adult children who are about the same age.
00:17:30
Speaker
And I get to receive their wisdom for how they have handled it and how they have taken it to God and the different things that God has done for them. And you know what I got to say is that in every situation for everybody who has had these difficult problems with their yeah um adult young children, is that interestingly enough, even though I was very much wanting understand tell my daughter, you know, you're so unhappy living here. You don't like anything we do.
00:18:02
Speaker
You don't like anything we buy. You don't like anything about anything. All you do is complain 24 seven. And it's so frustrating that, you know, back in the day, it was, if you didn't like the way your parents did things, you just moved out.
00:18:16
Speaker
You went your own way. You said, I will live my own life. But instead, she just wants to be like in a bad relationship where she just wants to complain about everything. So I was ready for her to say, if you're not going to break this relationship off, I'm going to break it up.
00:18:31
Speaker
We don't need to be together anymore. And you know, what's interesting is that in every situation where the other um people I have spoken to have had this difficult situation, do you know God has brought them to the same situation?
00:18:44
Speaker
conclusion that he is telling them that they are not to have their children move out despite their difficulties and that they took it to God and said, Lord, I don't know, you you got to do something because I just want them to be to be gone.
00:19:00
Speaker
They need to move on. And in every circumstance, including my own, God said the right thing to do is to wait.
00:19:10
Speaker
So that was very interesting. So our God is consistent. So he does not send unique struggles to us. I guarantee you, no matter what we have that we are going through, God will send someone who is having the same difficulties so that we can encourage one another.
00:19:31
Speaker
So that we can learn from one another and by taking it to God and knowing that we are not alone. So I could have simply gone my own way and said, I know this is what other people have are are doing and what they feel that God has led them to do.
00:19:47
Speaker
And I do feel that God is leading me to do this, but I'm not going to do it. I want to do it this way.
00:19:54
Speaker
i God provided me with with um answer in that. He gave me affirmation in his word. He brought it just at the right time.
00:20:07
Speaker
So he gave me a way to say no. He gave it to me knowing that I would be strong enough to make the right decision when the time came to do it my way or to listen to what I could feel him telling me and doing it his way.
00:20:23
Speaker
So that's what Paul is talking about here, that no matter how difficult the struggle is that you are going through, there is always a way to do it God's way.

Physical Desires vs. Spiritual Discipline

00:20:35
Speaker
And Jesus told us that we are no longer slaves to sin. Doing things our own way is a sin when we know that God is telling us to do something a different way.
00:20:47
Speaker
So God, ah Jesus tells us that he is the son and we are no longer a slave to that sin. Paul puts it in in into the words, that's why I read it out of our big Bible for verse 27.
00:20:59
Speaker
He says, I beat my body into submission. so that after I have taught everybody else, I myself will not be disqualified. And that's why Paul says, i do what I say.
00:21:12
Speaker
so I needed to follow as he begged met begged us to be an imitator of Paul, as I mentioned, and obey what and do what I say. And so that is what we are learning.
00:21:25
Speaker
we arent i can I can beat my body into submission because I'm choosing to do God's will the same way Jesus did. And so Jesus told us, as I've been getting to, that if the Son has set us free as he is the Son, free from sin, free from wanting to do things our way, then we are free indeed.
00:21:47
Speaker
And that's what Paul is telling us, is that there will be a way for us to say, no, I don't want to do this the sinful way. we have We have also been learning that there are two sides to us.
00:21:59
Speaker
We have the sinful side and the spiritual side, the physical side and the spiritual side, and they are battling with each other. And we are on the winning side. Jesus and God will give us the way to beat down that sinful nature and choose what is right.
00:22:17
Speaker
Are we going to be 100% perfect? Nope. But when we are weak, he is strong. And so this is all coming together. I love our big picture, don't you?
00:22:30
Speaker
That by reading everything in order, we can see how everything is progressing. We can see the growth that we are having. And we can see how one concept builds upon another so that we have

Community Support and Overcoming Sin

00:22:44
Speaker
understanding. And it gives us greater strength because God's word is so useful for helping us to be strong in times of of weakness.
00:22:55
Speaker
And so Paul explains to us here that where none of these sins are new. And nothing under the sun is new. And if we have struggled are struggling with it, we can find those applications in our um and our big Bible um and with other believers who have gone through things.
00:23:14
Speaker
So that is our encouragement, is that we don't have to submit and do things our own way. We don't have to think that our sins are unique because our adversary wants us to feel like we are alone.
00:23:27
Speaker
Don't be alone. Be in community. Because God uses community. God used Julie in my community to bring me that Bible verse, to help push me into where I needed to go so that I would make that right spiritual decision.
00:23:44
Speaker
And I'm so thankful for the community that God has given me, both in my congregation and in my friend Julie. And you have a friend like Julie too somewhere. And if not, God will send you somebody.
00:23:56
Speaker
That one who gives you the Bible verses that God puts in their mind to send to you just when you need it. God is so awesome. He provides for us. He gives us the way to say no to the sins that ah we are struggling with, that we could fall into.
00:24:14
Speaker
So let's be encouraged in that. And then... Continuing on with what Paul said, when we make these decisions to do the right thing, we are and we are looking out not just for ourselves, but for others.
00:24:28
Speaker
So remember, part of the reason why i wanted to make that right decision was so that I would not cause anybody else to sin either.
00:24:38
Speaker
Because Paul teaches us, we need over and over again in this letter to the Corinthians, that we need to be looking out for one another. And we learned that in our old covenant too, didn't we? that That people are like sheep.
00:24:50
Speaker
When they see us doing bad things, bad things, then we they will follow and they will think it's all right to do those things. But if they see us doing good things, they will be encouraged and follow to do good things.
00:25:05
Speaker
And so we must do as we say. Well, thank you so much for joining me. I hope that you are encouraged and feel that God has lit your light in today's daily reading of our Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:25:19
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me. I hope that you are hungry for more of God's Word. Feel free to look up your Big Bible and read 1 Corinthians, chapters 9 and 10, if you want to hear more of the tiny details that are included in our Big Bible, that you feel like there's just a little bit more for you.
00:25:36
Speaker
And as always, I hope you are also hungry for tomorrow's daily reading because we're doing this all year. We're going to finish the Bible. We have only two more months of the entire 365 days. We have only about days left.
00:25:52
Speaker
And we are done. We are in the home stretch of this race. Keep running. You've got this. Run so that you will win. We are running toward a reward that is eternal, as Paul said today.
00:26:07
Speaker
We are not running a race for a perishable crown. When people would

Encouragement and Eternal Rewards

00:26:11
Speaker
run a race ah in the Greek games, their grand gift was um a little crown made of leaves.
00:26:23
Speaker
Congratulations, all that work. And now you have a crown of leaves that dies. but will wilt. But our crown is the crown of life.
00:26:36
Speaker
Our crown is the crown of life. That crown will last forever, eternal life with Jesus and God. So I hope that you will join me again for tomorrow's daily reading and the day after that and so that we can finish this year out strong.
00:26:53
Speaker
And until we meet again, feel free to get that bookmarking commitment calendar on my site so that you know where you left off, so that you can catch up to any readings that you may have missed. And I will see you again next time. I hope you have a very blessed full day today full of the Holy Spirit and God's word for you in every way.
00:27:14
Speaker
See you then.
