If you would like to download my FREE calendar for keeping track of your commitment to read the Bible every day, you can find that on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/pages/read-the-bible-in-1-year

Monthly memberships to support this event can be purchased on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/offering_packages

Today's reading will cover Luke Chapters 12:51-56,  13:6-17, and  8:4-15, Matthew Chapter 13:1-23, and Mark Chapter 4:1-20.

Our reading today will bring us an account of Jesus healing on the worship day and parables about having ears to hear, eyes to see, and bearing fruit.

In our discussion for daily application today we will talk about not only hearing but understanding God's Word, applying God's Word to our daily lives, growing deep roots among the weeds of life, and the goal of bearing LOTS of fruit.

It is my sincere prayer that everyone watching and listening to this daily Bible reading event will not just hear but understand God's Word with eyes to see and ears to hear. I pray that in hearing and applying God's Word in your daily life that you will be fed and watered and as a result your roots will grow deeper, allowing you to resist being overgrown by the weeds that will pop up in your life. I pray that you remember that God is working EVERYTHING for good, even if we can't see it right now so that those weeds of life do not choke out your growth. I pray that you practice what you learn when the hot winds of opportunities come and you are not scorched by difficult times or wither away from God. Lastly, I pray that your well fed, well watered roots grow deep in rich, fertile soil and that God prunes every branch in you so that you are as fruitful as the Tree of Life.

Introduction & Purpose of Readings

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome back, everybody. Thank you for joining me for today's daily reading from the Dave by Dave Kidd's Bible written by Karen Henley. Thank you for joining me. I'm so glad that you are here.
00:00:15
Speaker
I am very thrilled to bring you today's reading. It is my hope that you will recognize yourself in this reading today as a seed that has sprouted with deep roots and is growing and bearing fruit for our Lord.
00:00:33
Speaker
That is one of the goals that I have for this event is that we understand God's word, that we grow, that we have deep roots by understanding and believing in God's word.
00:00:47
Speaker
And that and by doing those things that we will bear fruit. And I love that we are here together doing it this year. So if you are following along with your commitment calendar, go ahead and take that out.

Jesus' Parables & Teachings

00:01:03
Speaker
your sticker ready or whatever you're using to mark off those days because we are about to hear the Bible today.
00:01:12
Speaker
Look at that. We have one more day and then another month that has gone.
00:01:19
Speaker
Today we are going to be reading some parables that Jesus is giving us and he's going to be explaining why he is teaching the people in parables. You may be familiar with the word parable, but maybe although you understand what the point is, that it's a story, what you may not know is that it's what we would call a simile.
00:01:42
Speaker
It's a comparison between two things using like or as. And so these are ways that we can identify and transfer knowledge that we have from one area of life to another area of life.
00:01:59
Speaker
So when Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like, he is trying to give us something that we already understand so that we can take that understanding and apply it to something else.
00:02:13
Speaker
And then we can see the connection as to how they are similar. And then the light goes on. Ah, and we understand it. The word is more than understanding. The word is applying. And that's why every day has daily application for how today's reading can be useful in your life and in mine.
00:02:34
Speaker
i love that God's word is so valuable. Every single day, every reading. as we go through the Bible this year has daily application in our own lives.
00:02:47
Speaker
So buckle up, let's get ready for the parables that we may know and love and be prepared to put our thinking cap on so that we can understand. Let's open our eyes and open our ears that we may have eyes to see and ears to hear.

Speaker
Our

Division & Conflict in Parables

00:03:08
Speaker
first section is entitled Clouds from the West.
00:03:14
Speaker
Do you think I came to bring peace? asked Jesus. No, I came to shake things up. In our big Bible, he says, bring division.
00:03:27
Speaker
From now on, families will fight each other. Three will be against two, two will be against three. Fathers will turn against sons, said Jesus, and sons will turn against fathers.
00:03:44
Speaker
Mothers will turn against daughters, and daughters will turn against mothers. Mothers-in-law will be against daughters-in-law, and daughters-in-law will be against mothers-in-law.

Lessons on Patience & Outcomes

00:03:59
Speaker
You watch clouds coming up from the west, said Jesus, and then you say it's going to rain. And it does. ah south wind blows and you say it will be hot.
00:04:11
Speaker
And it is. You can tell what's happening with the earth and sky. Why can't you tell what is happening now?
00:04:24
Speaker
Then Jesus told them a story. A man planted a fig tree in his garden and sometimes he would go back to look at it. He was watching for fruit to grow on it, but there was no fruit.
00:04:40
Speaker
At last the man talked to his gardener about it, and he said, have been coming here for three years, and I have been looking for fruit on this fig tree, but I have not found any, so cut it down.
00:04:53
Speaker
It's just using up the soil. But the gardener spoke up. Sir, leave the fig tree alone just one more year, and I'll see what I can do.
00:05:05
Speaker
I'll dig around it. I'll make the soil richer. Maybe it will give you fruit next year. And then if it doesn't, you can cut it down.

Healing on the Sabbath & Compassion

00:05:19
Speaker
The Woman Who Could Not Stand Up Tall One worship day, Jesus was teaching in a town's worship house. A woman there was all bent over, and she couldn't stand up tall.
00:05:34
Speaker
A bad spirit had kept her bent for 18 years. Jesus saw her and he called out to her to come over to him.
00:05:45
Speaker
And he said to her, you are now set free from your sickness. Then he put his hands on her. We call that laying on of hands.
00:05:56
Speaker
He laid his hands on her. And right away she stood up tall and she praised God.
00:06:05
Speaker
The man in charge was mad. He was mad because Jesus made this person well on the Sabbath day, the worship day. So the man in charge talked to the people.
00:06:19
Speaker
There are six days of work, he said. You can come and be made well on any other day, but do not come to be made well on the worship day.
00:06:32
Speaker
Then Jesus said, all of you work on the worship day. Don't you take your ox or donkey outside on the worship day? Don't you lead it to water so it can drink?
00:06:44
Speaker
Satan kept this woman bent over for 18 years. Shouldn't she be set free on this worship day?
00:06:54
Speaker
Jesus's enemies felt put down when they heard this. but the other people were glad and they loved the wonderful things that Jesus did.

Receiving God's Word & Growing Faith

00:07:07
Speaker
Seeds and dirt. Are your eyes open? Are your ears listening?
00:07:16
Speaker
Jesus went out to sit by the lake. Many people came to listen to him. So he got into a boat and the people stood on the shore. And then Jesus told them many stories.
00:07:29
Speaker
Once there was a farmer, said Jesus, and he went out to plant his seeds. He threw them here and there, and some of the seeds fell on the path.
00:07:42
Speaker
Birds came and ate them up.
00:07:45
Speaker
Some of the seeds fell on rocky dirt. The seeds grew up fast, but there wasn't much dirt. And then the sun came out and it was hot on the little plants.
00:07:57
Speaker
So they dried up. They didn't have good roots. Some seeds fell around weeds. And those seeds grew up, but the weeds grew too.
00:08:09
Speaker
And the weeds grew over the new plants. And the new plants couldn't grow.
00:08:17
Speaker
Some seeds fell on good, rich dirt. A crop of good plants came up, and the farmer got much more than he planted.
00:08:29
Speaker
Listen, if you have ears.
00:08:35
Speaker
Jesus' friends came to him. Why do you tell people stories, they asked him. And Jesus said, you can understand the secrets of God's kingdom.
00:08:47
Speaker
And other people can't. Some people want to know and understand, and they will be able to understand even more. Some people do not want to know or understand, and they will understand less and less.
00:09:04
Speaker
And that's why I tell stories, said Jesus. The people seem to see. but they're not really looking. They seem to hear, but they're not really listening.
00:09:19
Speaker
So they don't understand.
00:09:23
Speaker
What the prophet Isaiah said has come true. You will hear, but never understand. You will see but you won't know what it means.
00:09:35
Speaker
These people's hearts are hard. They cannot hear very well with their ears and their eyes are closed. If their ears and eyes were open, they might see, they might hear, they might understand.
00:09:50
Speaker
Then they would turn and i would make them well.
00:09:58
Speaker
Jesus said, good things have come to your eyes. Your eyes see. Good things have come to your ears. They hear.
00:10:10
Speaker
There were many prophets long ago and there were many others who did right. They all wanted to see what you see, but they did not get to see it. They all wanted to hear what you hear, but they didn't get to hear it.
00:10:25
Speaker
So listen to what the story of the farmer means. Are you listening?
00:10:33
Speaker
Some people hear the message about God's kingdom, but they don't understand it, said Jesus. And then Satan comes and he takes away what was planted in that person's heart.
00:10:46
Speaker
This is the seed that fell on the path. And then they can't be saved. So then there was the seed that fell on rocky dirt. And it's like the person who hears.
00:11:00
Speaker
He's glad to take God's word into his heart, but he does not grow. has no roots. So this person lasts just a short time.
00:11:12
Speaker
He is quick to leave God when trouble comes.
00:11:16
Speaker
Then there was the seed that fell around all the weeds. And it's like the person who hears God's words, but he has lots of things to worry about. And his riches make him worry also.
00:11:30
Speaker
And that pushes God's word away.
00:11:35
Speaker
But some seed fell on good dirt. And it's like a person who hears God's words. He understands it. And he is like a plant that comes up.
00:11:47
Speaker
A great crop grows and it may be 30, 60, or even 100 times bigger than what was planted.
00:11:59
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:12:03
Speaker
How about you? Did you have ears to hear today? Did you have eyes to see what Jesus was telling us? I hope that you did.
00:12:16
Speaker
And I hope that as you attend and listen or watch this daily reading with me this year, that you feel that you are growing roots that are deeper every day.
00:12:31
Speaker
that you are being nourished and fed so that you can have strength to grow big and strong on the rock that Jesus is, which also has good rich soil for deep roots.
00:12:48
Speaker
And I hope that you are yielding fruit. It is very important that as we grow, that we bear fruit. We've known by now that we can tell what kind of person a person is by the kind of fruit that they bear.
00:13:06
Speaker
What if they don't have any fruit?
00:13:10
Speaker
Jesus will tell us later on that any branch that does not bear fruit is cut off and thrown away into the fire. It's very important that we grow and we are fed that we bear fruit.
00:13:28
Speaker
And not just a little bit of fruit, but a lot of fruit. Because we will learn later also that Jesus prunes us. God prunes us. So that those branches in us that bear fruit will bear even more fruit.
00:13:44
Speaker
God wants us to bear so much fruit that we are like the tree of life. And we just bear so much fruit.
00:13:54
Speaker
And Jesus is the water that waters us. so that we will never have to dry up.
00:14:03
Speaker
So I hope that as you hear or watch this daily Bible reading, that you feel that you are growing and that you are understanding God's word. It's very important that we understand God's word when we receive it, that we take the time to try to understand what we can so that we can learn how to apply it.
00:14:23
Speaker
And I hope that you are learning how to do that with this event. That is my hope that we will all bear much fruit this year.
00:14:33
Speaker
wanna talk about the weeds that grow up. One of the ways that we are working to pull out weeds around us is that when we have difficult times, which we have, we will always have those, that we remember that God is working everything that happens for good.
00:14:55
Speaker
We don't need to be concerned about weeds that are growing up that are troublesome. They are troublesome, but we need to look to God to ask him, what good are you going to work into this situation?
00:15:08
Speaker
because he is using situations to help us grow. he is using situations to help us learn how to be and how not to be. and we can't do that just by reading about them.
00:15:20
Speaker
We have to have practice. You can't learn how to do math by reading about math. You have to practice. We can't learn about reading by having someone just read to us.
00:15:34
Speaker
We have to read. And that's what I love about this version of the Bible, this day-by-day kids Bible, is that it's written at a level that is pretty mature, but written in a way that it is easy for all of us to understand, no matter how young we are or how old we are.
00:15:56
Speaker
And sometimes we incorporate some of the Big Bible in with it too, for those of us who need a little more nourishment, who are a little bit hungrier for more of God's Word.
00:16:07
Speaker
And that's why I always put what chapters and verses that we are reading from, so that if you are hungry for more details, that you know exactly where to go in your Big Bible to head it up and dig in for a second helping.
00:16:22
Speaker
I hope that some of you are doing that this year in order to help your growth. And I hope that you are weeding out those weeds that want to come up all the time. Because I don't know about you, but it seems like my yard is forever full of weeds.
00:16:36
Speaker
No matter how many good seeds we plant. It just seems like weeds are growing up all the time. And later on, Jesus will tell us that the weeds will grow up along with it. But sometimes you have to let the weeds grow with the good plants.
00:16:49
Speaker
Because if you pull the weeds up at the same time that the good plants are planted, that you will also pull up the roots of the of the plant the yeah that has been planted.

Family Divisions & Maintaining Belief

00:17:00
Speaker
And we don't want to pull up our roots. We want to grow put down deep roots so that we can bear fruit.
00:17:08
Speaker
So it can be difficult when we share God's word with others that we want everybody to have roots. But we read also today that he did not only come to bring peace. For those who understand, Jesus gives us shalom. He gives us peace. He gives us fullness and wellness.
00:17:30
Speaker
But for those who do not wish to believe, For those that choose not to believe, there's the division that comes that Jesus is telling us about.
00:17:41
Speaker
And as we've seen in our reading this year, we have seen in the old covenant that you can have a father who is a priest and have children who go into the priesthood.
00:17:54
Speaker
And yet they can be oh so, so sinful. We've read about that. Where more than one son of a priest did terrible things while they were a priest.
00:18:07
Speaker
So even in our families today, you might have two or three kids or more. And you can have some that choose to follow the Lord and some who simply do not.
00:18:20
Speaker
And Jesus tells us that that's the way it will be in a family. that you will have brother against brother, father against son, son against father, daughter against mother, mother against daughter, in-laws against parents-in-laws.
00:18:38
Speaker
There will be division because not everyone is going to choose to believe. But we need to be firm and not let that be a weed for us.
00:18:49
Speaker
So we need to maintain our faith and be strong and wait on the Lord with our ears that hear and our eyes that see. We can pray for them, but not everyone is going to respond and make that choice.
00:19:05
Speaker
Not everyone is called and not everyone who is called answers. And that's just the way that it is.

Encouragement to Share Faith

00:19:14
Speaker
Fortunately, we have a God who does not desire that anyone should make the choice not to listen. And that's why he calls everybody that wants to listen and hear.
00:19:24
Speaker
But as we see here today, Jesus tells us that people will be seeing and not really seeing, that they will hear but not understand. And that's the way it will be.
00:19:36
Speaker
And that fulfills Isaiah's words. So I hope that you have a lot to think about today, but that you find your daily application in making sure that you are working diligently toward growing those roots so that you may bear fruit and knowing that when those difficult time comes times come, that you may be in the process of being pruned so that you can grow even more fruit.
00:20:02
Speaker
But I hope that none of you who are watching or listening will have their seeds taken away. I hope that those seeds grow and that they are not just tossed into the dirt with the rocks so that they come up quickly and shallow.
00:20:18
Speaker
But when you come to those times of testings and when you have difficult times, that you seek the Lord for the water of eternal life and that you seek nourishment so that those roots can dig down deep and you will not wither away in the heat of the moments.
00:20:37
Speaker
That is my prayer for you, for all of us who are watching and reading and listening. So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today, that you are encouraged to bear much fruit, that you will be as big as ah mustard seed plant that Jesus tells us is the smallest of all seeds and yet grows to be so big that birds can perch in it.
00:21:01
Speaker
And if you have somebody that has come across your mind or your heart to share this with, I pray that you will share that with them so that we can help spread the word about reading God's word, that they also might see and hear and understand and that the word would grow in them and help them bear fruit too.
00:21:21
Speaker
I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day and i will see you here in the same place tomorrow. Thank you for joining me today.
