Today's we will be reading the Book of Acts Chapters 14.

Today we will read about Paul and Barnabas continuing the job that God gave them to do. We will read about them experiencing difficulties with the Jewish people who turn people away from believing the truth, both Jewish people and Gentiles. Paul reminds us today that we will suffer difficulties for bringing the Good News to people. At the end of their mission Paul and Barnabas return to Antioch, "where they were entrusted to God for the work that was now complete" and praised God, telling the believers there about God's success in leading both Jewish people and Gentiles to follow Jesus.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about entrusting God to care for us as God sends us out to do the work He has prepared for us to do as well as remembering not to take personally any perceived failure or success in that work, but to give God the glory. We may be seed planters, we may be feeding God's lambs or His sheep, but whatever it is we are doing that God gives us to do, we are NOT failures (and neither is God!) We cannot always see someone come to be a follower and we want to remember that it does not mean that we were unsuccessful. It means we were potentially used for planting seeds about The Word. It is wonderful to see someone come to saving faith in Jesus, but the lack of seeing this happen does not mean that we (or God!) have failed! Let us be encouraged to thank God for the good work that He has given us to do and ENTRUST both ourselves and the people He brings us to, to God, as Paul and Barnabas showed us today.

I will also share some testimony as to how God used this daily application in my life just yesterday with a coworker, who being filled with God's Holy Spirit and joy, sought me out yesterday to tell me that He was reading the Bible and was loving it! Praise God! God is working in that man's heart and used me to help spread the word about reading God's Word! Thank you, God, for drawing that young man to you and allowing me to see the good work you have begun in him, as well as being able to give witness about that good work that I see!

Event Accessibility and Participation Guide

00:00:41
Speaker
Well, if you are following along on your bookmarking commitment calendar, go ahead and get your calendar out and whatever you're using to mark off your days, because we are about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:56
Speaker
If this is just popping up on your feed, thank you for staying with us. We have been reading the whole Bible this year using that day-by-day kids Bible written by Karen Henley. This is a little bit of a condensed version, so it does not include every single detail, but it does give us the whole Bible, the big story, I should say, yeah from Genesis to Revelation in chronological order so that we can have a deeper understanding of knowing God's big story for us.
00:01:27
Speaker
And we've been doing that since January 1st. So January 1st is going to be coming up again here real soon, just a couple of months. And if you have not been following along, I just want you to know that this event will be available for you wherever you are choosing to listen.
00:01:41
Speaker
Whether you are on Amazon Music or Apple Music, YouTube Music, Podbean, Podcast, Cast Off, Overcast, iHeartRadio, Pandora,
00:01:52
Speaker
or YouTube or YouTube Music or from my site. This event will be there for you, ready any time you are well ah ready to pick up with January 1st reading again.
00:02:03
Speaker
So if you feel like you are enjoying it this year, but you want to hear it all the way from the beginning, it'll be right there waiting for you.

Future Plans for a Full Bible Event

00:02:10
Speaker
And in case you are interested in using the calendar, i am going to continue to post the calendar each month.
00:02:16
Speaker
And I will potentially be hosting a second event next year with the full Bible version. I may be calling that second course or um second...
00:02:29
Speaker
um helping or something to that or going deeper rather I couldn't remember what else I was going to call it and going deeper or second course is this is a great appetizer for getting the big picture of the Bible but if you are looking for all of the details in God's Bible to go through the entire Bible in one year with me chronologically next year and then talk about it as well with some daily application then you're in the right place because I'm thinking about doing that in January so So if you don't mind, just give me a prayer periodically and just help me be guided by God's spirit if that is indeed what he is calling me to do.
00:03:08
Speaker
but thank you for that.

Miracles of Paul and Barnabas

00:03:10
Speaker
So we are going to be picking up in Acts chapter 14, as I mentioned, and we are reading currently about Paul and Barnabas. They have been traveling. They are on a job that God gave them to do.
00:03:24
Speaker
And we are going to be seeing the same thing happening here as what happened yesterday. And in fact, in our big Bible, it actually says the same thing happened that had previously happened.
00:03:37
Speaker
It says in Iconium, Paul and Barnabas went to the town's worship house and they did a good job of speaking. The Jews, many Jews and many people who were not Jews believed in Jesus.
00:03:52
Speaker
But some Jewish people would not believe. And they upset some of the people who were not Jews, the Gentiles or the Greeks, as it says in our big Bible. And the Jewish people put bad ideas into the minds of the other people.
00:04:07
Speaker
And the bad ideas were against Jesus's followers. So Paul and Barnabas stayed in the town for a while, and they talked boldly for God. God showed that their message was true, and he let them do wonders.
00:04:24
Speaker
Now, the other people could not agree with each other. Some people believed the Jews, and some people believed the ah Paul and Barnabas. And so some of the leaders and some of the other people, they made a plan.
00:04:37
Speaker
They planned to throw big stones at Paul and Barnabas and stone them to death.
00:04:43
Speaker
Paul and Barnabas found out about this plan, however, so they ran away to the city of Lystra, and they told God's good news there. And in Lystra, there was a man who could not walk.
00:04:56
Speaker
He had been that way since he was born. But as Paul talked, this man listened. And Paul looked right at the man, and Paul knew that the man believed that he could get well.
00:05:13
Speaker
So Paul said to him, stand up on your feet.
00:05:18
Speaker
The man jumped up and he started walking. The crowd saw this and they shouted, the gods are here.
00:05:29
Speaker
They are in human bodies. And they called Barnabas Zeus and they called Paul Hermes because Paul did most of the talking.
00:05:41
Speaker
Now there was a worship house for the fake god Zeus outside of the city. And the priests of Zeus brought bulls to the city gates. He brought circles of green leaves as well.
00:05:53
Speaker
Now the people wanted to offer gifts to worship Paul and Barnabas. But Paul and Barnabas heard about this and they ran out to the crowd and said to them, What are you doing?
00:06:07
Speaker
We are just people like you are. We are telling you good news. who Do not worship things that are not good for anything. Worship the living God.
00:06:20
Speaker
God made the earth and the sky and the sea, said Paul. He made everything in them. He used to let the nations do whatever they wanted.
00:06:31
Speaker
But God has shown who he is. He is kind to you. He gives you rain and and crops that grow. He gives you plenty of food.
00:06:43
Speaker
And he gives you joy in your hearts. Now Paul tried to stop the crowd, but he had a hard time, and people still wanted to offer worship gifts to him and Barnabas.

Facing Opposition and Perseverance

00:06:57
Speaker
Then some of the Jews came to town who were from Antioch and Iconium. They began talking to the crowd of people, and then soon the crowd of people began to believe those people, and they began to throw stones at Paul and Barnabas.
00:07:14
Speaker
they pulled him They pulled Paul out of the city, and they even thought that he was dead. But Jesus' followers came and stood around Paul.
00:07:25
Speaker
And then he got up, and he went back to the city. And the next day, Paul and Barnabas left. They went on to Derbe, and there they told the good news about Jesus.
00:07:40
Speaker
And lots of people believed. Then Paul and Barnabas went back to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch. And they helped Jesus' followers to be strong and to keep believing.
00:07:55
Speaker
People will give us a hard time, Paul said. And that is because we follow Jesus.
00:08:03
Speaker
Now Paul and Barnabas chose leaders at each church. And they went without food for a while to worship God. They were fasting. And they prayed for the new leaders.
00:08:15
Speaker
They trusted God to lead these men. Now at last, Paul and Barnabas sailed back to Antioch. And that's where they had started their trip to many different places.
00:08:29
Speaker
And that's where they had been entrusted to God's gracious care for the work that was now completed. So now their trip was over and the church people in Antioch got together.
00:08:43
Speaker
Paul and Barnabas told these followers of Jesus, they told the followers of Jesus what God had done. And they told how God had helped them teach people to believe in Jesus.
00:08:57
Speaker
And they said they had taught people who weren't Jews. Now Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch with Jesus' followers for a long time. And that is the end of our reading today.

Divine Guidance in Mission Success

00:09:13
Speaker
So we see that even though Paul and Barnabas are having difficulties because they are teaching about Jesus, they are still having success. Their teaching is fruitful.
00:09:27
Speaker
But our daily application here is that when when they first left, they entrusted God to care for them. During their mission.
00:09:38
Speaker
and here we see that as they were going back to each of the churches they were appointing leaders after they had prayed about this to see who god wanted to be appointed and they were entrusting these leaders to god's care they knew that god would take care them And it says in our big Bible here, I added that in because it's not included in our version.
00:10:03
Speaker
But when they returned, our big Bible says that this was where they had entrusted God to care for them, for the work that had now been completed.
00:10:16
Speaker
So we see that as they were first sent by God to do a job, that they then entrusted God to care for them during that mission.
00:10:27
Speaker
And then when they experienced success, they glorified God and they told the other believers what it was that God had done. It was not simply their success. It was God working through them.
00:10:41
Speaker
It was really God's success. God who is in charge of everything. And they were glorifying God to give him the credit For all of the many people who had come to believe in Jesus and were now starting to follow him.
00:10:56
Speaker
And that's our daily application today is that when God calls us to do something, we need to entrust ourselves to God's care because he will care for us.
00:11:09
Speaker
We need to look to God for his success in whatever job he gives us to do. It is not to our own glory. It is not something that we have decided to do. These are things that God has given us to do.
00:11:22
Speaker
And if we are faithful to carry out the work that God has given us to do, even if it doesn't look like it is successful, like they had difficulties and it might look like they're that they um weren't successful in a lot of ways.
00:11:38
Speaker
But they really were.

Personal Testimony and Faith Planting

00:11:40
Speaker
and it wasn't simply them who were successful. It was God who was successful. as this they put it in our big Bible, as many as who were inscribed in the book of life came to believe.
00:11:55
Speaker
We know from our reading earlier this year that not everybody is going to believe. Not everybody is called. But for those who were called, they believed.
00:12:07
Speaker
We are on the winning side. Those whom have been called and God sends us, he he is sending us to be messengers for those people. So we don't want to take it personally, either for what we perceive as failure or for what we may perceive as success.
00:12:26
Speaker
nothing is a failure when we obey we may simply be planting seeds and it may not be us whose job it is to water those seeds and to to grow them god will send other people potentially to do that or it may be that he just does it himself we won't know But it's always a joyful thing when we see immediate success, and we can be tempted to take that credit for ourselves.
00:12:54
Speaker
But again, it's not our credit that we need to be looking for, but rather for God's credit for what He is doing in people's lives. I was so excited ah to yesterday, I think it was, yes, when I was at work and ah one of the guys there that I have spoken to in the past, I had told him about my event and he wasn't really feeling led to listen per se. He did a little bit, but it wasn't really what he was looking to do.
00:13:25
Speaker
But he came up to me yesterday and he was so full of joy in the Holy Spirit. You could just see it. And he said to me, he said, Robin, he said, I wanted to show you what I am reading. And I said, what are you reading?
00:13:39
Speaker
And he pulled out his Bible. And he said ah he said, I went to the bookstore and I asked them to show me the Bibles department. And he picked out and a King James Version Bible.
00:13:53
Speaker
And I said, oh, George, you might have a little trouble with that one. He says, I like the challenge. I like reading the English. I really enjoy it. I said, well, you might want to look something up if you don't understand what you're reading, because you want to be sure you understand what you're reading.
00:14:11
Speaker
And he said, that's exactly what I have been doing. He said, if there is something I don't understand, i look it up. He said, but I'm really enjoying it. He said, I don't know where all I'm going to be reading. He said, I've read 40 pages so far and I just read some more on my break.
00:14:27
Speaker
He said, but I really wanted to show you. He said, I know you have your event where the Bible is is in a simpler, easier to understand version. He said, but I really wanted to read this version of the Bible.
00:14:40
Speaker
I said, God will bless you, George. I was so thrilled. It doesn't matter where you are reading the Bible. My goal is to spread the word about reading God's word.
00:14:52
Speaker
That is one of the big jobs that God has put on my heart to do. So it didn't matter that he wasn't listening to this event. What mattered is that he was reading God's word.
00:15:04
Speaker
God had used me to plant that seed. He knew which version of the Bible that he would be drawn to God knew. and so it's not a failure that that he didn't want to listen to this event.
00:15:18
Speaker
God had simply used me to plant a seed. And so that's all that mattered. God was successful. And I was just so excited to hear about that.

Community Engagement and Call to Action

00:15:30
Speaker
And he was so excited. And you could see God's Holy Spirit just giving him so much joy. And I said to him, I said, you are so filled with joy. I can see it. And he said, yes, I really am.
00:15:42
Speaker
so I was just so excited. And so I wanted to share that. And it just seemed to really fit in with today's reading. as i was as I was thinking about that today, of what occurred yesterday.
00:15:55
Speaker
And isn't that amazing how God works these events in on his timing so that I have examples. So that's how I like to share how God is using that daily application in my own life so that you can have example to see how it could potentially be applicable in your life.
00:16:12
Speaker
You might be telling somebody about reading the Bible or but spreading the word about reading God's word, telling people about Jesus. And it may seem like, oh, they didn't really respond or, oh, they didn't really do anything.
00:16:25
Speaker
But that is not the case. It may be that you were there to plant those seeds and God watered them and grew them. And we give the glory to God for that.
00:16:37
Speaker
