Introduction to Daily Bible Reading

00:00:03
Speaker
Hey, everybody. Thank you for joining me. Today is September 9th, and you are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. And together, we are here for our daily Bible reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:19
Speaker
If you are new and just finding this popping up in your feed, don't stop it yet. This is not just an event for kids. This event is for everybody. It's simply written at a level that we can all understand.
00:00:32
Speaker
But it's a pretty complete version of the entire Bible. This is the complete Bible from Genesis to Revelation in chronological order.

Importance of Daily Application

00:00:42
Speaker
So we only have one account that's been consolidated from all of the accounts in one continuous timeline.
00:00:49
Speaker
Not only that, but every day we have daily application for how today's reading can be used in our life today. So stick around. Don't just click stop or next.
00:01:00
Speaker
Check us out. I think you will like what you hear. If you have been here a while, then you may be using your commitment calendar or your bookmarking calendar. Go ahead and take that out.
00:01:11
Speaker
You're ready to mark off September 9th because we're about to read the Bible today.

A Lesson on Belief and Healing

00:01:19
Speaker
Today we have something very important to read about. We will see a man who at first took his son to be healed by the disciples. He was looking for Jesus, but he came and found the disciples because Jesus was busy with Peter, James, and John somewhere else.
00:01:38
Speaker
And when he asked them to remove a bad spirit from his son, they were not able to do so. And when he gets to Jesus, he asks Jesus to help him if he can.
00:01:53
Speaker
And Jesus will tell him, if I can, anything is possible for those who believe. And the man replies, yes, I do believe. Help me get past the part of me that doesn't believe.
00:02:09
Speaker
This is very important. In our walk of faith, we are learning that everything is possible. But we may still be thinking, well, I can't do that. But everything is possible for those of us who believe.
00:02:24
Speaker
Jesus will tell us that it takes faith just as small as a mustard seed, which doesn't seem like very much. But we may need help to ask Jesus to get us past the part of us that doesn't believe.
00:02:39
Speaker
So this is our encouragement today. So let's watch for that today in our reading. Another thing we're going to be seeing in our reading today is that we have been learning throughout the year that God treats his people differently than he does those who do not believe in him.
00:02:57
Speaker
And we've been learning that if we seek him first in his kingdom, he will provide for us. And today we will be seeing Jesus provided for by God as well as Peter.
00:03:12
Speaker
Are you ready for today's reading? i know I am. I think I said earlier that today was September 9th. Today is the 8th of September. It is the ninth month. Sorry about that. I can't remember if I said that incorrectly.
00:03:25
Speaker
But today

The Transfiguration of Jesus

00:03:26
Speaker
is September 8th.
00:03:29
Speaker
Our first section is entitled, As White as Light. And I love that in the book of Matthew, he records that Jesus was so white, he was whiter than any launderer could bleach.
00:03:46
Speaker
I love that description. Now, this takes place six days approximately after Jesus had just taught us yesterday's lesson. So six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and they went up on a high mountain.
00:04:03
Speaker
And all of a sudden, Jesus changed. It happened right in front of Peter, James, and John. Jesus's face started shining.
00:04:17
Speaker
It was as bright as the sun and his clothes turned as white as light. Then Moses and Elijah showed up and they talked with Jesus.
00:04:31
Speaker
Lord, said Peter, it's wonderful to be here. And if you want, i can make three tents here. One for you, i can make one for Moses, and I'll make one for Elijah.
00:04:45
Speaker
Then a bright cloud came down around them, and a voice came from the cloud. And this is what it said. This is my son.
00:04:58
Speaker
he is the son I love. I am happy with him. Listen to him.
00:05:07
Speaker
Peter, James, and John fell to the ground and they did not look up. They were afraid. But Jesus came over and he touched them. You can get up, he said.
00:05:19
Speaker
Don't be afraid. They looked up and they saw no one there except Jesus. Then they all came down the mountain

Faith's Power and the Need for Prayer

00:05:29
Speaker
and Jesus told them, Do not tell anybody what you just saw.
00:05:35
Speaker
I will die, but I will come back to life and then you can tell about it.
00:05:43
Speaker
Now the Jewish leaders say that Elijah has to come first, they said. Why? they asked Jesus. Elijah already came, said Jesus.
00:05:54
Speaker
They didn't know him. They treated him the way they wanted to, and they will treat me badly too. Then Jesus' friends understood what he was saying.
00:06:07
Speaker
He was talking about John, who had baptized people. Jesus was calling him Elijah. elijah Peter, James, and John did what Jesus asked, and they did not tell anybody what they saw on the mountain.
00:06:25
Speaker
Jesus walked back with Peter, James, and John, and they looked for their other friends. They found them with a big crowd around them. Some teachers of God's law were there too, and the teachers were fussing at Jesus' friends.
00:06:41
Speaker
When the people saw Jesus, they ran to meet him. What are you fussing about? asked Jesus. And one man said, I brought my son here to see you.
00:06:53
Speaker
a bad spirit controls him. It won't let him talk. It throws him to the ground and his teeth rub together. His arms and legs get tight. I asked your friends to send the spirit away, but they couldn't.
00:07:08
Speaker
You people don't believe in me, said Jesus. How long will I have to put up with you? Bring me the boy. So they brought the boy to Jesus.
00:07:19
Speaker
And when the spirit saw Jesus, it threw the boy down. He fell on the ground and he rolled around. How long has he been like this, asked Jesus.
00:07:32
Speaker
This started when he was very little, said his father, and sometimes the bad spirit throws him into the fire. Sometimes it throws him into the water. It tries to kill him. Please be kind to him.
00:07:45
Speaker
Help us if you can. and If I can, said Jesus, everything is possible for the person who believes. ths I do believe, said the father.
00:07:59
Speaker
Help me get past the part of me that doesn't believe. Now Jesus saw that a crowd was gathering, so he talked to the bad spirit. He said, you, spirit, come out of that boy and never go into him again.

Temple Tax and God's Provision

00:08:15
Speaker
The spirit yelled and it shook the boy. Then it came out. The boy looked like he was dead. And that's what many people thought.
00:08:27
Speaker
They even said, he is dead. But Jesus took the boy's hand And then the boy stood up. Jesus went into a house and his friends asked him, why couldn't we send the spirit away?
00:08:44
Speaker
It's because your faith is very small, said Jesus. Even faith the size of a mustard seed is strong. And with it, you can move a mountain.
00:08:58
Speaker
You can say, move from here to there. And it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. But this kind of spirit comes out only by prayer.
00:09:15
Speaker
Now Jesus and his friends traveled through Galilee. And Jesus was teaching these friends. He didn't want anybody to know where they were. This is what he said.
00:09:27
Speaker
One of my 12 special friends will turn against me, said Jesus. He will take the money from some of the leaders, and then he will show them where i am, and they will kill me.
00:09:41
Speaker
But on the third day, I will come back to life. Jesus' friends did not understand what he was talking about, and they were afraid to ask Jesus about it.
00:09:54
Speaker
They came to the town of Capernaum, and there some taxmen saw them and came up to Peter. They said, Doesn't Jesus pay the worship house tax?
00:10:06
Speaker
Yes, he does, said Peter. Then Peter went to Jesus, but Jesus talked first. do you think, Peter?
00:10:18
Speaker
He said. Who do kings get taxes from? Do they get taxes from their own family? Or do they get taxes from other people?
00:10:30
Speaker
From other people, said Peter. Then their own family doesn't pay taxes, said Jesus. But we don't want to make these men mad, our big Bible says, so that we do not offend them.
00:10:46
Speaker
Go fishing. Throw your line out into the lake and take the first fish that you catch. Open its mouth and look inside. You will find money in there.
00:10:58
Speaker
Then you can pay our taxes.

Reflections on Belief and Provision

00:11:02
Speaker
When he says our taxes, in our big Bible, it tells us that the money will be enough to pay for both Jesus' tax and Peter's as well.
00:11:16
Speaker
I love today's reading. Did you love today's reading? There is so much in today's reading. Every day has so much. And it just seems like every day just gets better and better.
00:11:28
Speaker
And I think that's because our understanding is growing. Our eyes are opening more and our ears are opening more. And the Holy Spirit is giving us understanding so that we can understand God's big picture and learn everything that he is teaching us.
00:11:45
Speaker
We are going to be so well equipped this year. What is God going to do with us next year for what he is equipping us here to today and this year? I'm so curious. Let's go back to the beginning.
00:11:58
Speaker
So Jesus was transfigured. That is what we are referring to when we said that Jesus became as white as light. That was showing him in his glory like he was when he went back into heaven.
00:12:12
Speaker
And in that time, God's voice came and spoke. And Peter, James, and John heard God's voice. What did God tell them? He said, this is my son.
00:12:26
Speaker
he is the son i love. i am happy with him. Listen to him. We saw this same thing happen when Jesus was baptized.
00:12:39
Speaker
But I don't remember him saying, listen to him. He said, in him, I am well pleased. God is giving us the direction to listen to Jesus.
00:12:50
Speaker
This direction is not just for Peter, James, and John. This direction is for us as well. We are to listen to Jesus. Number one, our first daily application is to listen to Jesus.
00:13:04
Speaker
Everything else will follow. Then Jesus tells us, that anything is possible for those who believe. Nothing will be impossible for us.
00:13:16
Speaker
If we are not able to do things, it is because our faith is not big enough. We need to believe and have faith. One of the things that I've always ah believed and taught my daughter is that there is nothing standing in the way between us and what we need to do except our own selves.
00:13:38
Speaker
meaning that we can talk ourselves out of things. We can let our mind and and Satan can discourage us, but it's inside of us. We are the ones that are keeping us from believing.
00:13:51
Speaker
And this man wisely says to Jesus, help me with the part that does not believe. Help me get past the part of me that doesn't believe.
00:14:05
Speaker
May that be our prayer today when we are having trouble. Let us remember to pray and ask Jesus, help me get past the part of me that doesn't believe.
00:14:17
Speaker
That is very important. That is our big second daily application. We want to believe, but it can be so incredible to believe that these things are possible with us because who are we? We're not important.
00:14:33
Speaker
But God says, and Jesus says, that is not so. We are children of the living God. His Holy Spirit lives inside of us. And because of that, everything is possible for those who believe.

Encouragement to Spread God's Teachings

00:14:48
Speaker
And keep in mind that Jesus said this before the Holy Spirit had even been given to them.
00:14:56
Speaker
Anything is possible for the person who believes. We've said this several times, but this lesson bears repeating, and we see it in our daily reading.
00:15:09
Speaker
Then we see that God took care of Jesus and Peter by paying the temple tax for them. Wasn't that amazing? a fish had swallowed the money enough to pay the temple tax for both Jesus and Peter. And Jesus told Peter to go get the first fish and it would be that one.
00:15:28
Speaker
Because God is in charge of everything. Nothing is impossible for God. He knows everything and he is in charge of everything. God's hand is on you.
00:15:41
Speaker
it is on me. every day he takes care of those who belong to him. Jesus says that the son doesn't need to pay the taxes, that the children don't pay the king's taxes.
00:15:54
Speaker
Now he's not saying that we don't need to pay our taxes. He's saying that the temple tax is what this was referring to. So it is a tax to God, essentially, for the temple. And this was talked about in Deuteronomy, I think, in Leviticus.
00:16:09
Speaker
And they had imposed a temple tax to help pay for things. But God sent his son, Jesus. And so Jesus says that, When the the earthly king's sons don't pay the tax, why would the heavenly son pay for the heavenly king's tax?
00:16:26
Speaker
And God provided that. He said, but so we do not offend them. So we don't make them angry. We will pay it. And this will go along later with our teaching that says, insofar as it is possible for us to be at peace with everyone around us.
00:16:43
Speaker
Don't be confrontational. Jesus was following all of the rules, even though it may not necessarily apply to him, he is saying. He says, we will do it. And not only that, but God will pay for yours too.
00:16:57
Speaker
God is so wonderful. I love God. He just does so many amazing things. Nothing is impossible for him. Well, I don't know about you, but God has lit me pretty brightly today.
00:17:09
Speaker
Maybe not as brightly as Jesus was transfigured today.

Conclusion and Invitation to Next Session

00:17:12
Speaker
Brighter than any launderer could bleach. But I hope so. I hope that we are all shining our lights and clicking that light button so that other people can see and and hear ah God's word. We want to spread the word about reading God's word.
00:17:31
Speaker
We want people to be encouraged and know that nothing is impossible for anyone, not you and not the person that God is putting on your heart to share this with. Thank you very much for joining me for today's reading.
00:17:44
Speaker
Thank you for lighting your, ah for showing your light and not keeping it under a bushel or under a basket. i always want to say a bushel, but it's a basket. and let our light shine high up on that hill so that we can be the light of the world and tell other people about Jesus.
00:18:02
Speaker
Let's tell other people the work of the Lord is to listen to the one who sent him, to obey his son, and to believe in the one who sent him.
00:18:15
Speaker
Thank you so much for being here. i hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever day you have gotten around to hearing or watching this September 8th reading. And I will be here for you, everybody again, for tomorrow's reading.
00:18:26
Speaker
So if you are new, come back. We will be here tomorrow. Thank you for being here. Bye-bye.
