Introduction to Daily Bible Reading

00:00:02
Speaker
Hey, everybody. Today is September 24th, and we are here for our daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley. Thank you for being here with me.
00:00:15
Speaker
If you are just finding this event, stick around because we're going to be reading the Bible today. This is an excellent version of the Bible. It is in chronological order.
00:00:25
Speaker
It's in storybook form, and it's written at a level that we can really understand God's Word. It doesn't do us much good if we don't understand what we're reading.
00:00:37
Speaker
And then we will also talk about what our daily application is, because every day God's word is applicable in our lives. And we will be talking about that today.

Using a Commitment Calendar for Bible Reading

00:00:50
Speaker
If you are following along because you've been here for a little while on that commitment calendar, i know at least some of you are. Go ahead and get that calendar out and your sticker or maybe your crayon.
00:01:02
Speaker
Maybe your crayon you can use to mark off those days if you don't have your sticker or a pen. Because we are about to hear the Bible today.

Transformation of Marriage and the Bible's Most Important Rule

00:01:16
Speaker
Today, we are going to be looking at the relationship between what we have now as a husband and a wife and how that relationship changes in heaven. And then we will also be reading about what is the most important rule that we have in the Bible.
00:01:36
Speaker
We've talked about it a couple of times, so i bet you can guess what it is.

Parable of the Vineyard Owner and Tenants

00:01:43
Speaker
Our first story today that Jesus is going to be telling us is called The Farmers and the Grape Garden. And let's see if you can figure out who this story is about before we get to explaining it.
00:02:00
Speaker
Once a man planted a garden of grape bushes, said Jesus, and he built a wall around his field. He built a tall tower for watching over the field, and then he let some farmers rent the field, and he went away on a long trip.
00:02:19
Speaker
And in time, the grapes were ready to be picked. So the man sent a servant to go get some. But the farmers caught the servant, and they beat him up, and then they sent him away without any fruit.
00:02:35
Speaker
Now the man who owned the field, he sent another servant to the farmers. But the farmers hit him on the head. They were very mean to him. So the man sent another servant.
00:02:49
Speaker
But the farmers killed him. The man sent lots of other servants. The farmers beat some of them up and they killed others. And at last, there was only one person left to send.
00:03:06
Speaker
It was the man's son. And he loved his son very much. They will listen to my son, said the man. So he sent his son to go see them.
00:03:20
Speaker
But the farmer said, aha, this is his son. Come on, let's kill him. And then the field will be ours. So they killed the son and they threw him out of the field.
00:03:36
Speaker
Now, what will the owner of that field do? Asked Jesus. He will come and he will kill those farmers and he will give his field to somebody else.
00:03:49
Speaker
ah We hope this never happens, said the people. And Jesus said, have you read this psalm? There was a stone that the builders didn't want.
00:04:03
Speaker
Now that stone holds up the whole building. God made this happen, and we think it's wonderful.
00:04:17
Speaker
God is going to take his kingdom away from you, and he will give it to people who will follow him, and they will obey him.

Jewish Leaders' Attempt to Trick Jesus

00:04:28
Speaker
Now the leaders at the worship house heard this story, and they knew Jesus was talking about them. So they looked for a way to catch him. But they couldn't, because the people said that Jesus was a prophet, and the leaders were afraid of the crowd.
00:04:47
Speaker
Now some Jewish leaders tried to think of ways to trick Jesus. They wanted to make him say the wrong things. And then they could blame him. and they could have the Roman leaders take him to jail.
00:05:01
Speaker
So the Jewish leaders sent some people to trick Jesus. They said, We know you tell the truth. You teach about God. You don't follow people's ideas.
00:05:14
Speaker
So tell us something. Should we pay taxes to the king?
00:05:20
Speaker
Now Jesus knew what they were trying to do. So he asked them, Why are you trying to trick me?

Jesus' Teachings on Taxes and Eternal Life

00:05:27
Speaker
Show me the money you pay your taxes with. So they showed him the money.
00:05:35
Speaker
Whose picture is on it? asked Jesus. The king's. Whose name is on it? The king's, they said.
00:05:46
Speaker
Then give the king what belongs to him and give God what belongs to him.
00:05:55
Speaker
Now the people couldn't trick Jesus. And in fact, they were surprised by what Jesus said. And they couldn't think of anything else to say. That same day, some other leaders of God's people came to see Jesus.
00:06:11
Speaker
And these leaders did not believe that people who die go to heaven.
00:06:17
Speaker
So they tried to trick Jesus. They asked him, Here's a problem. Moses told what should happen if a man dies. The man's brother has to marry the wife of the man who died, and his brother has to have children for him.
00:06:34
Speaker
Now, there were seven brothers, and the first brother got married, and then he died, but he didn't have any children. So the second brother married the wife of the man who had died.
00:06:48
Speaker
But the second brother died too, and he didn't have any children. So the third brother married the woman. And then this brother died and he didn't have any children.
00:07:03
Speaker
So the fourth brother also married the woman. And then he died. And the fifth brother married the woman, but the same thing kept happening.
00:07:17
Speaker
Now all seven brothers married the woman and all of them died and there were no children and at last the woman died. Now, ask the leaders, what if people live again? What if they go to heaven?
00:07:34
Speaker
Whose wife will that woman be? She married all seven brothers.
00:07:41
Speaker
You are thinking the wrong way, said Jesus, and you do not understand what God says. You don't know God's power. People will come back to life, said Jesus.
00:07:57
Speaker
Then they won't marry and they won't die. They will be like the angels in heaven.
00:08:07
Speaker
Now one teacher of God's law saw that Jesus had given a good answer. So he said, there are many rules. Which of them is the most important?
00:08:21
Speaker
The most important rule is this one, said Jesus. The Lord is the only God. Love the Lord with all your heart.
00:08:34
Speaker
Love him with all your soul. Love him with all your mind. Love him with all your strength. The next important rule is to love your neighbor like yourself.
00:08:50
Speaker
No other rule is greater than these.
00:08:55
Speaker
You answered that very well, said the teacher, and you are right to say that there is only one God. It's important to love him with all of our heart We must love him with all of our soul, our mind, and our strength.
00:09:12
Speaker
It's important to love our neighbor, too. And all of this is more important than any gift we could give to God.
00:09:24
Speaker
Now Jesus could tell that this man was wise. You are not very far from God's kingdom, said Jesus. The Jewish leaders were standing there together.
00:09:36
Speaker
So Jesus asked, what do you think about the promised one? Whose son is he? he is King David's son, they said. Then how could David call him his Lord?
00:09:50
Speaker
Asked Jesus. Do you remember what David wrote in the Psalms? David called the promised one Lord. So how could he be David's son?
00:10:02
Speaker
Nobody could answer Jesus. And after that, nobody dared to ask him any more questions.

Explaining the Parable's Symbolism and Jesus' Teachings

00:10:12
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:10:20
Speaker
So let's go back to the beginning and we are going to talk about that farmer in the grape garden story that we read first. So in that story, we have the man who planted a garden of grape bushes.
00:10:33
Speaker
Who was that man? In the story, that man represents God. And he built a wall around his field. He built a tall tower for watching over the field.
00:10:45
Speaker
And he went away on a long trip. And in time, the grapes were ready to be picked. So the man sent a servant to get some. Now, who are the servants that are being referenced in this story?
00:11:00
Speaker
you have an idea?
00:11:03
Speaker
They are the prophets.
00:11:06
Speaker
God sent prophets to the people. And the people didn't listen to the prophets. So the people in this story who are represented by the farmers, the farmers are not listening to the servants who are telling them that they need to collect their share of the grapes for the one who owns the field.
00:11:33
Speaker
Now, who, of course, is the son of the farmer or of of the landowner there? That's right. That is Jesus. Jesus was the son.
00:11:45
Speaker
And what does Jesus say that will happen? He says, it was the man's son. He loved his son very much. They will listen to my son, he said.
00:11:58
Speaker
So he sent his son to them. But the farmer said, Aha! This is his son. Come on, let's kill him. And then the field will be ours.
00:12:10
Speaker
So they killed the son and they threw him out into the field.
00:12:15
Speaker
Out of the field, rather. Now what will the owner of that field do? Asked Jesus. He will come and kill those farmers and he will give his field to somebody else.
00:12:29
Speaker
Jesus then said,
00:12:32
Speaker
God is going to take his kingdom away from you, and he will give it to people who will follow him, and they will obey him.
00:12:42
Speaker
Now the leaders at the worship house heard this story, and they knew Jesus was talking about them. Now, Jesus was also talking about the Gentiles. That is who he was going to be giving the field to, to work the field, because the people that he was sent to would reject him.
00:13:02
Speaker
And he also told us, he said, did you hear Have you ever heard of that Psalm that says there was a stone that the builders didn't want? And now that stone holds up the whole building.
00:13:17
Speaker
and God made this happen. And we think it's wonderful. Who is that stone that was rejected by the builders? That's right. That was Jesus.
00:13:30
Speaker
He was rejected. But now he is the cornerstone that holds everything up. Isn't that a wonderful way of telling it? These stories are easier to understand when we already have an understanding of what he's talking about with ah the analogy, the comparison.
00:13:53
Speaker
And that's why Jesus tells these parables. They are comparisons to show similarities so that people can see how one thing is like another thing. And that way we are transferring knowledge and that way by learning to understand and associate with something else.
00:14:13
Speaker
So then we have the tricks, the questions that the Sadducee was asking about whose man, whose wife would that woman be?

Sadducees' Questions on Marriage and Jesus' Responses

00:14:22
Speaker
but After she had married all seven of these brothers.
00:14:26
Speaker
This Sadducee was just being difficult. He was trying to trap Jesus. And we all know people who can ask ridiculous questions hoping to try to trip people up.
00:14:37
Speaker
And that's exactly what the Sadducees were doing. But I'm going to open up our big Bible today because I love the way it is told in Luke. And they're all very similar, the accounts.
00:14:50
Speaker
But I love the way Luke words it. He says, jesus said to them the sons of this age mary and are given in marriage but though considered worthy to reach the afterlife and the resurrection of the dead neither mary nor are they and marriage For they can no longer die because they are like angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
00:15:20
Speaker
But at the burning bush, even Moses revealed that the dead are raised. And he did this when he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
00:15:36
Speaker
Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living and to him, they are all living.
00:15:48
Speaker
So what he's explaining is that although it seems like we die, our physical death is not true death. It is just the shell and that we still have our eternal life that we are welcome.
00:16:01
Speaker
We are welcoming.
00:16:05
Speaker
So some of the Torah scholars replied, Teacher, you have said it well, for they no longer dared to question him about anything. And then Jesus said to them, How can they say that the Messiah is the son of David? Oh, that part's not really as important. Let's see. We're going to skip down.
00:16:27
Speaker
Then with all the people listening, Jesus said to the disciples, Beware of the Torah scholars. who like to walk around in long robes.
00:16:39
Speaker
They love greetings in the marketplaces. They love the best seats in the synagogues. They devour widows' houses, and they make places, and they make long prayers as a show.
00:16:55
Speaker
These men will receive greater condemnation. So it means that they are going to be judged more harshly than the people because they should already know God's word and they should be learning to interpret it.
00:17:11
Speaker
But instead, they are more interested in their own fleshly desires. Like what we read about previously, where the Pharisee, was they were concerned about money.
00:17:25
Speaker
So I just wanted to give us a little bit of explanation on that. So I hope that you found that that was enlightening, that we can understand that.

The Greatest Commandments: Love God and Neighbor

00:17:32
Speaker
And now let's go to our daily application.
00:17:36
Speaker
We have our daily application today regarding the most important rules of all. We need to remember that God is the only one God.
00:17:49
Speaker
There are no other gods. He is the only one. And that then we need to love him with every part of us. We need to love him so much.
00:18:01
Speaker
And why do we love God? Because he first loved us. That's right. And it tells us here that...
00:18:13
Speaker
All of this love, love for God, and even loving our neighbor as ourselves, all of this is more important than any gift we could give to God.
00:18:29
Speaker
So let's remember that loving God and remembering that He is the only God that there is, there is no other God, and we need to love Him all we can with all of our heart, all of our soul, all of our mind, and all of our strength.
00:18:46
Speaker
And if we do that, and we love one another, these are the greatest gifts we could ever give God. They are better than any other gift we could give Him, as if we follow Him and love Him with all of our hearts in every way, as much as possible that we could.
00:19:07
Speaker
Isn't that wonderful? So we want to take time each day to make sure that that is what we are doing, that we are making Jesus and God the most important ones in our lives because they are the most important rules in the Bible.
00:19:25
Speaker
There is nothing else greater than those rules. We are to love God and love others.
00:19:35
Speaker
So I hope that you love our daily application today. i know I do.

Encouragement to Share Daily Bible Reading Sessions

00:19:39
Speaker
And I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today. i know God has lit in my light today. it is never too much to remember to love God with all of our hearts, all of our minds, all of our soul, all of our strength, because we get so distracted with so many things.
00:19:59
Speaker
So we need these reminders. And I love how God repeats these reminders in our word. It's not just once that we hear things. It's more than once. And these things are very important.
00:20:12
Speaker
And that is why we see those lessons over and over again. Well, thank you for joining me today. I hope that you enjoyed today's daily reading and that you are encouraged to make a specific effort to intentionally love God and everything about him because he is so, so magnificent.
00:20:34
Speaker
Let's love every part of God with every part of us, all of our heart, all of our mind, all of our strength, and all of our soul. Well, thank you for being here. If you feel that God has lit your light today, i would like to ask that you remember to click that light button.
00:20:53
Speaker
Let's show other people this event. We can do that by clicking the light button. And that way we can help spread the word about reading God's word. Well, I hope that you have a fantastic rest of your day today.
00:21:07
Speaker
And I will be here for tomorrow's daily reading. Until then, I hope you have a blessed day. See you then.
