Today's we will read the Book of Acts Chapter 17 through Chapter 18:4.

Today we will read that once again God used the difficulty that Paul experienced to keep Paul on the move to different cities so he could tell more and more people about the Good News of Jesus. Today we will read about what happened when Paul got to Athens in Greece. Paul found that the people there were very religious and had idols set up for every false God they could think of, including an alter for an unknown God. Paul used this opportunity to enlighten the people there about the God they did not know, as well as Jesus! Paul told the people in Athens that Jesus would eventually judge the world for its sin and they should be sorry for doing wrong and accept Jesus forgiveness.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about Jesus' eventual return to judge the world. God does not desire anyone to die but wants EVERYONE to come to Him. Jesus told us that although we do not know the time of his return it will be like a servant who is waiting for his master to return from a wedding party- the servant thinks that the master is taking a very long time and so he does not do what he is supposed to be doing, and then when the master returns unexpectedly the servant, not being found doing the work he was supposed to be doing, will not have things go well for him. We need to be sure we are doing the good work God has given us to do by telling people about Jesus. One day Jesus WILL come back and we want as many people as possible to be saved from the judgement that He will eventually bring onto the world. Right now we are in the time of experiencing Jesus' forgiveness of sins and peace, but eventually, when He returns, it will be to judge the world for not choosing to believe in Him.

Paul’s Teachings in Athens

00:01:01
Speaker
We couldn't do it without you. Well, we are going to be picking up in the book of Acts chapter 17. And today we are going to be seeing ah what Paul is telling the people in Athens, which is in Greece, ah about a an unknown God.
00:01:22
Speaker
They have a place set up because they worship many gods. And they even have one set up for an unknown God, a God that they just don't know. And they want to be sure that they don't exclude anybody.

Paul’s Journey to Thessalonica and Berea

00:01:37
Speaker
So we're going to be seeing Paul address that today and letting them know, guess what? I'm going to be telling you about the unknown God that you don't know about. So let's pick up and let's check out Acts chapter 17. And this goes into the first part of chapter 18.
00:01:57
Speaker
So this is after Paul and Silas left the the area where they were. And it says that Paul and his friends went through other towns.
00:02:09
Speaker
They came to Thessalonica. This will be the same place where the letters to the Thessalonians are written to. And this town had a worship house for Jews.
00:02:20
Speaker
So Paul went on in. On three worship days, Paul told the people about God's word. Now, it actually says in our big Bible that he debated the word with them.
00:02:33
Speaker
So this means that it's a little stronger of a word. He is convincing people by the scriptures through showing them scripture fulfillment about Jesus fulfilling the Messiah prophecies.
00:02:49
Speaker
And it says he told them that Jesus had come to save them. And he said Jesus had died for them. And he told how Jesus came back to life again. Now some of the Jews believed and they went with Paul and Silas.
00:03:04
Speaker
A lot of Greeks believed too. And many important women believed too. Now some Jewish people, however, were angry as we usually see. Don't we see that oftentimes?
00:03:19
Speaker
And it's because they are jealous. Our big Bible tells us that they are jealous. Jealousy is very pervasive. When people try to show us that what we are doing is ah not right or wi that we are needing to change what we are doing and other people are following along, we can become jealous of those people that your friends used to follow.
00:03:44
Speaker
They did not want anyone to believe Paul and Silas. And these Jewish people went to the marketplace and they got some bad men to help them. And together they set up a crowd of people.
00:03:57
Speaker
And all the people ran to the house of a man whose name was Jason. They were looking for Paul and Silas. They had planned to pull them out into the crowd, but they didn't find Paul or Silas.
00:04:12
Speaker
So they pulled Jason and some other people out and they took them to the city leaders. They shouted, oh, and Silas made trouble all over the world.
00:04:23
Speaker
And now they've come to our city. And Jason let them stay at his house. They are breaking the law. They say there is another king.
00:04:34
Speaker
They call him Jesus. Now the crowd yelled when they heard this. And they made Jason and the others pay what is called bail to be set free from jail.
00:04:45
Speaker
And then they let them go. So that means that they still had a trial. They just had to pay bail. That was their security that they would come back. That's what bail is. So when it got

Paul in Athens and Corinth

00:04:57
Speaker
dark, Paul and Silas left and they went on to the town of Berea.
00:05:02
Speaker
People in Berea were nicer and they welcomed Paul and Silas with their message. They read God's word every day. They wanted to find out if what Paul was telling them was true.
00:05:17
Speaker
Now, lots of Jews believed there and many Greeks believed too. But the Jews in Thessalonica heard what Paul was. And so they heard also that he was still teaching about Jesus.
00:05:30
Speaker
So they went to Berea and they began to upset the crowds there. And right away, Jesus's followers sent Paul to the seaside. But Silas and Timothy stayed in Berea.
00:05:44
Speaker
Now the men who were with Paul took him to Athens. They escorted him. And Paul sent them back with a message for Silas and Timothy. It said that to for them to come to Paul as soon as they could.
00:05:58
Speaker
So while Paul waited for Silas and Timothy in Athens, he was upset to see so many idols in that city. So he went to the city's worship house.
00:06:09
Speaker
And there he talked to the Jews about it. He talked to the Greeks who believed in God too. And he went to the marketplace every day and he talked with whoever was there. Now there were some wise thinkers in Athens and they began to talk with Paul.
00:06:28
Speaker
Some said, he doesn't make any sense. What is he trying to say? And other people said, he seems to be talking about gods of other nations.
00:06:41
Speaker
And the reason that they said that was because Paul was talking about Jesus and he was telling how Jesus had come back to life.
00:06:50
Speaker
Then they took Paul to a special meeting. They said to him, tell us what this new teaching is. These are strange ideas and we want to know about what it all means.
00:07:02
Speaker
Now, the people of Athens, they spent a lot of their time talking about new ideas all the time. So Paul stood up and he said to them, I see that you think about the spirit world.
00:07:17
Speaker
In our big Bible, it says you are all very religious. I walked around your city and I looked carefully at what you worship. And I even found an altar with a different sign.
00:07:31
Speaker
It says to a God we don't know. So I'm going to tell you about this God that you do not know. God made the world and everything in it, Paul told them.
00:07:45
Speaker
He is the Lord of heaven ah and earth. And he does not live in houses built by people and people do not bring him things that he needs. Instead, he gives people what they need and he gives life and breath to everything.
00:08:07
Speaker
Now, God made all the nations. from one man, said Paul. And he planned for people to live all over the world. He planned when and where they would live.
00:08:20
Speaker
Now God did this so that people would look for him. And he wanted people to reach out to him. And he knew that they would find him.
00:08:33
Speaker
Paul continued, God is not far from any of us. And that is because we live in him and we move in him and we are alive because of him.
00:08:47
Speaker
And some of your writers say it this way. We are his children. We are God's children, said Paul. And so we should not think that God is made of gold. or He is not made of silver. he is not made of stone.
00:09:04
Speaker
is not a figure that people can make. God used to let people get away with this foolish thinking, said Paul. But now he tells everyone everywhere to change.
00:09:20
Speaker
He tells them to be sorry for doing wrong because he has planned for a day when he will judge the world. And he has chosen the one who will do this judging.
00:09:34
Speaker
He has shown who this is by bringing him back to life. Now, some people laughed when they heard about coming back to life, but some said, we want to hear more.
00:09:48
Speaker
And a few people believed in Paul. They believed Paul, not believed in him. Sorry about that. Then Paul left Athens and he went on to Corinth, which is the name of the place where he wrote the letters to the Corinthians.

The Message of Worship and Sacrifice

00:10:04
Speaker
And he met a Jew there whose name was Aquila. And this man had lived in Rome with his wife, Priscilla, but they had needed to move to Corinth because the ruler of Rome had told the Jewish people that they needed to all leave his city.
00:10:20
Speaker
So Paul went to visit Aquila and Priscilla. They were in the trade of making tents and Paul did too. He made tents. So Paul stayed and worked with them.
00:10:32
Speaker
And he went to the city's worship house every day. And he tried to get the Jews and the Greeks to believe in Jesus. And that is the end of our reading today.
00:10:47
Speaker
Don't you love how God used the opportunity for, again, for Paul to have to leave the area and he sent him on to Athens? And don't you love how Paul used the opportunity to see and look and he found Jesus?
00:11:02
Speaker
an altar to an unnamed God. And so he used what they had available. there he He found an inn. They were already aware that there may be a God that they are unaware of.
00:11:16
Speaker
And so Paul used that opportunity to say, let me tell you about this God that you don't know of yet. And then he began to tell them about how God had made everybody from one person and all nations And he explained how people moved around the world. i love Paul's explanation. He has such understanding from the Holy Spirit.
00:11:40
Speaker
And this is going to be our daily application today. When God made us, he made us with an inborn desire.
00:11:51
Speaker
The big word for that is innate. He gave us an inborn desire to worship. He wanted us to look for him. And so what we see all around the world and historically is that people are making up something to worship. They want someone, something to worship.
00:12:13
Speaker
But God built us with this desire and he gave us himself to fulfill that desire. When we choose to worship and believe and put our faith in other things, ultimately, every one of those times is unsatisfactory. They are unfulfilling.
00:12:33
Speaker
They cannot satisfy us. However, once we turn to and believe in God, he is what satisfies our desires.
00:12:44
Speaker
He gives us water that will never run out so that we're never thirsty again. Although I do always think that I am so hungry for more and more of God's word. But he he gives us himself.
00:12:57
Speaker
And As Paul stated, God is not someone that we should build a house for because we are meant to bring him things.
00:13:09
Speaker
Instead, God created us in his image. So we are the children of God. and so we are not to be thought of as being made out of gold or silver or stone.
00:13:23
Speaker
They are not man-made images. But God created us. and then fulfills us by giving us what we need. And this is consistent with what Jesus taught us and said, don't be nervous and worried about everything.
00:13:37
Speaker
Your heavenly father made you and he knows what we need. He knows what you need. We first look to him then he will provide what we need.
00:13:49
Speaker
and We don't need to provide for God.

Grace and the Coming Judgment

00:13:52
Speaker
we don't need to bring him things and in order to provide for him. We bring him ourselves. We are what is called a living sacrifice.
00:14:01
Speaker
We are to exchange what we want to do and give him ourselves so that we then live how he wants us to live in the spirit. But we are not providing for God's needs.
00:14:14
Speaker
He's not looking for us to bring him food. We did used to have the law for grain offerings and things of that nature. But God has fulfilled that in Jesus.
00:14:27
Speaker
And I love how Paul explained that God, let's see, God used to let people get away with this foolish thinking of making idols and things of that nature. And he let the nations get away with it. And he just simply told his Jewish people not to become like them, to be separate from them.
00:14:50
Speaker
But now God desires for all people to come to him. And so he's no longer tolerating this foolish behavior. He has indeed set a date of judgment and nobody knows that date, not even Jesus, the son.
00:15:06
Speaker
But Jesus tells us that when he comes back, that is the time when he has been given the authority to judge the nations. So this time that's in between Jesus's crucifixion in thecension and and the time that he returns This is the time that God is giving grace to let the whole world have opportunity to have time to come to him before that time of judgment.
00:15:32
Speaker
And so because God does not desire that anybody should die, but that all should come to him. That is where we come in and we are meant to spread the word about reading God's word.
00:15:44
Speaker
We are to tell people how to become followers of Jesus. We are to explain to them. That now God wants us to be sorry for the way we behave. That's called repentance for sins.
00:15:56
Speaker
And that he is so faithful to forgive us for that. And so that is our daily application today, is to remember that eventually that ticking time clock will run out and the world will be judged.
00:16:10
Speaker
At the end, everybody will be either written in the book of life or will not be written in God's book of life. And so we want to encourage everybody we know, everybody that God puts in our path to come to him, to receive Jesus's forgiveness, because at some point the world will be judged by Jesus.
00:16:32
Speaker
Right now, he did not come to judge the earth. He came to bring forgiveness. But in the end, we are told in Revelation that he will eventually judge the earth.
00:16:44
Speaker
And of course, there are other writings that tell us that that the Savior will judge the world at that time. So i just hope that you feel encouraged that we have a mission to do, that we want to let other people know before the time comes.
00:17:03
Speaker
We know that every day we are one day closer and it may not come within our generation. It may come to the next generation. Nobody knows. But we want to continue to tell people about it.
00:17:16
Speaker
Because people have children. And then so the people that we help bring God's kingdom to, they may have children and then teach their children who will go out and tell other people.
00:17:29
Speaker
Or that they may themselves may be there at the time of God's judgment so that they will have already accepted and and be saved. And we just don't know when that will be. But we know that there needs to be continual growth in God's kingdom.
00:17:44
Speaker
And there will

Final Encouragement and Farewell

00:17:45
Speaker
be. And that is because we are doing the job that we are called to do. And Jesus tells us that it will be good for us to be found doing what we are supposed to do when he does come back.
00:17:58
Speaker
He said it's like a servant who is waiting for his master to come home from a long event, a wedding. And his master is out and late. And so the servant says, oh, the master is taking a very long time to come.
00:18:15
Speaker
will
00:18:17
Speaker
Go to sleep. I don't need to do anything. instead, the servant is not doing what he's supposed to be doing. And when the master comes home and finds that his s servant is not doing the work, he says it will not be going good for him.
00:18:33
Speaker
So we are God's servants. Jesus also says we are now called his friends because now we know everything. But we are meant to be doing the good work that God has for us to do.
00:18:44
Speaker
And so that is our daily application is that we may be found doing that. because at some point Jesus will return to judge the earth. Now I have just realized that this recording will sound a little different than the normal clarity that it normally has.
00:19:01
Speaker
And that's because I disconnected my microphone through the USB port and ah just realized I never took out that USB plug in my portable drive and put back my microphone.
00:19:18
Speaker
So we are going to have a little harder. It's going to sound a little different.
00:19:27
Speaker
does. So now it will sound a little bit better. So I apologize for the the different sound in my microphone. ah But thank you for your grace on that.
00:19:39
Speaker
Well, thank you so much for joining me for today's daily reading for October 25th out of our Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. As always, i would like to please encourage you to click that light button so that we can spread the word about reading God's word because eventually the time will arrive and God will return.
00:19:59
Speaker
Jesus will return to judge the earth. I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you get around to watching or listening to today's event. And I hope that you are hungry for more of God's word to continue with us tomorrow, whatever day you get around to listening or watching that one.
00:20:16
Speaker
And until you do, I'll be right here waiting for you. And I hope to see you or here be here for you to hear again tomorrow. Have a great day and a blessed day.
