Today's reading will cover the Book of Luke Chapters 16:20-31 and 17:20-37.

Today we will be learning about the importance of choosing to follow God rather than the riches of the world, such as feeling important in the world or having a lot of money, because we cannot love both God AND these worldly things. Jesus will teach us today that we need to not only be aware of God's ways, but follow God's ways because they lead to REAL life. With the time that we are here we need to use what God gives us to further His Kingdom. We will also learn that the Kingdom of God is not something we can LOOK for, it is INSIDE US and THIS IS THE GOOD NEWS OF GOD'S KINGDOM! WE ARE GOD'S KINGDOM and we need to be using what resources God gives us for helping to add to its numbers as well as provide for those who have need. Using the resources that God gives us to do these things will show that we know how to handle what has been given to us so that God will give us more to manage which will allow us to further God's Kingdom even more! Failing to love God or follow God's loving ways or  being selfish with what we have been given will result in a very uncomfortable after-life; rather than being welcomed into God's Heaven we will spend eternity in hell. This is what is meant when Jesus taught us that we will have chosen to "save our life only to lose it." Let us choose eternal life and build up our treasures in Heaven rather than be concerned about our earthly comfort, which is only temporary. Play the long game.

00:01:33
Speaker
Today we have a lot to cover and it can be a little bit confusing and it can be tough sometimes to try to figure out what is our daily application.

Focus on the Big Picture

00:01:45
Speaker
Well, in this Bible, we are looking at the big picture. Sometimes we look in close and we see what God is telling us. But today we are going to be using a lot of information today.
00:01:58
Speaker
And instead of looking at every individual piece of information, we will get the big picture. We will connect all of our dots together and put all of our puzzle pieces in, and they are all related.
00:02:11
Speaker
So let us open up the Bible to today.

Key Readings from Luke 16-17

00:02:15
Speaker
Today's reading is going to come to us from chapter 16 of Luke. And if you are hungry for more of God's word, head up the description if you need to know exactly what we're reading.
00:02:28
Speaker
It also encompasses some of Luke chapter 17 in verses 20 37. in verses twenty to thirty seven So here we go. Now, this first story can be a little bit confusing, and we are going to talk about that when we get done reading.
00:02:44
Speaker
And we're also going to insert a little bit of what is not included in our regular reading. So Jedi, if you are following along, you're going to find that I am ah adding some additional words, and it's because I am getting them from our big Bible.
00:03:00
Speaker
Our first story is entitled, Little and a Lot.

Parables and Teachings of Jesus

00:03:06
Speaker
There once was a rich man, said Jesus. He heard something about the man in charge of his business. And he heard that this man was using up his money.
00:03:18
Speaker
So the rich man called in his worker and said, what's this I hear about you? Tell me what you're doing with my money. If you are using it up, then you cannot be in charge.
00:03:30
Speaker
Now the worker was worried. He thought to himself, oh, what will I do now? My boss will take my job away and I'm not strong enough to dig and I'm too proud. i would feel bad about having to beg for food and I know what I will do.
00:03:48
Speaker
I will make friends with the people who owe my boss money, and I'm going to lose my job anyways, but these people will let me come into their houses after I have made friends with them.
00:04:01
Speaker
So the worker called in the first man, and he said, how much money do you owe my boss? And the man said, I owe him 800 jugs of olive oil. So the worker told him, take your bill and change it.
00:04:16
Speaker
Make it just 400 jugs. So the worker asked another man, how much do you owe? And the man said, I owe ah thousand baskets of wheat.
00:04:30
Speaker
So the worker told him, take your bill and change it. Make it just 800 baskets of wheat. Now the boss saw what the worker had done and he actually said it was a very witty or shrewd thing to have done.
00:04:48
Speaker
It was a witty idea. And he said that the worker had actually been wise to do this. Worldly people are wise when they deal with other worldly people.
00:05:02
Speaker
And they are wiser than God's people when dealing with the world. So Jesus said, use worldly money to get friends because someday the money will run out, but you will have friends in heaven.
00:05:18
Speaker
And we're going to talk about what that means a little bit later.
00:05:23
Speaker
Now, what happens when you can be trusted with a little? Then you can be trusted with a lot, said Jesus. And what happens when you cannot be trusted with a little?
00:05:36
Speaker
Well, then you cannot be trusted with a lot. What if people can't trust you with worldly riches? Do you think that you will be trusted with heaven's riches?
00:05:48
Speaker
What if people cannot trust you with things that belong to them? Do you think you will get things of your own?
00:05:59
Speaker
going to read from the big Bible here. No servant can serve two masters for either. He will hate the one and love the other, or he will stick by one and look down on the other.
00:06:12
Speaker
You cannot serve both God and money.
00:06:17
Speaker
Now the Pharisees who were lovers of money were listening to all these things.
00:06:27
Speaker
And Jesus talked to the leaders of the people. You try to make people think that you are always right. But God knows what is in your hearts.
00:06:39
Speaker
People may think you're special, but that is what, but what is special to people is not special to God.
00:06:52
Speaker
Now, the law and the prophets were proclaimed until John. and And since then, the good news of the kingdom of God is being proclaimed, said Jesus. And everyone tries forcing his way in.
00:07:06
Speaker
But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for even a single mark of the law to far to fail.
00:07:18
Speaker
We're going to talk about that too.
00:07:22
Speaker
Once there was a rich man, said Jesus. He wore fine purple clothes and he had everything he wanted. there was a beggar man named Lazarus and he was set at his gate.
00:07:36
Speaker
Now Lazarus even had hurt places all over his body and dogs would come and lick his hurt places. And Lazarus was hungry too. and little bits of food would fall off of the rich man's table. And ah Lazarus would have loved to have eaten those bits.
00:07:57
Speaker
And one day Lazarus died. Angels came and got him. And they took Lazarus to sit by Abraham. Sometime later, the rich man also died.
00:08:10
Speaker
But he did not get welcomed. He was taken to hell. And he felt terrible there and he hurt all over. the rich man looked up and he saw Abraham far away.
00:08:27
Speaker
And Lazarus was sitting there beside him. So the rich man called out to Abraham, Father Abraham, he cried, be kind to me and tell Lazarus to just dip his finger in water.
00:08:44
Speaker
and then send him here to cool my mouth with the water. All of this fire is too much for me. But Abraham said to him, Remember the way that you lived?
00:08:58
Speaker
You got your good things on earth and Lazarus got bad things. But now he is feeling good and you are not. Abraham went on.
00:09:10
Speaker
Even if Lazarus wanted to come, he couldn't because there is a big space between us, you and me. Nobody can cross from us to you and nobody can cross from you to us.
00:09:26
Speaker
But the rich man begged, then please send Lazarus to my brothers. There are five of them, and please ask Lazarus to tell them what happened to me, and maybe then they won't have to come to this fearful place.
00:09:41
Speaker
But Abraham answered him, They know the law. They know what the prophet said, so they should already know how to live. But the rich man said, They don't listen to the law, but they do know Lazarus is dead, and if he went to see them, they would change.
00:10:02
Speaker
But Abraham told the rich man, your brothers don't listen to the law and they don't listen to the prophets. So they will not believe anybody, even if somebody comes back from the dead to tell them something.
00:10:19
Speaker
Like lightning. One time there were some Jewish leaders who came to Jesus and they asked when the kingdom of God would come. Watching for God's kingdom will not make it come, said Jesus.
00:10:35
Speaker
People won't say, oh, here it is. And they won't say, oh, there it is. And that is because God's kingdom is inside people.

Understanding the Kingdom of God

00:10:48
Speaker
Then Jesus talked to his followers. One of these days you will wish that I was here with you, but you won't see me. People may say, oh, there he is.
00:10:59
Speaker
They might say, oh, here he is. But do not follow them. When I come back, it will be like a flash of lightning and I will light up the whole sky.
00:11:12
Speaker
Before that, I will go through a lot of pain and people will not believe me. And it will be like the time when Noah lived. People ate and drank while Noah went into the ark and they thought it was a day like any other day.
00:11:28
Speaker
Then the flood came and it got rid of all of them. and The same thing happened when Lot lived, said Jesus. People were eating and drinking. They bought things. They sold things. They planted fields.
00:11:40
Speaker
They built buildings. But when Lot left that city of Sodom, fire came down from heaven and it got rid of all of them. People will be living like this when I come back.
00:11:55
Speaker
What if a man is up on his roof when I come? All his things are inside of his house and he should not try to run back inside to get his things.
00:12:06
Speaker
People may be at work in their fields, said Jesus, and they should not try to go home to get things. Remember Lot's wife? People trying to hold on to life will give up real life.
00:12:23
Speaker
People who give up their life for me will have real life.
00:12:31
Speaker
When I come, two people may be in one bed and one will go with me, said Jesus, and the other will be left behind. Two women may be making grain into flour and one will go with me and the other will be left behind.
00:12:48
Speaker
When will this happen? Asked Jesus's friends. Well, think about it, said Jesus. The wild birds come wherever there is something dead.
00:13:02
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:13:09
Speaker
Because we just finished that section, i'm going to give us a little bit of insight into that. So what Jesus is referring to there when he says, the When the wild birds come, whenever there is something dead.
00:13:22
Speaker
Jesus is talking about,
00:13:28
Speaker
let's see.
00:13:34
Speaker
Where there is a corpse, there also will the vultures be gathered. That's how our big Bible tells us. So this is actually a reference to Ezekiel 17.
00:13:47
Speaker
I'm sorry, Ezekiel chapter 39 verses 17 through 20. And we are going to read that.
00:14:00
Speaker
It is also a reference to the final event that Ezekiel 39 is referring to. And that is referenced in Revelation chapter 19 verses 17 and 18.
00:14:13
Speaker
So this is talking about the time of judgment. Jesus is telling them that he will come back at the time of judgment. And when God was speaking to Ezekiel, he told Ezekiel to say to every kind of bird and to every beast of the field, assemble and come, gather from all around to my sacrificial feast that I have prepared for you.
00:14:40
Speaker
A great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. You will eat flesh and drink blood. You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as rams, lambs, goats and bulls, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
00:14:58
Speaker
So you will eat fat until you are gorged and you will drink blood until you are drunk from my sacrificial feast that I have prepared for you. And you will be filled at my table with horses and horsemen, with mighty men and all the warriors.
00:15:13
Speaker
It is a declaration of the Lord.
00:15:17
Speaker
So this is referring to, again, in Revelation chapter 19, where the time of judgment comes.
00:15:31
Speaker
And that is when he tells us in verses 17 through 18, this is during the final battle of the age.
00:15:44
Speaker
John says that I saw a single angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he cried out to all the birds flying high in the sky, Come, gather for the great banquet of God, to eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of generals, and the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and those riding on them, the flesh of all men both free and slave, both small and great.
00:16:10
Speaker
Also, I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the one who sat on the horse and against his army.
00:16:22
Speaker
And this is talking about the great battle at the end of the age. So that is what Jesus is telling them is that the time will come when it is time for the great battle to happen for judgment against those who have continuously refused to choose God and to follow him.
00:16:41
Speaker
So let's go back to the beginning and look at a little and a lot we saw that there was a worker who was what we would call misappropriating or mismanaging the funds.
00:16:55
Speaker
And in order to make allies, to make friends for himself, he lowered the debts of what these people owed him so that then when he was fired, he would have a place to to go seek.
00:17:10
Speaker
He would have a place to stay, it says. He would have friends. And here ah Jesus says that the boss actually saw that what he did was a ah pretty wise move because he was setting himself up ah in order to at least have like a backup plan because he knew he had done wrong.
00:17:29
Speaker
And Jesus tells us that those who are of the world are actually pretty shrewd, pretty wise in dealing with other people of the world. And he says that to go ahead and use money to make friends because someday the money will be gone, but you will have friends in heaven.
00:17:48
Speaker
So what is he talking about here? Well, everything comes from God. So we need to use the money that we are given to further God's kingdom.
00:18:01
Speaker
And the money will eventually run out, but those same people will welcome us in heaven. because we have used the funds to help bring people to God's kingdom.
00:18:14
Speaker
Now we're going to answer the question, where is God's kingdom? When will it come? that The Pharisees were asking. And Jesus says, it's not a time to come. it It's not something you can see because the kingdom of God is in us now.
00:18:30
Speaker
the good news of God's kingdom. We read here that Jesus told us, I took that out of our big Bible because it wasn't included in in our other version here.
00:18:43
Speaker
And Jesus tells us that, let's see,
00:18:57
Speaker
that the kingdom of God is in our midst.
00:19:05
Speaker
In chapter 16, verse 16, Jesus says that, Since that the, it says the Torah and the prophets, the law and the prophets were proclaimed until John.
00:19:16
Speaker
John who? John the Baptist. Since then, now we have the good news of the kingdom of God is being proclaimed. So I thought this was very important, actually, that the kingdom of God is within us.
00:19:31
Speaker
And this is the good news of the kingdom of God. God has sent us his Holy Spirit, which means that we have now become the temple because our God dwells with us. He is in us and the kingdom of God is with us. It exists within us.
00:19:51
Speaker
That is a very important thing. We don't think about that. We have the full force of the kingdom of heaven within us. We have the ability to to do what would be considered impossible, not because we ourselves, but because the kingdom of God is within us.
00:20:08
Speaker
And so before this time, we had only the Torah, the law and the prophets to teach us what was right. But now we have the good news of God's kingdom.
00:20:20
Speaker
So this is something that we should be letting other people know about. It's not just going to heaven and hell. It's that there is a lot that comes along with this.
00:20:30
Speaker
God makes a relationship with us. He puts his spirit within us. And we have the kingdom of heaven with us. That's very important.
00:20:42
Speaker
So it's not something where we can say, well, when does God's kingdom come? Jesus says it's not something that can be seen. it it is it exists within us. So if people are saying, oh, it's over here or or it's over there, that is not true.
00:20:57
Speaker
So we need to be sure that we are um knowing what is right and what is wrong to know that that is not the case.

Faith and Responsibility

00:21:06
Speaker
Same thing when Jesus comes again, he will not be here or there. he says, when I come, everybody will know it.
00:21:14
Speaker
So let's first, before we go forward there, let's look here and at our big picture. So we know that the kingdom of heaven is with us.
00:21:26
Speaker
And we look at Lazarus and the story of Lazarus and the rich man. And we know how to live. So there will always be those people that no matter what, we've talked about this, that they simply will not believe.
00:21:40
Speaker
They are not one of God's sheep. They are not part of the kingdom. They cannot see. They cannot hear. And it doesn't matter even if they had somebody coming back from the dead to stand before them and say, you are wrong.
00:21:53
Speaker
i exist. Jesus will tell us later when Thomas, what we call doubting Thomas, at first he said, I'm not going to believe it until I see it and put my fingers in the pierced parts where he was pierced.
00:22:05
Speaker
Jesus allowed him to do it. And he said, you have believed because you have seen, but blessed are those who believe who have not seen. It is up to us to tell this good news of God's kingdom.
00:22:18
Speaker
That God's kingdom is near. It is with us. God's kingdom has arrived on earth within us when we choose to accept that Jesus was sent by God.
00:22:32
Speaker
Now, as we are given things in this world to to go forward and to benefit the kingdom of heaven and to help bring other people into God's kingdom,
00:22:46
Speaker
Jesus warns us that we need to be responsible with the things that God gives us. Because we read in the Proverbs that even a child is known by their doings. We are all known by our fruit. We are known by our behavior.
00:22:59
Speaker
And we are known that if we cannot be responsible with things that are little, that belong to other people, we're not going to be given our own responsibilities of things. We need to be responsible.
00:23:12
Speaker
So like you, Diamond and Jedi and Forest and Pearl, everything that you have belongs to your parents and they are teaching you how to treat things. They are teaching you how to take care of things.
00:23:26
Speaker
And then eventually you will have your own things and then you will know how to take care of them. But if you never learn how to take care of things properly, It doesn't stand to reason that you will be given your own things as well. You may acquire your own things, and we all know people who acquire things and then simply just never take care of them.
00:23:44
Speaker
And if you look, they don't take care of the things that belong to other people either. They don't have a sense of responsibility. They are not being good stewards, we would say, of what has been entrusted to them.
00:24:01
Speaker
They're squandering it. They're wasting it. They're misusing it. They're abusing it. They're breaking it. ah We used to have a saying that says, well, we can't have nice things because you break them.
00:24:11
Speaker
And now Taylor Swift has taken that and put it into a song. This is why we can't have nice things because you break them. Mm-hmm.
00:24:24
Speaker
I've had that song in my head all morning now. If we break the things and we don't treat the things properly that don't belong to us, God is not going to give us more things to be entrusted with.
00:24:37
Speaker
So we have to take care of things. What is the goal? Is that we need to be able to further the kingdom of heaven with whatever he has given us.
00:24:47
Speaker
He gives us food. So we should be taking care to feed those who don't have as much. Look at the rich man in Lazarus. We know the the way to behave.
00:25:00
Speaker
And the thing is, is God gives us free will. He wants us to choose to do the right thing. And it's very frustrating when we don't. We have rules and laws, and we have a lot of these rules and laws because we simply don't choose to do things that are right of our own free will and choice.
00:25:20
Speaker
So now we have laws in in effect for everywhere that tell us how fast we can drive our cars. We have laws that say you cannot steal or you will go to jail.
00:25:30
Speaker
ah We have laws that say you can't do this, you can't do that. Who can own this? Who can own that? And the reason that we have these rules is because people don't just choose to do the right thing.
00:25:45
Speaker
It's been like this from the very beginning. We have to be able to be self-controlled and self-disciplined, which are fruits of the Holy Spirit, self-control, and be able to choose is to do what is right.
00:25:59
Speaker
And God says that we know already what is right to do. And Jesus says, everybody's trying to get into heaven. But it still involves following God's rules.
00:26:12
Speaker
And since God told us that we are to listen to Jesus, we need to trust that those rules are still in effect. Now there we have the pharisaical rules, which are the rules like hand washing and whatnot, that those are not applicable.
00:26:27
Speaker
um And they shouldn't be applicable to anybody, really. ah They're just man-made laws. But we're looking at the rules that God has given us, which Jesus tells us can be summed up. By loving God with all of our heart, and all of our mind, and all of our soul.
00:26:42
Speaker
And by loving others. And we also read today that you cannot serve both God and money. What is important to God is not the same things as what we think are important to us.

Warnings Against Worldly Values

00:26:54
Speaker
And we need to make what is important to God what is important to us.
00:26:58
Speaker
Because things like accumulating material wealth and accumulating possessions, wanting, wanting, wanting, are not what's important to God. What's important to God is to further his kingdom, to love him. And if we are truly loving him with our heart, then we will be motivated to love others because we can't be two people.
00:27:21
Speaker
We can't serve two masters. We can't say, oh, I love God very much. That is what the people were doing, the Pharisees. They were saying that they loved God and they were worshiping God with their lips, but they were lovers of money.
00:27:34
Speaker
So Jesus was talking to them and saying, you can't love both God and money. They loved money, but they were not loving God. They were supposed to be loving the people. And instead they were busy creating barriers to God for the people.
00:27:49
Speaker
They were trying to make everybody think that they were important. And Jesus came to show us that it is God who is important, but God is magnifying Jesus and making him important.
00:28:01
Speaker
So we are not to make ourselves important. It is God who will make us important or not, not us. And so we need to be responsible with the things that God has given us to use them wisely. And then as we do so, more will be given to us.
00:28:17
Speaker
More will be entrusted to us. Not because we are rewarded, but because we are showing that we are responsible with what God has given us and that our true heart lies in using the things that God has given us to further the kingdom of God.
00:28:35
Speaker
And that is important to God.
00:28:39
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that you understand today's reading. And oh, we want to continue. Sorry about that. We got a little bit more. So let's talk about when Jesus says that when he comes back, there will be people who try to go and get things.
00:28:53
Speaker
Now, can we take anything with us when we die? No. So too, will we not be... ah taking anything with us when God calls us in the rapture.
00:29:04
Speaker
That is what we are going to be celebrating with the but ah blasting of the shofar next week on Tuesday, the 23rd. We are celebrating the feast of the blasting of the shofar.
00:29:15
Speaker
And that is a holiday that is meant to be taken off of work, according to the Bible. So I just want to let us know that that day is coming to make our plans ahead of time in our hearts. That next week on, at least in 2025, it falls the 23rd.

the twenty third ah There's also around that time, like right before, we also it's been kind of now celebrated as the Jewish New Year. That's not a biblical holiday. That's not ah required.
00:29:40
Speaker
But ah we are meant to celebrate the blast of the Shafar, the blowing of the Shafar, the trumpets, because this is representative of when that time that Jesus comes.
00:29:53
Speaker
that time when he comes and and two men may be together and one will be taken and the other will not. If people are concerned about, oh, it's time to go. I need to run back in and grab some material items.
00:30:08
Speaker
To do what? What are you going to do with those things? But what it does is it shows where our heart is. We are thinking about where our heart is.

Discussion on Rapture and Judgment

00:30:17
Speaker
We cannot serve both God and money.
00:30:19
Speaker
Instead of thinking about, oh, I better grab some things. that shows that what that is not where our heart is. Our heart needs to be The time has come. God is calling us.
00:30:30
Speaker
Woohoo. my gosh, I can't believe this is it. And then be prepared to be received. It is not, oh my gosh, I need to grab ah whatever it is I need to grab. i need to get my passport, driver's license, my social security card.
00:30:44
Speaker
Well, they certainly won't let me in without proper identification. So do be sure and grab your ah proper identification if you want to be entered into the kingdom of heaven. didn Denied, I'm sorry, did you bring your birth certificate? do you have three witnesses claiming that this is who you are?
00:30:57
Speaker
No, that is not going to happen. It is not important to be concerned about things. And God knows our hearts, just like Jesus is telling the Pharisees that God knows their hearts.
00:31:11
Speaker
They were loving money more than they were loving God. They were loving things. They wanted to be thought of as important. These things are not important to God. And so those who are well off and considering those things now and living in luxury and not doing anything to further the kingdom of God, Jesus tells us that in the second life, when we have eternal life, their eternal existence will be spent in a very unhappy, uncomfortable place.
00:31:41
Speaker
Whereas those who have perhaps had little or who have loved God rather than money, they will be celebrating at the banquet at Abraham's table.
00:31:52
Speaker
And that is our real life, Jesus tells us in today's reading. That those who are looking to save their life will lose their real life. But those who give up their physical life will gain real life, true life.
00:32:11
Speaker
Because Jesus is the way. He is the truth. He is the light.
00:32:20
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that in all of our reading today, you see the big picture and that you feel that God has lit your light today so that you have something to share with people today. i mentioned one other time, I'm going to mention it again, that God puts people into our lives.
00:32:36
Speaker
And when people say, how are you today? This is your opening line for you to be able to say, I am fabulous. I read, ah i heard I heard the Bible today and it really made me think about this.
00:32:48
Speaker
And then you can share with people what it is that God puts on your heart to share. The Holy Spirit will open your mouth. So it is my prayer today. that God put somebody in your path today and that the Holy Spirit opens up your mouth and speaks to the people that he puts in your path and that you are bold enough to open and have that conversation, to start that conversation because we do have free will.
00:33:14
Speaker
So I pray that you will choose to use your free will to have a conversation with somebody today about what you learned today about the kingdom of God being within us. that we are the kingdom of heaven, that it has come.
00:33:29
Speaker
This is the good news of God's kingdom. And it is here courtesy of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who saved us from our sin and separation from God by being God's son and coming to give us eternal life.
00:33:46
Speaker
