Welcome! Today is the seventh day of the Feast of Tabernacles in 2025, also known as the Feast of Tents or Sukkot.

Before we get started with our daily reading I want us to remember to celebrate The Joy of the Torah day! This is traditionally the day that Jewish people give thanks for God's Word as well as begin to read the entire Bible for the year! It is a common, communal goal to read the entire Bible every year, following the same schedule together! While I will not be reading the same schedule of the Bible I have a chronological study Bible from the New Living Translation that I intend to read this year, starting on Tuesday, The Joy of the Torah day! Please join with me and prepare to give thanks to God for giving us His Word on October 14, 2025.

If you would like to download my FREE calendar for keeping track of your commitment to read the Bible every day, you can find that on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/pages/read-the-bible-in-1-year

Monthly memberships to support this event can be purchased on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/offering_packages

Today's we will reading the Book of Acts Chapter 4:36-37 and all of Chapter 5.

Today we will read more about the community of believers looking out for one another and caring for one another the way that Jesus had taught them by selling their land and giving the money to the disciples so that no believers were in need of anything! We will also read about a particular couple who sold their property and said that they were giving all of the money that they had made from the sale to the disciples for distribution, but really, they had withheld some of the proceeds. The money was theirs to do with as they wished, so Peter asked them why they felt the need to lie to  God's Holy Spirit and say that they were donating the full sale value.  Before answering the question both the husband and wife died immediately for their sin!

We will also read more about the difficulty that the jealous religious leaders were giving the disciples for witnessing and teaching about Jesus by throwing some of the disciples into jail. The leaders were very surprised the next day to discover that the disciples were not in jail anymore (because an angel had released them and told them to go stand in the temple and teach the people about the New Life they could have have, which they were doing the next day when the leaders were looking for them. Among the leaders Gamaliel stood up and gave some great advice: he told the leaders to leave the disciples alone because they were either acting on their own beliefs or on God's authority and if the disciples were acting on God's authority then the leaders would be found to be working against God and there was nothing they would be able to do to stop the growing number of believers.

How right Gamaliel was! In our discussion for daily application we will remember that Jesus taught us that we will have troubles in this world but we are to take heart because HE HAS OVERCOME THE WORLD! We are on the winning side! There is nothing that can stop us from succeeding or the stop the number of people becoming believers of Jesus! So let's continue boldly witnessing and teaching people about Jesus, making followers for Him all over the world!

Welcome and Introduction to the Feast of Tabernacles

00:00:02
Speaker
Hello everybody! Welcome to the Daily Reading for October 13th through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. My name is Robin. I'm with In the Family Way Coaching and it is my pleasure to read to you this event.
00:00:18
Speaker
Today is also day seven of the Feast of Tabernacles. And I just wanted to remind us all that by the time you guys get around to being able to actually watch or view this video, since I'm not getting it out until after midnight here, it'll be technically on the 14th.

Celebrating the Joy of the Torah

00:00:36
Speaker
By the time you get to watch this, it will be day eight. And that is our Sabbath day of rest that God has given us after the Feast of Tabernacles. It is also the Jewish holiday for the joy of the Torah.
00:00:50
Speaker
The joy of the Torah. And the Torah is the law portion of God's Word. But really, it is a celebration of God giving us all of His Word.
00:01:01
Speaker
And guess what? In John 1.1, it tells us that in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And that is Jesus. We should be thanking God today for Jesus and for God's word.
00:01:17
Speaker
So if you are using your calendar, it's time to go ahead and get that out. Get your bookmark or bookmark your sticker ready or whatever you're using.
00:01:28
Speaker
This is your bookmark for but reading because we are about to read the Bible today.
00:01:37
Speaker
And I don't know about you, but I am super thankful for God's word. I am so thankful that there is actually a holiday for this now. i It's been around since about the 14th century, but nobody's ever told me about this holiday.
00:01:53
Speaker
i just found out about it this this month. I'd never heard of it before. So of course, I wanted to share that with all of you and encourage you to enjoy celebrating God's word.
00:02:04
Speaker
And that's part of this event is that we are trying to encourage people to spread the word about reading God's word. Yay, God's word! God's word is useful for everything, for teaching, for correction, and for um training us up, and for preparing us for all the good works that God has but in mind for us to do.

The Early Christian Community

00:02:30
Speaker
Well, we are going to begin our reading today and we're going to read the last two verses of Acts chapter 4 verses 36 and 37 and then we will head into chapter 5 of Acts.
00:02:43
Speaker
The last two verses of chapter 4 are not included in our Day by Day Kids Bible so I will be reading them to us from our Big Bible. It's part of the story but it just wasn't included.
00:02:57
Speaker
So this picks up, we saw yesterday that um everybody was was taking care of one another. Everybody was looking after one another and and they were sharing resources.
00:03:11
Speaker
And it says that um in verse 34, nobody was needy because everybody who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds and set them at the feet of the apostles.
00:03:25
Speaker
and then the proceeds were distributed according to the need that each one had. And we talked about being able to do that today, too, that we should be helping to provide for everybody who's in our body, our body of of Jesus, God's spiritual body.
00:03:43
Speaker
We are all part of one spiritual family. We are all brothers and sisters. And if you are in San Diego, I would like to encourage you. ah Julie, in case you don't know, she runs food ministry.
00:03:56
Speaker
I love that. she had they have She and her husband have Buckhart Ranch. And you can check that out at BuckhartRanch.org. That's B-U-C-K-H-E-A-R-T Ranch.org.
00:04:13
Speaker
And, um,
00:04:19
Speaker
You can donate there. They get food all the time and they run the food ministry and people head up to their ranch and they do food distribution. If you are local in San Diego, I also want to encourage you to take the time to volunteer.
00:04:34
Speaker
Julie always needs help sorting the food because they actually get quite a bit. And ah they are in need at the moment of a refrigerated truck and some other things.
00:04:45
Speaker
And if you would like to be part of helping to take care of God's people by feeding them or by supplying ah some other need that they may have, check that out and give as God leads you to do so.
00:05:01
Speaker
Well, we are gonna go ahead and get started with our reading now, or continue, I should say.

Generosity and Deceit: Barnabas and Ananias

00:05:06
Speaker
So ah in verse 36 then, it says that Joseph, also called Barnabas, which is translated son of the encouragement son of encouragement, was a Levite and he was a native of Cyprus.
00:05:22
Speaker
And he sold a field that he owned and brought the money and laid it at the feet of the disciples. On the other hand, a man named Ananias, together with his wife, Zephira, they sold a property.
00:05:45
Speaker
And they kept part of the money for themselves. But they didn't tell anybody else that they had kept some of it. They gave the rest of the money to the apostles.
00:05:57
Speaker
Ananias, said Peter, how did your heart get so full of Satan? You lied to the Holy Spirit. You kept some of the money for yourself.
00:06:11
Speaker
Now didn't the land and belong to you? asked Peter. And then you sold it and you could have done whatever you wanted with the money. So why did you need to lie?
00:06:22
Speaker
You haven't lied to people. You have lied to God. Then Ananias fell down, and he died. Everybody who heard about it was afraid. And some young men came and covered his body with a cloth called a shroud, and they took it out and they put him in a grave.
00:06:44
Speaker
Now three hours passed, and then Sapphira, his wife, came in, and she didn't know what had happened to her husband Ananias. Tell me something, asked Peter.
00:06:55
Speaker
Is this how much money you got for your land? Yes,

Apostles' Perseverance and Miracles

00:06:59
Speaker
said Saphira. That's how much we got. How could you and your husband plan this lie together?
00:07:07
Speaker
How could you test God's Holy Spirit? asked Peter. Some men are at the door and they just put your husband's body in a grave and they will carry your body out too.
00:07:20
Speaker
And then Saphira fell down at Peter's feet and she died. The young men came in and they put Sapphira's body in a grave next to her husband.
00:07:32
Speaker
Now all of Jesus' followers were afraid. And so was anyone else who heard about this, about what had happened. And the twelve apostles did lots of wonders.
00:07:43
Speaker
And all of Jesus' followers met together at the worship house. And they met at a place called Solomon's Walk. Nobody dared to meet with them as well, but people said good things about them.
00:07:56
Speaker
More and more people believed in Jesus. So people began to bring sick people out to the streets. They would lay them on mats and they would watch for Peter to walk by.
00:08:09
Speaker
And they hoped that just Peter's shadow would pass over some of the sick people.
00:08:15
Speaker
Crowds of people came from nearby towns and they brought sick people with them. They brought people who were bothered by bad spirits, All of the people got well.
00:08:29
Speaker
Now the high priest and his friends were mad. They wanted people to forget about Jesus and his friends. So they put the apostles in jail. But that night, an angel opened the jail doors and he brought the men out of jail.
00:08:47
Speaker
He said to them, Go on, stand in the yards of the worship house and tell the people all about the new life that they can have.
00:08:59
Speaker
So when morning came, the apostles went to the worship house and they started teaching the people again. Now the high priest and his friends got together. The other Jewish leaders were there too, the Sadducees.
00:09:12
Speaker
And they sent some men to the jail to go get the apostles. But the men couldn't find the apostles in jail, and the men went back to the high priest. The jail was locked tight with maximum security, they said, and guards were standing at the doors.
00:09:29
Speaker
So we opened the doors, but nobody was in there. Now the leaders couldn't figure it out, and they wondered what was going to happen next.
00:09:39
Speaker
And then somebody came in and said, Look at this. The people you put in jail are at the worship house again. And they're teaching the people there again. Then the captain of the worship house guards took some guards with him and they brought the apostles back.
00:09:56
Speaker
But they did not bring the apostles back with force. They treated the apostles nicely because they didn't want to be they because they were afraid of what the people might do to them.
00:10:09
Speaker
They took the apostles to the high priest. We told you not to teach anything more about Jesus, he said. But you are filling this city with your teaching.
00:10:20
Speaker
And you are blaming us for killing Jesus. We have to obey God and not men, said Peter and the others. God made Jesus come back to life.
00:10:33
Speaker
You had him killed on a cross, but God lifted him up to sit at his right side. and Jesus is the prince, said Peter. He saves us.
00:10:44
Speaker
He forgives our sins. We have seen these things happen. And the Holy Spirit shows us that these things are true. And God gives the Holy Spirit to people who obey him.
00:10:58
Speaker
Now the leaders were very angry to hear this, and they wanted to kill the apostles. They were jealous. But there was one leader named Gamaliel, and he was a Torah leader, a Torah teacher.
00:11:14
Speaker
Everybody looked up to him. He stood up, and he asked the apostles to step outside for a minute. And then Gamaliel talked to the other leaders.
00:11:25
Speaker
Think carefully about what you plan to do, said he he said. Do you remember Theodos? He said he was somebody important and and about 400 people followed him.
00:11:37
Speaker
But then Theodos was killed and his followers stopped making trouble for us. And then there was Judas from Galilee, said Gamaliel. And Judas led a group of people against us.
00:11:48
Speaker
And he was killed too and then all of his followers stopped making trouble for us. So I say we should just leave these men alone, Gamaliel said. And what if this teaching is just their idea?
00:12:02
Speaker
then they won't keep it up for long. But what if it is God's idea? Then you won't be able to stop them no matter what you do.
00:12:14
Speaker
And then you will be fighting God.
00:12:18
Speaker
Now what Gamaliel said made sense to the leaders. So they brought the apostles back in and they had some men just beat them. And the leaders told them not to talk about Jesus anymore.
00:12:32
Speaker
And then they let the men go. And the apostles were glad when they left. And they were glad to be good enough to go through all of this. They were glad to do it for for the name of Jesus.
00:12:46
Speaker
Every day they went to the worship house. And they went to people's houses too. And they kept teaching the good news about Jesus. And the number of followers kept growing and growing.
00:13:01
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:13:06
Speaker
Wasn't that an exciting reading today? and don't think we've had such an exciting reading in a while.
00:13:13
Speaker
What was your favorite part? Did you like the part where Ananias and his wife, Zephira, were just suddenly falling dead after they were found lying? Or did you like that the angel came and opened up the gate and let them out and nobody knew it?
00:13:31
Speaker
They were just out and the the door was still locked and they couldn't figure out what was going on.
00:13:39
Speaker
and Or was your favorite part, the part about, when with Gamaliel, where he advised the leaders that if this was of God, then it was not they were not going to be able to win no matter what.
00:13:54
Speaker
And then they kept fighting against them, they would be fighting against God.

The Importance of Honesty

00:14:00
Speaker
I think that was my favorite part. We have a couple of things for our daily application today, don't we?
00:14:08
Speaker
Well, our first thing is that Peter pointed out that the money that Ananias and Sapphira had made from the sale of their house or their land rather was theirs and they could do whatever they wanted with it.
00:14:22
Speaker
went They could sell it. They didn't have to sell it, but they chose to. And when they got the money, they could have kept part of it if they wanted to. It was their money. But instead they were prideful.
00:14:35
Speaker
They were telling the disciples that this was all the money and they were giving all of it. And so they were really lying, not to men, but to God, to God's Holy Spirit.
00:14:49
Speaker
And so that's very important for us to remember too, that when we think we are lying to people, we are really lying to God. And so that really puts our sin into a different light, doesn't it?
00:15:03
Speaker
if we don't think about it in terms of just a people, it turns out we're actually sinning against God. That's a much more serious thing. We think, oh, it's no big deal. I'll just lie about this.
00:15:16
Speaker
But Peter shows us and the Holy Spirit convicted Ananias and Sapphira by killing them right on the spot. That doesn't happen. I know we've got that saying that says, oh, if this were not true, may God strike me down dead.
00:15:31
Speaker
And, you know, it's almost too bad that doesn't happen more often because then people would be afraid and have consequence of the consequence of it. It doesn't seem like that happens like it used to.
00:15:43
Speaker
But in this case, the the the faith was new in terms of believing in Jesus. And so it was very important that they had a good start. So I think that that is why God was very particular about the the punishment as soon as they were caught lying to the Holy Spirit.
00:16:02
Speaker
Because it must have been the Holy Spirit who revealed this to Peter so that he would ask them about it and give them a chance to tell the truth. He gave them the chance to tell the truth. And they chose to lie.
00:16:16
Speaker
ah So let us make our own choice to remember Ananias and Sapphira when we are tempted to lie about something to somebody thinking, oh, well, nobody will know. but And let us remember that we are really lying to God and his Holy Spirit.
00:16:32
Speaker
And let's not do that.
00:16:35
Speaker
Well, our next daily application that we have for us today is to remember that Jesus taught us that there will be troubles in this world. That's exactly what the disciples were experiencing today.
00:16:48
Speaker
But he said to take heart, for he has overcome the world. So Gamaliel was absolutely correct. He said if this was just their idea, it would peter out.
00:16:59
Speaker
No, with the that's a pun intended there. But it didn't. He said that if this is of God, we won't you won't be able to stop it no matter what you do.
00:17:13
Speaker
And then you will be found fighting against God.
00:17:18
Speaker
So let's remember that we are on the winning side. Don't worry about people who give us a hard time. And if we get in trouble for speaking out and and speaking for Jesus, because we are on the winning side.
00:17:35
Speaker
Jesus has overcome the world. There is nothing anybody can do to stop the growth of believers believing in Jesus's name.
00:17:47
Speaker
Isn't that wonderful? We are just meant to do what we are supposed to do. And we are supposed to teach people about God and Jesus. And not everybody will come to believe.
00:17:59
Speaker
Not everybody is called, but it's our job to to talk to people, to be God's witnesses, And then to go and to make followers, to tell people, and while we may not win everybody, there are many that God has placed into our path.
00:18:14
Speaker
And one of the ways that Jesus said is is that we are to pray for workers in the field. He said, the fields are ripe for harvest. People

Sharing and Thanksgiving

00:18:24
Speaker
are ready. Maybe not everybody wants to be a believer and not everybody may be called, but there are so many who do.
00:18:31
Speaker
Let's remember those people. And let's remember to take care of each other, to look out for one another, to love one another. Because this is also very important as we see here today that the proceeds that people were using, ah they were so they were taking care of one another. They were selling their property to make sure that people had enough of everything.
00:18:56
Speaker
And we don't really do that so much today, but but you know we don't have to sell land. But there are other things we can donate, we can share with others. And it has the same effect, whether we are giving something that we have to somebody else to share with what God has given us. Because we talked about yesterday too, every single thing we have comes from God.
00:19:20
Speaker
And one of the ways that our our big Bible puts it yesterday is that nobody said anything was just theirs. they They shared everything in community.
00:19:32
Speaker
How awesome that would be if we could remember that nothing we have belongs strictly to us and that we really are all a community so that we will be open hearted to share and anything and everything that we have, no matter what it is with those around us.
00:19:54
Speaker
That would be wonderful. I know we do some of that, but let's do it deliberately, shall we? That's part of our daily application today is to remember to look out for other people with honesty and and also to remember because we are on the winning side.
00:20:13
Speaker
Jesus has overcome the world. Amen. Hallelujah. Well, I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today. I know I do feel that he has lit my light today on this, uh, final day of the Feast of Tabernacles.
00:20:29
Speaker
And now it will be, ah by the time you get around to watching, and I will remind this on our, and our, neck on our October 14th video as well. Um, to have our day for celebrating and being thankful for God's word being given to us so that we can learn about all of these things.
00:20:48
Speaker
God's word teaches us. ity It is Jesus's words ah written down by those who were there. And then also by people who taught about it in the beginning. And these are great ways to learn about Jesus.
00:21:02
Speaker
And they teach us how to follow him. because they were more closely, it you know, right there with it. And that's what we want to do is we want to spread the word about reading God's word so that other people can also be encouraged and to learn about Jesus's teaching, especially since we are commanded to do so.
00:21:24
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today as you are faithfully obeying God by learning about him and about Jesus and learning how to obey him and making him the most important one in your life this year and all the years, but learning how to do that this year.
00:21:41
Speaker
So thank you for joining me, whether you are following along on your podcast or whether you are watching the video. I'm so glad that you are enjoying this event. And if you have not done so already, be encouraged to click your subscribe button.
00:21:53
Speaker
And always let's share this event with others. It's never too late for people to start learning and listening and hearing about God's word. And ah we will have, of course, this these questions.
00:22:06
Speaker
Recordings will be available so that anybody who's missed from the beginning of the year, you may be encouraged to start it back at the beginning of the year in January, which is coming up in just three short months.
00:22:18
Speaker
So it will be there for you. And it's so it's perfectly okay to get started now and then to pick it up again to hear the beginning. This event is is a chronological reading of the Bible. So we get the entire big story all the way from Genesis to Revelation.
00:22:35
Speaker
And it is a wonderful story. It is the best story. And it is real. It's not just a fictional story. This is a true story. is God's truth.
00:22:47
Speaker
So have a fantastic rest of your day. And I will see you tomorrow for our next daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Endley. Have a very blessed day.
