If you would like to download my FREE calendar for keeping track of your commitment to read the Bible every day, you can find that on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/pages/read-the-bible-in-1-year

Monthly memberships to support this event can be purchased on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/offering_packages

Today's reading will include Matthew Chapter 18 ,Mark Chapters 9:30-41, and Luke Chapter 9:46-50 and Chapter 17:1-10.

Today we will read and discuss being great in the kingdom of God by being a servant to others and not considering ourselves greater than others. Like an actual servant, we are not consider what we do to be fabulous and raising us above others. Instead we need to remember that we are only doing what God has called us to do! We will also read and discuss the importance of not leading others into sin, whether directly or indirectly, because doing so will have consequences for us with God. Today Jesus will tell us that there is power in community prayer because wherever there are two or more gathered together in His name who agree on something to pray for, HE IS RIGHT THERE WITH US! Jesus will never leave us or forget us. He will ALWAYS be with us!! This is such a powerful benefit that we need to be using. Lastly, we will be reminded of how important it is to forgive people IN OUR HEARTS. Just saying we forgive with our mouths is not enough. Our Father in Heaven knows our hearts. If we are not faithful to be compassionate and forgiving with others then we will receive the same treatment from God. God is compassionate and forgiving to us and we need to be LIKE HIM by also being compassionate and forgiving toward others, no matter how many times they may sin against us and ask for forgiveness. We all know what it is like to repeat the same sins over and over and ask God for forgiveness. It is the same with others toward us!

Key Teachings Overview

00:00:39
Speaker
We have some awesome reading today. Today we are going to be reading about how to be great in the kingdom of God. As well as the importance of making sure that we do not lead other people to sin or astray.
00:00:57
Speaker
And then we will also learn about the importance of forgiveness. So we have three big important things to learn about today.

Greatness through Service

00:01:10
Speaker
Now, after yesterday, when yeah ah Jesus sent Peter to go fishing to pay the temple tax, this occurs and after that. So now Jesus and his friends were walking down the road and his friends began fussing with one another.
00:01:26
Speaker
So Jesus asked them, what are you fussing about? Now, Jesus's friends didn't answer because they had been fussing over who was the greatest.
00:01:38
Speaker
So Jesus sat down. He asked them, Do you want to be first? He asked. Then make yourself last.
00:01:49
Speaker
Serve others. Let's suppose you have a servant, said Jesus. And let's say this servant was taking care of your garden or he was watching your sheep in the field.
00:02:02
Speaker
At the end of the day, he comes in. Would you say to him, please come sit down, have something to eat? He is your servant, so no. You would say, make my supper first and serve me while I eat and drink, and then you may have your supper.
00:02:22
Speaker
And let's say your servant does what you tell him to do. Is that anything special? I don't think so, Jesus said. And it is to be that way with you too, said Jesus.
00:02:36
Speaker
You are to say that you only did what you were told to do.

Entering God's Kingdom

00:02:43
Speaker
Now Jesus called a child to him, and Jesus' twelve special friends were there too. He asked the child to stand with him. And then Jesus said, You must change from what you are like now to go into God's kingdom.
00:03:00
Speaker
You must become like little children. A little child knows that there are others who are greater than them. So treat others like they are greater than you.
00:03:13
Speaker
Then you will be the greatest in God's kingdom.
00:03:18
Speaker
If you welcome a little child, you are actually welcoming me, said Jesus. And if you are welcoming me, you are actually welcoming God.
00:03:29
Speaker
Now, if you make a child sin, you are in trouble. It would be better to be thrown down into the deepest sea.

Parable of the Lost Sheep

00:03:39
Speaker
Do not treat these little ones as if they are not important.
00:03:45
Speaker
Their angels are always with their heavenly father. They always see his face, said Jesus. Now suppose you had 100 sheep, said Jesus, and one of them walked off and got lost.
00:03:59
Speaker
Wouldn't you leave the 99 sheep on a hill to go look for your lost sheep? Now what would you do if you found that sheep, said Jesus? You would be happy about that one sheep, and you would be happier for it than for the 99 that didn't walk away.
00:04:16
Speaker
And that is the way your Father in heaven is. He doesn't want any little ones to be lost. How sad it is for the world that there are things that make people sin.
00:04:30
Speaker
These things will always be around, said Jesus.

Inclusivity in Good Deeds

00:04:34
Speaker
But how sad it is for people who make others sin. They should know that they will get in trouble with God.
00:04:45
Speaker
Now John said, we saw a man sending bad spirits away and he was doing it by saying your name. And we asked him to stop because he is not one of us. Do not stop him, said Jesus.
00:04:59
Speaker
He does wonders in my name. And that means that he will not be saying bad things about me. Anyone who isn't against us is for us.
00:05:12
Speaker
Now someone may give you water in my name, and they may do it because you are my friend, said Jesus. And if they do, God will do good things for them.
00:05:25
Speaker
Now someone may do something wrong to you, said Jesus, and then you should go to see him and show him what he did wrong. Keep it just between the two of you. And if he listens, then you have one a friend.
00:05:39
Speaker
If he won't listen, then go back later and take one or two people with you, said Jesus. And maybe he will listen to them. If he does not listen to them, then tell my other followers.
00:05:51
Speaker
And if he doesn't listen to my followers, then stop trying. He is like a tax man and he is like someone who doesn't believe in God. Now, two of you might agree on something when you pray.
00:06:05
Speaker
Agree about anything that you ask for, and then my Father in heaven will do it for you.

The Lesson of Forgiveness

00:06:14
Speaker
Two or three people might come together in my name, and then I am right there with them.
00:06:24
Speaker
Peter came to Jesus and asked him, how many times should I forgive somebody for doing wrong? Seven times? Not just seven times, said Jesus, but 70 times seven, said Jesus.
00:06:43
Speaker
Someone may do something wrong to you and then tell him what he did. If he is sorry, then forgive him. he may sin against you seven times in one day. And every time he may come back seven times saying, I'm sorry.
00:06:58
Speaker
So forgive him. God's kingdom is like a king, said Jesus. This king wanted his servants to pay what they owed him.
00:07:09
Speaker
And one man owed him millions. And he couldn't pay the money back. So the king said that he would sell that man and he would sell the whole man's family and he would sell everything the man owned.
00:07:23
Speaker
And then the king would have the money that the man owed him. But the servant bowed down before the king and he begged, Please, just wait a little longer and I promise I will pay you back.
00:07:36
Speaker
The king felt sorry for the man, so instead he told the man not to worry about what he owed. And the king wouldn't make him pay him back. And he let the man go. So the servant left and now he didn't owe any of that money to the king anymore.
00:07:53
Speaker
But then the servant met a man who owed him and just a little bit of money. And he caught this man and he started choking him and he said, pay me what you owe me. And the man got down and he begged, please just wait a little longer and I promise I will pay you back.
00:08:10
Speaker
But the servant didn't listen to him and instead he had the man put in jail. Now other servants saw what had happened and they were very angry about that. So they went and told the king about it.
00:08:22
Speaker
And the king called the servant. "'You are a sinful servant,' he said. "'I did not make you pay what you owed me. "'And that's because you begged me not to. "'I was kind to you. "'So you, shouldn't you have been kind to this other man?' So the king was very angry and he sent this servant to jail.
00:08:47
Speaker
And now he wouldn't let that man out until he paid everything back.
00:08:54
Speaker
So forgive other people from your heart, said Jesus.

Serving and Forgiving from the Heart

00:08:59
Speaker
And if you don't, then my father in heaven will treat you the same way.
00:09:06
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:09:12
Speaker
Wow, we have a lot of lessons today. We have those three lessons. One is that if we think that we are doing a fabulous job in God's kingdom, we need to remember that we are only doing what God has called us to do.
00:09:25
Speaker
We are like God's servant. We are to do what God's will is. Jesus himself said that he did not come to be served, but to serve. And if no student is greater than his teacher, then how can we think that we are above and that we are meant to be served?
00:09:44
Speaker
We are to serve others, just like Jesus served people. He hardly ever got any rest. Everywhere he went, we see that crowds are following him.
00:09:55
Speaker
And when he sees them, does he get angry with them and tell them, please, I just need some time to myself. No, he says he has compassion on the people and he begins teaching them.
00:10:07
Speaker
And then he also is healing them. So in the same way Jesus was a servant, so do we also need to be a servant and then not expect to be glorified for it, but to simply remember that we are only doing God's will and what he has called us to do.
00:10:28
Speaker
And we need to remember as we go through our daily walk, not to lead others astray. We talked earlier in the year about being a good example and how when we saw the kings of Israel and of Judah, that when they followed God and they were good examples of how to obey God, people saw how they were and they followed along after those examples.
00:10:50
Speaker
But when the kings were bad and they were sinful and they followed along after false gods and false idols, the people followed the same example.
00:11:01
Speaker
So we are to lead by example, just like we see Jesus leading by example. He was our good shepherd. He is our good shepherd. And we are meant to look out for other people.
00:11:13
Speaker
And that means to be conscientious, to be aware of what we are doing so that people don't see us and think, oh, well, they're doing it. It must be fine. I'm going to do that too.
00:11:24
Speaker
Instead, when they see us doing something and say, oh, I better do that too, let's make sure that we are providing good examples. I'm a mom and I don't know about you, but if you're a parent too, doesn't it seem like your kids always manage to pick up all your bad habits, but none of your good ones?
00:11:42
Speaker
I don't know. Maybe it's just me. It seems like it's so much easier for kids to pick up our bad habits than it is for them to pick up our good habits. Maybe it's because our bad habits are the ones that they are seeing.
00:11:55
Speaker
That's a thought. So we want to be sure that we are providing good examples so that we do not either intentionally or unintentionally lead other people astray.
00:12:07
Speaker
Woe to us if we know what is wrong and right and we do what is wrong and we encourage others to follow in that wrong. That specifically is what Jesus is talking about as well, is that if we lead people astray, it will not go well for us. There are consequences for that. We need to bear that in mind.
00:12:25
Speaker
It does not become consequence free. It may not seem like anything happened to us at the time, but it says here that our heavenly father sees what done and he will not be pleased with us.
00:12:40
Speaker
Lastly, we need to look at forgiveness. And I also do want to mention prayer. ah That is not part of our daily application specifically. But when we pray together, the power of prayer in coming together to agree with one another.
00:12:57
Speaker
Jesus tells us here that where two or more are gathered together in his name, he is right here with us. That is awesome news.
00:13:09
Speaker
Jesus never leaves us. He never turns us away. That is what forsake means. Forsake means to turn someone away. And Jesus told us recently that he will never turn away those who come to him.

The Power of Communal Prayer

00:13:23
Speaker
That means he will never forsake us in the Big Bible. So Jesus is right there with us when we come together to pray. And we saw the other day that when we pray, we are to believe that God has already given us what we have asked for, and it will be done for us.
00:13:40
Speaker
And here Jesus is telling us that when we come together, he will also be right there with us and that God will give us what we are asking for. That is powerful.
00:13:52
Speaker
There is strength in community. God does not want us to walk alone. He wants us to walk together, to bear one another's burdens, to come together in prayer.
00:14:04
Speaker
So that's very important that we remember to pray for one another. In the Old Covenant, we saw that one of the things that God was frustrated about with the people is that nobody was interceding for one another.
00:14:16
Speaker
Interceding means to pray for one another. If we see somebody struggling, instead of ah judging them and saying, well, they must be doing something wrong to deserve what they're getting, or to say, well, they they just need to learn something from this. What do you need to learn?
00:14:33
Speaker
We need to also be praying for these people. Pray for those that God puts in our path to pray for. That is being compassionate. That is looking after one another. And especially if we come together with that person, Jesus will be right there with us.
00:14:51
Speaker
And we know that his Holy Spirit is our comforter. He will comfort them. you will encourage them. And we can take comfort ourselves in knowing that our prayers help to make this occur.
00:15:04
Speaker
Because we are meant to intercede for one another. We are meant to bear one another's burdens. If we were not, then Jesus would not come with us together when we are gathered in his name.
00:15:16
Speaker
So that is a very important thing that we need to be sure that we are taking advantage of. We have many benefits as children in the heavenly kingdom. We are together, one community. We are brothers and sisters.
00:15:30
Speaker
And we want to be sure that we are behaving as brothers and sisters. We are all family.
00:15:39
Speaker
Lastly, we talk about forgiveness. Peter asks, how many times do I need to forgive someone? How many times do we commit the same sin and say, oh God, I'm so sorry.
00:15:50
Speaker
Please forgive me for this. We ourselves know what it feels like to constantly come before God and say, i did it again. ah the spirit, my spirit is willing, but my flesh is weak.
00:16:05
Speaker
If we also remember that we are just like that as well, it helps us to be compassionate on others who are sinning against us. And today we read that Jesus tells us that it is very important that we forgive people from our heart, not just with our words, which would be superficially, but with our heart.
00:16:27
Speaker
Because God knows our heart. His spirit is in us. He knows our thoughts. It's not enough to simply speak things with our mouth. We need to forgive from our heart.
00:16:40
Speaker
And Jesus tells us that if we do not forgive, then we will not be forgiven. We've also read before that Jesus has taught us that the measure that we use is the measure that will be used for us.
00:16:54
Speaker
If we are generous with people, God is generous with us. And so if we are forgiving with other people and compassionate, so too will our Heavenly Father be forgiving and compassionate toward us.
00:17:07
Speaker
We are meant to become more and more like Jesus. And Jesus is the ultimate picture of forgiveness. He forgave us from all of our sins so that we might have eternal life with him.

Encouragement and Community Building

00:17:21
Speaker
If he can forgive us while we were still sinners, not even asking or looking for forgiveness, he did this before we were here. So too do we need to be forgiving and compassionate toward those who sin against us, especially those who are within our spiritual family or in our physical family.
00:17:45
Speaker
