Significance and Prophecy of the Feast of Booths

00:01:37
Speaker
Because we are about to hear the Bible today.
00:01:41
Speaker
Since this is the Feast of Tabernacles, I do have some supplemental stuff for us today. i know that I've been giving you a great deal of information on this Feast of Booths, and we have some additional reading to give on that today.
00:01:57
Speaker
how important is it to celebrate the feast of booths is it something we are still supposed to do today and why well we've talked about the fact that it is a foreshadowing not only to remind us of the fact that god dwelled with the people in the cloud when he traveled with them from Egypt as they wandered in the desert for 40 years before they were permitted to enter the promised land, but also as a foreshadowing that Jesus will be coming again.
00:02:26
Speaker
Now, in Zechariah chapter 14, God talks about this, and he says that everybody will be required to celebrate the Feast of Booths at that time when he returns.
00:02:42
Speaker
So if God decided long ago that it was going to be a mandatory observation in the future when he returns again, why would it not be important for us to be observing it now?
00:02:57
Speaker
So we are going to be looking at Zechariah chapter 14. And in this chapter, he is talking about the return. It's talking about that there is, to behold, a day of the Lord is coming.
00:03:11
Speaker
And I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to wage war. And the city shall be captured. The house is ransacked. And he goes on about that. And he says in verse 3,
00:03:28
Speaker
in that day his feet will stand on the mount of olives which lies to the east of jerusalem and the mount of olives will be split in two from east to west forming a huge valley half of the mountain will move toward the north and half of it will move toward the south Then you will flee through my mountain valley because the mountain valley will reach to Azel.
00:03:53
Speaker
Yes, you will flee like you fled from the earthquake in the days of King Uzziah of judea a Judah. Then Adonai, my God, will come and all the priests with him.
00:04:06
Speaker
All the saints, rather, all the saints with him. And in that day there will be no light, cold, or frost. It will be a day known only to the Lord, neither day nor night.
00:04:18
Speaker
Even in the evening time there will be light. Moreover, in that day living waters will flow from Jerusalem, half toward the eastern sea and half toward the western sea, both in the summer and in the winter.
00:04:36
Speaker
The Lord will then be king over all the earth. In that day, the Lord will be Ehad and his name Ehad, which means oneness.
00:04:47
Speaker
The Lord's name will be oneness. The whole land from Geba to Ramon south of Jerusalem will become like the Arabah. Jerusalem will be raised up and occupy her place from the Benjamin Gate to the place of the first gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king's winepresses.
00:05:09
Speaker
People will dwell in her and no longer will there be a ban of destruction. Jerusalem will live in security. Now here's where it gets to the part where he's talking about the Feast of Booths.
00:05:22
Speaker
Now this is the plague with which Adonai will strike all the people that wage war against Jerusalem. oop We're going to skip that part. That's actually not the part yet.
00:05:33
Speaker
ah After the plague that he strikes, it's pretty devastating. ah In verse 16, he says, then all the survivors from the nations that attacked jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the king lord god of hosts and to celebrate sucotte furthermore if any of the nations on earth do not go up to jerusalem to worship the king lord god of host they will have no rain If the Egyptians do not go up and celebrate, they will have no rain.
00:06:07
Speaker
Instead, there will be the plague that the Lord will inflict on the nations that do not go up to celebrate Sukkot.

Personal Testimonies of Celebrating Sukkot

00:06:16
Speaker
This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate Sukkot.
00:06:24
Speaker
And in that day, holy to the Lord will be inscribed on the bells of horses, and the pots in the house of the Lord will be like the sacred bowls in front of the altar. In fact, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah will be holy to the Lord God of hosts, so that everyone who comes to sacrifice will take them and cook in them.
00:06:46
Speaker
And in that day, there will no longer be a merchant in the house of the Lord God of hosts.
00:06:53
Speaker
So this is referring to the time but after Jesus returns. And he's going to be celebrating the Feast of Booths with us.
00:07:04
Speaker
He's going to be dwelling with us. And Jesus himself will celebrate this feast with us. So if we are meant to celebrate it after he returns, we are also meant to celebrate it to- today.
00:07:18
Speaker
And celebrating it we are. I will tell you, I had a magnificent first night. it was I was really nervous because our nights here in San Diego have been dipping to about 49. And it's been very foggy. So I was just concerned ah that it might be too cold and whatnot. But let me tell you, the Lord just really had his hand on on my husband and me.
00:07:40
Speaker
um My husband decided to celebrate with me and he spent the night in the tent with me. We even had our dinner out there and it was just awesome.
00:07:51
Speaker
ah He was just, we were just so joyful. and And the Lord woke me up at about three in the morning because we left the ah the the cover off of the tent.
00:08:02
Speaker
So it just had the mosquito net because we are supposed to have an open top in order to allow us to see the sky. And i don't know how it's possible, but through the fog, we could see, i could see the stars.
00:08:17
Speaker
So the Lord woke me up at about three in the morning and I kept wondering, we don't have any streetlights near us. So why is it so bright outside? And I had forgotten that last night was going to be a full moon.
00:08:29
Speaker
So the Lord's timing, as we've talked about, was just, it just aligned perfectly. he aligned his first day of Sukkot with a full moon. And I was able to see that when I moved to ah the the foot area of our tent.
00:08:46
Speaker
And it was just awesome. I woke up and I was like, what is that bright light up there? And I was looking up and it was, I had to put my glasses on because I could see the bright dots, but I couldn't make out enough to be stars without my glasses.
00:08:59
Speaker
And like I was like, I those are stars I see. And it was foggy, so I didn't think I was going to be able to see any stars because earlier in the evening when we had first gone to bed, I couldn't see any stars.
00:09:10
Speaker
And I thought, oh, okay. But the Lord woke me up at about three in the morning and I was awake for a little over an hour. And i just, I wasn't sleepy. And he used that time so just be with me.
00:09:23
Speaker
And i was just so filled with his Holy Spirit and thankfulness and just gratitude for everything because this is our time of of harvest time to receive blessing from him for these appointed times.
00:09:36
Speaker
And it was just wonderful. And it was really kind of funny because there was so much moisture from the fog and and I was concerned about being cold, but we were actually over hot.
00:09:49
Speaker
Both my husband and I were kind of warm and I had to kick off a blanket. And it was, it was so ah foggy and I kept hearing this dripping and I was like, what is dripping? It must be outside the tent.
00:10:01
Speaker
But the moisture had actually been dripping through our tent and it was on some of the plastic floor at the foot of the bed, but we didn't feel anything. There was nothing near our head.
00:10:13
Speaker
It was just dry. And so I just really felt like the Lord had protected us. And um i slept well. And it was just it was just lovely.
00:10:24
Speaker
So that is my testimony ah for my first experience with my very first night of celebration ever with the Feast of Booths. So I hope that you had ah the opportunity to celebrate and in some way for Sukkot this year.
00:10:41
Speaker
And if you are in a different year, ah it is my hope that you will celebrate it in latter years as well. If you are just coming to this in a different year.

Jesus' Resurrection and Initial Disbelief

00:10:50
Speaker
Well, let's get into our reading today.
00:10:53
Speaker
We have a lot a little bit of ah a little bit of a lot to read today.
00:11:00
Speaker
Now, this is still occurring on the third day. So this is still the Feast of First Fruits where Jesus has risen. And we know that he has already appeared to Mary Magdala and and the other disciples, they're not believing.
00:11:19
Speaker
Even when ah Peter and John went running to the tomb and they didn't see, they still didn't understand and they they believed, but they didn't believe. So it says that, I mean, they they believed that something was going on, but they didn't know where his body was and they were still scared of the Jewish leaders.
00:11:39
Speaker
So now there was a little town called Emmaus, and it was about seven miles away from Jerusalem. Two of Jesus's friends were walking to Emmaus. They were not one of the 11. They were Cleopas, I think it was, and another person from Emmaus named Simon, not not the same Peter.
00:11:59
Speaker
And they were talking about the bad things that had happened to Jesus over the two previous, the three days prior. And while they were talking, Jesus came up to them.
00:12:10
Speaker
And he began to talk with them, but their eyes were kept from knowing who he was. What are you talking about? asked Jesus. The two friends stopped walking, and they stood still.
00:12:24
Speaker
Their faces were very sad. One was Cleopas. "'Are you the only person in Jerusalem who has not heard?' he asked. "'Don't you know what's been happening around here?' "'What?' asked Jesus. "'It's about Jesus,' they said. "'He was a prophet. "'What he said was powerful, and what he did was powerful.
00:12:47
Speaker
"'But our leaders at the worship house had him killed, "'and we hoped that he would save our nation.' Now two days have passed, they said, and it's now the third day since this happened.
00:12:59
Speaker
Now women from our group told us something surprising. And early this morning they went to the grave, but Jesus' body was not there. The women said they saw angels, and these angels told them that Jesus is alive.
00:13:15
Speaker
But yet these men are still sad. They don't believe. Then some men from our group went to the grave, they said, and it was just like the women said.
00:13:25
Speaker
They didn't see Jesus. You have a lot to learn, said Jesus. It takes you a while to believe what the prophets said. Didn't the promised one have to go through these things?
00:13:40
Speaker
Then Jesus began telling them about Moses and the prophets, and he made it all very clear to them. He told them what God's word said about himself.
00:13:54
Speaker
Now they came to the town where they were going, and Jesus acted like he would just go on from there. Stay with us, said the two followers. The day is almost over. So Jesus went to stay with them.
00:14:08
Speaker
When they sat down to eat, Jesus picked up the bread. He thanked God for it. Our big Bible actually says that he gave the bracha, which is the the prayer that says, Blessed are you, o Lord, our God, ruler of the universe, who has commanded us to eat the unleavened bread for seven days.
00:14:29
Speaker
Blessed are you who has given us the but grain from the earth and fruit from the vine. We did that blessing during Shavuot as well. It's very similar.
00:14:41
Speaker
Then he started giving the bread to his friends, the matzah. This was the unleavened bread, because remember, they were in the Feast of Unleavened Bread at this time. And that is when they were able to see that it was Jesus.
00:14:56
Speaker
And then suddenly he was gone. The two followers looked at each other. Our big Bible says, didn't our hearts burn when he was speaking to us?
00:15:07
Speaker
Our Bible says, wasn't it wonderful when he talked to us on the road, they said. And it was wonderful when he told us what God's word meant. So they got up and they hurried back to Jerusalem.
00:15:23
Speaker
Now, Cleopas and the other follower from Emmaus, Simon, found Jesus' as followers. Jesus' special friends were there too. They were locked in a in a room, and they kept the door locked because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.
00:15:39
Speaker
It's true, these two friends said. Jesus has come back to life, and Peter saw him. The two from Emmaus told what happened to them, and they told how Jesus had shared the bread.
00:15:53
Speaker
They told how they knew then that he was Jesus. I'm going to pause for a moment and read to us from Mark, the book of Mark.
00:16:07
Speaker
When the disciples had heard that he was alive and had been seen by Mary Magdala, this is verse 11 in Mark chapter 16, they refused to believe. After that, he appeared in a different form to two of them as they were walking on their way to Emmaus.
00:16:24
Speaker
They went and reported it to the rest, but they did not believe them either. So the disciples, Jesus' friends, were still in disbelief.

Faith and Disbelief among Jesus' Disciples

00:16:34
Speaker
Despite having heard testimony from multiple people that Jesus had been seen and he was alive, they still were not believing because they had not seen him themselves.
00:16:48
Speaker
Later, when Jesus appeared to them, the eleven, as they were reclining at the table, he rebuked them for their unbelief and hard-heartedness, because they did not believe those who had seen him after he had been raised.
00:17:09
Speaker
But now Jesus was standing in front of them. Be at peace. Shalom Allahem. That's how I greeted you today. Be at peace, Jesus said. Now they were scared because they thought that they were seeing a ghost.
00:17:24
Speaker
Why are you scared? asked Jesus. Why do you wonder if I am real? Look at my hands. Look at my feet. It's me. Touch me.
00:17:34
Speaker
See? ghost doesn't have skin and bones like I have. And then Jesus showed them his hands. He showed them his feet. They were surprised and they were full of joy, but they could hardly believe their eyes.
00:17:51
Speaker
Do you have anything to eat here? Jesus asked. So they brought him some cooked fish and he ate it. Remember when I was still with you?
00:18:01
Speaker
asked Jesus. I told you all of this would happen. Lots of things are written about me in God's word. Moses wrote about me. The prophets wrote about me.
00:18:12
Speaker
The Psalms are about me. Everything written about me has to come true. Then Jesus said, God the Father sent me Now I am sending you.
00:18:30
Speaker
And Jesus breathed on him. He said, i am giving the Holy Spirit to you.
00:18:38
Speaker
Thomas wasn't there that night. And Jesus' other friends told him, We saw the Lord. But Thomas said, I don't believe it. I'm not going to believe. First, I would have to see the nail marks in his hands.
00:18:52
Speaker
I'd have to touch the places where his nails were. I'd have to put my hand on his side where the spear went in. So a week later, Jesus's friends were in the same house and Thomas was there too.
00:19:05
Speaker
And they still kept all the doors locked. They were still scared. Jesus came again and he stood with his friends. Shalom Alechem.
00:19:17
Speaker
Be at peace, he said. Then Jesus turned to Thomas. Thomas, put your fingers here, said Jesus.
00:19:28
Speaker
Touch my side. Look at my hands. Stop thinking that this is just a story. Believe. e My Lord and my God, and said Thomas.
00:19:43
Speaker
You believe because you see me, said Jesus. But some people won't see me. And they will believe anyways. And God will send good things to them.
00:19:56
Speaker
Our big Bible says, you see because you believe because you have seen. But blessed are those who have not seen and do believe.
00:20:07
Speaker
That is you and me. It is so important to to believe, although we have not seen it. Jesus' disciples had been told that this was going to happen.
00:20:18
Speaker
Other people had witnessed to them, and they still did not believe. It was not until they saw with their own eyes that they believed, and then they became witnesses.
00:20:33
Speaker
They didn't even want to believe, even though they had been there, and other people were telling them. It is so important and it's so hard for people to believe when they don't see. This happened a long time ago, but it is still true today. Jesus has indeed risen from the dead.
00:20:52
Speaker
Our daily application today is that Jesus is alive. It is so important to believe, not that Jesus lived and was a prophet or that he was the son of God.
00:21:07
Speaker
He is the son of God and he is alive now. He is alive. He is the first fruits of those risen from the dead. We too will live again and have eternal life with him if we believe.
00:21:24
Speaker
And God tells us here, Jesus tells us, that when we believe without having seen it, God will bless us for this. I hope that you feel God's blessing on you as you believe that Jesus is alive today.

Encouragement to Celebrate and Spread Faith

00:21:42
Speaker
Well, I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today. i hope that you are excited that Jesus is alive and he is coming back and he will be celebrating the Feast of Booths with us.
00:21:54
Speaker
Maybe not us personally, but with people on earth, he will be celebrating. the Feast of Booths, the Feast of Tents, when he returns.
00:22:04
Speaker
And we read today that and everybody who does not go up and worship him and celebrate with that Feast of Tents, that they will have consequences for not doing so.
00:22:17
Speaker
It will not rain and there will be other consequences for them if they do not choose to obey. Let us choose to obey and and live under God's blessing.
00:22:28
Speaker
and for ah keeping his appointed times for us. I hope that you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you get around to watching or listening to today's October 8th daily reading from our day-by-day kids Bible series.
00:22:43
Speaker
I hope that you are enjoying the understanding that we are getting from God's word this year and the daily application. And I hope that you are continuing to find it just as applicable today as you would any other day.
00:22:57
Speaker
If you are encouraged and feel that God has lit your light, please click that light button at the end so that we can help shine our light. We are also the light of the world because Jesus lives with us.
00:23:08
Speaker
And we read today in Zechariah that jesus like God's name will be oneness. And we have been learning how we are all one with God. Let's spread the word about reading God's word so that others know that they need to also hear and believe and that they will be blessed for doing so and also to observe God's feast of tents so that we can live in obedience.
00:23:35
Speaker
I will be here for everyone again for tomorrow's daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. And until then, have a very blessed day.
