Today's we will be reading the Book of Acts Chapters 13.

Today we will read about the Saul (now becoming known as Paul) and Barnabas being told to go do what God had chosen them to do, and they did it, resulting in joyous growth of believers in Jesus among both Jewish people and Gentiles!

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of US obeying God's call to do whatever it is that God has called for us to do, starting with asking God what name He has given us, which will help us figure out what direction God is calling us and what exactly we are supposed to do with our daily lives for God.

Introduction and Daily Reading

00:00:02
Speaker
Welcome back everybody. Today is the daily reading for October 19th out of the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley. My name is Robin. I'm within the Family Way Coaching and it is my pleasure to bring you this really this reading event on a daily basis.

God's Fulfillment of Prophecy Discussion

00:00:21
Speaker
If you are using your bookmarking commitment calendar, go ahead and get that out and get your sticker ready because we are about to hear the Bible today. and a lot of the Bible we have today.
00:00:33
Speaker
Today, we are going to be looking at God's continual fulfillment of prophecy in the scripture relating to Jesus. And we're going to be looking at the impact that we can have in the community for good or for bad.
00:00:48
Speaker
So let's head up

Acts 13 and Saul's Message

00:00:49
Speaker
our Bible today. We are going to be reading in Acts chapter 13. And there is a bit of detail that is not included ah in our version because it's the condensed version.
00:01:00
Speaker
But I want us to get the full feel of this ah speech that Paul, ah then known as Saul, was giving to the people as he was invited to speak if he had a quote, word of encouragement for the people.
00:01:14
Speaker
And did he have a word of encouragement today? So I wanted to include all of that because it shows the importance of knowing the whole

Barnabas and Saul's Mission Begins

00:01:25
Speaker
picture. He gives a condensed version of the whole picture of, of, uh,
00:01:31
Speaker
the Bible ah of God's prophecy fulfillment in Jesus and how it came about. So it's really good if if we just have like a condensed version that kind of tells how the scripture was fulfilled and how God brought his promise about.
00:01:49
Speaker
So let's look at chapter 13 and then I will insert ah verses from our big Bible into our reading today as well.
00:01:59
Speaker
So what we left off with yesterday is that Barnabas and Saul finished their job in Jerusalem and they went back to Antioch and they took John Mark with them. So now there were many prophets and teachers among Jesus's followers in Antioch.
00:02:14
Speaker
There was Barnabas, Saul, and several others lived there. One of the men had even grown up with King Herod in his household. Now one day these men were worshiping the Lord and they went without food that day.
00:02:29
Speaker
They were fasting. The Holy Spirit said to them, pick Barnabas and Saul and send them to do the work I chose for them to do.
00:02:40
Speaker
The men prayed. They put their hands on Barnabas and Saul and then they sent them on their way. Barnabas and Saul took John Mark with them.
00:02:51
Speaker
He was their helper. First they sailed to Cyprus and there they taught God's word in the town's worship houses. And they went all over the island. And at last they came to the city of Paphos.
00:03:04
Speaker
A Jewish man who did magic lived there. And the governor lived there too. He was the leader of the island. The governor was a smart man. So he sent for Barnabas and Saul.

Confrontation with a Magician

00:03:17
Speaker
And he wanted to hear God's word. But the man who did magic worked against them. He tried to keep the governor from believing in them. Now Saul was full of God's Holy Spirit.
00:03:31
Speaker
He looked right at the man who did magic, and he said to him, You are Satan's child. You are an enemy of what is right. You are full of lies and tricks.
00:03:43
Speaker
Won't you ever stop trying to change the right ways of God? Now God is against you, and you will lose your sight. You will not be able to see the sunlight for a while.
00:03:56
Speaker
Now all of a sudden, the man could not see. He felt for things around him, and he tried to find somebody to take his hand because now he needed somebody to lead him.
00:04:09
Speaker
When the governor saw that, he believed the teaching about Jesus. And now Saul was starting to become known as Paul.

Jesus as Fulfillment of God's Promise

00:04:18
Speaker
Now he and his friends sailed to another city, and then John Mark went back to Jerusalem.
00:04:25
Speaker
Barnabas and Paul went on to the next town, and there they went into the town's worship house. It was the worship day, so they sat down. The worship leaders read from the law, and they read from the prophets' books.
00:04:39
Speaker
Then they talked to Barnabas and Saul. They said, You may talk if you have any word of encouragement for the people. So Paul stood up and he talked to both the people who were Jewish and he talked to the people who were not Jewish.
00:04:56
Speaker
And here's where we're going to insert verses 16 through 39 in Acts chapter 13 from our big Bible today.
00:05:10
Speaker
Paul stood up and he said, men of Israel and God fearers. That's where he was addressing both the Jews and the Gentiles. Listen, the God of this people, Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt.
00:05:27
Speaker
And with an outstretched arm, he led them out there. And all of this took about 450 years. years he put up with them and the fairness and when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of canaan their land as an inheritance and all of this took about four hundred and fifty years And after that, he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
00:05:50
Speaker
And then the people asked for a king, and God gave them Saul, son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, for 40 years. After removing him, he raised up David to be their king.
00:06:03
Speaker
And he also testified about him and said, "'I have found David, the son of Jesse, ah man after my heart, who will do my will.'" And from this man's seed, in keeping with his promise, God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, known in Hebrew as Yeshua.
00:06:24
Speaker
Before his coming, John had proclaimed an immersion of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was completing his service, he said, What do you suppose me to be?
00:06:36
Speaker
i am not he, meaning the promised one. But behold, one is coming after me, whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.
00:06:49
Speaker
Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who are God-fearers, it is to us the message of this salvation has been sent.
00:07:00
Speaker
For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, not recognizing him or saying or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these words by condemning him.
00:07:14
Speaker
Though they found no charge worthy of a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. And when they had carried out all that had been written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.
00:07:28
Speaker
But God raised him from the dead. For many days he appeared to those who had come up from the Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.
00:07:41
Speaker
And we proclaim to you good news. The promise of the fathers has arrived. For God has fulfilled this promise to the children.
00:07:53
Speaker
to us by raising up Jesus, known as Yeshua, as it is also written in the second Psalm, you are my son and today I have become your father.
00:08:08
Speaker
But since he raised him up from the dead, never to return to decay, he has spoken in this way, i will give you the holy and sure mercies of David,
00:08:22
Speaker
Therefore, he also says in another psalm, you will not permit your Holy One to see decay. For after David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he went to sleep and was laid with his fathers and saw decay.
00:08:38
Speaker
But the one whom God raised up did not see decay. Therefore, let it be known to you, brothers, that through this one is proclaimed to you the removal of sins, in including all those from which you could not be set right by the Torah of Moses.
00:09:02
Speaker
Through this one, everyone who keeps trusting is made righteous. Be careful then, so that what is said in the prophets may not come upon you.
00:09:20
Speaker
Paul then told the people these words that were from God to the prophet Habakkuk. Look, you people who doubt and laugh, watch and be surprised.
00:09:33
Speaker
I am going to do something in your days and you won't believe what I'm going to do. You wouldn't believe it even if somebody told you it would happen.

Spreading the Word Despite Opposition

00:09:45
Speaker
Now, after the worship time, the people asked Paul and Barnabas to talk to him again, to talk to them again.
00:09:53
Speaker
And as Paul and Barnabas were going out,
00:09:59
Speaker
Oh, I wanted to read the part from our big Bible and I've lost my place there.
00:10:06
Speaker
Oh.
00:10:10
Speaker
It's not time yet. Okay, so after the worship time, people asked Paul and Barnabas to talk to them again. Then Paul and Barnabas left, and many of the people there went with them.
00:10:23
Speaker
So Paul and Barnabas talked with them, and they told them to keep on following God. Now the next worship day came, and almost everybody in the town came to the town's worship house, and they came to hear about Jesus.
00:10:41
Speaker
Now the Jewish leaders saw how many people were there and that made them angry. They were jealous. They wished that all those people had come to follow them.
00:10:52
Speaker
So they said horrible things about what Paul was saying. yeah But Paul and Barnabas were bold. They said, I'm going to insert this.
00:11:04
Speaker
We had to tell this message to the Jews first, but you are turning against it. You don't think you're good enough to live forever. So we will tell this message to people who are not Jewish.
00:11:16
Speaker
God told us to do this, said Paul. and And Isaiah said God's words in this way. For the Lord has commanded us, for so the Lord has commanded us, I have placed you as a light to the nations so that you may bring salvation to the end of the earth.
00:11:38
Speaker
This is the quotation from Isaiah 49, verse 6. And in Isaiah 49, verse 6, the full verse says that God is speaking. And he says, I love this.
00:11:51
Speaker
It is too trifling a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and restore the preserved ones of Israel. He's speaking to Jesus.
00:12:02
Speaker
It's too small a thing that Jesus should be raised up. For the tribes of Jacob to restore the preserved ones of Israel. So I will give you as a light for the nations that you should be my salvation to the end of the earth.
00:12:22
Speaker
Now, when the Gentiles heard this, they were thrilled. Don't you love that? The Gentiles were thrilled and they glorified the word of the Lord.
00:12:33
Speaker
And as many had been inscribed for eternal life, believed. People who were not Jewish were so glad. They thought God's word was important.
00:12:45
Speaker
And so God's word went through the whole land. But the Jewish leaders got some important women upset about it. And then they got the leaders of the city upset about it.
00:12:56
Speaker
So they had some people do mean things to Paul and Barnabas. And they sent the two men out of the city. And as Paul and Barnabas left that city, they shook the dust off their feet against them, just as Jesus had taught them to do if there was a city that would not welcome the message about him.
00:13:17
Speaker
And Jesus's followers were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. And Paul and Barnabas went on to the city of Iconium. And that is the end of our reading today.

Personal Purpose and Obedience

00:13:32
Speaker
i love today's reading. You know, every day is just so exciting. God's word is so exciting. I love these testimony stories, these witness statements of of the acts of what happened as God was growing his church.
00:13:48
Speaker
I love the fulfillment of scripture that God had said that it was such a, it was too small a thing for him to only send Jesus to be the savior for the, for Israel alone.
00:13:59
Speaker
And so God was going to make Jesus the savior for all of the nations, all of the world. And this was written to them way back in Isaiah 49. i love it god's word is still being fulfilled it did not stop god's word didn't just stop in the old covenant because jesus had come jesus was fulfilling this ah prophecy about him And so we see that Paul and Barnabas were sent to do the work that God had sent for them to do.
00:14:36
Speaker
So God spoke to the Holy Spirit. ah God sent the Holy Spirit to tell them to send Paul and Barnabas to go do the work that they were supposed to do. And so they went and they did it.
00:14:48
Speaker
And so that is our big daily application today, is that God has work for us to do. He has chosen you to do something. And so it's important that you go out and do whatever it is that God has made for you to do.
00:15:03
Speaker
it is important for me to do the work that God has made for me to do. And part of that work can be found in asking God who he called you to be.
00:15:14
Speaker
For the name that he gave me is obedient witness. And I am God's obedient witness. I come up and I do my recording every day, even when I'm in a hurry or I'm tired or I'm frustrated because my internet keeps...
00:15:31
Speaker
disconnecting and I have to restart over again. i keep doing it and I'm obedient. I don't skip a day. I was very late getting a particular day out this past week and I was so frustrated because my connection just wouldn't work. It kept cutting me off five, six times.
00:15:48
Speaker
And I had, um, been gone all day on it was on my Sabbath day on Saturday so I was out with my husband and sometimes it's really hard for me to get going on it on Saturday night when we get home and then for some reason it's like I call that the witching hour it just it just doesn't want to work on Saturdays and I don't know what the deal is because honestly it works in every other area of my house the TV is still working but for some reason my laptop which I bought brand new for for doing all of this stuff it just doesn't stay connected
00:16:19
Speaker
And I even had that trouble yesterday too, and I did it during the daytime. But I am obedient. I keep pushing through. i don't let these things stop me because God has given me work to do.
00:16:30
Speaker
i am his witness. So as I experience ah God's teaching me, i want to share with you what he is teaching me. And it is so important that we do the work that God has given us to do.
00:16:43
Speaker
We have great books out called ah like The Purpose Driven Life. And so I am definitely purpose driven. And while I enjoyed The Purpose Driven Life book, it was more of a general purpose for all of Christians. And I needed to know my personal purpose.

Understanding and Obeying God's Calling

00:17:00
Speaker
my individual calling, because we we like to remind each other that we have an individual purpose. And that I did not find specifically, not that I'm speaking poorly about the book, I liked the book.
00:17:13
Speaker
It teaches us that we all have purpose, but it did not help me find my purpose. God showed me and is continually showing me the work that he has for me to do.
00:17:25
Speaker
And part of that big purpose came when he ah gave me the teaching of Jamie Winship to show me identity exchange. And you can read about that at identityexchange.com.
00:17:38
Speaker
And it's exchanging the names that we call ourselves, such as useless or or i don't have a purpose or failure or or just i don't know what I'm good at. I don't know what I'm supposed to do.
00:17:51
Speaker
And we ask God and we say, What is the name that you have given me? We see here even today that Paul used to be called Saul. So there is often a name change given in the Bible.
00:18:07
Speaker
There are names that God gives us. Jesus has many names. And so who he is, is in part defined by his names. What he does, his work is in part defined by his names. He is our savior.
00:18:24
Speaker
He is Emmanuel, which means God with us. He is ah ah ah so many things, Prince of Peace. In him, there was no violence to be found.
00:18:35
Speaker
And there the that tells us who he is and it helps us to know who he is. In that same way, once we ask God, what is the name that you have given us?
00:18:48
Speaker
It helps us to know our purpose because part of our purpose is defined in our name. And we can have more than one name. The first name he gave me was obedient.
00:19:00
Speaker
So I became more obedient. Then you be the name that God gave you. And then I asked him again, said, do you have another name for me? And he gave me witness. So I became in purposefully being his witness.
00:19:15
Speaker
Now I was already doing this event, but once I started to see myself as God's obedient witness, It really made me feel more purposeful.
00:19:27
Speaker
And so I deliberately do and look for God's direction in my life every day where I ask him, since I am obedient, what is it you are giving me to do today that I can obey and do Who are you wanting me to talk to?
00:19:42
Speaker
Who do you want me to witness to? Now, witnessing doesn't simply mean let me tell you about Jesus. It means telling people about everything that God shows me. So it's the different lessons that God presents through the scripture, which are these daily applications.
00:19:58
Speaker
So there are many ways that we can be who we are created to be. And we talked the other day about being who we are the right way. So that's very important that we not only be who we are, but we obey and do what God has called us to do.
00:20:16
Speaker
We have purpose. We have jobs that God has given us. And so here we see the example of Paul and Barnabas doing what they were supposed to do. And they did it boldly.
00:20:29
Speaker
And as a result of their obedience, many people came to know the Lord. Many people, both Gentiles and Jews, there was so much furthering of the kingdom.
00:20:43
Speaker
And God wants to use you and he wants to use me to further his kingdom as well. Because as are as we go about and do the work that we are meant to do, it involves making followers of Jesus, teaching them to obey all that he has commanded us to do, like to love one another.
00:21:02
Speaker
And so I encourage us to do that in these daily applications and in these daily Bible readings. So this event, thank you for listening or watching as you listen and watch for me to do what I am called to do. You are simply seeing my obedience.
00:21:19
Speaker
And so I tell you that so that you can see the example of how God is doing that in my life. so that you can see I'm not special. I'm just simply a person doing what God called me to do. so And you can also do the exact same thing.
00:21:35
Speaker
So I want to encourage you to do that. To start with asking God, what name have you given me? And then just listen. And the words that pop into your mind are the Holy Spirit speaking to you.
00:21:47
Speaker
Nobody ever comes back and says, loser, unuseful, unmotivated. That is our enemy. When you hear a name, write it down.
00:21:58
Speaker
And you may not understand it at first, but God will reveal that to you with his Holy Spirit. So I hope that you feel motivated today and encouraged and that God has lit your light today, that you will go out and ask God what your name is so that you can be who God created you to be. So you can do like Paul and Barnabas, the work that he has chosen for you to do I know it's very exciting to me to to find out when God tells me, I want you to do this because that to me, I love and crave that one-on-one personal relationship.
00:22:34
Speaker
Our God is so intimate. He is involved in our daily lives and he wants to be involved in our lives for every part of it. We just don't often let him be that in our lives.
00:22:47
Speaker
We think we've got it all under control or we think, oh I don't really need to involve him in this. I know what to do here. But the fact is, is that the more we incorporate this connection with God, the more fulfilled we will be, the more satisfied, the more excited we will be, the more filled with God's Holy Spirit we will be.
00:23:07
Speaker
And then we will be desiring to do more and more of what God has given us to do. and that's the excitement that you see in me. i I just can't contain it. I'm so thrilled. Just like we read today in the Big Bible, the Gentiles, when they heard that message, they were thrilled.
00:23:23
Speaker
I am thrilled. I hope that you feel thrilled and that you get your name and your and part of your purpose from God today.

Encouragement to Share the Bible Reading

00:23:34
Speaker
That is my prayer for you.
00:23:36
Speaker
So along with that, if you don't mind, I'd like to ask you to kindly click your light button to the show that you enjoyed today's reading so that we can encourage other people to see this video.
00:23:46
Speaker
it and It affects the, um I think they're, can't remember the word at this exact moment. It escapes me. the and the The program.
00:23:58
Speaker
where it, the metrics, something like that, where it will allow the video and the audio to be shown and pop up more on people's feeds so that they can see it. um The other day we reached 500 views in one 30-day period, one 28-day period.
00:24:13
Speaker
That does not mean that everybody is sitting down and listening or watching to the entire event in that and that reading. It does, however, mean that we are having a greater reach. And we are to go out and and to share this.
00:24:26
Speaker
So this helps God's word have a greater reach. It helps us spread the word about reading God's word. And that's my goal. And so ah I'm sure at least some of you are here because it's popped up on your feet.
00:24:38
Speaker
So I just want to encourage you to kind of spread that along to pay it forward by clicking that light button, which looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart. It might look like a subscribe or a follow if you are following or subscribing along on Apple Music or Amazon Music or whether you are podcast. Podbean, Podcast, Overcast, Cast Off, YouTube Audio, YouTube Video, wherever you are listening or watching ah to kindly share the event. Because it's not me. we're not I'm not looking for me to be shared.
00:25:09
Speaker
My goal is to spread the word about reading God's word. And I'm just asking you to help us in doing that. So thank you so much for being here with me today and every day. i will be here again tomorrow for tomorrow's daily reading through the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:25:26
Speaker
And until then, i hope you have a very blessed day, whatever day you get around to listening or watching this daily reading. See you then.
