Today's we will read the Book of Acts Chapter 18:5-11 and 1 Thessalonians Chapters 1 through 4.

Today we will read about Paul's gratitude for the faith of those living in Thessalonica and his encouragement to them to keep growing. Paul is greatly encouraged by the fact that other people speak so well of the Thessalonians' faith, imitation of Godly believers, and their love for both one another as well as all of those living in Macedonia. Lastly, we will read about Paul's encouragement to not be sad about people dying, as we will all be resurrected when Jesus returns- first those who are already dead and then those of us who are alive will join Jesus in the Rapture at His return.

In our discussion for daily application we will be encouraged to also keep imitating Jesus and mature believers so that we can show others what Jesus looks like. Jesus taught us that the world will know we are His followers if we love one another. He also taught us that as we bear fruit God will prune us so that we bear even MORE fruit! So we are encouraged to keep growing and providing good examples of God's love to the world around us so that when others see us they may imitate us as well, rather than imitate bad behaviors. It is my prayer for you today that you continue to grow in loving others and imitating Jesus, just as Paul encouraged the Thessalonians to do in today's reading.

Paul in Corinth and Letters to Thessalonians

00:01:50
Speaker
We are going to be picking up with a lot of reading today.
00:01:54
Speaker
We are covering the book of Acts chapter 18. And while Paul is in Corinth, he is writing his first letter to the Thessalonians, which we read about the other day where he had gone to Thessalonica.
00:02:10
Speaker
So we are going to be seeing first God encouraging Paul with a vision to keep him going. And next we're going to be seeing in Paul's letter to the Thessalonians, encouragement and encouragement.
00:02:28
Speaker
Praise for them because they have not only received God's word, but they are growing. And that is awesome to see. We are encouraged to keep growing all the time. And we are never to stop growing, never to stop improving.
00:02:44
Speaker
And we are growing in God's love and knowledge, and it helps us to be what we call more mature believers so that we can bear even more fruit. And Jesus taught us that we are meant to bear fruit.
00:02:57
Speaker
And even those branches that bear fruit, God prunes so that we will grow even more fruit. And that is what Paul is encouraging the people in Thessalonians today.
00:03:10
Speaker
you know, one of the things he is encouraging them about today is to keep on loving people. And the other thing is that he is telling them that.
00:03:26
Speaker
He is confirming with them that they are imitating God's believers. So we are meant to first imitate Jesus. And as we imitate Jesus, we've talked throughout the year, if you have been here for a little while, about being good examples. Because people will follow our examples, whether they are good examples or whether they are bad examples.
00:03:49
Speaker
And we want to provide good examples for people to follow so that when people see us, they are encouraged to

Imitation and Example in Faith

00:03:57
Speaker
imitate us. So if we are imitating Jesus,
00:04:00
Speaker
then we are encouraging and teaching others how to imitate and follow Jesus as well. So that when they see us, they will see him and then they will see how to behave and they will imitate that. And that is what Paul is saying that the Thessalonians are great at doing, that they are imitating Jesus and the other followers. So they are providing a good example for those around them.
00:04:27
Speaker
And that will be our encouragement today too. is for us to continue to imitate Jesus so that we can be examples. And that's how we are the light of the world.
00:04:40
Speaker
So I just wanted us to give us that heads up so that we can understand what we are reading when we get there. And that will help us to have an easier time, I hope. Here we go.
00:04:52
Speaker
So at last, Silas and Timothy came to where Paul was. Remember, Paul had sent word for them to join him in Athens as soon as possible. So now Silas and Timothy came.
00:05:04
Speaker
And Paul worked hard at teaching. Remember, previously he had been building tents with Aquila and Priscilla.
00:05:14
Speaker
So he kept trying to tell the Jewish people about Jesus. And he told them that God had sent Jesus to save them. But the Jewish people there would not believe.
00:05:26
Speaker
They started being mean to Paul. So Paul said to them, you are to blame and I have done what I could. From now on, I'll teach people who are not Jewish, meaning the Gentiles or the Greeks.
00:05:40
Speaker
So Paul left the city's worship house, and he went next door. A man named Justice lived there. He believed in God, but he was not Jewish. And Crispus was the leader at that city's worship house.
00:05:55
Speaker
And he and his family believed in Jesus. And many others believed too. They were baptized. One night, God talked to Paul in a dream.
00:06:08
Speaker
Don't be afraid. God said, talk to these people. Don't be quiet. I am with you. Nobody will hurt you.
00:06:20
Speaker
I have lots of people here in this city.
00:06:24
Speaker
So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, and he taught the people God's word. It's not included in our version, but it actually talks in our big Bible more about ah God's encouragement where God had said not to be afraid.
00:06:42
Speaker
So Paul had actually been taken in front of the what they call the judgment seat. And he had been accused of teaching things that were contrary to the Torah, the law in the Bible.
00:06:56
Speaker
and ah the but And it says in our big Bible that just as Paul was about to open his mouth, the leader said that this was not something of his concern that he wanted to judge against. He said, if you were accusing him of a high crime or something violent, he said, then I would listen to this. But this pertains to your own rules of your religion.
00:07:16
Speaker
And so I don't want to be involved in that. And so you see, Paul was not ah continued to be taken in front of what they called the judgment seat when they tried to take him to court and accuse him of a crime.
00:07:30
Speaker
So God was right. He said, he would say, don't be afraid. i am with you and nobody will hurt you. And that's exactly what happened. So I just wanted to glorify God in that by making sure we included that in today's reading.
00:07:45
Speaker
So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, and he taught the people God's word.

The Thessalonians' Influence

00:07:51
Speaker
Now from Corinth, Paul wrote some letters to Jesus' followers.
00:07:57
Speaker
And this is where we begin the book of Thessalonians, the letter of Thessalonians, I should say, chapter one. And we will read the first four chapters out of five for the ah letter to the Thessalonians, the first one.
00:08:12
Speaker
To the followers of Jesus in Thessalonica. We pray for God's kind love and peace to be with you. We always thank God for you, and we remember the work that you have done for Him.
00:08:28
Speaker
You were able to work because you believed in God, and you wanted to work because you love God, and you kept working because you hope in Jesus.
00:08:41
Speaker
God loves you and he chose you. We know this because of how our good news came to you. It didn't just come with words. It came with power.
00:08:54
Speaker
It came with the Holy Spirit. We lived near you so we could teach you. And you learned to live like us and like Jesus.
00:09:06
Speaker
You had hard times, but you were glad to welcome the message. The Holy Spirit helped you to be glad. And you showed others what following Jesus is like.
00:09:21
Speaker
People everywhere hear about your faith in God. We don't need to tell them about it. They tell us. People tell how good you were to us.
00:09:32
Speaker
They tell how you left idols. They tell how you began worshiping the true God. And they say that you are waiting for Jesus to come back.

Reassurance about Resurrection

00:09:44
Speaker
We were brave when we told you the good news. Many people tried to stop us. we But we weren't trying to trick you. We weren't after more and more things for ourselves.
00:09:56
Speaker
It's not people that we are trying to make happy. We are trying to make God happy. He sees what is in our hearts. We could have made things hard on you, but we were kind.
00:10:11
Speaker
We were like a mother taking care of little children. We loved you very much, so we were happy to share God's good news with you. And we always thank God because you believed.
00:10:26
Speaker
And you began to live like God's people. You became imitators of God's communities and Messiah Jesus that are in Judea. and we have wanted to see you for a long time.
00:10:40
Speaker
At last, we couldn't take it anymore. So we sent Timothy and he worked to help you have a strong faith. In these hard times, he helped you keep believing.
00:10:53
Speaker
You knew hard times were coming. We told you it would happen. And it did So I sent Timothy, and he came to see how your faith was holding up.
00:11:05
Speaker
And now Timothy just came back to us and he tells us good news about your faith. He tells us about your love. He says you're happy when you think about us. He says you want to see us just as we want to see you.
00:11:22
Speaker
We are having hard times too. So what Timothy told us helped us to feel better about you. You are strong in Jesus.
00:11:33
Speaker
How can we give enough thanks to God for that? We pray night and day that we can visit you. We want to see you again. We want to help build your faith up.
00:11:48
Speaker
We hope God shows us how to visit you. And we hope Jesus will make your love grow. Love each other and all people like we love you.
00:12:00
Speaker
And we hope God will make your heart strong and then no one can say bad things about you. You will have no sin when Jesus comes back.
00:12:12
Speaker
We told you how to live to make God happy and that is just the way that you are living. We pray that you keep growing more and more.
00:12:24
Speaker
God wants your hearts to stay clean from sin. So stay away from using sex in a wrong way. God wants you to control your own bodies.
00:12:35
Speaker
He wants people to be able to look up to you. So don't be like people who do not know God. Don't treat people the wrong way because God will bring trouble to you if you sin like this.
00:12:49
Speaker
God did not plan for us to have dirty minds. He plans for us to live sinless, good lives. So what if you don't live good lives?
00:13:00
Speaker
Well, then you're turning away from God. And it's God who gives you his Holy Spirit. Now concerning brotherly love, you have no need for anyone to write to you for you yourselves have been are taught by God.
00:13:18
Speaker
For you yourselves are taught to by God to love one another. And in fact, you even practice it toward all your brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia.
00:13:29
Speaker
But we urge you to keep progressing more and more. And try to live a quiet life. Mind your own business and work with your hands.
00:13:42
Speaker
And that way people who don't know God will look up to you. And then you won't need other people's help. Now to know we want you to know about dying.
00:13:54
Speaker
What if someone dies? Then don't be sad like people who don't have any hope. Here is what we believe. Jesus died and came back to life again.
00:14:06
Speaker
So God will bring people back to life again too. And they will get to be with Jesus. What if we are still a alive when Jesus comes back? Then we will go with him.
00:14:19
Speaker
But we will not go ahead of the people who died before us. Jesus himself told us this. Jesus will come down from heaven, and the angel in charge, the archangel, will shout with a loud voice, and he will tell us what to do.
00:14:36
Speaker
God's horn, the great shofar, will call us, and Jesus' followers who died will go up first, and then people who are alive will go up with them.
00:14:49
Speaker
We will go up in the clouds and we will meet Jesus in the air and then we will live with Jesus forever. Help each other remember this and it will cheer you up.
00:15:03
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:15:08
Speaker
So yesterday in our reading, we were talking about showing people what Jesus is like and making sure that we are doing what we are supposed to be doing ah because Jesus will be coming back.
00:15:20
Speaker
And we want to be found doing what we are doing when Jesus comes back because Jesus said that it would be good for us to be found doing our work when he returns. And so here...
00:15:32
Speaker
We are once again receiving confirmation from Paul to ah have encouragement to know that Jesus will come back. So apparently some of the people were concerned there in Thessalonica that they were worried that if that they were waiting for Jesus to come back immediately.
00:15:52
Speaker
And they didn't understand at the time that there would need to be a fullness in God's word, that it would need to be taught all over the whole earth.

Discussion on Resurrection Beliefs

00:16:00
Speaker
And so we know we are still waiting some, you know, 2000 some odd years later.
00:16:06
Speaker
And so nobody knows the time that Jesus will return. We talked about that yesterday. But the people there among the Thessalonians were concerned that if they died before Jesus came back, that they were not going to be joining him, that they would miss out on Jesus's second coming.
00:16:26
Speaker
So Paul is offering reassurance to them and to us as well, that it's okay if we don't see God's return within our lifetime. Because what will actually happen, as Jesus taught himself, is that first the dead will rise and be brought back to life and meet him.
00:16:45
Speaker
And then those of us who are still alive will be called by the great Shafar. And that's what we call the rapture. And so God is ah going to call all of us ah just in an order.
00:16:59
Speaker
So those who have already fallen asleep, as they say in the Bible, who have already died, they will go first. Nobody is going to miss out on that. I actually heard ah the rabbi speak about this similar situation um a couple of weeks ago where the there has been some confusion among believers as to the proper way for a body after death in order to ensure that we are actually resurrected.
00:17:29
Speaker
So there is some belief that one should not be cremated because then um you won't have a body left to resurrect. And so you must only be buried. And then there are ah other confusing things about that. And then there was some sort of a teaching that we have some kind of a, of like a, like a micro molecule or something. I don't remember what it's called, but it's something like that where some part of our essence remains. And so that is what God will use to resurrect.
00:17:57
Speaker
And all of that is just people trying to put understanding and to make up stuff. Nothing is impossible for God. God will bring us back to life when, if we are not here, when he comes again.
00:18:11
Speaker
So we don't need to worry about that. God says we're actually going to get a new body. So we don't need to be concerned about the state of of how our our decayed body has as gone.
00:18:22
Speaker
ah we We know that for people that have died a long time ago, they're ah they they can even their bones can completely go after a while. Some of them you know it can be found, but we certainly don't have the ability to see every single bone from every single person who ever lived.
00:18:41
Speaker
And so we don't need to be concerned that there will be something that will prevent us from being able to be resurrected at that time. So we want to offer encouragement for that, as that's what Paul is talking about here.

Encouragement for Growth and Unity

00:18:55
Speaker
And then for our daily application, we want to be encouraged to keep growing in our love. Never stop growing. Be imitators of Jesus so that others will see us and know how to imitate Jesus as well.
00:19:11
Speaker
That's what a disciple is. A disciple is somebody who is imitating their teacher. A disciple is a student. So the disciples were imitating Jesus.
00:19:23
Speaker
And Jesus taught them how to be like him. And then he sent them out. And that's the exact same thing that we are to do. We are the light of the world and the salt of the earth.
00:19:35
Speaker
So we are meant to imitate Jesus and be good examples to show how to love one another. And that is what paul is encouraging them encouraging.
00:19:46
Speaker
and um praising them for for doing, that their love is not just among each other, but it's throughout all of Macedonia. And their brotherly love is just wonderful. They have they are great examples.
00:20:00
Speaker
They are imitating Jesus. They are imitating the believers. they They are living the right way. And the Paul says that they never stop thanking God for them because they could see the fruit that God was growing in them.
00:20:15
Speaker
So that is my prayer for you today as you listen or watch this event. I pray that you are continuing to grow in your love every single day, that you continue to progress, as Paul said, that you continue to imitate Jesus and that others may see you and glorify our God in heaven.
00:20:36
Speaker
and want to be like him as well. Jesus said, they will people will know you are my followers if you love one another. And this is also what Paul is saying here too.
00:20:48
Speaker
I love how everything comes together, that we are seeing this big picture of how everything works together. like fibers being woven together into a beautiful blanket.
00:21:01
Speaker
Don't you love that? That's what I love about reading the Bible chronologically. We are seeing everything just come together beautifully and to see God's big picture for us.
00:21:12
Speaker
So I hope that you are encouraged today to keep loving one another, even those who are not of the faith, that we can love them into it to show people what the love of Jesus looks like.
00:21:25
Speaker
and that you have a fabulous rest of your day, whatever day you get around to watching or listening to today's October 26th daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible.
00:21:36
Speaker
Please also be encouraged to click that light button. We are growing. This event is growing. We are spreading the word about reading God's word. Let's spread the word about encouraging people to love one another the way Jesus and the way that Thessalonians loved one another.
00:21:53
Speaker
Thank you for joining me today as always. And I hope that you will join me again for tomorrow's daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible. And until we meet again, have a fabulous rest of your day.
00:22:04
Speaker
Keep loving one another.
