The Great Commission Explained

00:01:52
Speaker
Well, today we are going to be discussing what is and what is not Jesus's command for us to do. as far as what There was a person who labeled this the Great Commission, but Jesus does not use those words.
00:02:08
Speaker
We may know what we are referring to when we say the Great Commission, but it's actually... That was done in order to um encourage people to be missionaries, to go out into the world.
00:02:21
Speaker
it was It was done as like an advertising slogan. ah Oh, it's Jesus's great commission, as though it were ah something different.
00:02:32
Speaker
But this is what we are supposed to go out and do now that we know about Jesus and what he has done for us and what it is not.

Peter's Encounter with Jesus

00:02:43
Speaker
So let's head into our reading.
00:02:45
Speaker
Our first section is entitled, Going Fishing. Now Peter, Thomas, Nathaniel, James, John, and two other disciples were together.
00:02:57
Speaker
I think I'll go fishing, said Peter. We'll go with you, said the others. So off they went, and they got into their boat and went fishing. But that night, they didn't catch anything.
00:03:11
Speaker
And at last the sun became began to come up. And suddenly there was Jesus standing on the shore, but his friends couldn't tell that it was him.
00:03:23
Speaker
Don't you have any fish, my friends? Jesus called out to them. No, they called back. Throw your net into the water on the right side of the boat and you will find some fish there, said Jesus.
00:03:39
Speaker
So they threw their net over onto the boat's right side and lots of fish got caught in the net. The net got very heavy and Jesus's friends couldn't even pull it in.
00:03:51
Speaker
It was so loaded with fish. It's the Lord, said John. ah Peter heard John, so right away he pulled his clothes on around him because he had taken them most of them off while he was working with the fishing.
00:04:07
Speaker
And then he jumped into the water. The other friends followed in the boat. They were about 100 yards away from the shore, and they had the net full of fish with them.
00:04:22
Speaker
A campfire was going when they got near the shore and fish were cooking on it and there was bread too. Bring some of the fish you caught, said Jesus. Peter climbed back into the boat and he pulled the net to shore.
00:04:38
Speaker
The net was so full. There were about 153 big fish, but the net did not break. Wow, that's a lot of fish.
00:04:50
Speaker
Come have some breakfast, said Jesus. Jesus' friends did not dare to ask, who are you? Because they knew that it was Jesus.

Love and Responsibility: Jesus and Peter

00:05:03
Speaker
Our next section is entitled, Do You Love Me? Jesus gave his friends bread and fish for breakfast, and they ate it. I think if Jesus gave me bread and fish for breakfast, I would eat it too.
00:05:17
Speaker
Even if it's not what I wanted for breakfast.
00:05:21
Speaker
Then Jesus turned to Peter. Peter, do you love me more than anyone else? Yes, said Peter. You know I love you. Then feed my lambs, said Jesus.
00:05:36
Speaker
Peter, do you really love me? Jesus asked. Yes, said Peter. You know I love you. Then take care of my sheep, said Jesus.
00:05:51
Speaker
Jesus asked Peter again. Peter, do you love me? Now Peter was upset because Jesus had asked him three times, do you love me?
00:06:05
Speaker
You know everything, Lord, said Peter. You know I love you. Then feed my sheep, said Jesus.
00:06:16
Speaker
You were younger once. You dressed yourself. You chose where to go and you went. But someday you will be old and then you will reach out your hands and somebody else will dress you and they will take you where you do not want to go.
00:06:36
Speaker
And Jesus was talking about the way that Peter was going to die. Then Jesus said to Peter, follow me. Peter looked around and he saw that John was following them.
00:06:50
Speaker
Peter asked Jesus, What about John?
00:06:55
Speaker
Jesus answered Peter, What if I want him to stay alive? said Jesus. What does that have to do with you? You just follow me. Now some of Jesus' followers began saying that John wouldn't die, but Jesus did not say that John wouldn't die. He only said, What if I want him to stay alive?
00:07:16
Speaker
Now John is the one who wrote this. He saw and he heard these things. So we know that what he wrote is true.

Jesus's Last Instructions and Ascension

00:07:27
Speaker
Going into the clouds, our final section today.
00:07:32
Speaker
Jesus spoke to the friends. I have been given the right to be in charge. I am in charge of heaven and earth. Jesus told his 11 special friends, the disciples, So I am telling you to go.
00:07:49
Speaker
Make followers for me in all nations. Baptize them in the Father's name, the Son's name, and the Holy Spirit's name.
00:08:01
Speaker
Teach people to obey everything I have told you. And I will always be with you, said Jesus, even to the very end of time.
00:08:13
Speaker
I'm going to insert Mark chapter 16, verses 16 through 18 here. It's not included in our version of the Bible, but I think it is very important to include it.
00:08:37
Speaker
Starting in 16. He who believes and is immersed, meaning baptized, shall be saved. But he who does not believe shall be condemned.
00:08:49
Speaker
These signs will accompany those who believe. In my name, they will drive out demons. They will speak new languages. They will handle snakes.
00:09:01
Speaker
And if they drink anything deadly, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick and they will get well.
00:09:15
Speaker
Jesus helped his friends to understand what God's word meant. It was all written down, said Jesus. God's word says that the promised one would die.
00:09:26
Speaker
It says he would come back to life. God's word says that people will teach about him in all nations. Then people will be sorry about their sins and they will change their ways.
00:09:42
Speaker
They will be forgiven. This will all start in Jerusalem. You've seen it all and you can tell about it. I will send you the gift that my father has promised, said Jesus.
00:09:55
Speaker
But stay in Jerusalem for a while. Stay there until the father has given you power. So Jesus led his special friends to a place close to Bethany.
00:10:06
Speaker
And then he lifted his hands up and he prayed for God to bring good to them. And here we are going to read. This is actually what is known as the Aaronic

The Aaronic Blessing

00:10:20
Speaker
blessing.
00:10:20
Speaker
This is the blessing that we end with every service on Shabbat ah with the blessing that God commanded Aaron to give to the people. God said to bless them with this and I will bless the people.
00:10:35
Speaker
We're going to read that blessing.
00:10:40
Speaker
This blessing is found in the book of Numbers chapter 6 and starting in verse 22. It says, Again, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, Thus you are to bless the children of Israel by saying to them,
00:10:57
Speaker
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord turn his face toward you and grant you shalom.
00:11:11
Speaker
And in this way, they are to place my name over the children of Israel. And so I will bless them. So Jesus, being our high priest, blessed them with this.
00:11:24
Speaker
it's It's not included like that in most of our ah Bibles, but that is the blessing when it says that he blessed them. That is what he said to them.
00:11:41
Speaker
Let's see, i lost my place here now.
00:11:45
Speaker
Is it time now?

Following Jesus and Repentance

00:11:47
Speaker
asked Jesus' friends. Will God's people be a kingdom again? You cannot know the times, said Jesus. You cannot know when things are going to happen.
00:11:58
Speaker
The Father has planned them and he is in charge. But you will get power when the Holy Spirit comes to you. And you will tell people about me. You will teach about me in Jerusalem, said Jesus.
00:12:12
Speaker
And you will teach about me in Judea. You will teach about me in Samaria. And in fact, you will teach about me all over the world.
00:12:28
Speaker
As Jesus finished blessing them, Jesus went up off the ground. His friends watched until there was a cloud that hid him, and they peered up into the sky.
00:12:41
Speaker
And suddenly they saw two men standing by them, and the men were dressed all in white. Men from Galilee, said the two men. Why are you just standing here?
00:12:52
Speaker
Why are you peering into the sky? Jesus has gone up into heaven. And he will come back the same way that you saw him go.
00:13:05
Speaker
Jesus' special friends worshipped him. And then they went back to Jerusalem. Their hearts were full of joy. They stayed at the worship house. And they worshipped God there continually.
00:13:19
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today. As well as the end of the five gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke, deant and matthew mark four Gospels. Sorry about that.
00:13:30
Speaker
kind of get my numbers straight there. That is the end of the Gospels. We have now finished with Jesus's teaching and his ascension after his resurrection.
00:13:42
Speaker
Yay. my gosh, there's so much. Well, let's head into what we said we would talk about today. But first, we're going to just mention Peter was very concerned about when Jesus had asked him if you love me three times and Jesus gave him important work to do. He was to take care of and feed Jesus's sheep and his lambs.
00:14:11
Speaker
And then he became concerned with what John was supposed to be doing when he saw that John was following along to listen to what he was telling Peter. Peter said, well, what about John?
00:14:24
Speaker
And Jesus told him, don't you worry about John, you just follow me. So there's an important lesson in that too. We don't need to worry about the plans that God has for other people.
00:14:36
Speaker
We need to follow Jesus. We are meant to follow Jesus. And that leads into the work that Jesus gave us to do.
00:14:49
Speaker
Jesus has been given the right to be in charge. He is in charge of heaven and on earth. So he is telling us to go and make followers for him. And then we are to baptize them in the name of the Father, in Jesus's name, and in the Holy Spirit's name.
00:15:07
Speaker
We are to teach people to obey everything he has told us. So I hope you feel that this event that you are learning how to obey Jesus.
00:15:20
Speaker
This is me obeying Jesus's command to go and make followers of Jesus, teaching you to obey him in everything he taught us. Jesus did not come to abolish the law, but to fu fulfill it.
00:15:34
Speaker
So I hope that you have felt this year that you are learning about God's word, and that you are learning how to make God and Jesus the most important ones in your lives so that you are...
00:15:47
Speaker
motivated to follow him and to be witnesses to what Jesus and God do in your own lives, because that is what we are meant to do, to witness to people, to tell people about the experiences that God gives us.
00:16:02
Speaker
When we have those difficult times and God brings us through them, those are amazing. We are meant to tell people about that, to encourage others to have faith in God so that they will also want to obey him.
00:16:18
Speaker
When they choose to obey, we learn we read today that God's word says that people will teach about him in all nations and people will be sorry about their sins and they will change their ways.
00:16:32
Speaker
That is what repentance means. Repentance means to regret how you have been behaving and want to change your ways.

Witnessing and Sharing Experiences

00:16:40
Speaker
We saw when Jesus spoke to a Mary, and think it was a Mary, when a woman was brought in who was found having relations with a man who was not her husband.
00:16:52
Speaker
And we've spoken about this before, but if you haven't, if you maybe missed that day or you didn't hear that one, The ah people brought this woman to Jesus saying this woman was caught in sin.
00:17:04
Speaker
And Jesus said to let the first person who was without sin begin stoning her, condemning her. And one by one, the people walked away because nobody was without sin except for Jesus.
00:17:19
Speaker
And he said, woman, is there no one left here to condemn you? And she said, no one, sir. And he said, neither do I condemn you. For those of us who believe and ri and confess our sins and are sorry for them, we are not we are no longer condemned. He says there is no condemnation for us.
00:17:39
Speaker
He does not condemn us. He forgives us. And this is what we need to teach people about. Jesus is not here to shame us.
00:17:50
Speaker
He is here to save us. They're both S words, but they're not the same. And it says they will be forgiven. So teaching people that they can be forgiven is what we are to talk about.
00:18:05
Speaker
And and it we will talk about in the letters when we get to those, how God starts this transformation in our mind. We are no longer slaves to sin. These are wonderful things that we have talked about to share with other people.
00:18:20
Speaker
And so this is our job. We are supposed to go out and help people to be followers of God, followers of Jesus, to teach people how to obey him. And I hope that you are motivated and encouraged to do that in your daily life.
00:18:37
Speaker
God will bring people into your life. I know it's interesting. I did not ever feel um like a witness prior to God giving me my name, which when then he told me I was his obedient witness.
00:18:50
Speaker
And that was when I realized I actually have been a witness. i I tell people about the things that I experienced with God. And that's where I joke and say, if God didn't want anybody to know these things, he surely wouldn't tell me. Yeah.
00:19:03
Speaker
Because I love to talk about these and and to share things with people. So there's a secret, God won't tell me about it. good Because i I would not be able to keep that in.
00:19:13
Speaker
And I hope you don't keep it in either. When God does amazing things with you, share about them. Tell people about them. So during this time, the people, the the disciples were meant to wait. This is during the time of Shavuot.
00:19:28
Speaker
They are counting up their 50 days, not counting down from 50 to one, but counting up from one to 50.

Shavuot and the Holy Spirit

00:19:36
Speaker
So this is after Passover. This is after the Feast of First Fruits.
00:19:40
Speaker
And now we have left the time of the seven days of matzah, bread as well, which is the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And now the disciples are waiting. They are counting their 50 days.
00:19:51
Speaker
for the Shavuot. And Shavuot is the day that God fulfilled by giving them the Holy Spirit. And we will read about that soon. Might be tomorrow, might be the next day. I'm not entirely sure. I haven't peeked ahead yet.
00:20:06
Speaker
Well, I hope that you feel that God has lit your light, that you are so motivated and excited. Oh, and we can't forget, the angel told us that in the same way that he left, he will return again.
00:20:17
Speaker
So it's very important to remember that Jesus is going to return. The angels have confirmed that for us with the disciples, and now it's been written as their testimony.
00:20:30
Speaker
that the angel said that he would return in the same way. And also Jesus told us that he would return. And when he does so, it will be like lightning across the sky where it's visible from one side of the sky to the other.
00:20:43
Speaker
That's not something that will happen quietly or secretly or that he will be somewhere and you will have missed that. We also know that his arrival is heralded by the blasting of the great shofar from heaven, where Jesus will have his angels blast the shofar.
00:21:00
Speaker
And then those who are called into the rapture will be gathered with him into the sky. We learned about that too. So it all works together into one great big picture.
00:21:12
Speaker
i hope that you are understanding God's great big picture for us in the Bible this year as we read through this day by day kids Bible written by Karen Henley. I hope that you are finding this Bible easy to understand and that it makes you hungry for more of God's word so that you are motivated to head up into your big Bible and to want to spend time with God.
00:21:34
Speaker
Well, I am going to finish this up. I hope you have a fantastic blessed day.

Conclusion with Aaronic Blessing

00:21:39
Speaker
Let's go ahead and bless you with the Aaron Aaronic blessing today.
00:21:47
Speaker
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn his face toward you and grant you shalom.
00:22:03
Speaker
And we know that Jesus brings us shalom, not like the world gives, but he gives us true shalom, which is not just peace, but wholeness. And in him we are whole and complete.
00:22:17
Speaker
Have a blessed rest of your day, and I will be here for tomorrow's daily reading, wherever you are watching or listening. Until then.
