Introduction and Podcast Beginnings

00:00:26
Ryan
Welcome to Real Hot Nerd Shit, a pop culture podcast where real hot nerds talk about real nerd shit. I'm your host, Ryan.
00:00:34
Shauna (she/her)
And I'm your co-host Shana.
00:00:36
Ryan
And on this episode of Real Hot Nerd Shit, we'll be talking about the movie Clerks in our theme in the rear view askew or the view askewniverse.
00:00:48
Ryan
We haven't decided yet, but we will come down on one. um We'll be talking about Kevin Smith movies over the next three episodes.
00:00:56
Kylan
Cool.
00:00:57
Shauna (she/her)
And to do that, we have our special guest hotner for the episode, Kylan, so welcome.
00:01:04
Kylan
Hey, welcome.
00:01:04
Ryan
Welcome.
00:01:05
Kylan
Thanks for having me.
00:01:07
Ryan
Really excited to have you. So, um I mean, you know, tiny backstory, because we always just share these. Um, myself and Shauna got the opportunity to do a panel with, uh, Kylan a couple of summers ago at the Flaming River Con. And, uh, we, I honestly think Kylan was kind of one of the people that.
00:01:30
Ryan
It reminded me that like you can just do podcasts. like You don't need to like put like your heart like your life's work into it. It can be something that you enjoy doing, like not as a profession.
00:01:43
Ryan
I wish it was a profession. I would absolutely, totally make a job out of this. But like I guess what I'm saying is like regular people have podcasts, too.
00:01:50
Kylan
Oh, yeah.
00:01:50
Ryan
you know I don't know. like It really encouraged me to be like, OK, I can do that. I know a person that has a podcast now.
00:01:57
Kylan
Well, look, I tell you, i I was on two. I'm still on one. They they hand these things out like chiclets. Look, if if I can do a podcast, anybody could do it, I promise you.
00:02:06
Ryan
You know what? You're right. And ah honestly, the thing that should motivate me is that like mediocre white dudes have it and they somehow monetize it, which is wild.
00:02:13
Kylan
Yes. Many, exactly.
00:02:16
Ryan
Too many. Too many, one could say. So we kind of realized we had a bunch of nerdy things in common. um But you know to introduce yourself, we always ask our guests, if a nerd is someone who is weirdly knowledgeable and passionate about something, and sometimes that thing is uncool, ah considering considered uncool by some people, ah what are you a nerd about?

Kylan's Film Passion and Kevin Smith Connection

00:02:44
Kylan
Alright, you know, I thought about this and I will tell you the one thing that I can tell you that I know for a fact people think is uncool but I will also say ah that Kevin Smith thinks is very cool is the Adventures of Buck Rubanzai Across the 8th Dimension. Like, I absolutely love that movie. If you want to know why I do podcasts, here's why. I would say So the movie came out in 1984.
00:03:17
Kylan
I must have seen it on HBO like a year or two later. So let's say 15, 1984.
00:03:21
Ryan
what year?
00:03:24
Ryan
okay
00:03:25
Kylan
So yeah, in ah and in in the 1900s as they say.
00:03:28
Ryan
Yes, correct.
00:03:30
Kylan
So 15, 16 year old me, I had seen ads for this. Like I was big into comics at that point. So I'd seen ads for for this movie.
00:03:43
Kylan
ah which never showed anywhere around where I was living in West Tennessee at that point. ah So I finally got to watch this movie and I became obsessed because Buck Rhubanzai was this guy who was a neurosurgeon.
00:03:59
Kylan
He was a neurosurgeon, an astrophysicist, a rock star, a race car driver. i He was fluent in like 12 languages.
00:04:07
Ryan
yeah
00:04:09
Kylan
He knew like six martial arts and I was like, I want to be that dude, right? And then, and it was sort of like one of those things like I didn't think could ever really happen, and he was surrounded by all these really cool ah people who were experts in their own fields, right?
00:04:14
Ryan
Yeah.
00:04:25
Kylan
So at this point, I knew nothing of Doc Savage, so I didn't realize that that was the inspiration, and I just had this. And then once I, as I got into more into history, and I got more into who,
00:04:40
Kylan
Albert Einstein was, and the fact that he was an essentially a Renaissance man, and I got to find out what that concept was, I was like, I don't have to just be, and I think at that point I was thinking about being a lawyer.
00:04:53
Kylan
I'm like, I don't have to just be a lawyer. I could be a writer, I could be this, I could be that, I could be all these things, right?
00:04:57
Ryan
Hey.
00:04:59
Kylan
And so, as I got older and I started finding opportunities to add things to my life, that that's why I did. so um That is the one thing that I am, that fandom, I'm legit passionate about.
00:05:14
Kylan
And Kevin Smith is too, I believe at one point, about, I guess at this point, five, six years ago, Kevin Smith was working to bring back Booker Rubanzai as a series.
00:05:30
Kylan
ah But this is one of those properties that nobody knows who owns the rights. And so,
00:05:37
Ryan
I think you're just going to say that nobody knows, period.
00:05:40
Kylan
Right, yeah and that too, that too, it's like, yeah I tried to explain this movie to people and they're gonna be like, what?
00:05:40
Ryan
But then, sure.
00:05:47
Kylan
So, um but yeah.
00:05:48
Ryan
I was looking at the plot synopsis, and i mean I'm just going to go ahead and read what rotten toma how Rotten Tomatoes called. It's got a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes.
00:05:59
Ryan
um but ah Buckaroo Banzai is caught with his trusted allies, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, in a battle to the death between evil red aliens and good black aliens from Planet 10.
00:06:12
Ryan
Shout out to the black aliens being good. ah Led by demonic dictator John Worfin,
00:06:15
Kylan
Mm hmm.
00:06:20
Ryan
who has taken over the body of a Italian scientist, Dr. Emilio Lazardo. The aliens try to get the over-thruster back from Buckaroo Banzai, but the good black aliens are willing to destroy the Earth rather than let these renegades return to their planet. Wow, I want to get so high and watch that movie.
00:06:42
Kylan
But you know what look at check out the cast and your jaw is gonna drop at who?
00:06:48
Ryan
Is this going to be like a, um, uh, what's it called?
00:06:48
Kylan
and
00:06:51
Ryan
Um, I already saw Jeff Goldblum. So the thing that I was going to say is, uh, like Rocky Horror, like you look at the cast of Rocky Horror and you're like, Susan Sarandon, what the fuck are you doing here?
00:06:57
Shauna (she/her)
any
00:06:59
Kylan
Yes, yes, yes it Yeah, it's
00:07:03
Ryan
John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Lloyd. Wow.
00:07:10
Kylan
that Peter Weller was Book Group Mind's Eye. That was my introduction to two Peter Weller was that movie.
00:07:15
Shauna (she/her)
because That's Optimus Prime, right?
00:07:19
Kylan
Robocop.
00:07:19
Shauna (she/her)
i know that but Oh, Robocop. No, wait, Peter Cullen.
00:07:22
Kylan
Right. Peter Cullen, right.
00:07:24
Shauna (she/her)
There we go. OK.
00:07:26
Kylan
Now, I will say this, if you look at the, if you happen, if you're a real deep Star Trek nerd, if you look at some of the, ah so some some of the tech manuals,
00:07:26
Ryan
Chris is in this movie.
00:07:39
Kylan
The propulsion systems were were built by Yo-Yo Dime Propulsion Systems, which is where the red lektroids operate from in Makaru Banzai.
00:07:52
Kylan
And they say that every now and then, that in every episode of The Next Generation, that the oscillation over thruster is somewhere in the...
00:07:53
Shauna (she/her)
Okay.
00:08:03
Kylan
I love Star Trek, don't get me wrong, but I'm not that
00:08:05
Ryan
Sure.
00:08:06
Kylan
Dedicated to look for the over thruster, you know in every episode is a lot of work.
00:08:09
Ryan
Sure. It's a lot of work. Yeah.
00:08:12
Kylan
Yeah, so
00:08:12
Ryan
Yeah. Very cool. I am thrilled about learning about this very niche nerd movie that Kevin Smith also likes. And I, again, this sounds like the kind of movie that you, like you get super high with your friends and you You ride it out. because like you know there's I have to imagine it's now almost 41 years old.
00:08:37
Kylan
Yeah, yeah.
00:08:38
Ryan
it you know there's There's a turning point in technology where it's still like campy and like anything made in 1984 is inherently going to be campy good versus like when things took a turn for campy bad when they were like trying too hard.
00:08:50
Kylan
Yes, yes.
00:08:55
Ryan
you know
00:08:56
Kylan
Right, yeah I will tell you, every time I watch this movie, I've always watched it sober. I've heard people say that And I think I'm probably the the one of like four people on the entire planet that willingly watches sober.
00:09:07
Ryan
and yeah
00:09:09
Kylan
But yeah, I've been told that some, actually one of my my best friends, he's like, I tried to watch this movie. I got like 10 minutes into it. I couldn't do it. I think maybe I need to take something. I'm like, you can.
00:09:19
Ryan
Yeah.
00:09:21
Kylan
I'm like, I can't explain why.
00:09:23
Ryan
Can't relate, but yeah, yeah.
00:09:24
Kylan
Yeah. But yeah, that's that's like my jam.
00:09:28
Ryan
Very cool.

Media Excitement: Drag Race and Buffy

00:09:29
Ryan
So um speaking of campy, we're going to we're going to transition into our general banter portion of the cast, as if, you know, we have not already been doing such, but While we were talking, Shauna started typing hers, which was um she watched her first episode of Drag Race.
00:09:49
Shauna (she/her)
Hmm.
00:09:49
Ryan
Are you a Drag Race person, Kylan? Are are you a drag fan?
00:09:53
Kylan
I okay, I I'm not specifically a drag fan now when I had my ah The the other podcast I was on geek watch one, which is another book group by as I reference but I
00:10:02
Ryan
Mm-hmm.
00:10:08
Kylan
So our podcast was connected to a local convention called Con on the Cop. And we did host a drag show one year.
00:10:16
Ryan
Okay.
00:10:19
Ryan
I wanted you to hear the name of that, by the way.
00:10:22
Kylan
Like we brought in a drag show one year. And I think that was like the year before, I think it was the year before.
00:10:25
Ryan
I'm sick.
00:10:30
Kylan
Well, we'll just say it's the year before things changed.
00:10:34
Ryan
Oh, got it, okay.
00:10:34
Kylan
That one with the well to well, I don't like to actually say it,
00:10:36
Ryan
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:37
Kylan
um i'm talking So, um, yes, yes, the panini.
00:10:39
Shauna (she/her)
The Panini.
00:10:41
Ryan
Panini uh-huh the the pan the pandemic. Oh, no, wait, I didn't want to say that one.
00:10:44
Kylan
Yes.
00:10:46
Ryan
I wanted to say the pan.
00:10:47
Kylan
Yeah, I heard panini.
00:10:47
Ryan
Damn it.
00:10:49
Kylan
a harleay ah her panini.
00:10:50
Ryan
I you did okay, so you're you have some exposure to drag but not like, you know, uh Sure, so, um Shauna What did you what did you think that was your first drag race episode ever?
00:10:51
Kylan
Sorry. So, yes. oh Yeah, yeah, i got I got exposure. Yes, yes.
00:11:05
Ryan
Did you say that when we were together?
00:11:05
Shauna (she/her)
yeah Yeah I didn't have like a real chance because we kind of were like jumping in and so like that's where I was like I was asking like a lot of questions and so I was like so wait and so apparently it was like this this episode was like a comedy sketch was like the premise for the challenge where they all play different roles and I was like wait is are they do they always do sketches because I wasn't sure like but like and I'm like oh okay like and it made sense like once I was like oh it's just like the nature of this one and like
00:11:07
Ryan
I
00:11:11
Ryan
Uh-huh, because we were talking.
00:11:26
Ryan
oh
00:11:31
Kylan
Mm hmm.
00:11:33
Shauna (she/her)
So it was really interesting to see because obviously like I've seen many a drag show It's not like I'm unfamiliar with the conceit like I just or even reality TV shows I just never has been my particular cup of tea, but I honestly I really liked that
00:11:49
Ryan
It's so fun.
00:11:49
Shauna (she/her)
I yeah it absolutely, like I get the hook. I, you know, so we have a local queen from Cleveland, Anya Nerve. And so they're like, our city specific specifically is very, you know, excited and there's like a real electricity and she's crushing it.
00:11:57
Ryan
me
00:12:04
Ryan
He's clutching it.
00:12:06
Shauna (she/her)
Like I could tell you know her is my eugness, nerve and talent through the roof. Like really was given.
00:12:13
Ryan
So it's even bigger because, so this is so season 17. We haven't had a Cleveland Queen on since season one in like the 2008, 2009 when it premiered.
00:12:27
Kylan
Yeah, yeah.
00:12:27
Ryan
So it's been a very long time since we've had representation and lots of, you know, not that Cleveland is like a smaller city, but of course the major metropolitan areas with booming drag communities are going to send the best of the best.
00:12:40
Kylan
Right.
00:12:41
Ryan
Cleveland, we just had a Columbus queen in season 11, so it's it was very exciting. um and it was it's I love seeing a Cleveland girl.
00:12:53
Ryan
She's you know
00:12:56
Ryan
Anya, I don't know if you'll ever listen to it, but you know, we we we're rooting for you, super heavy. um You're doing great, and we love to see black girls crushing it, especially black girls from Cleveland.
00:13:09
Ryan
Do work, Anya Nerv.
00:13:09
Kylan
Oh yeah.
00:13:12
Shauna (she/her)
Indeed.
00:13:12
Kylan
Awesome.
00:13:12
Ryan
So.
00:13:12
Shauna (she/her)
i'm I'm excited to watch more. Like, I was like, all right, I want to to catch up, watch the past episodes get like, because I really like jumped in into like a, no, no, no, we'll start with these three or four episodes of the season and we'll go from there.
00:13:17
Ryan
Oh yeah, 17 seasons worth.
00:13:24
Ryan
Okay, good, good.
00:13:24
Shauna (she/her)
But like, at least, but at least I feel distinctively good about wanting to do that. And I did not expect that. And I didn't think I would like dislike it, but I did not expect to be like, oh, I want to go two feet in.
00:13:31
Ryan
Mm-hmm.
00:13:35
Ryan
Yeah, yeah.
00:13:35
Shauna (she/her)
And like, I was very invested.
00:13:38
Ryan
Well, and it helps to have a Cleveland girl who's named Anya, which makes a wonderful, wonderful segue into arguably the greatest news of 2025, nay the decade, nay my life.
00:13:54
Ryan
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is officially getting rebooted, and Sarah Michelle Geller will be starring not as the primary antagonist, or protagonist but as a support character, which makes it even better because we're gonna get a new Slayer, and we're gonna get the whole Slayer universe, and everything's gonna be wonderful again, and I am hooking every single one of my, like, this is all I've got at this point.
00:14:21
Ryan
This is all I've got.
00:14:22
Shauna (she/her)
It's been bad.
00:14:24
Ryan
it's It's been a shitty, shitty couple of years and you know what?
00:14:24
Shauna (she/her)
It's been bad.
00:14:30
Ryan
Seeing Sarah Michelle Gellert, so... she confirmed it without confirming it. Okay. So I'm just going to, I'm just going to nerd dump for like 30 seconds. So, you know, obviously this has been talked about for any number of years, a reboot, a reboot, a reboot. Um, but you know, it never really gained traction. There was one that was announced before it was even solidified in the middle of the panini. Uh, and that was ah the show runner was, was a black woman who was really excited and, and
00:15:04
Ryan
Truthfully, I don't even, it just went away, like it just never happened. um And then she confirmed that it was being shelved, but now i it was reported by Deadline.
00:15:15
Ryan
So, you know, this is not just a ah gossip, you know, like, blog.
00:15:21
Shauna (she/her)
and Anya herself at McCaulfield.
00:15:23
Ryan
Okay, so that's not gonna stay next. So, as, do you see me? I'm losing control of my limbs.
00:15:29
Kylan
i I love it. No, this is awesome. I love it.
00:15:31
Ryan
Yes. So, uh...
00:15:33
Shauna (she/her)
Your native version is on full display, like just completely.
00:15:35
Ryan
Yes, yes, yes! So obviously I'm like, okay, I gotta go, I gotta go fact check.
00:15:38
Shauna (she/her)
I love that.
00:15:41
Ryan
Like, so someone had sent it to me and I was like, I'm not believing shit until I see it. And then I went to Sarah Michelle Geller's page, obviously, first.
00:15:52
Ryan
But before I could even search for Sarah Michelle Geller's page, I saw that Emma Caulfield, who played Anya Christina Emanuela Jenkins, or on Yanka, she posted, oh my God, yay.
00:16:08
Ryan
Thank you. What a wonderful gift you're giving me as thank you. I do accept that. I do accept that next piece of Buffy merch. Um, so but Emma Caulfield, uh, screenshot the news and post like it's happening with like, you know, official confirmation. And then I went to SMG's page and she was wearing a pair of pajamas that have sushi on them that are referred to in season.
00:16:37
Ryan
Four. episode. Ah, God, I'm going to swing and guess eight, but it is 14. And that episode is called Goodbye, Iowa. And she gives a rousing speech and she stands up and she says, this would have been a lot more motivating if I wasn't wearing my yummy sushi pajamas. And so her posting the yummy sushi pajamas was like the most informal, formal confirmation that you could get that this is really fucking happening.
00:17:08
Ryan
And I am simply losing my mind.
00:17:12
Shauna (she/her)
We are so back and I love it.
00:17:13
Ryan
We are so mad.
00:17:14
Kylan
Now, I would tell you, I am a bit of a fan.
00:17:15
Ryan
So you're the fan.
00:17:16
Shauna (she/her)
Okay, so I have questions.
00:17:18
Ryan
Yes, please. yeah Okay, good.
00:17:22
Kylan
But, okay, I'm more of an Angel fan. Like, I i've watched all of Angel, like, I don't know how many times.
00:17:26
Ryan
That's fine.
00:17:27
Shauna (she/her)
I love Angel.
00:17:30
Ryan
Yeah.
00:17:30
Kylan
Now, the funny thing, the interesting thing is is that David Bourneas's SEAL Team series has ended, and he he's he's been kind of coy about what he's doing next.
00:17:35
Ryan
Mm-hmm.
00:17:43
Shauna (she/her)
Old ass vampires! Old ass vampires!
00:17:46
Kylan
I'm just saying.
00:17:47
Ryan
To be fair, he does look really, really good.
00:17:48
Kylan
I'm just saying.
00:17:52
Kylan
Yes.
00:17:52
Ryan
Like, he looks really good. James Marsters looks old. Like, we cannot... James Marsters looks like an old white guy. David Boreanaz has a little bit of spice in him, so, you know, not in the racist kind of way, like in the in the in the color.
00:18:04
Kylan
No, I know. Right.
00:18:05
Ryan
Yeah, you know what? I'm not doing great with my social cues tonight, perhaps because I just overloaded all of my my masking skills.
00:18:09
Kylan
ah yeah
00:18:13
Shauna (she/her)
my mind
00:18:15
Ryan
um But yeah, he has aged really, really nicely. wow um Okay, so you are a fan.
00:18:23
Shauna (she/her)
yeah
00:18:24
Kylan
Yes.
00:18:25
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah Okay, so it's being called a reboot but it doesn't I'm wondering is it going to be a reboot a continuation or a reimagining because I feel like you cannot
00:18:25
Ryan
Shauna, please proceed with your questions.
00:18:43
Shauna (she/her)
If it is it a reboot where the season it's just a completely separate continuity and it's now instead of Giles, it's going to be this former Slayer. Because some reason there now can be multiple slayers or maybe if she's still playing Buffy Summers, because that's obviously the like, you know, is this all like an alternate universe where she gets to age and then is coming back in or is it going to be a continuation where?
00:19:09
Shauna (she/her)
all of these many slayers, because spoiler alert for this 20-year-plus ending of a series, but, you know, all of the slayers across the world were activated, and so it ended up being...
00:19:11
Ryan
Right. right
00:19:20
Ryan
Yes.
00:19:22
Shauna (she/her)
And so now, with that, there's more slayers, but then do they dwindle?
00:19:24
Ryan
there's more Slayers.
00:19:28
Shauna (she/her)
Are they getting hunted? Now there's only one left, and it's SMG and SMG's Buffy, like...
00:19:33
Ryan
So shout out to Slayer Fest 98, one of the other podcasts that inspired me to make a podcast.
00:19:39
Shauna (she/her)
you
00:19:42
Ryan
um they They did a special episode about it because obviously their are namesake is Buffy season three episode ah Homecoming.
00:19:53
Shauna (she/her)
Love that episode
00:19:53
Ryan
and Same one of them top ten top top ten for sure um But they were talking apparently the the news that exists that has been talked about in the circles um is that it's a continuation and that Buffy will be playing a guidance counselor at a school where the Slayer the new Slayer is and in it ah apparently like the first episode, you're not gonna know who the Slayer is until like, you know, that's the big reveal or something like that.
00:20:27
Ryan
Kind of like the episode potential where there's the misdirect that Dawn is supposed to be the the potential and not Amanda, I think is the character.
00:20:33
Shauna (she/her)
a
00:20:36
Shauna (she/her)
so So I think, and this is a very easy prediction, and I think it's going to be true, and I hope it's true. this The new Slayer is not going to be a white girl.
00:20:50
Ryan
I think that's fair to say.
00:20:51
Shauna (she/her)
That is a, that is a, like I know that's a real easy, like I'm like calling my shot and it's a single, but like, I feel still pretty good about it, just the same.
00:20:53
Ryan
yeah
00:20:57
Ryan
Yeah.
00:21:00
Ryan
Yeah, it's a slam dunk.
00:21:01
Shauna (she/her)
And like, yeah.
00:21:03
Ryan
Did, um, Kylen, did you listen to Slayer's, the audiobook?
00:21:08
Kylan
I did not know. I didn't even know that was going to happen.
00:21:10
Ryan
It's fine. Yeah, it's fine. It scratches an itch. um But they're the main character is a black girl named Indira. So my thoughts and theories thus far are that you know perhaps they'll pick up Indira and bring her in. like She seemed to be you know a really good fit as a voice actor. I don't i can't remember i know she's from something else. like I know the actress who plays her, but it's escaping me right now.
00:21:40
Ryan
um But if I'm being honest, I kind of wish we were getting an animated series because you can do so much more. So for those that don't know, there is ah an abandoned like 13 minute pilot, at not 13 minutes, it's like less than 10 minutes um of the original, almost made Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the animated series um that featured the voices of Allison Hannigan and Nicholas Brendan.
00:22:13
Ryan
Like, it was official, official. And in the very first...
00:22:16
Shauna (she/her)
And...
00:22:17
Ryan
Yes?
00:22:18
Shauna (she/her)
It looks very, very similar to the Clerks cartoon.
00:22:22
Kylan
Oh, okay.
00:22:23
Ryan
It does.
00:22:23
Shauna (she/her)
Just as a like the animation style is, you would think that, like oh, it is a continuation in that 2000z animation style.
00:22:31
Ryan
Yes. Also, like the thick outline of characters, ah like what was it called?
00:22:33
Shauna (she/her)
ah Just had to bring it back to this this episode.
00:22:40
Ryan
Clone High. Like it also had the animation style of Clone High, if anyone knows that.
00:22:41
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah.
00:22:43
Kylan
Okay, now I have, I'll go ahead then I have a question when you get done.
00:22:44
Ryan
So, please.
00:22:48
Kylan
Go ahead, but then I have a question for you.
00:22:48
Ryan
Sure. So in the very first episode in that episode, like there's a dragon. So like they can do so much more with it animated. And we have we wouldn't have to deal with the old ass vampires of it all. We wouldn't have to figure out how to fix that. um And most importantly, Emma Caulfield has MS. And I don't know how like managed it is.
00:23:14
Shauna (she/her)
Well, she's also dead.
00:23:16
Ryan
was True, true, true, true, true.
00:23:20
Shauna (she/her)
Like, you could just bring her back as a ghost, like go full Agatha on it, and just be like, oh, like, it's fine.
00:23:20
Ryan
But like...
00:23:24
Ryan
True. True. Yeah.
00:23:26
Kylan
true okay so alright so at the end of of angel like you know there there's the big apocalypse you know where in the last the last thing you see is is angel and the crew then the gangs in there and then all these
00:23:26
Ryan
Well, she does become a ghost in the comics, which are all right behind me in the dark horse comics.
00:23:27
Shauna (she/her)
Well, like, see? And actually, me too, now, thanks to you, but.
00:23:33
Ryan
Yeah. Yes. Yes. Okay. So go ahead with your comment, uh, question.
00:23:41
Ryan
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:23:50
Ryan
Again.
00:23:54
Kylan
demons and I think there's a dragon that's all kind of coming for them then that's the last theme then I know it's continued in the comics I don't know if the comics are considered canon my question is this would that would the ending is the ending of Angel considered for this or is it how Buffy ended
00:23:56
Ryan
Yeah. Yep. Yeah.
00:24:02
Ryan
Mm-hmm.
00:24:14
Ryan
question.
00:24:16
Shauna (she/her)
When that's where I kind of want a, i kind of there're so i used to i'm i um this might shock you, but I'm a nerd. And so I used to do policy debate in high school. It's actually where I met my spouse. But there was a kind of argument you could make called a permutation.
00:24:35
Shauna (she/her)
and it was like where you combined the original plan with then another plan that you do and you would say because the saying was the perm solves best and I think that the perm solves best here as well because the I think you both do a continuation and a soft reboot I think you you do not need to stick to cannon that does not fit your story just for the sake of it being one continuous story because people who care aren't going like if what oh you changed it well if it works better
00:24:59
Kylan
Right.
00:25:04
Shauna (she/her)
Like it doesn't have to be, it can still be set in a like theoretical universe and just let people deal with that. Like if anything, the Marvel movies have really taught us that we are, we can live with some fungibility and everything.
00:25:17
Shauna (she/her)
Like you can work through it.
00:25:17
Kylan
Yes, exactly.
00:25:19
Shauna (she/her)
It's fine.
00:25:20
Ryan
really think that so you know ah the whole thing was like that that apocalypse in the comics is LA specific and so you know LA to be saved gets like I think LA gets transported to a hell dimension and like that's how you know the rest of the world is is
00:25:38
Kylan
Right, yeah.
00:25:42
Ryan
um uh like saved from being an apocalypse that is the one thing that every single time i watch these i'm like what the fuck you know like this is happening so this is only happening in the sunny dale zip code there's no other issues in the entire world related we know that there's a hellmouth in cleveland before either of you correct me we know that there's a hellmouth in cleveland but you know we never hear about what's going on over there so The fact that there was an apocalypse in LA at the end of Angel, to me, doesn't necessarily dictate anything that needs to happen in this.
00:26:17
Kylan
Okay.
00:26:19
Ryan
However, one of the things that they said on Slayer Fest 98 that I thought was really interesting... was how cool would it be if we get this, like, ah retrospective of what happened, and it includes, like, you know, Willow teleporting all of the Slayers to LA, and that's how they beat back that apocalypse, is, you know, Angel Investigations and, you know, a bunch of a Slayer crew get dispatched to take out these fucking demons, and that would be really sick.
00:26:50
Kylan
I I I would like that actually I mean I and now I would say as far as the hellmouth in Cleveland goes There there is another fandom that that confirms the hellmouth in Cleveland Supernatural, so I'm pretty sure that and and and ah Sam and Dean they spend a lot of time in Ohio Yeah Yeah, so it's so Sam and Dean spent a lot of time in Ohio a lot of time.
00:26:54
Ryan
Mm-hmm.
00:27:05
Ryan
Oh.
00:27:08
Shauna (she/her)
Yes, I Mean I'd argue that none of us
00:27:11
Ryan
so Oh, you mean Buffy for boys? Buffy for boys is supernatural.
00:27:19
Kylan
So I And they've even been to Cleveland. ah So, you know, I would say...
00:27:21
Ryan
Yes. Joss Whedon loves Ohio.
00:27:24
Kylan
yeah Yeah, so I would say Sam and Dean probably were handling whatever... Well, okay, I know they're dead now. But when they were alive, I'm pretty sure they were handling whatever was going on.
00:27:32
Shauna (she/her)
I mean, they've died and lived multiple times. They're even we're much worse than Buffy. i
00:27:36
Ryan
Yeah, right, right.
00:27:36
Kylan
That's true. yeah Yeah. They go to hell and they come back.
00:27:38
Ryan
Fun fact, I've never seen a single, single episode of Supernatural.
00:27:39
Kylan
and
00:27:42
Shauna (she/her)
i
00:27:42
Ryan
I keep giving it a try. I know, I would.
00:27:44
Shauna (she/her)
I think the five the first, the original Eric Kripke Five Seasons, I think it's well worth it, in my opinion. and Because I don't like the modern, this is like my soapbox, but i don't I cannot stand the modern 10 to 12 episode run for 40 minute shows.
00:27:51
Kylan
It is. it
00:28:02
Shauna (she/her)
But I also think that the 23 episode seasons are, they're cumbersome.
00:28:05
Ryan
You don't need those anymore.
00:28:07
Kylan
Right.
00:28:09
Ryan
We can't do those.
00:28:09
Shauna (she/her)
They're difficult and, you know, I think a 16-17 is like a sweet spot where you still get filler episodes because filler episodes are important.
00:28:14
Ryan
This week's not. Mm-hmm.
00:28:18
Kylan
right
00:28:18
Shauna (she/her)
There you have to establish a status quo in order to make the change of the status quo mean anything but Yeah, so to hack with this 12 episode run give shows more episodes give shows multiple seasons in contracts a future episode is going to be see shows that should have gotten more than one season and Like that is a big Sticking point for me.
00:28:25
Ryan
Great. Yeah. Yes.
00:28:35
Kylan
Yes.
00:28:39
Ryan
Agreed.
00:28:43
Shauna (she/her)
I hate it. But anyways, so very excited for both
00:28:45
Ryan
So, which also dovetails nicely into another reboot.

Casting and Representation in Film

00:28:52
Ryan
We just got our first teaser trailer launch for Fantastic Four.
00:28:58
Kylan
Yes.
00:28:58
Ryan
Kylen, first thoughts?
00:28:59
Kylan
Yes. Okay, here I have thoughts on this and here's why. So i know so you're talking, to now i've been I've been reading Marvel Comics for over 50 years.
00:29:04
Ryan
Okay.
00:29:11
Kylan
Fantastic Four was the first comic that I actually had a subscription to, okay?
00:29:18
Shauna (she/her)
Okay.
00:29:18
Kylan
Back way back when that was a thing. And I've always now, as i got as I've gotten older, okay, so two things. As I've gotten older and as I got into pulp fiction,
00:29:30
Kylan
My feeling was that the Fantastic Four are science heroes who happen to have superpowers.
00:29:39
Ryan
the Love that.
00:29:40
Kylan
so but and nobody And nobody's really, the the honestly, the closest that they've come to that, if you can find it, is the ah the the the movie that was done, oh gosh, can't think of his name, or the one from back in the 90s that, next yeah, we it which Mighty Marvel Geeks,
00:29:54
Ryan
Yeah, I was gonna say the 90s one. Never seen it.
00:30:00
Kylan
I did interview the entire cast, probably one of our favorite episodes, so if you ever want if you want to look for if you'll want to look for an episode, that's a great stand-alone.
00:30:06
Shauna (she/her)
That's cool.
00:30:09
Kylan
It's that one.
00:30:09
Ryan
Hell yeah. Okay.
00:30:10
Kylan
All right, so, Corman, Roger Corman, that guy.
00:30:11
Ryan
Noted.
00:30:13
Kylan
All right, so that that being said, watching this trailer, I feel like that that's what's happened.
00:30:13
Ryan
Okay.
00:30:13
Shauna (she/her)
you
00:30:19
Kylan
Number one, they got the feel that they're a family. Number two, I get the feeling that we're seeing that these are scientists.
00:30:22
Ryan
Yeah.
00:30:27
Kylan
These are people who Operate with next-level technology. I mean that it the Baxter building looks like a Jetson type of Place right so I'm so excited for this and we got Herbie Herbie now.
00:30:39
Ryan
yeah
00:30:46
Ryan
hey
00:30:46
Kylan
I will take here's the thing about Herbie back mid to late 70s the fantastic four had a cartoon on CBS and But there was some kind of licensing issue, yet again, with the Human Torch.
00:31:02
Kylan
Because the Human Torch was actually an old Marvel character that they reworked so that Johnny Storm...
00:31:07
Ryan
That's like Chris Evans.
00:31:11
Kylan
Yeah, so yeah so he was like so the original Human Torch was this robot that was around the same time as Captain America, but then they they brought him back as Johnny Storm.
00:31:21
Ryan
so I'll connect to the vision, too.
00:31:25
Kylan
Sort of and I think Yeah, that's something there There was there was something I have to go back because they're like the they they play flat fast and loose when it comes to vision and No his but so um Yes Okay, so Herbie was brought in to replace Johnny so the Fantastic Four for the longest time were
00:31:26
Ryan
Like his his body was... john was the Human Torch?
00:31:40
Ryan
Right. Yep, ooh! Sorry, I'm interrupting your flow. Continue.
00:31:53
Kylan
a thing as Sue and Reed and then Herbie. Now, when I was a kid, I didn't like Herbie because I wanted Johnny, but the cartoon had Herbie.
00:32:02
Ryan
person. yeah
00:32:04
Kylan
And I have to admit, as I got older, Herbie grew on me. So when I saw him in that trailer, nine-year-old Kylan was like, ah so yeah. So I'm happy.
00:32:15
Kylan
I'm jazzed. I might put this on my on my countdown app. ah
00:32:20
Ryan
i twenty fifth Yeah.
00:32:20
Kylan
Uh, I mean, there's no mic too. I'm gonna do it. So yeah.
00:32:25
Shauna (she/her)
What?
00:32:27
Ryan
Go ahead, John. i's Sorry.
00:32:28
Shauna (she/her)
Oh, I really liked how it really felt like they get it in a way that the previous two movie franchise iterations, they seem to just kind of miss the mark.
00:32:39
Kylan
Mm-hmm.
00:32:40
Shauna (she/her)
Like I really, I felt the way, like both the, the sweet kind thing with where it was like, also I just like that bit of an attitude with, and help, there are, gosh, I called them helper because I, they made me so think of the venture brothers and obviously helper and Herbie are,
00:32:47
Ryan
Mm hmm.
00:32:53
Kylan
Mhm.
00:32:56
Shauna (she/her)
analogues to each other and being and you know that kind of retro futurism this that they both have and so
00:33:04
Kylan
Yes, yes.
00:33:04
Ryan
I'm excited for that aesthetic specifically.
00:33:07
Shauna (she/her)
Absolutely. But I loved the when Sue was talking about how, you know, well, you know, Ben's always been our rock. And like, I'm like, ah, because of course, like, I i really love the connection between a the classical elements and then also the connection between embodying them as people.
00:33:17
Kylan
Mhm.
00:33:26
Kylan
you know
00:33:26
Shauna (she/her)
that, you know, Ben is the rock, Johnny is the hothead, sues the woman so naturally she's invisible, while Reed is overextended everywhere because of all of his many obligations, and is just a little too busy to notice and about any of it as much as he should.
00:33:40
Kylan
Yes. and And that was something that was in the Corman series, in and in the Corman movie.
00:33:47
Shauna (she/her)
Sure.
00:33:47
Kylan
and And nobody picked that up anywhere else. And I was like, that was something that, okay, get true, it's corny. they and They held off all their effects for the one time Johnny turns into a human torch.
00:34:00
Shauna (she/her)
You ready?
00:34:00
Kylan
Yeah, but I will say that was like a um a level of insight into those characters that I was like that totally made sense to me and it kind of personalized those characters for me because all of a sudden I'm like well you know all these were just random things like oh no he becomes no
00:34:19
Ryan
how random yeah
00:34:21
Kylan
Yeah, all random, but no, it's not. It's ah almost it also like, okay, we know this is supposed to be some cosmic event, but what does that mean? All of a sudden, cosmic is on two levels now.
00:34:34
Kylan
So that's all I gotta say about that.
00:34:35
Ryan
Cosmic in... Yeah, no, I never really thought about that. Like, cosmic in terms of, like, the fate of it all. Like, we talk about, you know, cosmic events from, like, you know, the the astrological part of it, but when we talk about the cosmos, we're talking about the heavens.
00:34:50
Ryan
We're talking about fate itself.
00:34:53
Kylan
Yes.
00:34:53
Ryan
That is fascinating. I never really put that together, nor did I put together the four elements. And I have to tell you, I just looked at the poster for ah the this then unreleased Fantastic Four movie from 1994, and the like subtitle, the words on it, um part muscle, part elastic, part fire, part invisible, together it's clobberin' time. Who wrote that? Who wrote that? Let me beat their ass.
00:35:26
Ryan
like
00:35:27
Kylan
I think he's dead, I think he's dead, so.
00:35:29
Ryan
He does honestly, for writing that, those four sentences, good. I'm glad, no, I'm kidding.
00:35:35
Kylan
ah You know what?
00:35:36
Ryan
I, you know, R.I.P., I guess, but that sucked.
00:35:37
Kylan
did yeah you You should go, if you think that's bad, you should go and see if you can find the Captain America movie from, I think it had him in 1990, 1991.
00:35:39
Ryan
That's so bad. No wonder they didn't release it. Anybody that's not, I'd be like, that doesn't make any fucking sense, guy.
00:35:55
Kylan
Yeah, if you thought that was bad, that got better.
00:35:57
Ryan
With with white Johnny store or with white Nick Fury, is that the one?
00:36:01
Kylan
No, that was a separate move. Now you're talking about the one with, that was Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.
00:36:06
Ryan
What's his name?
00:36:08
Kylan
with Hasselhoff. That was the Marvel or Fox Marvels attempt at a Nick Fury TV series, which I was low-key hoping for because I'm a huge Nick Fury fan.
00:36:10
Ryan
Hasselhoff, yes, yes.
00:36:17
Ryan
Right.
00:36:17
Shauna (she/her)
but
00:36:20
Ryan
Yeah.
00:36:21
Kylan
But all I got was that movie.
00:36:22
Shauna (she/her)
Obviously, Lightning Fury's gone in forever, and but like but with that being said, Hasselhoff is a good choice for back then.
00:36:30
Ryan
oh
00:36:31
Kylan
Yes.
00:36:31
Ryan
um Yeah, yeah, don't hassle Nick Fury.
00:36:33
Kylan
Yeah, yeah when when we got, yeah, that's, and what you know, he had, he had thoughts when, um when Sam Jackson got the role, but I'm like, okay, dude, whatever.
00:36:42
Ryan
Oh, no, I don't want to hear what David Hasselhoff's thought are on race.
00:36:43
Kylan
ah Go back to the beat, it's all good.
00:36:46
Shauna (she/her)
Unfortunately, like like ultimate the Ultimates exists, and they're like, oh, this is good.
00:36:46
Ryan
ah
00:36:49
Kylan
yeah Yes.
00:36:51
Ryan
Yeah, yeah, the ultimates exist, the ultimates always exist.
00:36:54
Kylan
yes
00:36:55
Ryan
um The other one that I really want to find that I feel like some nerd out there, if you're listening, Create a online repository for all of the defunct Marvel things that exist because I need to see the Generation X movie with what's her name as Emma Frost.
00:37:17
Kylan
Yes.
00:37:18
Ryan
I need to see it.
00:37:20
Kylan
i I saw that.
00:37:20
Ryan
whoop What is her name?
00:37:21
Kylan
I saw that too. I remember it. um it Yeah, and i actually I had it on VHS somewhere.
00:37:30
Ryan
Oh my god.
00:37:30
Kylan
I did, but you know what? And that probably is in my basement somewhere, but it's it's VHS, so it's probably not even playing.
00:37:34
Ryan
it's
00:37:37
Ryan
Yeah, exactly.
00:37:38
Kylan
But yeah.
00:37:39
Ryan
She's played by Fanola Hughes, who plays um ah the mom on Charmed. So Fanola Hughes, also, real icon girl.
00:37:47
Kylan
That's right.
00:37:50
Ryan
um So last sort of, you know, nerdy tie-in. There's a ah potential, and this is just something that we were having good dialogue about, and it felt like something to talk about on the podcast, which was,
00:38:06
Ryan
The actress, Hunter Shafer, um who is a trans woman, is allegedly being talked about from Euphoria.
00:38:14
Shauna (she/her)
Ephoria, yeah.
00:38:18
Ryan
She's allegedly being ah talked about as a potential actress to play Mystique. And first glance, it's like, that's cool.
00:38:24
Kylan
Okay.
00:38:28
Ryan
That's kind of interesting. But then, you know, Sean and I were kind of like, digging down into the other sort of like commentary of it. So like, do you wanna share kind of where we were going with Echana?
00:38:40
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah, and so on one hand, I'm like, I think she would crush it. I think that is a really great choice in a lot of ways.
00:38:45
Ryan
you
00:38:47
Shauna (she/her)
But also, a actually you know such a trope about trans women is that we are deceiving others via our appearance. And that's kind of Mystique's whole thing.
00:39:00
Ryan
It really is.
00:39:00
Shauna (she/her)
And I think, you know, there's a lot of subtext there and a lot of weight to, oh, this person who can play, you know, who is going to be multiple genders played by a trans woman. As I think that it leads to a certain, like I said, deception, it leads to that in authenticity to who we are that we are not really that we are and I just I do wonder I think that commentary is going to exist if this does get happen and maybe you know at the end of the day though it's so hard for trans actors to find roles because there are a lot of great ones and it is not like and those roles are drying up and I think you're seeing that especially as so many studios are pulling things with any amount of diversity
00:39:30
Ryan
Yeah.
00:39:35
Kylan
Right.
00:39:40
Kylan
Yes.
00:39:40
Ryan
Yeah.
00:39:43
Ryan
Great.
00:39:44
Kylan
Mm-hmm.
00:39:46
Shauna (she/her)
So if she does get cast, like I'm not going to be like, how dare they? Because at the end of the day, you know what, she's getting work and that's better than nothing.
00:39:51
Ryan
Right, right. You love that.
00:39:57
Shauna (she/her)
But I can't help but ignore some of the other background to it. And I think that there's some real unintentional commentary.
00:40:03
Ryan
We have to get ahead of the conversation. Yes, we have to get ahead of the conversation before the transphobic piece of shit like fundamentalist
00:40:13
Kylan
Mm hmm.
00:40:15
Ryan
like toxic gatekeeping nerds get a hold of it because they will lead into those same comments but use them as like explicit insults or like use it to you know denigrate trans people and trans women specifically.
00:40:16
Kylan
Yes.
00:40:33
Ryan
And then you know part of that other side of like the coin is like the so much of the ire and hatred towards the trans community is that trans people have reminded everyone that like it's all fucking made up and you can actually do whatever you want as long as it makes you happy and that includes anything from how you identify your gender to how you express said gender to how you love another person of whatever gender and trans people are a reminder that like
00:40:56
Kylan
Right. Right.
00:41:11
Ryan
true self-love is actually figuring out which parts of you know the made-up bullshit you want to hold on to and which parts you want to say this is not for me and I don't care and there's also something about Mystique who can literally be you know depending like which medium whatever she wants whoever she wants you know like
00:41:35
Kylan
Right.
00:41:37
Ryan
Kyle and, you know, just in general are X-Men obviously big fan, but um is that like resonating in any way? Like, you know, what what's that?
00:41:46
Kylan
No, it it totally is. And you actually, you you laid that out in a way that I i had never considered it. Because like for me like for me, I was coming at it from you know if ah if a trans if a trans actress
00:41:56
Ryan
sure
00:42:04
Kylan
actor is the best know best one for that role.
00:42:08
Ryan
Yeah.
00:42:09
Kylan
I'm all for that. But at the same time, I never thought, considered it in that context. Because Mystique has no know posed as a senator.
00:42:22
Kylan
Oh, God. What's the guy's name? The one that...
00:42:24
Ryan
all you right
00:42:25
Kylan
Yeah. yeah So he was like, Senator Kelly, one minute. And then next minute, they're the white queen. you know so And nobody nobody says boo, nobody said raises a stink about that, right? And I agree that you know it's important to get ahead of that. um because you know the The thing is, and I'm all for, I am all about, I want to see as much representation as possible. one And I'm a huge action fan. like i love
00:42:58
Kylan
action movies okay one of my favorites from the last several years is the 355 um exactly see it was this movie it was a movie with jessicacha star Jessica Chastain and there's about four of the women and I'm terrible with names but and so and now here this is but this has a true historical connection because the um during the revolutionary war
00:42:59
Ryan
Yeah. Never heard of it.
00:43:18
Ryan
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember this.
00:43:28
Kylan
ah There was a a spy ring called the Culper Ring that operated one of the so ah the one of the people that provided information directly from the to the the British intelligence officer was a slave that was a part of this ring.
00:43:46
Kylan
Nobody knew her name. she was just found Her code in the book was Agent 355.
00:43:53
Ryan
oh
00:43:54
Kylan
So that's the reason why this movie so like this movie they chose that as their name.
00:43:58
Shauna (she/her)
with... Sorry.
00:44:00
Kylan
the That was the 355.
00:44:00
Ryan
Very cool.
00:44:02
Kylan
Yeah, so I would love to see, I would love to see an all-trans mercenary unit. I would be there for that.
00:44:09
Ryan
Hell yeah. We just need like a translate action star.
00:44:11
Kylan
I'm serious, like, I want...
00:44:15
Ryan
Like that's, if this is what gives us our translate, our our and a trans representation as a bad bitch, like my biggest concern is please do not water down Mystique.
00:44:16
Kylan
Yeah.
00:44:22
Kylan
Yeah. Yes.
00:44:27
Ryan
Like,
00:44:28
Kylan
No.
00:44:29
Ryan
Rebecca Romaine did not slide on her bear pussy on the ground. For people to act like Mystique isn't that girl.
00:44:37
Kylan
I gotta go back and watch that.
00:44:40
Ryan
Yup.
00:44:41
Kylan
ah but and and that That's true.
00:44:41
Ryan
Slides on it.
00:44:44
Kylan
like you know we need a We need to see that trans actors can do anything. They can do action.
00:44:54
Kylan
They they they they don't just have to do drama.
00:44:54
Ryan
Right, it's the whole point.
00:44:56
Kylan
or what you know Throw a fucking grenade!
00:44:58
Ryan
They don't have to just be a victim.
00:45:00
Shauna (she/her)
I mean, well, and I think there's something to that too.
00:45:01
Kylan
You can't find a face! Yes.
00:45:03
Shauna (she/her)
they don't have to just play trans characters.
00:45:06
Kylan
No, they don't.
00:45:06
Ryan
Right.
00:45:07
Shauna (she/her)
And I think that is really where, when was the last time you've seen a trans actor play a character that is, yeah, that is not explicitly, that is not explicitly canonically trans, that is just a woman, you know, and at the end of the day, because it doesn't matter whether she's cis or trans, she just is.
00:45:07
Kylan
No, they don't.
00:45:13
Ryan
Sis person.
00:45:17
Ryan
Right.
00:45:20
Kylan
Exactly.
00:45:20
Ryan
Right. Right.
00:45:26
Kylan
Exactly.
00:45:27
Shauna (she/her)
And I think that is the future that we need more of.
00:45:29
Kylan
we We do.
00:45:30
Shauna (she/her)
And that's what's going on there that you're saying.
00:45:30
Ryan
Interestingly, yeah.
00:45:30
Kylan
Bring that on. Bring that on. because you I will be there watching all the grenades being thrown and all the ninja kicks being made. I will be there for it.
00:45:38
Ryan
Right. Because the girls are going to girl.
00:45:39
Kylan
I'm just saying. Yes, they are.
00:45:42
Ryan
Like, please be real. You want to see a hair flip? Please. Pa Lee's. Which also reminded me. Michaela Joel?
00:45:53
Ryan
the um Or, Rodriguez. um MJ Rodriguez.
00:45:58
Shauna (she/her)
Ooh.
00:45:59
Ryan
from Pose and many other things um is on the show LÜT, and they have never once addressed her being trans, like the character being trans, so I am assuming she assists.
00:46:10
Shauna (she/her)
Okay.
00:46:11
Kylan
Mm hmm.
00:46:13
Ryan
Like, they have made comments suggesting that she assists, like I can't remember, but there was something that they said that was like, like ah you know, getting a period or something. Like, I don't know if that's what it was, but like, something that suggested that this character is cis, and I'm obsessed with that because I also never really clocked.
00:46:29
Kylan
Yeah.
00:46:33
Kylan
Mm
00:46:34
Ryan
I thought, like, I wonder if this character is trans, but at the same time, it's like, that's kind of what we should always do, because that is what cis privilege is, is we just assume everyone is cisgender, and
00:46:37
Kylan
hmm.
00:46:42
Kylan
Right. Yes.
00:46:49
Ryan
to just, it's kind of like my whole thing is now I'm just assuming everyone is gay until proven otherwise. Like, we can also assume it's trans until proven otherwise. Like, if people are so invested in, you know, anyways, okay.
00:46:57
Kylan
Right, right.
00:47:02
Ryan
The other thing that we just have to throw out there because we're talking about transness is fuck the NCAA for yielding to the executive order, keeping specifically trans women
00:47:14
Kylan
Yeah.
00:47:14
Ryan
out of k K through collegiate sports get a fucking job you losers fuck the NCAA cowards
00:47:17
Kylan
Yeah.
00:47:21
Kylan
Yeah, i I just, I saw that, I saw that this afternoon and I'm just like, and actually i say i looked at I looked at my wife and I'm like, why is it that this is specifically women's sports?
00:47:36
Kylan
Why why is that? And then that that was a whole separate discussion. and I don't understand it.
00:47:40
Ryan
right
00:47:42
Shauna (she/her)
Well, because women are weak and bad at sports, obviously, that is the only, but that is, and that's just, it is, that is the actual assumption that so many Republicans make because there was actually a study that was done that showed that the people most likely it's to have negative feelings about trans women in women's athletics also have generally negative attitudes towards women athletes and are more likely to think that they should be look and act a certain way.
00:47:42
Kylan
I don't. it
00:47:46
Ryan
Right.
00:48:10
Ryan
Yeah, there's and there's something about like
00:48:11
Kylan
It's up to the end.
00:48:17
Ryan
the the it in the same vein that you know women need to be protected from something externally and like that relies on the idea that one trans people are predatory and two that like they're somehow going to be this massive disadvantage but the other part of it all is like that's your only focus because, to your point, women are to be protected, they are weak, and if we can target an enemy, ah christ sorry to to the point you you know,
00:48:50
Shauna (she/her)
That's not my point. Let's just... mr Point of order. exactly
00:49:00
Kylan
yeah oh
00:49:02
Ryan
before real hot nerd shit is a misogynistic
00:49:04
Shauna (she/her)
That they it canceled on International Women in Sports Day. Great.
00:49:09
Kylan
And I will tell you, i so um' i so I'm a martial artist and I have two have two stories that one from when I was in college and this and one from i let's call it maybe 10 years ago now.
00:49:09
Shauna (she/her)
Love that.
00:49:11
Ryan
Yes. Oh, sick.
00:49:24
Kylan
So when I was in college, we had started um a mar a karate club. And so I was actually one of the people to kind of help teach and run the run the club.
00:49:37
Kylan
And so we were going over like the techniques, like, you know, you've seen the like a semi-graptial wrist, how to break the hold, right?
00:49:44
Ryan
Yeah.
00:49:45
Kylan
So umm so I'm paired up with ah but this this woman that's say she's she's ah a, aerobics instructor. She actually was part of, she actually helped teach one of the aerobics classes on campus, right? So I'm like, okay, I'm gonna be nice to her. I don't wanna try to rip her arm off. So I try to, the first one, and I'm like, oh, okay, so I get it. She's trying to, and I'm like, okay, so then I kind of ramp it up a little more, and I stuck, vice grip. And then, I think it took me like maybe four or five times to finally break that hold. That was, and so she was,
00:50:24
Kylan
No, she's this tiny little, now I'm not saying I was big and muscular, but I was kinda, you know, kinda swell. So I was like, okay, that was a wake-up call for a 21-year-old Kylan.
00:50:36
Kylan
Now, if we fast-forward several years ah to like the mid, I don't know, 2013, 2014, my wife had given me quite a gift.
00:50:37
Ryan
Yeah.
00:50:47
Kylan
She gave me 10 Krav Maga courses.
00:50:49
Ryan
Of course.
00:50:51
Kylan
All right, so, so I'm, So we did this thing that was called ah basically where we would square up with our other person. And the idea was for us to, for me to try and touch the other person's shoulder and for them trying to touch my shoulder. And you know, we would have to bob weave, block or whatever. And so I was paired up with the instructor's mother. Okay. So this woman, I would say she had to be in her mid maybe late sixties, but she's surprised, right? So we're, we're, we're squaring up. We're going around.
00:51:23
Kylan
and she tries to get me, and I come around, and as I come around, I legit clocked her in the jaw, right?
00:51:33
Kylan
And I didn't mean to, but I was like, pow!
00:51:35
Ryan
other in the draw.
00:51:36
Kylan
And I'm like, I said, I'm so sorry. And this woman looked me dead in the eye, and she goes, I shit you not. There's no apologies of Krav Maga.
00:51:48
Kylan
Froze my shit. Like, I just thought this woman is about to fuck me up. I'm gonna walk out of here looking like Daniel when he first met the Cobra Kai and guys asked me.
00:51:59
Kylan
I didn't. I didn't, but I tell you what, that's the first and last time I clocked that old woman.
00:52:01
Ryan
You're like, me
00:52:03
Shauna (she/her)
Thank you.
00:52:03
Ryan
I mean, 68-year-old? No.
00:52:05
Kylan
right I'm just, and so, you know, and all of that to say, you know, you can say that you you make assumptions, but you know ah you know what happens when you assume and
00:52:06
Shauna (she/her)
Oh my god.
00:52:11
Ryan
Don't make assumptions.
00:52:14
Ryan
Mm-hmm. You get your ass beat.
00:52:17
Shauna (she/her)
You have a good chance of being wrong.
00:52:18
Kylan
Yes, yes, so.
00:52:19
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah. You know what happens when you assume a 68-year-old woman looks at you and says, there's no apologies and crap on bra? Like, no one wants that.
00:52:26
Kylan
Yeah, I'm just saying. Nobody once said like, kind kind I'm like the dead woman with a beat me and I wouldn't be able to say shit about it, just saying.
00:52:36
Ryan
Yep. Yeah.
00:52:37
Kylan
So, you know, I, and that's all, all that stuff that's coming out of DC, that's all about control and bullshit anyways, so.
00:52:40
Ryan
yeah
00:52:45
Ryan
Yeah, of course. Well, and just dehumanizing as many of us as possible when they start rounding us up.
00:52:47
Kylan
And hey,
00:52:49
Shauna (she/her)
in their tactics and overwhelm.
00:52:52
Kylan
It's
00:52:53
Ryan
It's pretty straightforward. It's pretty straightforward. So a brief hiatus from the the

Kevin Smith Movies Rewatch Plan

00:52:58
Ryan
woes of the world. ah When we started talking about sort of like the next thing that we wanted to do,
00:53:04
Ryan
I just I really wanted to rewatch the Kevin Smith movies. Sean and I have been talking about it for a minute. And like, you know, so I frankly, I just really can't wait to get to Mallrats and J and Silent Bob. But so but we had to start proper. We had to start with Clerks. And go ahead. jo where youre say
00:53:22
Shauna (she/her)
Oh and like well because I this past year saw the really amazing documentary which I can't recommend enough called chasing chasing Amy and it is so good in such a sweet love letter and if you like Kevin Smith at all you will love him after this because that man is a sweetheart took this young director under his wing and helped guide him in a really like wonderful mentorship way that was just very heartwarming.
00:53:50
Shauna (she/her)
and i like And it's such a good story and look at like the gender politics and the sexual sexuality politics of the time period and then it's like impact.
00:53:55
Ryan
Yeah.
00:53:56
Kylan
Yes,
00:54:00
Shauna (she/her)
I cannot recommend it often. So I'm looking forward to talking about Chasing Amy as well. So I have to like, that's my, I think that was what really got me into Kevin Smith in this year, 2024 of 25.
00:54:04
Ryan
Yes. um that i uneen Yeah. So you're a big Kevin Smith fan.
00:54:13
Kylan
me Yeah, yeah, yeah, um so.
00:54:13
Ryan
Kylan, sorry.
00:54:17
Kylan
it know So the thing was, like i when Clerks first came out, it was sort of on my radar, but i I didn't get to see it until I met my wife, and she was really into it. Now, when she and I first met, we had talked about we we talked about how much we loved Kevin Smith, and we we wanted we came up with this whole, what would be the nerdiest road trip that you could do.
00:54:46
Kylan
part of that part of road trip would be going to Red Bank, New Jersey to go to J and Solid Bob Secret Stash, right? So, ah several years later, after bills were paid off and we were in a much better financial place, we decided to finally do this road trip. ah So, we we we get to Red Bank, New Jersey, and we get to, and there's J and Solid Bob Secret Stash, so we're just so excited.
00:55:15
Kylan
and we get there but there's this line so we got there before they open so it was fine maybe about five or ten minutes so we're standing there in line and this guy comes out he says oh we're filming comic book men today he said would you want to be on an episode we're like yeah and i was wearing my t-shirt from um mighty marvel geeks and so no yeah mighty marvel geek so he said well you can't wear that t-shirt so i had to flip it which is fine and so we were like if yeah If you can find ah comic book men somewhere, um I think it maybe it has to be, I believe it's in first season, maybe second season, she and I are in the back going through comics while this woman was trying to ah get get a price on a stack of comics that she had a gotten from a relative. So after we did that, the church that's in dogma,
00:56:13
Shauna (she/her)
Mm.
00:56:14
Kylan
at the end of Dogma was down the street.
00:56:15
Ryan
Yeah.
00:56:16
Kylan
So we so we we went to this art arcade and hung out the arcade, then we went by the church just so we could see the church and everything. and and what It was awesome, man. like it was kind It was kind of cool because I don't think we made it by the store.
00:56:33
Kylan
I don't i think the store was gone by that point.
00:56:36
Ryan
The convenience store.
00:56:36
Kylan
I don't know. Yeah, the convenience store. I don't remember going by that. But yeah, so she and I, uh watched we we will we watched all of the movies we watched uh the the clerk's cartoon um yes it is it is that and i think we even got some of the clerk's comics oh and um what was that one movie that was the first appearance of jay uh the first appearance of silent bob it was before clerks um
00:56:53
Shauna (she/her)
underrated and has some funny moments. i
00:57:08
Shauna (she/her)
Oh, why am I?
00:57:11
Kylan
It was a black and white movie. And like all you see is Silent Bob at a party, smoking a cigarette, and then walks off. And he's like, Kevin Smith is there for over five seconds.
00:57:24
Kylan
And um that was like the first recorded appearance of Silent Bob. we We even found that movie. And I forget the name of it. I can't think of the name of it.
00:57:33
Ryan
Is it drawing files?
00:57:35
Kylan
Maybe? drawn flies
00:57:37
Ryan
I'm looking, I'm drawing, drawing flies, yes.
00:57:40
Kylan
Yes, that was it, drawing flies. Yes, that was it.
00:57:42
Ryan
Okay, got it.
00:57:43
Kylan
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:57:44
Ryan
He's credited as Silent Bob in the film. Jason Muse also appears, but as a different character.
00:57:49
Kylan
Yeah.
00:57:49
Ryan
Smith's character was the same leather outfit he wears in Lawrats.
00:57:53
Kylan
Yep, yeah.
00:57:53
Shauna (she/her)
Mm.
00:57:55
Kylan
So yeah, so so it was it's cool because like whenever, especially like whenever there was a new, a new movie We're like, it is there was no i never we there was no convincing like, could you watch this with me?
00:58:10
Kylan
No, it's like, no, we're watching it. So no, therere we're we're big ah Kevin Smith fans in the house.
00:58:12
Ryan
and
00:58:16
Kylan
Although I will say I have yet to watch the Kevin Smith voiceover of Buckaroo Banzai. He did do a special recording of Buckaroo Banzai where he does a a commentary.
00:58:30
Kylan
And I want to watch it just because he he has he's a big fan of this of the movie like me. Probably bigger, you but yeah, so.
00:58:36
Ryan
Yeah.
00:58:38
Ryan
That's why. So, I mean, I i don't even remember. Mall Rex was my first Kevin Smith movie and probably the one that I have, you know, the deep most like the deepest
00:58:44
Kylan
Okay.
00:58:49
Ryan
ah like original connection to.
00:58:52
Kylan
Mm-hmm.
00:58:53
Ryan
Jay and Silent Bob was the movie that I was like, this is perfection. Like this is so fucking funny, everything about it. And I really didn't even know about the, probably like the connection other than just the name.
00:59:04
Kylan
Right.
00:59:04
Ryan
um And so, you know, I went out of my way to see Clerks and I had seen Dogma. Actually, I don't know that I've seen Dogma all the way through because I feel like it was one of those movies that was just always on Comedy Central.
00:59:15
Ryan
And so I've seen most of it, but I don't, I'm pretty sure I've seen all of it. Um, but yeah, my sister like bought mall rats because she was basically a mall rat. Um, and, uh, it's also wild to think that there's an entire generation that just doesn't know what a mall rat is.
00:59:32
Kylan
yeah oh
00:59:32
Ryan
Uh, yeah, yeah, because no one goes to malls anymore.
00:59:33
Kylan
Don't tell me that, that you're right. No. no
00:59:38
Ryan
Um, but yeah, Shona, what's your, what's your origin story with Kevin Smith?
00:59:42
Shauna (she/her)
So I've been a big fan of Kevin Smith since high school. You know, I grew, I hung around at my local comic book shop and it was all very steeped in the mall rats, clerks, and chasing Amy, which had a lot of personal applicability to me in high school, especially.
01:00:01
Shauna (she/her)
as, and I'll get into this more in the Chasing Amy episode, but as my situation, you know, on appearance really seemed to mirror that story in so many ways.
01:00:12
Shauna (she/her)
And so it was very like, oh my gosh, this like really nerdy, you know, I love the dialogue, you know, the banter, like I've always loved a good banter. And I think that's what ultimately led me to Joss Whedon in that same kind of way.
01:00:25
Ryan
Yeah.
01:00:26
Shauna (she/her)
And there's I just have had such a love and appreciation for these movies. They're just all time favorites of mine. Like I watching them, realizing just how much is still so quotable.
01:00:40
Shauna (she/her)
There's still so much the music in these movies is there are just, you know, movie movie nerd made these movies in such a love lettery way.
01:00:47
Ryan
Yes.
01:00:47
Kylan
Mhmm. Mhmm.
01:00:51
Shauna (she/her)
And you can just so tell the kind of care and concern, the passion that really shows through in them that I think is why even in their rough spots, they still hold up in the grand scheme still so well.
01:01:06
Kylan
Yes.
01:01:06
Ryan
Yeah, it's, it's so like, I don't remember who I was talking to, but they're a nerd and they like didn't know who Kevin Smith was. And I was like, it's, or like, you know, they knew the name, but they didn't know sort of like the relevance of it. And I just, it's so, it's so meta. And that's the thing that I think I like about his movies is ah it's also commentary on like, ner it's moat you know, it's largely commentary on like nerd culture.
01:01:33
Kylan
We can.
01:01:34
Ryan
um in a lot of ways, and it's also got, you know, sort of the social lens to it. So, you know, we'll talk about the ah the sluts shaming around ah Dante's girlfriend sucking 37 dicks and like how it was very much so like who fucking cares it's you don't get to be a you don't get to be a hypocrite about how many people I have sex with because you've also had sex with a number of people that I don't like so anyways we'll we'll we'll dive into that to all of that in a second but um yeah I'm also very happy to know that like he hasn't
01:01:45
Shauna (she/her)
I will.
01:02:12
Ryan
Kevin Smith hasn't eventually just turned out to be an asshole, like one of the only ones we can still just, thank goodness, Kevin Smith, don't fuck up, please.
01:02:20
Kylan
Yes, yes, no Yeah, yeah, I Mean, you know I I tell you Kevin so I like Kevin Smith like I let's see at one point he wrote for
01:02:22
Ryan
We've lost literally so, we've lost so much, we've lost so many, and you can be our white savior.
01:02:23
Shauna (she/her)
Can't see all of that.
01:02:45
Kylan
Green Arrow, ah the comic.
01:02:46
Ryan
You.
01:02:47
Kylan
And I loved, because Green Arrow is this really left-linging billionaire, right? And yeah and you can see Kevin's politics all through that all through that run.
01:03:01
Kylan
And then I'll be honest with you, once Kevin stopped stop writing, I stopped reading it. But then...
01:03:06
Shauna (she/her)
I have the exact same experience with Green Arrow. I also read the Kevin Smith run and then stopped.
01:03:11
Kylan
Yeah, now it's Kevin.
01:03:11
Shauna (she/her)
But I have of an appreciation for a Green Arrow that led me to the CW Arrowverse and because of the Kevin Smith.
01:03:16
Kylan
Yes.
01:03:16
Ryan
Yeah.
01:03:18
Shauna (she/her)
And honestly, it's why I love the character Daredevil because his Guardian Angel comic book, really like that, broughtt that
01:03:25
Kylan
Yes.
01:03:26
Shauna (she/her)
story really spoke to high school me and so that was where like the Kevin Smithness of it all really spoke to me personally. That is like one of my favorite Daredevil stories.
01:03:37
Kylan
yeah and I'm a hardcore Daredevil fan.
01:03:40
Shauna (she/her)
Same.
01:03:40
Kylan
and to see And the way he handled Daredevil, I was just like, there was never a question. I was on board for it. And plus, you know what? and Was it Jay and Silent Bob Strike back?
01:03:50
Kylan
You you get what a a Daredevil movie would look like for all like, you know, five seconds. And I had so much hope. And then Ben Knapp like happened.
01:04:01
Kylan
And I'm not gonna talk about that. I got feelings.
01:04:03
Shauna (she/her)
Look, and it's why I was like, I was, I, I still have a bit of a soft spot for that movie is because of Ben Affleck's Kevin Smith connection.
01:04:12
Kylan
yes
01:04:12
Shauna (she/her)
And that Ben Affleck is a nerd himself who genuinely liked and appreciated Daredevil.
01:04:12
Ryan
Yeah.
01:04:17
Kylan
yes yes no no it is poorly written but you know what great choice on um kingpin great choice on kingpin yes
01:04:19
Shauna (she/her)
Like it sucks that his movie sucked, but also, but it wasn't for lack of caring, which, you know what, you could do worse then.
01:04:30
Shauna (she/her)
Michael Mark Duncan was so good. And Vincent D'Onofrio probably is still like is make probably better, but for the moment, like the physically imposing nature of Kingpin, were and the well ah um you're absolutely correct.
01:04:39
Ryan
Solid change in.
01:04:41
Kylan
yes yes so yeah so yeah no because i so yeah we ke i i don't know it's like you said Kevin Smith he's still you you know he he's he he's a good he's just a good person all around he's not good because it's good for money he's not good cause it's good for
01:04:45
Ryan
Yes.
01:04:48
Shauna (she/her)
Perfect, wonderful problem of choice.
01:05:05
Ryan
Right.
01:05:06
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah.
01:05:07
Kylan
npr I think that he's what you one of those few people who operate at that level where what you see is what you get.
01:05:08
Shauna (she/her)
Okay.
01:05:08
Ryan
Right.
01:05:15
Kylan
i mean you you see ah
01:05:16
Ryan
I'm nervous nerd.
01:05:17
Shauna (she/her)
A nerd's nerd.
01:05:18
Kylan
a nerds nerd and the stuff that he does like to help ah Jason because yeah Jason has issues and he's always there for Jason and I'm like you know what how many of us have friends that that we could say that about that whenever if if we were if we got into some shit wherever it is that we have a friend that we know is gonna always be there no matter what
01:05:27
Ryan
Oh boy.
01:05:43
Ryan
couple of those feel like any and the people that know what that feels like know how rare it is to truly be able to be like if I picked up the phone right now there's a list of four people that I could call that also vice versa those four people could call me and I would pick it up and be like alright well it's three o'clock in the morning I guess gotta go figure out what how I'm gonna help this person like one of them trauma um
01:06:05
Kylan
Yes, yes.
01:06:08
Ryan
Yeah, I don't know a lot about the Jason Lee stuff. I think Shawna just kind of blew my wig back and told me that he's a Scientologist recently, so that's kind of a bummer.
01:06:16
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah, skateboarding Scientologist, but you know, but also is very charismatic and is very good at his like, like his characters of like Brody.
01:06:19
Ryan
A lot of Scientologists are.
01:06:19
Kylan
no
01:06:22
Kylan
Yes.
01:06:27
Kylan
I love Brody.
01:06:27
Shauna (she/her)
Well, that's fire.
01:06:28
Kylan
I do love Brody. Yeah.
01:06:30
Shauna (she/her)
Oh my gosh.
01:06:31
Ryan
Is he, is that the Mallrats character?
01:06:32
Shauna (she/her)
That's small rats. Yeah, Brody Bruce.
01:06:33
Kylan
Yeah.
01:06:34
Ryan
Yeah.
01:06:35
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah.
01:06:35
Kylan
yeah No, let's cue the music.
01:06:36
Ryan
So,
01:06:38
Kylan
Matt, Matt, Matt.
01:06:39
Ryan
but Go ahead, sorry.
01:06:40
Kylan
No, you remember the one that says, let's cue the music. he's He ends up like hosting, what, the Tonight Show?
01:06:46
Shauna (she/her)
Mm hmm.
01:06:47
Ryan
the is or Is it, oh yes, yes, yes!
01:06:47
Kylan
Yeah.
01:06:48
Shauna (she/her)
Suzanne.
01:06:49
Ryan
After he hosts the dating game show, right? Yes, I haven't watched it in so long, but that just came flooding back in the at the end.
01:06:56
Shauna (she/her)
Oh, yeah, Suzanne, we were playing off the.
01:07:00
Ryan
Oh my god. So...
01:07:04
Ryan
one of the other things, oh that's sort okay and I'm gonna say this and then after that let's jump into the little plot synopsis and you know we'll we'll talk our way through but in my search for um confirmation of the Buffy reboot of course I had to go see if Allison Hannigan and Nicholas Brendan had posted anything because they both have Instagrams Alison has not, but Nicholas Brennan started posting again, and he's been posting these reels. For those that don't know, Nicholas Brennan played Xander Harris, who, after Buffy has aired and we have all, you know, I'm sure people were critiquing him at the time of airing. For those of us that watched Buffy,
01:07:49
Ryan
as younger people and didn't necessarily see him for what he was, he's a piece of shit. Xander sucks. He is the proxy. He's supposed to be the everyman, but he is the everyman that Joss Whedon sees himself as, which is unfortunately a disgusting human being who thinks that he has a right to, you know, police women's bodies, what they do, blah blah blah, all, you know,
01:08:05
Kylan
Okay.
01:08:12
Ryan
But his best friend's the Slayer, so you know he's gotta be a good guy. No, he's a toxic piece of shit, but um unfortunately, Nicholas Brendan's life post-Buffy never really seemed to get any better and has had a number of issues with like very public ah substance abuse issues where he's you know like high on drugs or drunk and is terrorizing hotel rooms. he host He was trying to really ride on the Buffy fame for a while but was never like getting invited to conventions because he was a monster because probably because of Joss Whedon in some way shape or form but
01:08:52
Ryan
um yeah i did look at his instagram to see and he's been posting these reels of fireside chats and he does not look well uh in the most recent one he has like a huge bruise across his face um and that was like it would have been like over the weekend his voice just he constantly sounds like he's fucked up a little bit so i don't think we're getting zander back uh which is
01:09:14
Shauna (she/her)
oh I mean, is his brother available?
01:09:20
Ryan
with his twin brother.
01:09:21
Kylan
Yeah.
01:09:23
Ryan
ah yeah oh
01:09:24
Shauna (she/her)
How's he doing? Just you know?
01:09:26
Ryan
i have My other hope that I didn't mention for Buffy is, give me fucking Charisma Carpenter. Give me Justice for Cordelia. Yeah, I know technically she died too. Joss Whedon killed every single woman character um outside of ah Buffy and Willow.
01:09:43
Ryan
ah And that makes me hate him even more for it.
01:09:47
Kylan
Yes, she got killed. I forgot. But you know what?
01:09:50
Ryan
Everyone dies.
01:09:50
Kylan
Nobody's ever really dead. You can- You know, buffer yourself.
01:09:52
Ryan
Correct. Buffy herself.
01:09:56
Kylan
And I mean, you know, so she can come back.
01:09:57
Ryan
Right.
01:09:58
Kylan
It's all good.
01:09:59
Ryan
Of course, of course. All right, Shawna, kick us off with the, with the clerks.
01:10:04
Shauna (she/her)
All right, so Clerks stars Dante Hicks, who is your convenience store clerk, eponymously, and looks next to his best friend and, you know, eminent slacker Randall Graves. And the two of them are having quite a day that just, you know, you constantly hear, and again, this movie is so gosh darn quotable, the I'm not even supposed to be here today,
01:10:30
Shauna (she/her)
just like lives in my mind.
01:10:30
Ryan
Yes.
01:10:31
Shauna (she/her)
And like, I always think that every time like something goes wrong.
01:10:35
Ryan
Yeah.
01:10:35
Shauna (she/her)
And I'm just like, I'm not even supposed to be here today is literally.
01:10:37
Ryan
Yeah.
01:10:38
Shauna (she/her)
And so that is.
01:10:39
Ryan
It's the perfect day in a life movie.
01:10:42
Kylan
Yes.
01:10:42
Shauna (she/her)
It is. And I think that, you know, you had, I remember you had mentioned it like, gosh, it's so, you know, just moving from one skit to the next, but it and it is, but also I think that's very, that's okay.
01:10:49
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah.
01:10:52
Shauna (she/her)
And like, it's such an unpolished movie in a like older way, but also in a, like it was his first movie filmed on a shoestring, diet you know, budget, like, and so I think that you really see that in so much of what they do and,
01:10:53
Ryan
Oh yeah, I didn't mean it as like a yes.
01:11:05
Ryan
Yeah.
01:11:11
Shauna (she/her)
I there's a lot that happens and not a lot that happens. And I love all of the ultimate illusions that end up being in the different U.S.
01:11:15
Ryan
Exactly.
01:11:21
Shauna (she/her)
universe movies. Like you get um ah Randall's cousin Walter, who is also in the beginning. when Brody gives his diatribe at the beginning of Mallrats, it's like one time my cousin Walter got this cat stuck up his ass.
01:11:37
Shauna (she/her)
True story. And then he goes on and talks and like with a punchline being Jesus Walter howls them is supposed to get the cat out. My cousin Walter was a weird guy. And it was because and then he died trying to suck his own dick because again, there's a very interesting
01:11:46
Kylan
Yes,
01:11:50
Ryan
I do remember that.
01:11:50
Kylan
yes.
01:11:52
Shauna (she/her)
you know, the way that it treats homosexuality is very interesting, and I'm going to get you more into that later because that's one of the main notes that I have, but I find it it's not negative, you know, it's not like, and usually explicitly.
01:11:55
Ryan
yeah Yes.
01:12:02
Ryan
Never.
01:12:04
Shauna (she/her)
One, I think they're like, even when it is, it's like, right, it is very, it is very much countered in the text.
01:12:13
Kylan
Yes.
01:12:13
Shauna (she/her)
And so, but I get, I have a good point for that, but so, but yeah, this iconic quotes, the music is so 90s-y good, like Alice in Chains, you know, ah, excellent.
01:12:14
Ryan
Yeah.
01:12:25
Ryan
and
01:12:25
Shauna (she/her)
Silver chair.
01:12:26
Ryan
Speaking of quotable, one of the thing one of the things I wrote down, I forgot that there was a quote that I used to use all the time, which is, I'm a disturbance, you're a disturbance!
01:12:37
Ryan
And I forgot that that was from Clerks until I saw it, and I was like, oh my fucking God!
01:12:44
Shauna (she/her)
Oh my gosh, there is a cancer merchant cancer merchant and like there.
01:12:44
Ryan
God, haven't watched it before.
01:12:47
Ryan
Yes, yes, yes!
01:12:49
Shauna (she/her)
Oh my.
01:12:51
Ryan
Um, so, you know, we, we get, uh, Dante, who is off work and was supposed to, like the whole plot hinges on the fact that he was not supposed to be working and then he agrees to work and he's supposed to be able to play a hockey game.
01:12:51
Shauna (she/her)
And just.
01:13:01
Shauna (she/her)
the
01:13:06
Ryan
And he is committed to playing that fucking hockey game because his boss is supposed to come relieve him at 12 o'clock.
01:13:09
Kylan
Yes.
01:13:12
Kylan
Right, right.
01:13:12
Shauna (she/her)
and so And then, of course, they go to the fueller funeral of Julie Dwyer, who is the girl who causes the events of Mallrats to go into motion by doing laps in the YMCA pool until she had an aneurysm.
01:13:25
Kylan
That's right.
01:13:26
Shauna (she/her)
and so And then, you know, you also see Rick Darris, who ah is this just fucked everybody kind of high school douchebag.
01:13:35
Ryan
Yeah, yeah.
01:13:37
Kylan
Yes.
01:13:37
Shauna (she/her)
And he is like, like the story about him and Cody is very important to the plot of Chasing Amy.
01:13:44
Kylan
Mhm.
01:13:45
Shauna (she/her)
And so then you also because like Dante's like brother, I believe is one of the um or Gil Hicks is suitor number three.
01:13:55
Ryan
Yes, no, not Gail Hicks.
01:13:56
Kylan
Yes, yes, yes.
01:13:56
Shauna (she/her)
in Mallrats.
01:13:59
Ryan
Are you talking, isn't it the guy from
01:14:01
Shauna (she/her)
No, it's dan Dante is the character played by Brian O'Halloran and then Brian O'Halloran plays essentially his brother in Mallrats as, you know, because suitor number one gets gone and then the second suitor is played by Brody.
01:14:10
Ryan
Got
01:14:17
Shauna (she/her)
Not to be confused with suitor number two because that sounds like a bathroom term.
01:14:23
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah.
01:14:25
Ryan
But, um, something that we mentioned earlier is the way that it's structured.
01:14:30
Ryan
So it's like structured in this like scene by scene format. It's very sequential. It only follows.
01:14:36
Shauna (she/her)
Captured.
01:14:37
Ryan
Yeah, it's, it's chapter, literally. um And each scene like in and of itself is a moment in time.
01:14:40
Kylan
and Yes.
01:14:46
Ryan
Like you could pull that out and it would just be a standalone sketch in a comedy show and it would still be just as funny. And the first one with Jay and Silent Bob, my notes were just like, God, I fucking love Jay and Silent Bob.
01:15:02
Ryan
i Those are two of my favorite characters in just like movies in general.
01:15:07
Kylan
Yes.
01:15:07
Ryan
um But yes, ah but I have so many quotes that are written down. um
01:15:13
Shauna (she/her)
You want some making fuck berserker?
01:15:16
Ryan
get yeah
01:15:17
Kylan
yeah
01:15:18
Shauna (she/her)
Did you say making fuck?
01:15:20
Ryan
Yeah.
01:15:21
Shauna (she/her)
I just like... oh Just...
01:15:22
Kylan
a yeah so but I had a ah coworker, and he so he he loved the ViewSkew movies as well.
01:15:22
Ryan
I will say, Go ahead, yeah
01:15:26
Shauna (she/her)
yeah
01:15:27
Ryan
yeah.
01:15:35
Kylan
And we used to call ourselves, and his name was Rodney, right? but So he's this big, fairly quiet guy. And we used to call ourselves Kay and Silent Rod.
01:15:46
Kylan
ah god And there'll be times when we'll be standing there, and I'd start going, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, motherfuck, fuck, motherfuck, fuck, motherfuck, 50 bucks, little a man.
01:15:46
Ryan
to
01:15:55
Shauna (she/her)
No, that's not fucked
01:15:58
Ryan
PG to understand Yes, yes, okay, so i One of my like long-term like my best friend that I constantly talk about on this podcast who now Texts me when he hears me talk about him on the podcast um I've invited him to be our guest when we do Jane silent Bob um and I asked him to do it and all he said back in response was nong and then it just like
01:15:59
Kylan
um
01:16:27
Ryan
snoochie-boochins came to my head, which again are words that have not come to my brain in a long time. And so when I was walking my dog earlier, I started on 15 bucks.
01:16:40
Ryan
Little man put that shit in my hand.
01:16:41
Shauna (she/her)
Check in my hand.
01:16:43
Ryan
If that money doesn't show, then you owe me, owe me, owe my jungle low.
01:16:44
Shauna (she/her)
Let me out.
01:16:49
Shauna (she/her)
we
01:16:49
Ryan
But I could not remember the beginning of it. So you doing the fuck, Now I can, oh my God.
01:16:52
Kylan
da
01:16:58
Ryan
Yes. So incredible. So what are some of our favorite scenes from the movie? You know, the relationships, the drama.
01:17:07
Shauna (she/her)
ah
01:17:08
Ryan
It's like such a short plot.
01:17:08
Shauna (she/her)
That's not a contractor. I think that is a great scene that I really feel like so it was so ahead of its time and being like, no, if you're working for the evil empire, you are and complicit in evil empire-ness.
01:17:11
Ryan
The deaths of our contractor. Yes.
01:17:16
Kylan
Mm hmm.
01:17:25
Shauna (she/her)
And I think that you're really seeing that these days.
01:17:28
Ryan
Yeah.
01:17:28
Shauna (she/her)
And I think it's only it was very prescient, very ahead of its time, as well as also thinking that Empire is the better movie, which is time has really stood to prove Kevin Smith right in that point, which I think is also fascinating.
01:17:31
Kylan
Yes, yes,
01:17:42
Kylan
Yes, yes.
01:17:44
Shauna (she/her)
All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets is like something that like lives in my brain.
01:17:44
Kylan
i I think, honestly, only because like I've been in situations where
01:17:49
Shauna (she/her)
Gosh.
01:17:56
Kylan
I literally was was called in, I planned on having a day off, and I come in, and honestly, I'm not even supposed to be here today, lives in my head. Like, it just, I honestly, like and I know they're like this de this movie is definitely quotable, but that's my go-to. Like, it's just sort of like, I'm not even supposed to be here today, even if I'm supposed to be there. I'm not supposed to be here today, it's just, um I don't know, I i relate to Dante.
01:18:23
Kylan
ah um I really do as a character. I want i want to say ah want to say that I'm Randall. But the truth is, i'm I'm more Dante than Randall.
01:18:33
Kylan
I know that, and it's funny. I have my Randall moments. I'm a Randall moments, but I'm definitely a Dante.
01:18:37
Ryan
one one of my One of my notes is the the writing is a touch forced at times, but the quality is

Critique and Reflections on View Askew Movies

01:18:47
Ryan
so good.
01:18:48
Ryan
Like you I can't tell how much of it is like, you know, just sort of like younger writers versus younger actors.
01:18:49
Kylan
the
01:18:55
Ryan
Like I couldn't completely buy into the girlfriend. um I can't remember the character's name. I was just like, you know, she's acting. Like she looks like she's acting.
01:19:03
Shauna (she/her)
Oh, and she is very one of the weaker parts of the movie in that regard, like where you can tell where I'm like, oh, like she didn't really do anything afterwards.
01:19:09
Ryan
Yeah.
01:19:10
Kylan
Right.
01:19:13
Shauna (she/her)
And that's just her claim to fame is being, you know, the girlfriend in her.
01:19:13
Kylan
right
01:19:16
Ryan
The girlfriend that sucked 37 dicks.
01:19:19
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah, I'm 37.
01:19:19
Ryan
Yeah.
01:19:19
Kylan
Was that, was that Veronica?
01:19:20
Ryan
ah Veronica, which is an alien love.
01:19:21
Shauna (she/her)
Like, yeah. Yeah, Veronica. Yeah.
01:19:25
Kylan
Veronica.
01:19:25
Shauna (she/her)
Oh, and also, yeah. Try not to suck any dick on the way to the parking lot is also one of those that like, yeah.
01:19:28
Kylan
Yes.
01:19:33
Ryan
Okay. So my notes in my, like personal notes in order are the writing is a touch forced. Then shout out to his girlfriend for sucking 37 dicks.
01:19:46
Ryan
They're 22.
01:19:47
Shauna (she/her)
Hello?
01:19:47
Ryan
So I was like like, I was trying to like imagine like, okay, how many dicks have I sucked? Like way more than 37, but like at what point do I think I hit 37?
01:19:58
Ryan
Because they're like, they're in their early twenties.
01:20:00
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah, oh yeah, one of my notes was like, I do not miss my 20s, like the 20 something drama that is this movie of like, oh, like.
01:20:00
Ryan
They're like college.
01:20:01
Kylan
Yeah, yeah.
01:20:04
Ryan
No. Yes. Something drama of people who stayed too close to their hometown is something I'm grateful that I did not have to necessarily experience.
01:20:12
Kylan
Yes, yes.
01:20:14
Shauna (she/her)
yeah
01:20:16
Kylan
Same thing.
01:20:16
Ryan
But the the next the next line after, shout out to his girlfriend for sucking 37 dicks, the next one of try not to suck any dicks on the way to the parking lot. It's just that quote.
01:20:27
Ryan
That's it.
01:20:29
Shauna (she/her)
hey get back here like and then the guy goes like so good it's so good and like
01:20:29
Ryan
Incredible. Yeah.
01:20:31
Kylan
okay
01:20:35
Shauna (she/her)
But okay, so going with that sex-shaminess though, because there is a lot of sex-shaminess to a lot of their conversations in a lot of ways, where between the like, you know, obviously the fact that he got Dante got cheated on all the damn time by this girl that he's pining over, this distance girlfriend who's getting married to the...
01:20:36
Ryan
and
01:21:01
Ryan
the I major.
01:21:02
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah.
01:21:03
Kylan
Yes.
01:21:03
Ryan
Mm hmm.
01:21:03
Shauna (she/her)
And I just like...
01:21:05
Ryan
Is it an Asian design or is he himself Asian? I mean, I know the answer, but when you say it like that, it...
01:21:11
Shauna (she/her)
Okay. I actually just realized now that I have heard it wrong and I thought it was just, you know, as a movie made with just a whole bunch of white people that it was an Asian design major, not an Asian design major.
01:21:25
Ryan
Right.
01:21:28
Ryan
Right.
01:21:31
Ryan
I don't, that's what I'm asking because I heard it as Asian design major.
01:21:32
Shauna (she/her)
I think
01:21:36
Shauna (she/her)
But I'm almost wondering, I'm like, actually, I wonder if it was like if Asian design was the, like he was very in a niche form of architecture and like, like ah almost like, or maybe like a feng shui, like he was ahead of his time.
01:21:52
Shauna (she/her)
Like, I don't know.
01:21:52
Ryan
Maybe.
01:21:54
Kylan
Well, you know what, I think it's maybe it's one of those things that what how does it resonate with you? I mean, because the truth, I think it's one of those that it could be one or the other.
01:21:59
Shauna (she/her)
Hmm.
01:21:59
Ryan
Right.
01:22:03
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah, like the model seems like the kind of asshole who would make an explicit note of like, Oh, no, wait.
01:22:04
Ryan
because hearing the way that...
01:22:13
Ryan
Well, and specifically, like you said, you know, it's a bunch of white folks, like hearing them note that he is Asian, does it does kind of ring true about how people talk about race, especially white folks, like to say he's Asian, like is to point out that he is not white.
01:22:29
Ryan
And like that matters to that group because it is a group of white people, not necessarily neither negative nor positive, but
01:22:35
Shauna (she/her)
Or, I was getting noteworthy, I should, I would, yeah, like, yeah, yeah.
01:22:38
Ryan
Yeah, yeah, like it's it's of note to them that he is Asian. like I don't in any way, shape, or form hear it as like gross, you're dating an Asian guy, or like why are you know like some type of denigration.
01:22:49
Kylan
Right.
01:22:50
Shauna (she/her)
No, no.
01:22:51
Ryan
It's just he's Asian.
01:22:53
Kylan
Right.
01:22:53
Shauna (she/her)
Well, and I think that's a great segue to talking about the homophobia, too, that I think was kind of it was very casually prevalent in this movie as it is throughout the 90s and the 2000s.
01:23:05
Shauna (she/her)
But honestly, like the way in which homophobia was in this movie, I feel made me think of.
01:23:06
Kylan
Right.
01:23:12
Shauna (she/her)
the 2010s, and of shows like Community, where they frequently would have, you know, the character Pierce played by Chevy Chase, where they would have him say something racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.
01:23:25
Shauna (she/her)
as a nod nod wink to make the audience like, you know that it's being written that this is a negative, you know that it's being written with a critical eye, yet it's still being platformed
01:23:34
Kylan
right
01:23:38
Shauna (she/her)
without any actual textual opposition in many ways.
01:23:38
Ryan
Right.
01:23:42
Ryan
Right.
01:23:42
Shauna (she/her)
And I feel like the homophobia of where, like, you see it with Jay, like, where he was, like, he was, like, when he's, like, licking, and then he's, like, whoa, whoa.
01:23:50
Ryan
Yeah.
01:23:50
Shauna (she/her)
Like, and he's, like, dude, you know, and like, I feel like that kind of grappling with sexuality, like, that's very prevalent throughout the whole movie.
01:23:51
Ryan
Yeah.
01:23:57
Shauna (she/her)
And I think you even see it at the end with the porno that Randall rents when he goes to the good video store.
01:24:01
Ryan
Yeah.
01:24:03
Shauna (she/her)
because I again in another quote that always sticks with me with chicks with dicks that put mine to shame and I always like I've I love that you know for some reason that line always stood out stuck out to me and so I was just thinking like gosh okay but like the way in which he was just very like nobody like even when like the girlfriend was kind of trying to shame him he was like okay like he's like
01:24:03
Ryan
yeah
01:24:25
Ryan
He's like, fuck you, oh yeah, I like, you know.
01:24:27
Shauna (she/her)
You know, it was like, what are you going to do? like And like it was like, all right, you're lost if you're not watching it with me.
01:24:29
Ryan
This is what I like.
01:24:33
Shauna (she/her)
like All right.
01:24:33
Ryan
Right. Yeah.
01:24:35
Shauna (she/her)
because but it sort very But that kind of accepting where like, oh, like you know again, like when you say like when they were like you know dropping different slurs and whatnot, but it it still didn't even feel like it was being out of like hater maliciousness as much as just a like, it was almost that it was very aware of of gayness.
01:24:52
Kylan
Yes, yes.
01:24:52
Ryan
Yes.
01:24:52
Shauna (she/her)
And I think that's what makes Kevin Smith interesting is how aware of gayness he is. even when he isn't putting gay people explicitly in characters until Chasing Amy. But there's still, you can see that he has probably gay people in his sphere, that it's not an entirely heteronormative life that he's lived leading.
01:25:02
Kylan
right
01:25:06
Kylan
Right.
01:25:06
Ryan
Yeah.
01:25:12
Shauna (she/her)
And you can see that, like, the kind of care that he puts in talking about it, which is not, which is pretty unique to the time period.
01:25:20
Kylan
Right. I mean, it's it's a very.
01:25:20
Ryan
Yeah.
01:25:23
Kylan
OK, I will put like the like that that the whole thing with Randall, like that's a very. Real. slice of life because I know a lot of a lot of guys that especially growing up like guys that were That that that were straight, you know, or are they they identified as straight but Like they they had no problem Watching those scenes or actively or like, you know They're watching in a movie one that one of these no clip tapes and then that scene comes up. They're completely fine with it and you know, but I
01:25:56
Kylan
And I feel like it's almost one of those things, like you're in the moment, you're in the moment so you don't think anything about it, but if you point it out, and I saw what you were watching yeah was like, oh, no, no, no, no, no.
01:26:06
Ryan
Yeah, yeah.
01:26:11
Ryan
Yeah.
01:26:12
Shauna (she/her)
ah
01:26:13
Shauna (she/her)
i mean i
01:26:13
Ryan
Yeah.
01:26:14
Kylan
i But that's like a very real, that was like a very real thing.
01:26:16
Ryan
yeah
01:26:18
Kylan
And I was not watching that when that happened. I'm like, yeah, okay, yeah, all right. You know?
01:26:24
Ryan
Yeah. Well, it made me feel like kind of along those same lines, like he is still very definitively straight. Like it just so happens that the women that he likes to watch important happen to have dicks.
01:26:32
Kylan
Yes.
01:26:38
Shauna (she/her)
Or at least that one did, or that day.
01:26:38
Kylan
Yes. That one did yes.
01:26:40
Ryan
At least, at least that one did.
01:26:41
Shauna (she/her)
Well, and even, well, and so the other scene that called out to me was when they were talking about how the girlfriend was always cheating on Dante and how like, you know, they ended up like,
01:26:42
Ryan
Exactly.
01:26:53
Shauna (she/her)
leading, you know, had led to two men hooking up together and then they ended up getting married. And so then the quote that Randall says is, you know, you led men to deviant lifestyles.
01:27:04
Shauna (she/her)
But then literally in the next scene, after Randall said that he's naming pornos in front of a small child, literally and that's where like talking about his actual deviant lifestyle in a way that is inappropriate after like being like, oh, these two decided to love each other as two men.
01:27:18
Kylan
yes yes yes
01:27:18
Ryan
Yeah.
01:27:21
Shauna (she/her)
How dare they? But actually, like and they feel like it's that kind of tongue-in-cheekness, that awareness that it's like not it wasn't actually a deviant lifestyle judging when it's showing on text him doing the actual deviant thing in the next scene.
01:27:23
Ryan
Right.
01:27:27
Ryan
Right.
01:27:37
Ryan
well I think it's more specifically like he is not necessarily because when he's reading those he's reading them to a to oh Wait, no, okay. He is he's calling to check for stock.
01:27:47
Shauna (she/her)
He's ordering it, yeah.
01:27:49
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah, but I
01:27:50
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah.
01:27:50
Kylan
Yes.
01:27:51
Ryan
I didn't necessarily think of that for him. I thought about that for the people that come to the store and which again, I i didn't really put together that that was not an adult video store. um But the thing that he that how that just sat with me after you said it is like in this previous scene where, you know, you're calling queer people deviant.
01:28:14
Ryan
there's probably a bunch of people who are like yeah yeah yeah that is super deviant but kind of like we were talking about with secretary it uses the fact that there are so many people who are into weirder shit who are weirder with big air quotes around it like shit that up that you would also consider deviant that are doing
01:28:28
Kylan
Mm hmm.
01:28:34
Ryan
the same thing, but you don't have anything to say about them because it's secret and behind closed doors.
01:28:38
Shauna (she/her)
Mm hmm.
01:28:38
Kylan
yeah' Right, right, right.
01:28:39
Ryan
But because these people are openly living their lives, CC trans people in the art in the other conversation we were having, as a reminder that, hey, you could choose to just be fucking happy and not live a gross repressed life that makes you hate other people and call them deviant when you are behind closed doors watching, you know,
01:28:55
Kylan
Right.
01:29:02
Ryan
Randall gets pegged by Sheila, volumes one through five. Like, my good dude, butt sex is butt sex. Get over it.
01:29:09
Kylan
Well, it doesn't really get good until Volume 6, that's what I hear.
01:29:09
Ryan
Like, it is.
01:29:14
Kylan
That's why I hear, though. So...
01:29:16
Ryan
Right.
01:29:17
Shauna (she/her)
Well, also, as a point of order, those movies were absolutely for Randall.
01:29:17
Ryan
Okay. but
01:29:21
Shauna (she/her)
There's no way he's going through that much extra effort for any customer. He's not making any calls for a customer.
01:29:25
Ryan
oh
01:29:26
Shauna (she/her)
Those are for himself and himself alone, and you can't convince me otherwise.
01:29:30
Ryan
they definitely like it kind of turned turned over as we were talking about it like oh yeah no that was just for him he was going to see if he could get them sent to him because they don't have them in his video store but um one two things that were very funny to me related to the whole movie rental life which is just
01:29:36
Shauna (she/her)
yeah Oh, yeah. that's
01:29:43
Kylan
No.
01:29:55
Ryan
like pour one out for renting movies.
01:29:58
Kylan
I miss it.
01:29:59
Ryan
Like the youths will never know the joy of you could you you you procured the movie and then you went home and watched it and then you had to bring it
01:30:05
Kylan
Mm-hmm.

Nostalgia for Video Stores and Movie Culture

01:30:13
Ryan
back and get something else.
01:30:13
Shauna (she/her)
here Yeah.
01:30:16
Kylan
Yes, yes
01:30:17
Ryan
Now I get overwhelmed with like the row of things that I've decided I want to watch and watch none of them.
01:30:24
Ryan
Like, if I had to go to a store and work my way through the movies I want to watch, it would be a much different story. But now, you don't have you know, you have access to all of them. But anyways, the two things that I thought were that made me chuckle were a woman. Oh, it's when I think it's because they're late to opening the store. ah Randall's late to opening the store. And someone comes up and I don't remember just a character yells I hate when I can't rent a movie and I like for it just took me down for some reason because it's like what a 90s thing to say like I hate when I can't rent a movie like me too sis I hate that too um but go ahead yeah
01:31:05
Kylan
i
01:31:07
Kylan
i I honestly I have to admit there are moments when I i wish I I look I look forward to like Friday nights like a Friday night when if I wasn't going out was going to the video store or Saturday afternoon going to the video store and you know what maybe I was trying to avoid
01:31:18
Ryan
Yes.
01:31:22
Ryan
yeah
01:31:27
Kylan
i was I was trying to avoid renting Beastmaster 2, but you know the new movie wasn't out, and I was like, well, crap.
01:31:30
Ryan
Yes.
01:31:35
Kylan
I guess it's gonna be you, Beastmaster 2.
01:31:35
Ryan
I'm watching Beastmaster 2 again.
01:31:39
Kylan
I didn't want that, you know or or the return to Dolomite. I don't know, but it's...
01:31:43
Ryan
Right, right.
01:31:45
Kylan
um actually no no Actually, right now, down in ah down here in Akron, there's a art installation that replicates
01:31:45
Ryan
One of the Please go ahead, sorry.
01:31:56
Kylan
a video store of and it's filled with horror movies so you should guys if you ever come down here you can come down to check it out so Yeah, it's it's an art installation.
01:32:04
Ryan
Where is it? The Art Museum? There's an Akron Art Museum?
01:32:08
Kylan
I don't think it's a museum. um I've been looking been trying to find where it is But yeah, it's down here in Akron somewhere But yeah, it's like it has all the old movie posters.
01:32:19
Kylan
I think there's even a ah a concession desk There yeah, yeah
01:32:20
Ryan
Yeah.
01:32:23
Ryan
Yeah. One of the things that I miss about a specific time, because it it only was for so long at Blockbuster, I don't know, was you could rent whole video game systems.
01:32:35
Ryan
Like you could rent a PlayStation.
01:32:35
Kylan
Yes.
01:32:36
Ryan
You could rent a Nintendo 64. My specific memory is renting a PlayStation and the Space Jam video game.
01:32:48
Kylan
wound
01:32:48
Ryan
that was basically just, you know, 2K, but with but Space Jam characters. um But I always wanted to work in a video store. i I'm pretty sure I applied to Blockbuster when I was like 16, but didn't get it.
01:33:02
Ryan
Like, I don't remember if I did. Either way, I always wanted to work in a video store. It always seemed like so much fun in all of the movies where people worked in video stores.
01:33:11
Kylan
Yes.
01:33:15
Kylan
That's true. i never That's a job I never had. I did get to be a clerk. I was a clerk in a for a drug store. um And so that that was fun.
01:33:22
Ryan
Oh.
01:33:25
Kylan
And i that that was one another reason why like at that show, kind of the the movie resonated with me was that clerking experience. like it it's yeah that in it Yeah, waiting.
01:33:35
Ryan
Yeah. It's like waiting.
01:33:38
Kylan
yeah oh Oh, God.
01:33:40
Ryan
Yeah.
01:33:40
Kylan
Yeah. That is quite the line.
01:33:41
Ryan
It's like if you worked in a restaurant, that movie hits a lot differently.
01:33:45
Kylan
It does, oh my god.
01:33:46
Ryan
Really does.
01:33:48
Kylan
Ugh. Yeah, except that what whatever I think he did with the, where he, you know.
01:33:49
Ryan
um
01:33:52
Ryan
Yeah, yeah, the bat wing or something. Yeah.
01:33:56
Kylan
Yeah!
01:33:57
Ryan
Yeah. But also not that, fuck you know, it didn't involve anyone's testicles, but I'll never forget when I worked at a restaurant, um one of the chefs, um he like joke, he was joking that he was like going to take a bite out of an onion, like just a raw onion.
01:33:58
Shauna (she/her)
on.
01:34:15
Ryan
With its peels around it and i was like oh gro that's disgusting he's like no it's not and then you just fucking bit into this raw onion and shoot it and eat it.

Quirky Stories from Restaurant Work

01:34:26
Ryan
That's the type of shit that happens in the back of restaurants like no it was it was i mean i'm sure someone's testicles are out at some restaurant right now but like.
01:34:36
Ryan
You know, when I was working at a restaurant, thankfully that never happened. It was just this weird dude that I went to high school with who graduated two years before me and started working at this restaurant and bit an onion. It was very strange.
01:34:49
Kylan
Oh god.
01:34:49
Shauna (she/her)
I then had a friend who would always take his testicles out after that movie and would then be like, Oh my God, like I sat in gum.
01:34:53
Ryan
Of course.
01:34:58
Shauna (she/her)
Like it would just love, loved doing that.
01:34:59
Ryan
Yup. Yeah. um that yeah
01:35:03
Shauna (she/her)
The, but again, isn it's so funny. The, like all the ways in which my like friend group of my twenties was so very, like it was so
01:35:14
Ryan
Get it? Yeah.
01:35:17
Shauna (she/her)
so gay but so straight in its gayness that it was like and me who had like no way to know how like like I felt like I could never participate then because of my like and so that I just always felt weirdly in the middle of it all but like not ever actually a part of it nor able to like oh I don't miss it I don't miss my 20s my main note was I don't miss my 20s and just what another great reminder
01:35:19
Ryan
Yeah. yeah
01:35:34
Ryan
Yeah.
01:35:39
Ryan
It's fate in any way. Yeah, same.
01:35:41
Kylan
No, no, I didn't.
01:35:41
Ryan
Well, yeah. yeah When there there is there's really nothing gayer than like teenage boys.
01:35:54
Kylan
That's true.
01:35:54
Ryan
And I'm including through like 19 to 20, like boys in their teens are so fucking gay.
01:36:02
Kylan
Mm-hmm.
01:36:02
Ryan
Like everything is so gay. You're constantly like touching each other for whatever reason. You know, sleepovers are weird and gay.
01:36:12
Shauna (she/her)
Well, I think they're actually a little gayer.
01:36:12
Kylan
Yes. ah
01:36:13
Ryan
and Like, it's just... um I really hope that the young people are still just as gay. ah But I'm probably more so.
01:36:22
Kylan
I think I'm a little gay or I think they are.
01:36:23
Shauna (she/her)
Not gonna lie.
01:36:23
Ryan
That's true.
01:36:25
Shauna (she/her)
Just like, they don't need to have that much subtext.
01:36:25
Kylan
so
01:36:25
Ryan
Yeah, which work?
01:36:27
Shauna (she/her)
It just gets to be text for them. Like, I saw the Mean Girls musical movie, and I was like, oh, I love how gay it is.
01:36:30
Ryan
Yeah.
01:36:33
Ryan
Yeah.
01:36:35
Shauna (she/her)
Like, it it's so very gay in a way that
01:36:35
Ryan
Yep.
01:36:38
Ryan
Damien's super gay, but also still just like regular person, not trophy gay.
01:36:43
Shauna (she/her)
Right, like, well even then I still think he was a little tropey but at least a different, at least a different, more realistic trope than a, like, fiction, you like it felt like a more, like, based on a true story than it did, like, the idea, a straight person's idea of a gay person.
01:36:44
Kylan
Right.
01:36:47
Ryan
Sure. Yeah. Yeah.
01:37:00
Ryan
So just one, I guess maybe one more note, because again, it's a short movie that is really just a series of interactions between characters, very day in the life, um but it's a great introduction into a lot of these characters that we get to know.
01:37:13
Ryan
Does, does does Gil, for some reason I remember something about Dante and someone being gay in Mallrats, someone having like a gay realization in Mallrats, is, am I remembering that correctly?
01:37:24
Shauna (she/her)
No, no, no. The gay realization is that Banky Edwards, the character who is in Chasing Amy, he ends up getting with Hooper Axe,
01:37:25
Kylan
Yeah.

Representation in View Askew and Marvel Anticipation

01:37:36
Kylan
Yes.
01:37:37
Shauna (she/her)
who is the one comic book writer who is like, okay, all right.
01:37:41
Ryan
ah nothing Yeah, it'll come back to me at some point.
01:37:42
Shauna (she/her)
Either way, that is the character. They are Chasing Amy characters, or the ones who ended up coming out as gay, is what it is, in J and Silent Bob.
01:37:44
Kylan
Yeah.
01:37:47
Ryan
Got it.
01:37:47
Kylan
Right. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. Yeah. Mm hmm.
01:37:49
Ryan
Got it.
01:37:50
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah.
01:37:51
Ryan
So any closing thoughts, things that really stuck out to you about um ah clerks in general?
01:38:02
Kylan
I need to go back and rewatch this movie. Honestly, it's been a long time, but it's one of those movies, and I love movies that are slices of life.
01:38:14
Ryan
yeah
01:38:15
Kylan
Because, I mean, there's no factors stranger than fiction, and sometimes every now and then, looking at fiction feels like you're looking in the mirror.
01:38:26
Kylan
you know so I, you know, no, I'm in my fifties now and I, I don't know. I feel like it'd be kind of fun to go back and look at that and feel that energy that I felt in my twenties, you know?
01:38:40
Kylan
I mean, I, I, I, yeah.
01:38:40
Shauna (she/her)
Well, I think that is the beauty of these movies.
01:38:40
Ryan
yeah
01:38:42
Shauna (she/her)
like that like finding the beauty Finding the weird and the interesting and the mundane is so... and like you know Just a day at the a day at the mall, a day at the convenience store, a day with a lesbian, normal life.
01:38:53
Kylan
Yes.
01:38:53
Ryan
exactly yeah yeah all of some of my favorite days um so One of the the the the end-all-be-all question that we always ask, you know, we are hot nerds, nerds are hot. Who is the hottest character in Clerks? And if there's no one that really like sticks out to you or like works for the answer, since you're our our first View-esque universe guest, you can pick anyone in the View-esque universe if you'd like.
01:39:27
Kylan
okay um Okay, so i did I did some research on this one because I wanted to make sure I was getting my answer right now. I was remembering i was remembering my movies.
01:39:39
Kylan
my my movies right yeah Here's the thing. I was a about to say Veronica if we if we're if we were sticking specifically with clerks.
01:39:45
Ryan
sure
01:39:50
Ryan
it yes and It can be a yes and.
01:40:03
Ryan
In Jane's sound box straight back, Shauna knows because Kevin is a Kevin Smith's wife.
01:40:05
Kylan
ah face on bob Yeah, yeah.
01:40:07
Shauna (she/her)
Isn't this wife?
01:40:09
Kylan
Huh?
01:40:09
Shauna (she/her)
Isn't the leader?
01:40:11
Kylan
Yeah.
01:40:11
Shauna (she/her)
I think it's Yevonsmith's wife, Jennifer Schwalbach.
01:40:14
Kylan
Yes, yeah, her. yes yes yeah yeah i mean actually i caught myself kind of mudra under my breath i'm the click commander i'm the commander of all clits today and i'm like no that's the wrong movie that's the wrong movie but you know all right and i'm not the click commander you know so yes it is
01:40:33
Ryan
You know, the clit is its own commander if you if you know if you know what you're doing. Shauna, who's your hottest character in Quirks?
01:40:38
Shauna (she/her)
Okay.
01:40:42
Ryan
Because we'll talk about the music universe in general.
01:40:44
Shauna (she/her)
OK, my hottest Clerks characters. I think I got to go top three. I think I go Caitlyn Brie, the girlfriend.
01:40:50
Ryan
Sure, OK.
01:40:53
Ryan
Good girlfriend.
01:40:54
Shauna (she/her)
I think, you know what, that look with like the white bun down churn like, you know what, I can see as she got it.
01:40:58
Ryan
Yeah, very 90s cute.
01:41:01
Shauna (she/her)
I can see why Doncic had a hard time getting over her. Like, even though he had a girl who was bringing her him lasagna, which, you know, is pretty rare.
01:41:09
Ryan
Hello?
01:41:10
Shauna (she/her)
You know, which, you know, again, the Kevin Smithism at the end of there, like, you know, there are a lot of fine looking women in the world, but not all of them are going to bring you lasagna for lunch.
01:41:10
Ryan
Yes, me and you lasagna piece of shit.
01:41:18
Ryan
Yup.
01:41:18
Shauna (she/her)
And I was like, that's such a true, like, like what a life lesson that I think a lot of nineties boys needed to hear and did.
01:41:18
Kylan
No.
01:41:19
Ryan
Yeah. yeah
01:41:27
Shauna (she/her)
So thank you for that. But I'm going to go Caitlin. Second, I have to go with Berserker because I would like some making fuck. And so I think that definitely I got to go with that guy.
01:41:39
Shauna (she/her)
And third, the old man with the erection who died because clearly he could get it.
01:41:39
Ryan
Yeah.
01:41:42
Shauna (she/her)
And like, you know what, he did a good job there.
01:41:43
Ryan
Yeah.
01:41:45
Shauna (she/her)
You know, how do you get it? She fucking wrote that for that long, like.
01:41:50
Ryan
was better, which also helps that it was better than any sex you ever had with Dante, which is
01:41:54
Shauna (she/her)
Yeah, you know, well, I mean, I guess there's no dick like rigor mortis dick.
01:41:55
Ryan
Not saying a lot.
01:41:59
Ryan
I guess.
01:41:59
Shauna (she/her)
No, actually, never mind.
01:42:00
Ryan
Nothing's saying harder, for sure.
01:42:01
Kylan
Yeah, it sounds like it sounds like he was a stand-up guy ah yeah Oh Yeah
01:42:01
Shauna (she/her)
Just kidding.
01:42:02
Ryan
Yeah, yeah don't cancel Shauna for fucking dead people.
01:42:02
Shauna (she/her)
Forgot I said that. Yeah, rewind.
01:42:09
Ryan
Yeah, there it is.
01:42:10
Shauna (she/her)
them I think she was sitting down.
01:42:13
Ryan
he is I think even more laying down, maybe? I don't know.
01:42:17
Shauna (she/her)
Because I'm a toy boy!
01:42:17
Ryan
It was very confusing.
01:42:17
Shauna (she/her)
Because Donde gave him the porno mag. Because that's what you do.
01:42:21
Ryan
Yeah, of course.
01:42:23
Shauna (she/her)
And like, what a weird...
01:42:24
Ryan
Yeah.
01:42:25
Shauna (she/her)
You don't want that, yeah.
01:42:26
Kylan
Yeah.
01:42:26
Ryan
So I think mine, um there's a little soft spot for Randall. I think you know the the toxic guy, I was just like, whatever.
01:42:34
Shauna (she/her)
will
01:42:36
Ryan
he He talks really fast and says funny shit. So I'm like kind of attracted to him. And then Silent Bob forever. I've always thought Kevin Smith was kind of cute. um But i the number one person that I actually, I took the note but didn't even think about it.
01:42:46
Shauna (she/her)
Whoa.
01:42:53
Ryan
um the ladder The guy that's on the ladder when they're playing hockey on the roof um and tells him he sucks at passing is super hot. He's my number one. ah He had any other nice butt when he like was like trying to get into the store and then like decides to climb up this ladder or whatever. I was absolutely like, oh, he's got a cute little butt. So nameless guy that owns Dante in hockey You're my number one for clerks.
01:43:24
Ryan
So as we wrap up, anything you are excited about in the nerd universe right now, Kylan, anything that you are encouraging folks to check out, we gotta get our tickets.
01:43:35

01:43:44

01:43:45
Ryan

01:43:46
Kylan

01:43:46
Shauna (she/her)
We have to get our Marvel Rivals character.
01:43:48
Ryan
Yeah.
01:43:52
Kylan
Like right right now, I play Snap and I'm like, I can only do one Marvel game at a time. I tried to do two and i so I have to pick one ah which one I'm gonna obsess over and I'm looking forward to Daredevil and I think that's going to be a March oh Reacher season two at the end of this month and the got third and final I think it's the third and final section of season six of Cobra Kai so but yeah so yeah that that's all the stuff I kind of have countdowns going for so yeah
01:44:03
Ryan
Yes. Yes.
01:44:25
Ryan
Oh, work.
01:44:25
Shauna (she/her)
Okay. Let's see. ah
01:44:31
Shauna (she/her)

01:44:31
Ryan

01:44:34
Shauna (she/her)

Kylan

01:44:38
Ryan

01:44:51
Ryan
And there was a few that I was like, oh my God, what? for Oh, the one that stuck out to me because, you know, ah they're making a happy Gilmore too, which is kind of wild.

Kylan

Kylan
Yeah, I moved over i moved over to Blue Sky, and i that's where all all my stuff is there.
01:46:52
Ryan
um
01:46:57
Kylan
But some nerdy stuff there, mainly I talk about books and watches there, so I'm i'm a big watch person, so.
01:47:03
Shauna (she/her)
Mm.
01:47:06
Ryan
Cool. Like wristwatches?
01:47:08
Kylan
Yeah, yeah. um Yeah, like I do, I'm into, I got into watches almost a year ago. So yeah, wrist watches, I have a couple of pocket watches, but mainly wrist watches not bounced between like Chinese watches and, um and like Chinese and Japanese watches.
01:47:26
Kylan
And um my, my, my collection is growing now. So, but yeah, so you get to see all my collections.
