Today's we will be reading the Paul's letter to the Galatians Chapters 2-4.

Today Paul will give us a very in depth understanding of how we are not set free by the Law, but rather held in servitude to it, vs being completely set free from our sins by believing in Jesus. Paul explains to us today that now we are children of God, through the Promise God made!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of understanding the freedom we have from our sins through believing in Jesus and being able to explain this freedom to our Jewish brothers and sisters who are still living in their sin trying to follow the Law, which no one can follow 100%, except for Jesus!

Introduction to Daily Bible Reading

00:00:02
Speaker
Welcome back everybody. Today is October 22nd. My name is Robin. I'm within the Family Way Coaching and together we are here for our daily Bible reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:16
Speaker
If this event is just popping up on your feed somewhere and you are ah not familiar with it, stay around, stick around. You may find that you enjoy it. It is not just for kids.
00:00:28
Speaker
This is for everybody. It's just that this has been written at a level where we can easily understand it. But it is God's Bible and it is not a baby watered down version.
00:00:40
Speaker
This is simply a condensed version of the entire Bible written in chronological order to give us God's big story, and we're doing it all in one year. So some of us have been here for a while.
00:00:52
Speaker
We've been doing this all year, and I hope that you will join me for whatever amount of the year ah for the rest of this year.

Using the Motivational Commitment Calendar

00:01:00
Speaker
So if you are using the motivational commitment calendar to bookmark your days, go ahead and get that out and get that sticker ready, because we are going to hear the Bible today.
00:01:14
Speaker
Today we are going to be picking up in the book of Galatians, which is a letter actually from Paul written to the Galatians. And he wrote this letter when he was living in Antioch.
00:01:26
Speaker
And we are going to be reading some more today about how the people in Galatia were having difficulty because they were being told some quote good news that was not so good they were being told that they needed to be more jewish they needed to be circumcised and they needed to be following the law Now, the law, if you are just coming into this, we are talking about laws for like atonement and ah for sin offerings and for guilt to offerings, and things of that. We are not talking about, say, the Ten Commandments.
00:02:06
Speaker
We are talking about things that specifically deal with redemption. And the the problem is, is that the nobody was made righteous by following the law.
00:02:19
Speaker
God had a lot of rules, more than just the Ten Commandments. And most of them were dealing with the ah the proper way to handle atonements and sacrifices and the different grain offerings and such like that.
00:02:36
Speaker
And then there were other rules about um
00:02:42
Speaker
uh,
00:02:47
Speaker
rules that were written by the rabbis. We call those the rabbinical laws. So we found when we were reading when Jesus was teaching that he said that the rabbis had made so many rules about washing hands, about doing this, about doing that, that there was it was very difficult for the people to even follow the rules.
00:03:10
Speaker
And the fact was is that nobody could completely follow all of the rules and once a year there would be the day of atonement but all throughout the year the people were expected to bring their sin or guilt offerings and for different things that they had done and so these were the types of things that we were talking about we are not talking about rules like don't steal because those were very common uh those were just the those were the ten commandment rules so
00:03:42
Speaker
We are talking about all of the Torah.

Grace vs. Law in Galatians

00:03:45
Speaker
Now, Jesus told us that he came to not abolish the law, but to fulfill it. And so we're but that can be a little bit confusing.
00:03:54
Speaker
So we're going to be reading some more from Paul, who is going to be explaining to us today ah the difference between following the law and and why that's that wasn't some of the way that we were meant to be saved.
00:04:09
Speaker
The law prepared us for receiving Jesus. we are Most of us here are Gentiles, so it didn't even apply to us. So we have the Jewish people who are trying to force the following of the law onto the Gentile people.
00:04:25
Speaker
And so they were creating a situation of bondage, of servitude. And that is what god or if that is what Paul is going to be explaining to us today. Jesus tells us that he came to set us free.
00:04:40
Speaker
And so this is what we are going to be ah seeing today is how Jesus set us free from our sins. And Jesus told us that if the son has set us free, we are free indeed.
00:04:53
Speaker
Nobody was free from their sin under the law because nobody could completely perfectly follow the law. Nobody could only Jesus did.
00:05:05
Speaker
And so he was our perfect sinless atonement for our sins. So let's head into it today. Our first section is entitled The Law and the Good News.
00:05:17
Speaker
And this is Galatians chapter 2.
00:05:21
Speaker
Now, Paul is continuing. this This is a continuous letter. So we left off yesterday where Paul was explaining in his letter that he had traveled and he had gone by. he had met Peter.
00:05:33
Speaker
He said he wanted to get to know Peter. So he went to Jerusalem and he stayed with Peter for 15 days. And then he traveled and he met many of Jesus's followers. And then he said that people noticed that he this was the man who used to hurt the Jewish, ah the Jesus followers. so He said he is teaching about Jesus now.
00:05:54
Speaker
And it says that they thanked God because of him. That doesn't mean that they were thanking God for Paul. They were thanking God for his conversion. And that he was now doing good instead of doing wrong.
00:06:09
Speaker
He thought he was doing good, but he was wrong. And Jesus showed him that.
00:06:15
Speaker
So now after 14 years, God told me to go to Jerusalem again. And this time I went with Barnabas and Titus. I went because God told me to.
00:06:27
Speaker
I quietly talked to Jesus' close friends and I told them what I was teaching people who are not Jewish. I told only the leaders of Jesus' followers because I was afraid people might get upset.
00:06:43
Speaker
Now Titus was with me, and he was not Jewish. And that was a problem to some people. They came into our group to spy on us, and they wanted us to be like Jews.
00:06:57
Speaker
So we see that this is going on for a number of years. Paul is explaining that this has gone on for quite some time.

Paul's Mission to Teach Gentiles

00:07:05
Speaker
was sent ah Titus was with me, and Peter was sent to teach Jews about Jesus.
00:07:12
Speaker
I was sent to teach people who are not Jewish, and God was with Peter's work, and God was with my work. People said that James, Peter, and John were strong men of God, and these men saw that God's kind love was with me too.
00:07:31
Speaker
So they welcomed both Barnabas and me They told us to keep teaching people who are not Jewish, and they would keep on teaching the Jews. They only asked us to do one thing.
00:07:45
Speaker
They asked us to keep helping poor people, and that's just what I wanted to do. Then Peter came to Antioch, and I had come back here too.
00:07:57
Speaker
Peter sometimes ate with people who were not Jewish, and then some Jews came to see Peter. And Peter was afraid of what they would think. So he stopped eating with people who were not Jewish.
00:08:11
Speaker
Hmm. And that's not what the good news was all about. So I talked to Peter in front of everyone. You are Jewish, I said.
00:08:23
Speaker
But you do not do everything that Jews once did. why do you expect people who are not Jewish to do that? We were born Jews and we followed God's law.
00:08:38
Speaker
We know that following the law does not take away sins. Sins are taken away by believing in Jesus. Now it's just as if we'd never sinned.
00:08:52
Speaker
And it's not because we keep laws. It's because we believe in Jesus. What if we still sin? Does that mean Jesus makes us sin?
00:09:03
Speaker
Not at all. I let my sins die with Jesus. So it's not me living by myself anymore. Instead, Jesus lives in me.
00:09:18
Speaker
And I live by believing in God's Son. He loved me and he died for me. What if I could be made right with God by following the law? ah Well, then Jesus died for nothing.
00:09:34
Speaker
And I don't treat God's kind love as nothing.
00:09:41
Speaker
I want to know one thing from you people in Galatia. Did you get God's spirit by following the law? no It was by believing what you heard about Jesus.
00:09:56
Speaker
You begin with the Spirit's help. Now you are trying to live for God by yourself? Why does God give you His Spirit? Why does He work wonders?
00:10:07
Speaker
Is it because you keep the law? No, it's because you believe what you heard.

Faith and Alignment with God

00:10:16
Speaker
Think about Abraham, for instance.
00:10:19
Speaker
He believed God, and that made him right as God sees it. Try to understand this. People who believe in God belong to Abraham's family.
00:10:33
Speaker
God's word said that God would save people who are not Jewish. He saves them because they believe in him. And that is good news.
00:10:46
Speaker
It is clear. Nobody is made right with God by the law. The prophet Habakkuk wrote, people who are right with God live by believing in him.
00:11:02
Speaker
The law has nothing to do with believing.
00:11:06
Speaker
What if you choose to live by the law? ah Well, then you have to keep it up. Because if you don't, then you've sinned. And then you'll get in trouble. But Jesus kept us from getting in trouble.
00:11:22
Speaker
He got in trouble for us when he died on the cross. He saved us. Now everyone can believe in Jesus and we can trust in God and get the spirit he promised.
00:11:37
Speaker
So what good was the law? God made the law because people sinned. But then Jesus came. The law was in charge of us at one time.
00:11:50
Speaker
It led to Jesus. Now the law is not in charge anymore. God is.
00:11:59
Speaker
You are all God's children, and that is because you believe in Jesus. You were baptized into Jesus, soaked in him, covered with him.
00:12:12
Speaker
Being Jewish or not Jewish just doesn't matter. Being a slave or being free doesn't matter. Being a man or a woman doesn't matter. Everyone is together in Jesus.
00:12:29
Speaker
Think about what I am saying. What happens when a son is a little boy? He might own the whole house, but he's no different than a servant because he still has to obey the people in charge.
00:12:42
Speaker
He obeys until his father says he can have the house. We were like servants. We followed the world's way. But at the right time, God sent us his son.
00:12:57
Speaker
and he came to save God's people. Now it's like we are children. We can get everything a son should get. So God sent his son's spirit into our hearts.
00:13:13
Speaker
His son's spirit calls, Daddy! Father!
00:13:20
Speaker
When you did not know God, you were servants. But now you know God. And better than that, God knows you. So why are you going back to the law?
00:13:34
Speaker
It's not strong. It can't make you happy. you want to follow it again? I was with you the first time because I was sick.
00:13:46
Speaker
And that's when I told you about the good news. it My sickness was hard on you, but you did not treat me badly. You did not laugh at me.
00:13:58
Speaker
Instead, you welcomed me and you treated me as if I were God's angel. You treated me as if I were Jesus. What happened to your joy?
00:14:12
Speaker
You would have given me your own eyes if you could have. Am I your enemy now for telling you the truth? Those who want to change the good news are trying hard to win you.
00:14:24
Speaker
They want you on their side, but it's no good. They want to make us enemies. They want you to work hard for them. It's fine to work hard, but it should be for a good reason.
00:14:41
Speaker
I wish I could be with you now, and I wish I didn't have to say these things. I don't know what to do with you. Some of want to follow the law.
00:14:54
Speaker
Don't you know what the law tells you? It says in God's word that Abraham had two sons. One was the son of Sarah's servant, and he was born like all other children.
00:15:08
Speaker
The other son was Sarah's boy. Sarah was not a servant. She was free. God promised that she would have a son.
00:15:23
Speaker
And so he was born because of God's promise. And it's like that with God and his people too. The servant mother is like the law.
00:15:36
Speaker
And this the people who follow the law all their lives are its servants. But you, you are like Sarah's sons.
00:15:48
Speaker
You are God's children because of God's promise.
00:15:56
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Paul's Transformation and the Power of Belief

00:16:01
Speaker
Wasn't that an awesome reading today? Paul is very eloquent. You see, Paul was a Bible scholar. He was a Torah scholar.
00:16:12
Speaker
He was a Jew among Jews. He was he was the best of the best. Our big Bible version says that he was advancing beyond other people his own age.
00:16:23
Speaker
He really knew his Bible. He was a Bible scholar. And so he was very familiar with the law and he wanted everybody to follow the law.
00:16:36
Speaker
And he was just like what Jesus had said, where Jesus said that there will come a time when people who kill you think they are doing God a great service. And that's what Paul thought he was doing.
00:16:48
Speaker
But when we talked about before that God took Paul's passion, his zeal for God and showed him how to use it correctly. He opened his eyes, literally and figuratively, and helped him to see how Jesus had fulfilled the scriptures.
00:17:09
Speaker
And so Paul knew what it was to follow every bit of the law and to yet not be able to follow every bit of the law, knowing that it was too hard and nobody could be perfect.
00:17:23
Speaker
Like Jesus said, he who was without sin, let them cast the first stone. Everybody is with sin. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
00:17:36
Speaker
God is very holy. So the purpose of a lot of the laws, if you look at the book of Leviticus, is to keep the people... to try to keep the people in in a holy state because they needed to be separate. He said, I am holy, so you need to also be holy.
00:17:54
Speaker
God wanted to set his people apart. And so he created these laws. And the problem was, is that he created them in order to give them a way to be cleansed.
00:18:08
Speaker
But they had to constantly go in for cleansing. The cleansing required blood. Now, even the first covenant with Abraham was a covenant of blood. It was a covenant of circumcision.
00:18:20
Speaker
So even that was had to do with blood. So they had to also keep the covenant of circumcision in order to be part of Abraham's covenant.
00:18:34
Speaker
But then Jesus came and he freed us from all of that. And so we don't want to backtrack. And that's what we were seeing the people doing.
00:18:45
Speaker
This is helpful for us to understand today because we still have Jewish brothers and sisters who are trying to live under the law. And if you listen to the um Day of Atonement ah service that we had at my Messianic Jewish congregation,
00:19:05
Speaker
um My rabbi there explains that even today, because there is no temple, there can be no atoning sacrifices.
00:19:16
Speaker
And so they have all of these justifications as to what it is that will try and cleanse them from their sins. But the fact is, is that they simply are not true.
00:19:28
Speaker
Nothing is cleansing them from their sins. There is only one who can cleanse us from our sins. And that is simply by believing in Jesus. Because he cleansed us from our sins.
00:19:41
Speaker
And like Paul said today, as though we never sinned. And so therefore we are now worthy to have God in us with his spirit.
00:19:52
Speaker
Because we are now clean.
00:19:58
Speaker
So there's no reason for us to be following the the the ritual atonements for sacrifice, for guilt and sin offerings. And Jesus summed up the whole of the Torah we talked about yesterday in saying that we need to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, with all of our soul, with all of our might.
00:20:21
Speaker
We need to make God the most important one in our lives. We've been learning about that all year this year, haven't we? And also, of course, now to love Jesus. And the one who loves the the son loves the father.
00:20:35
Speaker
And then we are also to love one another. That's the law that we live under now. We believe. And now our law is to love.
00:20:47
Speaker
It's very simple. So we don't need to have a lot of, mean, there are still basic rules, you know, like we, like I said, we have like the 10 commandments and things like that, but we're not made clean by following the laws.
00:21:02
Speaker
Even when we sin and we break those laws, God is still faithful to forgive us. We don't have to go and offer a sacrifice or anything. And even if we were really super good at trying to follow all the rules we could, we're never going to be perfect.
00:21:19
Speaker
But we do try to do our best knowing that we are trying to do what is right, not because doing so will free us and make us right with God.
00:21:33
Speaker
We are trying to do the right thing by living the way God wants us to live. But following the rules is not what cleanses us from our sins. Believing in Jesus is what cleanses us from our sins.
00:21:47
Speaker
So I love Paul's explanation of that today. And we will have a little bit more of Paul talking about that in tomorrow when when we complete his Galatians letter with chapters five and six
00:22:02
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light. It was it wonderful to hear those explanations of how we are set free. It's very good for us to understand these things so that if we are speaking to one of our Jewish brethren, that we can share our light with them, to share how Jesus fulfilled the law so that they don't have to be worried about their sins.
00:22:27
Speaker
because they're still living in a state of unforgiveness. We want to be able to have understanding, like what Paul gave us today, so that we can share that good news with those who might not otherwise understand and might think that they are still living under the old covenant.

Sharing the Message of Freedom

00:22:45
Speaker
So that's our daily application today so that we may be good witnesses to understand and to be able to share that good news and also to understand that we are children of God now.
00:22:59
Speaker
We have been grafted in. Isn't that awesome? That is so good. and love it. Well, thank you so much for joining me. i know that God has lit my light today. Just reading these books today, these these chapters, they were so exciting, weren't they?
00:23:16
Speaker
I know i've I found them very moving, very exciting. And I hope that you did too. So kindly click your light button when you are completely done listening or watching today, because doing so helps us spread the word about reading God's word.
00:23:32
Speaker
And when, as we read God's word, we come to greater understanding of his big picture for us so that we understand and give are able to give the reason for the hope that is in us.
00:23:43
Speaker
And all of God's word is useful for teaching and for correction. and it's just, it prepares us for all the good works that God has prepared for us to do.
00:23:55
Speaker
He is setting us up to be ready to do and whatever good work he gives us to do. and I'm always excited about that. I don't know what all he's going to give me. I hope you're excited. What is he going to give you next?
00:24:10
Speaker
So I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you get around to listening or watching today's daily reading here for the October 22nd daily reading. And i will be here again tomorrow.
00:24:22
Speaker
So I hope you will join me tomorrow for the daily reading out of our day by day kids Bible written by Karen Henley. And until we meet again, i hope you have a very blessed day.
00:24:32
Speaker
See you next time.
