Today's we will read the rest of Chapter 19 of Acts, vs 23-20:1 and begin Paul's 2nd letter to the Corinthians with Chapter 1:1, 3-11, 15-24 and Chapter 2:1-2, 4-8, 10-11, 14-17.

Today we will read about sharing in one another's struggles as well as the comfort we receive from God's love and kindness. Paul reminded the Corinthians that they helped him during his troubles by praying for him. Paul also encouraged forgiveness to be given to the person in Corinth who made both him and the other believers in Corinth sad. Paul advised them that the community needed to remind the offending person how much they loved him so that he would not be overly sad and so that Satan would not outwit them.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of sharing in one another struggles, bearing one another's burdens, and also being able to share in the comfort that the Holy Spirit gives to them (and us!). We will be encouraged to pray for one another, since it is helpful for those going through difficult times. We will also be reminded to forgive one another because Jesus forgave us. We need to practice forgiveness with one another so that Satan does not cause division between believers.

Introduction and Daily Reading

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome back, everybody. Today is November 5th. My name is Robin. I'm within the Family Way Coaching, and together we are here for our daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:17

I am so glad that we are together again and that we are enjoying God's word. Thank you for helping me spread the word about reading God's word. You are here reading or or not reading, watching or listening with this with me.
00:00:32

And i am very thankful to God for the pleasure to be able to bring you this event and that you are hungry for God's word and that you are helping me spread the word about reading God's word.

Exploration of Acts 19 and Paul's Letters

00:00:44
Speaker
If you are using your bookmarking commitment calendar, go ahead and take that out and get your sticker ready or whatever you are using to mark off your days, because we are about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:59
Speaker
Today we are going to be picking up with Acts chapter 19, and then we will begin the second letter that Paul wrote to the Corinthians and cover chapters 1 and 2.
00:01:12
Speaker
Now, remember that this Bible reading is done chronologically. So as Paul has finished writing his letter to the Corinthians, the first letter, he was writing to them from Ephesus.
00:01:25
Speaker
And that's where the Ephesians were. And so now he is still in Ephesus during this

Conflict in Ephesus and Its Resolution

00:01:32
Speaker
time. And so as we pick up in Acts chapter 19, we are going to be hearing about some events that are occurring in Ephesus.
00:01:44
Speaker
Now some problems came up in Ephesus. There was a man who worked with silver. He made silver worship figures for a fake god. And it was a woman goddess.
00:01:55
Speaker
Her name was Artemis. And other silver workers helped to make the figures too. And they got lots of money for doing this. Now Demetrius got the other workers together one day.
00:02:09
Speaker
And he said to them, We get lots of money in our business. But Paul tells people not to believe in Artemis because he says that the gods we make are not real.
00:02:21
Speaker
And people won't think our business is important anymore. And then people won't even think our great goddess Artemis is important. So now the silver workers were very angry and they began to shout.
00:02:38
Speaker
They began to shout, Artemis is great! Artemis is great! She is the goddess of Ephesus! And soon the whole city went along with it.
00:02:52
Speaker
So now two men had been traveling with Paul, and the people pulled them into the crowd. The crowd took them to the meeting place. Paul wanted to go to the crowd and he wanted to talk to them, but Jesus' followers would not let him go.
00:03:11
Speaker
Some of the leaders of the land were Paul's friends, and they sent him a message. They begged Paul not to go to the meeting place.
00:03:23
Speaker
You know, most people didn't even really know what was going on. Some were shouting this and some were shouting that. And most of them didn't even know why they had come.
00:03:36
Speaker
Now the Jews had a man named Alexander go up to the front of the crowd. And some of them shouted at him, telling him what to do. But Alexander waved his hand.
00:03:49
Speaker
He wanted everyone to be quiet so he could talk. But the people found out that Alexander was Jewish, and then they all began shouting together, Artemis is great.
00:04:02
Speaker
And so for about two hours, they continuously shouted, Artemis is great. At last, there was a city leader who got them to be quiet.
00:04:14
Speaker
He said to the people, Everybody knows that our city guards the worship house of Artemis. So be quiet. Don't do anything that you will be sorry for later.
00:04:27
Speaker
You brought these men here, he said to the people of Ephesus. And they didn't rob the worship house. They didn't say anything bad about our goddess.
00:04:38
Speaker
Do Demetrius and the other silver workers have a problem with somebody? Then they can tell it to the judge. We, however, are in danger here, he said.
00:04:51
Speaker
This was the city leader. We might all be blamed for starting a riot. And then we wouldn't be able to tell why. And there is no good reason for it.
00:05:03
Speaker
And then he told everybody to go home.

Paul's Farewell and Letters from Macedonia

00:05:07
Speaker
And after this, Paul called the believers together. He cheered them up. And then he said goodbye because he left for Macedonia. And from there, he wrote another letter to Jesus' followers in Corinth.
00:05:26
Speaker
And here is the letter that he wrote. I'm going to read the beginning part of that letter out of our Big Bible because it doesn't quite include the ah the beginning part of it.
00:05:42
Speaker
Paul always introduces his letters, by the way, as by saying that it is from him. When we write letters nowadays, we usually just say to whoever it is to. We don't usually say this letter is from and then give our names.
00:05:57
Speaker
But that's the way that it was done back then.

Paul on God's Comfort and Promises

00:06:01
Speaker
So after Paul told them that it was that he was writing, He says, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus the Messiah, the Father of compassion and God of all encouragement.
00:06:21
Speaker
Cheer for God because he makes us feel better about our troubles. And now we can help other people feel better about their troubles.
00:06:32
Speaker
We give them the same love that God gave us.
00:06:40
Speaker
We share the hard times that Jesus had, but we share his loving kindness too. His loving kindness makes us feel better.
00:06:52
Speaker
If we have hard times, then it is so you will feel better. It's so you will be saved from sin. If we cheer up, then it is so you will cheer up too.
00:07:05
Speaker
and that helps you wait when times get hard. We know you share our hard times, so we know that you share our good times too.
00:07:16
Speaker
We want you to know about our troubles in Asia. It was very hard. It was more than we could take. We really thought that we were going to die.
00:07:29
Speaker
But this happened so that we would not lean on ourselves, but we had to lean on God. God is so great. He makes people come back to life, and he is the one who saved us from danger. And he will keep saving us too.
00:07:49
Speaker
We have put our hope in him, and you help us by praying for us. Two times I made plans to visit you.

Forgiveness and Unity in the Community

00:07:58
Speaker
And I wanted to help you. And did I plan this without thinking?
00:08:04
Speaker
Do I plan like people of the world do? do I say yes and then no at the same time? you God always keeps his promises.
00:08:15
Speaker
That's for sure. And we don't say yes and no at the same time. That is just as sure. Jesus never says yes and no at the same time.
00:08:27
Speaker
It has always been yes with Jesus. And God has made many promises. And they are all answered with a yes because of Jesus.
00:08:40
Speaker
And through Jesus, we say yes too. And that shows us how great God is.
00:08:48
Speaker
God chose us, and he showed that we belong to him. He put his spirit in our hearts, and that is something that he gives us to show what is coming.
00:09:01
Speaker
It's a sign of his promise. Now, God knows that I did not want you to worry, so I did not come back to Corinth. And I'm not your boss. Instead, i work with you.
00:09:16
Speaker
And that way you can have joy. Your faith will keep you strong and it will keep you following God.
00:09:28
Speaker
I chose not to visit you because it would only hurt and I might cry for you. i was upset when I wrote to you. My heart was very sad.
00:09:39
Speaker
i had cried many tears. But I did not write to make you sad. I wrote so that you would know how much I love you.
00:09:51
Speaker
Now someone there with you has made me sad. And in a way, he has made everybody sad. And do you see the way everyone has acted toward him?
00:10:03
Speaker
That has paid him back for what he has done. That is enough. Now you need to forgive him. Try to cheer him up. And that way sadness will not be too much for him.
00:10:18
Speaker
So let him know that you love him. And if you forgive, then I forgive too. And I forgive because of Jesus and because of you.
00:10:32
Speaker
And that way, Satan won't be too smart for us. We know that he tries to plan bad things.
00:10:42
Speaker
Thank God. He always leads us like winners in a parade with Jesus. He uses us to show everyone how sweet it is to know Jesus.
00:10:57
Speaker
And it's like we offer a sweet smell that goes all the way through the air God.
00:11:04
Speaker
To people who don't believe, we are like a deadly smell. but to people who believe, we are the sweet smell of life.
00:11:16
Speaker
We are not like a lot of people. We don't try to sell God's word to people to make money. And instead, Jesus helps us to say what is true.
00:11:27
Speaker
And God sent us. He knows that.
00:11:34
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Applying Bible Teachings Daily

00:11:41
Speaker
We had so much good stuff in today's reading. Oh my gosh. i was like, oh Lord, what is our daily application? It could be so many things.
00:11:52
Speaker
There were so much in in today's word. There always is, isn't there? Our God's Bible is so rich. There is, it's just all of it is so good for teaching and correction and for building us up and training us to do every good work that God has planned for us to do.
00:12:12
Speaker
oh boy. Well, let's start a little bit and at the beginning, not at the very beginning. Let's go back to the beginning of the letter to the Corinthians.
00:12:24
Speaker
We encourage one another because God encourages us. He uses the Holy Spirit to do this. Part of the role of the Holy Spirit, part of the job of the Holy Spirit, is to be our comforter.
00:12:41
Speaker
He makes us feel better. and we share in one another's struggles. So that means that when we feel better because the Holy Spirit has comforted us, we also share in one another's joy.
00:12:56
Speaker
i love that daily application. oh that is so good. And Paul says that they helped because they prayed for him. So that is how we help one another too.
00:13:09
Speaker
with prayer. And then the Holy Spirit encourages us. And then when we see ah the person that we are suffering with encouraged, we too are encouraged.
00:13:22
Speaker
As we also learned recently, nothing we go through is ever unique. Everything we go through, someone has gone through before. we are meant to help other people when they go through the same things that we are going through or have gone through.
00:13:39
Speaker
And it is God's love and kindness that encourages us. And then that same love and kindness that we received encourages those who are sharing in our troubles.
00:13:54
Speaker
Isn't that a wonderful connection? yeah God is so clear that we are connected so much in this body of Jesus.
00:14:06
Speaker
It's not simply being part of the same club. We're all believers. It's that we share God's very spirit. Paul tells us today that he put his spirit in our hearts, and he did this to show us what was coming.
00:14:24
Speaker
The Holy Spirit is a sign of the promise that God has made for us. And we know that when God makes promises, he keeps them.
00:14:35
Speaker
God is so faithful. We need to strive to be faithful like God is faithful to
00:14:44
Speaker
So our next section that I wanted to talk about for our daily application is forgiveness. Paul is speaking about somebody in the Corinthian community who did something that made everybody sad.
00:14:58
Speaker
It made Paul sad. It made them sad. And as a result, apparently people had stopped talking to him or them. We don't know if it was a man or a woman.
00:15:09
Speaker
But we know that they did something and it was very hurtful. But Paul says, that's enough. It's time to forgive. And Paul says in our big Bible that he's telling them this so that he will know if they are obedient in all things.
00:15:27
Speaker
We are called to forgive as well. Paul tells us today that the reason we that they needed to forgive was so that that person's sadness would not be too much for them.
00:15:41
Speaker
And that they needed to know That they were loved by the people there in Corinth. That is so important. We need to make sure that when that when we forgive somebody, that we also let them know how much we love them.
00:15:58
Speaker
And Paul is ah very helpful for us in this lesson because he tells us that this way, Satan can't get the better of us. He knows how to be tricky.
00:16:12
Speaker
He knows how to be smart. And he wants to pit us against each other. And he wants to keep us from forgiveness. He wants us to have division.
00:16:23
Speaker
And Paul is reminding us that we need to have forgiveness and love and to become one again. to make sure that we are not disrupting our unity.
00:16:36
Speaker
The way Jesus put it was that a house divided against itself cannot stand. So we need to make sure that we are united, that we offer forgiveness, and that we make sure that the person we are forgiving knows how much we love them.
00:16:55
Speaker
And Paul tells us to thank God because he always leads us like we are winners in a parade with Jesus. ah That is so wonderful, isn't it? We are in like in a parade.
00:17:10
Speaker
We are winners. We are on the winning side. We are not slaves to our sin. We can forgive. We don't have to be stubborn because the Son has set us free from our sin.
00:17:25
Speaker
And if we are forgiven, we also need to forgive. And Paul tells us this too. He says, if you forgive, then I forgive too. And I forgive because of Jesus and because of you.
00:17:42
Speaker
So I hope that you have really enjoyed our daily reading today and that you are very encouraged, that you are encouraged to share one another's struggles, knowing that it's not just struggles we share, but it is successes that we share, the comfort that we share.
00:17:59
Speaker
So let's pray for one another and take part in the troubles of whatever somebody is experiencing when we know them. And then that way, when they receive encouragement and comfort from God, that we also may share in that encouragement.
00:18:16
Speaker
Because it's the same love and kindness that they received that we will receive too. And one more thing Paul says about that is that when we share in one another's struggles and we share in that encouragement, it has the side effect of helping us to be patient when times are hard.
00:18:39
Speaker
Because we know that others are praying for us and God will send us encouragement. So it gives us patience when times are hard. So if you are going through something difficult right now, ask for prayer and be patient for God's encouragement because God makes us feel better about our troubles.
00:19:01
Speaker
And then we can also help other people feel better when they go through the same things or when they share in our struggles.
00:19:09
Speaker
So thank you so much for joining me today. i hope you loved today's reading as much as I did. it was so encouraging. was so encouraging. I hope that you are hungry for more of God's word.
00:19:23
Speaker
I hope that you are encouraged even to take the time to read on your own. First current or second Corinthians chapters one and two, because it's, it's a really good read today.
00:19:34
Speaker
And then I always love reading it in our day by day kids Bible, and then reading it in our big Bible, because then there are so many fine details, right?
00:19:46
Speaker
that it just really helps click and come together when we read the easy to understand version and then we read the bigger language version with the more details it's It's really encouraging and it really leaves us well educated when we take the time to do that.

The Importance of God's Word

00:20:07
Speaker
You don't have to, but I hope that you are hungry for more of God's word and just always can't get enough of it. And then with that regard as well, I hope that you will be hungry tomorrow and want to feed on God's word with me again.
00:20:21
Speaker
I hope that you are enjoying me feeding you with God's word and that you are enjoying also our daily applications and that you are continuing to find them applicable for you in every day.
00:20:33
Speaker
God's word is so valuable. And as I said earlier, and a lot of other days too, that God's word is so useful for teaching and correction and encouragement and for teaching us how to be prepared for the good works that God has planned for us to do.
00:20:52
Speaker
He is preparing us. Oh man, I know that every day I feel like he is preparing us for things and and he is... And then when these good works come our way, we are able to do them.
00:21:04
Speaker
And remember, as we read yesterday, nothing we are doing is for nothing. Everything we do matters. You matter. So sharing in somebody's struggle, that matters.
00:21:18
Speaker
When you pray for somebody, that matters. We are helping God's people, furthering his kingdom. Everything we do matters.
00:21:30
Speaker
So thank you again, and I hope you have a very blessed, wonderful day today, no matter what day you have gotten around to listening to or watching our November 5th daily reading from the Day by Day Kids Bible.
00:21:43
Speaker
I know it's very late by the time I get this out. I've had some very busy days, and I have not been great about getting it out early in the day. So I apologize for that.

Closing Remarks and Future Invitations

00:21:52
Speaker
But thank you for your grace, and thank you for joining me here, no matter what time you get around to hearing it after I get to publishing it.
00:22:00
Speaker
And I will see you again next time. Until then, have a very blessed day.
