Shalom aleichem!  Peace be to you! Today is the fourth day of the Feast of Tabernacles in 2025, also known as the Feast of Tents or Sukkot. I accidentally called it the third day on the recording, but rest assured, today is the fourth day! haha!

CORRECTION: I also misspoke today when I said that the Book of Acts was written by John. It was written by LUKE, not John. Sorry about that!

If you would like to watch the Sukkot sermon from the Messianic Jewish congregation I attend for Tree of Life, you can watch HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITj_GPZqS5c

If you would like to download my FREE calendar for keeping track of your commitment to read the Bible every day, you can find that on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/pages/read-the-bible-in-1-year

Monthly memberships to support this event can be purchased on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/offering_packages

Today's reading will include the Book of Acts Chapter 1:1-5, and 12-26.

Today we will read about Peter taking the directions Jesus gave him to heart- to feed His lambs, take care of His sheep, and feed his sheep. We will see Peter stepping up as a leader among the disciples, leading them into understanding of the scriptures about Judas' fulfillment of himself in the Psalms of his betrayal. Peter showed us understanding of the scripture, seeing that another person was to take Judas' place as the replacement 12th apostle, so he led by example by asking God to direct them as to who should be the replacement apostle.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how we, like Peter, have been growing this year in our maturity and understanding of God's Word to look to scripture, as he did today, by looking for daily application in our reading to show us how to behave and how NOT to behave, as well as learning to look to God for HIS will in our lives, by making God and Jesus the most important ones in our lives, rather than looking to do our own will. We were encouraged today that once we know God's will to follow through and DO it, rather than doing what we would rather do ourselves.

Introduction and Personal Story

Speaker
Shalom Aleichem everybody! Peace be to you. Today is our third day of the Feast of Tents. And I hope you are are having a very blessed time during this whole high holy time.
00:00:16
Speaker
i know for me, we had some rain last night and I had to abandon tent. My husband sleeps with a BiPAP machine, so we have a battery for that that goes out with us and when we camp or um if we have a power outage, we have a battery backup for that.
00:00:32
Speaker
And i just didn't think it was a good idea for him to be having an electrical device connected to him and having rain coming down through the the tent. So I wasn't sure exactly how much rain there was going to be. So I felt a little guilty for having abandoned tent.
00:00:48
Speaker
But when I got up this morning and went out, there was quite a bit of puddling in the tent where I would i needed to mop it up. So I felt like I had done the the safe thing there.
00:00:58
Speaker
And the blankets were quite wet. So I had to put them in the dryer. So I'm considering extending our day ah by an extra night to make up for the one that we had to abandon for next week.
00:01:10
Speaker
but Just adding one more day to it. Well, I hope that you are having a fantastic

Daily Bible Reading Introduction

00:01:15
Speaker
day. Today is October 10th, and we are here together for our daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:01:24
Speaker
I'm so glad that you are joining us during this high holy time, whether you are listening on your podcast whether you are watching the video somewhere. I'm just so glad that you are listening somewhere. If you are using your bookmarking commitment calendar, it's time to get that out.
00:01:40
Speaker
Get your sticker or whatever it is you are using to mark off your day because we are about to hear the Bible today.
00:01:50
Speaker
Today, we are going to be looking at where to go when we are looking for direction. what What actions do we take? And we're also going to be looking at obedience.

Peter's Love and Leadership Questioning

00:02:03
Speaker
Peter was given task, as we saw yesterday, when Jesus asked him, do you love me? Three different times. And Peter was instructed to feed his lambs by peter or by Jesus.
00:02:19
Speaker
And he was instructed to take care of his sheep. And then lastly, he was ah told to feed Jesus's sheep.
00:02:30
Speaker
So lambs are gonna be symbolic of young or immature believers, not simply children, but we are we look at ourselves in in our maturity level as being, um when we're just learning, it's like being an infant where we are just you giving ah being given the milk, just the basics.
00:02:52
Speaker
This year we have been getting more than just milk, we have been getting meat. And so we have become more mature in our belief and in our faith this year.
00:03:03
Speaker
And so Peter was instructed to feed the lambs, meaning to take care of those who are new believers.

Disciples Return and Peter's Address

00:03:10
Speaker
And to take care of the sheep that he has right now. He's to look over the sheep. He's to take care of them. When you take care of the sheep, you you look out for them.
00:03:20
Speaker
And then lastly, he was told to feed the sheep. So he's not being told to give them physical food. He's being told to give them spiritual food.
00:03:32
Speaker
And so today we are going to see Peter immediately taking his ah commands to heart and following in obedience to what Jesus has told him to do. So today are going to begin, well, yesterday we actually began the book of Acts, believe it or not, when we ah read ah the the last part of our reading, where Jesus ascended.
00:03:55
Speaker
That's actually recorded in the book of Acts chapter one in the first, um like verses six through 11. So today we are going to finish the first chapter of Acts.
00:04:07
Speaker
The book of Acts is written by John.
00:04:12
Speaker
So we're going to begin today, and our section is entitled, Another Leader. To the one who loves God. So this letter has been written to all of those of us, you and me, who love God.
00:04:28
Speaker
Once before, I wrote a book about Jesus. It told about what Jesus said and did until he went to heaven. Before he left, Jesus told his best friends what to do, the disciples.
00:04:43
Speaker
Jesus had gone through a lot of pain. He had died, and then he had showed up alive. His followers saw him many times for 40 days, and he told them about God's kingdom.
00:04:58
Speaker
So these were the days leading up through Shavuot, when they were counting up to Shavuot. So there were the three days that he was in the grave, and then there were 40 days that he appeared.
00:05:10
Speaker
So now we're at 43. So there was approximately seven days left in between the time that Jesus ascended. And the time that they were supposed to receive the Holy Spirit on Shavuot. But they didn't know it was going to be on Shavuot.
00:05:25
Speaker
So this is talking about that time after 40th day. While there are, 43rd day rather. While there are seven days. So one once Jesus had said to his friends, don't leave Jerusalem.
00:05:42
Speaker
Wait for the gift my father promised to give you. You heard me talk about it. Now you will be baptized with the holy spirit Jesus had gone back to heaven, and after he left, his best friends went back to Jerusalem.
00:06:02
Speaker
It wasn't even a mile away from the place where Jesus had left them. Jesus' friends went to the house where they were staying, and they went upstairs to their room. Peter was there, John, James, and Andrew were there.
00:06:19
Speaker
Philip was there with Thomas, Nathaniel, and Matthew. The other James was there too. Simon and the other Judas were also there, and they kept praying together.
00:06:32
Speaker
Jesus' mother and his brothers also met with them, and some other women were there too. Now, there were about 120 other people who were there, too.
00:06:44
Speaker
This must have been a really big room. And they were all people who believed in Jesus. Peter stood up in the group and he said, God's word about Judas had to come true.
00:06:59
Speaker
Judas was one of us. He helped with the work we did. But our leaders paid Judas money, so he showed them where Jesus was.
00:07:10
Speaker
And the Holy Spirit helped David write about Judas long ago, said Peter. David wrote in the Psalms, So we have to choose someone take place of Judas.
00:07:24
Speaker
to choose someone one to take the place of judas Now who has been with us from the start?

Choosing Judas' Replacement

00:07:30
Speaker
asked Peter. Who has been with us since John started baptizing people in water and Jesus was also baptized?
00:07:39
Speaker
Who was with us when Jesus went back to heaven? It must be someone who can tell what he has seen because he must tell how Jesus came back to life. He needed to be a witness.
00:07:53
Speaker
Now, Justice had been with them from the start, and Matthias had also been too. So they prayed to God. God, you know what is in people's hearts.
00:08:05
Speaker
Show us the man you choose. He will take the place of Judas. Then they rolled the dice, and Matthias was chosen by God.
00:08:17
Speaker
So he became one of the twelve. These 12 helpers were now called apostles, and that's because they were being sent to tell everyone about Jesus.
00:08:32
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:08:36
Speaker
It was pretty short today, wasn't it? That doesn't mean we don't have a lot to learn or a lot of daily application, though, that's for sure. So we see here that Peter did what Jesus told him to do.
00:08:49
Speaker
He took a place of leadership. he He stood up and he started to direct them as to which way they should start to go now that they were left on their own. So Jesus, ah after he had told him this and Peter was standing up, the first thing Peter looked to was to the scripture for answer and understanding.

Guidance through Scripture and Prayer

00:09:11
Speaker
That is our first daily application. When we are looking to know what to do, we've had daily application every day this year to teach us what to do and to teach us what not to do at times.
00:09:26
Speaker
So we want to be able to look to the scripture when we are wondering which direction we should take. And we should also pray to God for his direction, for his will.
00:09:39
Speaker
And we saw this example when Jesus taught us how to pray with what we refer to as the Lord's Prayer. And Jesus himself showed us by example when he was praying to God in the garden.
00:09:53
Speaker
when he was about to be taken into custody, that he prayed that if it were possible that this cup be taken away from him, but not his will, but God's will to be done.
00:10:08
Speaker
So here, Peter is leading the group correctly, and might add, by showing us that they asked God to show who he was choosing.
00:10:19
Speaker
Peter narrowed it down to the selection, and they were wise in their selection. They needed someone who could be a thorough witness. And there were two candidates, and then they prayed to God, and they cast the lots, or they threw the dice to see which one God had chosen.
00:10:39
Speaker
And then they went with the person that God chose. They didn't change the the decision and say, oh, you know... I know that that's what it fell on, but we really think it should be justice.
00:10:52
Speaker
No, they went with the decision. They did not waver. They were very determined and motivated to be sure that they obeyed God.
00:11:04
Speaker
And they were also, i love when Peter was looking to the scripture for understanding that he found that in the Psalms, so that was Psalm both 69.
00:11:15
Speaker
Let's see where we are here for that. That was Psalm 69, verse 26, where he says, where he says
00:11:26
Speaker
Let their encampment be deserted. Let none dwell in their tents.
00:11:33
Speaker
For they persecute the one you have smitten. Let's see. That was...
00:11:47
Speaker
For they persecute the one you have smitten. So they tell of the pain of those you have wounded. Add guilt to their guilt. May they not come into your righteousness. May they be wiped out of the book of life and not be recorded with the righteous.
00:12:06
Speaker
And that was about Judas.
00:12:11
Speaker
The second Psalm about Judas, where the the verses were quoted, is Psalm 109. And it starts in verse 7. When he is judged, let him be found guilty, and may his prayer be a sin.
00:12:26
Speaker
Let his days be few, and let another take his position.
00:12:34
Speaker
So these were also fulfillments in in scripture. And so now they were looking ah for the direction where it says, let another take his position.
00:12:46
Speaker
So this directed Peter to do God's will. So let us be encouraged to go to to turn to God's word, both in reading and then in prayer for guidance when we are looking for big

Significance of the Number 12

00:13:00
Speaker
steps to take. This was a big thing that they needed to do.
00:13:03
Speaker
They were meant to be 12. They didn't just say, oh, well, we have one loss. Now we are down to 11. jesus ah Jesus had told them that there would be 12 of them and that they would be sitting on thrones judging over the 12 tribes of Israel.
00:13:20
Speaker
So we see that even here, our number 12, God is very consistent in his symbolism. We have the 12 tribes and then we have the 12 apostles.
00:13:31
Speaker
And ah just love how God is so complete in everything he does. He's got order. And I just love how he does everything so that it is easy for us to see the connections to things.
00:13:43
Speaker
Well, I hope that you are motivated to look to God's word when you have a difficult

Encouragement to Seek God's Will

00:13:50
Speaker
situation in your life and you're not sure what to do about it. To look both to scripture and to turn to God in prayer for asking him what his will is for you in whatever situation you may be facing.
00:14:02
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today, whatever day you get around to hearing this reading or our October 10th reading. And I hope that you have a very blessed rest of your day. If you are so inclined, please click your light button so that we can encourage others to listen to the message, to be encouraged to follow Peter's example of looking to the scripture and praying for God's will and then doing it. It's not enough just to look for it and then listen for it.
00:14:30
Speaker
We must also do it. And so he was faithful, Peter was, to do all that Jesus had commanded them to do. And we want to encourage others to do the same thing.
00:14:41
Speaker
We are to make followers. out of of people for for Jesus, to teaching teaching them to obey everything that he has given us to do. So Peter has already taken that into heart.
00:14:54
Speaker
And I hope that we do the same as well, helping others to obey. And we can do that by spreading the word about reading God's word. So we will know the truth and the Holy Spirit can convict us on that.
00:15:06
Speaker
And then we will be repentant of our sins, as Jesus told us, and ah be encouraged to change our ways. ah I forgot to mention yesterday, as we were talking about Jesus um with the woman who was caught in sin, that not only was there no condemnation for her, but he also told her, go and don't do it any anymore.
00:15:29
Speaker
Stop sinning. So we are encouraged to stop sinning after we come into our saving grace and have repented of our sin. We are sorry for it. We have confessed it.
00:15:43
Speaker
So have a fantastic rest of your day. I hope that you will join me again tomorrow for today for our daily reading tomorrow out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:15:54
Speaker
You know where to find me, wherever you are listening or watching to this event. Until then, have a blessed day.
