Today's we will finish reading Paul's first letter to the 1 Thessalonians with Chapter 5 and begin his 2nd letter to the Thessalonians, covering chapter 1 and 2.

Today we will continue to read about Paul's encouragement to the believers in Thessalonica in regard to their concern for Jesus' return. There was concern for the fact that Jesus had already returned and that they had somehow missed it! Paul will reassure the listener not to worry, when Jesus returns it will be at a time no one is expecting, like when a woman goes into labor for a child to be born, and no one will be able to miss it, because it will be a magnificent event that no one will be able to miss! Therefore, in today's reading, Paul will continue to encourage the believers to continue loving one another and continue in their faith, as they were already doing.

In our discussion for daily application we will be encouraged by Paul today not to repay evil for evil to anyone, but instead, to be kind to everybody, always show our joy, pray, and be grateful to God for everything He does for us because these are things God wants us to do! Let us continue to let God's Holy Spirit work in us, not turning away from God, so that God will make our whole heart clean from any kind of sin.

I ought to always thank God for you, my brothers and sisters, as is appropriate, because your faithfulness is growing wonderfully and the love of each one of you for one another continually increases.
00:00:35
Speaker
I hope you are having a fantastic rest ah fantastic day today, whatever day you are getting around to viewing or listening to this October 27th daily reading out of our Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:50

Praise Report & Growth Discussion

00:00:59
Speaker
And if you are following along on your bookmarking commitment calendar, and go ahead and take that out and get that sticker ready or whatever you're using to mark off your days, because we're about to hear the Bible today.
00:01:14
Speaker
I would like to start today off also with a praise report. I want to tell you guys thank you. I tell you thank you for viewing or listening however you are following along with this podcast or this daily reading event.
00:01:27
Speaker
But I want you to know that you are having an impact. I am seeing a lot of views on the analytics for YouTube and that's because of you. You are spreading the word about reading God's word.
00:01:41
Speaker
In the last week or two, we hit over 500 views in one month and our subscribers have grown. When I first started this on January 1st, there were two subscribers.
00:01:54
Speaker
There was my good friend Julie and her family who were following along, and I had one other person who had found the event. And now God has grown his event to 46 as of today's date.
00:02:08
Speaker
And not only that, but the views that it is being shown on YouTube has grown from 500 about a week or two ago to now it's almost 700 views in 28-day period.
00:02:20
Speaker
views in a twenty eight day period So praise God. I wanted to share that report with you. We are helping to spread the word about reading God's word. Now, that doesn't mean that 500 or 600 people have sat there and listened to the entire message. So I don't want to give a false type of report.
00:02:40
Speaker
That means, however, is that your lighting of the light button is helping this event to be seen by more people. And that is how this event has been growing. Now, it's not for me that I am concerned about this event growing.
00:02:54
Speaker
I'm not popular. Nobody is reaching out to me and chattting chit chatting with me. And this is for spreading the word about reading God's word. So God's word is being heard.
00:03:06
Speaker
And that's what we're looking to do. And that's what God is doing. And he is using you to do it. So I wanted to give you that praise report to let you know that God is using you. So thank you so much. I wanted you to be encouraged by that, to keep clicking those light buttons.
00:03:22
Speaker
It looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart. It looks like a share or a subscribe but or a follow. Thank you for doing that so that we are indeed God's light of the world.

Understanding Thessalonians' Concerns

00:03:33
Speaker
Well, today we are going to be picking up in a second letter to the Thessalonians. First, we will be completing chapter 5 of the first letter that Paul wrote to the Thessalonians.
00:03:45
Speaker
And then we will be reading the first and second chapters of the second letter, which was not written too long after he wrote the first letter to them. Now, as we are seeing in the first letter to the Thessalonians, a lot of the people have been concerned that God's coming, God's second coming has already come and passed.
00:04:05
Speaker
And you know what? This is still relevant for us today. Not too long ago, there was another false prophecy that Jesus was going to return on a specific date.
00:04:18
Speaker
And right away we should know that that's just something we need to close our ears to. Because Jesus and Paul have told us that no one will know the day.
00:04:29
Speaker
Jesus told us himself in Acts chapter 1 that it is not for us to know the times and seasons that have been appointed by the Father. And so what is occurring in the second letter to the Thessalonians is that now instead of being concerned that if the day of the Lord comes, those who have died are going to miss out on it.
00:04:51
Speaker
Now we are going to see that they are being told, well, it's already coming past and y'all have missed it. And that is not true either. And it's still not true today.
00:05:03
Speaker
There are going to be things that have to occur before that great day comes. And Paul is going to explain to us a little bit more about that today. And that will be part of what we read about today. That won't be part of our daily application. But I do want us to have understanding of that because it doesn't do us much good to read God's word if we don't also understand it So let's pick up first in chapter five of the first letter of Thessalonians.

Paul's Teachings on Jesus's Return

00:05:31
Speaker
And it starts out with, when will Jesus come back? What a great question, huh? We don't need to write about that, Paul tells us. You know that people will be surprised east when Jesus comes.
00:05:47
Speaker
There will be no notification by a false prophet. That's my edition. That's not in the Bible. People are surprised when a robber comes during the night too. And people don't look for a robber.
00:06:00
Speaker
And they won't be looking for Jesus. It's like a woman who is going to have a baby. She doesn't know when, but all of a sudden, it's time.
00:06:12
Speaker
It's time for that baby to come and no one can stop it. Julie, you can attest to that.
00:06:20
Speaker
Do we have any other mamas out there that can attest to that? That when the time comes, nobody knows, but when the baby comes, it's time. But you do not live in the darkness, so you should not be surprised when Jesus comes again.
00:06:36
Speaker
You are children of the light. You are children of the day. So let us be watching. Let's control ourselves.
00:06:48
Speaker
Let's have faith and love. They are like a hard metal vest that keeps us safe. And let's put our hope in being saved.
00:06:59
Speaker
That's like a hard helmet on our head. And here, this is where Paul is actually quoting Isaiah chapter 59, verse tells us that,
00:07:10
Speaker
where he tells us ah that
00:07:17
Speaker
In the Big Bible, it says, put on the breastplate of faithfulness and love and the hope of salvation as a helmet. So what are we referring to here? We're talking about the armor of God.
00:07:33
Speaker
God did not choose us so he could be angry with us. He chose us to be saved by Jesus. Jesus died for us. And that way, if we die, we live in him.
00:07:47
Speaker
And if we live, we live in him. That's what we call a win-win. So we help each other. Cheer each other up just like you're doing.
00:08:00
Speaker
Show the leaders of your group that you think that they are important because they work hard. They are in charge of you. They show you how to live.
00:08:11
Speaker
Make them feel important and love them for their work. Live with each other in peace. Tell people who are lazy that they should work and help shy people to be bold.
00:08:27
Speaker
Help people who are weak and wait quietly for people. What if people do wrong to you? Do not pay them back by doing wrong to them.
00:08:40
Speaker
Instead, try to be kind to everybody. Always show your joy. Always pray. Always thank God. This is what God wants you to do.
00:08:54
Speaker
let God's Holy Spirit work in you. Don't turn away from Him. Other people may tell you what God's plans are. Follow God's plans, which we call prophecy.
00:09:07
Speaker
But test things. Find out what's good and hold on to it. Stay away from any kind of sin.

Encouragement & Warnings for Believers

00:09:16
Speaker
God is the God of peace. And I hope he will make your whole heart clean from sin. And then nobody will speak badly about you when Jesus comes.
00:09:28
Speaker
Pray for us and tell God's people hello by giving them a godly kiss and read this letter to them from Paul, Silas, and Timothy.
00:09:41
Speaker
Now we are going to begin Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians. To Jesus' followers in Thessalonica, we pray that God's kind love and peace will fill you.
00:09:55
Speaker
We should always thank God for you. And that is because your faith is growing more and more. Your love is growing too.
00:10:07
Speaker
So we talk about you to Jesus' as followers. And we talk about how you keep going in hard times. And we talk about how you keep believing. And it just shows that what God does is right.
00:10:20
Speaker
He will keep you in his kingdom. People give you a hard time for believing in God, but God is fair. He will give trouble to people who give you trouble, and he will take our troubles away.
00:10:36
Speaker
And that will happen when Jesus comes back. And Jesus will appear. He will come from heaven. Bright fire will be around him, and his strong angels will be with him.
00:10:50
Speaker
Paul is telling us this because, again, people have said that it's already happened and people thought that they have missed it. And so Paul is is letting them know that this is not something that they could have possibly missed because when Jesus returns, he will come from heaven, there will be bright fire around him, his strong angels will be with him, and it's not going to be a scene anybody is going to just happen to miss.
00:11:14
Speaker
Now, some people never knew Jesus and some people never obeyed him. And they will not get to be with him. They will not get to see the greatness of the king's power.
00:11:27
Speaker
They will be shut out on the day Jesus comes back. When Jesus comes, his power will shine in his people. And everybody who believed in him with want will look at him with wonder.
00:11:42
Speaker
And you will too, because you believe what we told you. We always pray for you and we want God to count you as part of his people.
00:11:53
Speaker
And he can help with your good plans. We pray that people will be able to see Jesus's greatness in you.
00:12:04
Speaker
Now let's talk about Jesus's coming again. Don't get upset or mixed up. Some people told you that we said Jesus already came back. Do not believe that lie.
00:12:16
Speaker
He won't come back yet. Because before Jesus comes back, there will be a time of trouble. Many people will turn against Jesus.
00:12:27
Speaker
And then man of sin will come. He will come to fight against God, and he will even say that he is greater than God. He will go into God's worship house, but he will be thrown out.
00:12:43
Speaker
Remember, have told you this before, and you know what keeps him from coming. He will show up when did it is time. Sin's secret power is working already, but someone is keeping it back.
00:13:00
Speaker
He will keep it back, and then he will be moved out of the way, and then the sinful man will show up. But Jesus will get rid of him with his breath and his greatness.
00:13:13
Speaker
And Paul is quoting here from Isaiah.
00:13:18
Speaker
This sinful man will come to do Satan's work. And he will show wonders that are not from God. And he will do sinful things that trick people who are not following God.
00:13:30
Speaker
And they will die because they said no to God. They enjoyed being sinful. They would not love truth. And so they couldn't be saved.
00:13:42
Speaker
We should thank God for you and choose that God chose you from the very first. He chose you to be saved. He chose you to be cleansed from sin by his spirit.
00:13:57
Speaker
You were saved by believing the truth In our Big Bible, 2 Thessalonians 2, verse 13, it says, God chose you as first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
00:14:19
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:14:24
Speaker
I wanted to be sure and share with you about Paul mentioning that we are also part of the first fruits of the, of the first to be risen from the dead. Paul is referring to not the fact that we have already been resurrected, but that they were the first believers in, in Jesus. They were part of the first, they were starting the church.
00:14:47
Speaker
And so that was no small thing. So what do you think? Paul had a lot of, of, um, comforting to do to the people in for the people in Thessalonica because they were just really concerned about when Jesus was coming back first they were concerned that those who had died before it happened would be left out then they were concerned that it had already been had already occurred and they had missed it and we find that these as we spoke about before we read that these are some of the same concerns that people are still talking about today nothing is new
00:15:23
Speaker
God's word is just as relevant today as it was over 2,000 years ago. And the teaching that Paul gave 2,000 years ago is just as relevant today as it was then to the Thessalonians.
00:15:39
Speaker
So let's look at some encouragement for our daily application. So apparently some of the people in Thessalonians, because they were concerned about God's ah return, either ah going to be coming soon or that it had already happened, is that they had stopped working.
00:15:58
Speaker
And so we're going to be reading about some of that tomorrow with keeping busy. But Paul is telling us not to stop doing what we are doing. Keep going. Keep on loving. And we talked about that yesterday.
00:16:10
Speaker
So he has some additional encouragement for us today. He says that if people do wrong to us... Let's not pay them back, evil for evil. Instead, try to be kind to everybody.
00:16:24
Speaker
And this is also consistent with Jesus' teaching, where he said, if somebody strikes you on one cheek, turn to them the other. If someone takes your shirt, offer them also your coat. If somebody forces you to go one mile with them, go two miles with them.
00:16:39
Speaker
Jesus did not show us an example of repaying evil for evil. Even on the cross, Jesus said ah for the people who were crucifying him, for he asked for forgiveness for them, telling God and us that they didn't understand what it was they were doing.
00:16:59
Speaker
And it sure seemed like they understood what they were doing, but they were doing what was supposed to be done. And Jesus, even then, while they were casting lots for his clothing, he was still praying for their forgiveness.
00:17:13
Speaker
So if somebody can be on the cross, and even Stephen did this too. In Jesus's example, Stephen, when he was being stoned to death, he said, Lord, don't hold this sin against them.
00:17:25
Speaker
And then Jesus received his spirit. So we want to remember these examples that no matter how hard we may have things, we still do not want to repay evil for evil.
00:17:37
Speaker
And it can be hard not to be ah spiteful in return. We're human and we battle with this. But we've learned recently that the spiritual side of us is warring with our physical side.
00:17:51
Speaker
And we need to put aside that physical part of us because our sinful nature died with Jesus on the cross. And Jesus set us free from that sinful nature.
00:18:02
Speaker
And as we learned that if the son has set us free, then we are free indeed. And that means we need to act like it. means we need to be, what Paul says today, is to remain in control of ourselves.
00:18:16
Speaker
Also to encourage us is to always show our joy. Keep praying. Always pray. Always be grateful to God. Be thankful. And this is what God wants us to do.

Living as New Creations in Jesus

00:18:29
Speaker
Don't turn away from him, but let God's Holy Spirit work in you. It can be hard to revert back to, not to revert back to the the world's ways. But we've got to remember that we are not of this world any longer.
00:18:44
Speaker
We are born of the Spirit. We have been born anew. And so we because we are a new creation in Jesus, we need to remember that we are to act like God and Jesus.
00:18:55
Speaker
We are to be holy as he is holy. And remember that we have the Holy Spirit living within us. We are a separate holy people. So that is our encouragement today.
00:19:08
Speaker
Paul says that God is the God of Shalom. That's the word in our Big Bible. I hope he will make your whole heart clean from sin. That is our prayer today.
00:19:20
Speaker
And I also have another prayer for us today.

Closing Prayer & Encouragement

00:19:23
Speaker
It's not included in our reading today, but in 2 Thessalonians chapter two verse
00:19:36
Speaker
16, I think it is.
00:19:42
Speaker
Yes. Verse 16 of 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. i opened us with a prayer and I'm going to close us with a prayer today as well. Now may the Lord Jesus, the Messiah himself and God, our father who loved us and by grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort and strengthen your heart in every good deed,
00:20:06
Speaker
And a word.
