Jesus's Death and Burial Traditions

00:01:02
Speaker
Today, we are picking up where everybody is sad because Jesus has passed away. His physical life has ended.
00:01:15
Speaker
Now, remember this was in preparation of Passover. So this was actually on the day of the week of Thursday. And the Jewish calendar days begin and end at sunset.
00:01:30
Speaker
So they go from sunset to sunset. So they wanted to be sure that on this day of preparation, as everybody was slaughtering their Passover lambs, that all of the bodies were dead and removed before the Passover celebration was to begin.
00:01:50
Speaker
Now, we talked about yesterday that as Jesus was dying, it was occurring very near the time that everybody was slaughtering their Passover lambs. Jesus was our Passover lamb.
00:02:03
Speaker
This was to remember that when the Israelites were in Egypt in the final, um,
00:02:13
Speaker
uh i'm drawing a blank on the word they the consequence that was coming to the egyptians because they would not let god's people leave egypt was to be uh the um the the the killing of the very firstborn in every household And in order to cause the Lord to pass over, they had to slaughter a lamb. They had to follow very specific instructions.
00:02:44
Speaker
They had to slaughter a lamb, making sure not to break any of the lamb's bones. So even now, as we celebrate Passover, none of the bones of the lamb can be broken.
00:02:58
Speaker
And that occurred ah at this particular time was to be and this a preparation day was Thursday. Then the following day was a Sabbath, a festival Sabbath.
00:03:09
Speaker
So it was a commanded to be a day of rest. And then the following day after that was actually the Sabbath, which was Saturday. So we have, this was a Thursday, then Friday was the Sabbath day, and then Saturday was also the Sabbath day, and then Jesus rose on Sunday.
00:03:31
Speaker
So the next day was the special worship day, the Passover, and the Jews did not want bodies left on the crosses that day. So they asked Pilate if they could break the men's legs.
00:03:43
Speaker
Then they could take them off the crosses sooner. So the guards came and they broke the first man's legs who was on one side of Jesus. And then next they broke the legs of the other man who was on the other side of Jesus hanging.
00:03:58
Speaker
And then they came to Jesus, but he was already dead. So they did not break his legs. And instead, one guard put a spear into Jesus's side and blood and water flowed out from it.
00:04:14
Speaker
And this happened so that the words of the psalm would come true, as well as Zechariah 12, verse 10, and Isaiah 53, verse 5.
00:04:25
Speaker
And then that psalm is 34, verse 21. None of his bones will be broken. And it was like Zechariah said in 12, 10, they will look at the one they hurt with a spear.
00:04:39
Speaker
In our big Bible, it says they will look upon the one they have pierced.
00:04:45
Speaker
A man who saw this happen told about it. This is John. John saw it. He knew that it had happened, and he tells the truth, and he tells it so that we can believe.
00:04:57
Speaker
He witnessed the spear being pierced into Jesus' side to see the blood and water flow, to understand the fulfillment of Scripture.
00:05:09
Speaker
Now evening came, and a man named Joseph went to see Pilate. Joseph was a Jewish leader. He was also secretly a disciple of Jesus.
00:05:22
Speaker
But he was watching for God's kingdom to come. He was very brave, and he asked Pilate if he could have Jesus' body. Now, Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead.
00:05:35
Speaker
So he called for the man in charge of the guards, the centurion. And he asked if this was true. Was Jesus already dead? So the man in charge said, yes, Jesus was already dead.
00:05:50
Speaker
Now, remember, at the moment Jesus had died, there had also been an earthquake. And they were very nervous at all of these things happening. So Pilate said Joseph could take Jesus' body.
00:06:07
Speaker
So it was confirmed that Jesus was, in fact, dead. Now Nicodemus went with Joseph. You might remember Nicodemus. Nicodemus was the man who had once come to see Jesus at night.
00:06:21
Speaker
And he and Joseph both took about 75 pounds of spices with them. And they went to Jesus' body and they took it. And they covered his body with spices.
00:06:33
Speaker
And then they put clean cloth all around his body. This was the way that the Jewish people prepared to get a body ready. And then they put it into a grave.
00:06:45
Speaker
Joseph put Jesus' body in his own new grave. And he had cut it out of rock in a garden. This was to fulfill Isaiah 53, verse 9.
00:06:59
Speaker
The worship day was the next day, and the grave was close by, so that is where they put Jesus' body. And then they rolled a big stone in front of it, the opening.
00:07:11
Speaker
Then they left. The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph, and they saw the grave. And they saw how Jesus' body was put inside the grave.
00:07:23
Speaker
And then the women went home and they got some spices ready for Jesus's body too, for permanent burial. But then they had to rest because it was the worship day. And the law said they had to rest on the worship day.
00:07:38
Speaker
Now some of the Jewish leaders went to talk to Pilate. We remembered something, they said. Before Jesus died, he said he would come back to life after three days.
00:07:50
Speaker
Now, Jesus was lying, they said, but send some guards over to his grave and tell them to make sure that the grave stays closed because we don't want Jesus's friends to take his body.
00:08:01
Speaker
And then they would tell everyone that he came back to life again. And now that would be an even bigger problem for us than we had before. All right, said Pilate, take some guards and make sure no one takes the body.
00:08:17
Speaker
So the guards went to the grave. They made sure that the stone was in place. It was in front of the opening into the grave. They sealed the stone so that people would see that the grave had stayed closed.
00:08:35
Speaker
And then the guards stood by the grave. Now, this was after the Sabbath. The next day was the first day of the week. So they could not go on the day of Passover.
00:08:48
Speaker
They could not go um the next day, Saturday, because that was the Sabbath.

The Resurrection and Its Significance

00:08:53
Speaker
And again, they were not permitted to work on the Sabbath. And they had to rest. So the day after that was the first day of the week, Sunday.
00:09:04
Speaker
Sunday is the first day of the week. You can look at any calendar, and that's what it shows us. Sunday is not the seventh day of the week. Now the sun was just beginning to come up, and suddenly the earth began to shake, and an angel came down from heaven.
00:09:23
Speaker
The angel went to the grave. He rolled away the stone at the opening. And then he sat down on it. The angel looked like lightning and his clothes were as white as snow.
00:09:38
Speaker
Now the guards saw the angel and they were so afraid that they shook and they fell down and they looked like they were dead. Mary Magdalene, another Mary and Salome left for the grave.
00:09:52
Speaker
They started on their way right after the sun came up. They were taking spices to the grave. They were going to put them on Jesus's body. But they were wondering, who was going to roll the stone away for them?
00:10:06
Speaker
Who will roll it from the opening of the grave? So they came to the grave and they saw the big stone, but it had already been rolled away. So they went inside the grave.
00:10:19
Speaker
There the women saw a young man sitting there and he was wearing white robe. They were surprised and they were scared. Don't be afraid, he said.
00:10:32
Speaker
You are looking for Jesus who was killed, but he is not here. He is alive again you can see the place where he was.
00:10:43
Speaker
But don't stay here, said the young man. Go tell Peter and Jesus' other friends what happened and tell them that Jesus is going to Galilee and they can see him there.
00:10:55
Speaker
say that it is just the way Jesus told them it would be.
00:11:02
Speaker
Now the women were shaking. They did not know what to think. They went there in a hurry. And at first they didn't tell anybody what had happened because they were too scared, but they also had great joy.
00:11:19
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today. Yay! Jesus is alive! Isn't that awesome? Jesus told us when he told the Sadducees, he said, God is not the God of the dead.
00:11:35
Speaker
is the God of the living. When the Sadducees said that they didn't believe in life after death, Jesus said, you don't understand. You have wandered far away.
00:11:50
Speaker
God is not the God of the dead. is that god up the of the living. Praise God. We will all rise again. Jesus rose on that third day.
00:12:03
Speaker
And although it is not mentioned in what we call the Gospels, it is mentioned in the letters that on this particular day of the calendar, we know that there was Passover.
00:12:17
Speaker
But the third day is the feast of first fruits. And that is the fulfillment of Jesus rising from the dead because Jesus is the first fruits of those to rise from the dead to live again.
00:12:37
Speaker
This is quoted for us, we know this, in 1 Corinthians 15, verse 20. Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
00:12:53
Speaker
God's timing is perfect. Jesus died on preparation day as our Passover lamb. Three days later, he rose again fulfill the Feast of First Fruits.
00:13:09
Speaker
Jesus did not come to abolish the law. He came to fulfill it. And he has fulfilled it. Then, 50 days later, we have the day of Shavuot, which is what in Greek we call Pentecost, the 50 days later.
00:13:28
Speaker
So forever, it seems like, the Israelite people would be counting up years and years. And they didn't understand. It was just that was the day they were to count up, Shavuot.
00:13:39
Speaker
And then it was a day of blessing. They had no idea that God was going to fulfill these days with the real Passover lamb, our Messiah, our real atonement, our real first fruits from the dead.
00:13:53
Speaker
And then with the Holy Spirit being poured out, And Shavuot.
00:14:01
Speaker
God's timing is perfect. It is so amazing. We don't learn about these things in church, about the Feast of First Fruits. I'm going to share with you ah a little bit about that Feast of First Fruits.
00:14:16
Speaker
We celebrate on Easter, but you know what? Easter is a man-made holiday specifically designed to cause separation between our Jewish brethren and what we would call Christian brethren.
00:14:31
Speaker
We just need to get rid of it. It is not meant to be that we are to celebrate man-made holidays. God has given us these days and we are forgetting about them.
00:14:43
Speaker
We are choosing to make up our own day. And that is not okay. It is our adversary who has encouraged us to do these things. We need to have unity with our Jewish brethren because it is the fulfillment of these days that God himself gave us that we have these fulfillments in our with Jesus.
00:15:07
Speaker
So let's see. In the law, in Leviticus 23, verses 9 through 14, verses nine through fourteen The Lord said to Moses, speak to the Israelites and say to them, when you enter the land I'm going to give you and you reap its harvest, bring to the priest a sheaf of the first grain you harvest.
00:15:29
Speaker
He is to wave the sheaf before the Lord so it will be accepted on your behalf. The priest is to wave it on the day after the Sabbath day. This is after Passover.
00:15:42
Speaker
So it's the first Passover. day after the Sabbath of the Passover.
00:15:49
Speaker
He is to wave the sheaf before the Lord so it will be accepted on your behalf. The priest is to wave it on the day after the Sabbath and on the day you wave the sheaf.
00:16:00
Speaker
You must sacrifice as a burnt offering to the Lord, a lamb a year old without defect, together with its grain offering. And then it goes on to describe the the offering.
00:16:12
Speaker
So there are three spring feasts often overlooked because Passover and Feast Unleavened which is to be a lasting ordinance for the wherever you live
00:16:26
Speaker
so there are three spring feasts and often overlooked because of passover and the feast of unleavened bread which is the days of matzo they overshadow and surround it is the first fruits It's easy to miss its importance since the Gospel accounts don't mention it.
00:16:46
Speaker
But although it's not obvious from that passage, the Lord was referring to the Sabbath that comes after the Passover. And the Passover can fall on any day of the week, which also happens to be the 14th of the first month.
00:16:58
Speaker
The Feast of First Fruits is always the following Sunday, the day after the Sabbath, after Passover. So in this particular one, we have God's three days that Jesus was to remain in the belly of the earth, the sign of Jonah.
00:17:13
Speaker
So God's timing was perfect.
00:17:17
Speaker
this The Passover, the Sabbath, and the Feast of First Fruits to occur after the first Sabbath all aligned perfectly to fulfill God's scripture and God's perfect timing.
00:17:32
Speaker
So that the year the Lord was crucified, we had the three days and three nights until later it was Sunday morning, the Feast of First Fruits.

Easter and Biblical Traditions

00:17:40
Speaker
Now, for several hundred years after that, the Sunday morning after Passover was known to Christians as Resurrection Morning.
00:17:49
Speaker
But at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, Eastern and Western bishops of the church disagreed over the, quote, official date for the church's most important holy day.
00:18:02
Speaker
Eastern bishops favored staying with the calculation involving Passover as Leviticus describes, since many of them were of Jewish origin, and since the Gospels had placed resurrection morning just after Passover.
00:18:15
Speaker
So they were accurate. They were wanting to stay with the Gospel. But Western bishops being mostly Gentile, here we go, separation. They favored a date that was closer to the beginning of spring because there were already a number of pagan festivals held during that time and a religious holiday would fit right in.
00:18:36
Speaker
And perhaps this is when the Western church began referring to resurrection morning as Easter Sunday after the Babylonian fertility gosh goddess Ishtar. The Feast of Ishtar was always celebrated at the beginning of spring and it involved eggs and rabbits and other signs of fertility.
00:18:56
Speaker
Hmm. And even today you can see how those elements of the two have been merged together. So now Easter is associated with Easter bunnies, Easter eggs, and new birth and life.
00:19:11
Speaker
But really, do you see it? it is It is the same thing that the Jewish people were doing by combining and pagan worship with God.
00:19:26
Speaker
God said that was detestable. We should not in good conscience continue to celebrate, quote, Easter. But instead, we need to honor God's holiday and God's fulfillment with first fruits directly after the Passover.
00:19:46
Speaker
Eventually, due in part to the view that since Jewish people had, quote, rejected Christ, Jewish traditions should not be used in selecting the date for Easter. And the Western Church settled on the first Sunday after the full moon, after the spring equinox.
00:20:04
Speaker
And soon Easter Sunday became disconnected from Passover by as much as several weeks. We are coming up upon the time of the Feast of Tabernacles tomorrow.
00:20:16
Speaker
The celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles, the Feast of Passover, the Feast of Shavuot. These are all what are considered God's moedim. Guess what? There is no, ah it is not coincidental that there are three of them.
00:20:33
Speaker
Our God is three in one. God shows us these things. So now we have these man-made dates. And now it is completely disconnected from our Jewish roots.
00:20:48
Speaker
The adoption of the Gregorian calendar, which is the one we use in the West today, started in 1752, and it did not do anything to correct this disconnect. And since the Eastern or Orthodox Church stuck with the earlier Julian calendar, we now have two dates for Easter in most years.
00:21:07
Speaker
So guess what? There isn't even one set day for Easter. We just need to agree and go back. to what is right, and that would be to observe Passover, and then the Feast of First Fruits, and then Shavuot, and not be calling it Pentecost, because 50 days doesn't mean anything, whereas Shavuot does.
00:21:30
Speaker
In 2004, the Feast of First Fruits and Orthodox and Western Easter all came on the same day, which was a very rare occasion. But back to the Feast of First Fruits.
00:21:42
Speaker
the So the grains were planted in the fall in Israel and they germinated in the ground through the winter. They shot up as soon as the weather got warm. They ripened in the spring. So our first festival in the spring is the barley he festival of of harvest.
00:21:58
Speaker
And here in the fall for the Feast of Tabernacles, we have the wheat harvest.
00:22:06
Speaker
And this is to coincide with we know that um God asks for our first fruits, our sacrifice of first fruits, to dedicate, to offer the first of anything that we receive to the Lord.
00:22:21
Speaker
So this at sunrise on the morning of the Feast brute the feast of Firstfruits in 32 AD, as the priests were waving the sheaf of grain before the altar, the women arrived at the Lord's tomb to prepare his body for permanent burial.
00:22:36
Speaker
Because remember, there hadn't been enough time before sunset on the day he was crucified, and the following two days were both Sabbath days, so no work was permitted. But the tomb was empty.
00:22:48
Speaker
And he had risen the first fruits of them that slept. And later that day, many holy people from Israel's past were seen in the city of Jerusalem, also having risen from their tombs.
00:23:01
Speaker
This is quoted in Matthew 27, verse 53. We will get to that. And this was the Lord's wave offering, a sample of his harvest of souls.
00:23:14
Speaker
So there we go.
00:23:17
Speaker
Our daily application today is that Jesus is the first fruits of those who have risen from the dead. And God's timing is perfect.
00:23:28
Speaker
Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it. And these things are all very important. So I encourage you in the coming year, as we will in next year, approach the Passover holiday and Feast of First Fruits and Shavuot, that you approach them with new understanding.
00:23:48
Speaker
with new desire to obey God and observe them the way they are meant to be observed. That we need to stop this disconnect from God's holy days, his moedim, his appointed times, to celebrate them in a secular pagan way.
00:24:06
Speaker
That doesn't mean simply observing Easter without the bunnies and the eggs and the hunts and the candy and the chocolate. It means that we need to revert we We often will pray for um revival, but historically revival comes when we have a correction of our behavior.
00:24:30
Speaker
When the people reverted to the way they were supposed to be doing things, they had reconciliation and they they went back and they corrected their behavior with the Lord. I'm drawing a blank as to my words on that.
00:24:47
Speaker
But um
00:24:53
Speaker
here we go. I knew I had it written down somewhere. If we want reformation, if we want revival, then we need reformation. Reformation means, again, revive, long live.
00:25:07
Speaker
If we want to...

Spiritual Revival and Call to Action

00:25:09
Speaker
have reformation, that is the act of changing to a better state or character, the correction of abuses or bad behavior. That is the definition of reformation.
00:25:20
Speaker
If we have reformation with restoration, a restoration is the return of something to a former, original, or unimpaired condition.
00:25:32
Speaker
That would be returning our celebration of God's holy days back to the way he intended them to be celebrated, then together that combination will equal revival.
00:25:45
Speaker
Reformation plus restoration will equal that revival that we so want to pray for. And God blesses us. Re means again, vive means to live.
00:26:00
Speaker
Isn't that interesting? We want God to restore living again, which is the joy And when people are excited about him and are wanting to share the news about him and are wanting to live their lives for him.
00:26:18
Speaker
And we can do that when we are celebrating God's days the way he intends them to be celebrated because God blesses us at these times. They're not just holidays to be celebrated.
00:26:29
Speaker
They have reasoned. And God blesses us on these days of harvest. This is a harvest celebration. It's not just a celebration of just sleeping in tents.
00:26:40
Speaker
This is the wheat harvest that we are coming up here with the Feast of Tabernacles. It's occurring at the feast where they they gather in the wheat. This is a harvest. So God blesses us at this time of the year.
00:26:53
Speaker
And God blesses our obedience to him. I know that this year i can speak personally for God's great blessings on me as I have sought to obey him better.
00:27:06
Speaker
And it has just been an incredible journey for me this year, not simply reading God's word, but understanding his expectations of me. and encouraging you as my brothers and sisters to also follow and and obey him.
00:27:24
Speaker
And so I can testify that God has blessed me a lot this year in many different ways as a result of of my obedience to his Moedim.
00:27:36
Speaker
And I want to encourage you to do the same. So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today, that you are encouraged to obey God. ah yeah You are encouraged to take tomorrow off, the 7th of October, here in 2025. I don't know what day it will be in latter years, ah but for this year in 2025, it's tomorrow.
00:27:57
Speaker
I want to encourage you to take that day off and honor God for this day and and ask him how he is going to bless you. And I hope that you have a fantastic rest of your day, that you are blessed this year as we so come to celebrate this Feast of Tabernacles.
00:28:13
Speaker
And I hope that you are encouraged to click that light button so that we can share this event. We want to spread the word about reading God's word. It's not about just clicking and forwarding through social media.
00:28:26
Speaker
It has nothing to do with gaining attention for the channel or for myself. It has to do with the goal is to read God's word, understand God's word, see how it applies to our daily life, and then to encourage others to also hear God's word because we want to encourage everybody to obey God's word, to know that Jesus came and fulfilled Passover.
00:28:53
Speaker
and the Feast of Firstfruits, so that we could be blessed at Shavuot with the Holy Spirit, which we have now. So thank you for following along, whether you have been listening on your podcast or watching on your video.
00:29:07
Speaker
And I will be here for everyone again tomorrow.
