Today's reading will comes to us from Matthew Chapter 26:21-25, Mark Chapter 14:18-21, Luke Chapter 22:21-23, and John Chapter 13:3-30.

Today's we will read about Jesus telling the disciples that one of them would betray him as well as learning how to treat one another when Jesus washes the disciples' feet and tells us that He is teaching us how to treat others. Jesus tells us today that the master is always greater than the servant and yet he, our Lord and teacher, washed his servants' feet! We have been been reading the Bible all year. The disciples have been following Jesus for a couple of years. We have learned a lot this year about how God wants us to behave, just as the disciples learned a lot from Jesus. Today Jesus taught us that God will bring good to us if we do what we know! How generous our God is! God has every right to just command us to do what is right, but instead, He leads us and teaches us and then even brings good to us if we what we know! May we all serve one another, look after one another, and care for one another in love now that we know what Jesus taught us about how to treat one another!

Jesus Teaches on Treatment and Humility

00:00:53
Speaker
Well, today we are going to be reading about Jesus teaching us how to treat one another. And I love today's reading. It's ah it's really good one.
00:01:05
Speaker
And it has a very important lesson in it in as as well. So let's go ahead and start our daily reading.
00:01:17
Speaker
Today's chapter is called Clean Feet.
00:01:22
Speaker
Now Jesus knew that God had given him power over all things. He knew he had come from God and he knew he was going back to God.
00:01:34
Speaker
Jesus got up from the table. He took a long cloth and he tied it around himself like a belt. Then he got a big bowl of water and he started washing his friend's feet.
00:01:51
Speaker
He dried their feet with the long cloth. Now soon it was Peter's turn, but Peter said, Lord, are you going to wash my feet?
00:02:04
Speaker
I know you don't understand now, said Jesus, but someday you will understand. No, said Peter, I can never let you wash my feet.
00:02:18
Speaker
Well, that means that you won't belong to me, said Jesus. You won't be a part of what I am doing. Well, then don't just wash my feet, Lord, said Peter.
00:02:31
Speaker
Wash my hands and my head too.
00:02:35
Speaker
Jesus said, people who had a bath only need to wash their feet. The rest of their body is already clean. So you're clean now, but not all of you are clean.
00:02:51
Speaker
Jesus knew which friend had turned against him. He was talking about this person's heart.
00:03:00
Speaker
Jesus finished washing his friend's feet. Then he went back to his place.
00:03:08
Speaker
Do you understand what I just did?

Importance of Serving One Another

00:03:10
Speaker
He asked. You call me teacher. You call me Lord. And that is right. That is what I am.
00:03:19
Speaker
Your Lord and your teacher just washed your feet. So you need to wash each other's feet too.
00:03:31
Speaker
I am showing you the way to treat others, said Jesus. The master is always greater than the servant. And the person who sends a message is important.
00:03:44
Speaker
He is greater than the person who receives the message.
00:03:50
Speaker
Look at what you know now, said Jesus. God will bring good to you if you do what you know.
00:04:01
Speaker
then Jesus became sad.

The Impending Betrayal and Its Impact

00:04:04
Speaker
One of you has turned against me, he said. And this will make David's psalm come true.
00:04:13
Speaker
The person who shares my bread has turned against me.
00:04:19
Speaker
I'm telling you about this before it happens. And then when it happens, you will believe that I am God's son.
00:04:28
Speaker
Jesus's friends were sad. One after another, they said, I'm sure it's not me.
00:04:37
Speaker
It's the one who ate from the bowl with me. He is the one who has turned against me, said Jesus. How sad it is for him. It would be better if he had never been born.
00:04:52
Speaker
Jesus' friends look looked around at each other. They didn't know what he was talking about. So Peter whispered to John, Ask Jesus who he is talking about.
00:05:04
Speaker
John moved close to Jesus. Lord, who is it? he asked. I will dip my bread in the dish, said Jesus, and then I will give it to someone.
00:05:18
Speaker
He is the one I am talking about.
00:05:23
Speaker
Jesus dipped his bread into the dish and he gave it to Judas. Judas took the bread and right away Satan took control of him.
00:05:34
Speaker
Judas said, I'm sure I'm not the one. Yes, you are, said Jesus. Do what you planned. Do it now.
00:05:46
Speaker
Nobody understood why Jesus said that to Judas, but Judas was in charge of the money, so some of them thought that Jesus was sending Judas out to buy something, and some thought Jesus sent him to give money to poor people.
00:06:00
Speaker
And right after Judas took the bread, left. It night. he laugh it was night
00:06:09
Speaker
That is the end of our reading today.
00:06:16
Speaker
Ah, are you getting sad too? We are so close. We are close to the time when Jesus will be taken away. It makes me a bit sad.
00:06:28
Speaker
So let's talk about what we read today.

Reflections on Service and Leadership

00:06:31
Speaker
Today we see that Jesus knew everything that was going to happen. Remember, he knew what was going to happen and he was telling the disciples ahead of time so that when the time came, they would first of all be encouraged to know that he was supposed to be coming back.
00:06:48
Speaker
This was not to be forever. this was to him This was supposed to be for him to die and to be gone for three days and then to come back. And he is telling them what is going to happen ahead of time so that when it does happen, they will believe that he is the son of God.
00:07:10
Speaker
So as Jesus has just finished dinner,
00:07:15
Speaker
or is in the middle of dinner, it looks like actually, he gets up and he gets a bowl and he gets a claw and he is washing their feet.
00:07:26
Speaker
So this was something that a servant would do. It's not something that they would expect to see their Lord and master and rabbi doing. But yet he did do it. And he said, look at what I just did.
00:07:40
Speaker
am your teacher. right am your Lord. And yet I just washed your feet. And I am greater than you. The master is always greater than the servant.
00:07:53
Speaker
And yet he washed their feet. He needed so to teach us how to treat one another. I know sometimes at church there will be foot washing so that we can take care of one another and wash our feet the way Jesus did.
00:08:11
Speaker
We don't have just barefoot and sandals anymore. We have regular shoes. But people would walk barefoot and in sandals where their feet were exposed and they would get dirty.
00:08:22
Speaker
And so when they would arrive somewhere, it it might be customary for their feet to be washed by a servant. And we know that Mary, one of the Marys, anointed his feet and wiped his feet with with her hair.
00:08:35
Speaker
And Jesus said to the man who was hosting them not to give Mary a hard time because when Jesus arrived, he didn't have his feet washed and he didn't even give him a kiss.
00:08:48
Speaker
But Mary had washed his feet and had not stopped kissing his feet.
00:08:55
Speaker
So we see that Jesus is showing us he is not too proud to do a ah task that was of ah but something that a servant would do. And Jesus taught us already that if we want to be great, we need to serve one another.
00:09:12
Speaker
So here we see that Jesus is not just telling them, he is demonstrating that if he can wash their feet, they should also look after one another and serve one another.

Encouragement to Serve and God's Rewards

00:09:25
Speaker
And that goes for us too. We are meant to serve one another. None of us is greater than the other. Jesus taught us previously that ah human leaders have a tendency to hold ah position above one another.
00:09:42
Speaker
They lord it over one another. And he said, it is not to be that way with you. You are to love one another. And that if you are wanting to be great, that you will serve one another.
00:09:55
Speaker
And Jesus tells us today, he says, look at what you know now. God will bring good things to you. God will bring good to you if you do what you know.
00:10:08
Speaker
And that applies to us as well. God will bring good to us if we do what we know. We know to treat each other well, to serve one another, to love one another.
00:10:22
Speaker
Jesus says that if we to if we do the things that we know, if we love him and obey him, and we do the things that he has taught us, that God will bring good to us if we do those things that we know that Jesus is teaching us.
00:10:41
Speaker
Isn't it amazing? God could simply ah command us to do what is right. And instead of just commanding us to do what is right, God is very generous with us and he gives us reward for being good.
00:10:56
Speaker
We are building up treasures in heaven. So I don't know about you, but I am excited to see what these treasures in heaven look like. And i I know that Jesus speaks the truth.
00:11:09
Speaker
So God brings good things to us when we are good to other people, when we do what we know. When we are feeding one another, giving water to one another, clothes.
00:11:23
Speaker
Jesus told us a day or two ago, he says that when i was hungry, you gave me something to eat. And when I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I needed a place to stay, you gave me a place to stay.
00:11:37
Speaker
and when I needed clothes, you gave me clothes to wear. When I was sick, you took care of me. And when I was in prison, you came and looked after me. When we do these things, when we look after those whose ah women who have lost their husbands and children who have lost their parents, when we look out for others, God is pleased with us and we know to do it.
00:12:03
Speaker
And when if we do what we are supposed to do, God goes above and beyond and he does good things for us.
00:12:12
Speaker
So that's our daily application today. And we should be thankful to God for all the wonderful things that he brings our way. Because he doesn't have to. But Jesus taught us that if we, being evil, know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more so does our Heavenly Father know how to give gifts to us?

God's Generosity and Call to Kindness

00:12:33
Speaker
And he is speaking about specifically there. when we ask for things. But our Heavenly Father gives us gifts that we don't even ask for, just like we give gifts to people when they don't ask for them.
00:12:47
Speaker
The things He does are even better than anything we could ever imagine or ask for or do for anybody else. Our God is so loving and generous and kind, so we know that we need to be the same just like Him.
00:13:04
Speaker
because we are not better than him. The master is always greater than the servant. He is greater than us. And yet God is generous and kind and loving, patient and faithful.
00:13:18
Speaker
He is just so wonderful. So we need to be like God. We need to be like Jesus. And even better, God will reward us for doing so. So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today and that you are encouraged to do the good that you know how to do.
00:13:38
