Today's we will be reading the Book of Acts Chapter 10.

Today we will read about Peter given a vision of animals and told not to call "unclean or unholy" what God has made clean. God then told Peter to go with the mean who were looking for him, because God had sent them to Peter. Peter was brought to a man who was a Gentile believer in God, Cornelius. While Peter was telling Cornelius about Jesus the Holy Spirit came upon Cornelius and all those who were present, much to the surprise of Peter and the other Jewish believers with Peter.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about how God's love is not exclusive to anyone. God loves ALL people and He wants EVERYONE to come to Him! We, too, should be careful not to show favoritism to people who are believers vs nonbelievers or even among believers! God welcomes everyone who looks up to Him and does what is right! Thank you, God, for your great love that is for EVERYONE!

Hello everybody! Today is October 17th. Thank you for joining me for today's daily reading out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. For a little bit here, if you are watching the video, you see Scooby wants to sit on my lap. We'll see how long that lasts today. I'm so glad that you are joining and following us in our daily reading.
00:00:26
Speaker
This is such exciting reading, don't you think? ah We have been reading about... and God just doing amazing

Inclusivity in the Good News

00:00:34
Speaker
things. And today we are going to be hearing about how the good news is good news for everybody, even the Gentiles.
00:00:44
Speaker
But before we get to that, let's take out our bookmarking commitment motivational calendar and and get our sticker ready or whatever we're using to mark off our days because we're about to hear the Bible today.
00:00:59
Speaker
Well, let's head into our reading today. Scooby, as you can see, is a very attentive listener.
00:01:11
Speaker
All right.

Peter's Vision: Inclusion of Gentiles

00:01:12
Speaker
Today's reading is called
00:01:18
Speaker
Animals in a Big Sheet.
00:01:21
Speaker
And this is Acts chapter 10. So you may remember when Peter was with ah Peter went to Samaria, where I think it was Ananias.
00:01:32
Speaker
I can't remember the guy's name might have been Ananias, who was a ah disciple, which is just another word for a follower. He was a deacon in the church there. And so he had gone to Samaria when Saul had started and persecuting they the believers in Jerusalem.
00:01:51
Speaker
And although the people in Samaria had believed, they had not received the Holy Spirit. So Peter and John went over there. They actually went up there because ah Samaria is north of Jerusalem.
00:02:04
Speaker
So they traveled north to Samaria and they... put their hands on the people and they received the Holy Spirit. And we talked about that Peter and or one of the disciples, usually it needed to be Peter because Peter was the rock that Jesus said he would build his ah church on.
00:02:24
Speaker
So Peter had taken this role of leadership. And so it was very important that Peter see the Holy Spirit being given to the other people who were to be included.
00:02:36
Speaker
And that way there could be no dispute. God's spirit was unifying everybody. And here, and we spoke about that we would see the same thing in chapter 10 when the spirit was given to the Gentiles.
00:02:50
Speaker
And that's exactly what we're going to be seeing today. So Peter was ah present. In fact, God gave him a message telling him, and we're going to read that today, that the, ah not to call Things unclean or unholy.
00:03:07
Speaker
What God has made clean and holy. So here we go. One second here. i'm going to modify my camera so we can have a better view of Scooby. I try to point that down so you guys can see him.
00:03:21
Speaker
There we go. You like that, Scooby? You're on film. You don't even know it.
00:03:29
Speaker
Your adoring fans want to see you. Scooby just loves to look at me and watch me.

Cornelius' Angelic Encounter

00:03:35
Speaker
All right, so now there was a Roman army captain, and his name was Cornelius, and he lived in the city of Caesarea.
00:03:44
Speaker
He and his family were good people who believed in God, and he prayed to God often, and he gave a lot of his money to poor people. So one afternoon, around three o'clock in the afternoon, Cornelius saw one of God's angels.
00:04:01
Speaker
He saw it very clearly that And the angel came to him and said, Cornelius. And Cornelius was afraid. What, Lord?
00:04:12
Speaker
he asked. Your prayers have been a gift to God, said the angel. Your gifts to the poor people have been gifts to God. Now send some men to Joppa and ask them to bring Peter back.
00:04:27
Speaker
He is staying with Simon in a house by the sea. So the angel left and Cornelius called in two servants and one army man. And he told them what had happened.
00:04:38
Speaker
And then he sent them to find Peter in Joppa. The next day, Peter was praying. He was up on the flat roof of Simon's house and it was about noon.
00:04:49
Speaker
And the men Cornelius sent were coming into the city. So Peter was praying and he got hungry. And so someone in the house started making lunch for him.

Breaking Dietary Laws: All Are Clean

00:05:00
Speaker
And while Peter waited, he saw a vision in his mind.
00:05:04
Speaker
And it was a vision that God was showing him. Peter saw heaven open up. And then something like a big sheet came down and it was held up by its corners and different kinds of animals were in the sheet.
00:05:24
Speaker
There were animals with four feet. There were animals like snakes and turtles, and there were birds. And a voice said, Get up, Peter.
00:05:36
Speaker
Choose one of these to eat. I can't, Lord, said Peter. These are not the animals that you allow us to eat. Then the voice talked again.
00:05:49
Speaker
God says it is all right, so do not say that you can't. I'm going to actually read this from our big Bible too, so we have understanding of what the big Bible says.
00:06:07
Speaker
A voice came to him and said, Peter, get up, kill and eat. But Peter said, certainly not, Lord, for never have I eaten anything unholy or unclean.
00:06:20
Speaker
Again, a voice came to him a second time and said, What God has made clean, you must not consider unholy. And this happened three times.
00:06:31
Speaker
And then the sheet was immediately taken up to heaven. Now,
00:06:38
Speaker
Peter was wondering what this meant. And while he was wondering what this meant, the men who were sent by Cornelius found where Simon's house was. They stopped by the gate and they called out, Is Peter staying here?
00:06:53
Speaker
and at the same time, the Holy Spirit then told Peter, Get up, go downstairs. Three men are here and they are looking for you. I sent them here, so go with them.
00:07:07
Speaker
I'm going to read that in out of our big Bible as well. It says, while peter was

Peter's Visit and Realization

00:07:13
Speaker
mulling over the vision the spirit said to him look here three men are looking for you but get up go downstairs and go with them without hesitating because i myself have sent them
00:07:31
Speaker
peter went down to see the men and he said peter why are you here Cornelius sent us, they said. He is a captain in the Roman army.
00:07:42
Speaker
He is a good man and he believes in God. And all the Jews say good things about him. An angel told Cornelius to bring you to his house and then he can hear what you have to tell him.
00:07:55
Speaker
Now Peter asked the men to come into Simon's house and they stayed there that night. The next day, Peter went with them, and some of Jesus' other followers came to the town, ah went also.
00:08:08
Speaker
And the day after that, they went to the town where Cornelius lived. So Peter went to see Cornelius at his house, and Cornelius was waiting for him. When Peter arrived, Cornelius bowed down at Peter's feet and worshipped him.
00:08:24
Speaker
But Peter said to him, Stand up! I am just a man like you are! So Peter and Cornelius talked, and then they went inside. And Peter saw many people there, because Cornelius had asked his family and some good friends to come over.
00:08:42
Speaker
Peter began to talk to them. You know the law of the Jewish people. We are not supposed to visit someone who is not Jewish. I'm going to read that out of our big Bible, too.
00:08:57
Speaker
It says, yourselves know that it is not permitted for a jewish man to associate with a non-jew or to visit him yet god has shown me that i should call no one unholy or unclean so i came without objection when i was sent for
00:09:16
Speaker
i see now that it is true God does not love one person more than another. He loves people from every nation and he welcomes every everyone who looks up to him and does what is right.

Jesus Brings Peace and Unity

00:09:33
Speaker
God sent the good news to his people, and it's good news about the peace that Jesus brings, said Peter. Jesus is the Lord of everything, said Peter. And you know how God gave Jesus his Holy Spirit.
00:09:47
Speaker
God gave him power. And you know the good things that Jesus did. You know how he made people well. And that's because God was with him.
00:09:59
Speaker
We saw what Jesus did, said Peter, and he was killed on a cross, but God made him alive again. Some of us even saw him and we even ate and drank with him.
00:10:12
Speaker
Jesus told us to teach people, said Peter. He told us to say that he is the one God chose. God chose Jesus to judge people and all the prophets tell about him.
00:10:26
Speaker
They say he forgives the sins of very everyone who believes in him. Now suddenly the Holy Spirit came on Cornelius and the others and they started talking in other languages.
00:10:40
Speaker
They were praising God. Now the Jews who were with Peter were very surprised and that's because Cornelius and his friends were not Jewish. Can we stop them from being baptized?
00:10:54
Speaker
asked Peter.
00:10:57
Speaker
I'm going to read that out of the big Bible here as well.
00:11:03
Speaker
Can anyone refuse water for these to be immersed who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did? So he commanded that they be baptized, that water be brought.
00:11:17
Speaker
And they were baptized. And they were baptized in Jesus's name. And then they asked Peter to stay with them for a while.
00:11:27
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:11:31
Speaker
God is love. God is so full of love. He loves everybody who will call upon his name. If you've been reading the Bible for a little while, you know that there were certainly allowed people who were not Jewish to become believers.
00:11:50
Speaker
and But if they were not born jewishw Jewish, they were called a proselyte. And so they were still considered Gentile believers. And there were areas for which they could not go.
00:12:01
Speaker
So now, as we saw the unification that God brought with the Sumerians in his spirit, there was now unification with the Gentiles.
00:12:13
Speaker
Well, guess what? That's everybody in the world now. So now Peter says that God does not love one person more than another. He loves people from every nation.
00:12:25
Speaker
He welcomes everyone who looks up to him and does what is right. And that is our daily application today. So if God himself loves everybody and he doesn't show favoritism, that's how Peter peter puts it in our big Bible, is that God does not show favoritism.
00:12:46
Speaker
then we also should not show favoritism. And Jesus also taught the disciples about this when he said that the the people on earth have a tendency to lord their power over one another.
00:13:00
Speaker
He said, this is not to be the case with you. you If one of you wants to be great, then you need to serve one another. he who is the least will be the greatest.
00:13:12
Speaker
Meaning we are supposed to serve to one another. I'm going to read where that action where God shows that he is not partial, not not does not have favoritism.
00:13:27
Speaker
It comes out of Deuteronomy.
00:13:32
Speaker
Chapter 10, verse 17. It says, For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awesome God who does not show partiality or take a bribe.
00:13:48
Speaker
And then it's also written in 2 Chronicles 19, chapter 19, verse 7, and where it says, Now then, let the fear of the Lord be upon you. Be very careful what you do, for there is no injustice or favoritism or bribe-taking with Adonai Eloheinu, the Lord God.
00:14:11
Speaker
So God does not show favoritism. And in our lives, we have a tendency to want to be favored or to be thought that we are liked better than other people. And if you are part of a family where you have brothers and sisters, don't we like to tease or maybe not tease and seriously say, well, I'm mom's favorite or I'm dad's favorite.
00:14:32
Speaker
And we can have a tendency to think or even to choose favorites.

God's Impartial Love

00:14:37
Speaker
But guess what? Our God has no favorites.
00:14:43
Speaker
Sin is sin and his love is love. Nothing is greater than one another. No sin is considered greater. They are all sins. It doesn't say that there are levels of sin.
00:14:56
Speaker
There are the Ten Commandments, which are the basis for our rules. But there is no level. Murder is just as bad as lying. And we have a tendency to place importance on one and calling one a greater crime than another.
00:15:11
Speaker
And they can come with steeper punishments. But as far as the way it's considered as just being sin, sin is still sin. Whether one lies, whether one is coveting, meaning that you want something that somebody else has.
00:15:25
Speaker
And we might not think that that seems, quote, fair. But it is fair because for God, there is no favoritism. He is impartial. He wants the scales to be balanced where no one is better than another.
00:15:41
Speaker
Now, we have ah our own earning of our treasures up in heaven where we can put up our treasures in heaven. But that is not favoritism. He says that we are storing up treasures in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy.
00:15:55
Speaker
and that's based upon our acts. It's not something that he is giving us just because he likes us better. We are ourselves earning our own treasures in heaven. And God is showing that the Jewish people, although they were the chosen method through which the Messiah would come,
00:16:14
Speaker
Now God is showing his great love to everybody without favoritism. Now we have a tendency in today's age to be what is called anti-Semitic or anti-Jewish.
00:16:26
Speaker
Saying that, well, they gave up their right to be God's chosen people and now we are God's chosen people and they are no longer loved by God like that. And that is not so. We are still looking forward and we are still working toward our Jewish brethren, brothers and sisters,
00:16:43
Speaker
to become part of our family and can be to be complete by believing that the messiah has come so it is not okay for us to hate our jewish brethren and it is not okay for us to hate other people either even whether they are muslim or whether they are of any other religion or even if they are of no religion We are not to hate people.
00:17:08
Speaker
God's love is for everybody. And God makes the sun and the rain to shine and to come down on sinners and those who are forgiven because he shows no partiality.
00:17:22
Speaker
Now, at the time of judgment, that will be the time of judgment and everybody will be judged accordingly. And we want to be shown that we are forgiven for our sins so that we may be written in that book of life.
00:17:33
Speaker
But there's not it's not partiality or favoritism. It's our free will choice to accept that gift. And so we want to be sure that we are also not showing favoritism to one another.
00:17:46
Speaker
and that's hard, isn't it? We want to show favorites. We want to build alliances and and be nicer to somebody else than to another person. But God does not do that.
00:17:58
Speaker
The Bible tells us he does not do that. He takes care. He shows ah protection over those who belong to him and trust in him. But that's not favoritism.
00:18:10
Speaker
He does treat his believers differently because he is caring for those who are looking out for him, who are not looking out for him, but but who are looking to him. But that is not a favoritism.
00:18:21
Speaker
it is the fact that It is favoritism in terms of... um caring for his children who are looking out, looking toward him, who are looking to him for protection.
00:18:35
Speaker
But in terms of once we are believers, there is no favoritism among people where people are not accepted and are accepted. So there is that. So I guess in that term, there is sort of that favoritism, but it's not.
00:18:50
Speaker
He's taking care of the people who are looking to him and having faith in him. So he is honoring that faith and he is caring for them. But it's not a true favoritism where he is saying, well, I won't care for these people. I won't care for those people.
00:19:03
Speaker
I will care for these people. mean It says that um he welcomes everyone who looks up to him and does what is right. it is That is what we are referring to.
00:19:17
Speaker
So I hope that that was clear.
00:19:21
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today and that you feel accepting and loving toward our fellow believers.

Embracing Equality and Service

00:19:30
Speaker
And that we are encouraged not to show favoritism.
00:19:33
Speaker
I know even for me, that's especially hard. I like to feel like I am um favored at times, ah whether it's at work or we feel like we've earned a position of of status or something. But ah God tells us that's not the way we are supposed to be.
00:19:50
Speaker
So ah that tells me I have something to work on.
00:19:55
Speaker
Well, thank you for joining me today. i would like to encourage you to please click your liked button so that we can continue to help spread the word about reading God's word so that everybody who hears this message can know that they are also welcome to join God's family.
00:20:09
Speaker
They are not excluded. God doesn't look unfavorably upon anybody who desires to know him and believe in him. All are welcome who want to believe in him and do what is right.
00:20:22
Speaker
So if you have a like button, it looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart. It could be a share. It could be a follow, a subscribe. One of those buttons. And it helps us spread the word about reading God's word.
00:20:35
Speaker
