Today's reading will continue reading the letter Paul wrote to the Romans. We will cover Chapter 5:1-4, 6-11, Chapter 6:1-6, 9-13, 15-18, 21-23, and Chapter 7:5-7, 10, 15, 17, 21-25.

Today we will learn about the depth of the meaning of the word Shalom and how it relates to the struggles we have inside us as the sinful body fights against the Holy Spirit that God has placed within us who tell us what is sin, and to avoid doing sinful things as well as how we have shalom despite difficult earthly struggles.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how despite this internal struggle (or any other earthly difficulties!) all can be well with our soul because of this shalom that God has given us through Jesus. We will also talk about choosing who we will serve- our sinful self or God. We cannot serve both the sinful nature of ourselves and God. Since we are no longer slaves to sin we therefore choose to serve God. Our bodies have become the temple of the Living God. That means that our body is God's House, so we need to choose every day who we will serve. "As for me and my house (body) (I) will serve the Lord."

We will also read Horatio Spafford's hymn It is Well With My Soul . We will talk about claiming this gift of shalom that Jesus gives us and USING IT, not just being aware of it with head knowledge, to live out our faith the way Horatio Spafford did, when he wrote the beloved hymn after the death of two of his children and the loss of his financial investments that he had made just one day prior to the Great Chicago Fire.

Introduction & Daily Commitment

00:00:03
Speaker
Shalom Aleihem, everybody. Peace be to you. Thank you for joining me. My name is Robin. I'm with In the Family Way Coaching. And together we are here for our daily Bible reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:19
Speaker
I am so glad that you are here. i hope you're hungry today. We have a great deal of God's lovely word to go through today.

Technical Issues & Shalom Introduction

00:00:28
Speaker
So if you are following along on that bookmarking commitment calendar like me, go ahead and get that out and get that sticker ready or whatever you're using to cross off your days because we're going to hear the Bible today.
00:00:43
Speaker
I just realized today, i don't at least I don't remember having realized it before, that since we are using gold foil crosses, um for like you, Julie, and Diamond, and Jedi, and Forrest, and Pearl, we are crossing off our days.
00:00:59
Speaker
I love a good pun. And i I just, I don't think I realized that before. and We are crossing off our days.
00:01:08
Speaker
Well, thank you for joining me, whether you are following along on your podcast or whether you are listening to it, ah watching the video, rather. ah This is my second time recording this.
00:01:20
Speaker
but For some reason, my microphone, although I had it plugged in, it did not record any sound. So I've already recorded this, and now I'm just like, ah!
00:01:32
Speaker
So thankfully, though, we are going to be talking about shalom today. And despite these troubles, God is going to give me shalom. I have faith in that.
00:01:46
Speaker
So today we're going to be reading through Romans chapters 5, 6, and 7.

Understanding Shalom

00:01:52
Speaker
And we are going to be seeing Paul talk about God's gift of shalom.
00:01:59
Speaker
Now if you've been here watching or listening to this event for a while, then you may already be familiar with how deep the meaning of shalom is. I try to use that and to make sure we understand that deep meaning.
00:02:13
Speaker
Jesus said that shalom he gives us. Peace is the English word, but there is so much more to it than the English translation of the word peace.
00:02:25
Speaker
And ah to complete Jesus's thought, he said, Shalom, I give you, not as the world gives you, but as I give you. So this is not something that we can get through the world.
00:02:39
Speaker
When we think of peace, it tends to mean a lack of conflict or so quiet time or no war. When we say lack of conflict, that we are in a time that is of peace. We are not at war.
00:02:54
Speaker
But the fact is, is that the word shalom actually translates into a much deeper meaning. And it means wellness, wholeness, and completeness.
00:03:07
Speaker
So Jesus tells us that he gives us wholeness, completeness, wellness. Not as the world gives, but as only he can give it.
00:03:19
Speaker
And in part, he has given this to us with the Holy Spirit. God gives us his Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit has so many responsibilities and different roles that he does with us and for us.
00:03:36
Speaker
And part of what he does is to give us God's shalom. He unifies us in spirit so that we are one with Jesus. We are now one with God.
00:03:49
Speaker
And because we all share that same spirit, we are one with each other. And we've talked about that in the past too.

Flesh vs Spirit

00:03:56
Speaker
But today we're going to be talking about the wholeness and completeness and wellness that we can feel within our soul, despite the troubles that we have, despite this warring conflict that we always have going on with us inside of ourselves between what we might call our sinful nature, which is our flesh, our body.
00:04:23
Speaker
and the spirit that God put in us that tells us what is right and what is wrong. So when we have a tendency to hear that voice inside our mind, when we are saying, this is not the right thing to do, the world wants to call that our conscience.
00:04:43
Speaker
But that is the Holy Spirit speaking to us. That is God speaking to us. And he tells us what is right because God has now written his rules, his law on our hearts.
00:04:59
Speaker
So he communicates to us with our hearts. And we have been learning that when we didn't have Jesus and we didn't believe yet and we didn't have God's Holy Spirit, that we were slaves to sin and that now we are no longer slaves to sin.
00:05:19
Speaker
But Paul is going to explain to us today now we are choosing to become slaves to God because whatever it is that we listen to and obey, that is what we are slaves to.
00:05:34
Speaker
And Jesus taught us about this too, when he said you cannot serve two masters. We cannot serve both money and God.
00:05:45
Speaker
And I'm going to go so far as to take this concept to we cannot serve both the flesh and God, our spirit.
00:05:57
Speaker
We can only do one or the other.

Justification & Baptism

00:06:00
Speaker
And so we need to choose this day whom we will serve. Now the verse says, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
00:06:12
Speaker
But we need to remember that our bodies have become the house, the temple, the worship place of the living God. That means God lives within us.
00:06:25
Speaker
And that means that we need to choose ourselves. who this body, this house is going to serve? Is it going to serve the world and what we you just want to do, what our will is, sin, the sinful nature?
00:06:45
Speaker
Or do we choose to do the serving of God? So with that lens, with that understanding, let's open up God's word and read Romans chapters 5, 6, and 7 today.
00:07:05
Speaker
Paul tells us that we believe. And so it's just as if we never sinned. And now we have shalom with God.
00:07:17
Speaker
we have shalom. It's as if, oh, and we never sinned. And this shalom comes to us through Jesus. Jesus, who brought us to God.
00:07:31
Speaker
And now we live in God's kind love by believing in Jesus. And we show our joy because we are happy in God's power.
00:07:42
Speaker
We are happy even when we have hard times. And that's because we know that hard times teach us how to keep going. When we keep going, we grow.
00:07:56
Speaker
We grow to be good people. ah And when we are good people, we have hope. And the hope that we have is for life that lasts forever.
00:08:10
Speaker
So you see, we could not save ourselves because we had no power. But at the right time, Jesus came and he died for people who sin.
00:08:22
Speaker
Now sometimes person might die for someone who does what is right. And sometimes a person will die for another good person. But we... We are sinners and Jesus died for us anyways.
00:08:39
Speaker
And that shows just how much God loves us. And now it's just as if we had never sinned. And it's all because of Jesus's blood.
00:08:53
Speaker
Remember, Jesus told us that there would be a new covenant with his blood.
00:09:01
Speaker
What's more, we will be saved from God's anger. We were God's enemies. But now, now he lets us be his children.
00:09:12
Speaker
And it's because Jesus died. And his life is what saves us. And that's why we show our joy. Because we also can have life forever.
00:09:23
Speaker
All because Jesus is our lord
00:09:28
Speaker
So should we just sin so God can continually be kinder to us? No. No, we have died to sin. And we can't live in sin anymore.
00:09:42
Speaker
Being baptized is like going into the grave with Jesus. We call this symbolism. God gives us symbols so that we can visually see the concepts that he puts within our heart.
00:09:57
Speaker
That's my adding that. That's not in the Bible. I'm explaining to us here. So when we are baptized, we go into the water and then we come back out again.
00:10:08
Speaker
And now we can live a new life. And it's just like Jesus did when he came back to life again too. We were dipped into water.
00:10:20
Speaker
So in a sense, we have shared Jesus's grave and our old self

Freedom from Sin & Choice

00:10:27
Speaker
has died with him. And now sin is gone from us.
00:10:32
Speaker
Now sin does not control Jesus. When he died, the power of sin died with it. And he is alive now. He is living for God.
00:10:45
Speaker
And guess what? You are like that too. You are dead to the power of sin. And now you live for God.
00:10:57
Speaker
So don't let sin control you. Don't obey it. Don't give your body to sin. Don't be a tool for what is bad.
00:11:10
Speaker
Give yourself to God because he has brought you from death into life. So should we just sin because God is so kind?
00:11:23
Speaker
No. Don't you know you are the servant of the one you obey? So when you serve sin, what good did it do you?
00:11:35
Speaker
Sin just ended in death. But thanks be to God, you have obeyed his teaching. And now you are free from sin. So now you serve God.
00:11:50
Speaker
And what good does that do you? A lot of good. Because now you have become special. We would call that holy and good. And serving God leads to life that lasts forever.
00:12:07
Speaker
The pay for sin is death. But God gives us a gift. And this that gift is life that lasts forever. And it comes to us because of Jesus.

Living by the Spirit vs the Law

00:12:22
Speaker
Now, sin used to control us, and we wanted to do what was wrong. And the law let us know that it was wrong. That means that we have rules written down that are wrong. You know how your mom has rules, or your dad has rules, and they say, you can't do this, you can't do that.
00:12:38
Speaker
And if you do those things, then you're doing what is wrong, because I've made a rule about it. But guess what?
00:12:46
Speaker
disobeying those rules, the law that God made just ended in death because nobody could fulfill it. Nobody could obey all the rules all the time. Nobody was perfect.
00:12:58
Speaker
But now we do not have God's written law telling us what to do because now it's God's spirit who is telling us what is right.
00:13:09
Speaker
And now we serve God because the spirit tells us what to do. And we don't do things that we are supposed to do because of the law says to.
00:13:21
Speaker
But so does that now mean that the law is bad? No, what the law is still right and good because it shows us what is wrong, what sin is.
00:13:34
Speaker
It showed us that doing wrong is terrible because doing wrong brings death. But now I want to do good. But I can't.
00:13:46
Speaker
And instead, just keep doing things that I don't want to do. And sin is still living in me. It's right beside me. But inside me, I love God's rules, God's law.
00:14:02
Speaker
But another law is working inside me and it fights against me. And I feel like I'm in sin's jail. ah this is terrible. Who's going to save me?
00:14:14
Speaker
Oh, thank God, through Jesus, he will save me.
00:14:22
Speaker
That's the end of our reading today. But I'm going to circle back around to what we read in the beginning.
00:14:29
Speaker
It says, thank God, through Jesus, he will save me. And now, because we believe, it's just as if we never sinned. And now, we have shalom. Shalom.
00:14:43
Speaker
but god We are complete with God. We have wholeness and wellness with God. And this shalom is what comes to us through Jesus.
00:14:56
Speaker
who gives us shalom and peace, not as the world gives, but as he gives it. So the world is like our body. Our body may not have peace because like Paul said, it is fighting against us.
00:15:11
Speaker
It wants to do what is wrong. And we say, oh, I know I'm not supposed to do that, but I just, I really want to. and it's like your hand reaching out and you're like, so no, knock it off.
00:15:26
Speaker
And then we say, oh, we can't take captive every thought. We don't choose to do what is wrong. We choose to serve and obey God because our body has now become the house of the Lord.

Living with Shalom & Personal Stories

00:15:41
Speaker
So choose this day whom your spirit, your body, your house will serve. And this shalom that we have, it's not in our body because our body is fighting. It wants to do what is wrong.
00:15:55
Speaker
Where is this shalom? It is with our spirit. It is in our soul. We are well and whole in our soul. And it really reminded me of the hymn that was written, which I'm sure many, if not all of you, are already familiar with, where it is entitled, It Is Well With My Soul.
00:16:21
Speaker
this is what Paul is talking about. We're going to read that hymn in just a few minutes. But this is what Paul is talking about, that although we have troubles, we're It can still be well with our soul. We still have shalom.
00:16:36
Speaker
We have this because of Jesus. Jesus gave us this shalom. He gives it not as the world gives, but as God gives, as he gives.
00:16:49
Speaker
So we can choose not to do what is wrong. Are we always going to be perfect? No. But we don't have to give in We can fight it because and we have died to that old self that just says, i just wanna do what I wanna do.
00:17:08
Speaker
I'm gonna do me, you do you. ah That's the world's way, isn't it? And we are not of the world, are we? The world wants to say, you do you. And no, we are not to do us.
00:17:22
Speaker
We are to be like God, imitators of Jesus. We are to serve the Lord. As for me and my body, my house, I will serve the Lord.
00:17:39
Speaker
I love how God connected that for us today. And that's one of the things I love about this reading out of our Day by Day Kids Bible is that, remember, it's giving us the whole big picture so that we can see everything, how it is connected.
00:17:55
Speaker
Do we see how the old covenant is connected with the new covenant? God's promises that he made to us, that we talked about yesterday, are always fulfilled because God is always faithful.
00:18:06
Speaker
We see those coming true. And Paul is explaining what it looks like when God's promises are fulfilled. That we can have this shalom. We have it.
00:18:18
Speaker
Because we believe. So you have it. Don't let the enemy or the adversary or Satan tell you otherwise. Don't let the world tell you that you can do you.
00:18:30
Speaker
Serve the Lord. Do what God says is right. And even though we have this internal struggle, we still have shalom.
00:18:42
Speaker
All is well with our soul. Paul tells us today that we are happy when we have hard times because hard times teach us how to keep going.
00:18:55
Speaker
And when we keep going, that is how we grow. don't grow by quitting. We grow by keep going. And we become good people.
00:19:08
Speaker
And when we become good people, we have hope. And what is it that we're hoping in? Eternal life. We are working like a long race. Paul told us that this was a long race.
00:19:22
Speaker
It's a very long marathon. It's a lifelong marathon. We are running the good race. That crown that we are reaching, that we are striving for, that our goal is...
00:19:34
Speaker
is eternal life. And I love today's reminder of that in the in the hymn, It Is Well With My Soul, because the author of that hymn put all of these concepts together into that same hymn.
00:19:52
Speaker
And so we're going to read that today.
00:19:59
Speaker
this I'm trying to remember who this was written by. had It is well, it is well with my soul. but i will remind us who it is written by and after we have read it when p like a river attendeth my way when sorrow like sea billows roll whatever my lot thou hast taught me to say it is well it is well with my soul
00:20:32
Speaker
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blessed assurance control that Christ has regarded my helpless estate and hath shed his own blood for my soul.
00:20:50
Speaker
My sin, oh the bliss of this glorious thought, my sin, not part, act But in whole is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more.
00:21:04
Speaker
Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul. For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live.
00:21:16
Speaker
If Jordan above me shall roll, no pang shall be mine. For in death, as in life, thou wilt whisper thy peace to my soul.
00:21:32
Speaker
But Lord, tis for for thy coming we wait. The sky, not the grave, is our goal. O trump of the angel, O voice of the Lord, blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul.
00:21:52
Speaker
And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll, the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend.
00:22:07
Speaker
Even so, it is well with my soul. feel like that needs an amen. Amen. Amen. It is well with our souls.
00:22:21
Speaker
That is the shalom that Paul is talking about today and telling us that we have. Despite this internal struggle that we have against sin, despite difficulties and trials, it is well with our soul.
00:22:39
Speaker
And that hymn was written by Horatio Spafford. And he wrote that, by the way, in case you are unfamiliar. Right after he had just lost all of his financial investments because it was the day that he made these investments.
00:22:54
Speaker
One day prior to the big Chicago fire. And then he set his wife and his daughters to sail on a ship where he was... and to join them later, I believe, ah but one way or the other.
00:23:09
Speaker
They were on a ship, and it was wrecked, and he lost two of his daughters. in that shipwreck. And as it goes, as the story goes, as he was then setting sail to join his wife, who was saved in the shipwreck, who wrote to him and said, i was saved alone.
00:23:30
Speaker
So I don't know exactly um how they got reconnected to two of their ah daughters who ended up not ah being, who who ended up being saved, but not together with his wife.
00:23:42
Speaker
As he was crossing the Atlantic, And as he came to about the place where their ship had met wreck and they had died, he penned that hymn that in his loss, despite everything that was going on in his life, it was still well with his soul.
00:24:04
Speaker
He has God's shalom, the peace that was brought through Jesus.
00:24:12
Speaker
And so that is faith lived out. And that's what we were talking about yesterday, is living out our faith. Not just saying we have it, not just having it in our head as a knowledge, but living out our faith.

Faith in Practice & Final Blessing

00:24:25
Speaker
So let us be encouraged today to live out our faith by choosing to serve our Lord this day rather than the sinful nature that does not control us any longer.
00:24:38
Speaker
We can let it go. We can choose to do what is right because we have God's Holy Spirit inside of us who is telling us what is right. We can obey and serve him rather than serving sin because we cannot serve two masters.
00:24:55
Speaker
We cannot serve both the sinful self and do it our way and do it God's way. We have to choose one or the other. And as Jesus prayed and taught us how to pray with the Lord's prayer, he told us to pray for not our will, but God's will to be done.
00:25:13
Speaker
So I hope that you are encouraged, that you feel God's shalom in your soul today, that all would be well with you no matter what you have going on in God's shalom. And I hope that you have a very blessed day, whatever day you have gotten around to watching or listening our day-by-day reading today on November 11th.
00:25:33
Speaker
And I hope that you will consider reading those chapters yourself so that you can really get a full understanding of everything that Paul is teaching. I want you to be encouraged to head up your big Bible to read the book of Romans chapters 5, 6, and 7.
00:25:51
Speaker
so that you can have understanding of what it is that Paul is teaching us today about unity in God's spirit and shalom. So thank you for joining me, whether you are following along on that podcast or whether you are watching the video somewhere.
00:26:08
Speaker
Please also, if you don't mind, kindly click that light button there. it It really helps us to spread the word about reading God's word. That is my goal this year. And I'm really happy to see that God's word is going out.
00:26:21
Speaker
I want everybody to know about this shalom that God has given us through Jesus. And we have gifts that unless we ah claim them.
00:26:32
Speaker
we We don't use them. And so it's very important that we not only know these things, but when when we choose to claim them and say, I have this, then we are using them. It makes them, that's how that's how we live out our faith.
00:26:47
Speaker
That's how we live out what we are learning. That's how we are obeying. is by claiming this and remembering these things. In those hard moments, when we are struggling with the sinful self, we can remember, I am choosing to obey the Lord.
00:27:04
Speaker
I am not choosing to obey sin. I am not a slave to sin, but I choose to be a slave to God because being a slave actually sets us free and it grants us eternal life.
00:27:16
Speaker
And we are working toward that goal of eternal life. Not that we are earning it, but that we are choosing to live God's way. Not because we have to, because it's written down and somewhere on a book or on a list, but because God has put it in our hearts.
00:27:33
Speaker
And as we read yesterday, ah we or it doesn't it's not looking like a Christian or a believer that makes us a believer. It's having the heart of a believer.
00:27:46
Speaker
Paul is talking about being specifically a Jew, but it is transferable to us. We can't just look like a Christian or a believer. That's not what makes us a believer.
00:27:57
Speaker
It is actually believing and acting out our faith, having the heart for God that makes us real believers. So let us be real believers with Jesus's shalom and choose to obey him and God today.
00:28:13
Speaker
I hope that your house chooses to obey the Lord today. Have a very blessed day, and I look forward to our next daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:28:26
Speaker
Shalom Allahem. Peace be to you. Until then.
