Today's reading we will cover Luke Chapters 11:53-12:48. Today we will be warned against several things: being hypocritical by telling people they should be doing things but not doing those things ourselves, telling people that we do not know Jesus (and then Jesus will tell the angels in heaven that He does not know US), focusing on accumulating material possessions, and not being ready for Jesus' return, which will occur at a time that we do not know. In today's reading Jesus tells us that it is good to be found doing the work we are supposed to be doing when He returns, and that those who know what to do but don't do it will be in trouble for it. Even those people who don't know what He expects will be in trouble for not obeying,  but the consequence will not be as bad.

For our daily application today, it is important that we be doing the good works that God has prepared for us to do so that when He returns He will find us busy in our work. Jesus will teach us how to "become fishers of men." He will teach us to be who God created us to be so that the work God has given us is a joy for us to do, rather than just chores to dread. It is important that we are obeying Jesus and telling others about Him. We need to be sure that we are using what God gives us for the work He has prepared for us to do. If God gives us things it is not so we can store things up and be wealthy with material things or money. It is so we can share these things with others. The more God gives us the more we have to give away!

Speaker
Hey everyone, today is August 29th and know why you're here. I'm here for the same reason. We are here for our daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:17
Speaker
I'm glad that you're here today. i was hoping you would show up.
00:00:22
Speaker
If you are using your commitment calendar to mark your days, go ahead and get that out. Get that sticker, get that pen, whatever you're using, and mark it off because I bet you're about to hear the Bible today.

Teachings of Jesus and the Holy Spirit

00:00:39
Speaker
Today we are continuing in our Gospels. We are learning from Jesus himself. Oh, I love it. And the Holy Spirit is teaching us too.
00:00:50
Speaker
The Holy Spirit will remind us of everything that we need to know at the time that we need to know it. And Jesus is going to tell us about that today.
00:01:01
Speaker
Of course, he'll also tell us about other stuff too.
00:01:05
Speaker
All

Hypocrisy of Jewish Leaders

00:01:06
Speaker
right. Well, now if you remember from yesterday's daily reading, Jesus had told the Pharisees how sad things would be for them because they had taken away the key from the people so that they were inhibiting.
00:01:21
Speaker
They were making it difficult for people to know and love God by making all of these rules. And Jesus told them that that wasn't right. So now we're going to pick up and it says that now the Jewish leaders began to talk very sharply about Jesus.
00:01:38
Speaker
And they asked him many questions because they were just waiting for him to say something wrong because they wanted to trap him in his own words.
00:01:49
Speaker
But thousands of people were gathering and the people in the crowds were pushing. They were even stepping on each other. Then Jesus began to talk.
00:02:02
Speaker
First he talked to his followers. He said, watch out. What the leaders say and do isn't right. He was referring, and in our big Bible it says that they were being hypocrites.
00:02:16
Speaker
meaning that they were teaching one thing, but not obeying it themselves. One day people will know everything that has been hidden.
00:02:27
Speaker
Things you said in the dark will be told in daylight. And you may whisper in someone's ear. You may have whispered in someone's ear, said Jesus, and you may have said it in a room inside a house.
00:02:42
Speaker
But what you said will be shouted from the roof.
00:02:48
Speaker
Don't be afraid of people who can kill your body. After that, they can't do anything else, said Jesus. I'll tell you who you should be afraid of. Be afraid of the one who can do more.
00:02:59
Speaker
He can kill the body, but he can also throw you into hell. Yes, he is the one that you need to be afraid of.

Parable of the Rich Fool

00:03:10
Speaker
You can buy five sparrows for two pennies, said Jesus. They don't cost much, but God doesn't forget any of them. God knows all about you, too.
00:03:25
Speaker
He even knows how many hairs are on your head. What about when I cut out the gray ones? Yep, he knows that, too.
00:03:36
Speaker
Minus two, minus three.
00:03:41
Speaker
Tell people you know me. said Jesus, and then will tell God's angels that know you. Are you afraid to tell people that you know me?
00:03:54
Speaker
Then I will tell God's angels I do not know you.
00:03:59
Speaker
People might bring you into the town's worship houses, said Jesus, and they might take you to see the leaders, but do not worry about what you will say to them. The Holy Spirit will tell you what to say.
00:04:15
Speaker
somebody in the crowd said, "'Teacher, tell my brother to share with me.'" "'Who made me your judge?' asked Jesus.
00:04:26
Speaker
Then he said to the people, "'Be careful. Guard yourself against wanting more and more things. Life is not made of how many things you have.'"
00:04:39
Speaker
Then Jesus told this story. A rich man grew lots of crops on his farm. "'Ah, what should I do?' said the rich man. "'I don't have a place to keep all my crops.' Then the rich man said, "'I know.
00:04:55
Speaker
I'll take down my old barns and I'll build bigger barns. And then I can store all my crops and I will have plenty of good things stored away. And they will last me for many years to come.
00:05:07
Speaker
I can eat, I can drink, I can be happy.' But God said, You are foolish. You will die tonight.
00:05:19
Speaker
Then who will get the things you kept for yourself?
00:05:24
Speaker
This is the way it is for some people, said Jesus. They are people who are not rich in giving to God. They store up things for themselves instead.

Readiness for Jesus' Return

00:05:36
Speaker
Our Big Bible puts it, so it is with the one So it is with the one who stores up treasures for himself. but is not rich in God.
00:05:49
Speaker
Be ready to help and serve, said Jesus. Being ready is like keeping your lamp turned on. Be like a servant waiting for his master, said Jesus.
00:06:02
Speaker
The master comes back from a wedding party. He taps on the door. His servants open it right away. his Their master sees the servants waiting for him, and that makes the servants look good.
00:06:16
Speaker
Then the master will serve and help them, he said. He will tell them to sit at his table, and he will wait on them. It's good if the servants are ready for him.
00:06:30
Speaker
They should be ready even if he comes at home at midnight.
00:06:35
Speaker
Now a robber comes when no one is watching, said Jesus. You need to be ready. I will come when you're not thinking about it.
00:06:47
Speaker
Peter said, Lord, is this story just for us or is it for everybody?
00:06:55
Speaker
It's for people who do what they say they will do, said Jesus. That's what a wise servant does. He does what he says he will do. His master puts him in charge of all the servants.
00:07:09
Speaker
He even gives them their food. And a good servant does what his master tells him. He will be following orders when his master comes back. His master will put him in charge of everything.
00:07:24
Speaker
Think about it, said Jesus. What if he says, ah my master is taking too long. Then he begins to eat and drink and he gets drunk and and he even beats the other servants.
00:07:41
Speaker
Then the master comes back and the servant wasn't thinking about him. And the master will throw him out. He will be sent away forever and he will go to the place where people do not believe in God.
00:07:55
Speaker
well The servant knows what his master wants, said Jesus, and if he doesn't do it, he will get in trouble. What if the servant does not know what his master wants?
00:08:10
Speaker
He will still get in trouble, but not as badly. The master may give his servant a lot, said Jesus, and then he will want his servant to give a lot too.
00:08:26
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:08:31
Speaker
That last line in our big Bible puts it this way. To those who have been given much, much will be expected

Understanding Bible Teachings: Non-Hypocrisy and Eternal Life

00:08:39
Speaker
of them.
00:08:45
Speaker
Let's see. From everyone given much, much will be required. And from the one for whom more is provided, all the more they will ask of him.
00:08:59
Speaker
So let's talk about today's reading. Let's make sure we understand what we read. Does it do us any good if we read God's word and don't understand it? Nope.
00:09:12
Speaker
Let's go back to the beginning. I'm always tempted to start at the end where we just finished reading.
00:09:18
Speaker
So Jesus says to be careful, to not be hypocritical. Don't tell others what to do when you yourself are not following. Let's make sure we're doing that or not doing that as the case may be.
00:09:34
Speaker
And whatever it is we do, we don't really have the fear like they had back then of us being killed unless you are traveling to a foreign country, such as if you would be serving in the Middle East or some other area of the world.
00:09:49
Speaker
It does happen that missionaries ah put their lives in danger. And if you find yourself called by God to go somewhere in the world where it seems that other people are saying, wow, that's really dangerous over there. You need to be careful. You could get killed.
00:10:06
Speaker
Jesus says, don't be alarmed about that. Don't worry about that. All they can do is kill your body. Remember, you have eternal life in heaven. Do what God calls you to do.
00:10:20
Speaker
And you should only worry about God. Even if you do die in the process, Jesus says to be afraid of the one who can send you to hell, not of the one who can just kill the body.
00:10:33
Speaker
The body is just a physical form. It does not have anything to do with our eternal existence. Eventually, everybody will transition into spiritual form only.
00:10:44
Speaker
And so they're just taking care of the physical form and they think that they're getting rid of the of the issue, but they don't change anything. They can never take you away from God.
00:10:58
Speaker
God, Jesus tells us that God knows us. He knows each numbered hair on our heads. That's amazing. Just like with Hagar, Ishmael's mom.
00:11:12
Speaker
And she said, you are the God who sees me. Indeed, God is the God who sees us.

Obeying God's Will and Discovering Divine Identity

00:11:19
Speaker
He doesn't just see us. He knows us.
00:11:23
Speaker
He knows you and he knows me. How much more important are we than sparrows? We are created in God's image. We are created to have his spirit dwell in us.
00:11:37
Speaker
He lives within us. He knows us.
00:11:45
Speaker
if people call us to ask If people ask us about Jesus and we're not sure what to say, pray. The Holy Spirit will tell us what to say at the right time.
00:11:58
Speaker
Don't try to do it all yourself. Ask the Holy Spirit to tell you what to say. And we want to make sure that we are telling people that we know Jesus, if we are afraid and embarrassed to be so to know to tell people that we know Jesus, then in the same way, he will not acknowledge that he knows us.
00:12:20
Speaker
Now, Jesus says that he is going to be telling the angels. I don't know what significance that holds. But it obviously does, or Jesus would not have said it.
00:12:32
Speaker
Jesus says that if we tell people that we know him, he will tell the angels that he knows us. And if we tell people we do not know him or are embarrassed and deny him, then Jesus will tell them, the angels, that he does not know us.
00:12:50
Speaker
And so Jesus doesn't say anything lightly. So if he says that, and that means he will do it. And that means it must be important in some way. Even if we don't understand everything, it is still important to have faith and trust in Jesus.
00:13:07
Speaker
Ah, be ready to help and serve. Being ready is like keeping your lamp turned on. So here, we start getting into our daily application more than just our understanding.
00:13:21
Speaker
We are to be ready for when Jesus returns. We have been waiting for over 2000 years. So the same ah admonishment, the same warning was given to the disciples way back then.
00:13:37
Speaker
And so people can think he's nowhere near coming. It's not gonna happen in my lifetime. It may not happen in our lifetime, your lifetime. That does not mean that we are not to be ready.
00:13:49
Speaker
Jesus said that we are to be ready for him, which means that we are not to become lazy or complacent, not caring about what we do. Jesus says that we need to be doing our work, even if we don't think he's coming.
00:14:05
Speaker
We need to be responsible in doing the work that God gave us to do. We are to be fair with people. We're not to treat other believers, especially it says, because here we are listed as servants.
00:14:19
Speaker
We are compared with servants. You may think, well, I'm not a servant. Well, guess what? We all have people that we have to obey. Every single one of us. Whether it is obeying your boss, whether it is obeying your mom or dad, it could be obeying a babysitter.
00:14:36
Speaker
Somebody is always over somebody else. We are always over somebody. And even if you find that that you're at the bottom and you don't have any authority over anybody else, we are still expected to do what we are expected to do.
00:14:51
Speaker
And what Jesus is talking about here with to those who have been given much, much will be expected. And to those who know their master's purpose, desires for what needs to be done and and don't do it, that means that this book here is available in pretty much all languages nowadays.
00:15:13
Speaker
And there are ways to hear it, such as on this event here. And the Holy Spirit calls people to hear God's word. And we can help do our part as well when we are called to share so that we can help spread the word about reading God's word.
00:15:32
Speaker
When we know what God wants us to do as we are learning about in this event, it means that we are now responsible for doing. what he told us to do.
00:15:43
Speaker
Jesus says, if you love me, you will obey me. We need to show our love by obeying him. So if we know good and well what to do because he is making it known to us and we deliberately choose not to do it because we think it's too hard, we don't wanna try, it's just not something we feel like doing, we say, oh, I'm never gonna be good at that or I'm just a sinful person.
00:16:12
Speaker
that's not okay. And Jesus tells us that the servant knows what his master wants. Jesus is our master.
00:16:22
Speaker
He also says we he calls us his friends. But what that means is that he is over us. We are to obey him, no matter what word we use. We know what he wants us to do. um And if we don't do it, then we will get in trouble.
00:16:36
Speaker
Now, what if we but are not aware of something that Jesus wants us to do? It says we will still get in trouble, but it will not be as badly.
00:16:49
Speaker
And the master may give his servant a lot. So to those of us who know a lot, We are expected to do a lot, not in terms of ah ah like necessarily service all the time, but when God provides us with the means and then makes us capable and enables us to do things.
00:17:13
Speaker
He gives it to us for a reason. It's it's not just so we can lavish ourselves with material items. Jesus says to to us today not to be concerned about building up material possessions because the life is more than that.
00:17:28
Speaker
Is God providing you with something extra? Then share it. We are called to be unified in his body. When God gives us things, it's not just so we can stockpile it and hoard it for ourselves.
00:17:44
Speaker
It's so that we can share and provide for others, no matter what it is. So I want to encourage us for our daily application to be ready to do what God wants us to do.
00:17:57
Speaker
to always keep in mind that we have a responsibility in this life. We don't just exist for pleasure. There's a saying that says, well, you only get one life, live it good. And that's not so. We actually also have the opportunity for eternal life.
00:18:15
Speaker
And so we are learning how to be more like Jesus and God here. That's what God wants us to do. It's not just to let, you know, spend our time on cruise ships and and lounge about acquiring material possessions.
00:18:31
Speaker
We need to be ready. God gives us work to do, so we need to do it. They're good works. And the the awesome thing about it is that he will, as we taught earlier, um he will make us fishers of men, meaning not that we are all fishers, but that whatever he created you to be like, whatever gifts and talents and desires, natural inclinations that he has given you,

Embracing God-given Identity and Responsibilities

00:18:55
Speaker
He will teach you how to use those things in His kingdom to do the work that He has given us to do. So therefore, you're going to be who you are.
00:19:06
Speaker
You're just going to be who God created you to be, and you will take joy in it. Instead of using it how you want to use it, how the world might encourage you to use it, we need to ask God how He wants us to be.
00:19:23
Speaker
who he created us to be. And we will have so much joy in doing the work that he gives us because he will simply be having us be the full extent of who he created us to be.
00:19:35
Speaker
So like, for instance, he gave me the name obedient witness, and we all have a name that God has given us. And if you've been around a while, it's it's been a while since I've spoken about it, but I have mentioned it a couple of times.
00:19:48
Speaker
And if you are new here, I want you to know that God has given you names that are beyond just Henry, George, Letty, Robin.
00:20:01
Speaker
they God has given you names. God gives people in the Bible names too. and We've read that many a time. When God gives us a name, we are to be that person.
00:20:14
Speaker
And that tells us who we are. So everything I do... I do it in that sense of who the name is that he gave me. So I am obedient to do what he calls me to do.
00:20:26
Speaker
And it's it's not a chore. It's something that is very pleasurable for me. I enjoy it. So when you are exactly who God created you to be, and you're doing the work, and you are ready for him to come back, you will have done nothing but loved your your life that he's given you here. And because you've been doing exactly what he wanted you to do.
00:20:54
Speaker
And eventually your work will be done and he will call you home. And he will say, well done, good and faithful servant. And that is the goal that we are aiming toward.
00:21:05
Speaker
Jesus hasn't told us that yet, but I'm giving us a little bit of a spoiler alert there. So I hope that you feel that you are encouraged to be ready and also convicted to know that it's your responsibility to be ready for him, to do what you need to do, but to know that you can do so with joy and pleasure and purpose.
00:21:26
Speaker
And that if you feel that God has lit that light and just bubbled you all up and made you excited, I hope that you are encouraged to share this with somebody so that they too so can know that.
00:21:37
Speaker
and in And seek who they are from God. Seek their identity in God so that you and they can be happy and joyful in whatever good works God has given you to do so that you are prepared for when he comes, if he comes in your lifetime or not.
00:21:55
Speaker
So I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day today, whatever day you get around to watching this August 29th reading.
