If you would like to download my FREE calendar for keeping track of your commitment to read the Bible every day, you can find that on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/pages/read-the-bible-in-1-year

Monthly memberships to support this event can be purchased on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/offering_packages

Today's reading will include Matthew Chapter 10:1-16, 40-42, 14:1-12, Mark Chapter 6:7-11, 14-29, and Luke Chapter 9:1-9.

Today we will read about Jesus sending the disciples out with the ability to get rid of bad spirits (demons), heal people, and bring those who have died back to life.  We will also read about the death of John the Baptist because Herod made a promise he had to keep.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the command Jesus gave His disciples when He sent them out - to freely give away what they had been given for free. Everything we have comes from God. We may be afraid that if we give away what we have that we won't have enough left for ourselves. God, however, has promised us that with the measure we give, so He will give to  us. God has also promised us that if we seek His Kingdom first, everything else will be provided for us. We don't need to be worried about having enough. We will always have enough, if we follow the formula of giving back to God first and sharing freely what God has given us with others, whether it is our time, talent, gifts, money, clothes, food, whatever it is! God is generous. We cannot out give Him!

00:00:03
Speaker
Hello, hello! I hope you are having a great day today. Today is the reading for September 3rd, and we are reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:14
Speaker

00:00:40
Speaker
Today, we are going to get right into our reading. I'm a little short on time today. i am running behind in my day. Shock and surprise.

Jesus Sends Disciples: Mission and Instructions

00:00:50
Speaker
So today we are going to be starting with our first section entitled, Like Sheep, Going Where Wolves Are.
00:01:00
Speaker
So ah yesterday we left off and Jesus said to ask God to ah send workers into the field and the workers can bring in the people. Now, after this occurred, Jesus called his 12 special friends.
00:01:15
Speaker
In the big Bible, they're his disciples. But in this version, we're just calling them his 12 special friends. And he told them to go out two by two. And he gave them power that was stronger than bad spirits.
00:01:31
Speaker
They could send bad spirits away and they could make people well. Go to the Jews, said Jesus, and teach God's message.
00:01:43
Speaker
Tell people that the kingdom of heaven is near. Heal people who are sick, said Jesus. Make people alive again after they have died.
00:01:56
Speaker
Send bad spirits away from people.
00:02:00
Speaker
You were given what you have for free, said Jesus. Now you give it away for free. Don't take gold or silver and don't take a bag for your trip.
00:02:14
Speaker
Do not take more than one shirt. Don't take more than one pair of shoes. Don't take a walking stick. You are a worker and people should help you out.
00:02:26
Speaker
In our big Bible, it says the worker is worth his wages.
00:02:32
Speaker
Go into the town, said Jesus, and look for people who will help you. Stay with them until you leave that town and go into their homes. Be friendly and pray for peace to come to them.
00:02:46
Speaker
If they welcome you, keep praying for peace. In the Big Bible, it says, let your peace rest on that house. And if they do not welcome you, do not let your peace rest on that house or don't pray for peace for them.
00:03:04
Speaker
What if people won't listen to you, said Jesus? then shake the dust off your feet when you leave that town, because the truth is, someday God will judge the world, and then the bad city of Sodom will be better off than that town.
00:03:22
Speaker
You are like sheep going where the wolves are, said Jesus. So be as smart as snakes, but be as peaceful as a dove.
00:03:34
Speaker
People who are friendly to you, are being friendly to me. People who welcome me ah really welcoming God, said Jesus.
00:03:46
Speaker
Welcome a prophet just because he is a prophet. Then God will give you the same good things that he gives the prophet.
00:03:56
Speaker
Welcome people who do what is right because of the right things they do, said Jesus. Then God will give you the same good things he gives them.
00:04:11
Speaker
You follow me, so you might give just a cup of cold water to someone. And if you do, you will get good things from God.

John's Criticism and Herod's Reaction

00:04:24
Speaker
John the Baptist in Trouble Now John, who had baptized people, was still around, and he had talked to many people about God's way. He had even talked to King Herod.
00:04:36
Speaker
Now King Herod had married his own brother's wife, and her name was Herodias. Now John had told Herod that it's not right to marry your brother's wife. So King Herod had put John into jail.
00:04:50
Speaker
Herodias was angry at John too, and in fact, she wanted to have him killed, but she couldn't because Herod was afraid of John, and he was afraid that people would be upset.
00:05:02
Speaker
So he kept John safe.
00:05:06
Speaker
King Herod knew that John was a good man, and he knew that John did what was right. Herod liked to listen to John, even though the things John said were like a mystery to him.
00:05:21
Speaker
Now one day King Herod had a party. It was his birthday party. And all the leaders of the land came. Now Herodias had a daughter who could dance.
00:05:32
Speaker
And she came too. And she danced for the people. And they all liked the way she danced. So Herod promised to give her anything she wanted.
00:05:44
Speaker
Just ask me, he said, and I will give you whatever you want. You can even have half of my kingdom. So the girl went out and told her mother and asked her, what should I ask for?
00:05:59
Speaker
Ask Herod to kill John, said Herodias, and tell him that you want John's head. So the girl went back to King Herod and she said, I want John's head on a plate right now.
00:06:15
Speaker
Now this made Herod very upset, but he had promised. and he didn't want to say no in front of everyone. So he sent a man to the jail and he gave the man orders to kill John. And they did.
00:06:34
Speaker
Then the man put John's head on a plate and he brought it to King Herod. The king gave it to the girl and she gave it to her mother.
00:06:47
Speaker
John's friends came and they got his body and they put it in a grave.
00:06:53
Speaker
Now, Jesus and his friends were traveling from town to town, and they told the people the good news about Jesus.

Discussion on Jesus' Identity and Divine Role

00:07:01
Speaker
They made many people well, too. People talked about Jesus everywhere, and even Herod heard about Jesus.
00:07:11
Speaker
ah Some people kept saying, Jesus is really John the Baptist, and he has come back to life. And that's why great powers work in him. Other people said, Jesus is really Elijah.
00:07:26
Speaker
And other people said, Jesus is a prophet and he is like one of the prophets from long ago.
00:07:34
Speaker
When Herod heard about Jesus, he said, it's John. I cut his head off, but he's alive again. and Herod tried to see Jesus for himself.
00:07:49
Speaker
Now that is the end of our reading today.
00:07:55
Speaker
Wow, this was some amazing stuff we read today, don't you think? Jesus was sending out his disciples and he gave them the ah ability to not only cast out demons, but to also heal people and bring people back to life again after they had died.
00:08:18
Speaker
I want to think we have that same ability today. When we go out to tell people about Jesus, we've heard amazing stories about people who have done healings for people.
00:08:29
Speaker
And I think it has to do with our faith. Jesus says that for those who believe it will be done according to what, how they believe. And for those who don't believe, then they can't.
00:08:44
Speaker
Now,
00:08:46
Speaker
I wanted to talk a little bit about King Herod before we get into our daily application. First, it's important to make a conscious decision about what we make promises about.
00:08:59
Speaker
Herod made a promise in haste. He was delighted with this girl's dancing, and he told her she could have whatever she wanted, and then he had to do something he didn't want to do.
00:09:13
Speaker
So we need to be careful about when we make promises. Herod kept the promise because he didn't want to say no in front of the people who had witnessed him saying he could do, he he would give her whatever she wanted.
00:09:26
Speaker
So he did it. And it had a big consequence and it cost John his life. So we need to be careful about what we promise people because we don't know what they're going to ask for if we make such a promise like that.
00:09:43
Speaker
The next thing is, is that people didn't know who Jesus was. Was Jesus John come back to life? Nope. Was Jesus Elijah? Nope.
00:09:58
Speaker
Jesus told the people already who he was. He had said that John was the Elijah that was to come to prepare the way for him. And he was not just a prophet.
00:10:11
Speaker
He is God's son. He is the one who was prophesied about who was to come and save the people so that by his death, the word would be written on our hearts with the receiving of the Holy Spirit.
00:10:25
Speaker
The Holy Spirit is God's spirit. When the Holy Spirit talks through us, our big Bible says that it is our father's spirit talking through us.
00:10:39
Speaker
We read about the Holy Spirit being the one who would speak for us when it comes time. when if we are um When Jesus was saying that people would be brought to the synagogues and and brought to leaders.
00:10:54
Speaker
and that And they were not to be afraid of what to say because it was God's Spirit who would be speaking through them at that time.
00:11:03
Speaker
So that is only possible because Jesus is God's son and he sent us the Holy Spirit.

Teachings on Generosity and Provision

00:11:13
Speaker
So our daily application today, however, is that Jesus told the disciples, his friends, that they were being given something freely and that they needed to freely give it away.
00:11:28
Speaker
We need to not be greedy or stingy with what we have, thinking we don't have enough of something to be able to give it away. Whatever God has given us, share it.
00:11:41
Speaker
Freely have we been given, so freely do we need to give it away. It's very simple. We just wanna be sure that we are sharing the abundance of what God has given us.
00:11:56
Speaker
and God always gives us enough because he tells us that if we seek his kingdom first, God will take care of everything else. Jesus told us that God knows that we need clothes and that we need food.
00:12:09
Speaker
Whatever we have, God has given us. We need to share it with others. We will always have enough, just like the widow who was to provide for Elijah.
00:12:21
Speaker
when they had the drought and he came to her and he told her to make him some food and bring him some water. And she said, I only have a little bit of food left. It's just enough for my son and I, and then we're just going to wait to die. And Elijah told her that they would not run out of food until after it rained.
00:12:39
Speaker
And that's exactly what happened. God will make sure we have enough. He provides us with everything. Throughout the old covenant, we've been reading that we are to give food to people who don't have food.
00:12:54
Speaker
We are to help by giving clothes to people who don't have enough clothes. And when we do these things, God always gives us more. And Jesus promised that that would be the case, that when we give, God will give as we give.
00:13:10
Speaker
So the more we give, the more God will give us. it's it's We can't out give God. And God gives us freely. He doesn't ask for us to pay for it.
00:13:22
Speaker
Everything God gives us, he gives us. He even gave us his the life of his son. He gives us the gift of salvation for free.
00:13:33
Speaker
We need to tell people about that gift, as well as give away the things that God has given us. Jesus will tell us in our reading, That it's difficult for a rich man to enter heaven because he doesn't want to part with his riches.
00:13:50
Speaker
We want to make sure that we are not keeping what we have for ourselves, but we are sharing it freely because God has given us things freely.
00:14:01
Speaker
Jesus taught us recently that for those who have been given much, much will be expected of them. And for those who have been given little, then little is expected of them, but everyone is expected to give.

Encouragement in Sharing and Discreet Giving

00:14:18
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today, and I hope that you feel encouraged to give to whatever it is that God has given you, of your talent, of whatever God has provided for you.
00:14:30
Speaker
And knowing that when we do, God will also reward us. Jesus told us today that even if we just give a cup of cold water to somebody, that he will reward us.
00:14:43
Speaker
We need to be sure that we are giving for the right reasons, but know that when we do, God will always see what we do. Jesus told us many times, too, that when we do things, to do them without making a big fuss over it, not to draw attention so that we can gain ah fame and joy.
00:15:05
Speaker
notoriety for what we are doing, but to just do it. You don't need to say, hey, guess what I'm doing? I'm doing this, I'm doing this, I'm doing this. Because God says, then we will have received our reward in full.
00:15:18
Speaker
However, when God has given us things, we need to be sure that we share it. We want to be sure we do that. And our Father in heaven who sees what we do will reward us. Not that that is our motivation, but just to know that it will not go unseen.
00:15:34
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today. If you feel that God has lit your light today, please click that light button so that we can spread the word about reading God's word and that other people will see and hear God's word here.
00:15:48
Speaker

00:16:03
Speaker
And I will be here for everyone again tomorrow. See you then.
