Today's we will finish reading Paul's letter to the Galatians with Chapters 5 and 6.

Today Paul will explain to us that there are two parts within us who are fighting with each other- the sinful self and the Spirit of God. Paul will explain to us about putting the sinful self aside because it died on the cross with Jesus and how to live by the Spirit that God gave us. Doing so will cause us to bear fruit by the Holy Spirit- peace, patience, joy, love, kindness, keeping promises, and self control. We will also read that having Jesus' forgiveness for our sins is not a license to sin freely!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about loving one another because we are all connected by God's Holy Spirit! Let us not become discouraged despite the coldness of the world around us. Jesus told us that people will know we are His followers if we love one another and Paul reminds us of that today. Let us be encouraged to live by the Spirit of God's Love that gives us everlasting life and love the way that God loves!

Introduction and Bible Reading Overview

00:00:02
Speaker
Welcome back, everybody. Today is October 23rd. My name is Robin. I am within the Family Way Coaching, and it is my pleasure to bring you today's daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:17
Speaker
If this is just popping up across your feed, this is a family-friendly, all-ages event. It's not just for kids. We are reading through the big picture of God's Bible in a little bit of a condensed version, but it is very complete.
00:00:30
Speaker
And it has the everything from Genesis to Revelation in chronological order, so we have big understanding of God's big story for us. Some of us are using my daily commitment calendar to keep track of where you are in your reading or you're listening or you're watching.
00:00:48
Speaker
And if you are go ahead and take that out and get your sticker ready or whatever you're personally using to mark off your days because we're about to hear the Bible today.

Galatians: Jewish Law vs Faith in Jesus

00:01:00
Speaker
We are going to be completing the book of Galatians today, which is a letter that Paul wrote to the areas, and the cities that were located in the territory of Galatia. And the main theme of this book is that there were Jewish people who were trying to tell the Gentile believers there that it wasn't enough to simply believe in Jesus and be saved for their sins.
00:01:25
Speaker
They also needed to comply with obeying the law. Paul has been giving us great understanding of why this is not necessary. We have our own law, per se, that Jesus gave us, and that's to love.
00:01:40
Speaker
And really, it's just an extension of God's rules for us, where God told us that the most important rule is to love Him. And now we extend that love to not only Him, but as well as to our neighbors, which was also a rule but previously.
00:01:55
Speaker
But we are just mainly to love. We don't need to worry about sin offerings or guilt offerings for atonement for our sins because we already know Jesus has paid the price for that.
00:02:08
Speaker
And it is good to follow the rules that God has for us for our life on how to live, like to abstain from things like witchcraft, sexual immorality, things like that.
00:02:19
Speaker
But as far as there being things like dietary restrictions and such like that, we don't have those rules anymore. specifically of what was of great importance to the early believers was whether or not the people or the men, I should say, were circumcised.
00:02:37
Speaker
And so that just simply is no longer relevant. We can choose to do so. There's nothing wrong with that, but we are not made righteous. We are not forgiven for our sins or made any better when we choose to have that done for our male children or male adults.

Living by the Spirit vs Sinful Nature

00:02:55
Speaker
So it's it's just, it's no longer ah necessary. In the beginning, it was necessary before we had the new covenant, because that was the covenant that God had with Abraham and then the Jewish believers who were part of Abraham's family.
00:03:11
Speaker
But now we have forgiveness of sins through faith. And that is awesome. And today Paul is going to be telling us about how to live our lives in faith, about the different, we call them warring factors within us. We have our spiritual self and we have our physical self.
00:03:31
Speaker
So our physical self is is always thinking about the sinful things, this the things of of the natural body, the things that we want to do. And Paul is going to explain that we are always at war with the spiritual self and that we need to die in the physical sense.
00:03:51
Speaker
Not literally, but to die to the self and what the sin nature part of us wants to do. And remember that we are now new beings in Jesus.
00:04:03
Speaker
So we are able to live by the spirit. Now, ah in accordance with that, just because we are forgiven, Paul is going to be telling us today that that does not give us a license of freedom to just sin all we want, because that is not living by the Spirit.

Forgiveness and Respect for God's Spirit

00:04:23
Speaker
I know at least one person that I have come across that says it doesn't matter what I do because... um I'm already forgiven for everything. Well, that is taking for granted God's gift.
00:04:35
Speaker
And that was also a concern for some people in the new and the new church as well, was that we don't need to worry about anything that we do anymore because we are forgiven. It's not a free license to do whatever we want.
00:04:48
Speaker
That is being disrespectful to God's spirit and to Jesus's redemption of our sins. So let's head in and finish reading the book of Galatians.

Fruits of the Spirit and Faith in Action

00:05:00
Speaker
And you know what else I love about this particular reading today is that it also talks about the fruit of the Spirit. We may be familiar with this already with peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control.
00:05:14
Speaker
And I love the way Paul puts it, ah but those are the fruits of the spirit. And he tells us that we grow what we plant. And this is the same thing Jesus taught us too, isn't it?
00:05:26
Speaker
Jesus said that we are known by the type of fruit that we grow. So if we are of the spirit, we're then we need to be seen by the fruit that we bear. And of course, I love Karen Henley's Bible version here, where she puts everything to read in a very easily understandable manner, so that no matter how young we are, Diamond, or Jedi, or Forrest, that we can still understand what it really means to have the fruits of the Spirit.
00:05:57
Speaker
So when we find that we are being impatient or we are easily frustrated or we are worried about things, we need to instead be looking not to what do I need to do to fix these things. I need to try to be peaceful. I need to try to be this. I need to try to be patient.
00:06:19
Speaker
These are not things that we can strive for. They are fruits of the spirit. It goes hand in hand with living for God's spirit.
00:06:30
Speaker
The Holy Spirit will give us these gifts if we are seeking to make God the most important one in our lives. And that's what Paul is getting at today as well. So I wanted to give us that little bit of heads up understanding so that we understand what we're reading before we get into it today.
00:06:48
Speaker
So that when we hear it, it will make good sense.
00:06:54
Speaker
Here we go, and beginning in Galatians chapter five. A good tree growing good fruit is the title of that chapter.
00:07:05
Speaker
Jesus set us free. don't carry the heavy load of serving the law. Remember Jesus told us that if the son has set us free, we are free indeed.
00:07:16
Speaker
We are no longer slaves to our sin. And this is exactly what Paul is saying here. I just want us to make that connection. Listen carefully, Paul says.
00:07:27
Speaker
Just looking Jewish won't do you any good. Let's say you try to be like a Jew. Well, then you have to obey every bit of the law. You try to get your heart clean from sin by obeying laws.
00:07:41
Speaker
But that takes you away from Jesus. It takes you away from God's kind love. With Jesus, it does not matter if you are a Jew.
00:07:54
Speaker
What matters is loving others to show you believe in him. Now this is not to say that people who are born Jewish cannot choose to live by faith and to honor God's observances ah with the understanding that doing so will not cause them to be saved.
00:08:14
Speaker
There's nothing against being Jewish. I know we have a lot of focus on that right now, but I also do want to clarify that this letter was written to Gentiles who were being told that they needed to be like the Jews.
00:08:29
Speaker
And we read yesterday that even Peter it does not do everything the way the Jews would do. So there is not a requirement to do that.
00:08:41
Speaker
If the Jewish people who believe in the Messiah wish to, for instance, abstain from food that God has said is unclean, they can choose to do so. And we can choose to do so.
00:08:54
Speaker
But we just need to make sure that it is not becoming a stumbling block, that we think that we earning our repentance by doing so, or that we are... ah becoming sinless by doing so, because that is not what sets us free.
00:09:10
Speaker
And so that is the distinction we want to make here. Not to say that Gentiles or the way of the Gentiles is now better than being Jewish. I just want to make sure we understand that as we read.
00:09:24
Speaker
With Jesus, it does not matter if you're a Jew. What matters is loving others to show you believe in him. this is very important. Even messy Messianic Jewish people They ah show their love for Jesus.
00:09:42
Speaker
And they know that that is what sets them apart as believers and that they do believe by faith in Jesus, just as Paul, just as Peter, just as John, who were all once Jewish and they were still Jewish. They didn't stop being Jewish.
00:09:57
Speaker
They just knew that they did not need to obey the sin atonements and stuff like that, the laws, which is what they were bound by before to try to keep themselves clean. Now Jesus made them

Love and Freedom over Law

00:10:09
Speaker
clean.
00:10:12
Speaker
Paul continues, It's as if you were running a race. You were doing a good job, but who got in your way? Who moved you away from following the truth?
00:10:24
Speaker
wasn't God. a little yeast mixes into all the dough. And I'm sure you will agree with me that whoever is mixing up your thinking is going to pay for it.
00:10:38
Speaker
What if I were still teaching people to be Jews? Well, then the Jews wouldn't be mad at me. They wouldn't be upset when I talk about the cross. But God planned for you to be free.
00:10:52
Speaker
But don't sin just because you are free. Instead, love and help each other. The whole law can be said in one rule.
00:11:03
Speaker
Love your neighbor the same way you love yourself. And that's what we've been talking about, isn't it? What if you keep fussing at each other?
00:11:14
Speaker
It's like you're biting at each other. Be careful or you will get rid of each other. here is what I say. Live by what God's spirit shows you.
00:11:26
Speaker
Then you won't try to sin. The sinful part of us wants something different than what God's spirit wants. The sinful part of us and God's spirit fight with each other inside of us.
00:11:42
Speaker
Let God's spirit lead you, and then the law will not be in charge of you, and neither will sin, I'm adding myself, Robin. If we do what God's spirit is leading us to do, then we won't be doing what the sinful nature wants us to do.
00:11:59
Speaker
It's easy to see what sin is. Things like using sex in the wrong way, worshiping idols, following witches, hating hating each other, fussing and fighting, wanting what other people have, showing great anger, being selfish, talking against each other, getting drunk,
00:12:28
Speaker
having wild parties, things like that. So be careful because people who do these things won't be in God's kingdom. And this is consistent with what Jesus taught us when he said that when we try to ah do whatever we want and then we say, Lord, knew you. And he says, you are evildoers. You didn't do as I taught you.
00:12:53
Speaker
Go away. don't know who you are.
00:12:57
Speaker
God's Spirit helps you to act in a different way, Paul tells us. You can be like a good tree growing good fruit. Loving, showing joy, having peace, waiting quietly, named being being good, keeping promises, treating people with care, having control of yourself.
00:13:26
Speaker
There is no law against these things. That was our fruits of the Spirit. Did you recognize that list? People who belong to Jesus have put their sinful self to death.
00:13:40
Speaker
And wanting to sin has been put to death because it's all been put on Jesus's cross. We live by God's Spirit. So let's follow the Spirit.
00:13:53
Speaker
Let's not think we're the best. Let's not make each other mad. Let's not want what other people have. Now, what if somebody sins?
00:14:05
Speaker
You can show him the right way to act, but be kind about it. Watch out. You might want to sin too.
00:14:16
Speaker
There we go. Everything we do, we need to do with what? Love.
00:14:23
Speaker
Help each other with your problems. And that way you will do what Jesus wants. What if you think you're important when you're not? Then you lie to yourself.
00:14:36
Speaker
Be careful how you act. And don't worry about what each other what other people do. Each person should take care of his own work.
00:14:47
Speaker
Let's say you learn God's word from a teacher. Then share good things with your teacher. Do not believe a lie. You can't make fun of God.
00:14:59
Speaker
a farm a farmer will get the kind of plant that he planted, and it's the same way with you. The person whose sins will get in trouble. But let's say the person lives to please God's spirit.
00:15:15
Speaker
Then he will get life from the Spirit and it will be life that lasts forever. Isn't that good news? Do not get tired of doing good things.
00:15:29
Speaker
Someday we will get paid back for doing good, but we must not give up. Let's do good whenever we can. But most of all,
00:15:41
Speaker
Let's do good to each other, God's people. Do you see the big letters I am writing to you? I'm writing with my own hand.
00:15:53
Speaker
Now, some people want to look good to everyone, and they try to do it by saying you have to be like Jews. And they have a reason for saying this, because they are afraid that they will be hurt by the Jewish people, and they might be hurt for believing that Jesus died on the cross to save people.
00:16:12
Speaker
It's funny though, even people who are like Jews don't obey the law, but they want you to become like Jews. And that's so that they can brag about you.
00:16:24
Speaker
There is only one thing I want to brag about, and it's how Jesus died on the cross for me. It does not matter if you are like a Jew or not.
00:16:39
Speaker
What matters is Jesus making you new. God, give your peace and kind love to people who think this way and give these things even to God's own Jewish people.
00:16:58
Speaker
Let's pray that today. I know I pray this for you. For you, the listener, I am praying for God to give you the peace and kind love that he has for you.
00:17:12
Speaker
And also to give these things to God's Jewish people who are yet to understand that Jesus is their Messiah. And I pray that Jesus's kind love will be in your spirit.

Unity in Faith and New Creation

00:17:27
Speaker
Yes, amen, Paul writes, from Paul and all God's people who are with me.
00:17:36
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:17:41
Speaker
Well, there's not much more I can comment on that, is there? We talked about it beforehand. We talked about it during. It was such a good news today, wasn't it? I loved learning about God's spirit.
00:17:54
Speaker
Just as a recap, I will just remind us our daily application for today, and that's that we live for the Spirit. We are looking to make God the most important one in our lives this year and every year.
00:18:09
Speaker
That's our big takeaway for the whole year is learning throughout this year and our daily readings and our daily applications that we need to make God and Jesus the most important ones in our lives.
00:18:22
Speaker
And we do that by loving him, loving them both, and by loving each other. When we live by the Spirit, we will reap what we sow.
00:18:34
Speaker
We will grow good fruit. The types of fruit we will grow will be loving but other people. We will have more love. We will have joy.
00:18:46
Speaker
we will have peace. We will have gentleness. We will be kind. We will be good. we will be able to keep promises.
00:18:58
Speaker
We will have self-control. we will treat other people with care. Aren't those wonderful things? And we should not get tired of doing these good things.
00:19:13
Speaker
It can be hard to keep pressing on when ah when the world seems to be growing more and more cold. But we need to persevere. We are the light in the world.
00:19:25
Speaker
We show the world God's kind love. He loves through us. So let's not get tired of loving everybody. But especially, let's make sure to love one another.
00:19:39
Speaker
Jesus said, if you do this, you will show others that you are my followers. So let's especially make sure to love one another. We've talked about this year a couple of times. If you're new, you may not have heard this, but we are one in spirit with God and Jesus.
00:19:58
Speaker
And we are also connected to one another. We are not just by words part of one body. We are unified in spirit. We are connected with the Holy Spirit.
00:20:10
Speaker
The same Holy Spirit that came upon the Jewish people, that came upon the Gentile people, that came upon you, that came upon me when we believed, connects us.
00:20:22
Speaker
We are not simply connected to God and Jesus with that Holy Spirit. We are connected to one another. So let's show the world that we are one.
00:20:35
Speaker
We show them by loving one another, by being kind to one another, by looking out for one another. Having forgiveness is not a free license to sin and do whatever the sinful nature wants.
00:20:48
Speaker
That nature has died and we are now a new creation in God through Jesus. So I hope that you are just overfilled with joy today.

Spreading Love and Kindness through the Spirit's Gifts

00:21:00
Speaker
I hope that you feel God has lit that light and you are just going to be shining all day, no matter what time or what day you get around to hearing or watching this October 22nd daily reading from our day-by-day kids Bible this year.
00:21:14
Speaker
If you would be so kind, I would ask for you to please click that light button so that we can light the way for others to hear this wonderful news out of God's word, to help us spread the word about reading God's word so that other people too can learn that Jesus died for them, that they have the spirit in them that connects us, to just be encouraged with all of the wonderful gifts the Holy Spirit will grow within us if we allow him to do so.
00:21:45
Speaker
And we do that by clicking that thumbs up or that heart. It could be a subscribe, a follow, and especially a share. Let's share the good news.
00:21:55
Speaker
We are called to be witnesses. We are called to be God's light in the world. So let's do that. It's not for me. I don't care. This has nothing to do with, it's not a popularity contest for me.
00:22:07
Speaker
My goal is to spread the word about reading God's word. and for people to hear this amazing news so that they too can be encouraged with the daily applications that God shows us in the Bible.
00:22:20
Speaker
So have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you got around to watching or listening to today's daily reading. And when you are hungry for more of God's word, tomorrow, I will be here for that too.
00:22:32
Speaker
Enjoy your day, everyone, and may God bless you richly in the Holy Spirit. Love one another.
