Today's reading will cover the Book of John Chapter 8.

Be prepared to cheer Jesus on today as He grants grace to a woman who sinned, tells the Pharisees who He is, who His Father is, where He came from, and WHEN He came from, as well as where He is going. We have an especially eye opening reading today as Jesus helps us put together many pieces in place so we can understand God's "Big Picture" this year. We will learn about and discuss what John 1:1 means as John tells us that in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word WAS God. He (Jesus) was with God in the beginning. We will put this together with Psalm 119:105-106 which tells us that God's Word is a light for our feet and a light for our path as Jesus explains to us today that HE IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.

We will also learn today that Jesus sets us free from sin, and that if He, being the Son, sets us free from sin, WE ARE FREE INDEED! Hallelujah! (which means Praise God!) In our discussion we will talk about how like the woman Jesus granted grace to in our reading today and told her "don't sin anymore," we, too, are not to remain in our sins, repeating the same things over and over again. We are free of them so we need to act like it and stop doing the things that we know are wrong. We do. not need to listen to the father of lies, who tells us that we will never change or can't change. Jesus has set us free and God's Holy Spirit lives within us, transforming us from the inside out.

Today we will learn that to truly be one of Jesus' students (disciples) we need to abide (live) in His Word. Doing this will give us eternal life, which is life in the spirit, not the physical life that we may want to be attached to. Jesus already taught us that eternal life is of the Spirit, not the physical body. If we work to save our physical life and lose our spiritual life then we have wasted our time. We need to keep "the big picture" in mind- spiritual life, rather than physical life.

And you can find that at inthefamilywaycoaching.com. Click on that very first tab for Read the Bible in One Year. And then right there, don't go any further.
00:01:39
Speaker
If you click on Read the Bible in One Year... you will find my downloadable calendar.
00:01:46
Speaker
Well today i am super excited because I don't know about you but we have been watching The leaders just bother at Jesus and and insult him and just try to discredit him.
00:02:03
Speaker
They are seeking to kill him. And Jesus doesn't say whole lot in his defense. He gives them a little. But today... Today, Jesus really lets them have it.
00:02:16
Speaker
And when he does, it's going to give us some pieces of our big puzzle, our big picture that we are going through as we read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation this year.
00:02:29
Speaker
We are going to have understanding and our light is going to come on as we hear what Jesus is going to tell us today. So in order to understand today's reading, I'm going to give us a little bit of Old Covenant.
00:02:45
Speaker
And that is in Psalm 119, verses 105 through I think 106. In that Psalm, you may not be familiar with the number, but if I sing it to you, you will know.
00:02:58
Speaker
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
00:03:11
Speaker
So what is the light that is our path, that lights our path and lights our feet so we can see to walk? God's word. John 1 verse 1, he tells us, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
00:03:34
Speaker
And that is a gorgeous verse, but you know what? That can be so confusing. I've always thought that verse was confusing. It goes on to say, he was with God in the beginning.
00:03:46
Speaker
So in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. I've always thought that that verse was confusing. What does that mean?
00:03:56
Speaker
How did Jesus be the Word? Here, Jesus tells us today, God has opened my eyes and my ears today, and I was so excited because today Jesus is going to tell us that he is the light of the world and that anyone who listens to his Word will not die.
00:04:16
Speaker
So now understand.
00:04:20
Speaker
love that. i love that. And so we are going to be learning about the big picture again today. We are going to be having more of our puzzle pieces put together so that we can understand God's big picture for us.
00:04:35
Speaker
And Jesus is a big part of that picture. So let's head into our Bible reading today. Today, are going to kind of pick up with what Jesus talked about yesterday as well.
00:04:49
Speaker
You may remember that yesterday, Jesus said that this was not his teaching, that it comes from God and God sent him. And Jesus said that if I speak just for me, then I make myself important.
00:05:03
Speaker
But if I make God important, what I say is true. Today, Jesus is going to talk a little bit more about that as well.
00:05:15
Speaker
So now Jesus was at the worship house by sunrise the next day. And remember, this was at the conclusion of the festival of tents. And lots of people had gathered around him.
00:05:26
Speaker
So there were a lot of people who had gathered in the area where he was in Judea because of the festival. So he had a big audience available to him. And he sat down and he began teaching them.
00:05:41
Speaker
But the worship house leaders pushed a woman in front of him. They had found her sleeping with a man the way that a wife would. And this man was not her husband.
00:05:52
Speaker
And so now here she was in front of everyone. We found this woman sleeping with a man the way a wife would, and he isn't her husband, they told Jesus.
00:06:03
Speaker
And

Spiritual Freedom and Sin

00:06:04
Speaker
the law says that we are to throw so rocks at her to make her die for that. What do you say about it? The leaders were trying to trap Jesus with their question, and they wanted to have a reason to blame him for what he said.
00:06:21
Speaker
Jesus bent down. He started writing in the dirt with his finger. But they kept on asking him about it, so Jesus stood up tall.
00:06:34
Speaker
Is there anyone here who has never sinned? He asked them. If you have never sinned, you can go first, and you can be the first to throw a rock at her.
00:06:48
Speaker
Then Jesus bent down again, and he wrote in the dirt some more. Well, people started leaving, one at a time. The older people left first, and soon only Jesus was left and the woman who was still standing there.
00:07:05
Speaker
"'Where did everyone go?' Jesus asked. "'Is there anyone left to blame you for what you have done?' "'No one, sir,' she said. "'Then I will not blame you,' said Jesus. "'Go on home, but do not sin any more.'"
00:07:26
Speaker
Now our next section is about the world's light. Now, we may have never thought that we have ever been slaves, but the truth is, is that we have been slaves.
00:07:39
Speaker
Anyone who sins, Jesus tells us, is a slave to sin. So what does that mean? That means that the sin is telling us what to do, and we just do it because we want to, or because we feel like we can't help it. It's just the way we do things.
00:07:55
Speaker
just the way we are. But Jesus is going to tell us how we can be set free. Now Jesus talked to the people at the worship house again.
00:08:08
Speaker
I am the world's light, he said. Follow me, and then you won't live in the dark. You will have the light of life.
00:08:20
Speaker
You are telling about yourself, said the leader, so what you say can't be true. I may be telling about myself, said Jesus. Still, what I say is true.
00:08:32
Speaker
And the law says to have two people tell about something. And then you know it's true. So I tell you about myself and my father tells you about me also.
00:08:46
Speaker
That makes two. Where is your father? They asked. You don't know me. said Jesus, and you don't know my father.
00:08:58
Speaker
If you knew me, then you would know my father. Who are you? They asked. I am just who I said I am, Jesus told them.
00:09:12
Speaker
You will lift me up, and then you will know i am who I said i was. Many people believed in Jesus, and Keep believing what I am teaching, Jesus told them, and keep obeying me.
00:09:28
Speaker
And then you will really be my followers. You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.
00:09:40
Speaker
We've never been anybody's slaves, they said, so how could we be set free? Anybody who sins is a slave to sin, said Jesus.
00:09:51
Speaker
And a slave is not one of the family. Only a son belongs to the family forever. So if the son sets you free, you really are free.
00:10:04
Speaker
I know you're ready to kill me, said Jesus. And you don't have any room in your hearts for my word. I do what I have heard from my father and you do what you have heard from your father.
00:10:18
Speaker
Our father from long ago was Abraham, they said. Then you should do what Abraham would have done, said Jesus. You want to kill me and Abraham did not do things like that.
00:10:32
Speaker
At least we have a father, they said, and only our true father is God. Well, then you should love me, said Jesus, because I came from God.
00:10:44
Speaker
But you belong to your father, the devil. You do what he says. He was a killer from the very beginning, and he never had a bit of truth in him.
00:10:57
Speaker
Lies are the language he speaks. He is a liar, and he is the father of lies. I tell the truth, said Jesus, but you don't believe me.
00:11:08
Speaker
If you belong to God, then hear what God says. You don't hear because you don't belong to God. We are right, said the leaders. You have a bad spirit who controls you.
00:11:22
Speaker
No, said Jesus, I am following my father and making him the important one. And now he wants to make me important one.
00:11:34
Speaker
He is the judge. And if you obey my word, you will never die. Now we know a bad spirit controls you, they said. Abraham died and all the prophets died, but you say that whoever obeys your word will never die. Are you greater than Abraham?
00:11:53
Speaker
He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are? My father is the one you call your God, said Jesus. He makes me the important one.
00:12:08
Speaker
Your father Abraham was happy to think about seeing me here. He did see this and he was glad. You're not even 50 years old, the leader said. When did you see Abraham?
00:12:22
Speaker
The truth is, said Jesus, I lived before Abraham lived, before he was born. And when Jesus said that, they picked up rocks to throw at him.
00:12:37
Speaker
But Jesus hid, and then he quietly left the worship house.
00:12:43
Speaker
Do you not just want to start cheering? Do you want to just stand up and say, yeah, ah it's about time he told them. i know I do. ah i was so excited.
00:12:54
Speaker
And I want to encourage you ah to take your time to go into your big Bible and to spend some time in this reading today. Today we have read John chapter 8.
00:13:05
Speaker
We read the entire chapter. And i I am just really wanting to actually read that so we can see how closely our reading parallels it, but to also see some of the fine details that are in our reading today.
00:13:21
Speaker
Jesus actually told them, I am. Remember, we have talked about that and that's in our big Bible. Jesus told them, I am Jesus is explaining to them that he is God.
00:13:37
Speaker
When God gave them his his name, he said, I am who I am. i am. God just is. That is God's name. i am.
00:13:49
Speaker
Jesus is telling them, i am And I was before Abraham was born. He was with God in the beginning.
00:14:02
Speaker
He is the light of the world. He is the word made flesh. Are you understanding God's word today? Are your ears opening? Are your eyes seeing?
00:14:15
Speaker
i love how Jesus told us today that he was not of the world. I know that that was in our reading today too. I'm going to actually read part of that in our John chapter 8 out of the big Bible, because this is also where Jesus tells us that he is the he is not of this world.
00:14:43
Speaker
Starting in verse 12 is where Jesus has this conversation with the leaders. Jesus spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will no longer walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
00:15:01
Speaker
Just like Psalm 119 tells us, God's word is a light for our path and a light for our feet. He shows us the way is what that means. god Jesus shows us the way to eternal life.
00:15:15
Speaker
He lights the path for us. He is the light of the world. In him there is no darkness.
00:15:25
Speaker
Then the Pharisees said to him, you are testifying about yourself. So your testimony is not valid. And Jesus answered them saying, even if I testify about myself, my testimony is valid for I know where I came from and where I am going.
00:15:42
Speaker
But you don't know where I come from or where I am going. You judge according to the flesh, but I do not judge any anyone. Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, because it is not I alone, but I with the Father who sent me.
00:16:04
Speaker
Even in your Torah it is written that the testimony of two men is true. i am one witness for myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness for me.
00:16:16
Speaker
Then they said to him, Where is your Father? And Jesus answered, Yes. You know neither me nor my father. If you knew me, you would also know my father.
00:16:28
Speaker
Remember, Jesus told us that if we believe in him and believe in the one who sent him, that we are honoring and worshiping God.
00:16:38
Speaker
Now he spoke these words in the treasury while teaching in the temple, but no one arrested him because his hour had not yet come.

True Discipleship

00:16:47
Speaker
Then again, just Jesus spoke to them saying, I am going away and you will look for me and you will die in your sin. And where I am going, you cannot come.
00:16:59
Speaker
He won't kill himself, will he? The Judeans asked. Is that why he says where I am going, you cannot come? But Yeshua, Jesus said, you are from below.
00:17:11
Speaker
I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world. So this is where we get the phrase, not of this world.
00:17:23
Speaker
When we have Jesus's spirit, God's Holy spirit living in us, we are to not be of this world, slaves to our sin, but we are set free from it.
00:17:36
Speaker
To be not of this world,
00:17:40
Speaker
He says, therefore, I told you that you will die in your sins. If you don't believe that I am, here he is telling them that he is, i am. If you don't believe that I am,
00:17:53
Speaker
you will die in your sins. That is because Jesus paid the price for our sins. And if we do not accept his salvation, his gift of salvation, then we will die in our sins.
00:18:06
Speaker
That is what not accepting the light of the world means. If we choose not to accept him as our salvation, then we die in our sins and we get what we asked for, eternal separation from God.
00:18:22
Speaker
So they asked him, who are you? And Jesus replied, what have I been telling you from the beginning? have much to say and judge about you, but the one who sent me is true.
00:18:34
Speaker
And I tell the world what I heard from him. Remember, we learned in the old covenant that God would teach people now. God's spirit teaches us.
00:18:46
Speaker
And they didn't understand that he was talking to them about the father. So Jesus said to them, When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know who I am.
00:18:59
Speaker
i do nothing by myself but speak just what the Father has taught me. Here we have him telling us that God taught him. The one who sent me is with me, and he has not left me alone because I always do what is pleasing to him.
00:19:19
Speaker
Jesus never did anything that was not pleasing to God. We also need to work to do what is pleasing to God. As he was speaking these things, many people put their trust in him.
00:19:33
Speaker
And I pray that if you have not done so already, that you also put your trust in the one who is the light of the world and the salvation for our sins.
00:19:44
Speaker
Then Jesus said to the Judeans who had trusted him, If you abide in my word, if you live in my word, then you are truly my disciples.
00:19:56
Speaker
Jesus will tell us later that we are to go and make disciples of all the earth.

Passover and Spiritual Freedom

00:20:01
Speaker
We are to be disciples. We are to be students of Jesus. We are to be looking to him as our teacher to teach us the way to live our lives.
00:20:12
Speaker
Jesus tells us that if we live in his word, then we are truly his disciples. I pray that you are truly living in God's word, in Jesus's words, and obeying what he is teaching us so that you will truly be a student, a disciple.
00:20:31
Speaker
It is not to go and make converts to Christianity. I understand this may be controversial to some as seeing it. Well, that's the Great Commission. The Great Commission is to go and make disciples.
00:20:43
Speaker
It is not to make people Christian. Christian is a human name, a word that we have given to describe those who believe in Jesus. But the biblical terminology for those of us who are not juddith Jewish, believing in the Messiah, is a Gentile believer in the Messiah.
00:21:01
Speaker
So we are to go and make disciples, and we want to be true disciples. And we are true disciples if we abide in his word. He says, then we will know the truth and the truth will set us free.
00:21:19
Speaker
We celebrate Passover and it's not something that most of us do. And I've started to do that starting this year. I did that. And we think, well, it's just a remembrance of when God sent, uh, set the Israelites free from the Egyptian people.
00:21:36
Speaker
But you see, Jesus is explaining here that Passover is relevant for all of us because Jesus was the Passover lamb. that came and that was signified, it was symbolized by the Passover lamb that was slain for the Passover, where God's judgment would pass over those who had the blood of the lamb marked out on the top and sides of the doorpost.
00:22:04
Speaker
Jesus became that sacrificial lamb. And while we may not have been slaves to Egypt, we were slaves to our sin. And Jesus set us free.
00:22:17
Speaker
And by his blood, God's judgment will pass over us. And this is why it is still relevant and important that we as Gentile believers in the Messiah observe the Passover festival, as well as the other festivals as well, which also are significant because Jesus is pointed to in all of them.
00:22:41
Speaker
So the leaders answered him, we are Abraham's children and have never been slaves to anyone. How can you say you will become free? And Jesus answered them, amen, amen. I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
00:23:01
Speaker
Now the slave does not remain in the household forever, but the son abides forever. So if the son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
00:23:12
Speaker
Praise God. Jesus he is assuring us. but He says, if I have set you free, you are free indeed. If you are a believer in Jesus today, you have been set free from your sins.
00:23:26
Speaker
We are to be transformed by a renewing of our mind. God will put his spirit in us and he changes us from the inside out.
00:23:38
Speaker
He releases us from the bonds of sin so that we are not slaves to sin. Now, the father of lies will tell us that we are still slaves to sin.
00:23:49
Speaker
And we learned today that he has never spoken the truth. That is who he is.

Divine Authority and Spiritual Blindness

00:23:54
Speaker
When he lies, he's just being who he is. He said, you have been set free from your sins.
00:24:01
Speaker
You are not a slave to them. You do not have to keep living in sin. Just like Jesus told the woman today that we saw who was found committing sin. He told her, neither will I condemn you.
00:24:16
Speaker
Now go and don't sin anymore. Just don't do it. You don't have to do it. You have been set free. You have the choice to not do it.
00:24:30
Speaker
I know you are Abraham's children, Jesus says, yet you are trying to kill me because my word has no place in you. I tell of what I have seen with the father, and so also you do what you heard from the father.
00:24:46
Speaker
Abraham is our father, they so replied to him. And Jesus said to them, then if you are Abraham's children, then do the deeds of Abraham. But now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God.
00:25:02
Speaker
And this is something Abraham did not do. Meaning Abraham did not kill people. You are doing the deeds of your father. And they replied to him saying, we were not born as illegitimate children. We have one father, God himself.
00:25:21
Speaker
And Jesus said to them, if God were your father, then you would love me. For from God I came and now I am here.
00:25:33
Speaker
For I have not come on my own, but he sent to me. God sent Jesus. God loved the world so much that he sent Jesus to be the savior of the world, his only son. And we know that Jesus is God's son because two times, once when he was baptized and second, when he went went through what we call the transfiguration, where he said, this is my son and in him, I am well pleased.
00:26:04
Speaker
And Jesus tells us again here, he always does what pleases the father.
00:26:12
Speaker
Why don't you understand my speech? Jesus tells them, because you're not able to hear my word. You are of your father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father.
00:26:24
Speaker
He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks lies, he is just being himself, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
00:26:42
Speaker
But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sinning? If I am telling the truth, then why don't you believe me?
00:26:56
Speaker
He who belongs to God hears the words of God. And the reason you do not hear is because you do not belong to God. May everybody who is here today listening have ears to hear and eyes to see, to hear God's truth and know that Jesus is the Savior of the world, that he was sent from god Then the Judean leaders responded, aren't we right to say that you are a Samaritan? So now they're just resorting to name calling and put downs.
00:27:30
Speaker
And you have a demon. Now remember, they are now committing blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. We learned about that. They are committing blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
00:27:41
Speaker
They are calling God's Holy Spirit to be of the devil. And that is what we are told is the one sin that will never ever be forgiven, not in this life or the next.
00:27:54
Speaker
And this is why Jesus has told them they will die in their sin.
00:28:00
Speaker
Jesus answered, I do not have a demon. I honor my father, yet you dishonor me. But I do not seek my own glory. There is one who is seeking and judging. And amen, amen. I tell you, if any anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.
00:28:21
Speaker
Now we know you have a demon, the Judean leader said to him. Oh boy, their blasphemy, it just gets worse and worse, doesn't it? Abraham and the prophets died, yet you say, if anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.
00:28:37
Speaker
You are not greater than our father Abraham who died, are you? The prophets also died. Who do you make yourself out to He's already told them who he makes himself out to be.
00:28:51
Speaker
Jesus answered, if I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. And this is the same thing about what he told us yesterday. He told us yesterday, remember, that this is not my teaching. It comes from God.
00:29:07
Speaker
If I speak just for me, then I make myself important. But if I make God important, what I say is true. So Jesus is consistent and he tells them yet again, if I glorify myself, my glory is nothing.
00:29:23
Speaker
We too are not meant to glorify ourselves. We are meant to glorify our father in heaven. We are not meant to glorify ourselves. Our glory is nothing.
00:29:36
Speaker
Even Jesus did not come to glorify himself. He came to glorify the father and it is the father who glorifies Jesus.
00:29:46
Speaker
My father who gives me glory, the one of whom you say he is our God. It is my father who gives me glory, the one of whom you say he is our God.
00:29:57
Speaker
Yet you do not know him, but I know him. If I say I do not know him, then I will be a liar like you.

Conclusion and Reflection

00:30:05
Speaker
Ooh, I liked that one.

If I say I don't know God, then I would be a liar like you. I was like, yeah, tell it, Jesus. Tell him off. If I say i do not know him, I will be a liar like you. Yet I do know him and keep his word.

Are we faithful to keep God's word? That word which is a light to our feet and the light for our path? Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day, meaning Jesus's day.
00:30:40
Speaker
He saw it and was thrilled. ah Then the Judeans said to him, you're not even 50 years old and you've seen Abraham? And Jesus answered them, Amen, amen. I tell you, before Abraham was, I am.

Again, Jesus is affirming, in the beginning, he was with God. He is, i am. Jesus is God. He is God's son. He was born of God's spirit in the flesh.
00:31:12
Speaker
But before that, he was with God. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.

and So I hope that you enjoyed today's reading, that you understand our daily application. Just to recap, our daily application, in short, is to believe that Jesus is the light of the world.

And he is the sun. And if he has set us free from sin. We are no longer a slave to sin. Go and don't sin. That doesn't mean we are perfect.
00:32:33
Speaker
That's not what that means. It means that we do not have to keep repeating and living in the same sins every single day and doing the same things we've been doing. It means that we can change.
00:32:46
Speaker
We can do what God wants us to do. We can do what pleases God. That should be our a daily application every day is to make God the most important one, to glorify him and do what he wants us to do.
00:33:01
Speaker
Because Jesus tells us that if we save our physical life, but lose our spiritual life, what good is that? We need to be looking at the big picture.
00:33:12
Speaker
This year we are learning about the big picture. And the big picture is eternal life, not just our physical life. As the Pharisees pointed out today, everybody's physical life will end.
00:33:25
Speaker
And Jesus told us that life is not through the body. Life is through the spirit. He is like food for our spirit. He is the light that shows us how to walk in this world.
00:33:38
Speaker
We are not of this world. We are like Jesus. We are not of this world. but And so let's not act like we are of this world, just living in our sin, being slaves to it.
00:33:50
Speaker
We are set free. So go forth in your day today feeling set free and joyful from the Holy Spirit with your light shining so that everybody can see it.
00:34:02
Speaker
Let us light those lights up bright today too to put Jesus high. We want to see Jesus lifted up high. He is our light and our Savior.
00:34:14
