Today's reading will Matthew Chapter 16:5-28 ,and Mark Chapters 8:13 - 9:1, and Luke Chapter 9:18-27.

Today we will learn about giving up our own desires of doing whatever we want in favor of doing what God wants us to do with and that giving up our physical existence will save our eternal spiritual life. Jesus himself gave us this example by doing the will of our Father in Heaven and did not come to do whatever He wanted to do. As followers of Jesus this is our daily application for not just today but every day as we seek God's will for us in our daily life.

Jesus' Fulfillment of God's Will

00:00:41
Speaker
Today we are going to learn that we are expected to do like Jesus does. When Jesus came, he told us he did not come to do his own will, to do what he whatever he wanted to do.
00:00:55
Speaker
He came to do what God wanted him to do. And today he's going to teach us that the same is expected of us if we want to follow him. So let's get ready

Yeast as a Symbol of Sin

00:01:07
Speaker
to read.
00:01:07
Speaker
indeed
00:01:11
Speaker
Our first section is entitled Yeast. So I wanna give us a little bit of understanding here. If you've been around for a little bit, then you may be familiar with Passover. And at Passover time, we get rid of all of the yeast in our house because it symbolizes sin.
00:01:28
Speaker
Because yeast When it's mixed into the bread or the dough, it only needs a little bit and then it permeates. So we've seen both ah we've seen yeast compared to both sin and the kingdom of heaven.
00:01:43
Speaker
like As we go out into the world, we can also be like yeast. We are filling up the world, although they're started with just a few people being the disciples.
00:01:55
Speaker
And the kingdom of God is like yeast in the dough that a woman works through. And it permeates and it gets through into all of the bread so that all of it rises.
00:02:07
Speaker
When we have yeast, ah when we have bread rather without yeast, that is called unleavened bread. And that's when we have matzo. But when we have yeast, it symbolizes a little bit of something working into and infecting or permeating all of something.
00:02:25
Speaker
So we get rid of yeast in the bread because it gets rid of sin. It symbolizes that. Anyways, it's not a literal getting rid of sin.

Warnings Against Jewish Leaders' Teachings

00:02:35
Speaker
So today we're going to hear Jesus mourn about the yeast of the teachers of the law.
00:02:43
Speaker
So as we remember yesterday, the Jewish leaders had come to Jesus and said that they wanted him to show them a sign that he was who he says he was.
00:02:56
Speaker
And he told them that this generation would not receive a sign except for the sign of Jonah. So as the disciples and Jesus were leaving together, this is what occurred.
00:03:09
Speaker
So Jesus got into the boat and he sailed back to the other side of the lake. And Jesus's friends had only one loaf of bread and they had it in the boat. And Jesus said to them, be careful about the leader's yeast.
00:03:25
Speaker
Now his friends looked at each other. Is it because we're running out of bread? They whispered. Now Jesus knew what they were saying. Why are you talking about not having any bread? He asked them.
00:03:38
Speaker
Don't you understand? Don't, are your hearts hard? Don't your eyes see? Don't your ears hear? Don't you remember?
00:03:52
Speaker
gave five rolls to 5,000 people. How many baskets of leftovers did we have? 12, they answered him. I gave seven rolls to 4,000 people, said Jesus.
00:04:07
Speaker
And how many baskets of leftovers did we have? Seven, they rep replied. Don't you understand? asked Jesus. I wasn't talking to you about bread.
00:04:21
Speaker
Be careful about the leader's yeast. Then they understood. They saw that he wasn't talking about bread's yeast. He meant be careful about what the leaders teach.

Healing the Blind Man's Story

00:04:39
Speaker
simple lead man to it led Some people led a man to Jesus, and the man couldn't see. And the people asked Jesus to touch the man and help him see.
00:04:52
Speaker
So Jesus took the man's hand and he led the man to a place outside of the town. Then Jesus spit on the man's eyes. He put his hands on the man and asked him, can you see anything?
00:05:08
Speaker
The man looked. I see people, he said. They look like walking trees. Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes again.
00:05:19
Speaker
And then the man could see clearly.
00:05:25
Speaker
Jesus sent the man home and he told him, don't go into the town. Now Jesus traveled on with his friends and he asked him, who do people say that I am?

Peter's Declaration of Faith

00:05:38
Speaker
Oh, some people say that you are John who baptized, they said. And other people say that you are Elijah. And other people say that you're Jeremiah. And some people say that you are one of the other prophets.
00:05:53
Speaker
Who do you think I am? Asked Jesus. Peter said, you are the one God promised to send. You are the Christ. You are the son of the living God.
00:06:07
Speaker
Jesus said, God will be good to you, Peter. My father in heaven showed you who I am. You are Peter. You are like a rock. The power of hell will never get rid of my church, and I will build my church on this rock.
00:06:26
Speaker
I will give you the keys to God's kingdom, said Jesus. Lock up anything on earth, and it will be locked up in heaven. Open up anything on earth, it will be open in heaven too.
00:06:41
Speaker
Now don't tell anyone I am the one God promised to send. said Jesus.

Preparation for Jesus' Death and Resurrection

00:06:47
Speaker
Jesus now began to get his friends ready. He let them know what was going to happen. He told them that he had to go to Jerusalem and he said that the leaders and the teachers of God's laws would treat him badly.
00:07:03
Speaker
He said he would be killed, but that he would come alive again on the third day.
00:07:12
Speaker
Peter pulled Jesus to one side and said, Never, Lord. This will never happen to you. Get out of my way, Satan, said Jesus. This does not help me.
00:07:24
Speaker
You are not thinking of what God wants. You are thinking about what you want. Then Jesus called to everyone around him and said, Do you want to be with me?
00:07:38
Speaker
Then you will have to give up what you want. You will have to do what God chooses you to do. Do you just want to save your own life?
00:07:50
Speaker
Then you will end up losing it, said Jesus. Give up your life for me. Give up your life for God's kingdom.
00:08:01
Speaker
That is the way to save your life. What if you got all the riches in the world? What if you then lost your soul? asked Jesus.
00:08:12
Speaker
What good would your riches be? How could you give, what could you give to buy your soul back? Some people don't feel very good about me, said Jesus, and they don't feel good about my words.
00:08:26
Speaker
Our big Bible uses the word that they are ashamed of him. So i will be ashamed of them. I will not feel good about them when I come again.
00:08:37
Speaker
And that is when I will come with angels and with my father's power. Some people here will see God's kingdom, said Jesus, and they will see it before they die.
00:08:53
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:09:00
Speaker
We see it in today's reading that Peter was concerned. He didn't want Jesus to die. He wanted Jesus to stay with them. Oftentimes when we know someone is sick or we know someone is ready to die, we become very sad.
00:09:15
Speaker
We are sad because we will miss them. And everybody has to eventually transition to their eternal life. And so it is for our own selfish reasons that we are sad to see someone go.
00:09:30
Speaker
Whether it is with an illness or because they are simply old or whether something happened to them to cause them to die what we would consider early in their life. God is in control of everything.
00:09:43
Speaker
And even here, God would be in control of when Jesus died. And when Peter was upset that Jesus was telling them ahead of time that he would have to die and rise again on the third day, Jesus explained that they needed to think not about what they wanted, but about what God wanted.
00:10:06
Speaker
want to remind us, too, that you remember how prophecy worked and why God gave us prophecy? God told us that he was telling us ahead of time what he was going to do so that when it happened, we would know that things happened because he had said they would, not because of any other reason.
00:10:25
Speaker
And here Jesus is preparing the disciples. He is giving them inside information. He is letting them know ahead of time.

Taking Up One's Cross Daily

00:10:34
Speaker
And instead of accepting this prophecy, they were puzzled by it. they weren They didn't like the way it sounded. What do you mean you're going to die?
00:10:45
Speaker
the They couldn't get past the death part. Even though they had also raised people from the dead, they were not getting it. Their eyes were closed.
00:10:57
Speaker
Their ears were closed. they were They were seeing without understanding. Jesus was already telling them that he would come back. Yes, he would need to die, but not to worry because he would come back.
00:11:13
Speaker
This should have been something that they were looking forward to knowing that he was not only going to be dead, but that he would come back. And with the sign of Jonah, that he would be in the earth for three days.
00:11:26
Speaker
Jesus didn't even tell them, someday I will return. Like now we know that Jesus will return someday. And we don't know when that will occur. Only God knows when that will occur.
00:11:38
Speaker
But here and throughout the time before it happened, Jesus told them how long they would have to wait. It would only be three days.
00:11:50
Speaker
That is amazing. He would be dead for three days and then he would come back to them. So Jesus told them all.

Spiritual Treasure and Good Deeds

00:12:00
Speaker
In our big Bible, it says everybody must take up their cross.
00:12:04
Speaker
daily Now, Jesus was telling them that he too would be buried ah would be crucified on a cross and that we would have to take up our own death daily.
00:12:16
Speaker
So what does it mean to die to our ourselves? I love Karen Henley's version of the Bible. It really explains what Jesus means without detracting from his words.
00:12:28
Speaker
We need to be focused on what God wants us to do. We've talked a lot this year about the fact that God has purpose for us. We are meant to be useful. We are meant to to be exactly who God created us to be and to do the good works that he has set ahead of time for us to do.
00:12:47
Speaker
every day has tasks for us to do. and we need to focus on his kingdom, seeking God's kingdom first. What does Jesus mean when he says that to save our life, we will lose it?
00:13:02
Speaker
Jesus taught us recently that it is not the body that gives eternal life. It is the spirit. And Jesus is food for our spirit.
00:13:13
Speaker
So God is spirit and he must be worshipped in spirit and in truth. So it is our spirit that God gives us life through.
00:13:23
Speaker
The body will die eventually. But if we are focused on our physical body, we will lose our spiritual eternal life. Jesus tells us here that if we have all the riches in the world for our physical body, for the time that we have it,
00:13:42
Speaker
What good will that do for our spiritual soul? Won't do us any good. We can't buy our salvation. Only Jesus bought our salvation. And the only way that we can get it is to believe in him, to believe in the one who sent him and to obey.
00:14:01
Speaker
So we need to be sure that we are acknowledging Jesus, that we are not ashamed of him, that we are not
00:14:12
Speaker
disappointed or feeling badly about the things that he says. We need to be sure that we are doing God's work for us. That way, we are building up our treasures in heaven.
00:14:24
Speaker
Our treasures on earth will eventually be gone. Even if we amassed thousands and millions of dollars before we died and they just sat there, what can we do with it when we die? it will simply be passed on.
00:14:39
Speaker
and it will be spent and it will be used and eventually things wear out. And eventually everybody's possessions that are handed down, eventually somebody throws them all away.
00:14:54
Speaker
It doesn't matter how old they are. Eventually, some everything we leave behind is gone. But everything that we build up in heaven never goes away.
00:15:07
Speaker
And Jesus tells us that when we do good things, we are building up our treasure in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy. So there is more to our eternal existence than just our eternal life.
00:15:21
Speaker
God, Jesus tells us that we are building up treasure up there. i don't know what kind of treasures they are, but they will be wonderful because they are treasure. And when we get up there,
00:15:33
Speaker
and our to our eternal life, we will be glad that we built up those treasures up there in heaven. We do are building up by by doing things like giving food and water to other people by being kind to others.
00:15:48
Speaker
Jesus says that what we do in secret, our heavenly Father sees. and that we are not to do things and brag about them, because then we will have received our reward.
00:16:00
Speaker
But instead, our left hand is not to know what our right hand is doing. Surely, sometimes people will know what we have done, and then they will see our good deeds and praise our Father in heaven. But that's okay if people see them.
00:16:14
Speaker
It's with our intention. Are we wanting to broadcast them and say, look what I'm doing, look what I'm doing. Cheer for me. Yay. Or are we looking to draw attention to God, to give the glory to God?
00:16:29
Speaker
That is the difference in that. So let us be sure that we are following Jesus and that we are not ashamed to do and follow him, to do as he does.
00:16:41
Speaker
And the biggest example he gave us is that he came not to do his own desire, his own will, but the will of his father in heaven. Let us also choose to ask and follow whatever God's will is for us every single day.
00:16:59
Speaker
That is our big daily application today. So thank you for joining me today. i hope you feel that God has lit your light and that you are just bubbling over with excitement to do whatever God has in mind for you to do today.
00:17:14
Speaker
And I hope that whatever it is you do today, you have a great day doing it. Please consider clicking your light button so that we can share with others that they also need to be sure that they are doing what God's will is in their life so that they can build up treasure in heaven and preserve their eternal life that way, rather than trying to do what they want with their life.
00:17:37
Speaker
When we do that, we are spreading the word about reading God's word because we're not making this up. This is not my message for you. This is not your message for people. You are spreading Jesus's message.
00:17:49
Speaker
We are doing so by spreading God's word. God's word is useful for teaching and correction and for reconciliation. And it enables us. It makes us capable and ready to do every good work that God sends our way.
00:18:05
Speaker
That is what we are doing when we click that light button and share and spread the word about reading God's word.

Final Encouragement and Invitation

00:18:12
Speaker
So thank you for doing that and ah setting your light up on a hill so everybody can see your light and not putting it under a basket.
00:18:20
Speaker
I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day. And guess what? i will be here for you again tomorrow for our next daily reading of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:18:32
Speaker
See you then.
