Today's reading will comes to us from Matthew Chapters 27:39-54, Mark Chapters 15:29-39, Luke Chapter 22:35-48 and John Chapter 19:25-30.

Today we will read about Jesus' choice not to save himself from death but rather He chose to save US by atoning for our sins so that we would become One with Him, God, and each other. He truly is our Good Shepherd who laid down His life for us. We will also read about the veil being torn in the temple that kept God's Holy and sinless presence separated from our sinfulness in the Most Holy Place in the temple.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about not taking for granted this incredible gifts that Jesus has given us- not just the gift of atonement for our sins, but the gift of access to God, which is a far different relationship with God than what was experienced with the Old Covenant. We are now under God's New Covenant, made with Jesus' atoning blood, so that now we have been given God's Holy Spirit to be in us. We are now One with Jesus and God AND one another! We have truly becoming united, not to mention the gifts of having God's Law written on our hearts and eternal life with God and Jesus! You and I never experienced the Old Covenant. We have only ever known the New Covenant, so we want to be sure that we don't take these incredible gifts for granted. There are still those living under the Old Covenant. We need to share the news with our Jewish brothers and sisters that they, too, can experience God's permanent atonement by accepting Jesus as the Messiah, who paid this price for all of us!

00:01:49
Speaker
Because we are going to hear the Bible today.

Direct Access to God

00:01:55
Speaker
Well, today we have a very important thing we're going to be reading about. Now, we can take this for granted because it's always been this way for us, that we have direct access to God, that we have been talking about how we are one with Jesus and one with God.
00:02:12
Speaker
But this was an entirely new thing that God brought about with his new covenant. Jesus was fulfilling the old covenant, not abolishing the law, but fulfilling it.
00:02:25
Speaker
And it used to be that people did not have direct access to God. Only sometimes would the Holy Spirit come upon somebody. And they might be the high priest and they might prophesy.
00:02:38
Speaker
And it was only a temporary thing. But it wasn't something that the average person could expect to experience on a regular basis. And now we can have a tendency to to potentially take that for granted now that we have been gifted with the Holy Spirit.
00:02:56
Speaker
Because now we have access and connection to God all the time. And this was not something that the people had before. It used to be that God's presence was only in the Holy of Holies place, the most holy place in the temple.
00:03:14
Speaker
And that area was separated with a curtain. And the only one who was permitted to go back there was the priest during the Day of Atonement, which we just had last week.
00:03:28
Speaker
And he would first have to make atonement for his sins and his family's sins. And then he was permitted to enter the most holy place. That's also the place where the taber are the Ark of the Covenant was kept.
00:03:42
Speaker
And on the Ark of the Covenant, there were the two cherubim. And there was in the center, it was called the mercy seat. And that is where God's presence was.

Crucifixion Events

00:03:53
Speaker
So there was lot going on and we don't have that any anymore because now Jesus has prayed for us and that we would also become one with one another and with him and God.
00:04:06
Speaker
And so today we are going to be seeing the moment that that became possible for us as Jesus died. So let's head on to our reading. Our first section is entitled Close to the Cross.
00:04:22
Speaker
I'm not really sure why they call it that because he's already on the cross. As we left off yesterday, ah the guards had just rolled dice, cast lots to divide up Jesus's clothing among them.
00:04:37
Speaker
Now people passed by the crosses. Remember, there were three of them there right now. And they yelled bad words at Jesus. And some of them shook their heads. You were going to tear down the worship house, they yelled.
00:04:51
Speaker
But you said you'd build it again in three days. So why don't you save yourself? Come down from the cross if you are God's son. And the leaders of God's people made fun of Jesus too.
00:05:05
Speaker
He saved other people, they said. Why can't he save himself? Is he the king of God's people? Then let him come down from the cross.
00:05:16
Speaker
We'll believe in him if he does. He trusts in God. Let God save him now. After all, Jesus said he is God's son. The guards made fun of Jesus too, and they asked him if he wanted some sour wine.
00:05:34
Speaker
They said, if you're the Jews king, save yourself. One of the men being killed alongside Jesus also made fun of him. "'Aren't you the promised one?' he asked.
00:05:48
Speaker
"'Then save yourself and save us too.' ah the other man being killed, he got angry with the first man. "'Aren't you afraid of God?' he asked him. "'You are going to die too.' The man went on, this is happening to us because we have done wrong.
00:06:08
Speaker
We are getting what was coming to us. But Jesus didn't do anything wrong. He shouldn't be killed. Then the man said, Jesus, remember me when you get to your kingdom.
00:06:24
Speaker
Jesus said, you will get to be with me in heaven today.
00:06:31
Speaker
Jesus' mother stood close to the cross. His aunt was there too, and another Mary and Mary Magdalene were also there. Jesus looked out. He saw his mother.
00:06:44
Speaker
He saw his friend John there too. "'Dear woman,' Jesus said to his mother, "'John will be like your son now. and "'Take care of her,' he told John. "'Care for her like you would care for your own mother.' And after that, John let Jesus' mother stay at his house, and he took care of her.
00:07:09
Speaker
Now the sky got dark around noon, and darkness covered the land until about three o'clock in the afternoon. And at that time, Jesus gave a loud cry.
00:07:22
Speaker
He cried out, My God, my God, you why did you leave me He is calling for Elijah, said some of the people.
00:07:34
Speaker
Now Jesus knew his time on earth was finished. I'm thirsty, he said. And right away somebody ran to get a cloth and he got it wet with sour wine and then he put it on a stick.
00:07:50
Speaker
He held it up to Jesus so he could drink. This was fulfilling Psalm 69, verse 21, about giving him sour drink. Then they put it on a stick and he held it up to Jesus so he could drink it.
00:08:05
Speaker
Leave him alone, said the other people, and let's see if Elijah will come and save him.
00:08:12
Speaker
Jesus drank some of the sour wine and then he said, It is finished. He cried out in a loud voice. He said, Father, i give my spirit to you.
00:08:27
Speaker
and then he bowed his head and he died.
00:08:32
Speaker
When he spoke this, he was quoting Psalm 31, verse six.
00:08:38
Speaker
Inside the worship house, there hung a big long cloth. It hung in front of the most holy place. It kept people out of that room.
00:08:50
Speaker
But at the moment Jesus died, it tore in half. The tear started at the top and it ripped all the way down to the bottom.
00:09:02
Speaker
And the earth shook, rocks broke, graves came open, and dead people came back to life. These were people who had done right while they were living.
00:09:15
Speaker
And their bodies came out of the graves. They went into the city of Jerusalem, and lots of people saw them.

Fulfillment of Prophecies

00:09:24
Speaker
The guards who were at Skull Hill saw the earth shake, and they were very scared.
00:09:30
Speaker
He really was God's son, they said. And the other people who had been watching felt very sad. They pounded on their chests and walked away.
00:09:43
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:09:50
Speaker
Wow. Well, we saw some more fulfilling of prophecy in Psalm 69, in Psalm 22.
00:10:01
Speaker
And now let's address the accusation that if Jesus really was the Son of God and he could save other people, but he why couldn't he save himself from this horrible death?
00:10:15
Speaker
The answer is that he chose to go through with this. And rather than save himself, as the good shepherd, he laid down his life for us.
00:10:26
Speaker
Had he chosen to save himself, then he he would not have saved us.
00:10:33
Speaker
He chose to go through that death in order that we might have our sins atoned for. And at the conclusion of his fulfillment of this,
00:10:44
Speaker
The veil tore from top to bottom in the temple so that now God's presence was no longer confined to the most holy of holies.
00:10:57
Speaker
And now we, you and i will have the Holy Spirit given to us when we believe, as we've already done. i'm assuming you're a believer here today because Jesus got that veil torn.
00:11:12
Speaker
in order to stop that separation between God and us. There is now no longer any condemnation for those of us who believe in Jesus. There are so many things that happened during that time.
00:11:27
Speaker
I want to remind us that this was taking place on the preparation day for Passover. We know that Jesus had already observed the Passover with his friends, the disciples.
00:11:39
Speaker
And so they were finished with theirs. They had done it. There's some differing opinion as to whether why it was conducted early. And it had to do with the area in which he was from in Nazareth in Galilee, that they tended to observe it a day earlier. And I can't really tell us why. i just know that in the past, when I have looked that up, that it was considered appropriate or acceptable for him to do that.
00:12:05
Speaker
So as everybody else, however, in Jerusalem was preparing their Passover lambs, they were commanded to slaughter the Passover lamb at sundown on this day.
00:12:18
Speaker
And that is about the time that Jesus would die. Now we know uh, ah And he
00:12:29
Speaker
the temple leaders didn't want any bodies hanging and they didn't want anybody left a lie so we will see about how they verified the death later on and then took him down but his death was concluded right about the time that the Passover lambs would be slaughtered, very close to that time.

Significance of New Covenant

00:12:50
Speaker
And he was our Passover lamb so that God would pass over our sin. We are now atoned for.
00:12:59
Speaker
There is so much significance in everything that happened, God's timing, the prophecies, everything that was fulfilled exactly the way God wanted it to be done so that we might see and understand and know and believe in everything that occurred so that we might be saved.
00:13:23
Speaker
Well, that is our daily application today. Jesus was God's son. He is God's son. And he did not allow himself to be saved in order that we would be saved.
00:13:34
Speaker
And now our presence is able to be with God because God is with us. And Jesus prayed that as the father was in him and he was in the father, that we would also be in them and that they would be in us.
00:13:51
Speaker
We don't want to take that for granted. This is the new covenant that we have the benefit of being under. We never experienced the old covenant. So let's not take it take it for granted.
00:14:04
Speaker
This beautiful gift that Jesus gave us. Let us remember that. And so that we let us be thankful for that. that he gave us that that access to be one.
00:14:16
Speaker
And remember, we are also one with each other because we are each individually one with Jesus in us and the Holy Spirit within us.
00:14:27
Speaker
So we are in him and he is in us and we are one together because we are connected through God's Holy Spirit and Jesus.
