Today's reading will cover John Chapter 20:2-18 and Matthew Chapter 28:11-15.

Today we will read about the disbelief and doubt and lack of understanding both the people closest to Jesus and the Jewish leaders had on the third day, the day Jesus rose from the dead.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how we, too, can lack understanding in difficult circumstances and experience doubt, disbelief, and discouragement even though we KNOW that God is in control and knows the plans He has for us- not to hurt us, but plans to prosper us. As much as we want to believe during difficult times it can, indeed, be difficult to stay focused on our faith in God. During these times it is especially important that we remember God's faithfulness to us and be faithful in our trust in Him, even though we cannot see the big picture and don't know what God will do until we can see it. Like Naomi and Ruth returning to Jerusalem without husbands or sons so that Boaz would redeem Naomi's field and marry Ruth, together becoming the ancestors to Jesus, we cannot always see or know what God's plan is for us, but we CAN trust in Him, knowing that God absolutely WILL work good into everything, even though it seems "bad" to us.

Introduction to the Feast of Tabernacles

00:00:02
Speaker
Shabbat Shalom everybody! Today is October Today is the first day of the Feast of Tents or also known as the Feast of Tabernacles.
00:00:14
Speaker
I hope you are having a very blessed day today.

God's Appointed Times

00:00:17
Speaker
Today is the third Moedim, God's appointed time for the year. The first was Passover, then we had Shavuot, and now we have the Feast of Tabernacles.
00:00:29
Speaker
This is a reminder both that God dwelled with the people for 40 years in the desert as the cloud in the in the cloud above them. And he was a pillar of fire by night and a cloud of covering from the sun for them by day.
00:00:47
Speaker
God dwelled with his people there. And he asked us, actually he commanded us to observe this feast of the tabernacles, this feast of tents, ah for seven days every year at this time in order that we would remember this.

Unfulfilled Prophecy of the Feast of Tabernacles

00:01:04
Speaker
And this is also to remind us that he is going to tabernacle with us again when Jesus returns. So we are waiting for that time. so while Passover has been fulfilled and first fruits has been fulfilled and Shavuot has been fulfilled,
00:01:22
Speaker
The Feast of Tabernacles has yet to be fulfilled, but Jesus will be coming again. And we're going to read a little bit more about that today in our reading.
00:01:33
Speaker
So if you are following along, oh, first, let's say what we're reading.

Introducing 'Day by Day Kids Bible'

00:01:38
Speaker
Thank you for joining me today as we have our daily Bible reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:01:46
Speaker
This is a chronological Bible. It's written in storybook form, and it's a little bit condensed, but it gives us the entire big story all the way through God's great, wonderful Bible.
00:02:00
Speaker
And if you are following along and marking off your days on your commitment calendar or just keeping track of your days on your calendar like a bookmark, go ahead and get that out. Get your sticker or whatever you're using to mark off those days because we are about to hear the Bible today.

Challenges to Faith in Tough Times

00:02:20
Speaker
Today we are going to be reading about disbelief, unbelief, doubts. None of us is perfect and we can really have doubts when times are tough.
00:02:32
Speaker
We may know sometimes in our head what we have read, but it can be hard sometimes when we were are experiencing a difficult time to remember that God is in charge and that he has a plan for us and that no matter what, even though things look bad, it actually, God is going to work good right into it.
00:02:53
Speaker
And it can be hard to remember that when we're right in the middle of it and we're frustrated or we're scared and we're maybe we're angry about something. or We just don't understand.
00:03:04
Speaker
And this is what we are going to see that the disciples were experiencing during this difficult time until they saw Jesus again.

Discovery of the Empty Tomb

00:03:18
Speaker
So today we're going to pick up with Mary Magdalene. She went running to Peter and to John. And she said to them, someone took Jesus's body out of the grave.
00:03:29
Speaker
We don't know where he took it. Peter and John ran to the grave. Now John ran faster than Peter, so he got there first. But he didn't go in.
00:03:41
Speaker
Peter, when he arrived, he went in. But John, he just bent over and looked inside at first. And he saw the cloth that had been around Jesus's body.
00:03:54
Speaker
But then Peter got there and he went right in. He saw the cloth lying there too. And he saw the cloth that had been around Jesus's head.
00:04:05
Speaker
It was folded up and was lying by itself. At last, John went inside. He saw the grave and he believed, but he still didn't, but they neither Peter nor John understood yet.
00:04:21
Speaker
They still didn't understand. They hadn't known that Jesus would come back to life.
00:04:29
Speaker
Peter and John went back home, but Mary Magdalene stayed there. She stood outside the grave and she cried. eight Then she bent over and she looked inside the grave.
00:04:43
Speaker
There she saw two angels. They wore white clothes and they sat where the body of Jesus had been.

Resurrection Encounters

00:04:53
Speaker
One angel sat where his head had been and the other angel sat where his feet had been.
00:05:00
Speaker
Why are you crying? asked the angels. Somebody took Jesus's body away, said Mary, and I don't know where they took it. Mary turned around and she saw a man.
00:05:15
Speaker
It was Jesus standing there, but Mary didn't know that it was Jesus. Why are you crying? asked Jesus. Who are you looking for?
00:05:29
Speaker
Mary thought he was the gardener. So she asked him, did you take Jesus's body away? If you did, please tell me where you put it and I will come and get it.
00:05:41
Speaker
Mary, said Jesus. And then Mary looked. She looked at Jesus. Teacher, she cried. Don't try to hold on to me, said Jesus, because I haven't yet gone back to my father.
00:05:58
Speaker
Go and find my friends and tell them I am going to my father and to your father. i am going to my God and your God. So Mary hurried to find Jesus's friends, the disciples.
00:06:14
Speaker
I've seen Jesus, she said, and she told them what Jesus had said to her.
00:06:21
Speaker
The guards' story.

Conspiracy to Hide the Resurrection

00:06:24
Speaker
Now some of the guards went back into the city and they told some leaders at the worship house what had happened. The leaders made a plan.
00:06:33
Speaker
They paid the guards lots of money to tell a lie. The leaders made up a story for the guards to tell. You are to say that Jesus' friends came in the night while you were sleeping and say that Jesus' friends took the body away.
00:06:52
Speaker
Now, Pilate might hear about what happened, said the leaders. But we will take care of Pilate. We will make sure you stay out of trouble, the Jewish leaders told them.
00:07:03
Speaker
So the guards took the money and they said just what the leaders told them to say. They told their story to many of the Jewish people. And these people still tell that story even today.
00:07:20
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Struggles with Belief Post-Resurrection

00:07:25
Speaker
Wow.
00:07:27
Speaker
There's a lot of unbelief. Nobody knows quite what to make of what's going on. Now, the guards, they had seen an angel roll the rock back. And the leaders, even though they were told this story, they did not believe.
00:07:43
Speaker
And because they did not believe, They paid the guards to lie, and this lie would lead many people astray.
00:07:55
Speaker
Doubt. Unbelief. Lying.
00:08:01
Speaker
Mary had seen the angels and they had told her not to worry, to go get Jesus's friends. So she went and yet she was still confused. She didn't understand.
00:08:13
Speaker
And she was more concerned about where the physical body was than what was going on. And now she was you not even able to see Jesus at first. And we will see the same thing happen with the disciples when they finally get to see Jesus too.
00:08:29
Speaker
but They looked and although they believed, they still didn't understand. How many times have we been in that exact same situation where we believe, we don't understand, and so we have doubts.

Personal Faith Struggles

00:08:44
Speaker
We're confused. We don't know what we're doing. when we're having a difficult experience and we want to trust that God knows what he's doing with us, we want to have faith that we believe that God is taking care of us and that he's in charge of whatever situation.
00:09:00
Speaker
And yet it just, it's so irritating to us, whatever the situation may be. and and we just want things to be the way we want things to be. The disciples wanted things to be the way they wanted them to be, but that was not the way God had intended it.
00:09:16
Speaker
We don't know and understand what we can't see. That's where faith comes in. And Jesus will tell them tomorrow, you don't have any faith.
00:09:28
Speaker
I told you these things would have to happen. How many times have people told us to be in good spirits? Don't worry. God has everything under control.
00:09:39
Speaker
But when we're in the middle of tough situations, we still have trouble with that, don't we? I know I do. Right now, i'm I'm still stuck with a an an unresolved insurance claim because somebody smashed into our car and they have still yet to pay us for the damages to our vehicle even though it's been three months now and we're still waiting and i keep but alternating between being frustrated and saying god's timing is perfect god's timing is perfect and it's so hard for me to remember that because i'm like
00:10:17
Speaker
Why can't they just get it done? what God, what is your timing? Why are you waiting for just this time? i don't know. God knows though. And then we had to do what's called a forced retention, where they told us that no matter what, now they're not going to have enough money to get rid of our car. So now it became our responsibility to get rid of the car.
00:10:42
Speaker
And we had to get rid of a car that, you know, smashed. And so it's been sitting in my front yard for three months, an eyesore. And then I became very angry when I learned about that. And I was like, oh, this is ridiculous.
00:10:55
Speaker
I don't wanna have to get rid of this. Why is this becoming my problem? And God reminded me, he said, look, I know it looks inconvenient to you. he says, but trust me, this will work out to be in your favor. I know the plans I have for you.
00:11:10
Speaker
i know the plans I

Ruth and Naomi: God's Plan in Action

00:11:11
Speaker
have for you. God knows the plans he has for you too. And so today, on the first day of the Feast of Tabernacles, I was finally able to get rid of that car.
00:11:23
Speaker
And it was very close to the amount that I was hoping we would be able to get to get rid of it. And again, it happened with circumstances that just did not seem very favorable.
00:11:35
Speaker
But I'm always reminded that just like when um when Ruth and Naomi were... and in In Naomi's land, in Ruth's land, rather. I'm drawing a blank as to where Ruth was from.
00:11:52
Speaker
ah But she had married Ruth's, ah she had married, Ruth had married Naomi's son. And Naomi had lost her husband and both of her sons. And she had said that she was and leaving, that she had left Jerusalem with the with her husband and her two sons, and now she was going back empty handed.
00:12:14
Speaker
And she was very sad. and so the But the famine was over, so they went back to Jerusalem. And Ruth insisted upon going with her. And had her sons not died and her husband, then it would not have been the circumstances that needed to occur in order for Ruth to marry Boaz.
00:12:38
Speaker
And then Boaz redeemed the land, the field that was owned by Naomi. And then with it, Mary Ruth and Ruth was, ah I believe it was the grandmother or a great grandmother.
00:12:52
Speaker
She was, they were the father of Jesse. Ruth and Naomi were the father of Jesse, who, um, was the father, ah to Joseph, I think it was.
00:13:04
Speaker
And then. the father, and then ah Jesus was born. He was a couple of generations out. But at any rate, the point is that Ruth then became the descendant, or the the ancestor rather, of Jesus.
00:13:18
Speaker
And that's how God fulfilled this family line. So it was really interesting you know to see, and we' saw that's always my example, is that things look terrible, but God works good into everything. God has a plan. He knows the plans he has for us.
00:13:36
Speaker
And in the same instance, we see that God knew the plans that he had for our redemption and our salvation. And even though Jesus had told the disciples that This is what must occur. I must fulfill all of the prophecies about me written in the law and by the prophets and in the Psalms.
00:13:56
Speaker
And then i will, I must die, but that I will be back in three days. They still didn't quite believe that. They didn't understand.

Trusting God's Plans

00:14:06
Speaker
And so we want to be sure that we use these examples to remember and to to remind ourselves and to let the Holy Spirit remind us to hear that and believe, have faith, that even though it doesn't look like things are going to work out well, God will honor our faith when we believe and trust in him, knowing that even though things look bad to us, God indeed knows the plans he has for our lives.
00:14:37
Speaker
plans to prosper us, not to hurt us. God loves us so much. We just can't understand how much he loves us and how intricately he has um involvement in our daily lives.
00:14:55
Speaker
So I want us to be encouraged in that for our daily application today. Well, I do hope that you feel that God has lit your light on this first day of the Feast of Tabernacles.
00:15:06
Speaker
Today is a special Shabbat rest. It's a Sabbath rest. And that is why I greeted us with Shabbat Shalom. Peace for our Sabbath. I had some difficulties today. I'll tell you what, trying to set my tent up and everything in the backyard.
00:15:21
Speaker
I discovered we had a lot of red ants out there. i spent time trying to get rid of red ants. I don't want to be bit by red ants by our... Sukkah and my staying in our sukkah in the backyard, which happened to be right at the the place where I had cleared the weeds so that I could put down our sukkah, our tent.
00:15:41
Speaker
And I'm just trusting in the Lord. So I pray that you are enjoying your Feast of Tabernacles today. We ate dinner as a family, my husband and i out in our sukkah tonight.
00:15:53
Speaker
And i believe he will be joining me out there tonight. And honestly, we've just had a really enjoyable evening together since he got home. I had a quick fix meal that we'd put in the oven that we'd picked up from Costco yesterday.
00:16:07
Speaker
And it was just really, really a blessing. So I am really enjoying my first Feast of the Tabernacles celebration because I've not done this before.
00:16:20
Speaker
And I'm just really excited to be doing this with the Lord. So I hope that you are too. And I hope that you are observing it today, wherever you are.

Sharing the Message of Faith

00:16:29

00:17:10
Speaker
Have a great rest of your night, and I will see you tomorrow.
