Feast of Sukkah Discussion

00:00:46
Speaker
We are going to take out our calendars. We are going to mark off our days. And if you have your calendar, go ahead and get that out. Get your sticker ready or whatever you're using, because we're going to hear the Bible today.
00:00:59
Speaker
I have written on my calendars the days of the Feast of Tabernacles for Sukkah. And ah today is day five. This is going to be very late by the time I get this posted, so it will be day six by the time you have a chance potentially to hear this event.
00:01:16
Speaker
this event I've been trying to get this recorded ah for a little bit now, and I'm having a great deal of difficulty with my internet cutting out. And it is ah stopping as I'm in the middle of the recording.
00:01:30
Speaker
So this is maybe, i don't know, my fifth or sixth time trying to get this recorded. And so I'm just very late getting this done today. So if you have been waiting, sorry about that.
00:01:42
Speaker
I'm going to try to make a separate video or maybe I will include the information I was trying to give in this video today about the Feast of Sukkah. This is a time of rejoicing.
00:01:55
Speaker
And let me see if I can just go ahead and include at least part of it. And maybe just not as long because I keep losing my recording and I'm getting frustrated.
00:02:07
Speaker
God tells us in the book of Leviticus and actually Exodus and Deuteronomy about observing the Feast of Sukkah.
00:02:18
Speaker
But did you know that this is meant to be a time of great joy for us? Because God wants to bless us. Does that surprise you? I know it surprised me a little bit, but I i shouldn't be surprised.
00:02:33
Speaker
And I'm sure that I've read this, but I did not remember it. And I don't know about you, but I have been finding a great deal of difficulty this week and I've been easily frustrated. And I think it's because our adversary is working triple time ah to try and discourage us from being joyful during this time of celebration.
00:02:53
Speaker
So I just wanted us to be aware of that so that we can try to nip that. And i know that for me, I've been having a real difficult time. And ah so i'm I'm going to be working hard to nip that and not let him take my my joy for this incredible event.
00:03:12
Speaker
I'm going to read and
00:03:16
Speaker
Deuteronomy chapter 16, verses 13 to 16. You are to keep the feast of Sukkah for seven days after gathering in the produce from your threshing floor and wine presses.
00:03:30
Speaker
So you will rejoice in your feast. You, your son and daughter, slave and maid, Levite and outsider, orphan and widow within your gates.
00:03:43
Speaker
Seven days you will feast to the Lord your God in the place he chooses because the Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands.
00:03:57
Speaker
And you will be completely filled with joy. Three times a year, all your males are to appear before the Lord your God in the place he chooses.
00:04:10
Speaker
There is at the feast of Matzo, feast of shava so and the feast of suah no one should appear before the lord empty-handed So if you have not already this season, let's be sure to give an extra offering to God for to thank Him for His generosity to us in so far in the in this year and in anticipation of the blessing that He will also give us because He has told us here that He will bless us
00:04:42
Speaker
He says he wants to bless us. Our God is so giving. He is so generous and so gracious. i i just, I love our God. He is just so amazing.
00:04:56
Speaker
Jesus told us that even if we, who are evil, know how to give good gifts, and He specifically says to our children, but the concept is the same. If we know how to give good gifts, and and we are not fabulous like God is fabulous, how much more so does our God in heaven know how to give us good gifts?

Comparison to Thanksgiving and Significance

00:05:21
Speaker
He is so thoughtful and generous for us. And so we need to be thankful to him during this time to remember his generosity toward us. This is actually considered like the the Jewish or the biblical Thanksgiving.
00:05:37
Speaker
Did you know that?
00:05:39
Speaker
I love this. This is great. So thank you, God, for all of your generosity to us. And here we are going to read today in our reading in Acts chapter 2 about his generosity in his outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
00:05:56
Speaker
Before we begin with our chapter today, I wanted to give a little bit of a correction that yesterday I misspoke and said that the book of Acts was written by John.
00:06:07
Speaker
And it's not actually written by John, it was written by Luke. So I just wanted to be sure i gave us the correct information and sorry about that. Yesterday I gave the wrong information. I always want to think it's John who wrote Acts, but it's not John, it was Luke.
00:06:22
Speaker
So when I was reading my introduction today ah to the book of Acts, which I usually do before I start, ah and I didn't this time, that's where it said that it was written by Luke. So I was like, oh, shoot, I was wrong.
00:06:35
Speaker
So sorry about that. So today's reading comes to us from chapter 2 of Acts.

Events of Acts Chapter 2

00:06:41
Speaker
And I'm going to be including some of our big Bible today too. Because it does not include all of the prophecy that is fulfilled.
00:06:50
Speaker
And so I think that's important for us to know.
00:06:55
Speaker
So here we go. it says in Acts chapter 2 that it was time for the holiday of weeks. that That is Shavuot. And Jesus' friends, the disciples, got together at someone's house.
00:07:10
Speaker
When all of a sudden, they heard a sound. The sound came from heaven. And it filled the whole house. And then they saw something that looked like fire.
00:07:24
Speaker
The fire broke into different parts. And it came to sit on each of them, each one of the twelve disciples. Then God's Holy Spirit filled them.
00:07:38
Speaker
They started talking in different languages. And God's Spirit made them able to do this. Jews from every country were in Jerusalem because they had come for the holiday.
00:07:51
Speaker
And they were people who worshipped God. They heard the sound too. And they wondered about it.
00:08:00
Speaker
Now soon a crowd of people gathered around the disciples and they heard the disciples talking in the language that they could understand. The people were very surprised.
00:08:13
Speaker
Aren't these men from around here? They asked. Why do we hear them talking in our own language? People from all nations are hearing them talking about God's wonders and we can understand them.
00:08:30
Speaker
and people didn't know what to think. What do you think it means? They asked each other. Now, some people laughed at Jesus's friends because they thought that they've just had too much wine to drink, they said.
00:08:45
Speaker
But Peter stood up with the other 11 apostles and he talked loudly to the big crowd. Let me tell you about this, he said, and listen very carefully.
00:08:59
Speaker
These men are not drunk like you think they are. After all, it's only nine o'clock in the morning. Long ago, Joel told about God's plans, said Peter.
00:09:14
Speaker
You are seeing what the prophet Joel wrote about. And he wrote what God said. My spirit will flow out on all people.
00:09:26
Speaker
Your children will tell my plans. Your young men will have dreams even when they are awake. My spirit will flow out on all my servants.
00:09:38
Speaker
Men and women will tell my plans. I will show you wonders in the sky. i will show you signs on the earth. The sun will get dark.
00:09:51
Speaker
The moon will look like blood. And that will happen before the Lord's great day comes. Everyone who calls on the Lord's name will be saved.
00:10:05
Speaker
And this was quoted in Joel 31 verses 1 through 5.
00:10:11
Speaker
So listen, you people of God, said Peter. God showed you how special Jesus is by the wonders he did. And God did these things through Jesus.
00:10:23
Speaker
God had a plan, said Peter. And because of God's plan, Jesus was given to you. And sinful men helped you kill him on the cross.
00:10:35
Speaker
But God brought him back to life again. And he set Jesus free from death. There was no way death could keep him down.
00:10:48
Speaker
And here I'm going to insert Acts chapter 2, verses 25 through 31.
00:11:00
Speaker
David said about him, I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand, so that I might not be shaken.
00:11:12
Speaker
Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced. Moreover, my body will also live in hope, because you will not abandon my soul to hell. And this was the of and you will fill me with joy in your presence and this was the fulfilment of psalms sixteen verses eight through eleven
00:11:49
Speaker
Peter goes on to tell us in verse 29. Brothers, I can confidently tell you that the patriarch David died and was buried. His tomb is with us to this day.
00:12:01
Speaker
So because he was a prophet and knew God had sworn with an oath to seat him ah swoden with an oath to him to seat one of his descendants on his throne, David saw beforehand and spoke of Messiah's resurrection that he was not abandoned to hell and his body did not see decay.
00:12:27
Speaker
Jesus was not left in the grave, said Peter. His body did not waste away. God brought him back to life again, and all of us can tell you that we saw him.
00:12:40
Speaker
And Jesus is beside God now, said Peter. His father gave him the Holy Spirit as he promised. And Jesus has now given us that spirit.
00:12:54
Speaker
And that is what you are seeing and hearing now.
00:13:01
Speaker
going to pick up in our big Bible to add verses 34. For David did not ascend into the heavens, yet he himself says, the lord said to my lord The Lord God said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.
00:13:24
Speaker
Now it's important to note that that is Psalm 110. verse verse one And while Peter only quotes the verse 1 out of that psalm, the entire psalm is actually about Jesus.
00:13:41
Speaker
And in verse two of that Psalm and following it's, and we will actually cover in the book of Hebrews when the author of Hebrews, with whom we do not know who that is, tells us about the rest of that Psalm.
00:13:57
Speaker
It says, Adonai will extend your mighty rod from Zion rule in the midst of your enemies. Your people will be a freewill offering in a day of your power.
00:14:09
Speaker
In holy splendor from dawn's womb, yours is the dew of your youth. The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind. You, being Jesus, are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.
00:14:27
Speaker
My Lord is at your right hand. David says, My Lord, meaning Jesus, is at your right hand. He will shatter kings in the day of his wrath. And he will judge among the nations, heaping up corpses.
00:14:41
Speaker
And he will crush heads over the entire land. And he will drink from a stream along the way, so his head will be exalted.

Peter's Call to Repentance

00:14:57
Speaker
You killed Jesus, said Peter, but God has made him the Lord. People were very sad when they heard this, what Peter was telling them. What will we do?
00:15:09
Speaker
They asked his friends, the disciples. And Peter answered, Be sorry. Change your ways. Be baptized in Jesus' name, all of you, and then he will forgive your sins.
00:15:27
Speaker
then you will get the gift of God's Holy Spirit. And that's a promise. This gift is for you and your children. It's for people near and far.
00:15:41
Speaker
It's for anybody God calls into his kingdom. Peter talked to the people about lots of things. Save yourselves from this sinful world, he said.
00:15:55
Speaker
He actually begged, says. People who believed were baptized there to-day that day. And about 3,000 people came into God's kingdom that day. And those people listened to the apostles' teaching.
00:16:12
Speaker
And then they got together to talk and to eat and pray with one another. And everybody had a feeling of wonder.
00:16:22
Speaker
Jesus' 12 disciples did lots of miracles. And people who believed shared what they had with one another. They even sold what they had and they gave to people who needed help.
00:16:37
Speaker
They kept meeting every day at the worship house together. They ate together in their homes. They were happy and their love for Jesus was real. And they praised god All people said good things about Jesus' followers.
00:16:56
Speaker
And every day, more people were saved. And God added them to his kingdom.
00:17:06
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:17:11
Speaker
Isn't that a joyful reading today? i cannot imagine something more joyful at on end during our Feast of Sukkah to be reading about. Can you?
00:17:23
Speaker
ah it's so wonderful.
00:17:27
Speaker
What do you think we should have for our daily application today? i bet there is a lot for you to learn. There's a lot for all of us to learn. Well, we we learned that God fulfilled prophecy that he gave to Joel.
00:17:45
Speaker
And we saw that the Psalms were also being fulfilled. But do you see what happened when they heard the truth? When the people heard, they received it and they were joyful and they became believers and they immediately were baptized.
00:18:03
Speaker
And it says that once they did, they had such great joy with one another. They were eating together. They were selling what they had and helping one another. They had such a great love for God.
00:18:20
Speaker
And they their love for Jesus was real. ah love how that is noted in there. Their love for Jesus was real. And they praised God. And every day, more people were saved.
00:18:34
Speaker
And God added them to his kingdom.
00:18:39
Speaker
But I think our big daily application today is that it says that this gift, it says when we are sorry for our sins, we change our ways.
00:18:54
Speaker
We need to change our ways. If you have not already, I want to encourage you to be baptized in Jesus's name. And God forgives our sins.
00:19:06
Speaker
And then we get the gift of the Holy Spirit. So if you are here today, you may already be a believer and you may already have God's Spirit. But if you are not yet a believer, then this is especially for you.
00:19:20
Speaker
But this is important for all of us to know. It's not just for some people. It's for everybody. Peter explains to us that this gift is for you, it's for your children, it's for people near and far, and it's for anybody.
00:19:38
Speaker
God calls into his kingdom. Do you hear God's calling you into his kingdom today? You can believe and receive Jesus as your Savior.
00:19:50
Speaker
He is our Messiah. And then you too will receive the Holy Spirit. When I was about 15, I had known about God, but I had not come to what we would call my own personal relationship with Jesus yet.

Personal Testimony and Invitation to Faith

00:20:06
Speaker
I had not accepted him as my savior. I i knew about him. We celebrated Christmas. I knew the story. i had been in the play as a kid. I was a little dove in kindergarten, I think, when we did the play.
00:20:20
Speaker
But you know we until I had reached kind of what we call our age of accountability, where I had to make my own decision and decide that this was something I wanted to do.
00:20:32
Speaker
Once I did that, it wasn't anything fancy either. i was just, I was confused and I was just, i just wasn't even sure. And God is so faithful.
00:20:44
Speaker
that he honored my my prayer for him. It doesn't have to be something specific. I said to him, i said, God, I don't know, Jesus, I don't know if you're real or not, but if you are, then I need you and I want you.
00:21:00
Speaker
I need this in my life. And I will tell you, I could feel the receipt of the God's Holy Spirit right then and there. And it was joy. and I could feel the difference.
00:21:13
Speaker
It was amazing. And I was so filled with God's joy. So i can that is my testimony, that I know that that is a gift for everybody.
00:21:27
Speaker
Because I remember just praying that and saying, God, I don't even know for sure. but if you are real, I need you. And and that that receipt of the Holy Spirit was so real.
00:21:41
Speaker
And I'm so grateful that we have God's Holy Spirit with us today. ah he's He teaches me. he He guides me. He corrects me.
00:21:53
Speaker
and ah he just he does so much, the Holy Spirit. So if you are listening or watching and you're thinking, well, that's not possible. It's not real. right It actually really is.
00:22:06
Speaker
It's not something we just talk about. really is real and you will feel the difference. and So I want you to know that. So if you are not already a believer, let's pray. And you can say, Lord, I've been hearing about you.
00:22:25
Speaker
I want to to be safe from my sins. I want to be sorry. I'm I've done things that I'm not proud of. And you can see, I'm just, it doesn't have to be something specific, just that I i want to believe in you.
00:22:43
Speaker
Change me. And I want to receive you in my life. And I want to receive your Holy Spirit in me.
00:22:55
Speaker
There you go. That was very, um ad lib there. So I wasn't sure exactly what to say in that moment, but it it doesn't really matter. I just want to show that it's, it doesn't have to be a specific word by word.
00:23:10
Speaker
Um, anything. God knows your heart. He knows, he knew my heart. So you just say whatever is in your heart and you will receive God's Holy Spirit.
00:23:22
Speaker
Once you are ready to do that. He says it's for everybody that God calls into his kingdom. And I think he's calling you.

Conclusion and Next Steps

00:23:33
Speaker
Well, I hope that you have enjoyed our reading today. i hope that you feel God has lit your light today. and I hope that you have found daily application in our reading today. i hope you are enjoying our Feast of Tabernacles during this time of Sukkah as we tabernacle with the Lord.
00:23:51
Speaker
I know I have got my tent set up in the backyard and I am enjoying our time together out there. It was a really nice night for me out here in San Diego yesterday.
00:24:02
Speaker
it was It was really actually pretty warm. It was still in like the 60s overnight, so it was pretty nice. So if you are encouraged today, i would like to encourage you to click your light button so that we can spread the word about reading God's word so that other people will also know that this is for them.
00:24:23
Speaker
This is for anybody. And I just want to be an encouragement. I know not very fancy there, mike my spur of the moment prayer. so on But it's okay.
00:24:36
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today for this October 11th daily reading through our day-by-day kids Bible written by Karen Henley. I will be here again for tomorrow's daily reading, and I'm just glad that you're joining me here whatever day you get around to listening or watching.
