Today's reading will comes to us from Matthew Chapters 27:24-38, Mark Chapters 15:15-27, Luke Chapter 22:24-34 and John Chapter 19:1-24 We will also look at Isaiah 53:7.

Today we will read about two more prophesies being fulfilled in Isaiah 53:7 when Jesus was taken to Pilate and Herod for questioning and did not answer, but like a sheep led to the slaughter or being sheared, Jesus was silent; he was oppressed and afflicted. We will also read about how obvious the envy was that the religious leaders had for Jesus. They did not want people following him; they wanted people to follow THEM. We need to make sure that as we point people to Jesus that we are not actually pointing people to follow US, especially in today's social media age of the desire to amass "followers." Jesus is who we need to be pointing people to, not ourselves!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the statement that Jesus DID make, that His kingdom is not of this world. That He was born to be the king and show the truth to anybody who wants truth and listens to him. Pilate then answered, "What is truth?" Today people are still asking what truth is and claim that truth is in they eyes of the beholder. This is simply not true! Truth is not subjective to our perspective! JESUS IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIGHT! NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH HIM. Choose the narrow gate, dear brothers and sisters. CHOOSE THE TRUTH OF JESUS and let others know that HE is the Way, the Truth, and the Light of the World!

00:01:21
Speaker
Because we're about to hear the Bible today.

Jesus' Trials: Pilate and Herod's Roles

00:01:28
Speaker
Today's reading picks up with Jesus being sent by the leaders to both Pilate and then referred to ah Herod and then back to Pilate for his sentencing.
00:01:41
Speaker
Today we are going to see that neither Pilate nor Herod can find any basis for a sentence of death against Jesus. And it is only through the insistence by the religious leaders who are then inciting the people to push for the sentence of death for Jesus.
00:02:03
Speaker
And we will see that it's really interesting. I never noticed this before in my reading, but ah it was so obvious to everybody that the religious leaders were behaving out of envy, out of jealousy for Jesus, that they didn't want the people following him.
00:02:25
Speaker
They wanted people to follow them. And so we're going to be seeing that. And you know, we can experience this in our own lives too, that when we are doing a good job with something, for instance, and people see that we're doing a good job and they start putting their support behind whatever project we are doing, other people can become jealous and they may not like the fact that we are successful.
00:02:52
Speaker
I can think of at least one other biblical person who experienced these things, and that was Joseph. Joseph was experiencing... um condemnation at and ah ah through lies. and But God used everything in his life for good.
00:03:10
Speaker
So everything he was doing was successful. And when the woman, the wife of the person he presently belonged to, ah was upset at the fact that he was honorable and wouldn't commit adultery with her, she accused him falsely.
00:03:28
Speaker
And then he ended up in jail. And here we see that Jesus is also being accused falsely, but with a greater penalty of death. And they were claiming that he was blaspheming by claiming that he is the son of God.
00:03:45
Speaker
And had he been anybody else, this would have been blasphemy. But as Jesus has noted many times, they would neither believe him and his claims based on his words, nor even by his actions.

Envy of Religious Leaders: Jesus and Joseph's Stories

00:03:59
Speaker
And he said, if you don't believe by my words, at least believe by the wonders that I have done. And we see here that they simply don't want to ah believe because that would mean that they would become less important.
00:04:14
Speaker
In our own lives, too, we are meant to become less important. And God and Jesus are to become more important. And this is part of us losing our self to become ah more like Jesus.
00:04:31
Speaker
And it becomes where we give up doing the things that we want to do, our own will, in exchange for doing what God and Jesus want us to do.
00:04:42
Speaker
So the difference between Jesus and and the ah leaders here is that the leaders wanted the attention on themselves themselves. And Jesus spoke about this as well, too.
00:04:55
Speaker
And instead of Jesus wanting attention for himself, he says, I did not come to glorify myself. I came to glorify God, but God will glorify me. Not me, Robin, but Jesus is saying that God would glorify him.
00:05:10
Speaker
And that's exactly what was going to happen. But we see that it was so obvious that their behavior was so obvious that even Pilate and Herod could see that they were acting out of envy.
00:05:23
Speaker
So let's go ahead and pick up in our reading today. The Jewish leaders took Jesus to Pilate, and he was the Roman leader in charge of the people in Jerusalem.
00:05:36
Speaker
It was early in the morning now, and Pilate was not Jewish, so the Jewish leaders wouldn't go into Pilate's palace, because if they went in, then they would not be able to eat the Passover dinner.
00:05:48
Speaker
They would be considered ceremonially unclean. So Pilate came out to them. "'What did this man do wrong?' he asked." This man has turned against our whole nation, he said.
00:06:02
Speaker
He tells us we shouldn't pay taxes. That's a lie. He says he is the one God promised to send, and he says he is a king. Take him yourself, said Pilate, and you can judge him by your own law.
00:06:17
Speaker
We aren't allowed to kill anybody, the Jewish leader said. So Pilate went back into his palace, and he called Jesus to him. Are you really the king of the Jews?
00:06:30
Speaker
He asked. Do you want to know for yourself? Asked Jesus. Or are you asking because somebody else wanted you to? Am I Jewish?
00:06:41
Speaker
Pilate asked him. Your people and leaders brought you here. And I'm telling you that what they told me. What have you done? i have a kingdom, said Jesus.
00:06:53
Speaker
But it is not from this world. What would happen if my kingdom were of this world? Then my servants would be fighting right now, and I wouldn't have been caught by the Jewish leaders.
00:07:06
Speaker
But my kingdom is from a different place.
00:07:11
Speaker
Then you are a king? asked Pilate. Yes, said Jesus, and that's why I was born. That's why I came to the world. I came to show the truth, and anybody who wants truth will listen to me.
00:07:30
Speaker
What is truth? Pilate asked, and then he went back out to the Jews. I see no reason to blame this man for anything, he said. But the Jewish leaders from the worship house kept blaming Jesus, and Jesus wouldn't say anything to answer them.
00:07:49
Speaker
This was to fulfill Isaiah 53, verse 7, just so you know. Now don't you hear what they're saying about you? asked Pilate. And Jesus still didn't say anything.
00:08:04
Speaker
And Pilate was surprised. The leaders kept saying, this man is fooling the people. He gets them to follow him. And he started in Galilee. And now he's come all the way down here.
00:08:17
Speaker
Now, King Herod was the Roman leader who was in charge of Galilee. So Pilate thought, well, maybe Herod should question Jesus. And Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at that time.

Pilate's Dilemma and Herod's Mockery

00:08:29
Speaker
So Herod was happy to see Jesus because he had wanted to see Jesus for a long time. He had wanted to see and because he had heard about Jesus and he hoped that he could see Jesus do a wonder.
00:08:43
Speaker
So he asked Jesus lots of questions, but Jesus wouldn't answer him. Again, fulfilling Isaiah 53 chapter of verse 7. We'll get to that later. The Jewish leaders were standing there and they were telling Herod that Jesus had done wrong things.
00:09:02
Speaker
So Herod's guards made fun of Jesus. They put a king's robe on him, and then they sent him back to Pilate. Now Herod and Pilate had been enemies, but that day they became friends.
00:09:18
Speaker
Now Pilate's wife sent him a message. It said, Do not have anything to do with Jesus. He hasn't done anything wrong. And I had a dream about him last night, and it made me feel terrible.
00:09:34
Speaker
So Pilate called the Jewish leaders together and he said, You brought this man to me. He may have upset the people and he may have gotten people to follow him, but I talked to him and I cannot find that he has done anything wrong.
00:09:51
Speaker
And Herod didn't find that he had done anything wrong either, said Pilate. Herod sent him back to us and Jesus hasn't done anything he should be killed for. So I'll just have some um men beat him.
00:10:04
Speaker
And then i will just let him go. Now every year, Pilate would let somebody free. and he let one person out of jail. And this person was always someone that the people asked for. This was the tradition at the Passover feast.
00:10:21
Speaker
How about the king of the Jews? asked Pilate. Shall I let him go free? He was talking about Jesus, and he knew why the worship house leaders had brought Jesus to him, because they wished people would follow them instead of Jesus.
00:10:36
Speaker
Our big Bible says that they did this out of it envy for him. Now these leaders got the crowd upset, and the leaders told the people to ask for Barabbas instead.
00:10:48
Speaker
So the crowd shouted, No, not Jesus! We want Barabbas! and they cried out, take Jesus away, set Barabbas free, give Barabbas to us. Now Barabbas had made lots of people turn against the king and his followers had even killed people in their fights.
00:11:07
Speaker
And that is why Barabbas was in jail. Well, then what should I do with Jesus? asked Pilate. Kill him, they cried. But asked Pilate.
00:11:19
Speaker
What has he done that's so bad? Pilate wanted to let Jesus go. The crowd just shouted, kill him, kill him.
00:11:31
Speaker
And this would also be to fulfill prophecy. And that is the end of our reading today.
00:11:40
Speaker
We are going to look at our big Bible today. And I believe it is in the book of John.
00:11:55
Speaker
It's important to realize, and it's written in our big writing in John, that nobody has any authority for which God has not given them. So again, we see that this was all going down ah according to God's will, that God knew what was going to happen.
00:12:12
Speaker
The people's hearts were hard. And even though these people who were not believers, Pilate and Herod, saw no basis to send him to death, They were actually a little bit concerned, Pilate was, especially since his wife had told him, don't have anything to do with killing this righteous man because I've had a bad dream.

Prophecies Fulfilled Through Jesus' Crucifixion

00:12:31
Speaker
But we know that it was necessary for Jesus to die. So we're going to look at John chapter 19 and we're going to start at the beginning of chapter 19. So Pilate took Yeshua and had him scourged, that's whipped.
00:12:47
Speaker
And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and dressed him in a purple robe. And they kept coming up to him saying, hail king of the Jews and slapping him over and over, which we'll talk about in a few minutes.
00:13:03
Speaker
Now Pilate came out again and he said to the leaders, Look, I'm bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no case against him. So Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.
00:13:17
Speaker
Behold the man, Pilate said to them. And when the ruling priests and officers saw him, they yelled out, Execute him, execute him. Now Pilate said to them, take him yourselves and execute him, for ah I do not find a case against him.
00:13:35
Speaker
But the Judean leaders answered him, saying, we have a law. And according to the Torah, he must die because he claimed to be the son of God. And this was the law that was written in the book of Leviticus.
00:13:48
Speaker
So when Pilate heard this word that Jesus claimed to be the son of God, remember they believed in a lot of gods. So they were fine with the Jewish people having quote, their God.
00:13:59
Speaker
And so here was somebody who he couldn't find anything fault worthy with that supposedly he was being condemned because he had claimed to be a son of a God. Now it was very customary we know for Kings to claim that they were related to gods.
00:14:14
Speaker
So they were claiming that he was claiming to be king of the Jews and on that basis because he was the son of God. So he was a little concerned about that. And when Pilate heard this word, he became even more fearful, it says in verse 8.
00:14:28
Speaker
So he went into the praetorium again, his palace, and he said to Jesus, "'Where are you from?' But Jesus gave him no answer.
00:14:39
Speaker
So Pilate said to him, You aren't speaking to me? Don't you know that I have the authority to release you? And have the authority to crucify you.
00:14:51
Speaker
But Jesus answered him and said, You would have no authority over me if it hadn't been given to you from above. For this reason, the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.
00:15:07
Speaker
So Jesus knew that Pilate was not wanting to go through and and sentence him. And from what I can see, Jesus is concerned even for him.
00:15:18
Speaker
Pilate is trying to find a way where he just says, look, I cannot allow this to happen. And Jesus, knowing that it must happen, essentially is absolving him, saying, the person who sent you over to me, who handed you over to me, he has the greater sin.
00:15:35
Speaker
You only have the authority that God has given you. So it's like when Jesus would pray soon, when he would be on the cross, when he says, forgive them, Father, for they don't know what they are doing.
00:15:49
Speaker
Pilate didn't want to have to do that. He tried to appease the people by having Jesus whipped and hoping that that would be enough, but it simply wasn't enough. So he could have not whipped him, but he did so out of an attempt to appease But it ended up just and mounting more pain and more more punishment onto Jesus.
00:16:12
Speaker
But it also fulfilled because by his stripes we are healed. So even then, God knew that he would be whipped. And God gave that authority to herod or to Pilate. rather
00:16:25
Speaker
So Pilate tried to let him go after this, but the Judean leaders cried out.
00:16:31
Speaker
So let's see, we are done with that reading. So let's look also at the fulfillment of prophecy. We are going to look at Matthew,
00:16:46
Speaker
ah Luke rather. We're going to look in Luke.
00:16:55
Speaker
So when Herod was interviewing Jesus, he was questioning Jesus on many issues, it says in verse 9. But Jesus did not answer at all. And this fulfills Isaiah 53, verse 7, where it is ah where Isaiah says he was oppressed and he was afflicted.
00:17:15
Speaker
Yet he did not open his mouth. like a lamb led to the slaughter, like a sheep before its shearers is silent. So he did not open his mouth.
00:17:27
Speaker
So once again, we see that through this very short period of time, Jesus is fulfilling many old covenant scriptures, which is what Jesus said would need to happen in the Psalms, by the prophets, and in the law, in the three sections of the of the Jewish Bible.
00:17:46
Speaker
Let's see. He also, oh, that's good. That's it there. thought there was another one here. Oh, Isaiah.
00:17:57
Speaker
I think there was another one here. I just didn't write it down.
00:18:03
Speaker
What it is actually is that in verse 11, where after Jesus did not answer, where Herod together with his soldiers were treating him with contempt and mocking him, and they put splendid clothing on him and sent him back to Pilate.
00:18:16
Speaker
That is also what fulfilled the 53 verse 7. I was thinking that there was a secondary verse there, but it was actually two things that were fulfilled in 53 verse 7.
00:18:29
Speaker
Oh boy, so we've seen prophecy fulfillment. We have seen envy.
00:18:36
Speaker
We're going to see truth. Jesus says that he was born because he came into the world to show the truth.

Jesus' Declaration of Truth

00:18:46
Speaker
And anybody who wants the truth will listen to me.
00:18:51
Speaker
So he is telling this to Pilate. So we need to remember that the reason Jesus came was to show the truth. So anybody who wants truth will listen to him.
00:19:03
Speaker
Jesus is the way, he is the truth, and he is the light. We need to believe that Jesus is the way. The way to what?
00:19:15
Speaker
The way to the Father. He is the truth. He does not point people to himself to glorify himself. But he did come to save the world so that we could be reconciled to God.
00:19:30
Speaker
So for those that are seeking truth, he is the truth. Pilate says very um philosophically, what is truth?
00:19:42
Speaker
And we ask that a lot in our today's society too, don't we? Oh, truth is subjective. Truth is in the eyes of the beholder. And that is not true.
00:19:53
Speaker
Jesus tells us that he is the way, he is the truth, and he is the light. He is the light of what? The light of the world.
00:20:03
Speaker
And because the light of the world is in us, we too have become the light of the world and the salt of the earth. We are meant to shine Jesus' light.
00:20:15
Speaker
We are meant to show people the way. the way through Jesus, not to be glorifying ourselves as the ah religious leaders were doing.
00:20:26
Speaker
It's not for our own glory, but it's to point people to Jesus. We should make sure that we are not looking for people to follow us, but that we are pointing people to follow Jesus.
00:20:38
Speaker
And therefore to follow God. Because Jesus tells us that if we love Jesus, then we also love God. Because they are one and because God sent him.
00:20:51
Speaker
Jesus also tells us in truth today that his kingdom is not of this world. If it were of this world, then his servants would be fighting for him and he would not have been taken captive.
00:21:02
Speaker
But the fact is, is he was doing what he was called to do. The reason that he was born, the reason that he came and his kingdom is of heaven.
00:21:14
Speaker
And our life is not in spiritual, is not in physical life rather, but is in spiritual life. That though we shall die, we will live and have eternal life in him.
00:21:27
Speaker
Because he is the way and the truth and the light. In today's society of truth is in the eyes of the beholder, meaning that truth is however people choose to see it.
00:21:40
Speaker
We need to be firm in our belief that there is one truth. There is one God. There is one Jesus. And this is a very important daily application for us today.
00:21:51
Speaker
As people will say that there are many paths to righteousness and Jesus says, nope. He says he is the narrow gate. He is the way in.
00:22:03
Speaker
So it is not in the eyes of the beholder. It is not subjective. There is truth that is absolute. When people say, what is truth? We can tell them the truth is Jesus.
00:22:18
Speaker
And that's our big daily application today.

Invitation to Spiritual Family and Deepening Faith

00:22:23
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today and shown you his light and and knowing the truth and the way. and if you have found this event and you've not been listening before and you just popped up and God put this on your feed, then I encourage you to know that Jesus is the way.
00:22:41
Speaker
He is the truth and he is the light. He told us what would happen ahead of time so that when these things occurred, we would be able to see and know and believe.
00:22:52
Speaker
And for anybody who believes, they too can have eternal life with Jesus. And we want you in our family. want you as part of our spiritual family. So join us. So if you'd like more information on this, feel free to head me up on my site.
00:23:07
Speaker
Leave a comment on the audio version on YouTube. You cannot leave comment on the video version because it is set for Made for Kids since this is a family event. And I wanted to make it as expensive ability to be exposed to families as possible since it is ah written at a level for families to understand for children and adults.
00:23:28
Speaker
And you know, I've had a lot of people actually tell me too that they like the idea of hearing this type of version of the Bible because it does make God's Word so much easier to understand.
00:23:39
Speaker
And then when you do head up your big Bible when you're hungry for more of God's Word, and if you need more of the details of what is going on, then it really helps to open up your eyes so that you have understanding and your ears so that you can hear what it is that God is teaching.
00:23:54
Speaker
I love that about this version of the Bible. So I will always put the in the description the Bible verses the where our chapters take place so that you can head up your big Bible if you are interested in more of the fine details that we have not maybe potentially covered for you.
00:24:12
Speaker
So thank you for being here. Click that light button. It looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart. It looks like a share to your social media. It looks like where you can email it to somebody and go ahead and spread the word about reading God's word.
00:24:28
Speaker
And because together we are the light of the world because Jesus has overcome death. I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day today, whatever day you get around to watching or listening today's October 3rd reading.
00:24:42
Speaker
And guess what? I'll be here again tomorrow for tomorrow's reading. Until then, have a great day.
