Today's we will read the Book of Acts Chapter 15:36 through Chapter 16.

Today we will read that God gave Paul a vision to go to Macedonia to preach the Good News. While there he and Silas were accused of teaching things that were unlawful for Roman Citizens to do, which resulted in Paul and Silas being beaten and thrown into jail without a trial  first. This led to the opportunity for Paul and Silas to witness to the jailer and his whole family, resulting in lives being saved for Jesus! Hallelujah!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how God works good into absolutely EVERY  circumstance to further His Kingdom! We will talk about how Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers and falsely accused, landing him in jail, which ultimately gave him the opportunity to be 2nd in charge of all of Egypt, saving his family from the famine! He later told his brothers, "What you intended for evil, God intended for good." I will also share my testimony about a recent event where God used an auto accident to bring good. We are encouraged, dear brothers and sisters, to always ask God to show us the good that He will work into every situation so that we might glorify Him and be His witnesses, thereby offering encouragement to even more people to have faith in God always and look to Him whenever we experience any kind of difficult situation.

This will be my first year, too.

Transition from Galatians to Acts

00:02:30
Speaker
All righty. Well, we are going to begin today with the book of Galatians. No, no, we finished the book of Galatians. Sorry. the book We're back to the book of Acts, which again was written by Matthew, and it is picking up in chapter 16.
00:02:45
Speaker
Our Bible that we are following along with, if you are unfamiliar, is written chronologically. So what that means is sometimes events happen more than once in the Bible, and the books in the Bible are not put together chronologically.
00:03:00
Speaker
They are put together ah in the Old Testament, the Old Covenant. We have the books of the law, we have the prophets, and we have the Psalms. And they're written at different times.
00:03:12
Speaker
And then we have, of course, the Gospels. And each set of the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, tells an accounting. But sometimes the events are recorded in more than one location.
00:03:26
Speaker
So what it does when we read this Bible chronologically is that this combines all of the events. and it puts it into one continuous timeline so that we don't have to be confused about what happened when.
00:03:40
Speaker
So this helps us to understand the continuity, the fluidity of God's word, and then we can see the whole story from that perspective. And that's what I love about this version.
00:03:53
Speaker
This version doesn't give us every single little detail. What it does is it sticks to the story as so that we are not missing what is going on in the big picture. So for instance, it didn't give us um the chapters with all of the old covenant laws that we are no longer bound by.
00:04:10
Speaker
Not because it wasn't important to write them down, but because it wasn't important in our overall story. to to know and read every single Levitical law that was given to the people by God through Moses.
00:04:26
Speaker
And i love that because it it gives us everything that we need for the most part. And then I read the big Bible each day as well. And I pick out additional details sometimes that I think are important to include in our daily reading.
00:04:42
Speaker
So you will have some times where I will include some verses or some additional words that we don't see if you are following along in that day by day kids Bible. Well, here we go.
00:04:54
Speaker
We are picking up in chapter 16. Actually, it's the very end of chapter 15.

Paul's Mission and Roman Citizenship

00:05:00
Speaker
And then it goes through the book of ah the the chapter of And here we're going to be seeing that Paul is a Roman citizen.
00:05:11
Speaker
And that's important because it's it's not our overall daily application, but this is where we start to see that Paul is using who he is. God uses the circumstances that we are in and our experiences in life to help us further his kingdom.
00:05:30
Speaker
He shows us how to be who we are for him. And so today ah we're going to be seeing that Paul is is declaring that he is a Roman citizen and we're going to be seeing what he does with that information.
00:05:44
Speaker
And we're going to be seeing later on, as we read further throughout the rest of the new covenant letters, what Paul is able to do because of that. It gains him access to areas where he would not typically get to go because he has rights.
00:05:59
Speaker
as a Roman citizen, that the other and people who were inhabitants of the area, ah nationals, I would even say, but they were not Roman citizens.
00:06:10
Speaker
And so that gave them rights under Roman law. So here we go. ah Paul has just finished his letter to the Galatians. Now some time passed, and one day Paul said to Barnabas, Let's go back.
00:06:25
Speaker
Let's go back to the towns where we taught God's word. Let's visit our friends there and see how they're doing. Now Barnabas wanted to take John Mark too, but Paul did not think that that was wise because John Mark had left them once before to return to his hometown.
00:06:44
Speaker
And he hadn't kept working with them. So Paul and Barnabas began to fuss with one another over this and they couldn't agree. and so they just simply chose not to go with one another.
00:06:56
Speaker
Instead, Barnabas took John Mark with him and they went on to Cyprus and Paul chose to take Silas with him and they they began to travel together.
00:07:08
Speaker
Now Paul and Silas went to many places. They helped Jesus' followers believe more strongly. On one trip, Paul and cyrus Silas went back to Lystra, and there was a follower of Jesus there.
00:07:24
Speaker
His name was Timothy. This is the same Timothy that we will read about later in in some other letters. Now, his mother was Jewish, and she believed in Jesus, and his father was a Greek.
00:07:40
Speaker
Everyone said good things about Timothy, so Paul wanted to take him on the trip too. So they traveled from town to town and they told people what the leaders in Jerusalem had said.
00:07:53
Speaker
And so the people's faith grew stronger. And many more people believed in Jesus. Paul and his friends traveled throughout Galatia.
00:08:05
Speaker
The Holy Spirit would not let them teach in Asia. So they ended up in a town called Tros.

Paul's Encounters: Lydia and the Slave Girl

00:08:12
Speaker
And that night, Paul had a dream, a vision.
00:08:17
Speaker
he saw a man from Macedonia in this dream. The man said to Paul, come to Macedonia, come and help us. So right away, Paul and his friends got ready to go.
00:08:31
Speaker
They knew that God wanted them to teach in Macedonia. So they sailed across the street, the the sea, and they traveled to Philippi or Philippi.
00:08:44
Speaker
This would be the same area where we see the book of Philippians. Now, Philippi was a place where some Roman people had come to live. It was what was called a Roman colony.
00:08:58
Speaker
It was the main city there in Macedonia. And Paul and his friends stayed there for a while. Now, the worship day came and Paul and his friends went out of the city to the river.
00:09:11
Speaker
and they thought that they would find a place of prayer there. Some women were there by the river, so Paul and his friends sat down. They started talking to the women.
00:09:24
Speaker
One woman was named Lydia. She sold purple cloth, and she was a worshiper of God. Now, God worked in Lydia's heart, and she was ready to hear about Jesus.
00:09:40
Speaker
She believed what Paul said. So Lydia and her family were baptized. Lydia asked Paul and his friends to stay at her house, and so they did.
00:09:53
Speaker
Now, one day, Paul and his friends went to the prayer place, and on their way, slave girl met them. A bad spirit lived in her, and it made her able to say what was going to happen.
00:10:06
Speaker
She was a fortune teller. Our big Bible says she had a spirit of divination.
00:10:14
Speaker
This girl belonged to her masters, and she made a lot of money for them. People paid to find out what would happen to them. We still do that today.
00:10:25
Speaker
People will set up shops and say that they are psychics. That is what we might call fortune tellers today.
00:10:33
Speaker
The slave girl followed Paul and his friends. She shouted out to others, These men serve the Most High God! They can tell you how to be saved!
00:10:45
Speaker
And she did this day after day. At last, Paul had enough. He turned around to her and he talked to the bad spirit.
00:10:58
Speaker
Come out of this girl. I tell you to do this in Jesus's name. And right away, the spirit left her.

Imprisonment and Miraculous Release

00:11:08
Speaker
Now the girl's owners, however, they did not like this because now they could not make money from her fortune telling.
00:11:15
Speaker
So they took Paul and Silas to the city leaders and they complained. The owners of the slave girl said, these men are Jewish and they are saying things that upset the people in our city.
00:11:26
Speaker
And they tell us to do things that Romans shouldn't do. And it's against our law. And there was a crowd of people. So they turned against Paul and Silas too.
00:11:39
Speaker
The Roman leaders had Paul and Silas beaten with rods. They were beaten very badly, and then the leaders had them put in jail. The jailer was told to guard the two men very carefully.
00:11:54
Speaker
So the jailer put Paul and Silas inside the jail, and he chained their feet in holes on a wooden board called stocks.
00:12:06
Speaker
At midnight, Paul and Silas were praying. They were singing songs to God, and the other people who had been put in jail were listening.
00:12:18
Speaker
When all of a sudden the earth began to shake hard, the floors of the jail shook, and everybody's chains fell off.
00:12:30
Speaker
Now the jailer woke up and he saw that the jail doors were open. He thought the people in the jail had gotten out. So he pulled out his sword. He was scared and he was getting ready to kill himself because at that time, if if the people had escaped, he would be held responsible and he would have been put to death.
00:12:51
Speaker
But Paul called out, don't hurt yourself. We are all here. Now the jailer called for someone to bring lights in, and then he ran into the room where Paul was.
00:13:02
Speaker
He fell down in front of Paul and Silas. He was shaking. The jailer took Paul and Silas out of jail and said to them, "'How can I be saved?' "'Believe in Jesus,' they said, "'and then you will be saved.
00:13:21
Speaker
"'And your family can be saved too.'" And Paul and Silas told him the good news about Jesus. Everyone in his house listened.
00:13:34
Speaker
The jailer washed the two men's hurt places, and then right away he and his family were baptized. The jailer took Paul and Silas into his house.
00:13:46
Speaker
He brought food for them to eat. He was full of joy. he and his whole family Now believed in God. Now day came and the leaders sent officers to the jailer and they ordered, let those men go.
00:14:06
Speaker
So the jailer went to Paul and told Paul, the leaders say that you and Silas can go. leave now and go in peace. But Paul told the officers,
00:14:21
Speaker
The leaders beat us. Everyone saw it. And they put us in jail. But we are Roman citizens. That is no way to treat Roman citizens.
00:14:33
Speaker
Do they think we're going to go quietly? Do they think that they want to be able to send us away secretly? Our big Bible says, no, they will have to come and take us out.
00:14:48
Speaker
So the officers went back and they told the leaders what Paul had said. The leaders were shocked. They didn't know that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.
00:15:01
Speaker
So the leaders came right away to try and make peace. And they apologized to Paul and Silas. And they helped the two men out of jail. And then the leaders asked the men to leave their city.
00:15:16
Speaker
So Paul and Silas went back to Lydia's house where they met with Jesus's followers there. And they cheered them up. And then they left the city. And that is the end of our reading to- today.

Reflections on Life and Faith

00:15:34
Speaker
We might not think that where we come from will have ah an impact when we are preaching the good news about the kingdom. But the thing is, is God uses all of our experiences, even our upbringing and where we are from to help us to reach people. We just don't know what he's going to do with these things until they happen.
00:15:57
Speaker
We just don't know. So in this case, Paul and Silas are both Roman citizens, and that means that they had a right to a trial before they were given judgment.
00:16:09
Speaker
Now, here in the United States and in along most places of the world, not all, but in most places of the world, that's become a rather common right, is that people have a right to a trial but by a jury of their peers before they are given any kind of a punishment.
00:16:24
Speaker
And here in the United States, we also have a law that says that you are presumed innocent until you are proven guilty in a court of law. But this was not the case for everybody in Paul's time.
00:16:37
Speaker
Only Roman citizens, which you could only be either by being born into it or you had to pay for it. So Paul, however, was born into it.
00:16:48
Speaker
And God was going to use this gift to help him reach people later on even. So we see also here that God's always working good into everything.
00:17:03
Speaker
God had told them in a vision to go to Macedonia. Now it might not seem like that's a wonderful thing for them to go and be beaten, But he used that.
00:17:14
Speaker
He used that to lead him to the jailer. And then he would Paul and Silas were able to witness to the people who were inside the jail, but also to the jailer and all of his family.
00:17:29
Speaker
And now people who did not believe in God, not only believed in God, but they believed in Jesus. God can use everything. Even in the past, in the old covenant, we saw Joseph, for instance.
00:17:44
Speaker
Joseph had not committed any crime, but he was falsely accused of committing crimes. He was sold into slavery by his very own brothers. And he said it wonderfully when he met his brothers again years and years later, when he was in charge second in command of Egypt.
00:18:03
Speaker
He said to his brothers, he said, what you meant for evil. God meant for good. So as we get upset as people today even can seem to sabotage us or say bad things about us and lies, and they cause us even potentially to lose our jobs or to cause trouble for us in different areas, whatever it is, none of these things seems good at the time.
00:18:30
Speaker
But God is using every circumstance to bring us to where we need to be in order to advance his kingdom. And so we need to use these things as our encouragement to ask God to show us, God, I don't know what you're going to do with this, but have faith.
00:18:49
Speaker
I believe that based upon what I have seen in the past with faith, How you used Joseph's situation, how you used Paul and Silas in different situations, even Jesus where he was put to death, it doesn't seem like a good thing.
00:19:05
Speaker
But everything was for good. There is nothing impossible for our God. So we just need to have faith and remember that God is working through everything.
00:19:18
Speaker
And these are just the circumstances that are needed in order to move us into where we need to be in order to affect change, to bring the kingdom and to to further God's kingdom.
00:19:33
Speaker
So I hope that you will be encouraged today that no matter what happens, whether it's even getting into an auto accident, my husband was hit by ah another driver ah about three and a half months ago now.
00:19:46
Speaker
And that's certainly not a good thing. And it totaled the car out. But God used that to um bring me into contact with the other person that that this person had run into as well, their car.
00:20:03
Speaker
And ah it was not their fault either. And um guess what? That young woman is a believer. And so I was able to help her with different things when because she is young and she didn't have a lot of experience in this department.
00:20:21
Speaker
God uses our experiences to to bring other people into our path so that we can walk them through it. That's how discipleship works. We are to teach people how to follow Jesus.
00:20:34
Speaker
And we can teach people how to get through difficult situations in that same way. So I was able to help her. And she was very grateful that that God had protected her in that incidence, as well as her passenger, as well as my husband.
00:20:51
Speaker
For as bad as the car was completely totaled, God protected him. So and then multiple things occurred that actually turned into a blessing. It's just too many to list here today.
00:21:04
Speaker
So it may seem like that was a terrible circumstance. But right away, I was actually but um i could see God gave me the ability to see all the good that he was doing, not all the good, some of the good. And then later on, I would see other good coming from it.
00:21:20
Speaker
And so just have faith and ask God to show you, to open your eyes and say, God, I believe that you will work good into this. Please open my eyes and allow me to see the good that you will work so that I may glorify you and witness to others what you give me the opportunity to see.
00:21:40
Speaker
That's what witnessing is. It's to have experiences with God and then tell people about it. It's not simply to say, let me tell you about Jesus, the good news. Our witnessing is what God explained in the old covenant. If you've been with us for a while, you may remember. And if you have not been with us, then you won't might necessarily have ever heard this.
00:22:01
Speaker
But God said that we are to be his witnesses. He gives us experiences. And then we are to glorify God by sharing those experiences with the other people.
00:22:13
Speaker
And that's why he has given me the name Obedient Witness. I love to be God's witness, to share with you the different experiences, like with the car ah being total and other examples, so that you can be encouraged to know that it's not just me that God will work good into my situations.
00:22:35
Speaker
It's for you.
00:22:38
Speaker
So thank you for following along. I hope that you feel God has lit your light today. I hope that you feel encouraged in our daily application. And I hope that you will um pray for God to open your eyes, no matter what the difficult situation is, to have him show you what good he is going to work through it. Because I guarantee you he will.
00:22:57
Speaker
Our God doesn't let anything go without good working into it all the time. All the time. God works the best into everything that happens.

Conclusion and Call to Action

00:23:06
Speaker
So please, when you are finished watching or listening, I would like to encourage you to also click that light button.
00:23:13
Speaker
Click that thumbs up. It looks like a heart. It looks like a share. Let's share the good word about reading God's word. Let's spread that word. Let's hit the subscribe button or the follow.
00:23:25
Speaker
Not for me, but because what it does is when we see, we have a tendency to want to follow like sheep. So if we see that there are x number of subscribers, then we may say, oh, well, this looks like a lot of people are following this along. I'll do that too.
00:23:40
Speaker
So we can be a little bit sheepish in that effect, in that way. And so what that does is that that encourages other people to hear God's message. And that is what we're doing. We're spreading the word about reading God's word.
00:23:54
Speaker
So thank you for doing that. And I hope you have a fantastic day. wherever day you get around to watching or listening this October 24th reading from the Day by Day Kids Bible.
00:24:06
Speaker
And I hope that you are hungry for more of God's word and come back tomorrow for the next day's reading out of our Day by Day Kids Bible. And until then, I hope that you are lighting that light everywhere you go and spreading God's word.
00:24:19
Speaker
Have a great day. See you next time.
