Today's reading will comes to us from Matthew Chapter 26:36-56, Mark Chapter 14:32-52, Luke Chapter 22:39-53 and John Chapter 18:1-11.

Today we will read about Jesus going to the Garden of Gethsemane, where He prayed to God three times and each time He asked God if it was possible for the responsibility to pass from Him, but if it was not possible, let God's will be done rather than His own will.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about modeling Jesus' obedience to do as God wanted Him to do rather than what He wanted to do. Jesus taught us what we call The Lord's Prayer, in which Jesus taught us to pray for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. Here we see Jesus modeling this obedience, not putting his own desires ahead of God's will. While the disciples were having a hard time staying awake while Jesus prayed Jesus told them that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. The same is true with us. But we can pray for Jesus to strengthen us when we are having difficulty doing God's will rather than our own. We can remember that Jesus has set us free from being slaves to our sin. We do not have to continue in our pattern of sinful behavior. But we can't do it alone. We need to stay in Jesus' love because, as we learned yesterday, no branch can do anything apart from Jesus, the true vine. We do not have the strength or ability to do this on our own. It is only through abiding in Jesus that we will have the ability to be strong in Him and be able to choose God's will in our lives over doing our own will, the same way that Jesus was able to because He remained in God's love.

Introduction to Day by Day Kids Bible

00:00:02
Speaker
Hello everybody! Today is October 1st. I'm Robin, I'm with In the Family Way Coaching, and together we are here for our daily Bible reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:16
Speaker
If this is just popping up on that YouTube feed, don't think this is just for kids. This is just an easily understandable Bible. It is written in storybook version in chronological order, but it includes most of the details.
00:00:31
Speaker
It gives us a very good picture of the big picture that God has for us in the entire Bible, all the way from Genesis through Revelation. That's right. This Bible even includes the book of Revelation.
00:00:46
Speaker
So we are able to understand God's word, which is very important because it doesn't do us any good to just read God's word if we really don't understand it.

Interactive Reading Calendar

00:00:56
Speaker
This helps to open up our eyes and our ears so that when we go to look at the big Bible, we have greater understanding of what we're reading when we go to check out those finer details.
00:01:07
Speaker
So if you are following along because you've been here for a while, have been faithful and have printed out the calendar for the month of October. i just got that done today.
00:01:18
Speaker
And I even got my sticker on there for the first day. And if you have your calendar, it's ready for download there on the site under the heading of Read the Bible in One Year. And whatever you're using, get that crayon or that sticker out because we are about to hear the Bible today.
00:01:36
Speaker
For you guys, ah Julie, Forrest, Jedi, Pearl, and Diamond, I totally forgot about making the calendar ahead of time and getting you guys your calendar.
00:01:48
Speaker
So I do have that if you want to head over this weekend or if you're up in my area up the hill this week. Let me know and I'll stick it on the porch for you in case I'm not home.

Understanding the Year as Fractions

00:02:00
Speaker
All right. Well, thank you very much for being here. i hope that you are enjoying our Bible reading. One thing I have not been doing at the end of each of our months is that I forgot to give you guys our fraction.
00:02:13
Speaker
We have kids watching and we have one particular family in general that I usually do the fraction of the months for. And I don't know if you've been missing that, but ah I'm going to go ahead and do our fraction. We just finished the month of September.
00:02:29
Speaker
And how many months? This is probably, I know Pearl, you can do this. So maybe Jedi? I don't know. It might be a little much for you, but are you there as well, Forrest? that How many months do we have in the year?
00:02:41
Speaker
Diamond, do you know how many months we have in the year? We have 12. And September, do you know what number the month of September is?
00:02:55
Speaker
Nine, very good, I gave you time to count it. ah hope that was enough time. And so we have finished how many months? Nine months out of how many months total?
00:03:08
Speaker
12. So we would put the nine on top of the fraction. We call that the numerator and we put the 12 on the bottom. That's our denominator.
00:03:22
Speaker
And then we have nine twelfths. But because nine and 12, they both have a number that can be divided into them. You know what number we can count by to to get both nine and 12?
00:03:35
Speaker
Do you think, besides one, is it twos? Can we count by twos and get to nine? Nope. Can we count by twos and get to 12? Yep.
00:03:45
Speaker
But because we can't do both, we're not going to be able to use the number two. So what about the number three? Can we count by threes and get to nine?
00:03:56
Speaker
Yep, three, six, nine. So how many threes was that? Three. So our top number is now going to be a number three.
00:04:08
Speaker
And how many times do we count by three to get to 12? Diamond, can you count by threes yet? Three, six, nine,
00:04:19
Speaker
twelve So we're gonna put the three on the top and the four on the bottom, and that's our fraction. And now we are three fourths of the way through the year.
00:04:33
Speaker
We have only one fourth of the way done.

The Garden of Gethsemane

00:04:36
Speaker
like We have one fourth of the way left to go because we have all of October, November, and December, another three.
00:04:45
Speaker
We are almost done with the year. We are three-fourths of the way. You guys are doing amazing. Are you loving reading the Bible this year? At the end of this year, you guys are going to be able to say that you know what's going on in the entire Bible.
00:05:00
Speaker
That is amazing.
00:05:04
Speaker
Well, let's go ahead and head into our reading today. For those of you who didn't need the fraction, thank you for following along.
00:05:11
Speaker
This event is very important to me, especially for being a family event. I was hoping that we would have ah multiple families. I don't know all of you watching. it's It might be mostly adults, but we do have, at least I know my my favorite family listening along. So I like to incorporate you guys there.
00:05:33
Speaker
All right. So today's first section of our reading is entitled Praying in the Garden. So yesterday we left off and Jesus was telling us that the world doesn't know us, but he knows us.
00:05:48
Speaker
And I've told them about you. I will keep showing. Oh, he's praying to God, saying the world doesn't know God, but Jesus knows God. And I've told them, meaning the people, about you being God.
00:06:02
Speaker
And Jesus says that he will keep showing God to us. And that way, your love for me can be in them too. And then I can be in them too.
00:06:13
Speaker
So Jesus has just finished praying. And then Jesus and his friends crossed the valley. There was an olive garden on the other side. And that is where they went.
00:06:25
Speaker
The garden was called Gethsemane. Sit here, said Jesus. I'm going to go pray. So Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him.
00:06:37
Speaker
Stay here and watch, he told them. Jesus was beginning to feel very sad. He walked just a little way from Peter, James, and John.
00:06:49
Speaker
It was close enough to throw a stone. Jesus got down on his knees and he started praying. Father, If you will, don't let this happen, he said, but do whatever you think is best.
00:07:06
Speaker
I want to do what you want.
00:07:10
Speaker
Then an angel came down from heaven and he helped Jesus to be strong. Jesus was so sad. He prayed even harder and his sweat fell on the ground in big drops.
00:07:28
Speaker
Jesus got up and he went back to his friends. They were sleeping. They were tired because they were so sad. Couldn't you men watch for just one hour?
00:07:40
Speaker
Jesus asked Peter. Watch and pray so you won't think about doing wrong. We call that being led into temptation.
00:07:52
Speaker
Jesus went to pray again. Father, he said, do whatever you think is best. I want to do what you want.
00:08:04
Speaker
Jesus walked back to Peter, James, and John. They were sleeping again. So he walked back to pray a third time, and he told God the same thing he had said before.
00:08:19
Speaker
Then he came back to his friends. Are you still sleeping? He asked them. It's almost time and I'm about to be given to sinful people. Get up, let's Here comes the one who is showing them where I am.
00:08:37
Speaker
Judas knew where Jesus was. Jesus and his friends often went to the Olive Garden. So Judas led guards and officers from the worship house to the garden.
00:08:51
Speaker
It was dark and they held lamps and sticks with fire on the end called torches. Judas had made a plan with the worship house leaders.
00:09:02
Speaker
He would show them which man was Jesus. He had told them, the man I kiss will be Jesus. Have the guards take him away.
00:09:15
Speaker
So now Judas walked up to Jesus to kiss him. And Jesus said, Judas, are you going to turn against me by kissing me? Judas said, teacher.
00:09:28
Speaker
And then he kissed Jesus.
00:09:32
Speaker
Jesus knew what was going to happen to him. So he asked, who are you looking for? we are looking for Jesus, they said. I am Jesus, Jesus said.
00:09:46
Speaker
Everyone stepped back. Some even fell to the ground. Who are you looking for? Jesus asked again. We're looking for Jesus, they said.
00:09:59
Speaker
I told you, said Jesus. I am Jesus. I am the one you were looking for. Let these other men go. Then the guards took hold of Jesus.
00:10:12
Speaker
Jesus' friends saw what was happening. "'Lord, should we fight with our swords?' they asked him. Peter had a sword, so he pulled it out. He swung it at Malchus, the high priest's servant.
00:10:25
Speaker
And Peter cut off the servant's right ear. Put your sword back, said Jesus. People who fight with the swords by die by the swords.
00:10:37
Speaker
Don't you know? could call out to my father and then thousands of angels would come and they would do anything I asked. But this is what is supposed to happen.
00:10:50
Speaker
So no more fighting.
00:10:53
Speaker
Then Jesus touched Malchus's ear and Malchus was well again.
00:11:04
Speaker
Jesus talked to the officers and the guards. Am I leading people against you? You've come after me with swords and clubs. I was at the worship house every day.
00:11:16
Speaker
You didn't even touch me. Of course, you do your work after dark. Then the guards and officers took Jesus and they also held on to a young man.
00:11:29
Speaker
He had been with Jesus. The young man was wearing just a cloth around him, but he ran away and he left his cloth behind. So he ran away with no clothes on.
00:11:42
Speaker
And all of Jesus's other friends ran away too.

Significance of Jesus' Sacrifice

00:11:48
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:11:55
Speaker
Oh, it's getting tense, isn't it? Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen. And he was becoming nervous. But he did not let that stop him from doing God's will.
00:12:09
Speaker
Our daily application today is to look at how hard of a job Jesus had to do. Jesus knew that he wasn't just laying his life down for his friends.
00:12:20
Speaker
He was deliberately going to die and then rise again, but he still had to go through the physical pain of the death in order to atone, save, save us from all of our sins.
00:12:32
Speaker
Today at sunset marks the beginning of the day of atonement. And so Jesus came for this day. This is the day that once a year, God would forgive the people of their sins.
00:12:48
Speaker
And Jesus came to pay that price all at once. He paid all of it so we never have to sacrifice or be in our sin again.
00:13:00
Speaker
Whenever we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive us because Jesus did the Father's will. We need to remember Jesus' faithfulness and remember that he was also a man.
00:13:16
Speaker
He was part of God and he was also part of man. So he could have chosen not to go forward. He could have chosen to disobey, but he knew that the right thing to do was to go through this so that he could make the atonement for you personally, for me personally,
00:13:38
Speaker
for everybody in the and entire world who was living and would yet live. He atoned for everybody's sins. He was not wanting to have to go through it if he didn't have to.
00:13:54
Speaker
But he did have to. And he stayed with it. He prayed three times. God, if you are willing, in our big Bible, it even says, all things are possible with you, God.
00:14:07
Speaker
If it is possible, take this away from me. But yet not as I will, but as your will be done. Jesus taught us the Lord's Prayer. That's what we call it. He said, this is how you should pray, that we should pray for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. And Jesus demonstrated this by choosing to go to the cross in order to pay for our sins.
00:14:34
Speaker
There is nothing that we could do that could be as difficult to go through as what he knew he was going to endure up there on that cross. He

Living by Jesus' Teachings

00:14:44
Speaker
knew how he was going to die.
00:14:46
Speaker
he knew why he was going to die. And he said that he did so because of his great love for us.
00:14:54
Speaker
We've been learning that if we obey Jesus, that is how we show our love for him. We can show respect and love for the decision that Jesus made to go through with that death, knowing that he would come back to life by choosing to obey him, by choosing to do all the things that he commanded us to do, because those are how we show it.
00:15:18
Speaker
And we show how great God is. It's hard. Jesus told the disciples in our big Bible while they were sleeping and trying to stay awake and youre just falling asleep.
00:15:31
Speaker
He said, the the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. And that is true with us as well. But we can pray for strength. And we know that when we are weak, God is strong.
00:15:45
Speaker
So whenever we face difficult things, whether we're choosing to do the right thing about even just small thing, or whether it's big, it could be getting along with one another. It could be choosing not to watch something or listen to something.
00:15:59
Speaker
It could be choosing not to speak to somebody in such a fashion, because we know that to speak in a certain way is not right. It is unkind. It is not honoring to God.
00:16:11
Speaker
is not loving. It is not treating people the way that God wants us to treat one another. Whatever it is that we are facing, we can go to Jesus and ask him to help us to be strong, to do the right thing, so that we don't do what we want, but remember to do as God wants us to do.
00:16:32
Speaker
I want to invite you also to watch the Messianic Jewish Congregations ah service tonight at 7 p.m. Pacific time in order to begin our 24 hour celebration for the Day of Atonement.
00:16:47
Speaker
I will have the link in our description below. And it will be available there as well. If you don't catch it at seven, if you catch it at some up later time, all of the sermons are are kept online.
00:16:59
Speaker
So I have the link in the description below so that you will be able to watch that. And I hope that you do. hope that you enjoy taking part in celebrating this day of atonement for which our Savior paid the price for us so that we never have to be without forgiveness when we request it again.
00:17:17
Speaker
We don't have to wait an entire year to receive atonement for our sins. Anytime we sin, we can take that to God and confess that sin. God is so faithful to forgive us of our sins.
00:17:31
Speaker
But Jesus has set us free from our sins. We do not have to remain in a sinful nature. We can choose to have a different pattern of behavior.
00:17:41
Speaker
And that's what it means to be a slave to sin is when we repeat the same patterns over and over again, saying, well, that's just the way I am. We don't need to be just the way we are.
00:17:54
Speaker
We need to remember that transformation in the mind is what stops the sin.

Invitation to Messianic Jewish Service

00:17:59
Speaker
And we can choose to do better, not on our own strength, but by remaining in Jesus's love.
00:18:06
Speaker
We can't do it on our own. We have to do what Jesus taught us yesterday and remain in his love. No branch can survive on its own. And we are all branches, a part of his vine.
00:18:19
Speaker
And so we don't want to try to separate from him thinking that we have our own strength and our own power to do this. It is only by remaining in his love and by obeying him, but we will have the strength with the Holy Spirit to be able to change and to not be a slave to our sin any longer.
00:18:37
Speaker
For if the son has set us free, we are free indeed, but we have to stay in his love in order to be able to continue in that.
00:18:51
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today, that you are feeling motivated and dedicated to being this new creation in Jesus that we are, that begins with the transformation of our mind, knowing that we are set free from our sin and that our sins have been paid for with his atoning blood.
00:19:11
Speaker
If you are ah wondering what to do to light that light, we can do that by clicking that thumbs up. It looks like a thumbs up, but it's really our light button. There might be a heart there.
00:19:22
Speaker
We can also share it. There are links next to the button for share where you can share it to social media. You can send the link to somebody via email. This is important stuff that we want to share the word.
00:19:35
Speaker
We want to spread the word about reading God's word. And this is all part of God's great big plan for us to understand and read his word so that we may know that we are saved because Jesus came to save us from our sins.
00:19:51
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today. Remember to try and catch that service tonight or tomorrow, whatever day you end up watching or listening to this event. ah Do be sure maybe just if you're already past the seven o'clock Pacific time, then head on down to the description and click it right away so you are in the mood for it and you don't forget and you just keep the good stuff coming.

Closing and Invitation for Next Reading

00:20:12
Speaker
and I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you get around to watching or listening.
00:20:17
Speaker
And I will be here for everyone again for tomorrow's daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley. See you then.
