In today's reading we will cover Matthew Chapters 6:22-34 and 7:1-29 and Luke Chapter 6:37-49.

Today's reading will teach us about not worrying about what we need in life because God knows what we need. We need to seek God's kingdom first and God will make sure we have everything we need! We will also learn about the importance of following the right leaders. We should not follow those who are spiritually blind or are false prophets. We can see who is okay to follow by looking at their fruit. While we are learning how to be like Jesus we need to remember that we will never be greater than He is, but when we learn everything we will be like Jesus. We need to be careful when correcting others, because it may be that we ourselves are guilty of committing the same sin and have a "beam" in our own eye while we try to remove the "speck of dust" from someone else's eye. God has good gifts ready for us. We need only to ask for them! Jesus reminded us today that treating others the way we want them to treat us is the whole message of the Law and the prophets! Wow, sounds easy, doesn't it? Just love one another!

Most importantly, for our daily application today, Jesus taught us that it is not enough to simply say that we believe that He is the Messiah and call Him Lord. We must do what God wants. We must obey Jesus and His teachings, which is what we call being His disciple (student.) If we do not do what God wants or what Jesus teaches us then when we meet Him He will tell us that He never knew us because we were doing wrong things and not what He taught us.

Introduction to Jesus' Teachings

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome back, everybody. Thank you for joining me for today's daily Bible reading as we go through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. I am so glad that you are joining me today for our daily reading.
00:00:16
Speaker
We are presently reading teachings from Jesus. So if you are just finding this event, we have a lot to cover. Jesus's teachings make up only two months of our entire year.
00:00:31
Speaker
And so we started on August 10th and we will be finished with his ah actual teaching by October 10th. When we start reading through um the book of Acts and the other letters that follow in the new covenant.
00:00:47
Speaker
So out of all the time that he was with us, we have a lot to cover in two short months. So if you are following along on your commitment calendar, it is time to get that out in your sticker or whatever you're using to mark off those days.
00:01:05
Speaker
Because guess what? You're about to hear the Bible today.

Understanding and Obedience to God

00:01:12
Speaker
We are going to be reading a lot today. So let's get right into it. Some of it we have already read a little bit before. And what we're going to find in this New Covenant reading with Jesus is that Jesus is giving us the pictures so that we can understand the big picture.
00:01:32
Speaker
We know from the old covenant that Jesus was coming and that he was to be the one who reconciled God to the people because our sins were keeping us separate from God.
00:01:44
Speaker
And now we have Jesus who has come and he is going to be teaching us what we need to do in order to have eternal life. And you may be saying, well, I already know we just need to believe in Jesus as my savior.
00:01:58
Speaker
And that is one part of it. And Jesus is going to be teaching us another part too. So let's keep our ears open. And he's actually kind of already told us this.
00:02:10
Speaker
he He told us earlier that we needed to obey the father. We needed to believe in the one who sent him. And so that means that we don't stop believing in God's teachings.

Trusting in God's Provision

00:02:22
Speaker
So here we go. We are going to pick up today in Matthew chapter 6 and Luke chapter 6 and Matthew chapter 7.
00:02:35
Speaker
Your eye is like a lamp for your body, said Jesus. If your eye is good instead of sinful, your body is full of like If your eye is sinful, your body will be full of darkness.
00:02:54
Speaker
Light is supposed to be inside you. If there is darkness instead, then it is really, really dark.
00:03:06
Speaker
You cannot follow two leaders at one time, said Jesus. You will hate one of them and love the other one, or you will obey one and not the other.
00:03:18
Speaker
You cannot serve God and money too.
00:03:24
Speaker
So I tell you not to worry, said Jesus. Don't worry about what you will eat or drink. Don't worry about what you will wear. Life is much more important than food.
00:03:36
Speaker
And your body is much more important than clothes.
00:03:42
Speaker
See the birds in the air, said Jesus. They don't plant food. They don't bring in crops. They don't save food in barns.
00:03:54
Speaker
God, your father, feeds them. You are more important than birds. Can anybody make his life last an hour longer by worrying?
00:04:08
Speaker
Why worry about clothes? Said Jesus. Look at the flowers in the field. They don't work. They don't make their own clothes.
00:04:19
Speaker
But Solomon had beautiful clothes, and his clothes were not as wonderful as one of these flowers. And that's the way God dresses the grass in the fields.
00:04:31
Speaker
The grass is here today and gone tomorrow. So God will give you clothes too, won't
00:04:40
Speaker
Your faith is so small, said Jesus. Do not worry. Do not say, what will we eat? What will we drink? but What will we wear?
00:04:53
Speaker
People who do not believe in God worry about those things. But your Father in heaven knows you need these things. He knows what you need before you even ask for it.
00:05:05
Speaker
Put God first in your life. Then he will make sure you have everything you need.
00:05:14
Speaker
I love that promise. Don't worry about tomorrow, said Jesus. Tomorrow can worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own, so why add tomorrow's worries to today?

Judgment, Forgiveness, and Reciprocity

00:05:30
Speaker
Don't blame people for what they do, said Jesus. In the Big Bible, they use the word judge. Then you won't be blamed or judged for what you do.
00:05:43
Speaker
Forgive people. And then you will be forgiven.
00:05:49
Speaker
Give and good things will come to you in return, said Jesus. You will get plenty. God will shake it up. Then he will push it down to make room for more.
00:06:02
Speaker
And God will give you much. It will run over and flow out into your laps. and God will be fair to you. He will give to you the same way that you give to others.
00:06:17
Speaker
Then Jesus told his followers a story. Can a blind man lead another blind man? Asked Jesus. Wouldn't they both fall into a hole?
00:06:30
Speaker
The learner is not greater than his teacher. But when he has learned everything, he will be like his teacher.
00:06:41
Speaker
Why point at a bit of dust in someone's eye? You don't even see that big log in your own eye. How can you say, let's get that dust out?
00:06:53
Speaker
You have a log in your own eye, said Jesus. First, get rid of the log in your eye, and then you will see clearly and you will be able to get rid of the other person's dust.
00:07:07
Speaker
Don't give dogs something special that is for God, said Jesus. And don't give beautiful pearls to pigs. If you do, they will run over them, they'll mash them under their feet, and then they will run over you too.
00:07:24
Speaker
Ask, and God will give you what you ask for, said Jesus. Look for him, and then you will find him. Tap on his door. He will open it for you.
00:07:37
Speaker
Everybody who asks gets. The person who looks for God finds him. The door opens for the person who taps on it.
00:07:51
Speaker
Let's say your son asks you for bread, said Jesus. Will you give him a rock? And what if he asks you for a fish? Would you give him a snake? You know how to give good gifts to your children.
00:08:06
Speaker
So of course your Father in heaven gives good gifts when you ask.
00:08:12
Speaker
Treat people the way you want them to treat you. This is the whole message of the law and the prophets,

Path to Eternal Life

00:08:21
Speaker
said Jesus.
00:08:24
Speaker
Go in through the small gate, said Jesus. There is a wide gate and a wide road, but people who take the wide road will be in trouble. there Many people will follow the wide road.
00:08:40
Speaker
There is also a small gate and a narrow road. This road leads to life. Only a few people find it.
00:08:53
Speaker
Watch out for prophets who lie, said Jesus. They may pretend to be sheep, but inside they are mean wolves. You will know them by the way they act.
00:09:07
Speaker
What they do is like bad fruit. People don't pick grapes from weeds. Good trees don't make good fruit. And they don't pick figs from weeds.
00:09:20
Speaker
Bad trees make bad fruit. A good tree cannot make bad fruit, it and a bad tree cannot make good fruit. Trees get cut down if they do not make good fruit.
00:09:34
Speaker
They get burned up, said Jesus. So you will know trees and people by their fruit. You can tell what they are like by what they do.
00:09:50
Speaker
Good things happen when good people are around, said Jesus. And that's because they have good stored up in their hearts. But bad things happen when bad people are around, and that's because they have sin stored up in their hearts.
00:10:06
Speaker
And people's words come from their hearts first. Then the words come out of their mouths.

Acting on Jesus' Teachings

00:10:14
Speaker
Just calling me Lord won't get people into God's kingdom. People must do what my father wants, said Jesus. Many people will say, Lord, we spoke in your name.
00:10:28
Speaker
We sent away bad spirits in your name. We did wonders in your name. But I will tell them, I never really knew you. So get away from me.
00:10:40
Speaker
You do wrong things. Why do you call me Lord? You don't do what I tell you.
00:10:48
Speaker
Some people hear me and obey, said Jesus, and they are like the wise man. He built his house on the rock. Rain came down and rivers got high and wind roared and beat on his house.
00:11:03
Speaker
But his house did not fall down. It stood safe on the rock. Some people hear me, but they do not obey, said Jesus, and they are like the foolish man.
00:11:16
Speaker
He built his house on the sand. The rain came down. The rivers got high. Wind roared and beat on his house. And it crashed down.
00:11:30
Speaker
People were surprised to hear about what Jesus was teaching. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about. He did not sound like any teacher they knew.

Recap of Metaphorical Teachings

00:11:44
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:11:50
Speaker
I told you there'd be a lot. There's a lot every day.
00:11:56
Speaker
Well, let's start at the beginning to make sure we have understanding of what Jesus is talking about. So Jesus told us that our eye is like a lamp for the body. And if our eye is good instead of sinful, then our body is full of light.
00:12:12
Speaker
But if our eye is sinful, then our body will be full of darkness. So then Jesus talks about, later on, he talks about,
00:12:26
Speaker
Correcting people and saying why point at a bit of dust in someone's eye? You don't even see the big log in your own eye. So how can you say let's get that dust out?
00:12:37
Speaker
You have a log in your own eye. First get rid of the log in your own eye and then you will see clearly. You will be able to get rid of the other person's dust.
00:12:49
Speaker
So what is Jesus talking about here with all the eyes? Another thing he tells us about the eyes is that we can't lead somebody else if we can't see. He's referring to spiritual blindness here in all of these things.
00:13:06
Speaker
So Jesus is telling us is that... If we remember, we talked about our mind is where everything starts. And Jesus tells us here that what comes out of our mouth starts in our heart.
00:13:19
Speaker
What comes out of our heart is what comes out of our mouths. So if we have been polluting our mind with bad things that we see and hear and do, then when we then we will be dark inside.
00:13:34
Speaker
And our eyes are like a lamp that show whether we are light or dark inside. So if we are spiritually blind, then it's difficult to lead other people, whether we are leading or trying to correct other people.
00:13:50
Speaker
We can't correct people when we ourselves are dealing with sin in our lives. And so that is the speck of dust that we might see in someone else's eye or the beam that is sticking out of our own eye.
00:14:04
Speaker
We need to be careful when

True Discipleship and Obedience

00:14:06
Speaker
correcting others that we are not correcting them for something that we ourselves are already doing. the Pharisees would do that. And Jesus is telling us that we in order to be able to lead other people, we cannot be spiritually blind or we will both fall into a hole.
00:14:23
Speaker
We also need to be careful of people who claim to be good leaders, prophets, but really they are not. They are like wolves in sheep's clothing.
00:14:36
Speaker
And how do we tell them apart? How do we tell a leader who is blind and the leader who is a false prophet apart from a leader who is not spiritually blind and who is ah an actual true prophet, a true leader?
00:14:55
Speaker
We tell by the fruit that they are producing. And Jesus tells us here that if we are good inside and we are following him, then we will produce good fruit.
00:15:07
Speaker
But if we are not following him and we are not producing good fruit, then we are producing bad fruit. And be careful with that bad fruit producing people because Jesus tells us that they will be burned up.
00:15:23
Speaker
Trees that don't produce good fruit get tossed into the fire and it will be the same with people. They don't know him. Jesus says that if we are not doing what he taught us to do, then we are not really his followers.
00:15:41
Speaker
He will say that he did not know us because we were doing wrong things. So it's very important to remember that we need to be obeying and following Jesus so that he will know us when our time comes.
00:15:56
Speaker
And we need to remember as we are learning to be like Jesus, that is what we are called. ah That is when we are called a disciple. When Jesus says in our version that the learner is not greater than the teacher,
00:16:10
Speaker
He is talking about a disciple, a student. We are to be Jesus's disciples, Jesus's students. And we're not just learning from him.
00:16:21
Speaker
We are learning to be like him. And we need to remember that we will never be greater than he is. But when we learn everything, then we will be like him.
00:16:41
Speaker
Let's see. Oh, and God gives us good gifts according to how we give. We need to be careful to not judge or blame others because we are not perfect. And God is teaching us here through Jesus that if we are blaming people and judging people, then we will be judged.
00:17:03
Speaker
We will be blamed. Instead, we need to forgive people. And if we don't forgive, then God will not forgive us That's tough, isn't it? But Jesus did tell us today that there is a wide road with a wide gate and there is a narrow road with a narrow gate.
00:17:24
Speaker
And he says that the narrow gate is harder to go through. His teachings can be tough to follow. And he says that not everybody will find that gate and go through it.
00:17:35
Speaker
But many people will walk the wide road and try to enter through the wide gate and they will not make it through. because you need to enter through the narrow gate.
00:17:46
Speaker
Narrow is the gate that leads to eternal life.
00:17:51
Speaker
And how how do we get to that eternal life again? By first believing in Jesus and in the one who sent him, so we will believe in God.
00:18:02
Speaker
Jesus told us a couple of days ago in our reading that he does not act on his own. He does the will of God. And so we need to obey God's teaching as well.
00:18:13
Speaker
And that's what Jesus tells us today. He says,
00:18:20
Speaker
People must do what my father wants, said Jesus. So it's not just Jesus who had to do what God wanted. He came to fulfill and to do what God wanted him to do.
00:18:33
Speaker
And if we are not greater than he is, then we too must obey our father in heaven. And we must obey the son because the son was sent by the father.
00:18:45
Speaker
So we've talked before a little bit about the hierarchy, meaning the level, the chain of command. We have God, the father who sent Jesus, the son, the Messiah, who came to teach us so that we can be disciples and learn how to be like him. And in doing so, we are all pointing to God and he is who we are ultimately obeying.
00:19:08
Speaker
And that if we do not obey the son, then we are not obeying the father.
00:19:15
Speaker
So how do you like all of that teaching today? Was that not amazing? I love it. God taught us a lot of stuff today.
00:19:26
Speaker
oh and also we need to seek God's kingdom first and he will make sure that everything else we need is provided for us. We don't need to worry about what we will eat or drink or wear or anything else, which are the three main basics.

Reinforcing Jesus' Principles

00:19:44
Speaker
what we will eat, what we will drink, what we will wear. Because Jesus says that our Father in heaven knows what we need before we ask him. And we need to seek his kingdom first. So how do we seek his kingdom?
00:19:57
Speaker
By following the Son. and by believing in the Father and doing what he wants us to do. And then Jesus will know us. And God will provide everything else that we need if we just seek his kingdom first.
00:20:13
Speaker
We've talked about that a lot of times this year. You guys already know that. And we've referred to this very writing where Jesus told us that. Well, now we got to see it firsthand.
00:20:25
Speaker
We don't need to worry about anything. Ah, that is such a wonderful promise. Well, thank you for joining me today. There was a lot of daily application there today.
00:20:37
Speaker
And just remember that this is going to be a lifetime of learning. You can't learn it all, but the sooner we start, the better. Jesus said here today that when we learn everything, that we will be like him.
00:20:51
Speaker
and i just don't know that we can learn everything all the time we might be aware of it but we are not ever going to attain perfection so i would say we are always learning we're always learning and so we will never be greater than him that's just that's just never going to happen even if we learned everything we would still never be greater than jesus so I hope that you continue learning about Jesus your whole life, because even though it it only takes two months to read the overview of what Jesus taught us, it takes us a lifetime to learn it.
00:21:30
Speaker
It may only take us a little while to read it, but it sure takes us a lot of practice and and living it out every day for us to learn it. So thank you for joining me today. I hope that you feel like God has lit your light today.
00:21:45
Speaker
You have been filling your eyes with God's word. So we know that you have God's light inside of you. You are not dark inside. So let that light shine.
00:21:57
Speaker
Don't put it under a bowl. We set our light high and it can be seen from the top of a hill. Let's see all those lights out there. Oh, it's so bright.
00:22:10
Speaker
and So that means we need to share this event so that other people will know how important it is to not just believe in Jesus as their savior, but to obey him and the father. And that we will learn about all those other things that we talked about today too, is that there is certainly enough to talk about and share about.
00:22:29
Speaker
So let's click those light buttons and attract other people to hearing this wonderful news about how to learn to be like Jesus, a disciple. And we do that with the sharing and the the clicking of the light button. It looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart.
00:22:46
Speaker
And by following so that other people will see this event and hear God's word.

Conclusion and Spiritual Growth

00:22:52
Speaker
We love spreading the word about reading God's word. That is how we learn how to obey and know God.
00:22:58
Speaker
So i hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you get around to hearing or watching today's daily reading here on August 25th. And i will be here for tomorrow's reading right here, wherever you're listening or watching.
00:23:13
Speaker
And I hope to see you then.
00:23:17
Speaker
Have a good day.
