In today's reading we will cover Matthew Chapters 4:23-25 and 9:1-15, Mark Chapter 2:1-45, and Luke Chapters 4:31-44, and 5:12-26. Today we will read about the great compassion that Jesus had for the people who came to him seeking healing from illness, disease, and demon possession. In today's reading Jesus' showed His compassion was not just for strangers, but for those people closest to his disciples. Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law from her high fever as she lay bedridden. He took her by the hand, helped her up out of bed, and she was immediately healed. Later, a man with a skin disease approached Jesus and said that if Jesus was willing, He could heal the man. Jesus showed incredible compassion by both responding, "I am willing" and then reaching out his hand to touch the affected man. In this instance Jesus warned the man not to say how he had been healed but instead to go offer the gift that Moses described should be offered to God as a result of the healing. But the man, instead, began to proclaim and spread the word about what Jesus had done for him SO MUCH, that Jesus was no longer able to enter a town openly, but had to stay out in wilderness areas! Another man received so much compassion from Jesus that his sins were forgiven! Jesus tells us that He did so in order to show that He had the authority to do it, rather just telling the man to pick up his mat and walk home, which Jesus also did.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about being compassionate on people as Jesus is compassionate on us, as well as the importance of being witnesses to the things Jesus does for us and sharing with others our experiences with Jesus'  compassion on us. Jesus saved us from our sins by accepting the punishment for us. He gave us eternal life for believing in Him and sent God's Holy Spirit to live within us! The changes that we experienced as a result of this process are worth sharing and telling others about! We ALL have amazing stories to share, so let's SHARE THEM the way this man did and encourage others to come to a saving faith in Jesus as THEIR savior so that they, too, can experience amazing things with Jesus!

Introduction to the Daily Reading Session

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome back, everybody. Today is August 20th. Thank you for joining me as we continue on with our daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible, written by Karen Henley.
00:00:15
Speaker
I am so glad that you are here, whether you are watching or listening. Thank you for joining me as we read through the whole Bible this year. If you are just finding this event, I don't want you to be discouraged that this is a kid's Bible.
00:00:28
Speaker
This is a great version of the Bible, and it gives us a great view of the big picture of God's love for us, all the way from Genesis to Revelation, in chronological order.

Benefits of a Chronological Bible

00:00:40
Speaker
Why is this helpful? Because there multiple accounts of the same events throughout the Bible. Some things, for instance, are recorded both in the King's books as well as the Chronicles books and also in the Gospels as we are reading in the New Covenant.
00:00:58
Speaker
These events that we're going to even read today were told in varying levels of um detail by different people. So our version takes all of the accounts and puts them into one complete picture for us.
00:01:15
Speaker
I love that.

Tracking Progress with a Commitment Calendar

00:01:18
Speaker
So if you are following along on your commitment calendar, it's time to take that out and get your sticker ready or however you're marking off your days because you are about to hear the Bible today.
00:01:31
Speaker
I wanted to share with you another reason as to why you may be interested in trying to utilize the daily commitment calendar. It can act like a bookmark so that you know the last day that you listened to.
00:01:45
Speaker
You may not have time for a couple of days and you may lose track of where you were. So it acts like a bookmark. It reminds you of the last place where you listened. Then you can come back to it and pick up the story right where you left off.

Jesus's Compassion and Healings Begin

00:02:02
Speaker
Well, today we are going to be reading about compassion. Jesus is going to show a lot of kindness and compassion on people who are sick.
00:02:15
Speaker
Today's first section is entitled Many Sick People. And then our second section is entitled to People from Everywhere. And then our final section is entitled A Hole in the Roof.
00:02:33
Speaker
Jesus and his friends went back to Capernaum. The worship day came and Jesus went to the town's worship house. He started teaching there. People were surprised.
00:02:46
Speaker
Jesus didn't sound like any other teacher of the law. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about.
00:02:55
Speaker
All of a sudden, a man in the town's worship house yelled, Jesus of Nazareth, I know who you are. You are God's holy one.
00:03:07
Speaker
What do you want here? Did you come to get rid of us?
00:03:12
Speaker
A bad spirit was in control of the man. So Jesus said firmly, Hush, come out of that man.
00:03:21
Speaker
The bad spirit made the man shake. And then the spirit came out with a loud yell. The people were surprised. What's happening here? They asked each other.
00:03:33
Speaker
This is a new teaching. Jesus talks like a man in charge. He even tells bad spirits what to do. And they obey.
00:03:45
Speaker
The news about Jesus soon went all over the place. People everywhere around Galilee heard about this. and Jesus and his friends left the town's worship house.
00:03:56
Speaker
They went to Peter and Andrew's house. James and John were with them. Peter's wife's mother was at the house and she was in bed. She was very hot, very sick.
00:04:09
Speaker
Peter told Jesus about her.
00:04:13
Speaker
Jesus went into the room where she was. He held up her hand. Then he helped her get up. Right away, she was well.
00:04:26
Speaker
She started taking care of her visitors.
00:04:30
Speaker
After the sunset, many people came by the house and they brought sick people to Jesus. They brought people who were controlled by bad spirits. The whole town seemed to be coming to Peter's door.
00:04:44
Speaker
People were sick in different ways, but Jesus made them well. He sent many bad spirits away from people and he would not let the spirits talk.
00:04:56
Speaker
And that's because they knew who he was.
00:05:01
Speaker
Jesus got up very early the next morning and he went to find a place to be alone. He wanted a place where he could pray.
00:05:10
Speaker
Later, Peter and his friends went looking for Jesus and they found him at last. They said, everybody is looking for you. Let's go. Jesus said, let's go to other towns near here.

Miracles and Teachings Across Galilee

00:05:24
Speaker
I can teach in other towns too. That is why I came.
00:05:30
Speaker
So Jesus traveled all through the land of Galilee. He spoke at the town's worship houses. He told the good news about God's kingdom and he made people well.
00:05:42
Speaker
Even people to the north in Syria heard about Jesus.
00:05:49
Speaker
People kept bringing sick friends and family to Jesus. Some people were hurting very badly. Some had bad spirits in control of them.
00:06:02
Speaker
Some people couldn't move. Jesus made them well. Big crowds of people came to see Jesus. They came from Galilee and the 10 cities.
00:06:16
Speaker
They came from Jerusalem and from around the Jordan River. and many of them followed Jesus.
00:06:24
Speaker
One day, ah man with a skin sickness came to Jesus. You can make me well if you want to, he said.
00:06:35
Speaker
Jesus felt kind and caring toward this man. So Jesus touched him. I am willing, he said.
00:06:47
Speaker
Be well. And right away the sickness went away. The man was well. Then Jesus said, don't tell anyone about this. Go to the priest and let him check your skin and give the gifts you were supposed to give for getting well.
00:07:06
Speaker
But the man went off and told about what happened, and the news went all over the place. So Jesus couldn't go into the towns for a while. But people still came to see Jesus from everywhere.
00:07:19
Speaker
They came to be made well.
00:07:24
Speaker
Now Jesus went back to Capernaum, and news went around that he was home. So crowds started coming to the house where he was staying. So many people came that the house was full of people. And there was no more room.
00:07:40
Speaker
There wasn't even room outside around the door outside. But Jesus taught the people right there.
00:07:50
Speaker
Then four men walked up to the house. And they were bringing a friend who could not move. They carried him on a mat. But they couldn't get through the crowds.
00:08:02
Speaker
So they dug through the roof. They made a hole right above Jesus. And then they let the sick man down on his mat. He went right through the hole in the roof.
00:08:16
Speaker
Jesus saw how much they believed. So he told the sick man, your sins are forgiven.
00:08:28
Speaker
Some teachers of the law, ah some teachers of God's law were there watching. And they thought, how can he say that? Only God can forgive sins.
00:08:41
Speaker
Now Jesus knew just what they were thinking. And he said, why are you thinking that? Is it easier to say your sins are forgiven or to say, get up, take your mat and walk?
00:08:55
Speaker
I have the right to forgive sins here on earth. You will see. Then Jesus looked again at the man who couldn't move. And he said, get up, take your mat with you.
00:09:09
Speaker
You can go home now.
00:09:12
Speaker
The man stood up. He picked up his mat. Then he walked out with everyone watching him. Everyone was very surprised and they praised God.
00:09:26
Speaker
They said, we never saw anything like this before.
00:09:35
Speaker
and that's the end of our reading for today.
00:09:41
Speaker
I love the compassion that Jesus had in today's reading.
00:09:49
Speaker
I'm going to open up our big Bible too. And we're going to read that account of the man who had the skin sickness because I love the detail that it gives us in there.
00:10:01
Speaker
And then we'll talk about that.
00:10:05
Speaker
This comes from the book of Mark chapter one, verses 40 through 45. realll forty five
00:10:13
Speaker
A man with the skin sickness, leprosy, comes to him, begging him and falling on his knees, saying, If you are willing, you can make me clean.
00:10:26
Speaker
Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. He said, I am willing. Be cleansed. Immediately, the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.
00:10:44
Speaker
Jesus sent him away at once, sternly warning him. He said to him, See that you say nothing to anyone, but go show yourself to the priests, and then for your cleansing, offer what Moses commanded as a testimony to them.
00:10:59
Speaker
But he went out and began to proclaim and spread the word so much that Jesus could no longer enter a town quite openly, but had to stay out in the wilderness area.
00:11:11
Speaker
and still they kept on coming to him from everywhere.
00:11:19
Speaker
There are a couple of things that I want to point out. First of all, when somebody had leprosy, the skin sickness, They were not allowed to come within a certain area. They weren't allowed to come close to people.
00:11:35
Speaker
They had to stay away, like a restraining order, in order for quarantine so that they didn't spread it. Nobody wanted to get it because then they weren't even allowed to go into the service at the synagogue.
00:11:47
Speaker
They weren't allowed to do things with other people. They had to be kept separate. So first of all, this man came within close proximity to Jesus. And he fell down and he begged Jesus and he said, if you are willing, you can cleanse me.
00:12:06
Speaker
Jesus not only was willing, but it says that he had compassion on this man and he stretched out his hand and he touched the man.
00:12:18
Speaker
That was unheard of. You didn't get near people with leprosy, much less to go and touch them. But Jesus, knowing that this man had not been touched in who knows how long, went and touched him.
00:12:33
Speaker
That's a deep compassion. Jesus could have healed him with just a word. Did you see the way he healed the man who was lowered down on his mat by his friends through the roof?
00:12:46
Speaker
All he did was tell the man, your sins are forgiven. Get up, pick up your mat and go. You can go home now. But still, Jesus was compassionate and he touched the man.
00:13:01
Speaker
He didn't just touch the man physically. He touched that man's heart. That man could not keep silent. He went and told everybody so much.
00:13:14
Speaker
He went out proclaiming this good news of what Jesus had done for him. That now Jesus couldn't even enter the towns openly, but he had to stay out in the wilderness area.
00:13:26
Speaker
That man was so thankful and so excited about what Jesus did for him. He could not keep quiet. He had to tell about it.
00:13:40
Speaker
When Jesus does things for us, are we excited about it and can't keep quiet about it and tell people about what he has done for us?

The Power of Sharing Personal Testimonies

00:13:50
Speaker
What do we call that again?
00:13:53
Speaker
Being a witness. When we are a witness, it means to experience things with God and to tell people about it. This man was a witness for Jesus.
00:14:06
Speaker
He wanted everybody to know what Jesus had done for him. Can you imagine if we had the same passion that this man had to share what Jesus has done for us?
00:14:19
Speaker
How much of an impact that would have?
00:14:23
Speaker
That would be so wonderful. We want people to know what Jesus has done for us. He has not only saved us, but how has that changed your old life personally? That is what our testimony is.
00:14:37
Speaker
That is our witnessing. to tell the amazing stories about what Jesus has done for us, and with the same passion and excitement, with the same impact that this man had.
00:14:51
Speaker
Go out and proclaim it everywhere.
00:14:55
Speaker
So we have a couple of different daily applications. One is that to be compassionate on people, the way Jesus was compassionate about people.
00:15:06
Speaker
He wanted to heal them. He wanted to make them well. Knowing Jesus brings us shalom, which we now know means wholeness. To be made whole, we can bring healing to people by telling about Jesus so that they accept him as their savior and receive the Holy Spirit and become one with him so that Jesus can be one with them and they will experience shalom.
00:15:38
Speaker
wholeness, wellness, the peace that goes beyond any understanding.
00:15:47
Speaker
That is such a beautiful thing to share. I hope that you feel that this is inspiring to you, that you feel like, yes, I want to do that because that's what part of this event is about, is that we want to share.
00:16:04
Speaker
want to be witnesses. We want to make God the most important one. We want to make Jesus the most important one in our lives. And we want to share what people with people what he has done for us so that other people can also receive the wonderful gift that we have received.
00:16:24
Speaker
It's a gift that's worth regifting, don't you think?
00:16:29
Speaker
We often think of regifting as being of giving things we don't want that we can't use. But sharing our testimony is a great way to regift what we have been given.
00:16:40
Speaker
We can share it. And we can do that by being a light, a light in the world and spread the light to Jesus. Everything we do, we should be pointing people to Jesus.
00:16:53
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today on this August 20th. I hope that you have enjoyed our reading today and that you feel that God has lit your light and inspired you to tell people, someone, who is God putting on your heart that you want to share about something Jesus has done for you recently.
00:17:10
Speaker
I'm sure Jesus has done something for you recently that is wonderful. The way he helped you get through something, the way he healed you about something, the way he helped you be a better person about something.
00:17:21
Speaker
Because we can't do those things on our own. Jesus tells us that we need to abide in him. We can't do anything without him. So I know that there are things Jesus has done for you that you can share about.
00:17:37
Speaker
And part of the way that we can do that is by helping other people hear about this by clicking that share button down there, telling a friend about it so that they can also be encouraged to share what Jesus has done in their life or to get to know Jesus so that then they have something to share about and to click that thumbs up or that heart.
00:18:00
Speaker
Those are our light buttons. So I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day.

Session Conclusion and Invitation

00:18:06
Speaker
Thank you for joining me today for our reading. And guess what?
00:18:11
Speaker
That's right. I'll be here for everyone again for tomorrow's reading.
