If you would like to download my FREE calendar for keeping track of your commitment to read the Bible every day, you can find that on my site, here:     https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/pages/read-the-bible-in-1-year

Monthly memberships to support this event can be purchased on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/offering_packages

In today's reading we will read Luke Chapter 3:1-18, 21-23, Mark Chapter 1:2-11, and Matthew Chapter 3:1-17. Today we read about God calling John the Baptist to fulfill His prophecy of being a voice calling in the desert, making the way for the coming of the Lord. John taught confession and repentance of sins and bearing fruit worthy of that repentance after baptizing. We also read about Jesus coming to be baptized, telling John that it was good for them to do everything that was right.

In our discussion for daily application today we will talk about the fact that Jesus is not above the law. He always does what is right, like our Heavenly Father, and we, too, should strive to do all that is right and bear fruit worthy of our repentance. Everyone is known by the fruit they produce. By abiding in Jesus and being one with Him we, too, can continue to produce fruit and be encouraged in knowing that even when we bear good fruit our Heavenly Father will prune us and refine us so that we bear EVEN MORE good fruit!

Introduction and Welcome

00:00:03
Speaker
Well, here we are again. Welcome back to today's daily Bible reading as we go through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. My name is Robin, in case you don't already know.
00:00:15
Speaker
I am within the Family Way Coaching, and it is my pleasure to ah bring to you this year the reading of the Day by Day Kids Bible.

Encouragement to Follow Along

00:00:24
Speaker
If you are following along on your daily commitment calendar, it's time to take that out and get that sticker out, get that pen out, whatever you're using, and mark it off because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:42
Speaker
Today we are going to be reading about John the Baptist.

Staying Focused on the Reading

00:00:47
Speaker
And I tell you, it is so hard for me not to get stuck down a rabbit trail.
00:00:53
Speaker
There is so, so, so much to learn in God's word. This event only focuses on daily application in today's reading.
00:01:04
Speaker
But you know that i include a lot of other stuff too, explaining and and going into other things and giving references to other verses and stuff like that. And man, oh man, I wanted to do that today.
00:01:17
Speaker
it it would just take too long. And I don't have time to go down that rabbit trail today.

Passion for Learning and Reading

00:01:23
Speaker
But that is why am really just thinking that God would love for me to go ah and next year have ah like a second course event.
00:01:33
Speaker
this is a great overview, and we are learning a lot about the Bible. But there's even more!
00:01:43
Speaker
it just never ends. I don't know about you, but I am somebody who can just never get enough. of god's word I love learning about it.
00:01:54
Speaker
I've always been an avid reader. ah loved reading growing up. I used to read and read and read. And I would just read

Reflections on Understanding God's Word

00:02:03
Speaker
all the time. i was a bookworm.
00:02:05
Speaker
And people ask me nowadays, oh, are do you read? What kind of books do you read? And I say, you know what? don't really have interest in reading fiction anymore because there is so much for me to read that is not fiction.
00:02:21
Speaker
I get a greater enjoyment now by learning about things. And I have for a number of years. I guess it started after I had my daughter. So that's 23 years ago when I had to start reading, you know, stuff about babies and children and and learning. and And then I still enjoyed reading about other things, but it became less.
00:02:43
Speaker
And i made an effort for a while to to read ah fictional books, which I enjoyed, but I just don't have that same drive to read the fiction anymore.
00:02:55
Speaker
But I do have a drive to read and learn and study about God's word. And it's just increased over the years. And i I just, I gotta believe that God is is putting that in me in order to do something with it. It's not just for personal edification.
00:03:13
Speaker
And that's where I got kind of frustrated, um I don't know, about 15 years ago and was like, gosh, I take all these Bible studies and I'm learning, what am I gonna do with all this knowledge?
00:03:24
Speaker
And so I looked into doing seminary school, but that just, God didn't call me into that. And he he wanted to teach me himself rather than just attending school.
00:03:36
Speaker
And I love that. And i love that he gives me time to spend in his word and gives me curiosity. So I'm very driven to to learn more when I read the verses that we read.

Considering a Deeper Bible Study

00:03:50
Speaker
And it's kind of like looking through ah like first a binoculars where you see things from far away and you kind of bring them up close. But then I like bringing it down even further and looking at it through a microscope.
00:04:04
Speaker
And that's what I'm thinking about doing for next year is to bringing it, bringing our focus in closer. to ah host a similar event where we keep reading and we reread the Bible in chronological order using the full version of the Bible.
00:04:23
Speaker
And God is just really putting that on my heart. I'm just, I'm very excited about that prospect. So again, I mentioned yesterday, and I'm going to mention again today, that wherever you are watching or listening, please pray for me, that if that is the path that God is leading me on, I'm very excited about that prospect, but I get excited about things.
00:04:46
Speaker
as you can see by watching or listening to this event. and um And I want to be sure that God is inviting me to do that. And it's not just my own desire. um So thank you.
00:04:59
Speaker
So let's get into reading about John the Baptist and and reading about Jesus's own baptism today.

John the Baptist's Life and Teachings

00:05:12
Speaker
We are having our readings today come from the books of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, all of which are in, oh let's see, no, Mark is chapter one, and Matthew is chapter three, and Luke is chapter three.
00:05:28
Speaker
Our first section is entitled, The Man Who Wore Camel's Hair.
00:05:35
Speaker
Another Caesar was now the highest ruler of the land, and he had ruled for 15 years. At this time, God sent word to Zechariah's son, John.
00:05:47
Speaker
John was living in the desert. He wore clothes made of camel's hair, and he wore a leather belt. He ate honey and big grasshoppers called locusts, and many people went to hear him teach.
00:06:04
Speaker
John went to the land around the Jordan River. He told all the people there to be sorry for their sins. He told them to be baptized.
00:06:15
Speaker
And that's how the prophet Isaiah's words came true. There is a voice calling in the desert. Make the way ready for the Lord. Make a flat road for him.
00:06:27
Speaker
The valleys will get higher. The hills will get lower. The bumpy ground will get smooth. God will show who he is.
00:06:38
Speaker
And everybody in the world will see how God saves.
00:06:46
Speaker
Crowds of people came out to hear John. And they came to be baptized in the river water too. Many of the people said that they had sinned.
00:06:57
Speaker
And they were sorry. So John put them under the water and brought them up again. He baptized them and God forgave them.
00:07:11
Speaker
John had this message for some of the Jewish leaders. You are a pack of snakes. Who told you to get away from God's anger? Do things that show things that show you are sorry for your sins.
00:07:26
Speaker
Don't say that you are good enough because you're from Abraham's family. God can turn rocks into children, pray Abraham. What happens if a tree doesn't grow good fruit?
00:07:38
Speaker
Asked John. It gets cut down. Then it gets tossed into the fire. So stop doing wrong and do good, or you will be in trouble.
00:07:52
Speaker
What should we do? asked the people. Let's say you have two coats, said John. Share one with somebody who doesn't have a coat.
00:08:03
Speaker
Let's say you have food. Share it with someone who needs food. Men who gathered tax money came to be baptized, and they asked,
00:08:14
Speaker
What should we do, teacher? Do not take more money than you should, said John. Men from the army asked, What should we do?
00:08:27
Speaker
Don't make people give you money, said John. Don't lie to get people in trouble, and be happy with the money you are paid.
00:08:39
Speaker
Jesus at the River
00:08:43
Speaker
People wondered if maybe John was the promised one. Maybe he was the one God had promised to send. and But John told them, I just dip you into water, but somebody else is going to come.
00:09:00
Speaker
He has more power than I have, and I am not even good enough to untie his shoes. He will soak you with the Holy Spirit. said John.
00:09:12
Speaker
He will bring fire. He will gather what is good the way wheat is gathered into a barn. But he will burn up everything that is not good.
00:09:24
Speaker
John told the people many other things, and his words brought good news.
00:09:32
Speaker
One day, Jesus came to the Jordan River, and he asked John to dip him under the water. John tried to stop him. You should baptize me in water, said John. Instead, you want me baptize thanks you?
00:09:53
Speaker
Yes, said Jesus. Go ahead. It's a good thing to do, and we should do everything that is right.
00:10:03
Speaker
So John dipped Jesus into the water.
00:10:08
Speaker
Jesus came up out of the water, and then he saw heaven open. God's spirit came down like a dove, and it landed on Jesus.
00:10:22
Speaker
This is my son, said a voice from heaven. I love him. i am very happy with him.
00:10:33
Speaker
And Jesus was about 30 years old
00:10:39
Speaker
That's the end of our reading today.
00:10:43
Speaker
Isn't that awesome? Oh man, I had to read that over and over today.

Repentance and Spiritual Growth

00:10:50
Speaker
The rabbit trail that I wanted to go down is that John was not just baptizing. He was teaching. He was baptizing them and God forgave them.
00:11:05
Speaker
Prior to this point, how did people get forgiven? had to go to the priests and the priests had to do it. But when John was baptizing them, God forgave them.
00:11:21
Speaker
We will learn more about that next year, hopefully. Oh man. So let's look at John's message. Is it anything new?
00:11:33
Speaker
Have you been here for a while and been hearing the Bible this year? Did you hear all of the old covenant with me? Does this sound like what God has been telling the people from the very beginning?
00:11:46
Speaker
If you have something, share it with others. If you have food, feed those who are hungry. What about producing good fruit? In the Big Bible, it says that ah from John, John the Baptist speaking, he says to produce fruit that is worthy of repentance.
00:12:09
Speaker
Meaning that after you have been forgiven for your sins, after you have confessed your sins, and after you are doing better, correcting your behavior, produce fruit.
00:12:23
Speaker
We are known by our fruit. Even a child hold is known by their fruit. And what happens to it the tree that doesn't bear fruit that is good?
00:12:35
Speaker
That's right, it gets cut down. And we're going to hear Jesus teaching about this exact same thing. He says, does a fig tree produce thorns?
00:12:47
Speaker
No. Does a thorn produce fig tree, figs? No. We are known by the fruit that we produce. So we are to be known by our love.
00:13:00
Speaker
We are to be known by our fruit. And it is easy to see our fruit. And God tells us, Jesus told will tell us later on, that even those of us who are producing fruit, God will prune us so that we produce even more fruit.
00:13:19
Speaker
There is no limit to the abundance, like the tree of life. The tree of life produces fruit abundantly. And God wants us to be just as fruitful as that tree of life because we have the way, the truth, and the life with us.
00:13:37
Speaker
He is God with us. We are able to bear much fruit.
00:13:45
Speaker
We are to do what is right. Jesus came and told him when John said, ah How can you want me to baptize you? It is you who should be baptizing me.
00:13:55
Speaker
Jesus said it is good for us to do everything that is right. Jesus is not above doing what is right. He is not so good that he can afford to slack off.
00:14:10
Speaker
That's not the way it works. God never does what is wrong. Our God is perfect and holy. And we are to be holy and set apart like God.
00:14:20
Speaker
To be not of the world, but of God. So as his children, we cannot be perfect. But we are to do our best to produce fruit and God will grow fruit with us.
00:14:35
Speaker
And whatever is not producing fruit, he will cut down and throw into the fire. Jesus tells us that we have to abide in him. We have to be with him all the time because he is the vine.
00:14:48
Speaker
And we cannot survive on our own. We cannot do it on our own power. We can only do this through Jesus, through God. This is not something that we can attain on our own by simply being good people.
00:15:03
Speaker
We do this by acknowledging that we are one with God. We are one with Jesus. And we have been baptized in the Holy Spirit. We were given the Holy Spirit to connect us for shalom, wholeness, fullness with God, wellness.
00:15:21
Speaker
And we can produce fruit. God will produce fruit through us. So it's not enough to simply confess our sins and say, yes, I did this. We need to be renewed by a transforming of our mind.
00:15:35
Speaker
We need to think differently. We've talked about this in the past. If you're new, you may not be aware of it, but we have to take care of what we put into our mind by what we hear and out of the mouth comes the overflow of the heart.
00:15:51
Speaker
So we need to take care about the people we keep company with around us. We need to take care about the things we listen to to because these things affect our thoughts. And that affects our mind.
00:16:03
Speaker
And we need to be renewed by a transforming of our mind so that we can bear much fruit and be known by that fruit. And even then, don't be discouraged. I know I was at first.
00:16:14
Speaker
I was trying so hard ah for a while. um I shared this once before, but it's possible you may not have heard this, that i um i want I'm very easy to discipline.
00:16:25
Speaker
I don't want to be disciplined. I work hard to do what is right, but I'm not perfect. And so I only need gentle correction if I have done something wrong. And God is gentle with me.
00:16:37
Speaker
And ah our big Bible teaches that fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. And our our version puts it, putting God as the most important one is the beginning of wisdom.
00:16:49
Speaker
And i don't want to have to be disciplined for doing something wrong. I want to do what is right so that God doesn't need to discipline me. And then, but we can't expect that nothing bad will ever happen or that bad things won't won't occur that we won't be disciplined because we're not perfect.
00:17:10
Speaker
and And at first I was rather discouraged because I'm like, but I'm doing my best and I would get frustrated. And then God showed me where Jesus taught us that even those who bear fruit, God prunes so that we bear even more fruit.
00:17:27
Speaker
So don't be discouraged if you feel like you're doing your best and you're producing fruit and yet God is still pruning you. Jesus tells us that he refines us And we there's always something more to be refined.
00:17:42
Speaker
But our God is delicate with us when we went he deals with us. He is gentle. He knows our hearts. And he doesn't treat us the way he would treat someone who has no care for his his will.

God's Discipline and Spiritual Fruit

00:17:55
Speaker
So we know that when he is refining us and pruning us, He is doing so with love. And even when he disciplines us, he disciplines us with love, like a father does a child or like a mother does a child, because he is our heavenly father.
00:18:10
Speaker
And his goal is to produce more fruit. Just like when we go out and we start tending the branches and we're sniffing and we go, oh, this one we can get rid of, and then it will bear more tomatoes or something.
00:18:24
Speaker
So there you go. I hope that you feel God has lit your light today. i know today's reading was was very exciting for me. and i say that often, but I hope it was very exciting for you as well as you are listening and that you are encouraged.
00:18:41
Speaker
and That's what I mean by God has lit your light. I hope that you feel that you are encouraged, that you have understanding of of our Father's word. And that you are motivated ah in it to do and to apply what we have learned today.
00:18:57
Speaker
That's what I mean by i hope you feel God has lit your light today.
