IMPORTANT: The Day of Atonement is this week! If you are interested in viewing a Messianic Jewish service for the Day of Atonement there will be TWO SERVICES- One on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at 7pm and one on October 7, 2025 at 6:30pm Pacific Time. Here is the link where you can listen to the livestream: https://www.treeoflifeca.org/live-stream/

Today's reading will include Matthew Chapter 26:3-5 and 26:14-29, Mark Chapter 14:1-2, 10-17, and 22-25, Luke Chapters 21:37-22:20, and John Chapter 12:37-13:1.

In today's reading we will read and discuss about many of the Jewish leaders believing in Jesus but not choosing to stand up for their faith. In today's reading Jesus tells us that He came into the world be a light and people who believe in him don't stay in darkness. We are called to be the light of the world. We need to be leaders, leading others to Jesus, rather than putting our light under a bowl, being afraid to stand up for our faith because doing so might affect us socially and cause us to be considered unpopular, the same thing the Jewish leaders who believed in Jesus were afraid of.

If you enjoyed today's reading and feel like God has lit YOUR light please click the LIGHT button (it looks like a thumbs up or a heart) and consider subscribing to or following my channel, if you have not done so already.

If you know someone who might be interested in reading the Bible with me this year please SHARE today's reading with them! It's never too late to join in! Let's help this event grow and together we can spread the word about reading God's Word!

Introduction and Purpose

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome back! We are here for another daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. Today is September 27th. I am Robin. I am with In The Family Way Coaching and it is my pleasure and joy to be your reader as we go through this wonderful version of the Bible this year.
00:00:22
Speaker
We are reading through the entire Bible. We are learning the whole big story from Genesis to Revelation so that we can learn and understand about God's great big picture for us.

Commitment to Bible Reading

00:00:36
Speaker
And we are coming to the part of the story that is very, very important. We are coming to the part where Jesus is going to die for our sins. So if you have not been following along with us, stick around because we are getting to the good stuff here.
00:00:53
Speaker
And it brings into focus everything that we've been learning throughout the year. Today, we are going to be talking about social ah acceptance and the importance of being leaders in the world.
00:01:08
Speaker
But before we do that, we are going to take out our bookmarking commitment calendar and we're going to mark off our days. Today is, as I said, the 27th. I have my sticker on there.
00:01:20
Speaker
So why do we use this calendar? It's your bookmark. If you are following along at home and you're not reading the Bible, you're listening to it with me.
00:01:32
Speaker
And you might be busy for a couple of days. You might forget where you left off. And instead of trying to remember, oh where was I? What reading did I listen to? I'll just listen to today's reading.
00:01:43
Speaker
This is meant to encourage you to stick with the story. Don't skip chapters. Don't skip areas or days. Stick with it, because it is important to understand all of God's big picture for us.
00:01:58
Speaker
So instead of being tempted to just pick up wherever we are today, this helps keep you in line. Maybe you haven't had time to listen for two weeks or three weeks or even a month. It does not matter.
00:02:09
Speaker
You get that calendar out, you mark off your day, and that's your bookmark. If you were reading in a novel or in another story, you wouldn't just skip to whatever you think you might be reading today, would you?
00:02:22
Speaker
Nope, you'd pick up right where you left off. And since you're not actually reading it, you're hearing it, this is your bookmark as to where you left off when you were listening. So I hope that you are finding the calendar helpful.
00:02:36
Speaker
If you are interested in downloading that calendar, you can go ahead and head over to my site. I have a link in the description below where you can find the daily calendar. You can find it at inthefamilywaycoaching.com and then click on the tab for Read the Bible in One Year.
00:02:53
Speaker
Now, don't go any further than that, because below that, you'll have all of the different months so that wherever you're picking up, you can listen to it directly from my site. But the calendar is located right there on that tab for Read the Bible in One Year.
00:03:06
Speaker
And then each month i put the fresh calendar up.
00:03:10
Speaker
Well, let's get going with our daily reading today, now that we've had our little bit of introduction. Oh,

The Day of Atonement Significance

00:03:16
Speaker
I do wanna mention a couple of other things. I wanna keep us on track for our appointed times.
00:03:21
Speaker
And I've not been talking about this one, but we actually have another one coming up. In this fall season, we actually have a number of appointed times. We had the blasting of the shofar last week.
00:03:34
Speaker
This week is actually the Day of Atonement. And this is my first year in attending a Messianic Jewish congregation. And so I really haven't known everything.
00:03:45
Speaker
I don't know everything. I just want to make that clear. I do not know everything. So as I learn, I like to share what God is teaching me. And we are observing the Day of Atonement. And you may be thinking, well, why do we need to do that?
00:04:01
Speaker
Jesus already paid for my atonement. He's about ready to do so in our reading very soon. And that is so. But we need to remember that he paid for that atonement.
00:04:12
Speaker
And it is still ah day that God has asked us to set aside ah to be special, to remember him. So it's actually commanded, it says to be a statute to remember forever.
00:04:25
Speaker
So it still tells us that we are meant to observe it, to remember it. We are not making sacrifice sacrifice for our sins because Jesus already did that.
00:04:36
Speaker
So ah we are ah you can actually watch online the service that goes along with it if if you are interested in doing that. And I will make a link to the Messianic Jewish congregation where I attend because the rabbi hosts the ah the sermons.
00:04:57
Speaker
So you can actually live stream it on the Day of Atonement. Now it's always, I have to admit, a little bit confusing to me that these one-day holidays are actually two days. And I'm not entirely sure why.
00:05:09
Speaker
i think it's because the day but begins for the biblical calendar at sundown. And so it's actually listed on the calendar as on Wednesday as being the eve of the Day of Atonement.
00:05:21
Speaker
But it marks the beginning of what is traditionally 25-hour fast. And then we will have another servant service on Thursday.
00:05:32
Speaker
I believe both are at 7 p.m. And it is a Shabbat rest on both days. So I will be taking Wednesday and Thursday off. And I want to encourage you to do the same because these are appointed times for God.
00:05:49
Speaker
That means he's going to be showing up for us. And I want to encourage you that if you don't have any other place to participate in a service for this day, it would be educational because I spoke to the rabbi today and I said, I'm very confused. I don't know about this.
00:06:04
Speaker
And ah so he will be teaching and we'll be reading from Hebrews, he said. And that's all I know. but He said, we definitely said, you're right. we We are our sins have been atoned for.
00:06:17
Speaker
But what it does is it releases us from we we have a tendency to put earthly responsibilities on ourselves, like earthly responsibilities. So commitments that we don't we're not we don't need to be doing and i just know that little bit about it so ah i just wanted to encourage you to observe that time we had last week as i mentioned the blasting of the shaffar this week we have the day of atonement and guess what next week is starts the sevenday feast of the tabernacles which we spoke of yesterday
00:06:49
Speaker
So we are entering into the very holy time of the year where God has a lot of appointment times for us. So he when he has a point appointed times for us, he is there and it's up to us to show up and honor his commandments to observe these things.
00:07:10
Speaker
And um he is faithful with us. So we need to be faithful with him. So I wanted to encourage us in that before we get going with our daily reading. And with

Betrayal of Jesus: Prophecy Fulfilled

00:07:20
Speaker
that said, let's head into it.
00:07:22
Speaker
Our first section is entitled 30 Silver Coins. I think we know where this is going.
00:07:35
Speaker
The leaders of God's people got together at the high priest's palace. They made plans to catch Jesus by some trick. Then they would kill him. And they planned carefully.
00:07:48
Speaker
We won't do it while the Passover holiday is going on, because if we do, the people might start fights against us, they said. Now Judas was one of Jesus's 12 special friends, but Satan can took control of Judas now.
00:08:04
Speaker
So Judas went to the leaders at the worship house, and he told them that he would show them where Jesus was. What will you give me if I do? He asked.
00:08:17
Speaker
The leaders counted out 30 silver coins for Judas. Judas took the money. And then he waited and he watched. He looked for a time when no crowds were around.
00:08:31
Speaker
Every day Jesus went into the worship house to teach. And people came out early in the morning to hear him. And at the end of every day, he left the city. And he spent the night on Olive Mountain.
00:08:44
Speaker
Now, people had seen Jesus do many wonders, but many people still would not believe in him. So Isaiah's words came true. Isaiah said, Who believed our news?
00:09:00
Speaker
Who did God show himself to? And Isaiah said something else, too. Their eyes cannot see. Their hearts are dead.
00:09:12
Speaker
They don't see or understand. If they did, i would make them well. And when Isaiah said this, he was talking about Jesus.
00:09:26
Speaker
Now, many of the Jewish leaders did believe in Jesus, but they didn't talk about it because they were afraid of the leaders who didn't believe. And it was because of those leaders that if they said that they believed, that they might not get into the town's worship houses.
00:09:45
Speaker
Now they really loved cheers from people more than they loved cheers from God.
00:09:52
Speaker
People who believe in me also believe in my Father. When you look at me, you see God, said Jesus.
00:10:03
Speaker
I came to the world to be a light. And people who believe in me don't stay in darkness. Some people hear what I say, said Jesus.
00:10:17
Speaker
But they do not do what I say. I'm not here to blame them. ah came to save them. And I'm going to actually complete that verse here in our big Bible because they don't include it.
00:10:35
Speaker
The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge. The word I spoke will judge him on the last day.
00:10:48
Speaker
For I did not speak on my own, but the Father himself who sent me has commanded me to say and speak, and I know that his commandment is life everlasting.
00:11:03
Speaker
Therefore, what I say i just say, I say just as the Father has told me, said Jesus.
00:11:15
Speaker
At last, the Passover day came, and Jesus sent Peter and John into the city. Go find a place to eat the Passover dinner, said Jesus, and get everything ready for the dinner.
00:11:29
Speaker
Where? they asked him. Go into the city, said Jesus, and you will see a man carrying a jar of water. Follow him. He will go into a house.
00:11:42
Speaker
Find the owner of that house and tell him. Jesus wants to know something. Where can he eat the Passover dinner? Where is the room?
00:11:55
Speaker
And that man will show you a big room upstairs. It has a table and seats in it, and that is where you will get the dinner ready, said Jesus.
00:12:07
Speaker
So Peter and John left, and things happened just the way Jesus said they would. And so they got the Passover dinner ready. Dinner time came, and Jesus and his twelve special friends gathered around the table.
00:12:24
Speaker
I wanted to eat Passover dinner with you, said Jesus. A time of pain is coming for me, and I will not eat this Passover dinner again, not until it has a new meaning in the kingdom of God.
00:12:42
Speaker
Jesus held up a cup of wine, and he thanked God. Take this, he told his friends, and share it with each other. i will not drink wine again until God's kingdom comes.
00:12:57
Speaker
Then Jesus picked up the flat bread called matzah. He thanked God and he broke some off to give to his friends. This will help you remember my body, he said.
00:13:11
Speaker
I am giving my body for you. Eat this to remember me.
00:13:19
Speaker
They finished dinner and then Jesus picked up the cup of wine This shows God's new special promise, he said. It's a promise made with my blood, and I will give my blood for you.
00:13:39
Speaker
Jesus knew it was time to leave the world, and it was time for him to go to his father. He loved his friends very much. They were his own people here in the world.
00:13:50
Speaker
And he was about to show how much he loved them.
00:13:56
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Courage and Faith in Social Context

00:14:03
Speaker
I always start to get sad at this point. He's so close. And although I know that he has already risen and that this took place a long time ago, it just, it always um makes me feel very emotional. I don't know about you.
00:14:19
Speaker
So as I mentioned, we are going to be talking about social acceptance. So we see here that people had seen Jesus do many wonders and a lot of people didn't believe in him.
00:14:32
Speaker
But a lot of people did believe in him. Even the leaders, some of the Jewish, it says not just some, but many of the Jewish leaders actually did believe in Jesus.
00:14:44
Speaker
But they didn't talk about it. They were afraid of the other leaders who didn't believe because if they talked about it, those leaders might do what's called excommunicate them.
00:15:00
Speaker
We have a tendency to be so tied, wanting to be part of the communities where we are. And people know that we don't want to feel rejected.
00:15:12
Speaker
Well, Jesus was rejected. He was the stone that the builders rejected. and yet he has become the cornerstone.
00:15:23
Speaker
These people, instead of rejecting the stone, They believed, but they didn't do what he said. They were not bold in their faith. They were meant to be lights in the world.
00:15:36
Speaker
And instead of being that light, they kept quiet about it because they didn't want to be excommunicated. They didn't want to be looked at poorly by the people.
00:15:49
Speaker
Now, what's interesting is that they probably would have actually been looked more favorably upon by the people. But we know that the Jewish people were meant to not accept him for a good deal of time.
00:16:05
Speaker
A lot of them did, but many did not. So in the church itself, in the Jewish church itself, they deny it. But we know that even today, there are many Jewish people who do believe in the Messiah and they are called completed Jews.
00:16:23
Speaker
And then when they go to church, they go to the synagogue for Messianic Jews because they believe that the Messiah is Jesus. Or as we say in Hebrew, Yeshua.
00:16:38
Speaker
So they needed to be leaders. Jesus tells us today, he says he came into the world to be a light and people who believe in him don't stay in darkness.
00:16:50
Speaker
Who has also become the light of the world?
00:16:55
Speaker
That's right, we have. We are lived by Jesus with his light. He came into the world to be the light of the world. He is a light to our path, like a lamp for our feet.
00:17:10
Speaker
It's like walking at night, like and and let's say you're camping, because or if in the middle of the night at home, maybe you don't want to turn all the lights on because, oh, it's so bright, hurts our eyes.
00:17:22
Speaker
So we pretty much know how to find our own bathroom a lot of times. And as we're walking around, you still have to be careful, or you might kick your foot into something, and that hurts. Or you might step on those Legos or some other type of thing in the middle of the night.
00:17:37
Speaker
You know what I'm talking about. So we might put on just a little light. We might put on like a nightlight so that we can see. Jesus is like that nightlight that we can see in the dark.
00:17:50
Speaker
The world is full of darkness, but Jesus helps us to see. we won't be in utter darkness when we are believing in Jesus and following him and his light.
00:18:04
Speaker
And just like Jesus, we are meant to be lights in the world so that we can lead other people to Jesus. Not to lead people to ourselves, but to lead people to Jesus so that they too can believe in him as the Messiah and have everlasting life and be part of the same sheepfold as we are, be part of our family.
00:18:28
Speaker
So it's important and that when we are believers, that we be that light and that we not be as concerned about what other people might think about us.
00:18:38
Speaker
Are we going to lose some friends potentially? It's possible. It was definitely a real thing at at Jesus's time because he was bringing change into the world.
00:18:50
Speaker
And we know how we feel about change. We don't like to do things differently. And that was how the leaders were viewing it. They didn't even want to do what they were doing in the open because even they were afraid of the people's response because they knew that he was known to the people.
00:19:09
Speaker
Now, it was necessary for Jesus to die. We know that. But we also need to remember that they did not take his life. He could have fled. He could have left and gone. We know the world is a very big place.
00:19:23
Speaker
And if he had simply left and gone away and just never done anything ever again and never spoken there, he would would have lived out his life. But the fact is, is that Jesus tells us today that he was going to spread to shed his blood to pay for our sins.
00:19:42
Speaker
So it was necessary. Jesus says, but it woe to the man through whom it is necessary through. So for Judas, who was to betray him with 30 pieces of silver, which if you remember when we were reading, oh my goodness, I'm drawing a blank as to who it was.
00:20:02
Speaker
ah One of the prophets, Jeremiah, I think it was Jeremiah. He said, if you find my my counsel, Jesus, valuable what will you pay me for it and they said 30 pieces of silver or something like 30 something like 30 pieces of silver i think is what it was and we talked about that that that was prophetic for the 30 pieces that jew that judas would be given it was it sounds like a lot of money 30 pieces of silver but it was actually ah very cheap amount
00:20:35
Speaker
Cheap, cheap, cheap. And he said it was poultry. And he said, this is all you feel that I am worth? And he tossed it aside. I'm pretty sure that was Jeremiah.
00:20:48
Speaker
And it was just ridiculously low. So Judas basically accepted just a very pitiful amount. They didn't even give him a lot.
00:21:01
Speaker
Jesus's life wasn't worth that much to them.
00:21:07
Speaker
But we can see all kinds of ah scripture that was fulfilled in it. So Jesus chose to go willingly, like a sheep to the slaughter, because this was the Passover time, where God's judgment would pass over those who accepted and believed and had faith.
00:21:28
Speaker
And they put the mark on the door at the lentils, the top and the left and the right side, which would be a foreshadowing of Jesus's atonement for our sins.
00:21:41
Speaker
The leaders there, they could have encouraged the the people by showing where they he had fulfilled the scripture and like that. They believed, so they knew, but they did not step forward. They didn't
00:21:57
Speaker
They didn't act on their faith. They were quiet because they didn't want to disrupt the the status quo. We can do that in our lives too.
00:22:08
Speaker
We can be a follower of Jesus and just feel like, oh, well, I'll just keep quiet about things. And we're not meant to keep quiet about things. We're meant to be a light of the world, which means we stand out.
00:22:23
Speaker
We are meant to be leaders in the world. We are only meant to follow Jesus. We're not meant to be

Final Encouragement and Testimony

00:22:30
Speaker
crowd followers and follow along what everybody else is doing because we don't want them to speak poorly about us.
00:22:37
Speaker
Today, we have a lot of social media where if you're not popular with what's the the going thing, it creates a lot of disturbance. Oh, they're not following along.
00:22:47
Speaker
And then people do what we call trash talk. they They want to speak poorly. And that's exactly what would have been going on in other tight knit communities, especially at this time and in other churches too.
00:23:01
Speaker
It's not uncommon for them to be kicked out of the church. And so since a lot of our community can be based there, this was a big deal to them. They did not want to be kicked out.
00:23:12
Speaker
It says here that they were afraid of the leaders who didn't believe because of those leaders, they might not get into the town's worship houses. So they didn't want to be kicked out of the worship houses.
00:23:25
Speaker
They didn't want to lose their status. They were afraid to be different. They were afraid to stand up for what they believed in. So I want to encourage us not to stick with the status quo.
00:23:40
Speaker
If we know something is going wrong, even in our churches, If they're not following along, this is where we need to start making change and and reminding our churches that we need to be observing these moedim.
00:23:55
Speaker
If we see other things where people are making man-made rules instead of following God's rules and making these man-made rules important, then we need to be able to stand up and make sure that people are not being blocked.
00:24:11
Speaker
We need to stand up be willing say, what you're teaching is not right. And it's more common than we might think.
00:24:20
Speaker
what you're teaching is not right and it's more common than we might think but we in we may have to leave that church because we don't agree with what they are doing and they are unwilling to be corrected and go where God leads us, where we can be accepted for doing the right thing.
00:24:40
Speaker
These leaders, they could have formed new churches. It wasn't popular, but they could have formed believing Messianic Jewish congregations. And we see that that's exactly what ended up happening.
00:24:53
Speaker
People met in homes, we will We will see that. And the church as we know it to- today grew. And it did start also not just with the Gentiles. It was brought to the Gentiles. But first, Jesus came to the Jewish people.
00:25:11
Speaker
So we want to remember these things and see that they they would have been on the the side of doing right if they had simply stood up for what was right, for what they believed in.
00:25:23
Speaker
We don't think that we can have that kind of an impact today, but we really can. but The impact is not finished in the world. We are meant to be the light of the world, the salt of the earth, drawing people to Jesus, being In the world, while not being of the world.
00:25:44
Speaker
And so Jesus also says here, he says, some people hear what I say, but they don't do what I say. And he may not be here to blame them at the time, right now.
00:25:55
Speaker
But when he comes back to judge the world, that is when they will be judged.
00:26:03
Speaker
And we don't want to be counted as part of that with like we learned yesterday with the sheep and the goats. We want to be a sheep. We don't want to be a goat. People will think that they have been ah believers, but they were not following. They were not doing what Jesus said.
00:26:18
Speaker
And he says that you have to forsake the world in order to follow him. So it's a little bit of a long lesson today on that. I hope you don't feel it's a little too repetitive, but ah that is our daily application for today.
00:26:34
Speaker
So I want to encourage you to be bold, to stand up for your faith, to have these experiences with God and then testify about them, which is our witness. We want to draw others into God's kingdom.
00:26:47
Speaker
We don't want to be discouraged by the world. We want to be encouraged by our savior and follow him without fear. Because we want to ah receive God's praises. We want to love God's praises more than man.
00:27:04
Speaker
and And the good words that come from people. We have to have our priorities in line. I hope that you do feel that God has lit your light today and that you do feel embraced and emboldened to be able to speak your faith in those difficult situations where it may be unpopular.
00:27:22
Speaker
And if you do, then I would encourage you to click that light button. Let's encourage others to check out this message, to read God's word, to ah spread the word about reading God's word.
00:27:36
Speaker
and to also be lights in the world as we are meant to be jesus says nobody lights a light and puts it under a bowl let's let those let that light shine these leaders they had put their light under a bowl We want to not put our light under a bowl, but to light up the world for Jesus and point people to Jesus.
00:27:58
Speaker
Because Jesus tells us that when ah people believe in him, they're actually believing in God. And when you we look at Jesus, we are seeing God.
00:28:14
Speaker
This is important. What else can I say? Well, thank you for joining me today. i hope that you enjoyed this reading and that you are encouraged in your daily life and that you ask God to show you where you can be that light in the world for him.
00:28:30
Speaker
I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you get around to watching or listening. And you know where I'll be tomorrow. I'll be right here. Even if tomorrow is not for, you know, a couple of days ah until you get around to hearing the the daily reading.
00:28:45
Speaker
Until then, hope that you are a light in the world and are speaking up for Jesus. See you next time.
