Today's reading will cover the Book of John Chapter 7.

Today we will read and discuss the importance of making God the most important one in our lives and making sure we are promoting HIM rather than ourselves. Jesus tells us today that if we speak for ourselves then we are making ourselves important. Instead, we are to make GOD the most important one and point people toward God, not toward ourselves. We will also be reminded that believing in Jesus will grant us being given the Holy Spirit by God so that streams of living water will flow from us! Let us be encouraged to tell other people about God's Kingdom so that they, too, can be filled with the joy of knowing God's Holy Spirit within them!

Introduction and Purpose of Reading

00:00:03
Speaker
Hello and welcome to today's September 10th in our daily reading from the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. My name is Robin. I am within the Family Way Coaching and I am your reader.
00:00:16
Speaker
Thank you for joining me for this event. If you are following along on your bookmark calendar or your commitment calendar, go ahead and take that out because you're about to hear the reading for September 10th.
00:00:31
Speaker
We are exactly halfway through Jesus's ministry time as he was with us. Our reading started on August 10th, and it will end on October 10th for his actual time ah of his lifetime.
00:00:46
Speaker
And then we will begin the letters. So today we are going to be reading about...

Themes of Jesus’s Journey and Beliefs

00:00:54
Speaker
Jesus and heading into Jerusalem for the Feast of Tents.
00:01:00
Speaker
And we're going to be reading about the disbelief that his own family members had about him. We're also going to read about Jesus telling us that if we are thirsty, meaning spiritually thirsty, that all who come to him will have streams of living water flowing out from them.
00:01:20
Speaker
And we will also read about God's perfect timing. We've been reading this year that God has perfect timing, that he has things lined up for things to happen in just the right time.
00:01:33
Speaker
So today we are going to read about God's perfect timing for when these events occurred.

Disbelief and God's Timing in Jesus’s Revelation

00:01:41
Speaker
So yesterday we left off with our last bit saying that ah Jesus was reminding us that we needed to forgive other people from our heart. And that if we don't, that our father in heaven will also not forgive us.
00:01:57
Speaker
And so now the holiday of tents was coming up soon. And Jesus's brothers told him, you should go to Judea for the holiday and then your followers can see your wonders.
00:02:08
Speaker
You want people to know who you are, don't you? Don't keep these things a secret. You can do all these wonderful things, they said.
00:02:19
Speaker
So why don't you show yourself to all the world? Now, Jesus' brothers said this, but they didn't really believe in him. The right time has not come yet, said Jesus.
00:02:33
Speaker
Anytime is right right for you, the world can't hate you, but the world hates me. And it's because I tell them that they sin. You go on to Judea. I am not going yet.
00:02:47
Speaker
So Jesus stayed in Galilee and his brothers went to Judea. Later, Jesus went too, but he didn't let anybody know he was going.
00:02:58
Speaker
He went in secret. Now the leaders of God's people watched for Jesus at this holiday and asked, Where is that man? There was a lot of whispering about Jesus.
00:03:12
Speaker
Some people said, He is a good man. Other people said, He's just fooling everybody. But nobody would say anything out loud about him because they were afraid of the leaders.
00:03:30
Speaker
Now, Jesus stayed out of sight until halfway through the holiday. And then he went to the worship house. And here there he began to teach. The people at the worship house were surprised.
00:03:42
Speaker
And they asked, how did this man learn so much? He didn't learn these things in school.

Jesus's Teachings and Authority Questioned

00:03:50
Speaker
This is not my teaching, said Jesus. It comes from God. God sent me. Choose to do what God wants and then you will find out if my teaching is from God.
00:04:05
Speaker
If I speak just for me, then I am making myself important. But if I make God important, then what I say true. crew Moses gave you God's laws, said Jesus, but you don't obey them.
00:04:19
Speaker
Why are you trying to kill me? Who is trying to kill you? The crowd asked him. We think a bad spirit must be in control of you. I did a wonder on us on the worship day, said Jesus.
00:04:35
Speaker
I made a man well, and everybody was surprised. But you also work on the worship day, and you do it to keep some of God's rules, like circumcision.
00:04:46
Speaker
You will perform circumcision on a worship day, and that is considered okay. So don't judge things just by the way they look. Then some of the people began to talk about Jesus.
00:05:00
Speaker
Aren't our leaders trying to kill him? They asked. Yet here he is. He is speaking out loud in the crowds. And the leaders, they aren't stopping him. So do they think he really is the one that God promised to send?
00:05:15
Speaker
We know where this man is from, they said. And when the promised one comes, nobody will know where he is from. Yes, you do know me, said Jesus, and you also know where I'm from.
00:05:30
Speaker
but it wasn't my idea to come here. It was God's idea.

Debates on Jesus’s Origins and Identity

00:05:37
Speaker
God sent me. He is true.
00:05:42
Speaker
You don't know him, but I know him, and I came from him.
00:05:49
Speaker
Then the leaders of God's people tried to find a way to catch Jesus. But nobody could because it wasn't time yet. Now, lots of people believed in Jesus.
00:06:02
Speaker
He must be the one God promised to send. They said, look at all the wonders he has done. Now, the Jewish leaders heard people whispering about Jesus, so they sent the worship house guards to catch him.
00:06:16
Speaker
I am here for just a little while, said Jesus, and then I will go back to the one who sent me. And you will look for me, but you won't find me because you can't come where I am going.
00:06:29
Speaker
Where does he think he can go? Where could where could he go that we could not find him? Asked the leaders. Will he go to another land to teach? What does he mean?
00:06:40
Speaker
What is he talking about? Now, the last day of the holiday was the most important day. So Jesus stood up in front of the people that day and he talked loudly.
00:06:55
Speaker
If you are thirsty, come to me, said Jesus. Believe in me. Then streams of living water will flow out of you.
00:07:09
Speaker
Jesus was talking about God's Holy Spirit. God was going to give his Holy Spirit, it and God would send him to people who believed in Jesus.
00:07:20
Speaker
But God had not yet given them the Holy Spirit because Jesus wasn't finished with his work yet. We are sure that Jesus is the prophet, said some people.
00:07:32
Speaker
And others also said, He is the one God promised to send. But others said, How could the Promised One come from Galilee? The Promised One is supposed to come from King David's family.
00:07:46
Speaker
And they come from Bethlehem. And that's the town where David lived. So the people didn't agree about Jesus, and some people wanted to catch him.

Prophecies and Misunderstandings of Jesus's Background

00:07:56
Speaker
But nobody even touched him.
00:08:01
Speaker
At last, the worship house guards went back to the leaders. And why didn't you bring Jesus with you? asked the leaders. Because nobody ever talked the way he talks, they answered.
00:08:15
Speaker
Did he fool you too, the leaders asked. Have any leaders believed in him? No. It's this foolish crowd and they don't know anything about the law, so bad things are going to happen to them.
00:08:30
Speaker
Now Nicodemus was one of the leaders and he had gone to visit Jesus one time. So he asked the other leaders, what does our law say? Can people be blamed before we even hear them?
00:08:43
Speaker
First, we need to find out what he is saying and doing. Are you from Galilee too? Asked the other leaders. Look it up. You will find out that a prophet does not come from Galilee.
00:08:56
Speaker
And then the leaders went home. And Jesus went to Olive Mountain. And that is the end of our reading today.
00:09:08
Speaker
What do you think? All this talk about could he be, is he, he is, but how is it possible? So the people who were not educated in the Old Covenant,
00:09:23
Speaker
couldn't understand how he could potentially be the ah Messiah because they only viewed him as having lived and come from Galilee in Nazareth. So we have in Matthew chapter one, I believe it is, chapter two.
00:09:41
Speaker
And Matthew says in chapter two, verse 23, says he went and lived in a town called Nazareth, meaning his father and and and Mary, Mary and Joseph.
00:10:00
Speaker
And so according to Matthew, it says he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets that he would be called a Nazarene. Now, this is not exactly a prophecy because Jesus was not technically called a Nazarene.
00:10:15
Speaker
But here's where it it it is affiliated with that. So Jesus in Psalm 22, verse six through seven, and in Isaiah 53, verse three, are the prophecies that Matthew had in mind.
00:10:31
Speaker
And the meaning of he shall be called a Nazarene is something akin to saying he shall be despised and mocked by his own people. Because in Hebrew, there are no vowels.
00:10:42
Speaker
So the Hebrew spelling would have been like N-S-R, N-Z-R, something like that. And so one of ah the early names associated for, quote, what we might call today Christians is Nazarenes, because that is where Jesus had lived.
00:11:00
Speaker
Now we know that Jesus was technically born in Bethlehem, but so, and Jesus didn't bother to waste his time trying to prove his lineage. He is telling us here today that his testimony speaks for itself.
00:11:15
Speaker
So he was ah in Acts chapter 26 and 22, after his conversion, Paul mentioned Jesus of Nazareth.
00:11:26
Speaker
And one of the names of the early Christians was Nazarenes, as is quoted in Acts 24, verse five. And the term Nassara, which is Aramaic for Nazarene, is still used today by Muslims to identify a Christian.
00:11:43
Speaker
So i wanted to I wanted for us to be clear and understand that because you know how I feel about making sure that we understand God's word. And so this was something that I had wondered about too. I'm thinking, well, how could the Torah leaders ah not know that he was...
00:12:00
Speaker
Supposed to come from there when we have Matthew quoting and he shall be called a Nazarene. It was more that he was referencing that if you you might remember if you've been here for a while that that area of Galilee, it had originally been settled after or during the exile when Nebuchadnezzar had sent ah people to go live.
00:12:22
Speaker
in in that area. It was very common that when a ah king would displace the the native peoples who lived there, that he would then ah move settlers in to live in that area so that it would not be called considered desolate.
00:12:39
Speaker
And then that way that it wouldn't be overtaken all the way by wild animals and such. And so they had a lot of difficulty though. And so it was ah suggested that they leave some um ah spiritual leaders there, some some priests there, in order to teach the people about the God of that land's ways so that they could appease the God. So they were not opposed to, remember, worshiping many gods.
00:13:07
Speaker
So they sent people to live in that area, but they were not Jews. And so they were considered very lowly, especially after the ah reentry of the people from after the exile.
00:13:20
Speaker
The people still lived there. And it was considered like the slums. So Jesus had come from what would be considered a bad neighborhood. And they're saying, well, how could anybody come from that bad neighborhood?
00:13:33
Speaker
And even when ah the followers were initially being called, we have that. and Let's see, who was that that said that?
00:13:50
Speaker
Oh, I just read that earlier.
00:13:56
Speaker
When he was calling, I think it was Philip, that they, he said that they were saying, well, can anything good come from Nazareth? And the, and the brother said, ah come and see.
00:14:09
Speaker
And so they were, they were just surprised. And so we, we shouldn't, judge people based upon where they come from. And so when Jesus was always coming back to his area of home, they were like, we we know this man, he's not a prophet.
00:14:25
Speaker
We know who he is. And Jesus says, yes, you know where I came from, but you don't really know where I came from. So we want to be sure that as we're reading today, that our daily application is that to we are to look at the teaching.

Central Message: Making God the Priority and Sharing the Message

00:14:44
Speaker
And it says, this is not my teaching. Also, we know from the old covenant prophecies, it says that God will teach us himself. So while he had not gone to school to be a Torah leader, God had taught him.
00:14:59
Speaker
You remember way back when he was about 12 and he had gone ah for the Passover and he had stayed in the temple and was asking questions. So he he was learning and learning and learning.
00:15:12
Speaker
And so they were just surprised because he didn't receive a what would be considered ah formal education. So Jesus says, this is not my teaching. It comes from God.
00:15:23
Speaker
And God sent me. So choose to do what God wants and then you will find out if my teaching is from God. If I speak just for me, then I make myself important.
00:15:34
Speaker
But if I make God important, what I say is true. So this is one of our daily applications today is that when we are talking to people and we are moved to speak to them about God's kingdom, we want to make sure that we are elevating God, that we are making God the most important.
00:15:56
Speaker
Throughout this year, our primary daily application, our first one has been to make God the most important one in our lives. And here we see Jesus exemplifying this, uh,
00:16:09
Speaker
daily application he says i'm not giving a message about myself i'm talking about god however god did send me and if you listen you will see that god is the one that i am exemplifying i am making god the most important exonerating him and then when we believe if we are spiritually thirsty we will receive the holy spirit So for those of you who are listening here, you know that you have that Holy Spirit. You can feel God's Holy Spirit.
00:16:45
Speaker
It's kind of like when ah Mary, when she was still pregnant with Jesus, went to go see her cousin Elizabeth. And Elizabeth said, oh my gosh, when you came near me, the baby within me leaped with joy. ah my And the spirit that was in Jesus was causing that that movement.
00:17:08
Speaker
Both babies were blessed and had a job to do. And you can feel that same spirit within you. I know I can feel him as i as I read and talk to you about it now because this is God's spirit is something that we can feel.
00:17:25
Speaker
And he keeps us from ever having to have to seek after God and not feel like we have found him. However, we are still supposed to seek God with all of our heart and all of our mind and all of our soul and all of our strength so that we can make him and his kingdom the most important thing in our lives.
00:17:48
Speaker
And that is our daily application today.
00:17:53
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today and the the Holy Spirit within you is just bubbling over with joy today. And I hope that whatever time of the day you get around to hearing or watching this daily reading, the the rest of your day or evening is fantastic.
00:18:11
Speaker
I hope that you are filled with God's Holy Spirit and that you are so full of joy that you just can't contain it.
00:18:19
Speaker
ah and So thank you for joining me. I would ask that you consider clicking that light button and sharing this event so that we can spread the word about making God the most important one in everybody's lives.
00:18:31
Speaker
And to do that by reading God's word, hearing God's word. We want to spread the word about reading God's word. God's word is wonderful. It shows us everything we need to know to be equipped for the good work that he has given us to do.
00:18:48
Speaker
It encourages us teaches us, it comforts us. It gives us the reason for the hope that we have within us. And i I love that about God's word.
00:19:00
Speaker
So I hope that you are encouraged to share that so that others too will know the joy that is in you that you have from the Holy Spirit. We want everybody. Just like we read yesterday, God doesn't desire that anybody should be lost, but everybody should come to him, those who are called.
00:19:18
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today. And guess what? That's right. I will be here again tomorrow for our daily reading. but but So until then, have a great rest of your day.
