Monthly memberships to support this event can be purchased on my site, here: https://www.inthefamilywaycoaching.com/offering_packages

Today's reading will include the Books of John Chapter 10:1-21, Luke Chapters 17:11-19, 10:1-11, 16-21, and Matthew Chapter 11:25.

Today we will read and discuss Jesus telling us that He is the Good Shepherd who willingly chose to lay down His life for His sheep so that He would save His sheep. We will learn and discuss that Jesus is like the gate of the sheep pen and that all who enter through Him will be saved. As His sheep our responsibility is to follow Him! As Jesus' sheep we will learn that we are all part of ONE group of sheep- Jewish people and Gentiles are ONE flock of sheep, TOGETHER with ONE shepherd, Jesus!

We will also read and discuss when Jesus sent out 72 people and explained to them that their work was to heal the sick and tell people that God's Kingdom is near. That same work applies today, despite it being more than 2,025 years later! We will be reminded and encouraged not to take peoples' belief OR refusal to believe the good news about Jesus and God's Kingdom personally. Jesus explained to us today that anyone who listens to us is really listening to HIM and anyone who does NOT listen to us is really not listening to Jesus OR listening to God, who sent Jesus!

The Good Shepherd and His Parables

00:00:52
Speaker
Today we are going to be reading about Jesus telling us about how he is our Good Shepherd. This comparison to being a good shepherd started way back with King David.
00:01:06
Speaker
King David, prior to being King David, grew up being a shepherd. God wanted king a king who would shepherd or look after people.
00:01:20
Speaker
And so Jesus is the one who looks after God's people. And he's not just any shepherd. He is a good shepherd. He really looks after us.
00:01:33
Speaker
And not only that, but he laid down his life for his sheep. And today we are going to be hearing him tell us about that.
00:01:45
Speaker
So let's go ahead and open up our Bible and let's get started on our reading for today.
00:01:55
Speaker
Jesus says, One man goes into the sheep pen and he goes in by the gate, said Jesus. He is the shepherd.
00:02:07
Speaker
The guard will open the gate for the shepherd. Another man climbs in another way. He is a robber. Now the sheep listen for the shepherd's voice, says Jesus. And he calls his sheep by their names.
00:02:27
Speaker
He leads them out and all of them come out. Then he walks on in front of them. The sheep follow the shepherd, said Jesus.
00:02:42
Speaker
They know his voice. They will never follow a stranger. And in fact, they will run from a stranger. They don't know the stranger's voice.
00:02:55
Speaker
Jesus told this story, but people didn't understand what he was talking about. So Jesus said, am like a gate for the sheep.
00:03:08
Speaker
And people are like the sheep. Anyone who goes in through me will be saved. He can come in and go out and he will find green fields.
00:03:24
Speaker
The robber comes up only to steal, said Jesus, and he comes to kill. He comes to tear things apart. I came so that my sheep can have a full life.
00:03:40
Speaker
Our big Bible uses the word abundant life so that we may have an abundant life, a full life. I am the good shepherd, said Jesus, and the good shepherd will die to save his sheep.
00:03:58
Speaker
Some people are paid to watch the sheep, said Jesus, and they are not like the shepherd who owns the sheep. What if the paid person sees a wolf?
00:04:12
Speaker
Then he runs away, said Jesus. He leaves the sheep with the wolf and the wolf jumps at the sheep. The sheep run this way and that way and the man runs too.
00:04:25
Speaker
He is only being paid to watch the sheep. He doesn't really care about them. But I am the good shepherd, said Jesus.
00:04:37
Speaker
I know my people. They are my sheep. My sheep know me, just like the Father knows me.
00:04:49
Speaker
And I know the Father. And I will even die to save my sheep. I have other sheep, said Jesus, and they are not in this sheep pen.
00:05:04
Speaker
I will bring them too, and they will listen to my voice. Then there will be one group of sheep. There will be one shepherd.
00:05:16
Speaker
My father loves me because I give up my life. Nobody is going to take my life from me. I choose to give it up, said Jesus.
00:05:30
Speaker
Now the leaders who heard Jesus couldn't agree. Some said, bad spirit controls him. is mad. Why do we listen to him? and Others said, listen, he wouldn't talk this way if a bad spirit controlled him.
00:05:47
Speaker
man couldn't see ah before and now he can see. Can a bad spirit make a man see?

Healing and Gratitude

00:05:56
Speaker
Jesus headed toward Jerusalem, and as he came near a town, he saw 10 men. These men had a very bad skin sickness. So they stood a little way off, and they called out loudly to him, Jesus, master, feel sorry for us.
00:06:18
Speaker
Jesus called back to them, go to the priests and let them look at your skin.
00:06:27
Speaker
So the men started out to see the priests and while they were walking, they looked at their skin and their skin was well. One of the men ran back to Jesus.
00:06:40
Speaker
He cheered loudly for God. He bowed down at Jesus' feet and he thanked Jesus. He wasn't even Jewish.
00:06:52
Speaker
He was a Samaritan. Weren't there ten men who got well? asked Jesus. Where are the other nine men? Are you the only one who came back to praise God? Then Jesus told the man, You can get up and go.
00:07:13
Speaker
You are well because you believed in me.

Mission of the 72 Disciples

00:07:22
Speaker
Seventy-two men. Now Jesus chose 72 helpers and he put them into pairs. He sent them ahead of him two by two and they went to every town where Jesus was going.
00:07:37
Speaker
Before they went, Jesus spoke to them. People are ready to come into God's kingdom, he said, and it's like the time when farmers bring crops in.
00:07:48
Speaker
But there are not many workers, so ask God to send workers into the field.
00:07:57
Speaker
You are like lambs going into a world of wolves, Jesus told them. Do not take a bag or shoes with you, and do not stop to talk with people on the road.
00:08:08
Speaker
Don't move from house to house, said Jesus. Stay one house and eat whatever the people feed you. Now you go into town where you said Jesus.
00:08:22
Speaker
for your work that you do your work is to make sick people well and tell people that god's kingdom is near
00:08:36
Speaker
into a town where you are not welcome said jesus Then you are to stand in the street and say, We wipe the dust of this town off of our feet.
00:08:48
Speaker
But you can be sure that God's kingdom is near.
00:08:55
Speaker
Now anyone who listens to you is listening to me, said Jesus. And anyone who won't listen to you is really not listening to me.
00:09:07
Speaker
and And he is not listening to God who sent me. Now, sometime later, the 72 helpers came back to Jesus and they were full of joy. They said, Lord, even the bad spirits left in your name.
00:09:29
Speaker
Jesus said, I saw Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. I have given you power to walk over snakes and spiders that can kill you.
00:09:42
Speaker
And I have given you power greater than the power of Satan, the enemy. Nothing will hurt you. But do not be glad just because the spirits follow your orders.
00:09:58
Speaker
Be glad because your names are written in heaven, said Jesus.

Invitation to Rest and Salvation

00:10:06
Speaker
Then Jesus was full of joy in the Holy Spirit and he said, I praise you, Father.
00:10:14
Speaker
you are the Lord of heaven and and earth. You hid your truth from people who thought they were wise and you showed this to people who are like infants in the world.
00:10:29
Speaker
Yes, Father, this is what you enjoy. Then Jesus said, Come to me if you are tired.
00:10:40
Speaker
Come to me when you have too much to do. I will give you rest. Learn by watching and listening to me.
00:10:51
Speaker
i am thoughtful and kind. My heart is not proud. You will find that your soul can rest with me. And I will be easy on you.
00:11:07
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:11:13
Speaker
Wasn't that beautiful? Wasn't that wonderful? Oh my gosh. I love that.
00:11:20
Speaker
ah Jesus is teaching is so wonderful. i love sitting at his feet and reading what he is teaching us. Don't you?
00:11:32
Speaker
Let's go back to the beginning and start there. We have a lot to learn today, don't we? There was so much good stuff in there today. um I'm so excited.
00:11:44
Speaker
ah Jesus told us today that he is like a gate. Jesus is the way and the truth and the life. He is showing us the way to eternal life.
00:11:59
Speaker
He is like the gate. the way in to God's kingdom.
00:12:06
Speaker
And we are like the sheep who go in and out of that gate.
00:12:13
Speaker
Anyone who goes in through Jesus will be saved. He is the one who saves us. And he doesn't just save us. He cares for us.
00:12:25
Speaker
He looks after us, he says. he says that he is the good shepherd and he will die to save his his sheep. That is exactly what he did for us.
00:12:37
Speaker
And when he told us this, he told us that nobody took his life away from him. He willingly chose to lay it down. And our big Bible tells us that he has the authority to lay it down and to pick it back up again.
00:12:54
Speaker
He did not simply die and that was the end of him. Jesus came back. He overcame death. He rose again and he is the first fruits of those who are risen from the dead.
00:13:09
Speaker
We too will eventually rise from the dead and we will have eternal life in Jesus, in God's kingdom. Isn't that great news?
00:13:21
Speaker
That is so exciting. oh that is so exciting. What else is exciting about today's reading is that Jesus says that he knows us by name.
00:13:35
Speaker
Jesus calls us by name. And if we are part of who Jesus is meant to call, then we will hear his voice and know his voice.
00:13:48
Speaker
In a couple of days, we are going to read where the Pharisees are speaking to Jesus. And Jesus says that they are not his sheep, and that's why they don't hear his voice calling them.
00:14:01
Speaker
And that is what Jesus is talking about today when he was so full of joy and he prayed to God and said that he had chosen to reveal these things to those who were not educated.
00:14:16
Speaker
not to those who thought they were wise and could discern. Because although Jesus was showing them and telling them who he was, were they believing him?
00:14:27
Speaker
No. And we talked about that yesterday. And we also mentioned yesterday what Jesus talks about today, where he says that when people do not believe the message that we are giving,
00:14:43
Speaker
It is not us that they are choosing not to believe and hear. It is Jesus that they are choosing not to believe and hear. And it is also God who sent Jesus that people are choosing not to listen to.
00:14:59
Speaker
So we don't need to take it personally when people do not respond and are not interested and don't choose to claim their salvation in Jesus.
00:15:11
Speaker
They are not one of his sheep. But you know what Jesus tells us here? This is where Jesus is talking about the fact that he is talking to the Jewish people here.
00:15:22
Speaker
But these other sheep that are not part of this pen, those are the Gentiles. People like you and me who are not Jewish. We are the ones who have become part of the same pen.
00:15:37
Speaker
We are now part of the same group of sheep as the Jewish people. We are all meant to be one family. And he says that there will be one shepherd.
00:15:50
Speaker
He will look after all of us. That is wonderful. That is such good news. God didn't come only now for the Jewish people.
00:16:01
Speaker
He had his special people and people had to become Jewish. But now anybody who believes in Jesus as their savior and becomes a Gentile believer in the Messiah becomes part of Jesus's family of sheep.
00:16:20
Speaker
We are all part of the same group of sheep. He says that we will know his voice too. And that means that he calls us by name. God has names for us that are not the names that our mom and dad gave us.
00:16:39
Speaker
Ask God for the name that he gives you. It is just for you. so we can have other names. You know, we can share names ah where but my name is obedient witness and others of you might also be a witness or obedient, but God will give you your name and it will be for you how he calls you.

Urgency of Spreading God's Message

00:17:05
Speaker
that's special. And we hear his voice. Oh, I love that.
00:17:14
Speaker
Let's look at the other ones here. We read today that people are ready to come into God's kingdom. And it's the time, it's like the time when farmers bring the crops in.
00:17:28
Speaker
And Jesus says that there are not many workers. So we are to ask God to send workers into the field. We can also still pray for this today.
00:17:40
Speaker
we can We say that the harvest is ripe. People want to come. They are looking. And like sheep who are lost, they need to find their shepherd. God is calling them by name.
00:17:54
Speaker
So let's do our part and tell people about God's kingdom. Jesus told 72 people that their work was to make sick people well and tell people that God's kingdom is near.
00:18:10
Speaker
Now, one of the things that we read about in the old covenant was that God kept telling people that the time was coming, the time was near, and the people didn't want to believe that it was near. They were just tired of hearing that it was near. It was near.
00:18:26
Speaker
And here we have, it's been over 2000 years. As of today, we are in 2025. So it's been 2025 years. And Jesus said that the kingdom of God was near even back then.
00:18:41
Speaker
So we should not become what we call complacent, where we think that the time for Jesus coming back is so far away that it is not to be relevant for today.
00:18:53
Speaker
God said even then through Jesus that his kingdom was near. And so we are still to continue giving this message that God's kingdom is near, and we don't know the time when Jesus will come back.
00:19:11
Speaker
However, We are to be doing the work that he gives us until that time. And Jesus told us that it is good to be found doing our work when he returns.
00:19:23
Speaker
So we don't want to be complacent where we think, oh, he's not going to be here for a while. Jesus told us a story about that, about the servants who say, oh, my master is a long time coming and I i won't be ready for him when he comes. He's taking a very long time.
00:19:42
Speaker
God does not take a long time according to his own time. It just seems that way by our time. And he may not come during our lifetime. But that doesn't mean that the work he gives us is not important.
00:19:56
Speaker
And we are not to help bring in the people who are ready to know about his kingdom. We have our work to do, and our work is to heal people, he says, and to tell people that God's kingdom is near.

Teachings on Love and Simplicity

00:20:14
Speaker
And the other day we read that we are to make disciples, students of Jesus among all people.
00:20:22
Speaker
We talked about that. i don't think we read it. We talked about it. And that the work, our ah part of our work also is to believe in him and in the one who sent him.
00:20:35
Speaker
So we have a number of jobs to do. But Jesus assures us today that the work that we are doing is not difficult.
00:20:48
Speaker
He says, to come to him if we are tired. We learned previously that the Pharisees were making so many rules that it was like they had taken away the key from the people, from being able to learn and to come to God.
00:21:08
Speaker
Jesus doesn't have ah many particular rules about washing the hands and things like that. What he has rules about is that what God has always taught us to do, that is to love one another.
00:21:24
Speaker
So what Jesus is saying here is that, come to me when you have too much to do, and I will give you rest. Learn by watching and listening to me.
00:21:36
Speaker
I am thoughtful and kind. My heart is not proud. And you will find that your soul can rest with me. Jesus doesn't have a bunch of ritualistic things that we need to abide by, where you have to constantly be worried about following a bunch of rules.
00:21:57
Speaker
God's rules are very simple. they We are to be loving and kind to one another. Jesus will tell us later, and I believe he already did, that if we are his disciples truly, then we will love him and to love each other.
00:22:15
Speaker
And then we are truly his disciples if we listen to him. So we need to be sure that we are listening to him and not worrying about so many particular rules about whatever, like church rules, like what we talked about, where we have to worry about being a member or not being a member of a church.
00:22:38
Speaker
God is not calling us to specifically sign up to be a member of a church. Jesus calls us to believe in him and to believe in the one who sent him. and to follow what God wants us to do.
00:22:51
Speaker
And that's what he's talking about. Are there still kind of a lot of do's and don'ts? A little bit. When we look at all of the mean things that we shouldn't be doing, we could list all the mean things we shouldn't be doing, and we could come up with a million of them.
00:23:05
Speaker
And that's why it's easier to say, to treat one another well, the way we would want to be treated. It's easier to look at it that way. Love one another.
00:23:17
Speaker
Love God. Love Jesus. ah It's so much easier when we think about it like that. To be kind to one another. So if anything you're doing is unkind, then it's not something we should be doing.
00:23:32
Speaker
Simple as that.
00:23:35
Speaker
So that's what Jesus is talking about, is that it's relief from all the pharisaical rules. it's It's not a release from all rules. is He's talking about the Pharisees' rules.
00:23:46
Speaker
And unfortunately, they had made so many rules that, like Jesus was saying, is that they were paying more attention to their own rules, and they were causing ah God's rules to be made not important.
00:24:01
Speaker
God's rules are the ones that are important, not people made rules. So we want to be sure we understand that Jesus is not saying that there are no rules. He is just saying that we are to follow God's rules and not just man-made rules.
00:24:17
Speaker
We have man-made rules that are made for our safety, like laws and like that against like traffic and things like that. But we're talking about spiritual rules for rules of what it takes to be a believer.
00:24:30
Speaker
And for Jesus, our rules are that we need to know him and to not be ashamed of him so that when the time comes, he will not be ashamed of us.
00:24:41
Speaker
So it's things like that. I just want to make sure that we understand that we're not saying that there are no rules whatsoever. but that there are less rules than what the people had been given because it was very difficult for them to come to God with all of the pharisaical rules that they were making, like the hand-washing rules and such like that, where Jesus explained that it was not what went into a person that made them unclean. It was what comes out because our heart is what God is concerned about, not whether or not we wash our hands in a special way.
00:25:15
Speaker
That's the kind of things we're talking about here today. So I hope that that was clear. i hope that that gives us thoughtful understanding of what are we read today.
00:25:27
Speaker
and so what exactly is our daily application today?

Conclusion and Engagement Call

00:25:31
Speaker
Our daily application is to know that Jesus is our good shepherd and that he calls us by name and that our good work is to follow him to tell people about God's kingdom being near.
00:25:51
Speaker
We need to be sure that we are following Jesus. Jesus told us here that, let's see, where where is that written in here? He says, the shepherd walks ahead of the sheep and they follow him.
00:26:11
Speaker
So we need to be sure that we are following our good shepherd. That is our big daily application today, to remember that Jesus is our good shepherd.
00:26:22
Speaker
He cares for us, and we are to follow him and to tell other people about him, that he is the way into God's kingdom, and that God's kingdom is near.
00:26:36
Speaker
So I hope that you found today's reading as exciting as I did and that you feel that God has lit your light today, whatever day you get around to listening or watching this September 13th daily reading out of our Day by Day Kids Bible.
00:26:52
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me.
00:26:57
Speaker
If you feel that God has lit your light, I would like to encourage you to click that light button, that one that looks like a thumbs up or a heart. Thank you for clicking the follow and subscribe. I see that we are growing.
00:27:10
Speaker
We are spreading the word about reading God's word. God's word is truth. It is useful for teaching and correction. It is useful for enabling us to be prepared for every good work that that God is sending our way to do.
00:27:28
Speaker
So thank you so much for being with me as we go through the Bible this year and learning about God's big picture. And I will be here again for tomorrow's daily reading.
00:27:40
Speaker
And until then, i hope you have a very joyful day.
