Introduction and Light-hearted Banter
00:00:21
Speaker
Welcome back to daycare Ditto's we Are always asking the hard-hitting questions and I want to ask you guys What is your?
00:00:35
Speaker
Waba fetish. So I got to say there was one time in my notes where I accidentally typed Waba feet. Oh, yeah, it's a good one. Yeah, feet are always good. I'm into powerful women with caked on lipstick. Yeah, that's it for me. I like it when they have a little knob hanging off their ass with eyes on it.
00:01:04
Speaker
You mean off the forehead? I love a long forehead. Yeah. Yeah. You got to ask yourself, like, why not? Well, to ask yourself. Wob buffet. You got to ask yourself and you might ask yourself, who is this beautiful Wob buffet?
Show and Host Introductions
00:01:28
Speaker
Welcome to daycare Diddos, where we are going through
00:01:34
Speaker
the entire Pokedex, one by one by one by one grouping them into little families and talking about them and telling you why we love them. We do love each and every Pokemon except for one in particular that each of us holds in our hearts that we don't like. And you know which one those are at this point. I am your Gen 2 host, Peter.
00:02:04
Speaker
very elegant. Don't repeat my words too often. Getting better every day. With me in randomized order, which I really have to go back and see how random this is, but my brain is a random number calculator and I'm here with Sarah.
00:02:25
Speaker
Oh, that's me. I'm reprimanding my cat right now who's trying to climb in my closet because why not? Yeah, sometimes you got to spank that chainsaw. Yeah, he's getting a spanking right now. Steven. Wowie zowie. And Dave. I did it. So we've been playing, we've been playing Wonder, it sounds like.
Nostalgia in Video Games
00:02:49
Speaker
Yeah, I've been playing with my boyfriend and, um, Dave, I don't know if you remember, but there's a Tim and Eric sketch. Oh, hunky. Um, and, uh, every time we beat a level, he'll always go oopy doopy.
00:03:07
Speaker
Yeah, they just say the dumbest shit. I love it. It's amazing. It's a lot of fun. I do enjoy it from what I've seen I really I don't really mess with Mario's anymore because Too happy for me. Give me that gritty
00:03:25
Speaker
post-apocalyptic first-person shooter where I get to make the hard choices. It looks delightful. My interest is piqued. Yeah, it gives me very Super Mario World vibes. Yeah.
00:03:44
Speaker
in how it's just kind of fun and random. And every once in a while you're like, oh, is that like a dinosaur? Why is there a dinosaur here? Anything that brings me back to like SMW or Super Mario World 3 or Super Mario 3, Bros. 3? That was my favorite game to play on the Game Boy, actually. Yeah, three. Yep, three. Yeah, it was a good one.
Meet Wobbuffet: The Blue Punching Bag
00:04:15
Speaker
And so without further ado, by request by a fan of the show, we're going to start off this week with Wobbuffet. Introduced in the Gen 2, Pokemon number 202, known as the patient Pokemon,
00:04:35
Speaker
He is four feet, three inches tall, 62.8 pounds. And what does this Pikachu look like? Honestly, a blue punching bag. That's it. Yeah. Got it in one. He's a punching bag that's happy to be punched.
00:05:00
Speaker
I don't know if he's happy to be punched. He's got a very happy face. Yeah. Is it? I think it looks happy. I think it kind of looks distressed in a silly way. Like a little disgruntled for sure. Like a side. Yeah, I guess not. I can see it now that I'm looking at it. It kind of looks like he just got punched in the gut and that's his face and his little tail with eyes is like, oh, shit, dude. Yeah, I was going to imagine. Look at look at Wobbuffet and imagine just yelling fuck.
00:05:30
Speaker
Yeah. Well, it looks like he just like dropped the hammer on his toe. If those weird little like balls at the bottom of his. He had I was going to say he has two scrotums. Yeah, I was also reminded of there's an enemy in Link's Awakening that is very strange and weird. It's a little I don't know, like a thin dildo looking thing and it walks around and if you hit it, you get shocked.
00:06:00
Speaker
Yeah. The little slime guys. Yeah. What are those googly eyes? I don't know, but it just reminded me of a Wobbuffet. I was like, Oh yeah. If you like attack it, it hits it back. Like it's just weird. It's walking around. It's a little punching bag type thing.
00:06:19
Speaker
I honestly, even in the Switch remake, it's just a green stick thing walking around. I really can't tell what it is. It's just, it's just itself. It's called a buzz blob. There you go. Knew it. Yeah. That was the next thing out of my mouth. It's a blob that buzzes. He transforms by sprinkling magic powder on him into cuke man.
00:06:50
Speaker
Yeah, Cuke Man has these like really weird eyes too. Yeah. But you can actually hit Cuke Man. You can kill him. Thank God. If I were a Cuke Man, I would long for death. Yeah, you could like bomb him. You could use the magic dust to light him on fire, right? Yeah, the the magic dust helped. All the normal stuff you do in real life. Yeah.
00:07:17
Speaker
Wobffet's, I mean, we mentioned the tail has like, it's got a pitch black tail, two little eyes on it. And then usually he's portrayed with one of his arms kind of up to his face.
00:07:37
Speaker
Yeah, and there's a reason for that. And to be honest, I want to like, for me, when I looked at Wobbuffet, I was always like, feel like I'm missing something. Yeah. I was like, I get
00:07:50
Speaker
the name, he wobbles. The second part comes from the verb buffet, which means like, you know, rough house. But I was like, I don't know, there's got to be something a little bit more to this.
00:08:12
Speaker
There totally is. So do we mind if we take a little detour real quick? Let's head. Let's head in. Let's do this. All right. So Wobbuffet touches its hand to its forehead. And that is a reference to a Japanese comedian, Sanpai Hayashia.
00:08:36
Speaker
who was famous for repeatedly touching his hand to his forehead, while saying one of his trademark lines, Sonansu Okusan. And so, while a fetch Japanese name is Sonans. I'm going to post a picture real quick of the pose, the
00:09:00
Speaker
hand to the forehead. Now like Wobbuffet kind of does like a salute almost. This guy, it's more like a, he's like scratching his forehead kind of like thing. But yeah, the catchphrase, Sonansu Okusan, means that's the way it is ma'am. I love that. So Wobbuffet's name literally means that's the way it is.
00:09:26
Speaker
I love it. I do love that. It gives me some strong Greg from Over the Garden Wall Energy. Ain't that just the way? Ain't that just the way? That's literally exactly what it is. Also, it's like Wobbuff, it's the patient Pokemon. That's just the way it is. Be patient, just persevere.
Wobbuffet's Competitive Role
00:09:47
Speaker
If you get hit, just knock them back type thing.
00:09:53
Speaker
So, yeah, I was like, oh, you know, there's got to be something a little bit more to Wobbuffet that I'm just not. He can't just be a wobbling punching bag. Right. He is very docile and will never attack first, which is kind of cool when you think about what if it goes up against another Wobbuffet.
00:10:14
Speaker
So do you know about this? I did. It was not. Yeah. So it was a segue, but go ahead. No, you go ahead. It's such, it's so good. No, no, go ahead. Go ahead. You will explain it much better than me. So
00:10:28
Speaker
There's actually a lot of interesting stuff we will talk about with Wobbuffet in competitive play. But one of the things is that if you have two Wobbuffets with leftovers and they're facing each other, they'll basically never be able to take each other out because they won't be able to counter. They won't be able to mirror coat. They won't be able to even struggle because they'll just recover from leftovers. And so it'll just never end.
00:10:56
Speaker
So the reason for this is while effect doesn't have any attacking moves it never has it never will so all of its attacks count on the enemy doing damage to you or Like safeguard protecting your side of the field or destiny bonds taking your opponent out with you Things of that nature so no attacking moves it also has a ability called shadow tag
00:11:25
Speaker
And shadow tag prevents you from using the switch command. Like you just can't switch out another Pokemon. So two Wobbifets have each other cornered. So the only thing left to do is to eliminate all the PP out of your moves. And struggle. And struggle is a move that does damage based off your attack stat. It's a typeless move. So,
00:11:53
Speaker
It doesn't get resisted by anything and a quarter of the attack damage you do is recoiled back to you. But you'll never do enough damage with struggle off of a Wobbuffet to do more damage than a leftover could heal.
00:12:14
Speaker
barring some astronomical luck where you just get critical hits every time every single time so it's basically a soft luck it's yeah so it would be an endless so if you had this combination in gen three if you have two wobbufets facing each other both with leftovers who have their of course they're going to have the shadow tag
00:12:37
Speaker
got all of their pp down, you struggle, they will never ever ever die. So it like kind of breaks your game in a way, because it is an endless battle. But they did, they did change this in generation four, because- They banned Wob effect from using leftovers competitively.
00:13:02
Speaker
Yeah. And then also too, so Shadow Tag was kind of Wobbuffet's signature ability. When they introduced abilities, Wobbuffet was the only one who had Shadow Tag. Then when they introduced Guffet is the name of the Pokemon. She also had Shadow Tag. And so that kind of changed things up a little bit.
00:13:26
Speaker
Peter, did you watch the false swipe gaming video on Wobbuffet? Yeah, and I knew this. I knew that shadow tag as a actual ability ended up being banned in the end too. Yeah, but what was so interesting was like the fact that Wobbuffet and why not were then just banned from like a higher category and had to fight amongst the Ubers. Yeah, crazy.
00:13:52
Speaker
They ended up just in the Uber category. So they were banned to Ubers, and then later on we'll talk about The Little Guy. He was both used in Ubers and in The Little Cup, and no in between. So he was usable at the highest end of competitive play, where gods exist, and level five Chimchars. Yeah.
00:14:20
Speaker
But but now it's in the PU category, which I had to look it up. It's apparently stands for perfectly useless. Like it's just Pokemon who because of their abilities or whatever are just cannot be used. And so they're just useless.
00:14:40
Speaker
Any in competitive play, I think at this point, Arena Trap, which was used for like Diglett and Dugtrio. I was going to say Dugtrio made them usable. Yeah, that was banned. I think Magnet Pull also got banned. I'm not 100% on that. Anything that prevents your opponent from switching and allows you a quick like revenge kill has been banned in competitive play.
00:15:10
Speaker
And Dave, I thought you would find this interesting. Wobbuffet's biggest counter nowadays is Mega Sableye. Ooh. Do you know why? Can it not?
00:15:24
Speaker
get hit by it. Yeah. Yeah, because that's the thing. Savalai, when it first came out, was just such a unique type that it just kind of skirted through without real. It's a ghost dark type. Yeah. And Wobbuffet can't damage a ghost or a dark type.
00:15:44
Speaker
Counter is a fighting type move, so it won't hit Ghost. And then Mirror Coat is a Psychic type, so it won't hit Dark. So you've got Mega Sableye, you've got Sableye, you've got Spiritune. So maybe real quick we should explain kind of how the Counter Mirror Coat, how Wobbuffet works.
00:16:07
Speaker
Yeah, it kind of confused me until I saw it being used and I was like, oh, okay I can see why it fights up against like Mewtwo and like Rayquaza Yes, so while the Fett's base stats we know about base stats because I've told you mine Are distributed in a way that it has a very very
00:16:37
Speaker
Like not powerful special defense or defense, but a very high HP stat. So it takes a lot of damage. It's the highest HP stat of all psychic type Pokemon.
00:16:51
Speaker
Okay, so it will take a lot of damage from attacks, but counter and mirror coat are its bread and butter. And so if you get hit by a physical type move, if you hit the move counter, I believe you do twice the amount of damage as you received.
00:17:12
Speaker
and Miracote does the same thing for any special type move that is used against you. So that's sort of the Wobb effect and why not strategy in like it's in a nutshell. It'll hit you hard with a counter and then if it's going to die, it'll use a Destiny Bond.
00:17:36
Speaker
Yep. And then I also saw, um, Dave and Sarah, I believe you watched, um, a guy who will fight people who use legendary teams and take them out with like very basic Pokemon. It was kind of that same idea where they were just using a shiny female Wobbuffet to take out everybody. And what they did was their whole support team, uh, Jirachi, Gardevoir, Muna, they all had healing wish, which.
00:18:04
Speaker
Uh, get like basically the Pokemon feints, but then you bring another Pokemon back with full health. And so Wobbuffet just continued to counter or, you know, whatever and, and take the, the, them out. Um, it was, it was glorious to watch. So yeah, you could really like mold your team around Wobbuffet as like your star Pokemon. It's really interesting.
00:18:28
Speaker
Yeah. And you have to be careful too, because of course competitive players will switch out and set up on a wall with it.
00:18:39
Speaker
Yeah, I really like those type of Pokรฉmon. That's why like Shedinja is one of my favorites that kind of got like he got destroyed by the game kind of simplifying for people where it's like this is what's super effective because like it was such a weird thing. One of my joys of using Shedinja was people just trying to guess what their moves would do and try to like counter it, which was fun.
00:19:06
Speaker
But then he became invincible because of, well, with the new stat where if you can change his type, you can make him invincible. But it's these Pokemon where they simplify the Rock, Paper, Scissors game that it's based on and kind of turn it into a simpler but more like, it's like a game of chicken kind of.
00:19:33
Speaker
Yeah, it's like your move like and I really enjoy that because it adds Along with strategy it adds luck but also Like mind games into it. So I think I don't know it's it's always interesting when there's that kind of gimmick thrown in
00:19:50
Speaker
Yeah, Shed Ninj is interesting now because every once in a while, because of our pal Carl, who turned me on to watching, he turned me on and then he turned me on to watching Kaizo Iron Man, Iron Mon runs, which is basically just a
00:20:08
Speaker
to have a rom hack that had people will also use like a very specific rules for how to play the game too and they're basically it is you know if you faint you die you use one pokemon randomized pokemon
00:20:27
Speaker
through like you get to choose a Randomized starter and then you got to maybe make a main switch before you the first gym and like that's the Pokemon that you You use throughout the run and you have randomized moves and you just have to use that Pokemon throughout
00:20:46
Speaker
gambit of the entire game elite for all the gym leaders and One of the things because everything is randomized and every enemy is randomized. You always have to have a move That can take out shed ninja or you're fucked because you will come across a shed ninja and it will kill you if you can't kill it It's just a cool Pokemon, yeah, yeah you know why Wobbuff it's also a cool Pokemon and
00:21:15
Speaker
because it's got lips.
00:21:17
Speaker
That, too. Actually, yeah, it's it's one of the simplest and easiest gender differences in all Pokemon, them bright lippies.
The Creative Mind Behind Wobbuffet
00:21:30
Speaker
No, but I was going to say it's really awesome because it was designed by Hero Nobu Yoshida, who developed this is his full roster. Get ready for it. OK, let's see. We're going to rank him.
00:21:46
Speaker
So Wobbuffet, obviously. Banger. Dunsparce. Oh, banger. Celebi. Damn, go off, King. Rayquaza. Wow. Oh, shit. Deoxys. What? Magmortar. Oh, damn. Darkrai.
00:22:07
Speaker
Yeah, he's making some bank with those. He does not miss. No. He does not miss. That guy fucks. Not even once. Yeah, I looked at the list and I was like, this guy's my hero. Did he come up with the lip idea too? Yeah, he had to have. Dude, that guy fucks for sure. He showed up at the office one day just wearing lipstick and he was like, this is a genius. This is an experiment. This is a genius. I fucking did it again.
00:22:37
Speaker
So one of those things where he just like Like just slaps his like dick down onto the paper And they're like, is it really that easy? You're not even trying and then they look at the paper and it's a fucking outline of her quaza And they're like, whoa He's so fucking good and then he does it again in his wobbuffet with lips. Yeah Oh man, i'm bleeding
00:23:00
Speaker
Yeah. Oh my god. Yeah, it's a little pea hole blend. That's that joke. A little pea hole. Definitely the most obvious gender difference of any Pokemon. Not saying that people who identify as male cannot wear lipstick. No, yeah. No. Because it's not lipstick. That's just how their lips go. That's just their lips. That's how they're born. They're just actually very pink. It's just how they go. Pink and like, mwah. Like, it wants a kiss. It wants a smooch.
00:23:30
Speaker
I almost like a computer perfect smooch sound. I've had a lot of practice. You smooching computer. You lucky dog, Dave. I know. He's so lucky.
00:23:44
Speaker
The shiny is pink too. With pink lips. With pink lips. It looks like it's blushing. It's got pink lips and a scrotum. Good for it. Living the dream. I always forget to check shinies and I realize that I don't know what most Pokรฉmon look like shiny because I never see a shiny.
00:24:09
Speaker
I look it up for this episode, write a note, and then immediately forget it. There's some where you remember them, but most are so not worth remembering, I feel like. You remember the really bad ones like Nuke Green, Espeon. I'm still mad at Paldean Toros. It looks the same. As Toros?
00:24:34
Speaker
Um, no, no, it's identical. It's identical. And I remember I was playing scarlet and violet, and I remember encounter like hitting a Tauros and there was a star effect. And I was like, well, that's interesting. And I ran out of pokeballs. And so I just had to let it go. And I was like, it was probably shiny.
00:24:54
Speaker
but it literally just looks identical to everything else. It does. Yeah, you don't even have to feel bad about losing that shiny because nobody would even know. And also, like, yeah, think about, like, playing and just being like, here's my Toro. Some people will be like, oh, neat, shiny, is it? Yeah, it's just that it's technically
00:25:13
Speaker
my first actual shiny in a Pokemon game, like if you don't count Arceus, because Arceus has a slightly higher shiny rate, like that was my first one. I've never actually seen a shiny Pokemon until Palpatine Tauros. In my book, you still haven't seen one. Yeah. It's just because you deserve better. You deserve so much better.
00:25:34
Speaker
Hey, I got the DLC, so I'll report back. I haven't played it yet, but I have vacation now, so I'll report back. When I was sick over the weekend, I was thinking maybe I could play that, but I slept instead. I used my Nintendo points to get it for free technically, so I didn't actually buy it, and that was kind of the reason also why I bought it.
00:25:58
Speaker
Speaking of Shinies, I found a video about the most rare things that have ever happened in Pokemon and one of the things that were higher up on the list is somebody catching a Shiny Dunsparce and then it evolving into a 3-segment Dunsparce. That is very rare.
00:26:25
Speaker
The rarest thing that they were able to find was a speedrun by shenanigans underscore, where he went through enough like he just was going through the safari zone.
00:26:41
Speaker
and just was trying to get an encounter and there was just no encounter for an ungodly amount of time and these were all spaces where encounters could happen on and they estimated it at like one in like some trillions of that not happening
00:27:01
Speaker
And to date, it's the most statistically anomalous thing that's ever happened in a Pokemon in a recorded history. That's crazy. And that's what happens, too, is I'm telling you, some kid out there is the kid who played the Pokemon game with the Pokemon with the worst IVs and just had no idea and was like, why is it so hard? Yeah.
00:27:31
Speaker
Just crap Pokemon. Sometimes you just get the bad RNG and you don't even know it. I mean, back in the day, I couldn't beat Gen 1. I was just stuck at Gary struggling with my Blastoise.
00:27:45
Speaker
Yeah, but back in the day, I picked Pokemon moves based on their animations. So, you know. Well, just on their name, too. You've been like, I don't know if this is going to hurt them or not, but I guess. Yeah. Well, you didn't have a description, even. No, you didn't. I just remember like it'd be like, you want to learn rage? And I'm like, oh, that sounds dope. And I'm like, I hit them again. Or like you didn't know it, like built and stuff. I was like, this fucking sucks. Why did I get rid of something cool for this? Yeah, rage is really bad.
00:28:13
Speaker
Yeah, or fire spin. I was just like, I just feel like I'm wasting my time. Yeah, I thought that bubble beam looked really cool. And I didn't. I thought that since surf was an HM, it wasn't as powerful, but turns out surf is much more powerful. Oh, yes, surface to go. Yeah.
00:28:36
Speaker
Can Wobbuffet learn Surf? No. But can it fight back after being surfed at? You bet your fucking bottom dollar. As long as you made sure to use Mirror Coat, right? Yeah, it's one or the other. You got to pick. Surf is special, so there you go. Yeah, and now if you were to use Waterfall, then you'd use Counter. Waterfall is a physical move? Yeah.
00:29:00
Speaker
We need, right? Okay. All right, Pokemon, go home. Go home, you're drunk. What about Aqua Tail? That is a counter. That's a counter. Okay, what about... That was a fun game. What about Brine? Miracle? That is, yeah. I'm not even gonna try, I don't even know. Should I just, all right, Hyper Beam.
00:29:27
Speaker
Uh, that is special. Yeah. Uh, Giga impact. Uh, physical counter. Counter. How do you memorize what is a physical move and what's a special move? You just wasted enough of your life playing this game. Yeah. I mean, yeah, you could even go down into like, is it a touching move or a not touching move? Uh, way back in the day, and I have to hold both of these facts in my mind simultaneously.
00:29:51
Speaker
Way back in the day, gems one, two, and three, any move that was normal, regardless of what it was, would always be an attack, base move, anything psychic would always be special attack, and you go on and on and on and on, and you just remember what
00:30:12
Speaker
type was based off of what's that. And then eventually they split them up so that you'd have some attack based water moves, some special based water moves, and then you just had to memorize it. And so to this day, a lot of moves I go back and forth on because I hold both in my brain. Yeah, I can't I can't even begin to memorize them.
00:30:39
Speaker
I have to remember the names of a thousand plus Pokemon now. That's too much. Yeah. I mean, you don't have to. It's just the stupid life that we've chosen for ourselves. Let me see how many attacks there are in Pokemon. Five hundred twenty thousand.
00:31:00
Speaker
Oh, there's not that many. There's only 460 Pokemon. Oh, that's all. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. I mean, they called a lot of them recently, didn't they? They did call a bunch. The one at the very top of the list. No, it's probably. Ah, that's all A's.
00:31:22
Speaker
10 million volt thunderbolt. It's a Pikachu Z exclusive. Yeah. What's the last one? Zen Headbutt. Z Guard. It is Zippy Zap. Zippy Zap. From Eevee, right? Yeah. I guess was a... Let's go Eevee. Yeah, that's an Eevee exclusive. Yeah. You had like watery water and
00:31:50
Speaker
flamey flame. So come on, just make them a little better at the move names. Oh, Zippy's app was for Pikachu exclusively. Okay. Ah, got you. They were all on that game, but I had fun. I don't know that game. Amazing. They're so fun. My Pikachu had a fucking bowl cut. It was awesome.
00:32:14
Speaker
It actually made me like Pikachu more and dislike you. I think Pikachu is just so cliche. I mean, the only yeah, but my I had like a hipster Pikachu because he had he was wearing a he was wearing a Team Rocket camouflage shirt with like a hat and a bowl cut. He just looked dope as hell. It was very cool.
00:32:41
Speaker
Yeah, too bad I only own and have played 30 minutes of Let's Go Eevee. So I need to return to that. Yeah, just learn Zippy's App and you know, play it on easy mode. Yeah. I mean, I, I think
00:32:59
Speaker
The more that I reflect on what that game was trying to do, I didn't really like the fact that you had to use motion controls because I don't want to move to play a video game. You didn't have to. I turned my off. For the catching mechanic, it's the Pokemon Go motion controls. You could turn it off. Yeah, I did.
00:33:19
Speaker
Oh, man, that changes everything. Yeah, I am very against motion controls. I do not do them on any game. I liked playing it with the controller. They came out with the pokeball plus. OK. And the main reason I like that is because you could play the entire game with one hand. Yeah. Yeah, Dave loves to do that. You know what I use the other hand for. Oh, you're joking up to your bowl cut Pikachu. That what you're doing.
00:33:49
Speaker
No. No? Who said that? No. I was eating snacks. I was looking at swimsuit or Jan. Yeah. Well it's fun because a friend of the pod Rusty played with me too because it was two player as well.
00:34:08
Speaker
Oh, he played with you. Yeah, that's why you needed to play one handed. Well, no. Yeah, because you were holding hands with the other one. Yeah. And then no, but if you throw it at the same time, too, it will it'll like sync up if you throw at the same time and it becomes like an ultra ball pretty much.
00:34:24
Speaker
Wow, you can sync up while you play. That's right. He's really cute. And then it's charging their puzzle ball crystals. Don't you do double? Don't you do double moves to like double battles if you? Yeah. Yeah, it was fun. He had an audition. I had my Pikachu that I have to say, like, it is super fun. If you have kids, you can play with your kids. It's to play with Russ. Our previous guest, Sarah, was talking about how she plays Pokemon go. Let's go with her daughter.
00:34:54
Speaker
And it really is just about like the experience and seeing like all of the different unique Pokemon following animations and all of like your friends. I do love that. I love seeing your Pokemon with you and Pokemon in the overworld. Oh, I love that. Yeah, it's just it's just fun and cute and just a fun little like victory lap around Kanto, you know, like.
00:35:20
Speaker
And that's why they're like, Hey, you want these moves for your Pikachu that are, you know, fire type so you can beat the grass gym leader. Here you go. Have it. Who cares? Like you're just here to have fun. Yeah. Speaking of having fun.
00:35:34
Speaker
Back in the day, we had to grind Pokemon Stadium for Psyduck with Amnesia. I'm so glad that they're letting us have fun. Speaking of having fun, do you guys ever see Wobbuffet's beta?
00:35:52
Speaker
Oh, this site is in Spanish to disregard that. But if you look at the top, that is the original Wobbuffet. He is just a bean that is waking at you. That is so cute. I wonder if they scrapped that because it looks too much like Ditto. So it was like a placeholder. Well, and it's it's also technically based on the Okiyagari Kaboshi, which is like a wobble toy from Japan that
Cultural Inspirations of Wobbuffet
00:36:22
Speaker
I'm sending in the link now. And it looks exactly like that, basically. It's got like the squinty eyes and like the little mouth. And if you knock it, it wobbles over. And it kind of reminds me of like Moomin, almost. It's just like a cute little happy face. It's like a character that's like a- I only know the character Moomin Rider.
00:36:51
Speaker
in one punch, man. No, Moomin's like a little hippo or something. Okay. It's like a little white. It's got a friend who's like a gnome or something. I only know Moomin Rider. What was the Pokemon that had the other name Purin?
00:37:12
Speaker
Purin. That's Jigglypuff. That is Jigglypuff. Okay. I was like, I don't know why, but the way you said that just now, Peter. Purin. Purin. Yeah. You said Purin just like that. And sometimes I just say it like that in my head. That's right. Well, Japanese. And I believe German is Poomaloof.
00:37:31
Speaker
pool. We would just change our Smash Brothers language to Japanese just so we could go to the character selection screen and go Purin Purin Purin King Koopa King Koopa. Speaking of Smash, that's actually the first Smash Brothers melee was the first time I've ever seen a Wobbuffet. Yeah, and it would come out of its Pokemon ball and go Wobbuffet.
00:37:59
Speaker
Really loud. You'd think that it's just like a Goldeen or something. Like it's not going to do anything. But if you hit it, it fucks you up. Watch out. Hit you right back. Hit you right back. Well, it'll fuck you up because ultimately it counters because it needs to protect its little tail. It's very overprotective towards its tail so much so that it doesn't like the light hitting the tail and doesn't like things touching the tail. So that's why it lives in very dark caves.
00:38:27
Speaker
I think it lives in the dark caves mainly because that's a natural camouflage for the dark color of the tail. On that same page that I sent you guys, did you go down and look at the beta sprite where he looks like he's doing a fun dance?
00:38:46
Speaker
yeah so the one on the right is the actual sprite for gold and it is probably one of my favorite sprites because most pokemon don't look fucking miserable like he looks so fucking mad to the point where his little tail is kind of like
00:39:02
Speaker
You okay, bro? I'm gonna have to put this one in our art, even though the colors are... Also, it's way more teal than the blue. I just really, really love that spray. Another thing I forgot to say about Wobbuffet is, did Wobbuffet surprise anybody else that it was a Gen 2? I could have sworn it was three or later. I thought, honestly, no. I knew he was Gen 2. What surprised me is our next guy. I thought he was four.
00:39:30
Speaker
I thought he was four too, I thought it was three and four. I think one of the main reasons for that is that once Wobbuffet shows up in the anime, dude fucking sticks around.
Wobbuffet in the Anime World
00:39:43
Speaker
So Jesse had a Wobbuffet who had the, from the OG trainer, Benny, we all know Benny, OG. Benny and the Jets. Nope, just Benny, no Jets on this one.
00:39:55
Speaker
Do they have jets, like fighter jets in Pokemon World? Or do they just like send like Ladiases to like bomb other countries and shit? I don't know. It's fucked up. The whole war stuff behind Pokemon is like very, like, I don't know. When he's battling Mew, he turns to one of the fighter jets going by and he's like, look at this. Look at what they have to do to replicate even a modicum of our power.
00:40:21
Speaker
like the meme from invincible yes um so i'd sell jessie jessie uh accidentally trades her lick tongue oh no she uses that well not anymore because after that wobbuffet
00:40:42
Speaker
pretty much follows and goes with Jesse for every single season after, excluding Black and White, where he gets left behind with Giovanni at the Rocket base in Kanto, but then joins back with them. He's basically, there's always the Pokemon that is the, like, I pop out of my Pokeball to be silly from every season.
00:41:08
Speaker
uh we know that there was Psyduck, there was Pikachu, oh uh Victory Bell when it was deep throating James yeah so after Victory Bell was boring they put Wobbuffet in the only thing that's really interesting about it is that
00:41:26
Speaker
Jesse refused to put Wobbuffet into battle, but anytime it put itself out into battle, it fucking did work. Like Wobbuffet just racks people in battle. I saw a video of Jesse using it to block an attack from Darkrai.
00:41:45
Speaker
So it was a powerhouse, but she refused to use it in battle. However, she would choose to use it in Pokemon contests, in which it would just be terrible.
00:41:57
Speaker
So I kind of like it. It would just pop out and just go say, wow, buffet, which I kind of like now better because before I was like, oh, it just pops out and is goofy. Yeah. But knowing now that it was just popping out to say it's punchline or just like, you know, it is what it is. And then it just gets hit in the face with the China. Yeah, exactly.
00:42:20
Speaker
That's what makes me love it so much and then just seeing this like my fucking life like gold sprite of it Where it just looks like it's raining its hands are in front of it. It looks like it's looking at his hands It's like these hands. What have they done? Yeah, so Jesse had a Wobbuffet that kind of was her main Pokemon through the entire series if you look at it and
00:42:43
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, if you look, you think Jesse and James, us gen one-ers are always thinking wheezing in our buck, right? Uh, but I guess the Pokemon with the longevity is, you know, if you're not counting me out, it's, it's that Wobbuffet. It's kind of like, um,
00:43:09
Speaker
What was it? It's kind of like how people that are fans of The Simpsons think of Barney as the drunk. But he became sober like more like he's been sober more than like three times the seasons that he was actually drunk. Like it's crazy. Didn't even know he was sober. Exactly. That's good. That's good for him. For all I know, they could have made him drunk again. Yeah, I heard that.
00:43:36
Speaker
Uh, they're doing some cool things on The Simpsons again. I need to watch the Treehouse of Horrors that has the, um, the, uh, fuck. The Death Note? Death Note. That's it. Yeah, they do a Death Note anime. Oh, that's cool. We gotta watch it. Style episode. That's pretty cool. Yeah.
00:43:54
Speaker
Um, we got anything else for the Wobbuffet? I just have the, um, other names real quick, um, that are interesting. Um, so, uh, Wobbuffet actually in Japanese and the next Pokemon have a little interesting thing between the two of them. Um, but that doesn't take place in any of the other languages. So the other languages, all the names are interesting or silly, but, um, just keep in mind that, uh,
00:44:21
Speaker
Only Japan has a relationship between the names. But anyway, a French name is a cool boot. Okay. Uh, so a cool booto is a wobble toy in French and the word, okay. So it's just like a wobbly toy. That's like, okay. Cool boot. Okay.
00:44:43
Speaker
And then in German, it's, uh, wangenu. And in German, uh, wohingenu means where exactly. Oh, I like that. Yeah. So Wobbuffett's just the Pokemon that's gone. Where exactly am I like supposed to be or do, or, you know, it's just like exist. What is my being?
00:45:08
Speaker
Um, so anyway, interesting names, but yeah, I honestly, again, Wobbuff it until doing this research. I was like, I feel like there's something missing. And so I'm, I'm glad to know that it's actually like a reference. Yeah. Um, the only thing I really have to say is we call them the patient Pokemon and they are mostly described as a docile Pokemon.
00:45:38
Speaker
Um, it just seemed like good guys. Um, and gals, uh, and, um, I think that if I ever saw a Wob effect, there would be one of the Pokemon that I would not be terrified by that I would actually say to myself, Oh, I know that this Pokemon won't attack me. So I, even the one with the lips. Well, then I just be, um, you know,
00:46:09
Speaker
a little bit more confused. It's four foot three. Yeah, it's a decent height. I expected it to be taller. Yeah. I was just gonna ask that. Well, I mean, we have a couple of five foot skeletons that when we bought them, they were all scrunched up.
00:46:28
Speaker
And when we took off the packaging for them, we would stretch them out and then they would be five feet. And I'm like, that's it? That's only five feet. So what if it's even smaller than our five foot skeleton? I would expect it to be a little bit higher if I'm supposed to punch it.
00:46:47
Speaker
No, but I'm not going to punch a Wobbuffet. No, you don't want to punch a Wobbuffet. Yeah, I'd go into a cave, all of a sudden I'd be a little bit scared. What was that? And I'd turn around and go, WAAH! And I'd be like, oh, thank God. If I don't punch him, we're good. Yeah, I mean, it is Dasa, like you said, but it will become very aggressive if you try to attack the tail, much like a cat.
00:47:09
Speaker
Yeah, they even say in the Pokedex that it will use destiny bond on you. So if you step on its tail, watch out. Yeah. Destiny bonded with that. Consider your pants peed. So, I mean, we've kind of done it out of order.
00:47:31
Speaker
And so normally I would say how you evolve a, a why not into
Introducing Why Not: The Playful Pre-evolution
00:47:38
Speaker
a lab effect. But now I have to talk about something that Dave's also going to talk about later and it's lovemaking. So if you take your lab effect and put it in the daycare,
00:47:58
Speaker
Can produce an egg with with a what's the incense lacks a lax incense? That's the one for snorlax then That one might also be the lax incense No, I think it's the heavy incense I'm just gonna take a moment to look this up. We're this is the hard getting research that
00:48:27
Speaker
So it's heavy for... Lax incense for Wobbuffet for sure. So we'll just leave it at that. Give your Wobbuffet some Axe Body Spray, Kilo, and you make it sniff real good. Snorlax is the full incense. Then it will produce a baby, why not?
00:48:55
Speaker
And why not is the bright Pokemon standing at two feet tall, 30.9 pounds, Pokemon number 360, just like the Xbox 360. Because you turn 360 degrees and walk away. And this is a Gen 3 Pokemon, Gen 3 baby. What does this Pikachu look like?
00:49:25
Speaker
So we gotta talk about the Squidward nose that is its forehead. Yeah, this is all I wanted to talk about all episode. I was expecting some sort of information about this thing's fucking forehead. And they don't say shit. Nobody addresses the forehead. I hope some of you may have seen something. No, I didn't even think about it. I think it's very cute. It's cute. It should be a nose, I guess.
00:49:54
Speaker
It, I thought maybe like it was a deflated punching bag. And so maybe it's like when a balloon kind of gets a little deflated. It just reminds me of a reservoir tip at this point. Oh yeah. It also kind of, if you do look at the Okiyagari Kaboshi, the like wobble toy it's kind of based on, it could kind of, it kind of has like a little,
00:50:20
Speaker
I don't know, cone head. So that could explain the weird bumpy head on the why not, but it's just weird. It's just weird. It would be much cuter without it. Or if like, if they were trying to give it like hair, maybe make it like that cute Evie hair, it's a little spiky or something. Is that what they wanted to do? I don't even know. I don't even know. It's just so distracting. Yeah.
00:50:46
Speaker
It is the bright Pokemon. So I mean, maybe it could be an attempt at making it like a light. I don't know. It's bad. Otherwise, it's cute. I mean, it's just very happy. Very cute. He's a small little guy, much like a whooper. He's basically just like a head and a small little body.
00:51:14
Speaker
And then he's got two ears that he uses as his arms. And he's got that little tail. But instead of two eyes, there's just like one little eye on there. And instead of two ball sacks for legs, it's just one ball sack. One ball sack that's partly covered, at least.
00:51:31
Speaker
somebody drew a fan art of a why not um or a mimic you in a why not costume and it it kind of looks like a mimic you almost yeah i can see that maybe mimic who's a dead why not well that's morbid we gotta wait until we get to mimic you in what gen six seven something like that later
00:51:59
Speaker
Why not? Why not? Why not? It's fun to say because you can basically just be like, you know, why not? In German, the German name is Itso. And the French name is OK, OK. Interesting. It's OK. So it's just fun to say in every language. Yeah. And so then in
Linguistic Playfulness and Competitive Edge
00:52:25
Speaker
Japan, the name for why not is Sonano, which is the phrase Sonano, which means really? Or is that so? And so the little joke between why not and
00:52:45
Speaker
Wobbuffet in their Japanese language is that why not is saying, really? And Wobbuffet says, it is what it is. And why not says, is that so? And Wobbuffet goes, it is what it is. Oh, it's like, you know, like a parent child kind of thing. Like a cheated ass. I love that. That's cool. Yeah. Fun little name trick in
00:53:14
Speaker
But I mean, it still does nothing to explain the monstrosity. That is the boil on its head. Mutation, that is the why not. That's little. It probably got skull deformation from.
00:53:30
Speaker
being born. Being a baby. Yeah, it's just a little baby baby. I don't think of why not as a baby Pokemon, but I do. I think it's cute. Cute little happy guy. It's on. So what the arms that Wobbuffet has is currently why not ears? It looks like ears hair ish kind of thing like floppy ears is what I'm getting. Yeah, it kind of serves both purposes. It looks like hair, but it can use it to kind of shrug its shoulders.
00:53:59
Speaker
Yeah, and they are considered its ears, but it can use them to eat sweet fruits from your garden. It does love sweet, sweet fruits. Yeah. Like any baby does. Yeah. And they love to just jam-pack themselves into each other while eating sweet fruits. Yeah.
00:54:24
Speaker
So they too like to live in caves and they like to travel together, but they'll test their endurance against each other like that one guy who would
00:54:37
Speaker
tests, he would take an entire bag of M&Ms and squeeze them against each other until one of them died and then put the victor against the next one until there was one strongest M&M. And he would send that to the M&M factory for breeding purposes. That's basically what why not is doing. They're just strengthening each other's endurance by
00:55:05
Speaker
when they rest up against each other, they'll just like squeeze against each other real hard to see who can tough it out the best. And that's sort of like their way of play. And make a why not diamond. Yeah. Through struggle comes great things.
00:55:27
Speaker
Unless you have leftovers. So again, why not is one of those Pokemon that was relegated to Ubers for having the Shadow Tag ability.
00:55:41
Speaker
So it's crazy that a baby Pokemon would go up against the actual Pokemon God, but that has happened before in the past, um, which is just a fun fact. And like I said before, uh, level five could be used in the little cup and could be used as level 100 in the Uber, in a Uber tier. So. Little guy, little fellow friend.
00:56:12
Speaker
Yeah, what would we call him? A little guy? A little guy, yeah. He's not a little stinker. He does not have stinker energy. No, he looks like he's, I don't know. Just a little guy. That's what I get. Yeah, he just looks like a little, yeah. He maybe is a little fella. A little fella. He doesn't have stinker energy yet. No, no, no, no, definitely not. A two feet.
00:56:40
Speaker
Little friend, yeah. Little buddy. Little buddy, little friend. I like little friend. If you look at the sitting cutie, it is sitting and cute. Well, there you go. Well, we call him a little slugger. Little slugger. Champ. The Wobbuffet sitting cutie is actually pretty good. Do they have a female one too or just a male one? I didn't see a female one.
00:57:08
Speaker
Ben, you gotta get the lips out. Shout outs to my friend Dan, we still have to finish Paranoia Agent. It is very good, the sitting cutie. Wobbuffet is top tier, one of the best I've seen. Best in the game. Best there ever was. Female. Just a goat. I don't see a female one. Man, missed opportunity.
00:57:37
Speaker
Be better, Nintendo. It's better. But there is a sword and shield figure that is a female one. That's pretty cool. Nice. He also is pretty cool. Cart. One last thing.
Quirky Characteristics and Trading Card Trivia
00:57:52
Speaker
Why not will smile even when angry, just like myself? And the only way that you will know if a why not is angry, they're slapping their tail on the ground.
00:58:03
Speaker
You know how much they love their tail? If they're slapping it on the ground, it means they're angry, so. It's so funny, because Chainsaw slaps his tail around a lot, and he slaps it on the ground, especially when he's about to climb on something that he knows he's not supposed to. So he'll like slap his tail and stare at the surface that he's wanting to jump to. And then it's just like giving himself away. It's like, no, bro, I see you. You better not jump up there, you fucking asshole.
00:58:35
Speaker
He's mad he was mad he was getting ready to jump on top of my table here and I said no So yeah, I I believe that's that's it for these two Little sluggers game time game time. Well game time. All right So we want to start with why not or Wobbuff? Oh
00:58:57
Speaker
Let's just keep the cycle going. Let's start with Wobbuffet. Start with our wobby boy. All right. Well, welcome to the trading card game. Dave, Peter, and Steven are going to guess how many cards, why not, and Wobbuffet appear in the trading card game. So you're going to start with Wobbuffet, our Gen 2 boy, and girl. It's like a breath of fresh air to be able to guess again.
00:59:23
Speaker
Yeah, I know. I was so disappointed last time. Yeah. Freaking internet spoilers, man. Yeah. So Wobbuffet, I'm feeling a number. That number is 21. All right. We got a 21 in the house. 22. Got a 22 in the house. 26. Oh, that's confident. But Peter wins. Oh, shit.
00:59:51
Speaker
There are only 20. I actually thought there were more, but just 20. I was going to either guess 21 or 19, so. Yeah, you would have won either way. So nice one, Peter. Very nice, very nice. All right, so baby Pokemon. We've had a few baby Pokemon at this point. Yeah. We've remembered their numbers. Yeah. So let's take some wild guesses for our little why not.
01:00:23
Speaker
I'm gonna guess. Oh, Steven, you're about to go. Um, I'll just throw out a six. Alright. I'm gonna guess a three. I was gonna say three. We're gonna go four. We have a tie because there are five. Five why not cards? Why not five? I think that's a good amount for this little guy. Pretty good for a baby. Yeah, I think it's pretty decent.
01:00:55
Speaker
Well, thank you, Sarah, for those wonderful numbers. I'm so glad to be back in the game. Eyes on the prize. Eyes on the prize. Not like unknown at what, 78 or whatever. No, it was like a ridiculous number, right? It's like 100 something, right? It was 92. All right. Off a little bit, but.
01:01:18
Speaker
Crazy, you know what's this crazy? Fuckin' foiled sex. So, we're gonna do the game, who you gonna fuck? I'm going to list four different Pokemon, you let me know which one, if fucked with Wobbuffet, not why not, it's a baby monster, would not produce an egg. All right, so, let us see, am I missing one from the list? I definitely, oh, there it is, I just didn't scroll down enough. All right.
01:01:47
Speaker
So here are the four Pokemon. Grimer, Jinx, Gardevoir, and Gulpin. This one's in honor of its cute lips. I just decided to go through. So are you saying all of these Pokemon you just shared have cute lips? I would beg to differ. Well... I'm not kissing no Grimers.
01:02:12
Speaker
Yeah, but Grimer is just fun. I don't know, I was running out of time, so Grimer is thrown in. Grimer, Golden. Jinx, Gardevoir, and Gulpin. Fuck, this is gonna be hard. I'm gonna say Grimer. I'm gonna say Gardevoir. Um... No, actually, can I change my answer to Jinx? I'm gonna say Gardevoir. Alright, at least we have all the base cover for the most part.
01:02:41
Speaker
It is a amorphous type Pokemon. So Grimer, Gardevoir, and Gulpin are all amorphous. Gardevoir is amorphous? I should have said Jinx. So the thing about it being amorphous is I think it's more, think of like Ralts. Yes. Ralts is kind of just like a little tube of toothpaste with a little cap on it. So Jinx is a human-like, while Gardevoir is an amorphous human-like.
01:03:10
Speaker
That's why the two were confusing. Oh, I see. I was thinking Wob Fett's Amorphous, Grimer's Amorphous. Gulpin. Gulpin's Amorphous. Jinx is human shaped, but Gardevoir also has to be human shaped. Yeah, that's why it's weird, but it's not all the way up to it. Yeah. Jinx, I just wanted it to be the answer because it also has cute lipstick. And that's that.
01:03:37
Speaker
That was a good one. And this was a good podcast. Well done, us. Pat on Backs. Yeah. Wabuffet. Wabuffet. Yeah. It is what it is. Ain't that just the way? Ain't that just the way? I say that like three times a day. Yeah, me too.
01:03:57
Speaker
If anybody hasn't watched their full time over the garden wall yet, you are on notice and you are on watch. Like stop listening to this podcast and watch over the garden wall. It is on Hulu. It is the most glorious show ever.
01:04:12
Speaker
And November is still enough time. You could still start it in November and it's seasonal. So do you know what I discovered? Over the Garden Wall came out in 2014, but it started airing on November 2nd. So it is a November time show. Yeah. Must watch it. You still have time to harvest your grains and come in for Over the Garden Wall.
