If you would like to download my FREE calendar for keeping track of your commitment to read the Bible every day, you can find that on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/pages/read-the-bible-in-1-year

Monthly memberships to support this event can be purchased on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/offering_packages

Today's reading we will cover Luke Chapter 8:1-3, and Chapter 11:24-32, 37-46, and 52, Matthew Chapter 12:22-50, and Mark Chapter 3:20-35.

Today' we will read about Jesus telling the Pharisees how sad it will be for them at the day of judgment because they were following many man made rules but neglecting loving God and being kind to people and in doing this, they were also keeping the people from knowing how to love and follow God. Jesus told them that they needed to love God and be kind to others first and THEN be concerned about giving a tenth of everything they owned.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how God wants our HEART. Good works are important, but it is essential, as Jesus taught us today, that we love God first and then the Holy Spirit will prompt us to do the good works God has prepared for us to do. Being a believer in God means loving God first and obedience will follow.

Jesus and Pharisees: Allegiance and Miracles

00:02:19
Speaker
Every day.
00:02:22
Speaker
So today we are going to be picking up in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. We are going to be reading those books for at least another month. Well, for just another month about.
00:02:33
Speaker
little over a month. And today's section, our first section, is entitled Wanting a Sign. Now, this is one continuous kind of ah event that's been going on, meaning that there's been no time lapse since we've been reading about when Jesus ah told the Pharisees that they were a pack of snakes and that if you are not with me, you are against me.
00:02:58
Speaker
And you can choose to work with me. And if you don't, then you choose to work against me. So as he just finished saying that, now we are going to...
00:03:09
Speaker
come into this reading today. Now some Jewish leaders and teachers came to Jesus and they said, we want to see you do a wonder.
00:03:20
Speaker
They were looking for a sign. It will be like a sign to us. They wanted him to do a miracle. Only sinful people ask for a wonder, said Jesus, and the only sign that they will see is the sign of Jonah.
00:03:36
Speaker
Jonah spent three days inside the belly of a big fish, and in the same way, I will spend three days and nights in the earth.
00:03:47
Speaker
Someday people from Judah's time will be with the people of today. Jonah's time will be with the people of today. And it will happen when God judges everyone, said Jesus.
00:04:00
Speaker
Then they will blame the people of today for what they have done.

True Family and Internal Righteousness

00:04:05
Speaker
People from Nineveh heard what Jonah said and they were sorry for what they had done.
00:04:10
Speaker
They stopped doing bad things. But someone more important than Jonah is here now.
00:04:17
Speaker
And what Jesus meant is that they were not listening to him and he was more important than Jonah. The queen of Sheba will be with the people of today. It will happen when God judges everyone.
00:04:30
Speaker
Then she will blame the people of to- today for what they have done, he said. She came from far away and she listened to Solomon. She heard the wise things he said.
00:04:42
Speaker
But someone more important than Solomon is here now A bad spirit comes out of a person, said Jesus, and then it goes through dry places.
00:04:54
Speaker
It tries to find a place to stay, but it might not find a place to stay. So it says, I'll go back to the place that I left. Now, what if the place it left is empty, said Jesus?
00:05:07
Speaker
Then this spirit will go and get seven other spirits, and they are even more sinful. They go and live in the person, and then that person is in even bigger trouble than he was before.
00:05:22
Speaker
That's how it's going to be with these sinful people. There was a woman in the crowd, and she called out to Jesus, God will be good to the mother who has you for a son.
00:05:36
Speaker
but Jesus turned to her and said, God will be good to people who hear and obey God, he said.
00:05:44
Speaker
ah Jesus was talking to the people and Jesus' own mother and brothers came and stood outside. They wanted to talk to Jesus. So someone went in and told Jesus, your brothers are outside.
00:05:57
Speaker
They want to talk to you. Jesus pointed to his followers and said, here is my family. My father is in heaven and people who do what my father wants are my brothers, my sisters, and my mother.
00:06:17
Speaker
The cup and the dish. Now one of the Jewish leaders asked Jesus to eat with him. So Jesus went. Jesus did not wash the same way the leader did before he ate his meal.
00:06:31
Speaker
And that surprised the leader. Jesus said, you leaders are like a cup and a dish. You clean the cup and dish only on the outside, but inside yourselves, you are sinful.
00:06:45
Speaker
That's foolish. God made you on the outside, but he also made you on the inside. Give what you can to the poor and then you will really be clean.
00:06:59
Speaker
How sad it will be for you leaders, said Jesus. You give God a small part of what you earn and you even give him one out of every 10 plants in the garden.
00:07:10
Speaker
But you don't think about what is right. You don't think about God's love. You should think about fairness and about loving God.
00:07:21
Speaker
Then think about giving one out of every ten pieces of your money too. How sad it will be for you leaders, said Jesus. You want to sit at the most important places.
00:07:34
Speaker
You want people to think that you are the most important people. How sad it will be for you, said Jesus. You are like graves that are not marked with stones and people walk over them without even knowing it.
00:07:51
Speaker
Now, one of these men knew a lot about the law and he talked to Jesus. Teacher, we feel put down when you say these things.
00:08:03
Speaker
You know a lot about the law, said Jesus, and it will be sad for you because you give all kinds of laws, and it's very hard for people to do them all, and you won't even lift a finger to help them.
00:08:17
Speaker
How sad for you who know about God's laws, said Jesus. It's like you took away a key. It's the key to knowing. You don't try to learn and know, and you don't let other people learn and know.
00:08:35
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Heartfelt Devotion Over Rituals

00:08:40
Speaker
Wow. Jesus had a lot to say today, didn't he? About the inside versus the outside. Now, if you've been reading the Bible with me for a while, can you tell me?
00:08:52
Speaker
Does God care about actions? making Or does he care more about the heart? That's right, the heart. So Jesus told that the Pharisees today, the Pharisees were the lawmakers.
00:09:09
Speaker
They were the ones who upheld the law. And what they had been doing was that they were making laws about how to follow God's laws.
00:09:20
Speaker
More ah rules than what God had given the people. Now, God gave the people rules. He gave them the Torah. He gave them specific ways to do things.
00:09:32
Speaker
But then after they came back from their exile, they were very concerned about making sure that they followed God's rules because they had had a history of not following God's rules.
00:09:45
Speaker
And what they did is they turned obeying God into ah a very exact science. And they just kept adding more and more rules as to how you needed to obey.
00:09:57
Speaker
So, for instance, God said that there would be no work on the Sabbath. That is a day of rest. They instituted laws of how far you could go. Well, what constitutes work? And if you're familiar with ah being a lawyer in any way, there is interpretation of the law and it's like, well, what does this mean?
00:10:15
Speaker
how well How can we follow the law while still being within it? How can we navigate within it? but can How far can we go before we're considered not obeying the rules?
00:10:28
Speaker
God was looking for their heart. God wanted them to be happy about having a day of rest. Jesus came and told them that it was okay to save someone. It was okay to do good on the Sabbath.
00:10:42
Speaker
If a sheep or an animal fell into a pit or someone's child fell into a hole, wouldn't they get them out? Sorry, can't do it. It's the Sabbath. You'll have to stay down there, but here, I'll throw you some bread. No,
00:10:56
Speaker
it's not about making sure that you don't do things. It's about your heart. the The Pharisees were following rules and laws that they had made, and they were very particular about making sure that they gave their tithe, their 10% to everything, including their herbs in the garden.
00:11:16
Speaker
ah I'll make sure I give 10% of this and 10% of that. And Jesus said, first, think about what is right and love God. Then give your 10%.
00:11:29
Speaker
So we've talked a little bit before about it's not all about making sure you go to church every Sunday, make sure you're part of a women's group, make sure you're part of the nursery group, make sure you're checking all the boxes, make sure you read your Bible every day, check, check, check, check. check You can do all of those things and yet not have a heart for God.
00:11:52
Speaker
You really can. They can become chores and checklists and things to do. Are those things good to do? Absolutely. like But it's why we're doing them. it's It's having the heart for God first and then being motivated to do those things out of ah out of an attitude of love and service.
00:12:14
Speaker
Not because we have to or we feel obligated to. That's not what God wants. God wants our heart first. And Jesus said it's going to be very sad for those people who are so dedicated to following rules that they've made it difficult for people to come to God.
00:12:33
Speaker
Because as far as they know, it it seems that coming to God is all about just following rules. Jesus said they had taken away the key. They had taken away the key to God's kingdom for people.
00:12:46
Speaker
They had made it impossible for people to come because the people were discouraged. They had to follow rules. They were worried about breaking rules and they were not able to focus or to be taught or to be led to first seek God and his kingdom.
00:13:04
Speaker
That is what we are to do first. Seek God and his love, love God first. And then the Holy Spirit will motivate us into areas of service.
00:13:15
Speaker
If we're just signing up because we go, well, there's a need, I better do it. Well, I better make sure I'm doing all these things. You have to be careful. We can be um discouraged and worn out by all of our service that we are doing.
00:13:31
Speaker
And if we are not doing something that God is motivating us to do, we have to make sure God is calling us to do these things and not just doing them for the sake of doing them. That's what Jesus is telling us here.
00:13:46
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that that is is very lightening, that you feel like a burden has been taken off of you. This is why Jesus will tell us that to come to him, all who are burdened and heavy laden and tired, because he will give them rest.
00:14:03
Speaker
What is he giving them rest from? Tons upon tons of rules and obligations of ways of doing things. God wants our heart. He wants us to love him.
00:14:16
Speaker
He wants our attitude to be of love and caring. Once we love God and then we love others, that's what God

Conclusion and Invitation

00:14:24
Speaker
is looking for. Everything else will follow. It it isn't about following a strict set of standards.
00:14:31
Speaker
Those rules will come after. Obedience will come after. But there are only so many rules that we need to follow. Jesus said to treat others how we want to be treated, and that sums up the law and the prophets.
00:14:47
Speaker
Jesus will tell us later to love one another. So if anything you are doing is not done with love, then don't do it. That's an easy rule to follow. That's your check for what whether you're doing something right or wrong.
00:15:01
Speaker
Am I doing this with love? Am I doing this out of anger? Am I doing this because I think they're wrong and and they need to be told that they're wrong? It's the Holy Spirit's job to convict people.
00:15:16
Speaker
Whatever we do, just do it in love. Love God, love others. There you go. Well, I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today. Put that light up on a hill.
00:15:29
Speaker
Let everybody see that light. Let's click share. That's part of our light. I see that there are a lot of people who have been ah following and subscribing to this event, and I'm glad to know that you're here.
00:15:43
Speaker
It's not me you're here for, it's God's word, and I'm so excited to know that ah you are listening to God's word. So I would like to encourage you to share God's word with others to help us now spread the word about reading God's word.
00:15:56
Speaker
Help others to know about Jesus's commands for love and that it is so much easier than following rules and and everything. So I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day. I'm so glad you were here today.
00:16:10
Speaker
And will be here for you tomorrow for tomorrow's daily reading. I'll catch you then.
